Seattle Reign FC came away with a late goal in a 1-0 win back on May 10, 2014, while Portland secured a NWSL Playoff berth on the final day of the regular season on Aug. 17, 2014 in front of 17,109 fans at Providence Park.

HOT IN JULY Thorns FC have posted a record of 5-3-6 all-time during the month of July, including a record of 4-1-3 at Providence Park. In eight homes matches, Portland has scored 24 goals, tallying multiple goals in six of those matches. In addition, Thorns FC set a NWSL single-game record for goals in a match, recording a 7-1 win against FC Kansas City on July 13, 2014 at Providence Park and followed that up with a 6-3 win over the Boston Breakers on July 20, 2014. Individually, midfielder Allie Long has been highly productive in July, recording six goals in 13 career matches. In addition, forward Christine Sinclair has six goals and two assists in 12 matches during the month of July since 2013, while defender Steph Catley has registered all four of her assists for the club in July.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC has led the league in attendance at better than 13,000 fans per match since the team’s inagural season in 2013. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world and are averaging 14,079 fans at games in 2015. Thorns FC set a NWSL single-game record for attendance on Aug. 3, 2014, drawing 19,123 in a 1-0 against the Houston Dash.

HEAD COACH PAUL RILEY Paul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after taking over as the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels. In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Women’s National Team midfielder and former Women’s Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and Germany Women’s National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Riley’s first season. Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season. Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs. A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth development clubs in the Northeast. Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002. At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997). As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98). A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

MILESTONES Several players are approaching 50 career NWSL games played: midfielder/defender Kendall Johnson (48), midfielder Mana Shim (47) and midfielder Sinead Farrelly (44). Additionally, forward Christine Sinclair (45), along with Shim, could also become one of a handful of players this year to reach 50 career NWSL games played for Thorns FC, joining midfielder Allie Long. Midfielder Kendall Johnson is approaching 4,000 career minutes played as she currently sits at 3,990 minutes, while Sinclair has played 3,880 minutes. Defender Emily Menges will surpass 3,000 career minutes if she players at least 39 minutes on Wednesday. Defender Rachel Van Hollebeke could make her 40th career appearance for Thorns FC on Wednesday. Long remains tied for first-place in career assists for the club with nine, tied with Thorns FC Alex Morgan. She can claim sole possession of first place on the list, while also becoming the first player to record double-digit goals and assists if she registers an assist on Wednesday. In addition, Sinclair (16) sits one goal behind Long (17) in the all-time career scoring list.

THORNS AT THE WORLD CUP Eight of Thorns FC nine players appeared in matches at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while Tobin Heath and Alex Morgan helped the U.S. lift the trophy with a 5-2 win over Japan in the final. Heath became the fourth Thorns FC player to score at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup as she tallied the 5th goal in the win for the U.S. Portland is the only team in the NWSL with two players on its roster who have scored a goal in a World Cup Final. In addition, Thorns FC had more players score in the World Cup then any NWSL team (4) as Jodie Taylor scored for England, Christine Sinclair tallied two goals for Canada and Morgan scored in the quarterfinal round against Colombia. Nadine Angerer logged 690 minutes, the most of any NWSL player at the World Cup. The Germany international played in all seven of her country’s games at the tournament, including two matches that went to extra time. Thorns FC players combined played 2,854 minutes in the tournament, the most of any NWSL team. In addition, a total of 11 current Thorns FC players have played in a World Cup as both Rachel Van Hollebeke and Ayo appeared in the 2011 version of the tournament.

AGAINST SEATTLE Portland leads the all-time series with a record of 5-2-0, owning a 3-1-0 record at Providence Park. Thorns FC closed out the 2014 regular-season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over their Cascadia-rival to secure a spot in the NWSL Playoffs on the final day of the 2014 season. Midfielder Allie Long registered the gamewinning assist on forward Alex Morgan’s game-winning goal in the second half of the match. In a tightly contested series, Portland has registered eight goals; three of which have come from forward Christine Sinclair.
