MANAGER’S NOTES

Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields today. I’ve hoped you’ve all had a well deserved rest from football over the summer (not including that little tournament over in Russia!) It’s seems like so long ago that we were here at the Mundys watching us lift the County League trophy. Over that time the Mundys looks very different and fit for this higher level. I’d like to thank Richard, Toni and the rest of the committee for all the hard work they’ve put in over the past months, and years, to get us to this historic match. I’m very hopeful that we can carry on our form from the County League and hopefully impress and possibly surprise some this season. Finally, thank you to Milbury’s of Thornbury for sponsoring today’s game Andy Davies, Manager 5

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

CHELTENHAM SARACENS CLUB HISTORY Formed in 1964 as part of a multi-sport club, they joined the Cheltenham League Division 5. Gradually the football section grew in strength and was soon running two sides in the Cheltenham League, two in the Stroud & District, two Sunday teams and several youth teams.

In 2015/2016 the club narrowly missed out on winning the Division 1 title but secured promotion to the Premier Division by finishing second, however the club decided to remain in Division 1. The club has now a strong base to move forward with three senior teams on Saturdays and junior teams aged between 6-14.

In 1986 the club were elected to the Hellenic League and stayed in Division 1 until they were promoted to the Premier Division in 1999/2000 with the second team also winning the Reserve Section that same year. After two years in the Premier the team were relegated back to Division 1 in 2001/2002.

MY LOVE OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL BY TONY INCENZO, TALKSPORT RADIO WORLD RECORD One of the best groundhops was being part of a world record in March 2004. I joined 250 other groundhoppers to watch five matches at five different football grounds in one day in the Central Midlands League.

IN THE BEGINNING I’ve been watching Non-League football on a regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, club officials and supporters are there for the love of the game. The true spirit of football exists at Non-League level.

This is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and we received certificates confirming the world record at the end of the fifth game.

I grew up in North-West London and I was taken by my family to see my local club QPR as a child in the 1970’s.

INSIDE PRISON! In December 2011, I set about watching a match inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex.

I’ve always supported the R’s as my Football League team, but when they were playing away from home I started going to see my local Non-League clubs – Hendon primarily, but also Finchley, Barnet and Edgware Town.

This featured a team called Phoenix FC, who had to play all their fixtures at home (for obvious reasons!) as inmates of the Young Offender Institution at Feltham.

GROUNDHOPPER From there, I decided to visit every NonLeague club in London as my groundhopping bug began. By the time I was 17, I had visited all 92 Football League grounds and I visited all the Scottish League grounds whilst still a teenager.

I received special permission by email to attend a fixture, but I was told not to bring a phone or a camera with me. I was instructed to arrive in the main car park along with the match referee and the visiting players from Hanworth Villa Vets.

Since then, I’ve continued travelling all around the country to visit Non-League clubs. In August 2015, I chalked up my 2,000th ground at FC United of Manchester. Then in July this year, I went to my 5,000th football match attended where I saw Hertford Town play a pre-season friendly at Richard Hale School 3G pitch.

We were met by members of the prison staff who escorted us all in together…via an airport-style metal detector, a body search, numerous locked gates and along a path to the changing rooms. This process took 45 minutes. After the players and ref got changed, we were then accompanied through more locked gates out to the playing area.

22

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc A high mesh fence with barbed wire on top surrounded the football pitch. There were dug-outs along one touchline and I watched the match from there as the only spectator.

THE FUTURE I have now been to 2,237 football grounds and have completed visits to the all the grounds in the top 16 divisions of English football down to Non-League Step 4. Then at Step 5 I need 15 grounds and another 60 at Step 6. There are endless possibilities at Step 7 and below, where I’ve already visited many grounds. Also, I’ve been to 35 European countries plus the USA for football – so it would be nice to visit more countries.
