LAST TIME AT WASHINGTON Last season, Thorns FC earned a 2-1 victory at Maryland SoccerPlex on May 4, 2013, in the team’s fourth game of the inaugural NWSL season and its only road game against the Washington Spirit in 2013. Forward Alex Morgan scored the first goal of the match from the penalty spot in 12th minute. Saturday’s match marks the first of two meetings on the road against the Spirit in 2014. The two teams will meet for the final time during the regular season on July 23.
MATCH PREVIEW Portland Thorns FC will play the first of two matches on the road this season against the Washington Spirt on Saturday, June 21 at Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland SoccerPlex; kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Pacific). Thorns FC played host to the Spirit on Sunday at Providence Park earning a 2-0 victory behind goals from forward Jessica McDonald and midfielder Verónica Boquete. Goalkeeper Michelle Betos made her first start for Portland, registering a clean sheet and her first NWSL win in a Thorns uniform. Portland enters Saturday’s match with a record of 3-0-0 all-time against the Spirit. Thorns FC have outscored Washington, 6-1, in those three meetings, scoring two goals in each of the previous matches. Portland has a record of 10-3-5 all-time on the road in all competitions, dating back to the 2013 season.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC drew an average crowd of 13,320 fans per game during the inaugural 2013 National Women’s Soccer League season. Through six home games in 2014, Thorns FC has averaged 12,749 fans at Providence Park. Portland’s tallied an NWSL record 17,619 fans at the team’s 2013 regular-season, home finale against FC Kansas City on Aug. 4, 2013.
