O

nce again another month has gone by. As we all get ready to take another ride throughout the next month or so please keep just a few things in mind. Leaves falling make the road like an ice rink for motorcycles so slow down in the long curves thru the back roads, and look twice for those deer running in terror from the hunter chasing them down. We want to be able to enjoy next year’s riding season with everyone. That being said November is a month all about Giving Thanks. So Give Thanks to a Veteran next time you see them, or give thanks to your Brother for helping you pick up your bike that night you tried to leave the bar and couldn’t even mount up, which is a good thing because no one should ever drink and ride. You all know who I’m talking about. The staff hear would also like to thank you our readers for continuing to make us the #1 Free Motorcycle publication in the area. At the same time we need everyone to understand this over anything else. This would not be possible without our partners in the magazine. You know the ones. All the advertisers that allow us to bring you this each month. So if you thank no one else be sure to stop in and Thank them. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Big City

O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD

Sometimes, worship and thanksgiving can be a sacrifice. That may be because we are down, depressed, or things are not comfortable for us. Perhaps hardship or tragedy has struck our lives in some way and we do not want to thank God. Yet, the Bible urges us to give thanks to the Lord. Psalm 106:1 says, “Praise the Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” We are also told in Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” And Hebrews 13:15 says, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” We are not told to give thanks to the Lord because we feel good. We are to give thanks to the Lord because He is good.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His loving-kindness lasts forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods, for His loving-kindness lasts forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for His loving-kindness lasts forever. Psalm 136:1-3 This Psalm joins with scores of other verses, throughout the Scripture, in a call for God’s people to give Him thanks. “O give thanks unto the LORD.” What could be more important for our character and more helpful for our disposition than developing an attitude of gratitude? On the other hand, something that is sure to bring discouragement and dissatisfaction to life is the absence of thanksgiving. Unthankful people are unhappy people. We have so many reasons to give thanks to the Lord. The psalmist tells us to give thanks to God because “he is good.” It is so true. God is good and He has been so good to us. Goodness is part of His nature. Goodness is not just what God does, it is the essence of His being. He does good because He is good. The best thing that has ever happened to us is to know God. Isn’t the devil such a liar? Satan wants us to think that God will take away our freedom and happiness, but God actually sets us free and fills us with joy. The devil promises us a good time, but he leads us in a path that is filled with heartache and ruin. He steals and kills and destroys. But God has brought life and purpose to our meaningless existence. He gave us forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life in glory, when we were completely undeserving. He heals the broken-hearted and befriends the lonely. He speaks peace to our world of confusion and gives acceptance to the outcast. When we were without hope, Jesus filled our lives with direction. God gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, as a perfect sacrifice for our sins through His death on the cross. He provided for us His infallible Word that reveals His will for our lives. God is good, and we ought to thank Him for His goodness. He has been gracious and merciful, and “his mercy endureth for ever.” We will everlastingly be the recipients of God’s good mercy. Thank God for it. When we think of the responsibility of giving thanks, we should remember the benefits of being grateful. It is good for us to give thanks. This is why we teach our children to express thanks to God and others. It is unwise and unhealthy to be a complainer or to be ungrateful. Take a look around you. Evidence abounds as to the goodness of God; and therefore, we have abundant reasons to give Him thanks THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

As we approach God to ask for new blessings, we should never forget to offer thanks for the blessings He has already given. We must be just as quick in returning thanks as we are in requesting help; but many times, we are not. We are quick to ask for help, but we are slow in giving thanks. Sometimes, giving thanks can be difficult, because we feel like we have been dealt a bad hand in life or things have happened to us that we do not fully understand. But here is something we need to remember: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). This verse does not say to give thanks in some things, or in what you believe are good things; it says to give thanks in all things. Now, it is easy for me to give thanks when something wonderful happens to me. However, when something bad takes place, I think, “I won’t give thanks for that.” I don’t know that we will ever fully comprehend what was good or bad in our lives until much later. I would even suggest that what you think is a bad thing today might in turn be a good thing for tomorrow or down the road. And what you have thought of as a good thing may, in time, turn out to be a bad thing. I believe that when you look back years from now, you will be able to say that the Lord knew what He was doing. HAPPY THANKSGIVING Thank you Thunder Roads for all you do in our communities and also for this opportunity to share Gods Word with the readers of this great publication. God bless all you do. Two bikers; Buster and Bodie rode into a gas station in Kentucky for a fill-up because they heard about a contest being offered by the station to patrons who purchased a full tank of gas. When they went inside to pay, the guys asked the attendant about the contest. “If you win, you’re entitled to free sex” said the attendant. “How do we enter?” asked Buster. “Well, I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right, you win free sex.” “OK. I guess 7,” said Bodie. “Sorry, I was thinking of 8,” replied the attendant. The next week, the two buddies go back to the same station to get gas. When they went inside to pay, Buster asked the attendant if the contest was still going on. “Sure,” replied the attendant. “I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10, if you guess right you win free sex.” “2” said Buster. “Sorry, I was thinking of 3,” replied the attendant. “Y’all come back soon and try again.” As they walked back to their bikes, Bodie said to Buster, “You know, I’m beginning to think this contest is rigged.” “No way,” replied Buster. “My wife won three times last week.”

Sippin Shine with Hillbilly and my guest Rob Snyder

T

he great thing about writing this column each month is the people I get to meet and become friends with. I think it’s really cool when I get the chance to meet an up and coming new artist. I didn’t think about meeting anyone or doing an interview when we headed out during Mountainfest to one of my favorite watering holes The Mason Jar. We pulled into the parking lot and I saw a band performing outside and I thought they sound pretty good. I went in to the bar and said Hi to Steve Reese the owner and headed back out to hear the band. I didn’t know how much I was gonna like listening to Rob Snyder. You know I like a band when it’s 90 degrees outside and would rather sweat outside than drink inside in the a/c. There was something about Rob’s music that I really liked. I lit a cigar and kicked back to enjoy the show. I listened and asked if he wanted to sip some shine and talk. He agreed and this is our conversation; HB- Do you ride or have you ridden bikes? RS- I did ride. I had a soft tail deuce. When I moved to Nashville I picked up everything and I had to sell it. I still get the itch every time I see one go by and when I get a big check one day it will be the first thing I buy. That will be my first purchase. HB- Tell me a little about your music for the people that haven’t had the chance to hear you play. RS- I put out an EP about two years ago. That was when I was kind of new to Nashville. I wanted to establish that I was different more on the rock side of country. Nothing against the pop side of country but I wanted to show them I wasn’t there to sing about moonlight and skoal rings, cruising and pickup trucks and stuff. I wanted to sing about what I know I’m poor and I drive a minivan. I want to do a rocking country thing but I want to bring back lyrics and meaning to the songs. Sing about what

12

I know. If I never catch on can’t do anything else for country music I at least want to bring back the songwriting part. HB- Where are you based out of now? RS- I live in Nashville and I write usually on Mon., Tues., Wed., and Thursday. I play shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I’m playing about 160 shows a year and I’m looking to do more. The problem is I’m doing everything myself. I’m my tour manager and I have to book it all by myself so that’s a lot of work. I set up the shows and everything. It’s a lot of work but I’m doing what I want to do work in the music industry. It’s a lot of work but I figure if I work harder than anybody else something good is going to happen for me. I’m not losing hair yet but I’m sure I’m going to be soon but I’m playing music solo and my way. HB- I know your friends with The Davisson Brothers Band and they have that same kind of work ethic. If you work hard now when you finally make it hopefully you won’t have to work as hard as you did on the way up the ladder. RS - Every fan I get is earned and it’s not given from a record label and no one can take it away from me. If it’s only two people at a place I’m playing and they come to hang out and they like me on Facebook it’s two people that I earned and no one else can take that away from me. HB- Can people see you on You Tube? RS- Yes I have one video out called Ammo on You Tube. I’m working building that up and we are on Facebook and Twitter. I just keep trying to get the word out and hope the people will like what they hear and see. You can also find out where I’m playing at www. robsnydermusic.com. I’m also on the app Bands in town. My twitter account is @bigrobsnyder and I’m on there constantly and trying to answer everyone. HB-Where do you see yourself in the future? Where do you want to be?

RS- I have ahold of a couple of big cuts and I hope to see myself doing twice as many shows next year and have twice as many fans and hoping it continues to keep growing. I just wanna get better and better and leave my mark with the songwriting. Just keep pushing and doing more. It’s been a couple of months since I did this interview with Rob and I have had the chance to listen to his more of his music. I have to tell you guys I don’t understand how he doesn’t have a huge following yet. His music is kind of like what would happen if you put Kid Rock, Hank Jr., and Jamey Johnson all in a bottle and shook them up it would sound something like Rob Snyder when they came out. I’m going to have to call Rob soon and get another cd because I’ve worn this one out. If one of you walked out to my bike right now you would find his cd in the player. I’m not kidding when I say I think his music is really good. I hope you get a chance to see him play somewhere soon. Please go see him or visit YouTube and check out his video. You are going to hear a lot about Rob in the near future. I think he’s headed for the big time. That’s about all I have for you this month. You know it’s time for some shine and a Jaxsin Cigar. I always get in the circle and lose the lid and of course I share with my friends. I always save a little for my bro Big Dog. God bless you all. The end of September my husband and I attended The Motorcycle Riders Foundations Meeting of The Minds in Kansas City, MO. This is their national conference which is held every September. This year 34 states were represented. There were breakout sessions which included such topics as a legislative planning session, interacting with the media, teach new drivers to share the road, I don’t want to ride in your funeral procession, biker-tobiker communicating your message clearly to both your members and the riding public and a town hall meeting. A lot of the work was actually done in the hospitality room and in the hallways where we met and discussed what’s happening in our state and what we are doing about it. Interestingly enough, we all seem to be having the same issues. Profiling, motorcycle only checkpoints, helmet issues, awareness issues and right of way issues are just some of them. The greatest thing about these conferences is that reinforcement that we are not alone in fighting our battles. We can brainstorm with each other to plan an agenda on how we will resolve these issues and we can find out from those states that have already fought and won just how they did it. Attending these conferences really does put that fire back in your belly so that you can go another year and successfully fight the fight. It was wonderful to be in the same place with the best freedom fighters in the country. One attendee made a statement that will stick with me forever. He said bikers are always the first ones in and the last ones out. We are the original freedom fighters. The original grassroots lobbyists. We know how to get things done and we aren’t afraid to stand up for what we believe in. If you are a motorcyclist and you are not an MRF or ABATE member you should really take a look at yourself and ask why not. Do you want to stand back and be a welfare biker and have someone else fight your battles for you or do you want to be a proud freedom fighter who stands up THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

for what he believes in? For $1 a week you can belong to both MRF and ABATE. What is your freedom worth? November 23rd will be our annual Legislative Seminar. At this seminar we will be discussing such things as how to lobby and we will be finalizing our 2015 legislative agenda. We will also have guest speakers and legislators attending. Lunch is included. $20/ person. This event will be held at Defender Cycle Works, 26262 Three Notch Rd., Unit 4, and Mechanicsville, MD. For more info you can contact me at 443 8222558. If you want to know what ABATE is doing for you, this is a great event to attend. This event will also be post on our website at abateofmd.org. The next legislative session begins in January. That is just around the corner. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Monday night lobbying in Annapolis will begin in January. Each Monday night ABATE lobbies as we have done for over 30 years. We take our issues to the legislators and make sure they understand our issues and how we would like to address them. It is a lot of work but we are up to the challenge as always. In order for us to know what some of the issues and problems are, we depend on motorcyclists to let us know either by email or by filling our traffic stop and profiling/discrimination forms which are found on our website. When these are sent to us we go over each one and address them on an individual basis. Without these forms we have no way of knowing what the problems are. Please take a few minutes to review and complete them and send them to the state office at 71 Franklin St, Annapolis, MD 21401. As always, ABATE is your only motorcycle rights organization in Maryland. Keep us informed. We are here for you. Michelle Holcomb Executive Director ABATE of Maryland, Inc.

Well, once again the cold weather is creeping in. It seems the perfect weather for riding had just started, and already it’s gone. There is actually a theory about this phenomenon that I would like to share with you.

summers seem to continue forever. Now, as adults, our lives are filled with work and family commitments with the occasional chance to ride, and yet contradictory to our childhood, the years are flying by.

Now, here’s the theory. Time, of course, has not changed. Sixty seconds still equal one minute. Sixty minutes still equal one hour. Twenty four hours still equal one day, and so on. What has changed is our perception of time. When we were twelve years old, one year was only a twelfth of our life. That’s a pretty big slice of our lifetime pie. Same thing when we were twenty. One year was a twentieth of our life. Now that we are in our fifties and sixties, our life slices have gotten a lot thinner theoretically, Our only means of transportation at that time was on foot and we are eating them much more quickly. Sadly, these slices or bicycle. However, whatever options we had, we always will continue to get smaller and smaller as we age. managed to get where we needed to be. It was nice when one of our friends got a license and was allowed to use the So, according to this theory, my advice is to enjoy life as family car. We would all pile in ready for a great night of much as you can, whenever you can. partying with friends. Ride Safely and Enjoy, When we were young, the summers seemed to last forever. We couldn’t wait for the school year to end so we could spend all day hanging out with our friends, either goofing off at the local pool or just messing around at the Mall. I remember leaving the house early and not getting home until late in the evening. It was always guaranteed that every weekend, someone was having a party, and of course we all had to go.

ood Luck to Dealership Principal Lou Gardner, and G.M. Matthew Gardner and the entire team at Glen Burnie Motorsports in their quest to win Star Motorcycles Battle of the Bolts contest. The attention to detail was critical during the build. A flush mount gas cap was custom fitted to the tank to make the air brush work flow. The rear fender was cut, trimmed and re-welded to achieve the proper radius around the Avon Venom 180/70/16 rear tire. A Low & Mean tag relocation kit was installed and LED turn signals were custom mounted to the frame. A turn on the lathe and a custom gauge mounting bezel emerged for the Bolt stock tachometer. The Star Accessories custom spoke wheels also got a bit of treatment done. After unlacing each wheel the spokes were sent out to powder coating and a satin black finish was applied. The front fork for the Bolt also went under the knife, and the front fender tabs were trimmed off to achieve a cleaner and smoother look. After minor modifications to the Star lowering shocks, the proper ride height was achieved giving the bike the desired stance. Make sure you vote for the BOLTOX at http://www. starmotorcycles.com/battleofthebolts/vote Go to Glen Burnie Motorsports and see the bike in person, and tell the guys Thunder Roads MD-DEDC Sent you!

e all here at S.M. City Motorsports all knew this was a long time coming, so we figured to go ahead and pull the trigger! It was time for us to step away from the stripped down hot rod bar hoppers and get with the times and build a big wheel bagger! Since we can’t do anything half ass we went out and purchased a brand new 2015 Harley Davidson Road Glide Special from All American Harley Davidson in Hughesville, MD. We knew this build was going to be a chore since it was a brand new model and that there was going to be very limited aftermarket support at first but we jumped on in anyways. First things first, we had to address the lack of power. We contacted Zippers performance almost immediately upon getting the bike back to the shop. After talking back and forth with them for a bit we concluded on their 107ci big bore kit with their stage IV ported heads to compliment the Woods 777 cams we had picked out. To help it breathe some more we opted for a D&D Boarzilla 2into1 exhaust since we already knew what kind of power they were capable of making. Harley has really come along way with their aftermarket parts styling so we got a little wild in their accessory catalog and blacked this whole motor package out with a lot of their gloss black pieces and the Burst collection parts including the Burst Hi Flow intake kit and gloss black throttle body cover. For tuning we had to go with what we know and that was a DynoJet Power Commander V. We are very familiar with the workings of the DynoJet products and felt very comfortable with using it on this build. It just so happened that upon completion of the engine assembly, that we were actually hosting a Dyno tuning event here at the shop. KMC Powersports was here for the party providing the Dyno trailer. After all the dust settled from our 3 day event it was time to see what our new engine was capable of. After several pulls to dial in the air fuel ratio it was time to put the hammer down and set down a number. With the fine tuning complete we were left with 110.25 hp and 120.34 ft-lbs. So needless to say, we were very happy with this set up. So now that our ‘15 Road Glide has no issue smoking the rear tire at any given moment and hanging the front wheel in the air for considerable distance, it was time to make it look as good as it runs! So long Chrome....

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC -

I

RIDING BITCH

was just sitting here thinking and I don’t know who was “in about a conversation I had the wrong” and messed up to My mom on her bike with with another female rider. start the fight. It really doesn’t my dad on the back!! She rides her own, but matter. sometimes she will ride on As we made our left turn and the back of her boyfriend’s stopped a few more times in bike. She told me she didn’t mind traffic, the man continued to yell and I tried to mentally put myself at his passenger. I heard him tell in that spot…on the back of a her a couple of times to get off his bike?!?! I couldn’t do it…there’s bike (in a not so very nice way), no way! I’d have to be stuck with but it got worse. As traffic started no other choice before I’d climb to move, he took off fast even on the back of a bike. First of all, though the traffic was barely it’s more fun being the one in moving. He took off fast so he control. Not only are you the one could purposely make a hard, in control of your own safety, but abrupt stop. Yes, he was trying you are also in control of the path to knock her off the bike. He did you take. Riding on the back, I guess you still get a thrill from this maneuver more than once, and she held on. She never fell the ride but, I’d think it would get boring after a while. Knowing off, and she never willingly got off the bike, and he became more me, I’d get bored really fast, fall asleep, and eventually just fall agitated each time. off the back of the bike! Now had I been this chic, I would have gladly got off the bike I don’t ride anyone on the back of my bike. I don’t like the and started walking. I would never let anyone speak to me the idea of being in control of someone else’s safety. If I wrecked way he was speaking to me (even if I was the one who messed my bike with someone on the back, I don’t think I’d ever be able up), and there is no way in hell I would be on the back of a bike to forgive myself. I’ve had someone on the back once. About with someone who was trying to throw me off. I think as the five years ago, a friend begged me to let her ride on the back operator, you have the responsibility at that point to pull the because she had never been on a bike before. I told her no bike over and not get back on until you’ve calmed down. Or because I had no experience but she said she trust me and even better, don’t get on the bike with someone you are fighting kept on nagging me until I said yes. I took her on a 20 minute with. As a passenger, you have the responsibility to know how ride, safely, but I hated every second of it. The extra weight was to ride on the back and not piss off the operator! I wanted to yell not something I was used to and every time I stopped, I felt her up to the passenger and tell her to get on the back of bike, and weight fall into me. I didn’t like it, not one bit, and I’ll never do I would have if I had the experience. it again. I guess I don’t understand some people when it comes to There’s something to be said for the people who do ride riding. Motorcycle accidents happen every day. Most of them someone on the back as well as someone who has the guts to are due to cagers not paying attention, and a lot of them are due trust someone with their safety and ride on the back. There are to operator error, so why make it even more dangerous if you rules, though, that both parties have to be conscious of. When I are fighting with your partner? Why in the hell would anyone put was in Ocean City a few months ago for bike fest, my friend and themselves in that position? Suppose she had fallen off, would I were coming out of Hooper’s and the traffic coming in and out he have cared? Would he have taken off on her? What if she of there was very heavy with bikes. As my friend and I pulled up had got off when the bike stopped? Would he have kept going to the red light to wait to take our left turn back towards the city, or yelled at her to get back on? we were behind a bike that had a female rider on the back… Riding is supposed to be fun and enjoyable and stress free. and they were fighting. I think if you are not getting on the bike with that in mind, then I won’t repeat the names that the guy was calling this woman you need to park the damn thing. So for the dudes riding their but let’s just say one of the things he was calling her included women on the back: be nice! To the chic’s riding on the back: the four letter word that most females can’t stand. He was don’t be a nagging bitch and mess up the ride for your man! This screaming and yelling at her and she was just sitting there, not has been a public service announcement for idiots everywhere. yelling back or standing up for herself. NEWS BYTES

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) CITY IN WASHINGTON SETTLES PUBLIC RECORDS LAWSUIT WITH BIKERS The city of Kennewick, Washington has settled with a Tacoma motorcyclist and a group of motorcycle clubs who accused the city of violating the state Public Records Act. The city will pay $45,000 as part of the settlement of two lawsuits and will release some of the disputed records, City Attorney Lisa Beaton recently told the city council. The city has not admitted any wrongdoing in the handling of the records requests filed by Edward Goehring and the Washington Confederation of Clubs (COC). Both separately sued Kennewick after they claim they were improperly denied documents, including photos and videos, that Kennewick police took when they cited motorcyclists in separate incidents. Goehring was one of eight motorcyclists stopped by Kennewick police and Benton County sheriff’s deputies in August 2012 and cited for traffic violations. And in April 2013, authorities stopped some motorcyclists from the Washington Confederation of Clubs and cited them for traffic infractions during a gathering in Kennewick. In both cases, Kennewick police pursued information about outlaw motorcycle gangs, according to Beaton. The city, Goehring and the motorcycle club still disagree about some records. However, they agreed to have a third-party arbitrator review those records to decide which should be withheld or redacted and then released, Beaton told the Tri-City Herald. The $45,000 will come from the city’s risk management fund. Insurance does not cover public record lawsuits, she said. About $12,400 will go to the WA COC, and Goehring will receive the remainder. As part of the agreement, Goehring and the motorcycle clubs will dismiss their lawsuits with prejudice, which means they can’t be filed again, according to city documents. Goehring and the Washington Confederation of Clubs are represented by the same attorney group, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorneys Marty Fox and Mike Meyers. CHIEF OF POLICE CANCELS OCEAN CITY BIKE WEEK“NO COLORS” POLICY A.I.M. Attorney addresses Ocean City’s No Colors Policy... GOOD NEWS (Sept 12, 2014): The Maryland Confederation Of Clubs Attorney Mitchell Greenberg approached the Ocean City Police on Thursday, Sept. 11 to address the “NO COLORS” policy stated on the Chief of Police Bike Week Rules and Regulations page on the OCPD website. The matter was brought to a quick and friendly close including a personal call to Mitch from Chief of Police Ross Buzzuro who assured the Maryland Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney that all Clubs and Colors are welcome in Ocean City. Mitch in turn assured Chief Buzzuro that the leaders of each Club share his hope for a Safe and Incident-Free bike week. The OCPD also assured Mitch that the “No Colors” language will be removed as soon as possible and that Colors are welcome in Ocean City public areas.

NHTSA WAIVES BUY-AMERICAN REQUIREMENT FOR MICHIGAN RIDER TRAINING Because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that American makers don’t offer a small and light enough motorcycle for a Michigan Rider Training Program, the agency has approved their request to waive federal Buy-American rules to allow the state to purchase foreign-made motorcycles for their courses. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning will now use government grant money to buy a fleet of 20 Suzuki training motorcycles, though so-called “Buy America rules” say NHTSA cannot award any funds “unless steel, iron, and manufactured products used in such project are produced in the United States.” However, NHTSA is allowed to waive the rules if they are “inconsistent with the public interest” or such materials and products are not produced in the United States in reasonably available quantities or “the inclusion of domestic material will increase the cost of the overall project contract by more than 25 percent.” Finding that “a cost waiver is appropriate for the twenty training motorcycles because domestically produced motorcycles would increase the cost by more than 25 percent,” NHTSA awarded Michigan grant funds to improve rider training. VIRGINIA COPS SPIED ON MOTORISTS AT POLITICAL RALLIES Documents released by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia confirm that the Virginia State Police used cameras to track motorists attending political events. Automated license plate readers (ALPR) are used by law enforcement agencies throughout the country, ostensibly to fight crime by finding stolen cars. But a March 18, 2009 state police memo also documents the use of the “Help Eliminate Auto Theft” (HEAT) camera to identify attendees at 2008 campaign events for thenDemocratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. It was not until 2012 that the state police chief asked for an official determination of the legality of the license plate reader program, and in a February 13, 2013 ruling, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli blasted the “passive” use of recording the comings and goings of innocent drivers who are not part of an ongoing criminal investigation. “Its future value to any investigation of criminal activity is wholly speculative,” Cuccinelli wrote. “Therefore, with no exemption applicable to it, the collection of license plate reader data in the passive manner does not comport with the Data Act’s strictures and prohibitions, and may not lawfully be done.” TAG, YOU’RE IT In a survey of 2,000 licensed adult men and women across the country, Carinsurance.com found that half or more of America’s drivers would support the use of special license plates to identify certain drivers on the road: - 49.4% support license plates identifying drivers older than 70. - 57.9% support license plates identifying novice drivers. - 59.8% support license plates identifying those convicted of texting while driving. - 69.1% support license plates identifying those convicted of a DUI.

NEWS BYTES ANTI-POLLUTION RULES IN SPANISH CAPITAL FAVOR MOTORCYCLES New anti-pollution regulations in Spain’s capital Madrid exempt motorcycles during restrictive hours. Effective the first day of 2015, no non-resident will be allowed in the center of the city, but these restrictions do not apply to motorcycles, which are free to roam the center of Madrid. Still the exemption is only valid between 7am and 10 pm, but it’s important to note that the mayor of a big city understands that bikes are a solution in the urban clutter and not the problem. BIKERS VS. ISIS: “NETHERLANDS OKAYS BIKER GANGS TO FIGHT ISLAMIC STATE” The Dutch public prosecutor has announced that “motorbike gang members” who have joined Kurds battling the Islamic State group are not necessarily committing any crime. Members of the infamous ‘No Surrender’ motorcycle club are fighting against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq, and public prosecutor spokesman Wim de Bruin told the AFP news service, “Joining a foreign armed force was previously punishable, now it’s no longer forbidden.” Many countries including the Netherlands have been clamping down on their nationals trying to join ISIS jihadists who have taken over swathes of Iraq and Syria. Measures include confiscating would-be jihadists’ passports before travelling and threatening prosecution should they return. “You just can’t join a fight against the Netherlands,” he told AFP after reports emerged that the Dutch bikers were fighting ISIS insurgents alongside Kurdish troops in the Middle East. In November 1965, Ralph “Sonny” Barger of the Hells Angels MC sent a letter to President Lyndon Johnson at the White House offering tactical support for the war effort: “I volunteer a group of loyal Americans for behind-the-line duty in Vietnam. We are available for training and duty immediately.” SNITCH ALERT -- AUSTRALIAN BIKER REWARD SYSTEM DEEMED UNSUCCESSFUL In October 2013, Police Minister in the Australian state of Queensland, Jack Dempsey, announced Queensland’s Crime Stoppers would be allocated $5 million in reward funding for information about criminal gangs or bikers. But so far only $1,150 has been paid out. Dr. Terry Goldsworthy, Bond University Criminologist, said the information being provided has not necessarily helped the crackdown on bikers. “[Crime Stoppers] have received about 1200 pieces of information,” he said. “124 offenders THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

have been arrested in relation to drug and property and weapon matters, but interestingly though, only 22 people can actually be able to have shown to have any links to any criminal organizations - it’d interesting to see how many of those 22 were actually bikers.” Between 2000 and 2010 the Queensland police -- a separate organization from Crime Stoppers -- paid out $900,000 in rewards, and although figures weren’t available for Crime Stoppers, Dr. Goldsworthy said they’d be quite different to QPS figures. He said the reward campaign has not had the outcome the Government anticipated… “This reward system has been highly advertised, and to only have one successful pay out, indicates to me that I don’t think it’s a success.” WEIRD NEWS: HORMEL MOTORCYCLE RUNS ON BACON GREASE Hormel Foods Corp. headed out on the highway with a motorcycle designed to run on bacon grease. The Austin, MN-based company created a new marketing campaign in time for the International Bacon Film Festival in San Diego in late August, and rode the bacon bike from Minnesota to California. America runs on bacon, and so does this bike -- getting about 100 mpg -- and the exhaust smells like bacon! Hormel and marketing firm BBDO Minneapolis sponsored the world’s first motorcycle that runs on organic biodiesel made of refined bacon grease, and a team of 12 travelled with a rider during the trip to document the journey for a film, “Driven By Bacon,” which was shown at the film festival this year. Charlie Smithson of CSE Engineering and Taylor Bamber, Smithson’s work partner, custom designed the motorcycle based on a rare 2011 Track T-800CDI diesel model. Grease is an abundant fuel source, as hotels and restaurants in the United States generate 3 billion gallons of waste cooking oil per year, which could fill tanker trucks parked bumper-to-bumper from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. and back. Hormel representatives say the marketing push is an exciting opportunity to spread the word about Hormel’s Black Label Bacon brand and the pig-powered hog will likely be used as a promotional tool in the future. Once the film is complete, the motorcycle could be displayed at the Spam Museum.
