MATCH PREVIEW Friday’s match marks the second of three meetings between Portland Thorns FC and Utah Royals FC this season. In addition, it is the first of two meetings at Providence Park between the two clubs, who square off for a second time on July 6. Portland extended its road unbeaten streak to four consecutive matches (2-02) after earning 1-0 win against Washington on May 19, while Utah picked up its second win of the season, defeating the Houston Dash 1-0 at home on May 19. Over the past three seasons, Thorns FC have scored more goals at home (54) than any team in the league.
HOME SWEET HOME Thorns FC have posted a record of 19-4-3 at Providence Park in regular-season since the beginning of the 2016 season. Additionally, Portland has scored in 22 consecutive home matches, dating back to the 2016 season.
LAST MATCH RECAP Portland extended its road-unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2), earning a 1-0 win against the Washington Spirit on May 19. It marked Thorns FC’s first win on the road against the Spirit since 2014. Ellie Carpenter notched the game-winner in the 68th minute, her first career NWSL goal, while goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom made four saves to register her first win with Thorns FC and her first clean sheet.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first five NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 17,653 fans in their fifth season in the league in 2017. On Sept. 30, 2017, Thorns FC recorded their fourth sellout in club history. Portland played host to Orlando in its home opener on April 15, 2018, drawing a crowd of 16,466 - the second largest crowd for a Thorns FC home opener in club history.
