MATCH DAY PREVIEW Sunday’s match, presented by Providence Health & Services, marks the regular-season home finale for Portland Thorns FC. Facing first-place FC Kansas City in a nationally televised game on FOX Soccer, Portland has the opportunity to leapfrog their opponents into the No. 1 spot in the National Women’s Soccer League with a win. Sunday’s game marks the fourth meeting this season between Thorns FC and FC Kansas City. The season series, which is tied 1-1-1 between the sides, has seen a little bit of everything, beginning with the first-ever game in NWSL history on April 13 as Thorns FC fought back for a 1-1 draw on the road against the Blues. The two sides traded blows on June 6 at JELD-WEN Field as Portland emerged with a 4-3 win despite a brace from FC Kansas City’s Lauren Holiday. Most recently, FC Kansas City earned a 2-0 win over Thorns FC on June 30 at Verizon Wireless Field in Overland Park, Kan.
FOX Soccer Unbeaten in four straight games, Portland took the outright claim to second place on Wednesday following a 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC.
PLAYOFF PICTURE Entering the weekend, Thorns FC can clinch a spot in the NWSL playoffs with a win on Sunday or a draw combined with a Boston loss or draw against Western New York. Thorns FC can also clinch with a Chicago loss or draw against Seattle on Saturday coupled with a Boston loss or draw against Western New York.
SCORING STREAK Rookie midfielder Meleana Shim became the first Thorns FC player to record a goal in three consecutive matches this season with her goal against Chicago on July 28. Shim, who has scored four goals this year, tallied the game-tying goal against the Western New York Flash on July 14 and the game-winning goal on July 21 against Boston. LAST MATCH VS. FC KANSAS CITY Midfielder Lauren Holiday tallied a strike from distance in the 10th minute and second-half substitute Merritt Mathias added a goal in the 71st minute as FC Kansas City defeated Thorns FC 2-0 before 4,774 fans at Verizon Wireless Field at Shawnee Mission District Stadium on June 30. The match marked Portland’s first road loss of the 2013 season. The home side jumped out to an early lead when defender Leigh Ann Robinson picked out Holiday with a pass from the defensive third in the 10th minute. Holiday collected the ball near the halfway line and dribbled 25 yards down the middle of the field before unleashing a right-footed shot that deflected off a defender and caught LeBlanc out of position. Defender Merritt Mathias added a second goal for FC Kansas City in the 71st minute when a pass from Robinson was mishit into the penalty box by Thorns FC midfielder Angie Kerr. The ball looped over the Portland defense and Mathias was able to flick it into the goal past LeBlanc, who was rushing off her line to stop the threat.

HEAD COACH CINDY PARLOW CONE A U.S. Women’s National Team veteran and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Cindy Parlow Cone leads Portland Thorns FC into their inaugural National Women’s Soccer League season in 2013. She was appointed the first head coach in the club’s history on Dec. 19, 2012. One of the all-time leading goal scorers in U.S. Women’s National Team history, Cone’s playing career included a nine-year stint with the national team, a championship in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympic Games. She is the youngest player ever to win both an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup title. Due to post-concussion syndrome, she retired from the national team in 2004 with 75 goals and 35 assists in 158 appearances. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Cone, 35, spent the last six years as the assistant coach for her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2007-12. She helped guide the team to national championship-winning seasons in 2008, 2009 and 2012. In addition to coaching at UNC, Cindy also served as the director of coaching for senior girls programs (U-15 to U-18) at Triangle United Soccer Association in Chapel Hill, N.C., and has been a member of the U.S. U-14 and U-15 Girls National Team coaching staffs since 2010. She holds a USSF “A” License and was the only female coach to participate in the FIFA Futuro III course. Cone, a forward, began her international career with the U.S. Women’s National Team in 1996, scoring twice in her debut and contributing to an 8-1 win over Russia on Jan.14, 1996. She was named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 and was a starting forward on the highly recognized United States squad for the 1999 Women’s World Cup, scoring two goals in the tournament. The 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team was named Sports Illustrated’s 1999 Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Cone helped the U.S. Women’s National Team to a third-place finish in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, playing in the semifinal match against Germany held at JELD-WEN Field (then PGE Park), and a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She, along with the other members of the 1996 Olympic team, was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. Cone played in Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) for three seasons with the Atlanta Beat from 2001-03, leading the team to the postseason each season. At North Carolina, Cone recorded 68 goals and 53 assists during her collegiate career from 1995-98, and is one of 10 players in the program’s history to record 40 or more goals and assists in a career. She was a four-time All-American, won the Hermann Trophy in 1997 and 1998 as the nation’s top player, was an four-time Academic All-American, and led the Tar Heels to back-to-back national titles in 1996 and 1997.
