After 200 years, Thornton Academy enjoys a long history as an independent school serving a public role – a Maine tradition shared with nine other town academies. Thornton Academy accomplishes this educational mission efficiently. The per-student tuition for youth from Saco, Dayton, and Arundel provides an important segment – 64% - of our institutional funding. However, as an independent school, Thornton Academy is not eligible to access other public funding, such as capital project funds, meal subsidies, laptops, and many other sources. In order to build the impressive facilities that Thornton Academy enjoys and to provide excellent educational opportunity for our diverse student body, we must seek other funding. Private funding enables us to fill the gap between tax-based tuition revenues and the cost of operating a quality independent school. Establishing the residential student program has enabled Thornton Academy to generate new revenue; the international breadth of this program simultaneously fulfills our mission of preparing all students for the dynamic and global community in which they will lead their lives. Private tuition, combined with generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, yield from endowment, and bank loans for capital projects, comprises 36% of our annual operating funding. For all of you who have supported us in achieving our mission‌thank you.

Celebrating Completion: The Hill Stadium Project The 2009-10 school year marked the beginning of our threeyear campaign to raise $1.3 million to expand and renovate our outdoor athletic facilities. We are excited to announce that we met and exceeded this goal. Thank you to all of our generous donors, Trustees, Development Committee members, and community leaders for your hard work and dedication. We are especially grateful to the leadership gifts from Dr. Paul Hill, Charles and Mary Virginia Yates ’32 Allard, and the Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution. Collectively, the Stadium Project funds accomplished site work, a new artificial turf field, installation of a state-of-the-art composite track, new bleachers, tennis courts, and the addition of stadium lights.
The 5th Annual Thornton Fund Auction, the largest fundraising event for the annual fund, raised over $81,000 and was attended by 350 people. Thank you to Auction Chairs Bill Kany ‘77, Ken Janson ‘72, David LePauloue ‘84, Kathy Boutet Santamore ‘80, and Jessica Janson ‘05. Collectively, all donors who gave generously to this year’s Thornton Fund raised $340,033.88.
Chris Williams, a soccer player from England’s Oxford United Football Club commented on the first semi-pro game in Maine, hosted at Hill Stadium: “Last night was a good night for the squad with a win against a decent Seacoast United Mariners side at Thornton Academy…the Academy had great facilities including an immaculate 3G pitch complete with markings for football, American football and hockey. It made things colorful and played well, especially after a fierce downpour as we were driving up.” (Chad Doyon Photography)

Preparing students for a changing world Thornton Academy’s curriculum offers a wide range of course offerings to students of all backgrounds and abilities. We offer programs that serve everyone. Due to generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, and to the far-sighted management of our endowment by our Trustees, Thornton Academy continues to grow its academic and extracurricular offerings. Thornton Academy has become the largest combined middle-secondary school in the state of Maine. Spring 2012 enrollment of grades 6-12 reached 1547 students. Over 1400 day students reside in Saco, Dayton, Arundel, and other surrounding communities; more than 100 residential program students (dormitory and homestay) come to us from sixteen countries. A commitment to excellence in education accompanies this growth. Each year we graduate an outstanding class of students. These graduates proceed to post-secondary
This year’s Thornton Players’ production of Phantom of the Opera (above) and the TAMS’ production of The Wizard of Oz (below) underlined the excellence of Thornton Academy’s arts program. The quality of the performing arts, studio arts, and new media programs at TA is garnering attention across New England.

The Inspiration: Throughout a distinguished career as an educational leader, Carl Stasio challenged and encouraged teachers to strive for creativity and innovation. Retired Headmaster Carl Stasio embodies the Thornton Academy mission statement, “Preparing students for a changing world.” The Right Moment: At no time in the long and distinguished history of Thornton Academy has the charge of our mission been more relevant. For the 26 years of Carl Stasio’s tenure as Headmaster, Carl’s bold vision led Thornton Academy to its stature as a premier town academy in New England and a leading secondary school in the state of Maine. The Purpose: The Carl Stasio Innovation in Education Professional Development Fund is an endowed fund that has reached $63,939.83, to date, thanks to donations from more than 62 individuals or families. Yield from this endowment will generate grant awards such that Thornton Academy faculty can pursue professional development opportunities that will enrich the academic curriculum and the quality of the student learning experience.
“When I think of the accomplishments that Carl brought to TA over 26 years, the essence, the core of all his effort centered on providing students with what they needed to succeed. A key is allowing teachers to facilitate that student growth. The only way to do it is to have the best teachers that we can have. Providing stipends for life-long learning is a way to support that.” - James E. Nelson ’67
“The true hallmark of Carl as a thoughtful educational leader has been commitment to his staff and to professional development, in particular. Once he asked you to do a job, he gave you support and with that support came the expectation that the job would get done at a high standard. I think I contacted nine or ten potential donors for the fund. They were all pleased to be asked; they all gave with enthusiasm and pride. They agreed that this was the proper way to honor Carl and his ability to develop other leaders. The donors wanted to honor him.” -Chris Queally

Taking care of business: Leonard Johnson ’47 joins the 1811 Society
Four generations and ten members of the Johnson family have learned their three r’s at Thornton Academy across a century - from the era of electric streetcars to that of smart phones. Thanks to a generous bequest from Leonard G. Johnson ‘47, his family’s relationship with TA will endure. “When I started out at TA, I thought of four long years before getting a full time job. I wanted to get out into the work force and earn money. But it went by quickly. I got my big start here, with math and all that I learned. It started here and I went on to a career in the Air Force accounting and finance system.” It’s not surprising that Leonard was anxious to get into the work force. The Johnson family boasted eleven children - a lot of mouths to feed in the 1930s. “My mother
baked bread and sold it for 11 cents a loaf. I picked strawberries for three cents a quart. I didn’t always have the five cents for the streetcar ride from Saco to Bid-

clothes on your back, and food in your belly. Everything else, you’ve got to pay for it.’ It took me two years in elementary school to save up for a bike.” Leonard’s financial acumen led him to serve as an accountant in the Air

Force for over 20 years until he retired in 1968. Whether stationed in Texas, Venezuela, or Hawaii, Leonard stayed in touch with TA. “Even in Korea (during the War), I used to get Postscripts magazine and it was interesting to keep up with what was going on.” After Leonard retired, he enjoyed investing in the stock market. He also started buying real estate and was instrumental in the construction of eight houses. Then he started his own lawn and garden equipment business, a successful enterprise that he ran for over 20 years. “If you run a business, there’s no such thing as a 40 hour week. Forget that!” Leonard once again lives on the 1700s farm that his father bought for $900 in 1934. He looks back on his days at Thornton Academy fondly, “Those were the best years of my life. There just weren’t too many worries then.” Leonard continues to stay active on campus, attending reunions and other events. Given his legendary skills as a dancer - he was voted Best Dancer by his senior class and went on to teach dancing while stationed in Colorado - don’t be surprised if the nimble alum with the best jitterbug out there is Mr. Johnson.
Leonard Johnson ‘47 shows us where he used to milk cows in the morning before going to school; (facing page) Leonard stands with his wife, June, infront of the barn on their 18th c.farm.

Hitting his stride How Andrew Smith ’15 feels about training in Hill Stadium and bringing home a national medal Seeing Andrew Smith ’15 with a national medal hanging around his neck (right), you wouldn’t guess that he used to hate track. But that was before he came to Thornton Academy. “I just (ran track) because my friends did. But coming to TA, it felt more like a team here. Everybody wants you to do well. The kids line up along the final stretch.”

Recently, a lot of people lined up to watch Andrew run when he competed at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet in Greensborough, North Carolina. Based upon times recorded in prior competitions, Andrew qualified for the freshman 100m and freshman 400m races; teammates Allie Pettaway and Derek Boissonnault (above left) also qualified but were unable to go.

He should know “I used to run on the old track. It didn’t have much grip. This one’s better. Faster. Other schools’ tracks are worn and slippery, especially in the rain.” - Andrew Smith ‘15
Andrew flew down with his mother Lori (Roth) Smith ’88, a Career Pathways teacher at TA and former track champion herself (see sidebar). “I went in to the preliminary race thinking ‘I’m not going to do well.’ After I ran - because of multiple heats - I had to wait to find out the results. It was nerve-wracking waiting to see if I made it.” Because Andrew had injured his knee during the first heat, he scratched out of the 400m race and went to the trainer for help. This is where his mother found him when she broke the news. “She told me I made it to the finals and I only needed to beat one person to get a medal.”
Family Tradition
Andrew’s first response was to call a teammate and friend. “I’m a competitive person. I like to beat people, but when I do team events, I want to win as a team and do great together.”
Competitiveness runs in the Smith family. Andrew’s twin brother, Dylan Smith ’15, is also a top-ranked freshman in Maine in the 400 and 200m dashes outdoors. He placed 4th in the junior division long jump in the SMAA championships indoors and ran the 1600m relay (with Andrew, Josh Wynne and Christopher Walker) that won the York County championships outdoors. Given that Andrew and Dylan’s parents were both Division I athletes, we might not be surprised.
And greatness is within reach of this 15 year old. After starting out the 100m race at the back, Andrew passed two people midway through the race and placed fifth. This national honor joins other accolades he earned this year, including new school records in the 55m, 200m, 400m, and Long Jump – all junior division – and Athlete of the Meet for the Indoor SMAA Championships.
Lori (Roth) Smith ’88, who teaches Career Pathways at TA and coaches varsity field hockey, was a two-time league middle-distance champion herself (600 yd. and mile) and her 1986 team won the state championship in outdoor track. Lori’s husband, Carl, still holds the NY state record in the 100m dash (25 years later). Carl was also an All-American in football at UMaine. He led the nation in rushing (all NCAA divisions) his sophomore year.
As for the new year, Andrew looks forward to new classes and training in Hill Stadium. He hopes to take the 4x100m relay team to Nationals this time.
Dylan (left) appeared to be following in his father’s shoes on the freshman team last fall.

Thornton Fund Auction
The 5th Annual Thornton Fund Auction, the largest fundraising event for the Annual Fund, was held on April 27th. The Auction raised over $81,000 and was attended by 350 people, one of our most successful auctions to date. With 263 items donated by local businesses and community members, we had something for everyone. The theme of our evening was a light-hearted recognition of former Headmaster Carl Stasio, helping to send him into retirement with fun tributes, videos and stories. A huge thank you to our Auction Chairs Bill Kany ‘77, Ken Janson ‘72, David LePauloue ‘84, Kathy Boutet Santamore ‘80 and Jessica Janson ‘05. As well as our Auction Committee and all of our volunteers. We look forward to next year’s auction, which will be held on May 3, 2013.

Cinderella’s Closet:
H el p i ng Stu den ts in N eed
Cinderella’s closet began about four years ago when a friend asked if she could donate her daughter’s old prom dresses to the school. She didn’t want to throw them out and thought maybe someone at TA could use them. Soon we started hearing of others who had dresses to donate. Mrs. Jen Merry, Mrs. MaryAnn Martin and I got together to try to figure out how to organize and facilitate getting the dresses to those who needed them. We currently have over 75 ‘gowns’ and about 10 ‘cocktail’ dresses. We recently had a huge donation from Simply You. Prom dresses can cost at least $80. I heard some girls spent over $300 this year on their dress. In hard economic times like these, having the option to borrow a dress can make the difference between someone being able to attend prom, or not. We opened Cinderella’s Closet for prom 2010; since then we have served at least 20 girls at TA and several more from area schools (we extended an invite to Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach). We are now located in a lovely space up above the Latin building. The custodial staff outdid themselves in helping clean and build racks to hang the dresses. In the past year, we have branched out and now have a collection of winter coats, hats, mittens as well as jeans and shirts for both boys and girls. The clothes are available to anyone who expresses a need. Last year the student council donated money on behalf of the faculty for Teacher Appreciation Week so that we have some cash to purchase something for a student if we don’t have the item they need. - Joan Folker Cinderella’s Closet takes donations throughout the year of gently-worn clothing appropriate for teens. For more information, contact Mary Ann Martin at maryann.martin@thorntonacademy.org or 207-602-4454.

We are trying to meet the needs of any student who is struggling
Lori Irving (right), owner of Simply You Boutique in Saco, donated 30 dresses worth over $5500 to the Cinderella’s Closet project. Irving learned about the project because of boys who needed a tux, but couldn’t afford to rent one. “My friends went to Thornton Academy and I’ve come across so many people from there that support the community and are appreciative. It’s a delicate situation. Some students feel that they don’t belong at the Prom, or that they shouldn’t go. I wanted to give back,” said Irving. The dresses donated by Irving’s Simply You Boutique join racks of others that have been donated by alums and community members. Maine Cleaners & Coin Laundry of Saco donated a roll of dry cleaning bags to help keep the clothing dust free. Irving also serves as a Homestay Program parent who hosts boarding students from Thornton Academy.
