Thorns FC is coming off a loss to the Western New York Flash on June 7. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was issued a straight red card in the 28th minute forcing Portland to play down a player for the remaining 62 minutes. Five Thorns FC players made their season debuts including forward Alex Morgan, defenders Rachel Van Hollebeke and Steph Catley, midfielder Verónica Boquete and goalkeeper Michelle Betos. Portland enters Sunday’s match with a record of 2-0-0 in all competitions against the Washington Spirit. Thorns FC outscored Washington 4-1 in their two meetings in 2013.
LAST TIME VERSUS THE SPIRIT Thorns FC earned a 2-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on May 19, 2013 at Providence Park. Forwards Christine Sinclair and Alex Morgan both registered goals in the win. Sinclair put Portland in front just four minutes before halftime, settling a cross in the box from midfielder Allie Long before bending a left-footed shot inside the far post. Morgan doubled the lead in the 86th minute running onto a through ball, splitting two defenders and finishing with a right-footed shot inside the box. Washington goalkeeper Chantel Jones made a game-high six saves in her NWSL debut against Portland.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC drew an average crowd of 13,320 fans per game during the inaugural 2013 National Women’s Soccer League season. Through five home games in 2014, Thorns FC has averaged 13,298 fans at Providence Park. Portland’s tallied an NWSL record 17,619 fans at the team’s 2013 regular-season, home finale against FC Kansas City on Aug. 4, 2013.
