a dialogue with saul walugembe An adolescent and young people program specialist with over 9 years’ experience at the Centre of social behavioral change and economic strengthening programs with two of the country’s profound organizations passionate about behavior change communication and healthy lifestyle promotion about young people. An energetic team player with strong project mgt skills attained during implementation, YEM, Straight talk foundation and currently spearheading the young people and adolescent peer support program, empowering young people including AGW with Baylor Uganda. How can we be empowered to know and defend our rights? You need to know your rights are God given in spite of the different characters and policies that try to highlight them.

So, the moment someone doesn’t feel comfortable letting something happen to them or their child it means they should not let the same thing happen to you meaning if its violets them it is liable to violet you too. As a young person, you need first to know who you are, your interests and appreciate yourself, then take that up and ensure that you are not making others uncomfortable with whatever you do which simply means that you are respecting their rights too.in one way or the other you need to always look out for others with a sensitive mind ok. Always be assertive and empowered to speak up about your rights and all the things that make you feel down. We behave mostly the way we

were raised up in our different back grounds and understand differently, so by being assertive and communicating/speaking up about your rights, you are also being respectful. Be aware of the different generations too that the way Saul will understand something may not be the same way your parents or a 70-year-old will understand. When you like your rights are violated you can need to report to the authorities. In our set up we quite several structures where we can report from starting from our family leaders or people who are respected in a family for example if it’s your parents who you feel are violating your rights you can talk to their significant others or the other persons they respect. It can be your granny or your other relatives and try to understand their perspective. And if it escalates for example cases of gender-based violence. This is where now you run to the police. There is a police unit in charge of child and family protection. All these are willing to answer your questions, help and protect you at all times. And then numerous development partners who have come with numerous platforms for example sauté which is a toll-free line where you can call and be assisted, the last one checked the number was116 and it goes directly to someone who can help you.

What do you have to say about LGBTR community? Well just like I have said that culturally, the motion of LGBTR community may not be understood by the African society, someone who has a strong

cultural attachment may be uncomfortable, but as a professional one knows some have attached themselves to this and it’s there right to the same services just like any other person because the difference in the way one treats themselves sexually does not away option {the fact that they are humans and they have rights} at 2. {their human rights}

youth scroll lock

Always be assertive and empowered to speak up about your rights and all the things that make you feel down.

There are those in same sex relationships who are also being violated or mistreated by their partners or the community. It does not matter what kind of sexuality you have; every one has the same rights and I encourage every one to reach out for services because you will be served not because of whom you are but because of what you need. Therefore if you fail into any of those categories do not hesitate to go to any facility or ask for help.

special thanks for your support

GENDER & RIGHTS

GENDER & RIGHTS Did you know that there is an estimate of over 7.67 billion people and growing in the world, and to some;this may come as a surprise; but the ratio of man to woman is 101:100(2021 estimate) According to the CIA world Factbook compiled in 2021. Meaning to every one female, there is 1.01 males. Basically, there are two types of human gender: male and female Being male is belonging to the sex that doesn’t give birth to babies while female is the sex that actually does. Male and female beings alike around the world live under diverse conditions and in many different areas alike are found different ways of life. Namely different cultures, different religions, different kinds of governments even different ways of distribution of rights. Some areas distribute favourable rights to the weak and fable so as to make on their living ways while others favor the strong so as to quickly development and in turn the weak are catered for in the process. A right in this scenario therefore, is a moral claim to have something or to behave in a particular way. A fair observation of rights in a present day society is widely considered as a backbone for proper unity peace and prosperity in that very society. Africa is one of the culturally diverse continents in the world and therefore presents a wide range of how different rights are observed.

In a typical African setting, a male child is raised and trained since childhood to be a sole owner and protector of a family he is to have once become of age. He is expected to become an heir once his parents are dead and take possession of all family assets. On this account, the rights he is to have are carefully observed as he is to become an essential figure for the family. The female in contrast is raised and trained to run a home, bear children and take care of them and in most cases, to blindly follow the male’s lead. And as such of course, the rights accorded to this party are but may not be observed as much as the first. This scenario is not only found in Africa but some Asian and ancient English families. Ancient traditions shows that as male children went to school to receive an education, joined armies and

obtained the highest ranks, joined the government and took up very prestigious posts, the female children we’re not allowed in school until the mid 1800’s. A few of these scenes had indeed created a gap in magnitude of observation of rights between the two genders. For present day however, The girl child and strong women have come up to advocate for a change in how this matter is being handled. In the process, initiatives like UWESO in Uganda and many other efforts from influential women like Maggie Kigozi, Rebecca Kadaga and on an international stage, Oprah Winfrey have been presented and this has helped to create a change in the scope of the matter. A case in mind, girl child education has been adopted as a vital element to empower women. The right to education has been equally observed on both sides thus giving the female kind the same energy to stand on levelled ground with the male. In addition, vocational education has also enabled girl child improve on what she already knows, this equiping them with skills for self development. Stands against domestic voilence have been taken and laws have been placed to see that women’s rights are observed too. Present day has seen women take up prestigious posts in government and the army alike with examples of Jessica Alupo and Angella Marchelle, the Vice President of Uganda and German Chancellor respectively. In spite of these efforts and many others, has the gap of rights between male and female really been closed. The cultural normal in Africa still rages on as the male is considered sole heir rendering the female incompetent. Women are not allowed to take up priesthood in the Catholic Church. Majority of women still take on titles of housewives and are utterly dependent on the bread won by the husband. Domestic violence is still one big issue around the world, with cases where husband beating their wives taking the boats helm. These are some of the many

Will the steps taken really be effective in curbing down the gap as given these scenarios. Some of these steps have not even tackled some of the raised complaints? But in my opinion, do they actually need to? Is copying and closing in on what males set out to achieve the only way to close this gap? Is this the solution. Difference in gender indeed gives a call to different in purpose so as to achieve a common goal. Difference in purpose though does necessary imply that one purpose is irrelevant. Such as, the female gender being able to provide create affords them a sole ticket to being the masterminds behind the future generation. The girl child of the world has taken over and empowered herself with many industries namely fashion, Humanitarian associates, Catering organization, Leadership such as that in New Zealand, the Queen of Britain and many others.

I kindly advocate therefore to all the ladies, girls and women out there that they are as human as any other human needs to be seen, heard and presence felt as need be. As much as there’s a fight for this cause, it all begins with how big you see yourself. If you accorded those very rights you need to yourself and those around you, if you believe in u, and if u live like u already have those rights... U actually should. Because you are as relevant as those rights should be observed for you. It’s in your mind.

youth scroll lock

Women soccer has been introduced and is becoming a catchy sport of the present day.

In this way, the girl child has been able establish for herself a platform that roars to be observed, rights to be respected, Honor to be earned and thus cover that wide gap in rights that ancient society had created.

Let the efforts all be put in awakening the ladies and the girl child to be a stronger, more confident themselves as indeed no one has the right to describe any rights for them, any better than they know those rights. “The male as well as the female are uniquely made, each ably sufficient individually and coordially able to create the dream, a peaceful, unified and thriving society.

cases that still portray a huge gap in observation of rights on either side.
