New Beginnings

cherished, beloved son or daughter and in which I therefore have provided for me all I need, all day long.

After this Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years (Job 42:16-17)

Will it be on that basis? If it is, this year my life will be characterized by peace, joy, hope and love. That is the choice before us, every one of us. How are we going to live in this season?

The book of Job ends on a note of contentment and peace. Job was probably about seventy when the book opens, so he is an old man. What a picture of peace, a contented man. God had greatly blessed him.

Before us stretches a new destinations, new journeys, new friends and a new beginning. The old is past, put away forever. I recently saw this quote, “No one can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending” (Unknown). I really began to think about that statement. The conclusion was that we don’t start over; but we begin again right where we are, making things better in our lives. We’ve all heard it said, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Pretty true, wouldn’t you say? What if you made a commitment today that would change everything in your future? Yes, it’s true that all of us have a history, a slew of years behind us with all sorts of things, both good and bad, that occurred in them. However, we excuse our actions today by blaming them on what happened in the past.

Before us stretches a new riding season. The past season gone forever. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14) 12

The Lord invites us always to forget about all the distrust and fears, all the anxieties of the past, all the resentments we have been holding against others, all the grudges, all the criticisms-to put them away and begin again. The question is (and I feel it deeply in my own heart), how am I going to live during this riding season? Will I accept the gift of God that is waiting for me every day, fresh from His hand, a gift of forgiveness, of righteousness already mine, of a relationship in which He is my dear Father and I am his

Watch the nightly news. See how we excuse serial killers because they were abused as children. Feel sorry for the rapist because he was influenced by pornography. Excuse our codependency and our compulsive behavior and our many, many other actions because someone did something awful to us ten, twenty, thirty years ago. Hate all men because your first husband was a louse. Consider all women worthless because your first wife slept around on you. Have a lousy marriage because the only one you ever witnessed was your parents’ lousy marriage. It goes on and on and on, doesn’t it? But that’s because the majority of us look just like Meryl Streep in “Death Becomes Her” -- we’re running around with our heads turned totally backward, unable to deal properly with the present because we’re so busy looking at the past. If you’re a Christian who is living with your eyes on the past, you need to be reminded that you are a New creation! Because... “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come!” If you are a believer, your past has been dealt with...now you have a bright and beautiful future. Make a new and a strong commitment today - one that begins the rest of your life. Commit to stop dwelling on your past -- something that is gone, non- retrievable, non-existent -- and start living in the bright and beautiful today that Jesus Christ has given you A New Ending this year begins with a New Beginning!

3-D HEAD CUSTOM PAINT® KNOXVILLE, TN 865-621-9836 Ask for KENNY or TONY

‘Mom, may I take the dog for a walk around the block?’ Mom replies, ‘No, because she is in heat.’ “What’s that mean?’ asked little Suzie. ‘Go ask your father. I think he’s in the garage.’ Little Suzie goes to the garage and says, ‘Dad, may I take Belle for a walk around the block? I asked Mom, but she said Belle was in heat, and to come to ask you.’ Dad said, ‘Bring Belle over here.’ He took a rag, soaked it with turpentine, and scrubbed the dog’s backside with it to disguise the scent, and said ‘OK, you can go now, but keep Belle on the leash and only go one time round the block.’ The little girl left and returned a few minutes later with no Belle on the leash. Totally surprised, Dad asked, ‘Where’s Belle?’ Little Suzie said, ‘She ran out of gas about halfway down the block, so another dog is pushing her home.’ _______________________________________________ A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine that stated Dr. Bumbutu in Africa could enlarge your breast without surgery. So she decided to go to Dr. Bumbutu to see if he could help her. Dr. Bumbutu advised her, ‘Every day after your shower, rub your chest and say, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies!’ She did this faithfully for several months, and to her utter amazement she grew a terrific D-cup rack! One morning she was running late, got on the bus, and in a panic realized she had forgotten her morning ritual. Frightened she might lose her lovely boobs if she didn’t recite the ritualistic rhyme, she stood right there in the middle aisle of the bus, closed her eyes and said, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies.’ A guy sitting nearby looked at her and asked ‘Oh! Are you a patient of Dr. Bumbutu’s?’ ‘Yes I am.. How did you know?’ He winked and whispered, ‘Hickory dickory dock...’

When little Tony Soprano returned home from elementary school, in his youth, he told his Dad he got an F in math. “Why?” asks the father? “The teacher asked ‘How much is 2 x 3’, I said “6’”, replies Tony. “But that’s right!” says his dad. “Yeah, but then she asked me “How much is 3 x 2?’” “What’s the f***ing difference?” asks the father. “That’s what I said!”, little Tony yells. ________________________________________________ Flawless Male Logic: Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about 3 Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: Approx. 20 years Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5,400. correct? Man: Yes, sounds correct Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000, correct? Man: Again, sounds correct Woman: Do you know that if you didn’t drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No, I do not. Man: Then where the hell is your Ferrari?

SHAKE, RATTLE AND WTF!!!

f you are the proud owner of a rubber mounted V-Twin Harley Davidson motorcycle, you may or may not have noticed an excessive amount of vibration coming from your motorcycle. If your motorcycles model year is older than 2006, you can bet on replacing the front motor mount. Regardless of the year, you should check the front motor mount for wear. They can wear and break rather quickly. Some riders don’t notice the problem, but the motorcycles chassis does. Without the proper isolation of motor vibrations, many other problems can occur, such as oil leaks, stresses on wiring connections and stress on engine and transmission cases which can be a costly endeavor. So if your motorcycle is shaking and rattling, bring it in and let us fix it before you end up saying WTF!!! Riding season is here, be sure to stay safe and keep the shiny side up! ur Thunder Roads Rolling Bike Show took us to Battley Cycles in Gaithersburg Maryland for their Open House on May 3rd. Rider Insurance was there giving away T-shirts and free quotes. Rider only sells motorcycle insurance, so they know what they are talking about when it comes to insuring your ride. In addition to the many vendors, Battley Cycles put on a Fashion Show of the latest Harley Davidson designs, provided free food, and did demo rides on the new Street 500 and 750. Battley Cycles only carries premium brand motorcycles, motorclothes, and safety gear. So if you ride a Harley Davidson, BMW, Ducati or Yamaha, it’s

your one-stop-shop for all your riding needs. Entertaining you on stage and throughout the crowd was Washington’s own Blue-Rock legend, Gary Brown and the Bushmaster’s. It was another great day to be on the bike and hanging out with friends. We want to thank everyone that came out to support our show. Our Next Show will be at Harley Davidson of Baltimore, and there will be more live entertainment and a Pin-up contest. Bighead

Sippin Shine with Hillbilly and my guest Halo from Black Lotus Tattoo and Ink Masters

Y

ou know it’s gonna be a good interview when you show up and your guest asks you where’s the shine? I was scrambling to make this interview and forgot the shine. There is no excuse ever good enough for not bringing the shine. I promise to make it up to Halo at a later date. I really appreciate Halo giving me this interview on such short notice. After spending a couple of hours with him I realized this is the kind of person he is. I really enjoyed getting to know him and spend some time with him. It’s kind of surreal talking to someone that you have been watching for a bunch of weeks on television and now he’s here in front of you. If Halo was one of your favorites on the show then you will be glad to know that the time I spent with him confirmed that he is the same off camera. He is just a good guy. We sat down and talked while he was giving a tattoo to a client. I bet the guy getting the tattoo is glad I forgot the shine. HB- Do you ride or own a bike? Halo- Yes, I’ve been riding since I was about 18. I have a Honda Fury Chopper and a Yamaha Road Star Silverado, and I just got rid of a couple of crotch rockets. HB- Sounds like you’re feeling the need for some speed. Sound right? Halo- You bet. It’s all about the fun and I don’t have a 401k or a retirement plan so I am going to live it up. HB- What gave you the idea to go on Ink Masters? Halo- The shop. I had turned them down before and thought this might be the time. I turned them down for season 2 and then Sarah Miller recommended me for season 3 and I said no I wasn’t really interested and then I opened Black Lotus and I had my friend Kyle Dunbar recommend me for season 4. When you are given a recommendation you automatically get an interview. So when I opened the shop I knew I had to 22

give it a shot. It would benefit everyone here and it seemed silly not to do it. It would be a great experience. It was the right time in my life and with opening of the shop everything just fell into place. HB- How long were you away taping for the show? Halo-All of November and December of 2013. HB- Did you know your competition ahead of time or do they keep that from you? Halo- I knew them but I didn’t know them before we got there. It was like I know that guy or girl and I’ve seen them at a show or something. I really knew their work more then I knew the person. None of the people besides Kyle Dunbar I knew personally. Kyle and I have worked side by side at a couple of shows together and he is one of my good buddies. HB - I always ask people after they do JUNE 2014

a reality show like this do you have any regrets or want a do over on anything now that you have had the chance to see yourself on the show? Halo - No not at all. I went in whole heartedly, this is who I am. I didn’t try and pretend to be anything or anybody I wasn’t. I was gonna be me and that was gonna be a regret free path that I could take. I am really happy about where I made it and how I came out on the show. HB - Now in all honesty I didn’t feel like you deserved to be put off the show when you left. How did you feel? Halo- Yes I was a little bummed about it too. It seemed like everyone has some mixed feelings about it. If you’re playing to win you have to take the path that leads to the win and I thought the choice I made would lead me to the win. Not every football team wins every game and the point is I tried my best and I did it with integrity and that’s how I played the game and I can live with it. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

HB- Now you mentioned Kyle a couple of times and you know I gotta ask about the big fight Blow up episode. What did you think? Halo-You know there is so much more that you don’t get to see in the episode that airs each week. They didn’t show it as much on television but they really picked at Kyle really hard. With Kyle being a friend of mine we had a sit down and I told him you need to chill out it’s not real but as a man I felt like it got a little personal and if it is a competition it shouldn’t be getting so personal. You shouldn’t be lobbing personal shots at people and you should be unbiased. I don’t think they were unbiased and Kyle being a man had to get off his chest what he felt he had to say and do. HB - How many years have been tattooing and is this your first shop? Halo - I’ve been tattooing for ten years and I promised myself that I wouldn’t open a shop before I was in business for at least ten years and here we are. HB - How is the business doing? Halo - The business is doing well. It was doing great before the show. Now that the show has aired the major difference is the wait time. I’m booked pretty solid but that’s a good problem to have. The other artists that I have in the shop are really good and they are filling up their schedules as well. We all tattoo everyday and we all have our THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

own clients. The good thing about this is we can all be a little bit choosey about our work. We can start taking on more impressive pieces and do the pieces we have always wanted to do instead of doing whatever walks in the door. I don’t want that to sound bad but it’s nice to be able to work from appointments now and that’s a positive thing for all of us here at the shop. HB- Do you see a difference in your clientele now? Halo- Well yes you know it used to be just the biker and outlaw or convict coming in and picking a design off the wall and getting a tattoo. Now doctors and lawyers are coming in and getting full back pieces and things and you wouldn’t know they have a tattoo because they have it covered in a suit and tie. My girl is getting her PhD and you wouldn’t know that she is tattooed from head to toe unless she let you know. That’s the good part but the bad part is that now everyone is a critic and for $300.00 you can buy a tattoo kit and start doing them in your kitchen. People are going about it the wrong way and the respect for the craft is missing. It’s a double edged sword. Ink Masters is a show that I respect for the fact that it forces the typical client to be a little more microscopic about portfolio searching. It’s no longer walk in a shop and I want that off of the wall. Now it’s like I need to make JUNE 2014

sure this guy does the style I want. Ink Masters exposes people that may have been tattooing for twenty years and so what you still suck. It doesn’t matter how many awards that you have won you may not be any good. It helps you realize that there are some good artists and you have to look until you find the one that suits you. HB- Who are you rooting for and who do you think will win the show? Halo- I’m looking at Sausage and Matti they are my favorites. Matti and I had a good ending to the show. We had a heart to heart talk. Sausage is doing this to put his kids through college and I think that is admirable that he is doing it for his family. People that can be selfless and do it for others I’m a big fan of that. It’s such a rare thing nowadays. I like that and if you’re doing it for like an ego boost I will probably root for the one doing it for his family. I honestly liked pretty much everyone on the show there really weren’t any that I didn’t like. I became friends with most of the people on the show and we still stay in touch with each other and I hope that continues. Some of the guys and gals are going to do guest spots here and I will do it at their shop as well. We also will be doing some conventions together. You can find out that kind of information at our website www.blacklotustattoos.com and be sure to like us on our facebook page. continued... 23

HB- Every show has a bad guy and it seems that Scott was the man this year. What did you think about him? Halo- I think Scott let the show get to him a little too much. I would always rather be a people’s favorite than being a paper favorite. What Scott said was usually the truth every time. He was ruthless in the competition and remember it is a competition. Off the show Scott is a good guy and he is a friend. I got tattooed by him on the show in the middle of us going at each other. HB- How much of what we see is really what happens on the show? Halo- The order of what you see things and the lack of some sentences definitely are not the way I remember them happening. Most of it though is pretty true to what you see each week. The critiques take nine hours and it takes about forty hours in three days to do the show. There are times where you have to take a 45 second sentence and make it 10 seconds long. You can see how some things get left out. I will be watching and say that’s not exactly how I said that or what happened to the rest. All in all they are good at what they do and know what they are doing. Facial expressions are shot before the critiques happen and that’s how you get the editing. Welcome to the magic of television. HB- So if they call and say we are doing an Ink Masters All Stars would you go back? Halo- I would go back and do an All Star edition, but a regular competition show again next year, no. I have no interest and I think I left the show on a good note with no regrets. I left on a good tattoo and I left with a decent representation of my character. I might be stressed out a second time around you never know. It was hard to leave my girl for 2 months and I don’t think I would like to do that again. I really enjoyed spending this time at the Black Lotus Tattoo shop in Severn, M.D. It is also the neighborhood that Halo grew up in. If you watched any of the shows you know he did Maryland proud. I got a chance to watch him work and see some of the work his shop has done and I know you would love a tattoo by this shop. Give Emily a call and tell her Hillbilly sent you. I want to Thank everyone at Black Lotus for their hospitality and making me welcome. Now remember when you are sippin the shine always lose the lid, move around the circle for best results, and always share with your friends. I got a new rule for sippin always give the Big Dog his due. Til next time follow a leader not an imposter. Hillbilly 24

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee

BACKYARD GRILL TIPS: During Spring & Summer, we use our grill for almost every supper. Here’s some time proven tips that truly make a difference. SIMPLE, MEAT MARINADE: AT LEAST 5 GENERATIONS STRONG! Always let your meat be room temperature. Cold meat does not absorb a marinade easily. But light your grill and let it get good & hot. I’ve used this marinade my entire life for steak and it’s literally been used for 5 generations back that my Mom could recall......and it’s so incredibly simple: Take room temp. steaks and squeeze mustard all on one side; rub it in good, making sure to get the sides Then, drizzle Worcestershire Sauce all over top of the mustard. This is when you add any spices you want; salt & pepper ( we add this again slightly when actually grilling too), garlic powder if you like it Now, just let it sit for only 5 minutes. That’s it. That simple. There’s something in the ingredients of the mustard (which has been around over 100 years) & the Worcestershire Sauce (which has been around over 100 years) that when combined, make up for a perfect meat tenderizer. You do not taste the mustard one single bit after grilling but the flavor you do get is truly amazing. Make sure that you “let your meat rest” when you take it off the grill or anytime you cook meat. I add a sprinkle of parsley, just for freshness. Just give it a solid 5 minutes and those juices get sucked back into the meat. Don’t ever put your meat on a cardboard paper plate as those just absorb all your juices. Use an actual plate or the coated stock paper plates. GET CREATIVE WITH GRILL BUNDLES! Anything you can cook on top of your stove, you can put in a grill bundle; Just use the high-quality heavy aluminum foil. Place on low heat on grill and let go long and slow. Gives you time for a few beers. Brown Rice, Shrimp & Snap Peas and a pat of butter Sear your Kielbasa off quick, slice in 1 inch piecesthen place in a bundle of sliced thin onions & peppers, thin sliced potatoes & a pat of butter Take Frozen X-Large Shrimp from any major grocery store and the quartered size of frozen corn on cob pieces, double up alum. foil, making a bowl shape with high siders, THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

add ingredients and sprinkle McCormick’s Caribbean Seasoning, roll up your bundle nice and tight and let it go for about 15 minutes over medium heat. Phenomenal! Grill off Pork Chops really quick on high heat, turn heat down to low. Add your fave veggie; frozen peas or frozen squash. We like to add a can of sliced apples, a couple pinches of cinnamon and a pat of butter. Wrap tight, let it go for 15 mins. over med. heat. Delish! Then we do our veggie off to the side; (be sure and spray your grill with non-stick butter or olive oil befor laying veggies down) big slices of squash; cut lengthwise, big thick slices of onion, long slices of eggplant, whole carrots cut in half and placed flat down, whole ears of corn on the cob still in the husk. Just pull down your husks gently, slather butter all over the ear of corn; salt & pepper and gently push the husks back up in place and grill over low heat. After about 10 minutes, pull down the husks again and let the corn get some good grill marks. Serve with husks back up. Crazy Good! The thing is t0 just think outside of your kitchen. If you can cook it inside, you can get creative and cook it on your grill; even pasta bundles. I am a BIG lover of grilling fruit and then drizzling a sauce, honey or ice cream over top. Grilled fruit is amazing because when it’s caramelized on the grill, it enhances all its’ pure flavors: GRILLED BANANAS: Cut bananas length-wise and on a low grill that’s been sprayed with butter, lay them down, sprinkle with a mixture of brown sugar & cinnamon, flip, remove and drizzle with either melted Hershey’s chocolate sauce or hot melted caramel sauce (both in the ice-cream aisle at any grocery). GRILLED PEACHES: I use whole, fresh peaches, cut down the middle, remove pit, leave on just enough to get grill marks, sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar mix, remove, drizzle with heated marshmallow sauce. GRILLED PINEAPPLE: Cut the pre-cut ones’ from your Deli in the tall plastic container. These are big, thick-cut pieces. Sprinkle w/ cinnamon & sugar mix; get good grill marks, remove and add a couple small scoops of quality Vanilla Bean ice-cream. JUST GET CREATIVE & HAVE FUN! LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE...& APPRECIATE FOOD.

READER’S RIDE

Bike Owner: Kevin Martin @ Atlantic Auto Repair, Millville DE Bike Builder: Rob Bochanski The bike started with a 1985 Ironhead Sportster engine. I wanted to build a board tracker inspired bike with a low hot rod type feel. obviously there are no production frames available to accomplish what I saw in my head so I decided to build the frame. I’ve always like the drop seat look so I decided to try to incorporate that into the design. I designed my own frame jig and started on the frame. I used a 45 degree rake angle, and stretched the rear of the bike 5 inches from what a stock Sportster would have been. I had to find a alternative location for my oil tank since the drop seat wouldn’t allow a tank under it. I didn’t want to run a tank on the side of the bike because I didn’t want to upset the flow of the bike. I ended up splitting a old Sportster king tank and welding in a oil tank to have both fuel and oil in one location. I used a DNA 4” under springer front end 21” spool wheel. the wheel is a 21x3.5 with a 130 Avon tire. I used a rear brake/sprocket combo to keep the minimal theme going. the handlebars are modified Sportster bars with a Midwest internal throttle. The 1000cc engine has a S&S super E on it, with Dyna ignition.

“Hooligan”

H

ello, I’m Adam Karns and I along with my right hand man and voice of reason John Dunning built this motorcycle we call “ Hooligan” ( more on the name later ) from our small shop in Delmar MD that we call Karns Kustoms. ( it’s Okay we haven’t heard of you either). Karns Kustoms is a partnership of family and friends which brings together one of a kind creations for the love of building show quality Kustom vehicles. Karns Kustoms started in 2003 as a one man custom motorcycle shop. Now we build our kustoms with a recognizable style and flair with the intention that every creation is a show piece. Our shop is just like the rest of you, an over crowded garage with just the basics tools such as, Tig and Mig welders, band saw and one of my favorite tools an English wheel with the rest being hand tools. No $100,000 CNC machine or 10,000 square foot shop here.

Specs

One thing we pride ourselves on is the fact we do most of the work in house. From the fabrication, engine work, metal working, body work, paint, etc. we try to do as much as possible in house and if we can’t we have great partners that help us out such as custom seats, pinstriping etc. But this story is not about me or our shop but about the love of motorcycles and the will and ambition to turn a dream into a reality namely the bike you see here. This bike started out as a stock 1974 XLCH Harley Davidson that I purchased some time back. I rode the bike in the semi stock configuration till one day I had a Hammer in hand hard tail sitting around the shop. This hard tail was set up for drum rear brake. Since I wanted this bike to be like a modern day street rod and have that cool old school look but with modern components such as disk / sprotor brake and fat spoke wheels. To make this look work we had to heavily modification the hard tail to fit the brake sprotor caliper into the frame. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

From there we cut off anything from the frame that wasn’t needed and painstakingly molded the 40 year old frame to what it is today. If you have seen any of our other bikes you know we spend a large amount of our time on fit and finish as well as hiding as many cables and wires as possible. This build was no exception. Since this is a kick only bike we used a 4 cell lithium battery. Using this battery saved us a huge amount of space that a conventional battery would take up and made hiding things easier. We then moved on to the fender and gas tank. The rear fender is a Led Sled Mohawk fender, I liked the ridge and wanted to duplicate on the gas tank. I took a Cleveland Cycleworks gas tank and heavily modified it and added a raised filler stem, hand cut crown gas cap and added a ridge to the gas tank to match it with the rear fender.

Moving on to the handlebars, I wanted a set of ape hangers but really tight together. Since I do not have a tube bender I had Front Street Cycle bend me up a set of handlebars to my specifications. You either love them or hate them but to me they fit the part. The conventional front hydraulic brake now controls the rear braking duties. We had to have a matching hydraulic clutch to balance out the bars so it was off to the drawling board on how to accomplish this. In the end we had to have a slave unit machined so that we could use the hydraulic clutch control on the 40 year old transmission. With all this work being done you know we had to run an internal throttle to keep it super clean. Up next was the engine. We completely rebuilt the top end 34

on this 40 year old engine , split the rocker boxes and fully detailed and painted the engine, hell we even had our boy Jason Wharton hand strip each fin on the engine to mimic a modern day HD engine. So you ask, how did the bike get it’s name Hooligan? Sitting around the shop one night and looking at what we created the name just came to me. It has that vibe of being a gangsta but yet it can be a real bully when it comes to starting this kick only gorilla. Once I heard the song “Hooligan” by Big B I knew this bike had to be called Hooligan. To see more of our other builds like us on facebook @ karnskustoms or check out our website at karnskustoms.com.

America’s 9/11 Ride, the 13th Anniversary Friday August 15th This is the 14th annual fully police escorted commemorative motorcycle ride to all three of the September 11th crash sites. It is in remembrance of those who served, protected, lost their lives and to the volunteers of that tragic day. Our ride takes place in August, respecting each site and the survivors, allowing them to mourn during September. The ride officially starts on Friday August 15th at 7:00am from Highland Harley-Davidson in Somerset, Pa. and rides through the Flight 93 Memorial (but does not stop). Continuing on to Cumberland, Md. (fuel stop for small tank bikes) and regroup at Rocky Gap State Park (bathroom break). Then we travel to the Outlet Malls in Hagerstown, Md. for lunch and fuel. Then the group rides to the Double Tree (host) hotel in Arlington, Va. Saturday morning we gather at the Pentagon for a 7:00am departure on our way to NY stopping at the Maryland House (fuel), then at Barb’s Harley-Davidson (lunch & fuel) and Applebee’s in Linden, NJ (for closing ceremonies) before completing our journey to New York City. NEWS BYTES

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S “GROW AMERICA ACT” PUSHES HELMET LAWS The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has sent to Congress a $302 billion four-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal, the “Generating Renewal, Opportunity, and Work with Accelerated Mobility, Efficiency, and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America Act” – or GROW AMERICA Act; President Obama’s blueprint for a model transportation bill, which happens to include a push for mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide! Specifically, buried in the Obama Administration’s 350-page proposal, found under “Title IV -- Highway And Motor Vehicle Safety,” in SEC. 4004: Amendment to Motorcyclist Safety Grant Criteria, the GROW AMERICA Act would amend Section 405(f) of title 23, United States Code by inserting the following: “SUPPORT ACTIVITY -- The (Transportation) Secretary or the Secretary’s designee may engage in activities with States and State legislators to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws.” The time to act is NOW! This new highway bill is under immediate consideration as the current two-year “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act” (MAP-21) expires in September, but the Highway Trust Fund -- the main funding source for most state and local transportation projects -- is headed toward insolvency and is expected to run out of money as early as July. So contact your Congressional representatives today, and protect your rights fortomorrow! LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL WOULD PREVENT YOUR MOTORCYCLE FROM TESTIFYING AGAINST YOU Data collected from so-called “Black Box” devices can be used against you in a court of law, and most people don’t even realize it. That’s why U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is proposing to amend the language of the Driver Privacy Act to protect all information recorded by event data recorders installed on all “motor vehicles”, including motorcycles. The way S. 1925 is currently written grants privacy only for data the government “requires” to be collected. Currently the government does not require “black boxes” on motorcycles, only passenger vehicles, trucks and buses. But some current motorcycle models are equipped with the recording devices. A similar bill in the House (H.R. 2414) is worded that “any data recorded on any event data recorder in an automobile or motorcycle shall be considered the property of the owner of the automobile or motorcycle.” Under current law, insurance companies, law enforcement and auto rental agencies can access the data on the device and can use it as evidence against the driver/owner in legal proceedings. Data recorders collect a wide range of information on crashes, including whether the brakes were applied, the speed at the time of impact, the steering angle, and whether seat belt circuits were shown as “Buckled” or “Unbuckled” at the time of the crash. 52

Fourteen states have statutes that restrict access to the event data recorder or limit the use of recovered EDR information. GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION NOTES REDUCED MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association projects that the number of motorcyclist fatalities fell by 7% last year, the second decline in five years, despite an increase in motorcycle sales in 2013. The report, “Spotlight on Highway Safety,” based its findings on motorcyclist fatality counts reported to the GHSA by all 50 states and the District of Columbia for the first nine months of 2013, and indicated that motorcycle fatalities are projected up in 13 states, down in 35 states and D.C., and to remain the same in two states compared with the first nine months of 2012. Noting bad weather the first six months of 2013, the association projects that the number of motorcyclists killed last year will total 4,610, down from 4,957 in 2012 and nearly identical to the 2011 figure of 4,612. Meanwhile, new motorcycle sales ended the year with a 1.4% overall increase, up from 452,386 total units in 2012 to 458,972 last year, bringing total U.S. motorcycle registrations to a record 9 million nationwide. The Governors association also noted that the use of helmets dropped to 60% in 2012 down from 66% in 2011, citing that only 19 states now require helmets for all riders. GAS PRICES RELATE TO FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS Researchers have found a strong relationship between gasoline prices and motorcycle fatalities: As gas prices rise, so do the number of fatalities, and falling gas prices tend to be mirrored by reduced numbers of motorcycle deaths. An analysis by the National Safety Council showed a strong correlation between gasoline prices and motorcycle fatalities, charting the trend since 1976. Safety experts speculate that higher gas prices encourage people to use fuel-efficient motorcycles instead of cars. With new unit sales increasing when gas prices go up, there are more people riding and potentially more inexperienced riders on the road.

NEW MICHIGAN LAW LIMITS TEMPORARY MOTORCYCLE PERMITS Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation that encourages motorcycle operators to apply for a full operating endorsement by limiting their ability to obtain temporary training permits. The move is aimed at improving motorcycle safety standards in the state. Sponsored by Representative Bradford Jacobsen (R-Oxford), House Bill 4781 allows a motorcyclist to apply for a temporary instruction permit (TIP) only twice during a 10-year period, starting next January. Previously, there was no limit to the number of times a person could be granted a temporary permit, so many operators would apply every riding season as an alternative to obtaining their full cycle endorsement, taking advantage of the loophole in the law to avoid taking required testing or training. “This bill will help prevent abuse of the current motorcycle permitting process, ultimately ensuring more motorcyclists are trained to operate their vehicles in the safest manner possible,” the governor said.

NEWS BYTES NEW HAMPSHIRE SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS ANTIPOLICE LICENSE PLATE The high court in the “Live Free or Die” state has ruled in favor of free speech on a personalized license plate that reads; “COPSLIE”. David Montenegro forced the issue by suing the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when it refused to accept his request filed four years ago for the personalized plate. “A reasonable person would find COPSLIE offensive to good taste,” a May 12, 2010 DMV ruling explained. Montenegro filed for reconsideration and received the same response, so in August that year he decided to apply, in order, for COPSLIE, GR8GOVT, LUVGOVT, GOVTSUX, SEALPAC and GOVTLAZ. The pro-government license plate, GR8GOVT, was immediately approved. He used the approval of one message over another as evidence that his state and federal constitutional right to free speech was being trampled. The state supreme court framed the question as an issue of private speech, the plate’s message, on governmentowned property, the license plate itself. The justices agreed with Montenegro that the regulation cited by the DMV was unconstitutionally vague because it was left up to the whim of employees to decide what messages were acceptable. BIG-TIME NCOM CONVENTION IN BIG-D Everything’s bigger in Texas, and the Lone Star state recently hosted one of the largest gatherings of bikers’ rights activists in the world as concerned riders from across the country attended the National Coalition of Motorcyclists annual NCOM Convention in Dallas. This yearly “coming together” of various segments of motorcycling, from M/ Cs to MROs and from Christian clubs to sportbike riders, was hosted by the Texas Confederation of Clubs and welcomed all motorcyclists to attend various meetings and seminars on legal and legislative issues affecting today’s motorcyclists. For nearly three decades, over Mother’s Day weekend the NCOM Convention has provided a platform for diverse factions of the motorcycle community to come together in unity and cooperation in pursuit of shared interests for the betterment of biking. Topics included Biker Anti-Discrimination and Profiling Legislation; Protecting Your Patch; the Legality of MotorcycleOnly Checkpoints; Know Your Rights during a Police Encounter; Freedom of the Road and Use of the Courts; as well as seminars on the Use of Social Media, Incorporate Or Not, the Art of Grant Writing, and featuring the Golden Hour - How to Save a Biker’s Life by EMT Instructor Slider Gilmore. Special Meetings were on the agenda in support of NCOM’s many outreach programs for Women In Motorcycling; Clean and THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

Sober Roundtable; National Sport Bike Association (NSBA); and Christian Unity Conference, in addition to the Confederation of Clubs General Patch Holders Meeting. “It wasn’t our biggest Convention ever, but I’m thrilled with the progress made here this weekend and proud to see the unity behind the SAVE THE PATCH effort to support the Mongols Motorcycle Club in their court battle to prevent authorities from seizing their club colors…which would endanger every clubs’ rights to wear a patch,” said NCOM Founder Richard M. Lester. Next year’s 30th Annual NCOM Convention will be held May 7-10, 2015 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center in Denver, Colorado. For further information, contact NCOM at (800) ONA-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. SAVE THE PATCH “Bikers from around the nation are joining forces to support the Mongols Motorcycle Club to combat a lawsuit by federal authorities to take control of the Mongols trademarked logo,” states a National CALL TO ACTION issued recently by the US Defenders National Office. “They are trying to destroy the right of men to associate and indicate their association” said Joe Yanny, an attorney representing the Mongols. In addition to being a violation of club members’ freedom of speech rights, Yanny said, “more importantly, it’s a due process issue.” If the Feds win this case and set a new precedent then no trademarked logo will be safe from being taken away. In announcing that Texas clubs are “rallying for the Mongols and their legal representation,” the CTA asks others to “join the fight to support the Mongols Nation with its trademark battle with the Feds” by educating yourself on this case by going to: http://usdefender.net/cta-tdf.html and go “LIKE” the National US Defenders Facebook page for future updates. To donate to the Mongols Nation Lawsuit Defense Fund (“100% or every red cent goes directly to the Trademark Fund”) send donations to: Joseph Yanny, Law Office of Yanny and Smith, 1801 Century Park East Suite 2400, Los Angeles, CA 90067. “We have no other fight as important as this fight to help the Mongols MC Nation win this case, the US Defenders will do all we can to assist them in every State,” US Defenders National Office. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “They’ve (bikers) got the same rights as anybody. The day it becomes a crime to ride a motorbike down the street, by God that’ll be a sad day for all of us.” Capt Bingham addressing his police officers in the 1968 movie “Angels From Hell”

I

am often asked about “The Rules” when citizens have been invited to an MC Club Party, or perhaps an MC Club Ride. People want to know things like where to ride in the pack, or ground rules for being invited to a clubhouse, etc. I always tell them that they need to ask if they don’t know or understand something. I’d say in most cases they must have been invited by a member or a trusted associate to even be allowed to show up in the first place, so just ask them in private if you have a question. Most things they will answer, some things they won’t. Specific Clubs have specific rules, and I know many of them. It would irresponsible for me to speak directly about any specific club, but there are general guidelines that would be best if followed, regardless if you know that the club you’ve been invited to follows them or not. Many citizens are thrilled with the opportunity to attend a Clubhouse party, but with it also comes with a bit of apprehension. “What if I say the wrong thing”.. What if I piss someone off”.. etc. Well, those are valid concerns. Nobody wants to take something that they find enjoyable and ruin it for themselves or anyone else. I think that most of the general guidelines are pretty much common sense, which it shouldn’t surprise you that there seems to a large deficit of it. Don’t get drunk and act stupid is a great place to start. Hey look, we all like to party, and yes all of us from time to time have been known to partake in a little too much party cheer now and again. A Clubhouse isn’t that place. There’s a sign that you will see often hanging in Clubhouses, “This Is Not The Place to Discover That You Can’t Hold Your Liquor”. So if you know that when you drink Whiskey you have been known to take off your pants and dance around a fire (specifically Men), it would probably be a good night to maybe just have a couple of cold beers. Same goes when riding with us. I’m not having some drunken guest in my pack to wreck us all. Check your Attitude at the Door. We throw parties to have a good time, which means we don’t want to deal with your Dumb A$$ wanting to start $h!& with another invited guest, men or women. You will typically find out real quick who is in charge, and it’s not you or the other guest I promise. Another issue is BYOB and/or Food. Unless you’re going to bring enough for everyone (potluck), this isn’t a concert or a picnic, don’t bring it to a Clubhouse. Keep your opinions to yourself. There’s a saying I like to use, “If I want your opinion, I will give it to you”. That goes for your Ole Lady too. I won’t come to your house and tell you how things could be better, and I expect the same in my house, as do my Brothers. If you are invited to a Club Sponsored ride I’ve discovered that it really depends on each club where you are in the pack. There’s a THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

difference between a “Club Sponsored Ride”, and being invited to “Ride with the Club”. A Club Sponsored Ride might be a Poker Run or Fund Raiser for a fallen friend, member, or perhaps an annual Toy Run. These typically are open to a wider band of citizens or friends of the club, and it’s pretty well understood that with it comes some “Loose Riding”, whereas maybe the pack isn’t always going to be situated as it would be if you were just riding with the club only. From what I’ve seen, most of the time on these, the club members will ride up front, and everyone else will follow. Depending on how large the event, it may even be broken into a few packs. Now a “Ride with the Club” is typically where the rules can change, and are often different depending on each club. Just know even as a citizen you will be expected to be a confident, well trained rider. We lane split it pairs of two’s in most cases. If you are not confident in your ability or comfort level, then I’d suggest you not participate until you are. To be invited to ride with a Club can be and exhilarating experience for those that have not done it. I can tell you that in my experience at the front the pack it can also be a real pain in the a$$ if I have one fool screwing up my pack. You probably won’t be invited back. Some clubs incorporate their supporters or citizen riders within their pack, and some put them at the back of their pack and don’t give a damn if they keep up or not. It’s always best to ask your contact when heading out so you follow their specific protocol. Most of us don’t use turn Signals, we use hand signals. Why? Because it just takes one knucklehead riding in the pack with his damn blinker on to get the entire pack pulled over, which really pisses off the Club. Don’t be that Guy! We change lanes in a specific manner, learn it. We do it for safety and uniformity. This isn’t an all inclusive list, but some general guidelines. There are more. I could tell you, but where would be the fun in that? Trust me, if you screw up, someone will usually let you know. It’s really about observation. See what others are doing and follow suit. Always remember, “It’s our world and you’re a guest here, so act appropriately”. Enjoy yourself and take it all in if invited to a Club Event. It’s Modern History, and can be a Blast. Have Fun and Always follow Club Etiquette. Have a great summer, and I hope to see you in the wind! Tabasco Tabasco.TRO@Gmail.com –
