2017 SEASON IN REVIEW Portland finished the 2017 regular season with a mark of 14-5-5, earning a playoff berth for the fourth time in five seasons. Thorns FC won their second NWSL Championship in five seasons (2013, 2017). Additionally, Portland established club single-season records for points (47), wins (14), home wins (10) and shutouts (11). As a team, Portland had the top defense in the NWSL for a second consecutive season, allowing the fewest goals (20) with the best goal differential (+17) and finished tied for the lowest goals-against average (0.83) in league history. Individually, goalkeeper Adrianna Franch set an NWSL single-season record for shutouts (11) and was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year and NWSL Best XI. Defenders Meghan Klingenberg and Emily Menges were named to the NWSL Second XI along with midfielder Lindsey Horan. To conclude the 2017 season, Portland finished the campaign posting a mark of 11-1-1 in their last 13 games, including the playoffs. Thorns FC wrapped up the campaign on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) in regular-season play and were unbeaten in their last eight games (7-0-1), including playoff matches.

MATCH PREVIEW Saturday’s match marks the first of the 2018 season for Thorns FC. Portland travels to square off against reigning NWSL Shield winners the North Carolina Courage on Saturday in Cary, N.C., in the first of back-to-back road matches to begin the season. It marks the first time since 2014 that Thorns FC have opened the season on the road. Portland and North Carolina have combined to win 2 NWSL Shields and a NWSL Championship over the past two seasons, posting a combined record of 30-12-6 during the 2017 season as the top two teams in the league. Defensively, Thorns FC and the Courage had the best defensive marks in the NWSL in 2017. With Portland conceding the fewest goals (20) and posting a +17 goal differential, while North Carolina registered a league-best 12 clean sheets and conceded just 22 goals during the regular season.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first five NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 17,653 fans in their fifth season in the league in 2017. On Sept. 30, 2017, Thorns FC recorded their fourth sellout in club history.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS Head coach Mark Parsons enters his third season with Thorns FC in 2018. Since joining the club for the 2016 season, Parsons has helped Portland to an NWSL Championship (2017) and NWSL Shield (2016), helping Thorns FC become the first NWSL team with three trophies, while compiling a mark of 26-8-10 (.705) and 12 or more wins in each of his first two seasons with the club. During his tenure, Thorns FC have finished in the top two in the NWSL regularseason standings in both seasons, winning the club’s first NWSL Shield in 2016, and second NWSL Championship, while helping Portland secure a home playoff match in consecutive seasons. Under Parsons, Thorns FC have secured one of the top home-field advantages in the league, registering just two losses at Providence Park since his arrival (18-2-2) and became the first team in league history in 2017 to record 10 home victories in a season with the second-best home record in league history (10-1-1). In just his second season with the club, Parsons helped Portland lift the NWSL Championship trophy behind one of the most dominant defensive performances in league history. Thorns FC tied the singleseason record for the top defense in NWSL history, posting a 0.83 goals-against average, while also equaling the mark for the most home shutouts (7) in a single season. In addition, Thorns FC finished the 2017 regular-season campaign ranked first in fewest goals conceded (20), fewest goals conceded at home (8) and fewest goals conceded on the road (12). The 2016 NWSL Coach of the Year in his first season with Thorns FC, Parsons led Portland to the NWSL Shield. With Parsons at the helm, Thorns FC finished the season with a 12-3-5 record as they hosted the club’s first-ever home playoff game. In addition, Portland registered the best home record (8-1-1) and best road record (4-2-4) in the league, while beginning the season with the second-longest unbeaten streak in league history (12 games). Parsons oversaw a defensive unit that became just the third team in league history to allow less than a goal per game over the course of an entire season (19 goals in 20 games, 0.95 goals-against average) and offensively the team ranked second in the league in goals (35) and tied for second in assists (23).

North Carolina won the 2017 NWSL Shield with the best record in the league (16-7-1). The Courage were bolstered by a strong home record, posting a mark of 9-3-1. As a team, North Carolina ranked fourth in the league with 38 goals scored in 2017. Forward Lynn Williams returns for the Courage, the team’s leading goal scorer from 2017 with nine goals along with forward Jessica McDonald who tallied four goals and two assists. One key addition for North Carolina is 2015 NWSL MVP Crystal Dunn who arrived via an offseason trade. Dunn helped guide the Washington Spirit to the NWSL Championship match in 2016 and scored 15 goals during her MVP season.

AGAINST THE COURAGE Saturday’s match marks the third regular-season meeting between the two sides, and the fourth across all-competitions. Portland is 1-1-0 in regular-season matches against North Carolina. Both teams won their respective home matches in 2017. The Courage earned a 1-0 win with a late goal on April 22, while Portland secured a 1-0 victory on July 15 at Providence Park. In addition, Thorns FC registered a 1-0 win in the NWSL Championship match behind the game-winning goal from midfielder Lindsey Horan.

CLUB ADDS HUBLY Portland has signed defender Kelli Hubly as a national team replacement, while forward Hayley Raso is unavailable as a result of being named to the Australia Women’s National Team roster for the upcoming Asian Cup.

Prior to joining Thorns FC, Parsons served as the head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, helping guide the Spirit to consecutive playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season.

Portland opens the season on the road for the first time since 2014. In five seasons, Thorns FC have posted a mark of 4-0-1 in season-opening matches. In 2014, Portland traveled to Houston to begin the season, earning a 1-0 win, while playing to a 1-1 draw against FC Kansas City in team’s first-ever NWSL match in 2013.
