PLAYOFF SEEDING After clinching a berth in the postseason on Wednesday, Thorns FC are locked into a tight battle for seeding in the NWSL Playoffs. Tied on points with Western New York and Sky Blue FC, Thorns FC are currently seeded third after tiebreakers are applied (with Western New York second and Sky Blue FC fourth). Saturday’s match, along with Sky Blue FC’s game against Chicago, are critical in terms of clinching a home playoff game. The top two seeds host semifinal matches on Aug. 24, while the highest seeded team to reach the final will host the championship on Aug. 31.
INJURY UPDATE Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan sustained a mild MCL sprain in her left knee in the opening minutes of Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at the Boston Breakers. The forward, who leads Thorns FC with 21 points (8g, 5a), is expected to miss between 2-4 weeks.
Saturday’s match marks the second, and final, regular-season game between Portland Thorns FC and the Western New York Flash. The match is vitally important for both clubs in terms of seeding for the playoffs, as the winner will have the inside track on the No. 2 seed and the right to host a semifinal match. Entering the game, Western New York is seeded second, holding the tiebreaker over Thorns FC on overall goal differential (the team’s drew 1-1 in their only match). Thorns FC square off against the Flash after suffering a second straight loss, 2-1 against the Boston Breakers on Wednesday at Dilboy Stadium. Forward Tiffany Weimer scored the opening goal for Portland, but Thorns FC conceded two goals in the final 22 minutes. Western New York is unbeaten in five straight games, dating back to a 1-1 draw against Portland on July 14. The Flash earned a 1-0 home win over Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday with Carli Lloyd scoring in the 54th minute.
LAST MATCH VS. WESTERN NEW YORK Midfielder Meleana Shim scored her second goal of the season and goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made five saves, including an 84th-minute stop on a penalty kick, as Portland Thorns FC earned a 1-1 draw against the Western New York Flash before a spirited crowd of 13,021 at JELD-WEN Field on July 14. After making three saves in the opening 30 minutes of a back-and-forth match, LeBlanc got a hand on an off-balance shot from Western New York forward Abby Wambach in the 37th minute, but was unable to make the save as the Flash took a 1-0 lead. Just more than 90 seconds later, Thorns FC found the equalizer off Shim’s left foot in the 38th minute. Western New York earned a chance for the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute when forward Veronica Perez was fouled in the penalty box by Thorns FC midfielder Allie Long. Wambach, who increased her season total to 10 goals earlier in the game, stepped up moments later for the penalty kick. Diving to her left side, LeBlanc saved the shot off the right post and the rebound attempt went wide.

HEAD COACH CINDY PARLOW CONE A U.S. Women’s National Team veteran and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Cindy Parlow Cone leads Portland Thorns FC into their inaugural National Women’s Soccer League season in 2013. She was appointed the first head coach in the club’s history on Dec. 19, 2012. One of the all-time leading goal scorers in U.S. Women’s National Team history, Cone’s playing career included a nine-year stint with the national team, a championship in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympic Games. She is the youngest player ever to win both an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup title. Due to post-concussion syndrome, she retired from the national team in 2004 with 75 goals and 35 assists in 158 appearances. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Cone, 35, spent the last six years as the assistant coach for her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2007-12. She helped guide the team to national championship-winning seasons in 2008, 2009 and 2012. In addition to coaching at UNC, Cindy also served as the director of coaching for senior girls programs (U-15 to U-18) at Triangle United Soccer Association in Chapel Hill, N.C., and has been a member of the U.S. U-14 and U-15 Girls National Team coaching staffs since 2010. She holds a USSF “A” License and was the only female coach to participate in the FIFA Futuro III course. Cone, a forward, began her international career with the U.S. Women’s National Team in 1996, scoring twice in her debut and contributing to an 8-1 win over Russia on Jan.14, 1996. She was named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 and was a starting forward on the highly recognized United States squad for the 1999 Women’s World Cup, scoring two goals in the tournament. The 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team was named Sports Illustrated’s 1999 Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Cone helped the U.S. Women’s National Team to a third-place finish in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, playing in the semifinal match against Germany held at JELD-WEN Field (then PGE Park), and a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She, along with the other members of the 1996 Olympic team, was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. Cone played in Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) for three seasons with the Atlanta Beat from 2001-03, leading the team to the postseason each season. At North Carolina, Cone recorded 68 goals and 53 assists during her collegiate career from 1995-98, and is one of 10 players in the program’s history to record 40 or more goals and assists in a career. She was a four-time All-American, won the Hermann Trophy in 1997 and 1998 as the nation’s top player, was an four-time Academic All-American, and led the Tar Heels to back-to-back national titles in 1996 and 1997.
ATTENDANCE IN CONTEXT Through 11 home games, Portland has earned an average attendance number of 13,320 at JELDWEN Field. The number is impressive when put in larger context. When placed alongside Major League Soccer attendance numbers, Thorns FC draw larger average crowds than Chivas USA (8,715) and just slightly less than three other MLS clubs: D.C. United (13,577), New England (13,544) and Chicago (13,775). Worldwide based on 2012-13 attendance, Thorns FC have earned higher average attendance than seven men’s teams in the Dutch Eredivisie (Netherlands), five teams in Ligue 1 (France), three teams in Serie A (Italy) and England’s npower Championship (the step below the Premier League) and two teams in La Liga (Spain).

The Western New York Flash have conceded 13 goals in 11 road games (1.18 road goals-against average), while league-leader FC Kansas City has yielded 14 goals in 10 road games (1.40 road goals-against average).
