Good evening and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for this evening's Hellenic League derby game against Tytherington Rocks. It's good to get back to the bread and butter of league action, having only played one league game so far in 2019. This will be the fourth time we've played Rocks this season and I'll be looking for another confident performance to make it 4 wins out of four. Thank you for you continued support. Thornbury Town V Tytherington Rocks

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

TYTHERINGTON ROCKS FC CLUB HISTORY Tytherington Football Club was formed in 1896 by the local Headmaster, Mr Emanuel, and others including the Rev John Bingley. Rev. Bingley stipulated that, to gain his support, the club should play in amber and black – his old college colours – Brasenose in Oxford.

and toilet block together with electricity! The Reserves reformed in Division 7 and the first team reached Division 1 for the 1987-88 season. In 1987-88 saw the formation of the third team joining Division 7 and at the same time Streamside Juniors were adopted as Tytherington Rocks Juniors. A floodlit training pitch was opened in 1988. Rocks entered Premier Division 2 and by 1993 arrived in Premier Division 1. Ground improvements continued with team dugouts and perimeter fencing. As Champions of the Bristol and Suburban Premier League in 1996-97, it was shock and disappointment when their Gloucestershire County League application was rejected. Undaunted, attention then turned to the clubhouse. A new bar, separate changing facilities, referee accommodation for both sexes and a spectator stand, all raised the profile of the club and, in 1997-98, this time the County League application was successful.

The club played in the Wotton-Under-Edge League and travelled to away matches by waggonette, a four-wheeled horse drawn cart, with seats along both sides. The club played at many different grounds in the early days, including Mill-Leaze Fields behind the village shop. They eventually found a permanent home at the Hardwicke Playing Fields. The club used the Swan Inn as their changing rooms until a new pavilion was erected by the Parish Council, on the playing fields in 1938. In the 1920s Tytherington FC was suspended by the Gloucestershire Football Association for non payment of a fine. The fine followed a referee being jostled into an adjoining brook after what the home side felt were some dubious decisions! No pay – no play, so Tytherington disbanded until 1932 when Tytherington Rocks FC was formed, joining the Bristol Suburban League. War disrupted the local leagues and Rocks rejoined Division 1 in 1947. The same year a youth team called the Pebbles was formed and played in the Gloucestershire Junior Boys’ League.

The team survived a difficult first season but, during the next four years, enjoyed top half finishes and were GFA Challenge Trophy Finalists, League Cup Finalists and, in 200304, were County League Runners-up. Hellenic League football and Hellenic League status Division 1 [West] arrived in 2004-05. Season 2011-12 was to prove to be the first of three outstanding years for Tytherington Rocks. The 1st team finished 18 points clear to win the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West] title, followed by a 3rd place and then champions again in 2013-14, this time by 5 points. However, once again, in 2014, as in

The team spent most of the 1960s between Division 3 and Division 5. The facilities were upgraded in 1979-80, with new showers 10

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc previous years, a transfer request to move to the Toolstation Western League was rejected by the FA.

GEMS

This refusal had a devastating effect on the club with players and team management of both 1st team and Reserves leaving en masse. History will record that several managers and committee members worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the club during the following four seasons. The Reserves lasted for only the first of those seasons before folding. One positive feature has been the participation of the 1st team in the Buildbase FA Vase competition.

OF THORNBURY 3 HIGH STREET THORNBURY 01454 281341

August 2018 saw the prospect of a 1st team still in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West], a Reserve team hoping to re-enter the Bristol Suburban League at a realistic level and an U18 squad playing under floodlights in the Somerset Floodlit League.

MATCH REPORT THORNBURY TOWN 0 MALMESBURY VICTORIA PACKER

1

Tuesday 5th February 2019 Bluefin Sports (UHL) Subsidiary Cup

break, but Toby bennett’s header was ruled out for offside.

In monsoon conditions at the Mundy Fields, where even staying on your feet became an art, Thornbury and Malmesbury provided an entertaining game for the hardy souls in the crowd, in the first “knockout” stage of the Subsidiary Cup.

The second half started with the visitors almost grabbing their second but Benjamin saved well from Tranter. Play swung from end to end and Packer had a great chance 10 minutes in when he ran clear but Benjamin pulled off a great save and recovered quickly to save the rebound. Midway through the half a slip in the Thorns defence saw Tranter go one-on-one with Benjamin but the keeper pulled off another good save.

Town attacked from the kick off and Joe Guest’s effort from the edge of the penalty area curled just wide whilst Harry Brock’s great run and cut back came to nothing. However it was Victoria who took the lead in their first attack after 11 minutes. Krystian Hext’s cross from the left was met with a header from Jamie Packer that eluded Thorn’s stand-in keeper Brandon Benjamin. The goal seemed to boost the visitors and Tranter’s shot saw Benjamin make a comfortable save.

At the other end Harry Brock set up Craig Lancastle but his effort went narrowly wide of the post and then Marcus Wormwell’s shot was tipped round the post for a corner by Brown. The visitors had a great chance to double their lead 15 minutes from time when Packer set up King but again Benjamin came to Thorns rescue with a good save.

Thorns rallied and a surging Toby Bennett run into the penalty area after 20 minutes was ended when he was brought down but Craig Lancastle’s resultant spot kick was saved by keeper Brown. The keeper saved again from Lancastle 5 minutes later after great build-up play between Brock and Matt Davis, and Brock then curled a shot just too high.

Chances came and went at both ends with Brown saving from Harry Brock and Marcus Wormwell while in the very last seconds Witt ran clear after Nathan Sage slipped in the mud but again the visitors were denied by Benjamin. Thorns were disappointed to go out of the cup but not with their performance.

Malmesbury enjoyed some periods of pressure but Town’s defence were never seriously troubled and the home side thought they had equalised 5 minutes before the 20

MENTAL HEALTH My name is Matt Lansdown, known to many as Lanny, and known to many others by many other names! I’ve been involved with Thornbury Town for many years, as a player, as a reserve team manager and now as the coach of 2 of the youth teams. I’m a very loud person who always wants to be heard and be centre of attention, and that’s why I feel it’s important for people to hear my story! The last 2 years of my life have been engulfed in a battle with my mental health, a subject that we (particularly men!) don’t like talking about. I knew something wasn’t quite right because where I normally wanted to be heard, I now wanted to hide away and be ignored. Where I’d want to be the key decision maker, I now didn’t want any responsibility. Where I always had clarity in what I was doing or trying to achieve, I now had utter confusion in my mind and couldn’t focus on the simplest of tasks. My life had been turned upside down and nobody knew it! I didn’t want anybody to know it! How could I tell anybody? I couldn’t tell my family, I was their dependable rock! I couldn’t tell work, they wouldn’t trust me with any responsibility ever again! I couldn’t tell the football club as there were too many people looking to me to hold things together! And so on and so on. I kept it to myself and it built into a huge issue, culminating in huge tears, vast amounts of medication and hours of counselling to combat an issue with anxiety and depression. My mind always goes back to the first time I knew something wasn’t right. Could this whole issue have been prevented if I spoke to somebody then and there? The answer for me simply is yes! I want to raise awareness of mental health issues, I want to eliminate the stigma attached to mental health issues, and I want people to be able to talk about it openly and

honestly, when they are struggling. There are ways to go about this in a normal manner, but I was determined to shock people into changing their thoughts on the subject and therefore entered Ironman UK and I am writing a weekly blog (lannysironmancharitychallenge.simplesite. co.uk/) on my mental health journey and how it is affected by my training. The blog gives an open an honest account of my struggles (and the good times) so that people can see the real story that people are dealing with on a day to day basis. Please, please, please spare some time to read the blog and help break the stigma. SUPPLIES Please also share with friends andGAP family so that it reaches as many people as possible.

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE HELLENIC MATCH REPORTS 9th February 2019 Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 West Easington 1 Clanfield 3 (Home View)

in virtually the last kick of the half but Jamie Zolden was quickly off his line to smother at Spaull’s feet. 0-2 at half time.

Sports suffered only their second defeat in the Hellenic Division 1 West against Clanfield 85, however it was the manner of the defeat which was the most disappointing aspect of the game. Apart from two spells at the beginning of each half, the visitors were comfortably the better side deserving all three points by the end of the match. A converted penalty scored by Callum Convey on the hour mark was not enough to overturn the deficit leaving Sports with much work to do in order to over haul Cheltenham Saracens in the coming weeks.

Easington started the second half eager to score the first goal and pressed the opposition more than in the first half. Craig Robinson dropped back into midfield whilst Henry Rose went upfront and the switch seemed to work and meant Sports won the ball higher up the pitch putting pressure on the Clanfield defence. Zolden was again quick off his line to punch clear a neat cut back from Mike Spaull whilst he then claimed at the feet of Rose moments later. The visitor’s keeper did not time his next tackle so cleanly and Easington were awarded a penalty after substitute George Coombes was then brought down in the box by the keeper. Convey converted the penalty to make it 1-2.

Sports certainly started brightly and used the width of the pitch well in the opening 10 minutes. Mike Spaull and Joe Eyre both flashed crosses across the penalty box but Craig Robinson was unable to make any connection. The visitors defended the edge of their box well and settled into the game and after a flurry of half chances they took the lead on 14 minutes. Josef Fullerton managed to wriggle free down the left hand side and then chipped an excellent delivery to the back post. The cross wrong footed the defence and as they adjusted, the ball was headed back across the goal for Callum Miller to stab in on the line. Easington tried to respond but for large spells they were left chasing the game. The Clanfield midfield controlled the tempo and were more accurate with their passing which left Sports stretched across the pitch.

Easington pressed for an equaliser and it was Convey again who went closest. After the referee played on following a challenge on Henry Rose, Convey was the first to the ball and he smashed a half volley that clipped the outside of the upright from the edge of the box. Unfortunately for Easington, the break through never came and Clanfield slightly against the run of play scored the decisive next goal. Clanfield had already seen a deflected shot bounce back off the post but on 74 minutes before they finally got the ball over the line after a chance from a free kick on the edge of the box. Manager Ben Milner made further changes bringing on Michael Zinn and Josh Rose but Sports just lacked quality in the final third which meant that Clanfield were able to comfortably see out time to take all three points. A further muscle injury to Callum Convey capped the misery for Easington who now face Banbury United in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup on Tuesday before heading to

Clanfield eventually extended their lead with 5 minutes to go until half time. There had been few chances at either end but unfortunately a lapse in concentration at the back lead to Josef Fullerton with a one on one chance and he tucked the ball calmly under Joe White to make it 0-2. Mike Spaull was played through 26

to make Clanfield were able to see out the remainder of the game and claim three valuable points.

Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division Virginia Water 1 Bishops Cleeve 1

Having lost eight and drawn one of the last nine league matches against Easington, Clanfield broke the sequence with an excellent 3-1 win in which every player showed commendable commitment in difficult conditions. The last time Clanfield had beaten Easington in a league game was in 2013/14 when Steve Olphert and Adam Little were the goal scorers and Current Easington chairman Richard Meadows was in goal. Clanfield made one change to the starting line-up from Tuesday's win at Newent with Adam Pendell coming in for Michael Duerden who was on the bench.

An entertaining match in front of a good crowd at Stag Meadow, with honours deservedly even on the day. Two years ago three leagues separated the teams, and it was a stern test for VW who are now winless in 5 league games. The home team started the stronger with the wind in their favour. Liam Whyte, Jake Baker, Ruben Bande all had good chances and went close. Waters went ahead on 24 minutes after Jamie Reid was pushed in the box, and converted the penalty. At the other end, the defence were excellent, in particular Mark Lansdowne, with Matt in goal only having to deal with long shots. Try as we did to add to our single goal, it was not to be, and we held a slender 1-0 lead at the break.

Easington started the game brightly and came close early on, but Clanfield then had a couple of half chances and took the lead in the 14th minute with Callum Miller scoring from close range after a cross from Josef Fullerton was headed into his path. Clanfield were working hard as a unit and were closing down the home side well and looked dangerous when they attacked. Five minutes before half time Fullerton was clean through and made no mistake. However before the interval Jamie Zoldan in the Clanfield goal had to be alert to deny Mike Spaull.

In the second half the visitors were the better, and pressed hard, with their ambition of promotion at the forefront of their thoughts. The pressure told in the 75th minute when their striker got in between our CBs and miscued his shot under the advancing Matt in goal. Cleeve then had a good penalty shout declined, but to be fair to VW, we did have a number of chances to seal the game at 1-0 and even snatch all three points. Mark saw one header drift wide, and another cleared off the line, Adam McNamara forced their keeper into an error, but his shot was cleared off the line by a last ditch block by their CB.

Easington started the second half brightly with Joe Eyre having a shot blocked and Craig Robinson having a shot blocked, and the Clanfield defence was making some good interceptions and were playing with a lot of energy further up the field. However with almost an hour left to play Zoldan bought down substitute George Coombes and Callum Convey converted the resulting penalty. Convey came desperately close to scoring an equaliser when his effort hit the post.

Then with a draw looking likely Max Samyint hit a pin point pass, that Jamie took in his stride, only to see his shot go over the bar from close range. A great match for all who witnessed it, and we wish the Cleeve squad and their Management every success as they push for the title.

Clanfield however got the all important third goal through Adam Pendell following a free kick just outside the area having thought they had scored earlier in the half, with the referee judging that the ball had not crossed the line. Easington made further substitutions, but although Zoldan had some routine saves 27
