Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

EDITOR'S NOTES Welcome everyone to today's game against Shortwood United. Since losing our opening league game to Malvern, we've bounced back with 6 wins that sees us occupy 2nd spot in the table. Today's match against league newcomers Shortwood will be one of our trickier fixtures this season. Shortwood moved to the Hellenic League after finishing bottom of the Western League Premier Division and I'm sure they'll be aiming for a high finish this season.

Next Sunday we have one of the biggest fixtures ever to grace the Mundy Playing Field turf when Cribbs FC visit in the 2nd Round of the Buildbase FA Vase. A lot of effort has gone on behind the scenes to move the fixture to the Sunday in order to play the game at the Mundys due to the fireworks on Saturday, so please come along and pack out the ground and give the lads as much home advantage as possible! Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

4

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

SHORTWOOD UNITED CLUB HISTORY

Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at four different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank. The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League. Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed. The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET).

8

Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final. 2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history! The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position. The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears. The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions. 2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish. 2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood – and

the club moved forward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18. In 2017 -18 The club had an excellent run in the FA Trophy and produced some excellent results in the league interspersed with some heavy defeats but this was only to be expected with a very young side – but throughout the year they strived to play football the Shortwood way. After Christmas Shortwood faced a difficult dilemma. The ever increasing demands of the FA around ground gradings and the loss of their major sponsor left the club with no choice but to resign from the Southern League and they applied to the FA to be placed in the Toolstation Western League and they were successful in that application. Des Meredith did not feel that he could carry on with a complete rebuild of the side

and departed and the club moved on with Jason Scrivens and Joey Tustain taking the helm. They did a tremendous job getting a squad together in next to no time in almost impossible circumstances. Shortwood finished bottom of the Toolstation Premier in 2018-19 and we were relegated and moved to the Hellenic Div 1 West, but the future is more optimistic than for a very long time. Shortwood’s two youth sides enjoyed an incredibly successful season and with the reintroduction of a Development side for season 2019 / 20 the club is rebuilding and giving young local players a complete chance to progress. Mat Blythe has been added as joint manager with Jason Scrivens, and Simon Blythe was added as 1st team Coach. With Chris Hicks and Shane Mathews taking the reins of the Development side the club is on an even keel and all connected to the club can look forward to the season.

Saturday 5th October - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West

THORNBURY TOWN 8 H.BROCK (2), FRANKLIN, LANCASTLE (2), WEBB (2), WORMWELL

NEW COLLEGE SWINDON 1 HISCOCKS Bottom of the table New College were the visitors to the Mundys on Saturday and from the very first minute there was only going to be one winner. Despite missing four key players Thorns made a quick start and in their very first attack good build up play set up Harry Brock whose shot from 10 yards out gave McGill in the College goal no chance. The enthusiastic but limited College side frequently gave the ball away and it was no surprise when Luke Franklin doubled the lead 9 minutes in with a shot from the edge of the box into the corner of the net. However the visitors pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later when Joe Hiscocks powerful shot slammed against the inside of the post and cannoned past Dan Taylor, making his debut in the Thorns goal. New College enjoyed their best spell after this but never seriously troubled the Town defence and midway through the half Craig Lancastle made it 3-1 when he picked up the ball from a Marcus Wormwell cross, skipped past his marker and steered the ball past McGill. It was 4-1 after 28 minutes when sustained Thorns pressure saw the ball fall to Harry Brock who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. Town wasted a couple of other good chances and McGill pulled off a good double save to deny Brock and Lancastle.

24

Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

The second half was a repeat of the first with the visitors under pressure and Tom Webb scored twice in a minute 5 minutes after the restart, his first a close range finish at the far post and his second a lob over the stranded McGill into the far corner of the net. The young visitors never gave up and Hiscocks came close to netting their second goal in the 63rd minute but his shot rebounded off the post whilst a couple of minutes later Taylor pulled off a good save to deny the striker. However GAP SUPPLIES further goals from Marcus Wormwell and Craig Lancastle emphasised Thorns dominance and but for some wayward shooting Town could easily have recorded double figures against the gallant but outclassed visitors.

Saturday 12th October - Buildbase FA Vase 1st Round

DOWNTON 0 THORNBURY TOWN 4 WEBB, H. BROCK, LANCASTLE, FRANKLIN Another road trip in the FA Vase for Thornbury – this time to Wiltshire after the morning inspections deemed the pitch fit for play. With one enforced change - captain Toby Bennett missing out due to concussion sustained the week before - Thornbury were confident of victory despite being the bookies underdogs. Downton claimed the first of their corners in the first minute only to be cleared by the first of many Brandon Benjamin headed clearances. The 3rd minute saw good work from Harry Brock down the left and Tom Webb continued his run into the box where he finished from close range. The next half an hour saw Downton have most of the possession albeit mainly in their own half although the Thornbury defence, with Guest and Sage outstanding at the heart of it, had to work hard to contain the Downton numbers 8, 9 and 10. Just after the half hour mark a Rhys Hodgson shot was well saved with a couple of shots at the other end saved by Kurtis Parkin. On 39 minutes a long ball was not dealt with by Downton and Brock was able to lob the advancing keeper and Thornbury had doubled their lead with a goal out of nothing.

Downton finished the half with a couple of tame efforts and at the break it remained 2-0 to the visitors. Thornbury, as they have recently, started the second half slowly but on 51 minutes the ball found its way to top scorer Craig Lancastle and he made no mistake, shooting low into the bottom corner for a 3-nil lead. Downton were never going to go down without a fight though and on the hour, Parkin was forced to make three saves in quick succession. Benjamin had a couple of efforts saved with ten minutes remaining, but Thornbury guaranteed their progress with a last-minute Luke Franklin goal from the edge of the box. So, the final whistle and 4-0 to the visitors, leaving the home supporters wondering how it had happened – Downton having edged the possession, shot and corner stats. But it’s the goals stat that matters, and Thornbury were in the draw for the second round made at FA HQ on Monday lunchtime. The outcome, a home tie with Cribbs FC from the Western League Premier Division to be played over the weekend of 2/3rd November. Man of the Match – Joe Guest (Thornbury Town) a great captains performance at the heart of a well-earned team clean sheet.

Saturday 19th October - Bluefin Sports (UHL) Supplementary Cup

NEWENT TOWN 1 (4) WOODWARD

THORNBURY TOWN 1 (2) LANCASTLE Another week, another cup – this time the Hellenic League Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup which Thornbury had won the season before. With an eye on the top of the table clash at Malmesbury Victoria on Tuesday evening it was a much-changed side that took the field for Thornbury with only five remaining from the FA Vase win the previous week. The first ten minutes saw a cagey affair with just the one effort from each side but the next ten saw a Newent goal disallowed for offside and a Lancastle effort cleared off the line before the end of the half saw both sides wayward shots clearing the clubhouse and netting respectively. Harry Brock replaced the injured Marcus Wormwell (gluteus maximus) at the start of the second period and three minutes in Thornbury had the ball in the net but Lancastle was adjudged offside. A couple of minutes later a Newent forward somehow managed to miss an open goal and the next half an hour saw both sides looking as if they didn’t want to decide the tie in the 90 minutes. On 80 minutes however a run from Joe Guest saw him brought down in the penalty area and Lancastle went straight down the middle to take the lead. It lasted less than three minutes though as Newent made it 1-1 on 83 mins.

26

Thornbury Town v Shortwood United

In stoppage time a Franklin free-kick found Dave Jones whose shot hit the post with the whistle coming soon after. So, into extra time… A strong start from Thornbury saw a long ball find Lancastle who finished well to re-take the lead. Nathan Sage replaced the injured Farthing and it looked like the plan was to defend the lead slightly deeper with tired legs all round. However, at the half time break with Thornbury leading 2-1, and taking everyone by surprise, it was brought to the referee’s attention that the game should have gone straight to penalties! After lengthy discussions and confirmation that the league had been contacted, the referee selected the end for the spot kicks and despite their obvious frustration Thornbury had little option… In front of very noisy home fans the shootout saw Newent run out 4-2 winners with the home ‘keeper saving two attempts to take them into the next round.
