MATCH DAY PREVIEW Playing their third game in eight days, Portland Thorns FC square off against the Western New York Flash on Wednesday, July 29, at Sahlen’s Stadium; kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (Pacific). Portland and Western New York meet for the second time this season, while Wednesday’s meeting in the first of two between the teams at Sahlen’s Stadium. Thorns FC closes out the regular season on the road against the Flash on Sept. 4. With just seven games remaining on the regular season schedule, Thorns FC are just five points out of the fourth, and final playoff spot. Portland plays two of its next three games at home and two of its final three games on the road. With a win on Wednesday, Thorns FC (13pts) would leap frog the Flash (15pts) in the NWSL table and move within two points of FC Kansas City (18pts) in fourth place.

MAKING HISTORY Despite a 1-0 loss in a tightly-contested match on July 22, Thorns FC made club and NWSL history with a new league attendance record of 21,144 fans. The previous record of 19,123 was set on Aug. 3, 2014, against the Houston Dash. It marked the first sellout in team history and ranks as the secondlargest, stand-alone crowd for a women’s professional soccer match in the United States. The record was set in the inagural match of the first women’s professional league, the WUSA, in 2001 between the Washington Freedom and Bay Area CyberRays. Wednesday also marked the fifth time Portland has seen a crowd of better than 16,000 at Providence Park since 2013.
