MANAGER’S NOTES

Good fternoon and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Supplementary Cup game against Premier Division Reading City. Unfortunately, we go into today's game after back-to-back league defeats. We host Reading City today who also find themselves in a bit of bad form, so we will both be up for the occasion looking for a win today. After today we are without a game until February. So the lads can put in 100% knowing they've got a bit of a rest! Thank you for you continued support. Andy Davies Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

We look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

Thornbury Town V Reading City

READING CITY CLUB HISTORY Reading City Football Club’s formation came as part of Highmoor AFC’s 50 year celebration in 2018.

This decision was not taken lightly however the community of Reading has yearned for a semi-professional club behind Reading FC to represent Reading and give local players the opportunity to play for a Reading based team as Reading.

Club secretary, Chris Gallimore took over the role in 1990 and recruited the now Chairman, Martin Law, to become first team manager in 1992 and between them they assembled a strong squad of players and success was to follow.

The pathway for the club begins with the Sunday morning development centre for 4-6 year olds through to Under 16’s, with us having representation at every year group amounting to some 26 teams.

The cub thrived, with regular promotions, league and cup doubles, being the first club to win the current Thames Valley Premier League unbeaten. The Reserves are still the only reserve side to win the same Reading Step 7 League.

This pathway will over the coming years become the life blood of the club. The highly qualified FA coaches will deliver the clubs philosophy and structure meaning every player at any age group will play the Reading City FC way. The future is bright and we hope to give the community of Reading a great opportunity.

After winning the league promotion to the Uhlsport Hellenic League in 2012 meant moving and playing at Palmer Park, the current location was secured in 2016 and in 2018 after 50 years it was decided to change the name to Reading City.

DID YOU KNOW... Reading City play at Scours Lane, formerly the home ground of Reading Town. You can see the ground from the train when departing Reading heading towards Bristol. The ground is also adjacent to the Reading Festival site and is home to festival-goers and their tents each summer. 10

EASINGTON SPORTS 1 CONVEY Saturday 5th JANUARY 2019 Hellenic League Division One West

they pushed forward at every opportunity but a well organised Sports defence were able to deal with any threat. 10 minutes into the half Lancastle set Harry Brock free, but his run towards the penalty area was brought to an unceremonious end. Luke Franklin’s subsequent free-kick, whilst on target, did not seriously trouble White.

Saturday’s match at the Mundys provided an entertaining game for a large crowd between two well matched, ball playing teams. It was perhaps unfortunate that it was a harsh looking penalty call that separated them at the end of the 90 minutes.

Whilst there was action in both penalty areas neither side could create the match winning opening although midway through the half Marcus Wormwell’s run and cross found Harry Brock whose looping effort from just inside the area beat White but cannoned back off the crossbar.

Top of the table Easington, making the long journey from Banbury, were quick out of the blocks and gave Thorns no time to settle and it was the visitors that dominated the early exchanges. Their main threat was down the left where Joe Guest, making a welcome return after 3 months out with injury, found Eyre to be a bit of a handful. It was from crosses by the wide man that Sports best chances came but on two occasions Convey and Spaull couldn’t get on the end of his cross.

With both sides looking for the win, the game opened up and Kurtis Parkin was called into action to produce two great saves from Rose and Coombes. Then, with just 8 minutes remaining an Easington cross from the left saw Nathan Sage stumbling alongside a Sports striker and the ball struck his arm as he tried to keep his balance. The referee interpreted it as a deliberate handball and Callum Convey stepped up to fire the spot kick past Parkin to give Easington the win and a vital three points.

Eventually Thorns began to take a foothold in the game and on 25 minutes Luke Franklin’s pass found Harry Brock darting into the penalty area but Sabin’s well-timed challenge averted the danger. Just 5 minutes later Town created the best chance of the game when Franklin and Mark Viner linked up to play Craig Lancastle through but with just Sports keeper White to beat, Town’s leading scorer dragged his shot narrowly wide of the post. The second half saw Town start brightly as 20

Fullerton sending James Lewis the wrong way from the spot. Thornbury Town didn’t give up and Asher Budd and Jim Brock provided some extra energy from the bench to push for a consolation goal. However, they had to rely on set pieces for the best of their chances. First, a Pete Fowler header from a corner going narrowly over the bar. Not soon after, Luke Franklin came close with a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Both sides struggled to get to grips with the sticky uneven surface at Clanfield, a contrast to the flat artificial pitch at Cirencester a week earlier. It took 10 minutes for the first chance of the game when James Lewis, standing in at goalkeeper for Kurtis Parkin, pulled of a fine save when a Clanfield striker beat the offside trap.

Clanfield put the game well and truly to bed, when Fullerton tried to lob James Lewis from the edge of the area. The ball fell short of the line, however the covering defender was unable to clear before Nathan Kimber arrived to score Clanfield’s fifth.

Minutes later Clanfield’s Jordi Mulvany rounded Nathan Sage and forced a corner. The resulting corner sparked shouts that the ball crossed to line, but the assistant referee deemed it not a goal after a last ditch block from Thornbury. Thornbury’s first chance came 20 minutes in to the game when Marcus Wormwell cut in from the left and had a low shot towards the bottom right corner, only to be tipped wide by Clanfield goalkeeper Jamie Zoldan. With the last moments of play in the first half, another Clanfield counter attack ended with winning a corner after Tom Webb made sure that Clanfield didn’t find themselves through on goal. The corner however posed problems again for Thornbury with James Lewis putting into his own net. After the half time break, Clanfield came out an even stronger side and just 3 minutes after the restart doubled their lead. Nathan Kimber squared the ball across goal to Jozef Fullerton who had beaten his marker for an easy tap in from 10 yards out. Clanfield then added a third when Josh Gibbens got on the end of a corner at the back post with James Lewis unable to reach the ball. Just on the hour mark, Nathan Sage conceded a penalty for a challenge on Connor Tinsley, with 21

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE LATEST MATCH REPORT 5th January 2019 Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West Tytherington Rocks 0 Cheltenham Saracens 10 (away view)

of the match, but we gave away a cheap free kick for pushing in the box. A determined Saracens side kept applying pressure, even when a series of shots were blocked. The back row of Smith, Barnard and Oliver did a great job of picking up any lost shots and feeding the ball straight back into the box. The hard work paid off and when the ball finally found it’s way to Harlie Price, he tapped it in behind the goalkeeper, cool as a cucumber, to score his second of the match.

Tytherington have been struggling so far this season, so we were heading there expecting a comfortable win, but knowing how important our goal difference could be towards the end of the season. Saracens dominated the match, we started attacking from the off and kept the tempo up for the entirety of the 90 minutes. Ian Sercombe started us off in the third minute when he broke through on goal, but his shot curved just slightly wide. The sixth minute saw our first goal. Liam Brignull made a great pass through to Kai Mahon, who held on to the ball well despite a flurry of Tytherington tackles, before passing it to Harlie Price who fired the ball right into the top corner of the net.

In all fairness, Tytherington’s goalkeeper made some great saves, especially at close range, but his efforts proved futile when Mahon ran with the ball at pace, before passing it into Sercombe in the box. We thought it was a miss when the ball hit the inside of the post, but then hit a Tyherington defender and crossed the line for our 6th goal of the game. The last minute of the half saw our keeper Charlee Cook challenged for the first time, but he handled it well and saved the shot easily. We headed into the changing rooms at halftime with a 6-0 lead, with a race on to see who could score the first hat trick of the match.

Tytherington, who perhaps had grown used to conceding early goals this season, kept their character and tried to put an attack together, but the ball was easily lost back to us. The next ten minutes saw a wave of shots on goal from Saracens, with efforts from Loveridge, Barnard and Goodhall, but it was the combination of Adam Loveridge and Ian Sercombe that got us our second goal of the match. Loveridge crossed to Sercombe, who passed it back to Loveridge who scored from close range. 16 minutes gone and we were already 2-0 up.

Even with such an impressive lead, Saracens came out of the dressing room fighting, determined to score more. James Bowers, who’d been impressive in the first half, crossed the ball into the box. Unluckily for Tytherington, it struck Harry Hamlin before crossing the line for our 7th goal. The 55th minute saw Tytherington with a renewed vigour, playing a much more attacking style of football than they had previously. Jon Barlow had a shot, but Cook made a great fingertip save.

Just 4 minutes later, Ian Sercombe finally scored a well deserved goal, after having a beauty ruled out for offside less than a minute previously. Tytherington tried to surge forward again, but they just gave away possession too easily, losing the ball from their own free kick. They kept trying, however, and the 29th minute saw a great run from Bailey Croome, but our very own Mike Oliver was on hand to stop him in his tracks and feed the ball back in to Adam Loveridge, who was unmarked in the box and scored his second goal of the match.

Their burst of energy seemed short lived though. The addition of our substitute Gareth Jones put us right back on the attacking foot, and he had a shot narrowly cleared off the line. The 60th minute mark saw Harlie Price score arguably Sarras best goal of the season so far, when he struck it on the volley and weighed it perfectly up and over the Tytherington keeper to seal his hat trick.

The 31st minute saw us awarded our first corner

26

He went on to score again in the 66th minute, but it was ruled offside. 3 minutes later and Loveridge had a goal ruled offside too, with shouts of protestation from the Saracens dug out. It didn’t matter, though. Loveridge took a shot from distance in the 72nd minute that fired just wide, but he followed it up moments later with a great shot that crossed the line and secured his well deserved hat trick.

5 January 2019

Ascot United are the Premier Division team of the month for December 2018, winning for the second time this season, along with Thornbury Town the team of the month for the combined Division's One East & West.

Our final goal of the match came from an 88th minute penalty, duly taken by Adam Loveridge, who sent the keeper the wrong way and fired the ball into the top left corner of the net. The final score, our best of the season so far, was 10-0. We always expected a comfortable win, but Tytherington certainly didn’t roll over for us. Their keeper kept out several great shots, and they really had a go in the second half. We saw them play last season (an 11-0 loss) and they’ve definitely improved since then. A great result for Sarcens and we’re looking forward to our first home game of the new year, and hopefully continuing the winning way.

The points awarded are compiled from Hellenic League fixtures and Hellenic League Cup games only. Voting is then made independently by members of Uhlsport Hellenic League committee.
