MIDFIELD PARTNERSHIP Midfielder Allie Long and Mana Shim have proved to be a lethal combo for Thorns FC this season. MATCH DAY PREVIEW Following their second road match of the season, Porland Thorns FC play their final home match before the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup break against the Houston Dash on Saturday, May 23, at Providence Park; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific).

Saturday’s match is the first of two meetings this season between Houston and Portland, and the only regular season contest between the two clubs at Providence Park in 2015.

Thorns FC have scored two or more goals in three of their five matches to begin the 2015 season. When scoring two or more goals, Portland has a record of 17-1-4 all-time. Thorns FC have scored two or more goals in 15 of their 26 home matches all-time, posting a record of 11-1-3 in those matches.

HOME TURF Thorns FC enter Saturday’s game unbeaten in their last eight matches at Providence Park (6-0-2), dating back to the 2014 season. Portland has scored two or more goals in five of those matches, while also registering three shutouts in its last four home contests. Midfielder Allie Long has scored seven goals during Thorns FC’s eight-match unbeaten streak at home. Additionally, Portland has scored 24 goals, while conceding just nine.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC drew an average crowd of 13,362 fans per game during the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season and has led the league in attendance at better than 13,000 fans per match since the team’s inagural season in 2013. HEAD COACH PAUL RILEY Paul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after taking over as the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Women’s National Team midfielder and former Women’s Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and Germany Women’s National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Riley’s first season.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth development clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

Portland’s newest signing, Ayo Añonma, arrived in the Rose City lat week after finishing her season with Frauen Bundesliga club Turbine Potsdam. Ayo made her Thorns FC and NWSL debut against the Boston Breakers on May 16, starting and playing 68 minutes in the match. In her final match with the German side, Ayo netted her 10th goal of the season in a 3-1 victory over USV Jena. Ayo ranks among the top scorers all-time in the history of the Frauen Bundesliga. In 113 Bundesliga games, Ayo scored 84 goals, while also adding 24 goals in 21 German Cup matches. A notable mention is the fact that all of Ayo’s goals have come during the run of play, none from the penalty spot. While Ayo may not be headed to Canada this summer she does have experience on the international level and is one of four current Thorns FC players, along with Alex Morgan, Rachel Van Hollebeke and Christine Sinclair, to score in a FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ayo and Equatorial Guinea dropped all three matches in group play at the 2011 World Cup, but Ayo tallied both goals in a 3-2 loss against Australia.

Houston (1-2-2, 5pts) settled for a tie 2-2 against the Chicago Red Stars on May 16 at BBVA Compass Stadium. Dash midfielder Rachel Axon converted from the penalty spot in the 28th minute and forward Kealia Ohai doubled the lead in the 59th minute, but Chicago got a second-half brace from rookie forward Sofia Huerta to secure a point on the road. Houston is without six players due to FIFA Women’s World Cup preparations, including starting goalkeeper and Canadian international Erin McLeod as well as U.S. Women’s National Team midfielders Carli Lloyd and Morgan Brian and defender Meghan Klingenberg. Additionally, the Dash lost starting defender Stephanie Ochs to a season-ending injury. Houston made several new acquistions in the last two weeks with the departure of their national teams players. First trading Ashley Nick to the Western New York Flash for defender Toni Pressley. The Dash also signed a pair of international defenders, Brazilian Camila and Australian Ellie Brush and as a result waived Ireland international and forward Stephanie Roche, who was nominated for the 2014 FIFA Puskas Award given to the player who scored the best goal in the world.

LAST MATCH RECAP Portland played its first of three road games in its next four matches on May 16 at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Allston, Mass., falling by a score of 1-0 to the Boston Breakers. The match was the second of three meetings between the two clubs this season and Portland’s only road trip to Boston this season. Thorns FC limited the Breakers to just two shots on goal in the match, but Boston secured the win with a goal in second-half stoppage time from midfielder Kristie Mewis.

Forward Ayo Ayo Añonma made her NWSL and Thorns FC debut, starting and playing 68 minutes in the match. She also registered a team-high three shots.

THORNS AT THE WORLD CUP Thorns FC will be well represented at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada this summer. To date, seven players from four different countries have been named to their respective countries roster for the upcoming tournament.

Forward Alex Morgan and midfielder Tobin Heath will represent the United States; forward Christine Sinclair, midfielder Kaylyn Kyle and defender Rhian Wilkinson will represent Canada on their home soil, while the most recent selections to their rosters will be first time attendees at the World Cup in England Women’s National Team forward Jodie Taylor and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley. Germany is set to announce it’s official roster on May 24. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was named to a provisional roster for Germany. In recent action, Catley started and helped Australia defeat Vietnam by a score of 11-0 in a friendly on May 21. Heath tallied an assist in the United States 5-1 win against Mexico on May 17, enterting the match in the 62nd minute.

MILESTONE WATCH Midfielder Allie Long heads into Saturday’s match having played 49 career matches, all with Thorns FC, and will likely appear in her 50th career NWSL regular-season match for the club. Additionally, midfielder McCall Zerboni has appeared in 49 career NWSL matches heading into Saturday, while defender Kat Williamson has made 48 career NWSL appearances. In total there are 17 active NWSL outfield players who have played over 4,000 career minutes in all-competitions. Long ranks fourth among those players having logged 4,513 minutes and is just one of five players to have played 4,500 minutes in her NWSL career.

Midfielder Mana Shim has the chance this season to become the first Thorns FC to reach double-digit marks in career goals and career assists. Shim currently has eight career goals and seven career assists. Shim needs two more goals to become the fifth player in club history with 10 goals and three assists to become the first player to reach 10 career assists.
