LAST MATCH RECAP Playing the second game of back-to-back matches on the East Coast, Thorns FC and the Washington Spirit played to a scoreless draw on May 7 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. Portland registered its second consecutive clean sheet, extending its unbeaten streak to start the season despite playing without midfielder Tobin Heath for the final eight minutes as she was sent off after she received a second yellow card. Goalkeeper Adrianna Franch made her second start, tallying a season-best six saves in the match. Franch made several key saves in both halves to preserve a clean sheet, tipping a lofted volley over the crossbar in the 26th and making a one-on-one save in the box to deny Cali Farquharson in the 40th minute.
ROAD WARRIORS Portland has opened the 2016 playing four of its first five games on the road and six of its first 10 matches away from Providence Park. Thorns FC will have played 60 percent of their road matches for the 2016 season before July 1. Since April 23, Thorns FC have traveled 5,494 miles for road matches and will travel approximatley 11,246 miles in their first 11 matches this season.

MATCH DAY PREVIEW Thorns FC conclude their four-game road stretch with a match against Cascadia-rival Seattle Reign FC on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific). Saturday’s match is the first of four meetings this season between Portland and Seattle. In addition, Thorns FC and Reign FC will square off twice in the next 15 days as the two teams meet again on May 29 at Providence Park. Both teams will be without key players in the match. Midfielder Tobin Heath is unavailable after receiving a red card in Portland’s last match, while midfielder Jessica Fishlock is out with an injury she suffered back in Week 2 against the Boston Breakers.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendnace in each of their first three NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaing 15,639 fans in their third season in the league. Portland has produced record crowds in each season, including Thorns FC’s first sellout of 21,144 fans against Seattle Reign FC on July 22, 2015. Portland equaled that mark for a second time on Aug. 30 against the Washington Spirit. In its first three seasons, Thorns FC have averaged better than 14,038 fans per game.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS Mark Parsons was named Portland Thorns FC head coach on Oct. 5, 2015, coming to Portland following two full seasons as the head coach for the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. The former head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, Parsons, 29, helped guide the Spirit to consecutive league playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, posting a record of 18-15-11 in his two full seasons as head coach for the club. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season. Under Parsons’ guidance in 2015, the Spirit ranked among the top three teams in the league in goals scored (31), while forward Crystal Dunn was named league MVP. In addition, the Spirit Reserves won the W-League Championship, the U20s were national finalists and five Super Y Academy teams were also national finalists with Parsons at the helm as general manager. As the head coach of the Spirit Reserves in 2013, Parsons led the team to a third-place finish at the National Championships, while also helping launch the club’s academy programs. In 2012, Parsons helped guide the D.C. United Women U20s to the National Championship match, earning a runner-up finish. Before his arrival in the United States, Parsons was with Chelsea FC from 2004-10, working with both the girls and boys academies during his tenure, while also serving as the head coach for the Chelsea Ladies Reserves from 2008-10. During the 2008-09 campaign, the Reserves won the League Cup, the County Cup and the League Title for the first time in history. As an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy, Parsons helped lead the team to an academy championship in 2007. The Cranleigh, Surrey, native holds UEFA A and B Licenses, a US Youth Soccer National Youth License and US Soccer B License. Parsons resides in Beaverton with his wife Hannah and his daughter Edie (2).

Under head coach Mark Parsons, Thorns FC brought in several new players in the offseason. U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Lindsey Horan and defender Meghan Klingenberg joined Portland as part of a trade with the Orlando Pride. Selected to the FIFPro World XI, Klingenberg comes to Portland following two seasons with the Houston Dash. The 2016 season marks Horan’s first in the NWSL as she previously played three seasons abroad with French side Paris Saint Germain. Thorns FC utilized the NWSL College Draft to add depth to the roster as well, choosing defender Emily Sonnett with the first-overall pick. Sonnett was a four-year starter and standout at the University of Virginia, earning her first call-up and cap with the U.S. Women’s National Team as a senior in 2015. Thorns FC also made two separate trades to acquire a pair of international attacking talents - forward and Danish intermational Nadia Nadim and Icelandic international midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir. Nadim played for Sky Blue FC for the last two seasons, while Brynjarsdottir played abroad with Bayern Munich during the 2015 season after closing out her collegiate career at Florida State, helping lead the Seminoles to the national championship in 2014. France Women’s National Team midfielder Amandine Henry, the Silver Ball winner at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, will join the club following the conclusion of her contract with Lyon.
PORTLAND THORNS FC AT SEATTLE REIGN FC SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2016 SCOUTING REIGN FC Despite falling on the road 2-0 to the Orlando Pride on May 8, Seattle Reign FC return to Memorial Stadium where they have lost just one match since they began playing games their in 2014. Seattle’s only loss at Memorial Stadium came in their opening game of the 2016 season against Sky Blue FC on April 16. Head coach Laura Harvey’s side is led by two-time NWSL Best XI midfielder Kim Little. The Scottish international has tallied two goals and two assists for Seattle in their first four matches. The team boasts a striker partnership which includes Merritt Mathias and Manon Melis, both have tallied one goal for the club this season, while U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo minds the net for the two-time NWSL Shield winners.

IN THE SECOND HALF Portland has proved its been able to find a way to score goals late in games. Thorns FC have tallied four goals this season and three of those goals have come after the 75th minute in matches. Defensively, Portland has not allowed a goal in the second half of a game this season. Notably against the Seattle, Thorns have scored six of their eight goals against Reign FC in the second half of matches, including four goals in the final 30 minutes in the all-time series.
MILESTONES With her next shutout, goalkeeper Adrianna Franch will record her 10th career clean sheet in NWSL play. Defender Emily Menges can move into a tie for fifth place on the all-time appearance list with her next match played, tying Rachel Van Hollebeke with 45 career appearances. YOUNG TALENT The combined average age of Thorns FC’s roster is 25 years old and features 12 players 25 or younger. The youngest players on the roster: Lindsey Horan and Hayley Raso - both are 21 years old and have been playing professional soccer since the age of 18. Additionally, four of those players under the age of 25 - Dagny Brynjarsdottir (24), Emily Sonnett (22), Raso and Horan - have all been capped by their respective national teams.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS Portland is currently the only team in the NWSL that has two players who have tallied multiple goals this season: Dagny Brymjarsdottir and Lindsey Horan.
