JOY OF THE LORD One of the most popular passages in the Bible is Nehemiah 8:10: “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Why is joy important? Because the “joy of the Lord is your strength!” Joy produces strength. And strength is needed to fight. You are called to “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12). I sense that many people are tired of fighting. They are struggling to fight because they have lost their joy. Perhaps you are tired of fighting for your marriage. You are fed up with your spouse. You think that he doesn’t love you anymore, so why fight for his love. You are ready to throw in the towel. Maybe you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. You have been sick for so long that you don’t remember what it’s like to be healthy. At one time, you battled this sickness, but the sickness seems to be winning. So you think, what’s the use, I might as well accept this sickness and learn to live with it. I’m never going to get well. Possibly you once waged war against your financial debts. But things haven’t changed much, and you’re beginning to get discouraged. You think that you are never going to get out from under all your bills. You might be having trouble with your children. You wonder if they are ever going to straighten up. You are exhausted from their rebellion. Is God ever going to change them? You wonder. I know how you feel. As a preacher and holding a full time job, I face many trials every day. I do my best to be a good pastor and employee. I teach the word of God, counsel the distraught, visit the sick, etc. Yet there are always people who are never happy with my performance. People complain: “I don’t get fed spiritually.” “The preacher didn’t visit me in the hospital.” “The preacher was not available to counsel me when I needed him to.” “The people at church are not friendly.” “The church is not open for me to use my gifts.” “Nobody cares about me at church.” After experiencing these and many other trials, I too want to give up. I lament over my troubles, what’s the use of trying to be a good preacher. They don’t appreciate me. I want to say, “Forget them!” Of course that’s my flesh talking, not my heart. My heart says, “They don’t know what they are doing. They are simply frustrated themselves. They don’t mean to hurt me. I’m going to rejoice.” This is what you need to do: Rejoice!
James 1:2 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” Pure joy is not happiness. “Happiness” comes from the word “happen.” Happiness, therefore, is based on what is happening. If something good is happening, then you are happy. However, God says that pure joy occurs even in the midst of trials--even when the car breaks down, or when the kids get sick, or when the boss cuts your hours, or when your spouse is in a bad mood, etc. Why is James telling us to count it pure joy whenever we face trials? Because joy gives you strength to fight your trials, and if you’ll fight the trials, you will overcome. James continues, “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (v. 4). You see, James has in mind “victory over trials”, not “acceptance of his trials.” So by rejoicing, you overcome your trials. Let’s look at one last verse of scripture: “`Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.’ WITH JOY YOU WILL DRAW WATER FROM THE WELLS OF SALVATION” (Isaiah 12:2-3). Notice that this scripture says that with joy you will draw from the wells of salvation. You need muscles--strength--to draw water from wells. Without strength you can’t draw from the wells. This is why Isaiah says, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” It takes joy to draw from the wells of healing, prosperity, soundness of mind and family restoration. Without joy, you can’t draw water from these wonderful wells. Joy keeps you strong and enables you to draw from the wells of salvation. You may be facing sickness. Yet God has provided the well of “healing.” But only through joy can you draw from this well. So rejoice despite your sickness. You may be experiencing poverty. But through joy you can draw from the well named “prosperity.” You may be tormented with fear, worry and depression. However, you can draw the water called “sound mind”--through joy! Don’t get down. Don’t get discouraged. The devil may be able to attack you (after all, he is the god of this age) but he has no power to steal your joy. Joy is a spiritual force inside your human spirit. Satan can touch your body, finances and family as the book of Job teaches, but he can’t touch your spirit. Your spirit is off limits to the devil. And since he can’t touch your spirit, he can’t rob you of your joy. Satan cannot steal your joy since it is spiritual. If you lost your joy it is because you gave it away. However, if you will keep your joy, Satan has to release your blessings.
Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” How often are you to rejoice? You know the answer, Always! You are to rejoice always, because “joy” is the easiest fruit to lose. You can’t live off of the joy you had yesterday. Joy can give you strength only when you possess it. If you had joy last week, that joy will not give you strength today. Joy can only give you strength today, if you have it today. This is why you must rejoice always. You might say, “I don’t feel like rejoicing.” God didn’t say, “Rejoice, only if you feel like it.” No! He said, “Rejoice always.” Obviously, God knows that you don’t feel like rejoicing always. Yet you need to rejoice always because if you don’t then you lose the strength to fight. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

✔ Pre-Ride Checklist
B
efore you plan your next big ride or even short ride on the weekend. It would benefit you to take 5 minutes and do a quick once over of your bike. Just the simple but sometimes most important components of your motorcycle. Check your tires for correct air pressure as well as tread wear and dry rot in the tread or sidewalls. Check your lights, headlights, spot lamps, running lights, turn signals and brake light a few dollar fix could keep someone from rear ending you or cutting you off. It also can keep you from getting pulled over and hassle on you ride. Especially those 1:30 to 2:30 am late night rides some of us to take. That’s the last thing you need is to get pulled over for a so called “tag light”. Also check your brakes, a quick peak with a flashlight and you can see if the brake pads are suitable for your ride. Have a safe ride. Jeremy

I went fishing this morning, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a Cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, and he went totally limp. I released him back into the lake, safe and sound and carried on with my fishing. A little later, I felt a thump on the side of the boat. There was that same damn snake with two frogs in his big mouth!

A man said to his wife one day, ‘I don’t know how you can be so stupid and beautiful all at the same time. ‘The wife responded, ‘Allow me to explain.God made me (beautiful) so you would be attracted to me; ( and then ) God in his infinite wisdom, made me (stupid as you put it) so I would be attracted to the likes of you ! A couple rode their bike down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of jackasses, goats, and pigs, the husband asked in a blatantly dry sarcastic manner, ‘Relatives of yours?” ‘Yep,’ the wife replied, without skipping a beat, ‘That would be my In-Laws”.

JOSIE– Hey everyone my name is Josie, a four year old pit bull terrier mix, and I have been told that I am the best cuddle bug who loves to have her belly rubbed! I really enjoy the company of people. I know several commands such as sit, down and roll over! I enjoy playing fetch and chasing after tennis balls. Food is a big motivator for me, I am sure I would learn even more commands/tricks if food was involved!! If you are interested in meeting with me come on out to BHS! SHORTY - Hello my name is Shorty, a seven year old Chihuahua mix, and I am excited for my new journey with my forever family to begin! I am a sassy older man so it sometimes takes me a minute to check you out. But once I warm up to you, I really enjoy being picked up. Just wait!! You are in for a real fun time with me -- I dance and spin for treats! I also enjoy small stuffed and squeaky toys, especially tennis balls!! I am looking forward to meeting my new family so stop on out at the shelter and let’s meet! LUNA- Hey there! My name is Luna! I am an energetic eight month old girl who loves to run and go for long walks. I am super friendly and love to meet new people! I lived with kids in my previous home. A few of my favorite things are belly rubs, giving kisses,
and sitting on laps. Oh, and squeaky toys and nyla bones are fun too! If you are looking for a beautiful young girl come on out to BHS and take me for a walk! SYBIE - Hello, everyone! My name is Sybie, and I came to BHS when someone tied me to a tree and left me near the shelter gate. I was so scared and confused! Fortunately, the staff here has spent a lot of time helping me to trust people again, and blossom into a wonderful companion. Tammy is the Intake Manager here, and she and several other staff members have grown to really love me. It feels so good! I’m well taken care of here, but now what I really want more than anything is a true forever home of my very own. I love going for long walks and racing around fenced yards, as well as playing with tennis balls and non-stuffed toys. It is unclear how I would be with other dogs, so if you have one, we would do a dog intro to make sure that everyone gets along. Through positive reinforcement training, I’m learning how to respond to basic requests -- I’d love to show off my beautiful “sit” for you! Occasionally I’ll even paw you endearingly in hopes of acquiring your attention... and a treat or two. If you are interested in sharing a loving life with me please fill out an application first. To ensure we all have a safe, happy life together BHS is requiring a low traffic home that has a fenced-in yard (no electric fencing) with a gate that can lock from the inside. I must be muzzled for vet exams and of course, when we’re outside of our home and yard, I should never be left unsupervised or be off leash. After all, it would be very upsetting to be separated from you. My adopter must have previous successful experience with a high energy dog with limited selfcontrol within the last 5 years. And to make sure we’re adjusting well, BHS will visit us at home. I am hoping there is someone out there willing to give me a chance and realize what a great girl I am once they meet me. Sippin Shine with Hillbilly And his Special Guests Chris and Donnie Davisson of the Davisson Brothers Band
The best part of writing this column is the people I get to meet. I have been blessed to meet and hang out with some of my favorite people. It seemed like I would never get the chance to hang with the Davisson Brothers Band. They are always on the go around the state. Our paths have crossed many times but it was usually in passing and we would say hello and promise to catch up with each other soon. I have to say most of you know how much I love the Marshall Tucker Band. I have listened to them forever and think it’s a crime they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you went out to my truck or my bike and pushed eject on the CD player a Davisson Brothers Band CD would come out of the slot. My cousin sat me down in his garage one night while we sipped some shine and listened to this WV band that he said that I was going to like. That was the only time I can remember my cousin lying to me. I can’t put into words how much I love this band. I can’t put into words how much I enjoy their music and live shows. My wife doesn’t like many things about WV (including me) but she loves the Davisson Brothers band. She can’t figure out why they aren’t more famous than what they are now. I told her Be Quiet! They are one of the reasons that WV is Almost Heaven. I don’t mind keeping them just for us in WV. I know word is out and they are headed for the big time. They deserve it. They have worked so hard for it. I got the chance to sit down on the porch and sip some shine with Chris and Donnie and this is that conversation. HB-Do you guys ride motorcycles? CD-We grew up riding bikes our whole lives. We have some friends and family members that have rebuilt old HD panheads and we grew up riding on them. We would use them all the time. We have several bikes willed to us. We ride as much as we can. Our bass player that is one of his only vehicles he rides it year round. We like riding those old panheads. Unfortunately we are on the road about 300 days a year and with WV weather that doesn’t leave much riding time. HB- You have so many irons in the fire right now. I don’t know how you do it. You have the concerts, writing, trips to Nashville, the new bar with Owen Schmitt in Morgantown and now I keep hearing about this TV show. Tell me a little about that if you can. DD-We have been filming about the last 6 or 7 months. It’s awesome and everything is real. They are filming our everyday life the things we have been doing everyday of our lives since we were little kids. Running around playing music, 12
hunting and fishing, our families, and the lifestyle that we live it’s really been a fun time and we’ve gotten to do some cool stuff. We are just doing everything that we always do. That’s the most fun of the whole thing I think. HB- This is the kind of thing that could make you guys rich. What do you think about that? CD- I don’t know about all that but it certainly could help. It’s gonna be a cable TV program about The Davisson Brothers Band called Davisson Proud. HB- You guys know that I’m a huge fan of your music. I even have Big City Hillbilly tattooed on my arm. I can’t figure out how you stay so busy and do so many shows. We do a lot of stuff riding for the magazine but I get tired just looking at your schedule. Your doing two shows today. How do you keep up this pace? CD- We are doing 28 shows in the next 30 days. DD- We have done that our whole life. It comes naturally to us. I will tell you it was a hell of a lot easier when I was a little younger. Sometimes we will do 3 or 4 shows in the same day. Last summer we did 4 shows in 4 different states on a Saturday. We believe the harder you work it will pay off someday. Everyone thinks when we get to that next level we will really be busy. I think it will be easier or just the same and we have kind of prepared ourselves for the big leagues. Hopefully we get there. HB- It does blow me away how many things you have going on. I can’t even get on Facebook without you guys popping up all over the place. Your headed to MD this fall and you are going to play at OC Bike Fest. Is this the way you guys planned it out. Keep spreading your music to new places? CD- Yes, we keep trying to get on bigger stages and playing with bigger artists. It’s like the old song about the family circle. We keep making the circle a little bigger hoping to make that next level. HB- Sometimes I wonder about WV artists and worry that they might just be labeled as WV artists. Does that label worry you? DD- We will always stay true to our roots West Virginia is our home and there is no place like West Virginia. This is the greatest place in the world. CD- We take pride in being from WV and we have a fan base outside of WV. We are going to stay on the track we are on and we are gonna hit Country radio with a single real soon and a video on CMT and we have the TV show. We are gonna attack it from every angle and see what happens. HB- What is the single coming out? CD- We have not picked which one it will be yet. We have
SEPTEMBER 2014

it down to two songs and that’s really all I can say about it now. HB- Ok but you gotta tell me when it comes time to announce it. I think the Thunder Roads WV readers deserve to know first. How bout you? CD- I agree we will let you know when it’s ok to post it. We would love to come back and do a feature when it all comes together. HB- That sounds great. I’m looking forward to September and the OC BikeFest and the chance to hang out with you guys. DD- We are too. We love going to the beach and fishing and playing to big crowds like that. HB- Where is this wild ride your on headed to in the future? CD- We just signed a record deal with the William Morris agency. We are hoping for bigger and better things for us and our families. We are family people and we want to make their lives better as well like everybody else. Our Dad is the backbone and teacher to all of us and he has been in the musicians union this will make things better for all of us. HB- Now when you guys hit it big you’re not leaving WV are you? CD- NO. We have made that clear on these trips to Nashville and stuff that we have no intentions to leave WV. HB-We didn’t talk about Owen Schmitt’s bar and grill and the Davisson Brothers Music Hall. How are things going there?
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
DD- Things are going real good there. Good food and family atmosphere. The entertainment has been great with all the acts that have come to play so far. We are getting a lot of the new national acts and it really is doing better than we ever imagined. Hopefully it continues to grow and we try to make it in there to play at least once a
month. I don’t have to tell most of you what a treasure The Davisson Brothers Band is and will continue to be. I’m glad we all can catch them all over WV and enjoy their music. I don’t know of a band that deserves to make it big more than these guys do. It’s funny every time I turn someone on to their music it never fails they come back saying I love those guys. I’m excited that the MD readers will get the chance to see what all the fuss is about at OC Bike Fest in Sept. Keep checking back with Thunder Roads Magazine MD, DE, and DC to find out all things DBB at Bike fest. It was a great party with the DBB as it always is and I’m sorry you missed it if you weren’t there. Well it’s about time to light up a Jaxsin Cigar and sip of the blessed shine. Remember to drink and share with your friends. Always lose the lid and hold on tight. I always save a little for the Big Dog. God Bless you all til next time. Summer is winding down and before you know it legislative session 2015 will be in full swing. As always we will be watching all legislation from across the country to see what new crap is coming our way. Recently we have dealt with the CDC stating we are a disease because motorcycle fatalities are an epidemic. (They need to stick to the flu). They have backed down on that issue. Obama included in his transportation bill asking for a national helmet law. Of course it was hidden in the midst of everything else so no one would notice it. We seem to be attacked from all sides. Recently a member said there was an article in Easy Rider that the UN is requesting a national helmet law. Lord, everyone is jumping on the band wagon. MRF and ABATE’s across the nation are watching all this stuff and we stand ever vigilant to make sure this garbage isn’t taken seriously. Forcing riders to wear a helmet is not the answer to motorcycle safety. Bikers know that. Helmets are not the only issue. Profiling and motorcycle only checkpoints have become a national issue. Some states have passed laws against these things and others are working hard to introduce bills against profiling and motorcycle only checkpoints this upcoming 2015 session. Including Maryland. We will be introducing anti-profiling and anti-motorcycle only checkpoint legislation. In order to get these passed, we need motorcyclists from all over the state to contact their legislators and to show up in Annapolis to lobby when the session starts. We will be putting out alerts to clubs and on our website to let everyone know when hearings are. We need to fill the hearing rooms. If you are sick and tired of profiling and checkpoints then show up in Annapolis when we need you. ABATE meets every Monday night during session at our office at 71 Franklin St. Annapolis at 6-630 pm to walk over to the Senate
and House buildings to speak with our legislators about our bills. It is important that we have a good turnout. It is hard work. Especially when there is only 5 or 6 of us. Show us you want this stopped by helping out. If each club sent one representative each Monday night, we could easily accomplish our tasks. My husband and I will be attending Meeting of The Minds which is presented by Motorcycle Riders Foundation at the end of September. This is a national conference with freedom fighters from all over the country and world discussing issues that affect motorcyclists. It is being held in Kansas City MO this year. We will come back with lots of information and ideas and will be recharged for another year of defending out rights. I will keep you updated on our progress, including bill numbers and sponsors, as we get the information. That way you can follow what is happening. Thanks for all you do in supporting ABATE of Maryland. We appreciate your memberships and your support. Michelle Holcomb Executive Director ABATE of Maryland, Inc.

BAKED BEANS & SPICY ITALIAN SAUSAGE 2 Large Cans of your favorite BUSH’s Baked Beans (I’ve lived all over this great U.S.A. and have never found a major grocery store without the Bush’s brand) (I like the Country-Style, but to each their own) 1 Pack of Spicy Italian Sausage (usually 6 to a pkg) 2 Small Cans of Green Chilies Pour your favorite brand of 2 cans of Bush’s Beans into a glass or ceramic baking dish. Add your 2 cans of Green Chilies and stir up good. Fry up your Italian Sausage links until they’re really golden brown and caramelized on all sides around. Move to a plate so that all the juices aren’t absorbed up in a paper towel. Let cool to the touch and then slice up in 1/4 inch pieces. Sprinkle all over your beans, add salt & pepper, garlic, smoked paprika and stir until completely incorporated. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve hot! Super Taste!

CINNAMON COUNTRY FRIED APPLES 2 Cans of Apple Pie Filling - Do Not Buy cans of sliced apples in canned fruit aisle. Get Pie Filling from Baking aisle. If you’re not a big apples fan, then get Peach Pie Filling. Fried Peaches and “Q” are good together also. Take a large, non-stick, quality skillet and add 2 big dollops of real butter to the skillet, on medium heat and let it melt down and get what’s called “brown butter”. Add your 2 cans of pie filling and sprinkle your cinnamon all over generously. Let them just sit for a bit and get a good caramelization on them. Then, take a fork and flip individually and stir around gently, sprinkle with cinnamon again, stir around gently as you don’t want the thick filling to get gummy or too sticky. Once they’re carmelized on the other side then just remove to a warmed platter from the oven if not going to serve them right away then keep platter in the oven, set on 250 degrees. These are so easy to make and taste like you took all day peeling and coring apples. Hey, it’s called K.I.S.S. for a reason. Why do all that fuss and muss when there’s plenty of ways to keep it simple but still come out with that fantastic taste of down home cooking.

THE SCUTTLEBUTT On an overcast Saturday the Thunder Roads Bike show sponsored by Rider Insurance headed out for Southern Maryland. To be more specific we headed out to Cobb Island Md. We were in search of a bar on the water called The Scuttlebutt. The ride to Cobb Island was great. It was early enough that we beat any traffic and the clouds made it a nice cool ride. Pulling into Cobb Island we could tell this was going to be a good day. If you have never been to this part of MD I encourage you to take a ride there soon. You won’t be disappointed. The Scuttlebutt was positioned on the left as you come across the bridge and enter Cobb Island. As soon as we were settled we had to take a look around. What a great site for a bar. It was the perfect place to have our final rolling bike show. It also began to look like the weather was going to cooperate with us and hold off on the rain. It looked like the whole town was turning out for this event. Seems like a Thunder Roads MD and Rider Insurance bike show brings out the people and the bikes. Bob and Nancy the owners of The Scuttlebutt proved to be perfect hosts. They were running everywhere trying to make sure all of us were well taken care of all day. Steve from Rider Insurance was busy helping all of us understand why we need to have Rider for our insurance needs. The bikes began to roll in and the band Vendetta began to play. The beverages and food were being consumed and the party began to kick into high gear. The judging for the bike show was done and we presented the awards and the custom painted gas tank by Whirled of Color was given to the Best in Show winner. It turned out to be a great day to hang out at The Scuttlebutt. For those of you that missed the show you can always create your own event by calling Bob and Nancy at The Scuttlebutt. Tell them Thunder Roads MD,DE,DC, sent you.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE RECAPS A NIGHT OF STARS UNDER THE STARS AT HISTORIC VIP REVEAL OF
ALL-NEW 2015 INDIAN SCOUT Hollywood celebrities, VIPs and journalists from around the world gathered to witness history with the return of motorcycling’s best handling mid-sized cruiser MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — August 7, 2014 — Indian Motorcycle®, recaps the highlights of its star-studded VIP party in Sturgis, SD last Saturday evening, August 2, at the 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The event was centered on the historic unveiling of the new 2015 Indian® Scout®, the first truly new Indian Scout to be introduced in more than 70 years. Scout is widely recognized as one of the most innovative, nimble, versatile and perfectly balanced motorcycles of all-time, and the stars were aligned as celebrities, VIPs and journalists from around the world gathered to witness its historic relaunch. Starting at $10,999, the new Scout is destined to appeal to riders of virtually every size and experience level who desire the perfect balance of style, maneuverability, power and price. Mike Wolfe, die-hard Indian Motorcycle enthusiast and host of “American Pickers” on HISTORY emceed the evening’s festivities. One of his first duties of the evening was the introduction of superstar guest Mark Wahlberg, a long-time fan of the Indian Motorcycle brand. Wahlberg, one of Hollywood’s leading actors and producers, talked with Wolfe about his passion for the brand before the shoulder-to-shoulder VIP crowd. Other Hollywood celebrities in attendance for the historic reveal included Kristy Swanson, star of the 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Alonzo Bodden, American comedian and winner of Last Comic Standing. Also on-hand all the way from New Zealand was John Munro, son for motorcycling legend Burt Munro, who was famously portrayed in the biographical movie “The World’s Fastest Indian” in which Burt Munro piloted a modified 1920 Indian Scout THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
to history by setting the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The celebration and unveiling included remarks and comments from Polaris Industries CEO Scott Wine and VP of Motorcycles for Polaris Industries Steve Menneto. “I am incredibly proud of the team that poured so much of their passion and commitment into designing, engineering and producing the stunning new Indian Scout,” said Steve Menneto, VP of Motorcycles for Polaris Industries. “They have meticulously crafted this motorcycle with all due respect for its rich heritage and its unequalled reputation for handling, power and precise balance, and carried that forward with modern styling, technology and engineering. It is truly a bike that lives up to its heritage and brings it to a new generation of riders.” To hear Industrial Design Director Greg Brew and Rich Christoph, lead designer on the Scout, discuss how the storied history of Indian Scout models influenced the development of the new 2015 Scout, watch the video at http://www. indianmotorcycle.com/en-us/stories/a-newlegacy. The evening was capped by a spectacular stunt show by the American Motordrome Company, featuring death-defying riding feats performed on a series of vintage motorcycles, including early Indian Scout models, on an authentic Wall of Death. The crowd was treated to the inaugural run of a customized version of the new 2015 Indian Scout on the Wall of Death, showing the superior balance and maneuverability of Indian Motorcycle’s newest bike. The American Motordrome Company continues its shows in the Indian Motorcycle display space on Lazelle St. during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally until Saturday, August 9. SAVE THE PATCH!!
If you’ve ridden a motorcycle for any length of time, or admired them from afar, you might be familiar with the iconic picture of a man on a chopper with a ponytail, beard/mustache, sunglasses, and a black vest with some sort of flag or insignia on the back. This type of vest is also known as “Colors” or a “Cut” and this flag or insignia is also known as a patch. Lots of organizations, other than motorcycle clubs, wear one-of-a-kind symbols to represent their group or organization. For Example: U.S. Military, Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Dale Earnhardt #88 National Guard Racing Team, Washington Redskins, Baltimore Orioles, Bowling teams, The Budweiser Delivery guy, just to name a few. So, what if I told you, the government could come and take away your prized autographed Dale Earnhardt Racing Jacket, because they had legally acquired the trademark or copyright because one of the members of Dale Earnhardt’s Pit crew was convicted of a crime. Well, it’s happening, right now in a court room in California. The Mongols MC is fighting the federal government to keep them from confiscating their copyright and trademark to their patch. In October 2008, as many as 80 members of the Southern California-based Mongol Motorcycle Club were arrested on federal charges of murder, attempted murder and assault, as well as gun and drug violations. As the result of a three year investigation, an operation titled “Black Rain” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, produced 110 federal arrest warrants and 160 search warrants were served across SO-Cal, Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Ohio. The ATF and U.S. Attorney’s Office held a news conference in Los Angeles, and in an obvious show of antagonism towards the Mongol MC, they lined a downtown street with several dozen confiscated motorcycles decked with Mongols cuts. “This may be the biggest, most significant bust we’ve ever made,” said ATF National Acting Director Michael Sullivan. “This shows how violent this gang was. I say this, because we’ve taken down this operation from top to bottom. This has more than disrupted this gang -- we’ve put a stake through the heart of the Mongols.” Ultimately, everyone named in the 2008 Black Rain indictment pleaded guilty and received sentences ranging from a couple of months to dozens of years in federal prison. As part of his plea deal, former club president Ruben “Doc” Cavazos both claimed ownership of the Mongols name and insignia and agreed to forfeit those to the government. Legally, Cavazos never owned the
26
Mongols trademarks. But by lying to Judge Cooper, prosecutors obtained an order from her that prevented the transfer or sale of those marks. Cooper later explained that the intent of her order was simply to freeze the assets of a racketeering defendant. But prosecutors interpreted Cooper’s order to authorize the seizure of Mongols items like bandannas, calendars tee shirts, and patches from innocent people. When she realized how her order had been misconstrued she was furious. And in July 2009, the late Judge Cooper wrote: “At the June 22 hearing the Government revealed for the first time that the mark it sought to forfeit was a collective membership mark. Previously, the Government referred to the mark simply as a trademark, which was ‘purportedly for use in commerce in connection with promoting the interests of persons interested in the recreation of riding motorcycles.’ In contrast to commercial trademarks, which are used in commerce and generally not entitled to full First Amendment protections, collective membership marks are used by members of an organization to ‘indicate membership in a union, an association, or other organization.’ The use and display of collective membership marks therefore directly implicate the First Amendment’s right to freedom of association.” “The Supreme Court has recognized that ‘implicit in the right to engage in activities protected by the First Amendment’ is ‘a corresponding right to associate with others in pursuit of a wide variety of political, social, economic, educational, religious, and cultural ends.’ This right is crucial in preventing the majority from imposing its views on groups that would rather express other, perhaps unpopular, ideas.’ Furthermore, clothing identifying one’s association with an organization is generally considered expressive conduct entitled to First Amendment protection. If speech is noncommercial in nature, it is entitled to full First Amendment protection, which prohibits the prior restraint and seizure of speechrelated materials without a judicial determination that the speech is harmful, unprotected, or otherwise illegal.” “Prohibiting speech of this nature constitutes an attack on a particular viewpoint. In a similar case the Carson City courthouse enacted a rule to prohibit admission of those with ‘clothing, attire or colors which have symbols, markings or words indicating an affiliation with street gangs, biker or similar organizations,’ because ‘such clothing or attire can be extremely disruptive and
SEPTEMBER 2014
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
intimidating, especially when members of different groups are in the building at the same time.’ The Ninth Circuit reasoned that the rule singles out bikers and similar organizations for the message their clothing is presumed to convey, and held that the rule impermissibly discriminates against a particular point of view – the view of biker clubs as opposed to garden clubs and gun clubs. In this case, the Government targets an even narrower group of individuals, a single motorcycle club. In addition, the Government has been seizing property, which imposes a greater restriction on individual rights than the denial of access to a public facility. Accordingly, the seizure of property bearing a Mongols membership mark should be considered viewpoint-discriminatory. The Government’s ability to seize property bearing the trademark acts as a prior restraint and cannot stand without a judicial determination that the speech is harmful, unprotected, or otherwise illegal. No such determination was ever sought by the Government, and no such determination was ever made by the Court.” To sum up, she was admonishing the federal prosecutor for misrepresenting the facts behind what the patch was, and how it was presented to her. She reversed here position and allowed the transfer and/or sale of the logo’s and patches. In October 2013, Armed with a 44-page grand jury indictment against the Mongols Nation, LLC, detailing murders, attempted murders, drug deals, and deviant sex acts. The Federal Government is again attempting to win control and the legal right of their well-known trademark. The fate of the Patch now rests in the courtroom of Federal Judge Otis Wright, with a court date set for September 2014. I understand what you may think, “That’s the Mongols MC, what do I care?” You’re right, why should you care? I mean, it’s not like you would allow yourself to be associated with “a bunch of non-law-abiding citizens.” But before you make up your mind, let’s consider this hypothetical case: a member of any prominent church denomination embezzled money from the congregation, or (insert federal crime here). Does that mean that the whole denomination should be destroyed by taking away their logo and not allowing them to worship together? How about this hypothetical situation, over the past three years, several members of your favorite sport team or league, have committed or been accused of committing a federal crime. Should we shut down the entire league? After all, if one is guilty, then all must be guilty right? Has it dawned on you yet, that this is the first time you’ve
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
heard about this case. Why isn’t this getting any national coverage on the news or on any of the popular news websites or even on social media? It’s because it’s a Motorcycle Club! And as far as anyone is concerned, who cares right? Well, this case will set a precedence. Not just in the Motorcycle community, but across the country. Once this box is opened it will be difficult, damn near impossible to close. There is a reason the federal prosecutors have picked this case to sink nearly half a million dollars into winning. Because in the court of public opinion, the Mongols MC is nothing more than a biker gang. Do you think you would have heard about this if the case was against a national boys club, where the boys are rewarded with patches for accomplishing tasks, and where several club leaders have been prosecuted and convicted of federal crimes? There would be an update in the first eight minutes of every nightly news cast. Do I have your attention yet? There was a rally this past July, at the VFW Post 467 in Westminster Maryland. The turn-out was impressive, over 50 different clubs showed up to support The Save the Patch campaign. Some of us met at The Woodstock Inn, and rode in together. We got a little wet, and then a little wetter, and at some point I think I saw a fish. It was all good, not one rider peeled off or dropped out of line, and more importantly, not one rider had to be picked up. We showed up at the VFW with a roar of solidarity! The VFW treated us to a genuine backyard cook-out complete with food from the grille and cold drinks. There were several speakers throughout the day, from the National and Local COC, several representatives from local MC’s and the Maryland chapter of Abate. The message was clear, it’s not just the COC or NCOM or Abate that makes everything happen; it’s the riders that make this happen and makes us strong, and fight for what we believe in. If the federal prosecutors are successful in their effort to mutilate the first amendment, who’s next? By – Mike “Bighead” Abbott Special thanks to the following people – Richard Lester – Founder of NCOM and COC - “The most important issue concerning patch holders in the whole country! It will affect EVERY patch from Christian Riders to the 1% Clubs!” Joseph Lester – Executive Director, AID to Injured Motorcyclists “Boar” – Liaison to all COC “Doc” Reichenbach – Chairman of NCOM Mitchell Greenberg – Attorney for Maryland COC - “We are fighting for the rights of EVERY motorcyclists”

HOW TO GET INVOLVED If you want to be involved, here are three great ways to stay informed: Maryland COC www.marylandcoc.org - The Maryland Confederation of Clubs (MD COC) is a unified group of Motorcycle Clubs (MC’s) advocating on behalf of biker rights with an overall goal to protect our biker lifestyle and eliminate discrimination. They have monthly meetings to increase communication between clubs and tackle pending issues facing MC’s and individual members in hopes of finding solutions. They address legislation affecting the motorcycle community and discuss methods to educate lawmakers and increase awareness within federal, state and local governments. Their members proudly demonstrate a brotherhood and sisterhood and share the same vision for the future. The MD COC is also a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). As a united voice together we can create and maintain an environment where all bikers can enjoy the freedoms that belong to us constitutionally and protect our right to ride. All MC’s are welcome. NCOM - www.onabike.com - An organization recognized internationally in the fight for biker rights. Abate of Maryland – www.abateofmd.org the largest association of motorcycle riders in Maryland, whose members have joined together to advocate training as the foremost means of reducing accidents and injury, to put an end to discriminatory legislation, to communicate via newsletter, to explore ways to improve the overall motorcycling experience in Maryland, and to provide for and assure a continuing freedom and affordability of motorcycling. 28
MESSAGE FROM
ABATE
United we stand. This Saturday, July 12th, was proof of that. This was the Coalition of Clubs first major event and wow did it turn out fantastic. Because of the hard work of the coalition and the committee formed to turn out this event, I am sure there were at least 400 people there. Over 30 clubs represented from across the state. Even clubs from out of state. The VFW post 467 in Westminster couldn’t have been better to us. They provided the food and alcohol and did a fine job considering the huge amount of people who came out. A huge thank you to them. This is a fine example of what can happen when bikers have had enough and decide to unite as one to stand up for their rights. I am so very proud to have been a part of this history making event. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the COC. I had several people come up to me and ask me why this is happening now and it never happened in the past. Personally, I think it is because of what is happening in the world and across our country. Our rights in general are being impinged upon and removed from us as citizens stand by and do nothing to stop it. Bikers have never been ones to just stand by and watch. I think with the way of the world now, bikers are fed up. We have had enough. It is time to stand as one and take care of business. This event proved just how powerful we can be if every biker in the country stands together. If we can come together in such short notice and put on such a powerful event, just think what we can do with time. We have all agreed that we are now on the same page and will stand up as one united team to battle our issues such as profiling and motorcycle only checkpoints. I see great things to happen in the future. I am so very proud to be a biker. I am proud to work with such wonderful clubs. Of course with all positive there comes negative. I have had people criticize me for working with the clubs. People who I thought were on our side. People who stood on the sidelines and waited for the clubs to come to us instead of reaching out to them. I am happy that I have a great relationship with clubs around the country and will never apologize for it. It is the best thing ABATE of Maryland has done in a long time. We are a motorcycle rights organization and that is what we do. We defend all motorcyclists. Including clubs. No matter what type of club. It makes no difference. Great things are about to happen. While attending this rally, we asked the following question: What is your thoughts with what is going on across the country concerning the Save the Patch campaign? “I firmly believe that the constitution should be upheld for bikers as well. This is a great thing we are doing today and I feel more people should get involved.” – “Gotti” President AZRAELS MC “I think it is a very slippery and dangerous slope. The most important thing that I would want to stress to anyone out there that rides a bike or belongs to any organization even outside of riding motorcycles is that you’re in danger. The danger is not what you think; so you’re a Christian group, Boy Scout, or what have you. The danger is you have an identity and a uniform the represents identity. What can potentially happen if you look at the big picture is bad. It’s the government restricting free speech in a way, and groups identifying. Nothing to do with groups taking up arms, just a simple fact that you have a club, group, or brotherhood that you identify with. To have the government be able to say that is not ok or is now Illegal needs to have everyone open there eyes to what is going on in this country. I don’t care who you are, where you come from, or even what color you are. Open your eyes and get involved! Otherwise, one day you’re going to be looking back saying “I had the chance to do something but now all I can do is where this black fucking t-shirt.” – “Seven” President LEGION MC “I think it is ludicrous quite frankly. We are a group, we are a lot of groups that all band together. We symbolize our brotherhood through our patches, and while we ride together there is absolutely no legal reason why we can’t were what we want to show our brotherhood.” – “T” with MC V(Five) “Honestly it is a very serious issue, because we are talking about 1st amendment and 4th amendment violations. The 1st amendment violation is freedom of expression, and freedom to associate. The 4th amendment violation is freedom from illegal
30
search and seizure. What they are doing with patched clubs is illegally seizing a freedom of expression. It is the same as seizing and individuals American Flag, seizing an individual’s confederate flag, or seizing any of that individual’s property without going through the due process that is established by the constitution of the United States. I am here representing Martyr Brigade VMC out of Hagerstown, MD, we are all veterans, and we are all combat veterans. All of us have served in combat against a foreign enemy were our commander and chief ordered us into hostile situation to defend the security of the United States of America, and it’s the same here. We are defending the Constitution of the United States of American for freedom of speech, freedom to associate, and freedom of expression. By wearing our patches and doing whatever we may, regardless of if we ride motorcycles or drive Subaru’s. For today, that is the purpose of this gathering of the C.O.C.” – “Tacklebarry” Martyr Brigade VMC “We are all in this together. Its fight now or forever hold your piece. It’s all about unity, all of us patch holders getting together to fight for our rights. Before they are taken away from us by our federal government.” – Surly Wenches MC “Came out to this event today to show that everybody’s in unity, all bikers across the country, different patch members, we’re all having a good time. What’s going on with the “Patch Law” is Bazar! I think the politicians should stay out of the biker life, let them ride first. Get them on a bike, Patch them, let them ride, let them find out who and how we are. It’s crazy the way the government is sticking their face in the biker world. When there are too many other things, a whole lot of other things, they need to focus on.” –“Teeter” President Archangel Riders “We are just pleased to be a part of this! What we realized a long time ago is collectively we could do more good, than we can do individually.” –“Flash” with Warfighters MC

I
Out of Order
may as well go ahead and start this month’s article with a disclaimer for my good friend and biker brother, the editor, as well as the Thunder Roads syndication. This column is my forum to share my thoughts and experience of club life, and I can’t say that my opinions are or are not in line with the publisher and the editor, the rest of the Thunder Roads Ohio team, the Thunder Roads Network, or anyone else. I say this because things might get a little “Nas T” in this one. In fact, I’ve had to self-edit this article at least six times so that it can be published. Unless you are living in a cage, I believe everyone is aware of what, in MY opinion, is the senseless, cowardly murder of Zachariah “Nas T” Tipton (40) on June 26 at Nippers Beach Grille in Jacksonville, FL, by an alleged prospect of a rival “association of motorcycle enthusiasts.” To call them as a “club” would be to assume they know the first thing about being a REAL MC, and in MY personal opinion, they don’t. According to most media and online reports, and I do caution that everything reported in the news has a certain amount of speculation and inaccuracies, it has been reported that a few members of the “association” arrived to a bike night being held at Nippers. It has been reported that there had been a feud ongoing with several real motorcycle clubs nationally, including the MC to which Zachariah was a reported member. So on this particular evening, it has been reported that the “association” showed up early with their patches on as an act of defiance to anyone who would imply that they shouldn’t, and they waited, knowing that the MC that Zachariah was a reported member of, also frequent this same bike night. According to media and witness statements, when Zachariah and others arrived, a verbal confrontation ensued. The management at Nippers reported that none of the parties involved had actually purchased anything, so they were not considered “customers.” It appears to ME that this “association” didn’t come for the cold ones, music, and a good time, but as is their “M.O.,” they came to incite a confrontation, then play the victim, as they have done many times across this nation. Nonetheless, the disagreement left the building and continued into the parking lot, where it was reported that the “association” prospect allegedly sustained a bloody nose, to which he THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
responded by pulling out a firearm and shooting Zachariah in the head and face a reported 1-4 times. Nonetheless, it killed Zachariah Tipton on the spot. A biker yes, but also a husband and a father of, I believe, three children. To this date, no charges have been filed against the murderer. Again, in MY opinion, there is a media misidentification regarding this “association.” They are not solely an LE (law enforcement) affiliation. At least the LE clubs have the wherewithal to put it on their vest and say, “We are what we are.” All of the MC communities I know, I see this particular “association” as simply a group of antagonist men and women who show zero respect for the MC lifestyle and code no matter their occupation or background. Their website says something to the degree that they are “law abiding” and that they will not be bullied by other REAL MCs. “Clubs” like these are make-believe in MY opinion. They are no more an MC than if I put on a lab coat and call myself a doctor. They’ve done nothing to earn their place in the MC society any more than I have gone to medical school. There’s an old saying, to which I’m fairly certain they have never heard because they have no MC history, that goes “The Man Makes the Patch, The Patch Don’t Make the Man.” Perhaps they all should do some more online research on what the true MC lifestyle is about. Yes, sometimes things come to knuckles in our world, but man up and have the ba!!$ to duke it out instead of shooting people in the face. Or, sell your barely used rice rockets and go back to checkers, or cricket, or crochet, or whatever you did before you started watching makebelieve biker TV shows and bought your first SOA T-shirt at the mall. My personal condolences to the family of Zachariah Tipton for your tragedy. G.B.N.F. To the “association of motorcycle enthusiasts”, as far as this REAL MC biker is concerned, you are OUT of ORDER! Tabasco Tabasco.TRO@gmail.com Have a different opinion? Let me hear it! Send me an email and I’ll share it with the editor for possible submission in the magazine if you’d like. – Courtesy of Derek Smith, Thunder Roads Magazine® Ohio

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC :
I
Life is too important
t was Wednesday, July 16, 2014. The weather outside was perfect - barely 80 degrees, sunny, and no humidity - perfect riding weather. I was tired and fighting a slight sinus headache but I couldn’t let the evening go without a little scoot at least.
After cleaning up my bike a bit (it got dirty from being rained on in Gettysburg), I hopped on and took my normal path for when I take short scoots...head towards Clarksville, take 108 to Ten oaks Road and then take the first exit from the traffic circle and go down Tridelphia Mill Road. Anyone familiar with the area knows it’s a fun little back road. It’s my “go to road” when I just want to get out for a bit. There is a lake that I always pass while in route. I usually don’t stop at this lake and if I do, it’s just to get off and stretch for a minute, take a drink of water, or check my phone. On this day, though, I thought I’d stop and stay a while. I figured it was such a nice evening, why not sit on the picnic table right by the water and just zone out for a while. Right as I pulled in, an SUV pulled in as well. I got off my bike as they were backing their SUV down to the boat ramp and as I walked towards the picnic table, the driver of the SUV, an older man, yelled to me and asked me what year my Harley was. I chuckled and told him it wasn’t a Harley, but a brand new Vulcan 900 Custom. He stated that he thought it was a Harley because it looks like one. As he helped his lady friend get the boat in the water, I sat down at the table and snapped this photo:
one winter day years ago. He also shared with me the time his motorcycle met and killed a deer. I knocked on wood because I haven’t dropped my bike. He started to say, “I hate to tell you this...” I cut him off and told him I knew...that everyone drops their bike at some point in their life. I’ve heard that from day one and I know it’s going to happen sooner or later. He did state that the more miles I have under my belt the less worse the accident will probably be. Point taken - ride more! Our conversation then went into him telling me about his stepson fleeing from the police on his motorcycle. He was doing more talking than me and I was okay with that because I’m a much better listener than I am a talker! He asked me a few questions like what I do for work, what area I live in, etc. We then started talking about ghosts, and guns. Much like me, he believed in ghosts and much like me, he believed that no one should be able to take our guns away. He rambled on a list a mile long of what types of guns he has. I told him I didn’t have one but I got my mom one for Christmas last year. I told him I wanted to get one for myself but I wasn’t sure what kind to get. He offered to let me shoot his guns at a gun range so I could decide. I told him I wasn’t allowed to have a gun because my family and friends were afraid that I’d actually use it on someone...he laughed and told me I should use it on someone if I had to. He was a bit scary with some of the things he said, but I didn’t feel scared; he was harmless. He apologized at one point for talking so much and he was sure that I’d much rather be riding than sitting there talking to some old man. I told him, not at all, I was enjoying the nice evening. I told him that my very dear best friend is 65. He asked me how old I thought he was and I told him 50’s, maybe 60’s. He never told me his age but he said he was way past my 65 year old friend. That’s okay because he guessed my age to be around 25 (I’m 35)! Then the conversation got a little deep. He sighed a little bit and then said, “I’m glad you are here listening to me ramble. I’ve been kind of down lately.” I told him I understood that because I have been so myself. Then he said, “I just can’t believe it’s been five years.” I asked him what has been five years but for some reason I already knew the answer.
Normally if someone is around, I wouldn’t hang out. I would usually walk away to another location or just leave but something told me to go ahead, sit down, and stay for a while. After his friend sailed off, he moved his SUV out of the boat ramp lane. I looked back to see if he was leaving or staying to find him parking his SUV. I saw him walking towards me and as he got closer, I hear him say, “Here you go.” I turned around to see him handing me a bottle of water. I accepted with a “thanks” because I had just been wishing I had brought a bottle of water with me because I was thirsty! He asked me if he could share the table with me since it was in the shade and I told him absolutely. Little did I know, that I’d be sitting there for over an hour shit chatting with him. Keep in mind that this man was significantly older than me but I didn’t mind. I’ve had many people tell me that I have an old soul and I tend to agree with that because I’d rather sit down and talk with an older person than someone my age or younger. I think this day, though, I was meant to be there at that time for him. He told me that he used to have a Harley. He’d probably be upset to know that I forget what kind it was. It was either an 86 or 87 and evidently they only made this kind that year. We started talking about bike accidents after he asked how long I had been riding. He showed me a scar on his wrist from when he dropped his bike 38
He told me that it was five years ago that his wife passed away. It all made sense now. I had a feeling what she died from, no scratch that, I knew what she died from but I asked him anyway why she passed. “Cancer.” I knew that was going to come out of his mouth...it all made sense now - why I ended up sitting there and staying when I usually don’t. My dad fought and won cancer last year. I knew 100% how this man was feeling when he started tearing up and telling me what it was like to watch his wife go through the treatments. I told him my dad aged 10 years in the year he was going through his radiation and chemo. He told me that was correct and he watched his wife age right before his eyes. We spoke about how hard it is to watch, knowing you couldn’t do anything to really help them. My dad was always a hard worker and on the go...he never stopped so it was hard to see him in bed all the time sick. I didn’t feel awkward while he sat there, visibly upset, and needing someone to talk to. I felt comfortable because I knew that he needed someone to listen to him and I’m just the type of person to do it. He told me that his friends get tired of listening to him ramble and I find that sad. No matter how long it’s been since someone you care about passes, I don’t think you truly ever get over it...you just learn to keep moving. I think people need to remember that.

I told him that one thing I learned from watching my dad go through his battle was to not to let the little things bother me... especially things that I can’t control. He told me that he hated to admit it but he didn’t learn that from his wife’s death...but maybe he should have. I didn’t admit to him that I seemed to have forgotten that over the past couple of months as I had been letting stupid things get to me and bother me. I needed that conversation just as much as he did, I think, to remind me what life is all about. We got quiet for a minute and I mumbled, “fuckin cancer.” He repeated what I said and we just sat there for a minute...I think we both were reflecting on our experiences. Finally he says to me that he had a friend that had a saying that has always stuck with him. It was: “Life is too important to be taken too seriously.” Truer words have never been spoken. It was starting to get dark and his friend was coming in from the water so I figured it was time for me to get back on the bike. He repeated that I was welcome to go shooting with him but I told him that my time is limited with two jobs. I didn’t want to extend our friendship further than that meeting. I felt like his wife brought me there at that minute because she knew he needed someone to talk to. Why ruin the experience? If I hadn’t have been there, he would have been sitting in his car alone while waiting for his friend and probably would have been more down and depressed. It was better to leave with him and I both feeling better and walking away with a cool story. As I said good-bye, he told me to keep it rubber side down and I told him to keep smiling. Just a cool story of how bikes bring people together, no matter their age and their differences... XOXO, Joyce Elaine

Mountainfest 2014 W
hat a way to end Mountainfest 2014. Thunder and Lightning and an Old Testament style rain storm. I’m sure Noah didn’t deal with that kind of rain like we experienced on Saturday night. I don’t think anyone was expecting those kinds of fireworks for an ending either. Things kicked off on Thursday at Triple S and at Mylan Park around noon. If you like good music this was THE place to be. There was music everywhere. Triple S had their stage rocking each day with groups from all genres of music. From Bad Mother Trucker to Jamiah on Fire and the Red Machine, Ashley McMillen, Kashmir, Hillbilly Gypsies, Big Engine, and the Marshall Lowry Band, you can’t turn around without hearing some good music. Some of these same bands played at Mylan Park as well. On Thursday Jackyl began the big name bands for the week and threw down a killer set. I honestly can’t remember hearing this band play any better. Friday was no different with Uncle Ted Nugent playing like never before. Was like he was in a contest with Jackyl on who set could be better. I know that Big and
44
Rich and Cowboy Troy were getting ready to follow suit until the sky opened up on us all. I would have to say it was a real classy thing for them to do by going to the Coal Bucket Saloon and perform an acoustic set. This is a credit to the spirit of Mountainfest and all of us that attend. None of the acts wanted to leave; they love playing here. Thunder Roads Magazine WV were proud to treat everyone to the Girls of Thunder Model search at Mylan Park sponsored by Kegler’s Sports Bar on Friday and also hosted by Kegler’s Sports Bar on Saturday night. The party at Kegler’s was excellent. Great food ,cold beer, and a lot of Hot Women. From the Staff to the International Bikini Team. They were everywhere. The crowd was great as we handed out some stress relieving devices, that defiantly got the crowd ready for the contest. We have to be sure to congratulate the winner of the 2014 Girls of Thunder Model Search Becca, who has earned her spot in the Miss Buffalo Chip competition being held next year during the 75th Anniversary of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The girls from the International Bikini Team also spent the day

helping remove all the dirt and grime from several bikes during their Bikini Bike Wash held at the Triple S dealership on Saturday. Some key features of the event has got to be the Vendors. The was everything from the motorcycle world and beyond here for you to buy. Hungry? No problem there was a slew of food vendors for you to check out as well. From gourmet cuisine from The Rolling Stove to deep fried pickles from our new buddy Pickle Pete’s. Thursday morning also offered a new feature that we were glad to see a number of people participated in. Country Roads Tour, led by the local Hogs and Heroes Foundation and supported be several other local clubs and organizations. The ride took you on a all day tour of the wild and wonderful WV back roads and scenery. We also have to mention the crew from the Wall of Death and Swoop Productions Motorcycle Stunt Team. Both shows were great and had a lot of people at each show. It was also great to see all the bikes roll in for the 14th Annual Cycle Source Magazine Ride-In & Custom Bike Show. Congratulations to all of the winners and Thanks to Cycle Source Magazine for putting on the show. No Mountainfest would be complete without mentioning The Coal Bucket Saloon. Bad Mother Trucker and the Bastard Bearded Irishmen were the entertainment for the week. Coal Bucket Saloon has never failed at keeping the party going to the wee hours of the morning and this year would be no different. We always have a great time at MountainFest and this year was no exception. Even with Mother Nature dealing us a big blow on the last night you couldn’t keep our enthusiasm down. It’s nice to have such a first class bike rally in our state. Thanks to the Mountainfest group and all that attended the event. Let the countdown begin until Mountainfest 2015!!! Til Next Year, Hillbilly

There will be seminars, candid talks about their journeys, “How - To’s” and touring tips so you will know how to get started on your own adventure! Benka Pulko, a born dreamer from a small Slovenian town, set out to be a world traveler at the age of 30 on a motorcycle. As a world traveler, Pulko distinguished herself on four counts. She holds the record for the longest solo motorcycle ride ever undertaken by a woman in both distance (111,856 miles) and duration (2,000 days). She was also the first person to motorcycle to all seven continents and the first woman to ride Saudi Arabia alone. Her achievements are documented in the Guinness Book of World Records. Rene Cormier cashed in his physical world at 33 years old to finance a mostly solo, unsupported and non-sponsored motorcycle ride around the world on a budget of $25 a day. Never one to let excessive planning get in the way of a good ride, Rene ran out of money half way through the tour and ultimately took 5 years to cover his 41 country, 95,000 mile route. Rene met his wife while travelling in South Africa in 2006 and they were married in 2010. Allan Karl has an insatiable passion for travel, culture, people and food. He has explored more than 60 countries all over the world, photographing, writing and blogging about them all along the way. Now a dynamic and inspiring professional speaker, Allan shares his message with captivating storytelling and award-winning photography that touch themes of adventure, the importance of following dreams and pursuing your passions. In his bestselling book, ‘FORKS: A Quest for Culture, Cuisine and Connection’, Allan brings to life his 3 year solo journey around the world on a motorcycle. Lois Pryce is a British travel author, journalist and broadcaster. She left her job at the BBC in London in 2003 to ride 46
20,000 miles from Alaska to the tip of South America astride her Yamaha XT225. Upon her return she wrote a book about this trip, ‘Lois on the Loose’, which was published in the US and the UK and also translated into several languages. In 2006 she got the itch again and set off on a Yamaha TTR250 to ride the length of Africa, taking in the Sahara, the Congo and Angola. Four months and 10,000 miles later she rolled into Cape Town, South Africa. Another book was born from this adventure, ‘Red Tape & White Knuckles’. She hasn’t stopped since making two solo tours in 2013/2014 of Iran on her motorcycle…a book will soon follow. Lisa and Simon Thomas, the husband and wife duo, quietly left their home in the UK to travel the globe on their two BMW motorcycles in May 2003. To date, this team has travelled over 348,000 miles (14+ times around the earth), ridden through 78 countries and travelled to the most northerly and southerly points on earth by motorcycle. They have navigated their way, unsupported, through some of the world’s most extraordinary and inhospitable regions all too often coping with the diversity of extreme weather climates. From sub-zero temperatures in Nordkapp, Norway to over 130° F for weeks on end in the Sahara. They have also taken some of the most amazing photographs while on this journey. The feature area will also host companies that handle tours all around the world such as, Edelweiss Bike Travel and MotoDiscovery. CIGAR REVIEW T
BY OUR MAN FLYNN
his month’s cigar up for review has been out for a while, but has an interesting story. The Obsidian was released about five years ago and upon its release no blender or manufacturer information was divulged. This was a pretty smart move by Abe Flores and his main product line Pinar Del Rio, driving interest through somewhat of a mystery. This cigar is constructed with tobaccos from four different countries, the most notable being of course the Brazilian Habano Ligero wrapper. This wrapper leaf gives the cigar an oily appearance with medium veins. The binder is a ’98 Criollo stuffed with Cuban seed long fillers from both the Dominican and Nicaragua providing a full body. The size I have selected to review is the Belicoso, a torpedo shape that weighs in at 6.2”x 52. The cigar has a deep brown wrapper with a large foot band that is simply black with Obsidian
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
in white lettering. The aroma that exudes from this great smoke is delightful and sophisticated. The Obsidian has a tight but ample draw once cut. From the first light, the cigar has a thick almost chewy pull that is peppery with notes of cedar and some deep earthy undertones. As you smoke down the Obsidian it gives off some hints of coffee and a creamy smooth body. This cigar has flavor changes throughout the length making it both complex and enjoyable the entire time it is lit. By the end of your 45 minute to an hour smoke, the cigar starts to give you a spicy finish with pepper notes. All in all I have to say that the obsidian is a great cigar especially at its price point ($6.00 to $9.00 depending on size/shape). With its complexity, great construction, smooth burn and of course the price point; this cigar should find a nice home in your humidor as it certainly does in mine.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
CONGRESS EXTENDS HIGHWAY TRUST FUND Acting hours before the government was set to cut payments to states for highway and mass-transit projects, Congress engineered a $10.8 billion short-term funding patch to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent through next May. Following several delays, the Senate approved a Housedrafted highway bill just ahead of a midnight August 1st deadline to keep federal money flowing even though the HTF has nearly exhausted its reserves because fuel taxes haven’t kept up with spending. The federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon, which helps finance the trust fund, has remained unchanged since 1993, and drivers have increasingly turned to more fuel-efficient cars and higher-mileage motorcycles. But the issue is far from resolved, as lawmakers failed to reach a long-term solution to pay for federally funded transportation projects and gives President Barack Obama occasion to promote his ideal transportation measure; the “GROW AMERICA Act”; a $302 billion four-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal which happens to include a push for mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide: “Title IV — Highway And Motor Vehicle Safety,” SEC. 4004: Amendment to Motorcyclist Safety Grant Criteria, the GROW AMERICA Act would amend Section 405(f) of title 23, United States Code by inserting the following: “SUPPORT ACTIVITY — The (Transportation) Secretary or the Secretary’s designee may engage in activities with States and State legislators to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws.” While the temporary fix will kick the debate into next year, after the November elections and the swearing in of a new Congress, don’t wait to contact your Senators and Representatives to let them know where you stand! SELF-DRIVING CARS JUST AROUND THE CORNER Cars that drive themselves are almost here. They’ll be for sale in 2020, if not earlier. “Prototypes have shown that the technology works,” according to The Kiplinger Letter, a business bulletin passed along to NCOM by A.I.M. Attorney Ralph C. Buss, “and major automakers are racing to commercialize it.” The shift to “autonomy” has already begun. Cameras, radar sensors and tiny computers let a growing number of new models park themselves, brake automatically, or take the wheel when drivers stray from their lanes. Think of it as cruise control that navigates, and never gets tired or distracted. Automakers are just getting started…advances likely in the next few years: brighter headlights that’ll double as sensors to gauge following distances and detect obstacles ahead; software with artificial intelligence to control the car and anticipate other drivers’ actions; new cameras capable of “seeing” lane dividers through snow or fog. 60
Though fatalities are on the decline, 30,000 people still die in accidents each year, mostly caused by human error. While not foolproof, safety advocates believe electronics and software can slash accident rates, and fewer accidents and less damage will lead to lower insurance premiums. Traffic experts also predict an economic boon, as autopilot software lifts productivity by allowing workers to do more while commuting, can keep older workers on the job longer, and lets more people work farther away by making long commutes less tedious as the car does most of the driving and coordinates with other self-driving cars to avoid traffic jams even in congested environments. Lest motorcyclists feel left out of the mix, Google recently requested permission in California to test riderless motorcycles on public roads. A prototype motorcycle that balances and steers without a rider has already been built by Google engineers. SPLITTING CONTROVERSY California is the only state in the nation that does not outlaw the practice of lane-splitting, in which motorcyclists use the space between lanes when traffic is slow or has stopped. Though not “legal,” neither is the practice illegal, and until now the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol were encouraging riders to do it safely and recently even published online guidelines for safe tactics to minimize the risk of accident. But now the CHP has come under fire from a state employee who charged the police agency had exceeded its authority by recommending lane splitting. The Office of Administrative Law agreed, and told the CHP to take down the guidelines, now removed since July 7th. Since the CHP’s decision to remove the guidelines, motorcycle safety experts and motorcycling organizations have stepped up to voice their concerns about the future of lane-splitting, which supporters contend decreases traffic and helps motorcyclists’ avoid overheating, and increases rider safety by reducing the number of accidents involving motorcycles hit from behind while stuck in traffic jams. AUSTRALIAN “BIKIES” SCORE TAXPAYER-FUNDED WAR CHEST Queensland ‘bikies’ will have nearly $180,000 in taxpayer money to fight the state’s tough criminal motorcycle gang laws after a landmark High Court decision ordering the South Australian government to pay the Mongols MC $178,000 in legal costs after losing a high-profile court battle four years ago to banish gangs from its borders. Bikie sources told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the money would be tipped straight into the bid to challenge the Vicious and Lawless Association Disestablishment laws pushed through by the Newman Gov’t. After covering legal bills, any remainder would go into a “fighting fund” to challenge similar laws being used in Queensland and NSW.

NEWS BYTES In 2010, SA’s so-called “bikie gangs” -- including the Finks, who later became the Mongols -- formed a united front to challenge the state’s anti-association laws in the High Court. The High Court ruled the laws obliged the state’s courts to impose control orders on bikies at the request of the Attorney-General and police, without any evidence. It dubbed the legislation “constitutionally repugnant” and said it undermined the independence of judges and forced them to find guilt “based on assumptions.”
STURGIS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2014 The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community, and The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists. For 2014, Deb “Tiger” Chandler was recently inducted into the Freedom Fighters HoF in ceremonies held August 6th at The Lodge in Deadwood during Sturgis Bike Week: “In partnership with the Colorado Confederation of Clubs (CCOC), she assumed the role of Colorado Commander of the Coalition of Independent Riders – a registration of independent riders. Tiger has worked tirelessly through the state legislature to address issues of importance to motorcyclists in Colorado including funding for beginning rider training and alcohol interlocking devices for motorcycles. She has also been instrumental in implementing a Biker Day at the Capital in Colorado as a means of opening dialog between bikers and legislators.” In addition, six others were named to the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame: Clyde Fessler of Harley-Davidson, Jesse Jurrens of Legend Suspensions, daredevil Jay “Lightnin’” Bentley, bike-builder Keith Terry of Baggster LLC, drag racer Bonnie Truett of Truett and Osborn, and custom builder Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation. WEIRD NEWS: TEEN FAKES ROBBERY TO BUY MOTORCYCLE The desire to own a motorcycle drove a minor to stage an armed robbery and even inflict wounds on himself to make it look convincing. The Pune Cantonment police in India detained a 17-year-old boy for stealing Rs 1.27 lakh from his THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
employer and later staging an armed robbery. Investigations revealed that the minor staged the robbery as he wanted to buy a motorcycle. A police inspector said the boy was working in Sankla’s travel agency. “On Saturday morning, Sankla gave the boy Rs 1.27 lakh and told him to deposit the money in the bank. However, the boy returned after some time with torn clothes and cuts on his wrists. He told (owner) Sankla that some unidentified persons stopped him while he was on his way to the bank, attacked him and snatched the cash from him before fleeing.” The proprietor rushed to the police station with the boy, where the inspector later noted: “I became suspicious as the cuts on the boy’s wrists looked self-inflicted. Moreover, he was unable to give proper description of the robbers. We then detained the boy and during sustained interrogation, he admitted that he had staged the robbery because the boy said he wanted to buy a motorcycle and, therefore, hatched the plot.” THE TALIBAN ENDORSES HONDA Taliban-published Azan magazine is quick to condemn America, but loves the Honda CG125. They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but Honda can’t be too pleased with the rave review it received from “Azan,” a quarterly magazine published by the Taliban. An English-language publication, “Azan” is radical propaganda intended to recruit disillusioned Muslims. The cover story for its third issue dealt with how to leave your life behind to join in the Jihad against the West, but buried in the pages of the issue was a full page spread titled “Steeds of War” that highlights the virtues of Honda’s CG125 as a vehicle of choice for the Mujahideen. “All Praise is due to Allah Who has made the Crusaders flee with a humilating defeat at the hands of the Mujahideen who have so little resources compared to them. We, the Mujahidin, have won the war with HONDA 125s valued at around $700,” the magazine boasts. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “No one wants to pick a fight with a group that can write 100 letters in a week.” Iowa State Senator Matt McCoy, on why ABATE is successful at fighting helmet laws
