Independence and Freedom (Galatians 5:1)We have freedom now, because Christ made us free. So stand strong in that freedom. Don’t go back into slavery again.

really free.

They answered, “We are Abraham’s descendants. And we have never been slaves. So why do you say that we will be free?” Jesus said, “The truth is, everyone who sins is a slave—a slave to sin. A slave does not stay with a family forever. But a son belongs to the family forever. So if the Son makes you free, you are

Independent means not having any dependencies. But you can be voluntarily dependent on someone or something and not give up your freedom. In particular, you could change your mind and end that dependency.

For 240 years, America has been blessed as the longest on-going Constitutional Republic in the history of the world. These blessings are not accidental they are blessings of God.

In the context of 1776 colonial America, freedom and independence meant being free and independent from the tyranny of taxation without representation, illegal search and seizure and other nasty imperialistic institutions.

On July 2, 1776, Congress voted to approve a complete separation from England. Two days later, the early draft of the Declaration of Independence was signed. Four days later, members of Congress took the document and read it out loud from the steps of Independence Hall, proclaiming it to the city of Philadelphia, and afterwards they rang the Liberty Bell. The inscription on the top of the bell is Leviticus 25:10, which reads, “Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof.”

Today, there are new forces hindering our freedom and independence: Bills we cannot keep up with. Mountains of debt. Constant streams of emails, texts and homes we can neither afford nor maintain. Cultural expectations we can never seem to meet. (John 8:31-36 )So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC June 12, 2016: I’m just one week away from heading to one of my motorcycle bucket list locations – Tail of the Dragon! I’ve been wanting to do this trip for a while and now it’s finally happening. I’m excited, nervous, scared out of my skull, and did I mention, EXCITED? I think I have everything all set to go. I got my GPS mount on my bike and ready to go, I got mounts on my bike for my cameras, the hotel is booked, and I got a partner in crime to go with me. Although, I’m nervous about him. Dave just started riding two months ago and while he’s making great progress, I’m still worried that he may not be able to pull off Tail of the Dragon. We are towing the bikes so I think we are going to ride the dragon in the cage first before attempting it on the bikes. If I sense any kind of hesitation coming from him about The Dragon, I won’t let him do it. Dave bought my moms bike from her back in April and he’s been practicing almost daily. I haven’t been able to practice with him all the time because of my hectic work schedule, but I ask him every time how he did. Today, I took him on his first big trip. I thought it was time for him to get out of the neighborhood and experience some highway riding and some nice back roads. Where else could we do that other than Gettysburg?! You all know that’s one of my favorite places, so I led him there today. I kept a close eye on him as he cruised behind me. The ride there was flawless. I kept my speeds at the speed limit and he kept up. It wasn’t an easy task since the wind was blowing 20 – 30 mph…even I was struggling with it, but he did great! He didn’t stall, drop the bike, fall behind, or make any sloppy turns. I was impressed! Once we got into Gettysburg, we got some lunch, went to Sachs Covered Bridge (one of my favorite locations) and then we did some back road riding. I had the video rolling for that and I got some great video and photos too! He did well on the curves. He had one little mishap on the way back home but by that point, he had already ridden over 100 flawless miles and even though his mishap scared the bejeezus out of me, I had to remind myself that we’ve all made mistakes as we were just learning. It scared him too so maybe it will not happen again. By the end of the trip, he had done a little over 200 miles on his bike, his ass was sore, and he was exhausted from fighting the wind…but when you roll with me, that’s what happens! Hopefully he will be able to keep up when we start exploring the roads in North Carolina/Tennessee next week! I have to say that it’s kind of an ego boost to be the girl and be a more experienced rider than the guy! Check back next month to read all about how the trip went - if Dave attempted and succeeded at the Tail of the Dragon…if I succeeded at it (I’m nervous but I’m going to do it…my bike parts will NOT be on the Tree of Death…I mean Shame), to read about the other awesome routes we ride on, and to see some of the pictures that I will pull from my videos.

What Has ABATE Done For You Lately? by Steve Strohmier Legislative Representative Emeritus 2016 A bill was passed on its second attempt which addresses Motorcycle Profiling by Law Enforcement. The new law requires training for all Law Enforcement personnel to curtail profiling of motorcyclists. ABATE was the lead lobbying group on this bill in its first introduction and was a strong voice of support in 2016. ABATE was successful in stopping a bill which would have placed age restrictions on motorcycle passengers making it illegal for any child under 10 to be on ANY motorcycle anywhere in Maryland, even on private property Through negotiations with lobbyists for a new type of vehicle known as an “autocycle” ABATE was able to add language to a bill to protect motorcyclists from the negative impacts of statistics of these vehicles and to assure they cannot be used to test for a motorcycle endorsement. 2015 Motorcycle only checkpoints- House Bill 917 sponsored by Delegate Ben Kramer passed the General Assembly was signed into law by Governor Hogan and became effective Oct 1, making motorcycle only checkpoints illegal in Maryland Speeding fines- A bill to double the fines for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40MPH which applied ONLY to motorcycles was withdrawn by the sponsor after several weeks of negotiations by ABATE representatives. 2014 The bill to stop motorcycle only checkpoints, while not passed, gained momentum 2013 Handicapped tags for motorcycles- This successful 2nd attempt at this law permits up to 2 handicapped tags on

motorcycles in addition to one on a car when the rider meets the requirements for handicapped tags. Until this law a person was only allowed one “hard” tag and a placard for the disabled. 2012 1st attempt at having Handicapped tags for motorcycles was held by the Senate Committee chair 2011 Public Parking-House Bill 1282, introduced by former rider Delegate Cheryl Glenn of Baltimore City, passed on the first try. This bill made it illegal for any parking facility that uses or benefits from any type of public funding to deny access to motorcycles. 2010 Auxiliary Lighting Clarification-This bill was required because 1 police officer wrote citations for auxiliary lighting which met the specifications in the original bill because the bill did not specifically state that this lighting could “be used”. 2008 Auxiliary Lighting-This bill, which passed in the first attempt, allowed certain accent lighting on motorcycles to increase nighttime visibility, was well received, and ABATE was commended for bringing the safety aspects of this issue to the General assembly Legal Definition of a motorcycle- this bill officially changed the definition to allow motorcycles with two wheels on the front to accommodate the new style that was developed. 2007 Right of Way Violation Penalties-After several years of trying, and the death of then State Director Marty Schultz by a right of way violator, the bill to increase penalties for right of way violations to $1,000 and 180-day loss of license was passed and enacted. ABATE is constantly working to improve and enhance this bill.

THE HISTORY OF VINCENT MOTORCYCLES BY ANDY TALLONE Classic-British-Motorcycles.com LARGER THAN LIFE Vincent Motorcycles have an aura and a cache to them that vastly outweighs their production numbers. From the end of World War II until Vincent closed its doors in 1955, they produced fewer than 11,000 units total. And yet, their image and reputation among the British motorcycle faithful is larger than life. At classic motorcycle shows they draw crowds. At auction, they often bring six-figure money. In a way, Vincents have taken on a status much like old Ferraris, which were also produced in very low numbers, yet command respect, admiration and high auction prices. Vincent’s premier bike, the Black Shadow, was certainly a beautiful piece of machinery with its gloss black engine, but they were also extremely fast in their day, having earned the title “The World’s Fastest Motorcycle”. VINCENT’S EARLY DAYS The Vincent story begins in World War I, when young British RAF pilot Howard Raymond Davis is shot down and captured by the Germans in 1917. While a POW, he conceived a motorcycle design that he planned to produce after the war. The resulting company, HRD (Davis’ initials) built motorcycles using JAP engines until 1928, when they went broke. Along comes Phil Vincent, flush with cash from the Argentine cattle business. He bought HRD out of receivership for a mere 450 pounds. He renamed the company Vincent-HRD. They started out building motorcycles with engines purchased elsewhere. In 1934, they began producing their own engines. Vincents were always well-designed, well-built and unique. At a time when most bikes used rigid frames, the Vincent used a setup similar in many ways to Harley’s Softail, called the Cantilever Frame. The entire rear section of the bike pivoted on a swing arm with the shocks mounted horizontally under the seat. It looked like a conventional rigid frame at first glance, but offered some much-needed suspension travel. Another unique feature were the two valve guides on each valve, one high and one low with a forked rocker arm in between. It was meant to prolong valve guide life, and it worked. WARTIME BLUES World War II saw Vincent making munitions and marine engines, but not motorcycles. At war’s end, Phil Vincent set about opening up the US market. But Harley-Davidson, H-D for short, objected to Vincent using the HRD name in America, claiming it would create confusion

in the marketplace. So the HRD-part was dropped, and from then on, they were simply called “Vincents”. But their biggest sellers at the time were 500cc singles, the Meteor and the Comet, good for around 26 horsepower and 90 mph top speed. Vincent knew they needed much more power if they wanted to compete in the burgeoning US motorcycle market. How could the low-volume, cash-strapped Vincent come up with a new motorcycle with twice the power? That’s an interesting story.

Presto! From a single to a V-twin. 16 JULY 2016

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

FUNNY STORY... Prior to the War, Phil Irving, Vincent’s chief engineer, was sitting at the drawing board with two tracings of the Vincent 499cc singlecylinder engine. As things got moved around, the top tracing roughly lined up with the bottom one at an angle that made it look like a V-twin. With a little cajoling, he lined it all up and the Vincent V-twin was born. The new 998cc 1936 Series A Rapide made 45 horsepower and was good for 110 mph, stellar at the time. It was produced in low numbers until civilian production was curtailed by World War II in 1939. After the War, it was completely redesigned and the 1946 Series B Rapide was a monster. They put two front brakes on it to counter the added speed. The Series C came out in 1948, with telescopic forks instead of the old girders. But the big news was the addition of a new high-performance version dubbed the Black Shadow, now making 55 hp and topping out at 125 mph, hence the title “The World’s Fastest Production Motorcycle”. Black Shadows are famous for their gloss black engines. Rapide engines were finished in polished alloy.

THIS IS THE BATHING SUIT BIKE TODAY

CRAZY IDEAS THAT FAILED ANYWAY Despite their success on the Salt, Vincent struggled financially. Phil Vincent tried many different, and sometimes crazy things to turn it around. Motorcycles with full-enclosed bodies were an expensive experiment that failed to catch on. Then they tried a trike with a 998cc Rapide V-twin capable of 117 mph. It too bombed in the market. Next they became the importers of NSU mopeds, selling over 20,000 NSU Quickly mopeds in 1954 alone, so good in fact that NSU pulled their contract and began importing them themselves. In 1955 Phil Vincent finally pulled the plug, ending a brilliant career in motorcycle production. He vowed however that Vincent parts would always be available, and in fact they still are today. A testament to the solidity of Vincent the motorcycle, and Vincent the

continued...

THE BATHING SUIT BIKE

THE BATHING SUIT BIKE They weren’t kidding about the “World’s Fastest Motorcycle”-thing. On September 13, 1948, Rolland “Rollie” Free piloted his modified Black Shadow into the history books at the Bonneville Salt Flats. At the time, the 150 mph-barrier seemed unreachable for motorcycles. Rollie tried several times, but never quite touched “The Big 150”. He determined that it was the wind resistance of his clothing that was slowing him down. So he stripped down to a bathing suit, a bathing cap and a pair of borrowed sneakers, he removed the seat and laid prone on the back fender. His 2-way average jumped to 150.313 mph. The picture of him breaking the record is one of the most iconic photos in all of motorcycledom. The record-breaking Black Shadow forever became known as “The Bathing Suit Bike”.

Another bad idea: the fully-enclosed ’55 Black Prince.

LIFE AFTER DEATH The Vincent name and those gorgeous V-twin engines were just too compelling to stay dead. Several custom frame fabricators have built modern motorcycles around the Vincent Black Shadow 998cc V-twin. Fritz Egli was one of the first in 1965. Genuine Egli-Vincents command high prices today, and they are also copied by other builders. Chopper builder Falcon Engineering in SoCal has also built some stunning bikes with Vincent Black Shadow power. We walked back to our bikes, wishing we’d stopped in Grafton to bring something for lunch. There were plenty of picnic tables. Rose and I have stayed recently at some places with balcony views of great scenery. I commented that this place ranked right up there as far as somewhere I’d not only ride to, but would love to stay if there were a hotel with rooms overlooking the falls. As for a day ride, it was well worth the three hours to get there. Who am I kidding? I’m sure many of us have ridden as far for a cup of coffee. We don’t need much of an excuse to go somewhere on a bike. I’ve started off, just following the front tire on several rides. It’s not so much the destination sometimes as the new discoveries and experiences that happen along the way. It’s truly an escape as addictive as any narcotic that ever was. A Wounded Warriors way of paying tribute Throttle Life, Leon L. Brittain

We all have our way of showing love of country and patriotism. Whether it’s removing our hats during the National Anthem, joining our armed forces or proudly displaying our flag in all her Glory. Wounded Warrior Jarrad “Hot Rod” Davenport has taken his love of country to the streets, literally with a custom 2006 Suzuki GSX-R 1000 patriotically crafted with a Captain America theme. This Warrior began his military service in the U.S. Navy at the young age of 17. Throughout his military career he has done more tours than he cares to remember, from Desert Storm to part of the closing forces in Iraq as an Army Soldier and now a member of the Wounded Warriors. Jarrad has been a motorcycle enthusiast for years owning several bikes including his latest, the War Admiral a custom 2013 Kawasaki ZX14 build by Garwood Custom Cycles with a nasty Monster Energy paint scheme complimented with a 330 rear rolling on a C&S single-sided swing-arm. For his GSX-R build, he wanted to create something different that reflected his history and his country. Without singling out any particular branch of the military, he chose Captain America for a broader patriotic feel. This is no ordinary themed paint job as it incorporates a custom “red” specifically for this bike build which features “ice crystals” for a dynamic sparkling look day or night. Adding to the visual stimuli, LEDs as well as a custom built and star-lit seat were added for a light show performance worthy of its own 4th of July attraction. Jarrad very well could’ve stopped at the custom red, white and blue paint or the show-stopping light show. However, that wasn’t enough. To set off his rims featuring a rotating star centerpiece and a 240 rear tire-kit, Jarrad reached out to industry pros C&S Custom/Garwood Custom Cycles for an incredible tubular singlesided swingarm for an open wheel look. In most cases with a single-sided swingarm, the open side typically gets more attention by its intended design. Not so with this build. Both sides are equally as impressive given the swingarms’s ice-crystal laced blue 28 JULY 2016

paint highlighted by several white stars set off by a red, white and blue painted sprocket on the closed swing-arm side. With the general consensus being bigger is better, you may wonder why a 240 rear tire was chosen. One look at the wear of his 240 and it’s obvious he not only rocks with it, he leans HARD with it. “I could’ve gone with a bigger rear tire for even more attention” says Jarrad. “But, I like to ride and nothing beats the functionality and look of a 240” he continued. “I want to thank Garwood Custom Cycles, Jeepers Racing, Ball Z Motorsports, Sport Chrome, Top Speed Plating, and all those that helped to make this vision a reality”

Hot Rod concluded humbly. Given the amount of time, attention, detail and not to mention money, it would be easy to understand if this were strictly a show bike. But where is the fun in that? As a member of one of the oldest bike motorcycle clubs not only on the east coast, but in the country, Philly’s State Burners MC, Hot Rod rocks out on this rolling tribute bike as if it were stolen, meaning he rides it living up to the legacy of the State Burners founding history. Salute to you Wounded Warrior for dedicating your life of service fighting for our Red, White and Blue and creating this amazing tribute bike. Captain America would be proud.

ANTI-PROFILIN

There is a public misconception that profiling is strictly an issue that affects only motorcycle clubs; in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Profiling injustices continue to happen across the country to all types of motorcyclists. “What can I do?” you ask - Stand Up! Say Something! Get Involved! Be Heard! - That’s what you can do! On May 19th, 2016 Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed into law Senate Bill 233. Making Maryland only the second state in America with a law that specifically addresses the motorcycle profiling issue, and they did it overwhelmingly. The bill passed unanimously through both the senate (47-0) and the house (1360), not a single vote against and not a single question was raised in opposition. This law goes into effect October 1st, 2016. Senate Bill 233 states - “MOTORCYCLE PROFILING” MEANS THE ARBITRARY USE OF THE FACT THAT AN INDIVIDUAL RIDES A MOTORCYCLE OR WEARS MOTORCYCLE–RELATED CLOTHING OR PARAPHERNALIA AS A FACTOR IN DECIDING TO STOP, QUESTION, TAKE ENFORCEMENT ACTION, ARREST, OR SEARCH THE INDIVIDUAL. This was the second attempt at getting this bill passed. Last year, in 2015, the bill unanimously passed the senate and even made it over to the house, but time ran out and the 2015 Maryland General Assembly session expired without a vote. This did not deter the motorcycle community. Using the momentum from 2015, the Motorcycle Rights Organization’s (MRO) of Maryland rallied again. This year, the Confederation of Clubs (COC) and the Motorcycle Profiling Project (MPP) with help from ABATE of Maryland, created a strategic plan armed with solid evidence and a grassroots lobbying campaign. Senator Jamie Raskin helped draft the language, Senator Wayne Norman sponsored the bill in the Senate (SB 23), and Delegate Curt Anderson sponsored the bill in the House (HB 785). In addition, the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Vallario, co-sponsored the bill, in total, 18 of the 23 members of the House Judiciary Committee cosponsored this bill. During the House testimony in front of the Judiciary committee, Delegate Curt Anderson testified, “This Bill basically says in addition to not being able to use race as a reason to pull someone over, you can’t use the fact that a person is wearing colors

signifying they belong to a motorcycle club as a reason to pull you over without proper probable cause.” Delegate Anderson also did a little demonstration; He looked around the room, and asked a man dressed in a suit and tie, if he was a Vice President of a plastic restoration company. The man said no. Del. Anderson asked the crowd, if the Vice President of a Plastic Restoration company was in the room? A gentleman walked over with a pony tail, wearing jeans, boots, and a black vest over a t-shirt. HE was the VP of the Plastic Restoration company. He continued this demonstration with an Auto Body technician, an Advertising Executive, and even a Fashion Photographer. All of these trades were represented by another member of the Motorcycle community. To further prove his point, he just asked one side of the room to go down the line and state their occupation – HVAC Technician, Owner of a wholesale embroidery company, Realtor, President of a non-profit organization, Department of Homeland Security, electrician, and so on. His point was that we have as many different professions in the motorcycle community as in any other community. You can’t judge a book by its leather bound cover. Also testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee was Bill “Colt” Kaitz, Co-Founder of Motorcycle Profiling Project and Commander at US Defenders-Maryland. Colt testified about the information he has collected over the years from motorcyclists that have been profiled against: “During the annual Blessing of the bikes, in Southern Maryland, there is a video that shows over 100 motorcycles being pulled over, by multiple agencies, including the Calvert County Sherriff’s and the State Police They pulled entire groups of motorcycles over for no reason other than one minor traffic infraction, yet no arrests were made and no tickets were handed out. This took place over an entire day, and at the end of an automatic weapon.” “Another incident; In Ocean City, Maryland, 22 motorcycles were pulled over by 44 law enforcement units, and held at the end of an automatic weapon for over an hour. Minor traffic violations of helmet infractions and handlebar heights, were the only citations issued. None of which yielded any real tangible law enforcement efforts.” “Another incident, and probably the most common profiling

NG BILL SIGNED stop; Also in Ocean City, Maryland. A gentleman was pulled over by three agencies and four officers for a minor helmet infraction. They held him on the side of the road for over 30 minutes, and the end result was a traffic warning, with multiple questions about his affiliations.” All of these events have taken place in the past 12 months, despite law enforcement statements claiming that profiling is already illegal and does not occur in Maryland. David “Double D” Devereaux, founder of the Motorcycle Profiling Project, and the man responsible for getting the first Anti-Profiling bill in America passed in Washington State, in 2011, and the author of the book “Black Thursday”, was the last to testify. Double D focused on the fiscal impact and liability to the State of Maryland. “The bill itself, has zero fiscal impact and has not impacted law enforcement’s ability to do their job. It does force law enforcement to act on the actions of an individual as opposed to the way a person looks and helps eliminate the massive civil liability exposure of the state.” “Since the law was enacted in 2011 in Washington State, profiling incidents have been reduced by over 90%, and the remaining 10% is being dismissed when challenged in the lower courts.” There is still much work to be done. REACTIONS TO THE BILL –

Bill “Colt” Kaitz, Co-Founder of Motorcycle Profiling Project, Commander at US Defenders Maryland, Life Member of ABATE, Legislative Rep for the Maryland COC – “This couldn’t have gone any better, the past 15 months have been incredible. People took notice when we got the anti-motorcycle only check point bill passed last year, and they saw the movement that was made on the profiling bill last year. I think a lot of people started seeing the proof in the pudding. That we can have an impact. The myth that you can’t fight city hall, is just that, it’s a myth. We got a lot more buy-in from the biker community, once were able to show some efficacy. It was the perfect example of what a collaborative unified effort, combined with the grass roots movement of the Clubs and the Independent community, can do when armed with a concentrated message.” David “Double D” Devereaux, founder of the Motorcycle Profiling Project, and the man responsible for getting the first Anti-Profiling bill in America passed in Washington State, in 2011, and the author of the book “Black Thursday” – “I thought it was phenomenal, I haven’t experienced anything like this since we passed our bill in 2011. The unity among the community, the response amongst the legislators, just the entire day was completely organized, and represented what a grassroots political movement should do to be successful.” “Sal” – President, Unchained Few MC – “I thought today was pure Justice, freedom in general, everything that we should have rights to do, here we are all standing together. It was a large effort, not just getting the bill passed, but educating ourselves to make sure we know what’s going on in the legislation to get it approved.” “Seven” – President, Legion MC – “The room was packed, and everyone was sitting in the gallery, people were looking at us in absolute fear, leaning away from us. But, by the time we left, after presenting our argument to the committee, the lady in the press box started clapping, the same people that were looking at us in fear, were now looking at us with pride in their eyes and nodding their heads up and down, in approval, saying good job, good luck, you guys are awesome. That’s what I remember most about today. That it took all of 20 minutes, to change the perception of a room full of people. We look intimidating, but it’s not a TV show like SOA or Gangland. Even the cops in the room were giving us a head nod, acknowledging that we did a great job.”

How do aftermarket performance exhausts improve my bike’s performance? The relevant approach when you’re talking about an exhaust is to improve your engine’s efficiency. Your engine can be thought of as a pump, moving a precisely metered mixture of air and fuel into itself, and moving burned air and fuel (exhaust) out. Improving that pumping efficiency is the most affordable way to pick up a few extra ponies. An exhaust that flows better will reduce the work the engine, especially when coupled with improvements to the flow of air and fuel on the intake side. WHAT TYPE OF EXHAUST SHOULD I GET? Motorcycle exhaust systems typically come in one of two types: Mufflers-(also called slip-on or bolt-on systems) this type of exhaust retains the factory head pipe (s) and replaces just the muffler. Full system-This type of exhaust replaces everything from the engine block to the back of the bike. Most slip-on systems are typically (not always, but usually) designed to be the only thing that gets changed on your bike. The performance boost is not as great as a full system, but the initial cash outlay is reduced and installation is typically quite simple. Most full systems need fuel management changes to work correctly. This will typically entail a jet kit for a carbureted bike, or a fuel controller for a fuel-injected motorcycle. This type of exhaust system is typically more complex to install than the mufflers-only system, but the reward is a greater power gain, and often a more aesthetically pleasant exhaust system. To correctly select an exhaust pipe, we think several things are important. First, figure out your final goal with the bike. If you just want a little more rumble and a bit more pep, an inexpensive slip-on may be the way to go. If, however, you are planning on future headwork, camshaft changes, or different carbs, a full system will allow you to take complete advantage of all the aftermarket parts and work. Each modification, ideally, will be made with the other modifications in mind. A properly thought-out engine modification plan can make great gains with fairly modest expense. Similarly, ill-chosen parts can often cost lots of money and work poorly together. If you need help determining what parts play well together, get in touch with us! If you are on a budget, but have lofty goals, some exhaust manufacturers offer systems that are “modular.” That is, you can buy a slip-on muffler now and replace the factory headers later, when budget and other modifications dictate, while retaining your slip-on muffler. Not all manufacturers do this, so if you think you might hot-rod your bike down the road, this is a great way to get your feet wet without breaking the bank. What style should I buy? There are many, many exhausts to choose from for Harleys and all kinds of street bikes. Here are some factors you might want to think about. Configuration: Often, a factory four-into-two exhaust (four headers for a four-cylinder engine splitting to two mufflers) will be made aftermarket as a four-into-one system, because the exhaust can be moved almost as quickly through the less restrictive system and the excess weight of the second muffler is eliminated. Some engine types work better with one configuration over another. V-twins, for instance, typically give great torque gains when two-into-one exhausts are used. Some research or a call to our techs at Sunset Cycles is encouraged to help you get an exhaust that will meet your needs. Material: Titanium and carbon fiber are becoming popular due to

our bike probably came with an exhaust system already on it. So why would someone remove a perfectly good stock exhaust system? There’s a bunch of good reasons to replace an exhaust: OE manufacturer had to meet a budget and EPA requirements. They are constricted by emissions regulations and by having a broad base of customers who may all be doing different things with their bikes, leading to an exhaust that may be a compromise. So what are you looking to do? For example, a big, steel, dual exhaust system with an aftermarket titanium unit with a single short muffler can yield 15 pounds or more of shed weight. Depending on your bike, that could be five percent of the total machine! When it comes to handling and performance, dropping weight in the right places can be as good (if not better than) increasing horsepower. Do you want to save money? It’s hard to replace a component that has as big effect on the look, sound, and performance of your bike. Very few aftermarket parts do so much for such a low cost. An exhaust system isn’t necessarily cheap, but it is an excellent value. Do you believe the loud pipes save lives? Depending on what you ride and what type of exhaust you install, you can really change how your bike sounds. A small-displacement metric cruiser typically experiences an auditory change that could be characterized as going from a sewing machine to a fire-breathing monster. Mildly buzzy sportbikes turn into an unstoppable cacophony when “uncorked.” While there are levels of sound available from quite tame to vision-blurring, most motorcyclists will tell you that the “bark” an aftermarket exhaust adds is pleasurable.

their low weight. However, their cost can be prohibitive. Aluminum offers some benefits of weight loss and lower cost. Stainless steel is ever-popular due to cost and durability. Chromed steel is often prized for its beauty and longevity. How fastidiously you maintain your bike’s appearance, and how you want it to look are going to play into your selection of material, as well. SHOULD I RUN DRAG PIPES OR AN OPEN EXHAUST? Maybe. If you’re competing at the drag strip or track, probably. If you’re anywhere else... probably not! Realistically, open or unmuffled pipes make horsepower high in the rev range, where the engine is expelling the highest amount of exhaust. However, because they do not promote good velocity in lower portions of the rev range, they tend to yield worse performance in typical street use. Tuning the bike is very difficult with drag pipes, and almost all open exhausts leave weird “flat spots” in the torque curve where power is delivered erratically, or can even decrease! If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll probably find that wide-open throttle most of the time is not really how you ride on the street. There are a great many federal, state, and local laws in the United States, and typically they mention unmuffled pipes as being problematic. Again, every place is different, but by and large, having at least a muffler is usually the minimum exhaust requirement you’ll need to meet for most vehicle inspections. The fact is that the exhaust manufacturers spend quite a lot of time and money developing an exhaust product that will lend you the most horsepower and torque for your particular motorcycle without being overly obnoxious. Loads of dyno-tuning and testing back up their products. It is pretty rare to achieve a better all-around exhaust for street use than the ones the big players in the exhaust game have developed. HOW LOUD WILL IT BE? Well, that depends on a few things. Nearly every aftermarket exhaust is louder than the factory exhaust. If you purchased an aftermarket Harley exhaust, it will likely be fairly loud. Some of the performance gain depends on not needing to silence the bike. If the exhaust is too loud, some manufacturers offer quieter baffles that you may install to bring the volume of the bike closer to stock. If you purchased an exhaust for a sport bike, there is often a removable baffle in the tip of the muffler that can be removed or installed for similar manipulation of sound levels. Performance is usually unaffected by the presence or lack of these baffles. I heard I need to change my fuel delivery setup, too — true? The answer depends on a lot of things. What kind of bike you have, what kind of exhaust you have, and how you want your bike to behave! As a general rule, most slip-on or “muffler-only” exhaust systems do not require alterations in the fuel delivery, but even a bone-stock factory motorcycle will benefit from fuel management changes. If you are purchasing a full exhaust system, most manufacturers strongly recommend fuel system changes. Effectively, the exhaust helps the engine breathe better, but without adding more fuel to compensate for the greater ease with which the engine gets air, the ratio of fuel to air becomes imbalanced. That is known as a lean condition, which can make the temperature of the engine catastrophically high. Couple this situation with the fact that recent EPA regulations have been causing manufacturers to set bikes up quite lean from the factory, and a plan for poor performance and longevity is afoot! Typically, “richening” the air-fuel mix is done by purchasing a fuel controller for a fuel-injected motorcycle, or jet kits for carbureted bikes. A dyno run and tuning session is often in order, so if you are not an experienced tuner, consider these costs in your performance budget. Before you purchase your exhaust, you might want to consider a few things: Engine modifications work with each other. The sum of carefully selected parts usually leads to greater performance gains than any part Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

offers individually. Modifying your engine is very personal choice. Changing your bike to perform differently than the factory intended is possible and often desirable, but the changes must be made thoughtfully. If you do not want to change your fuel delivery method, you may be best served by a simple slip-on system made by a manufacturer that does not require a fuel system change. HOW DO I KEEP MY PIPES FROM TURNING DIFFERENT COLORS? The honest answer here is that you don’t. All pipes discolor to some degree, due to heating and cooling, the presence of environmental contaminants like tar, oil, and road debris, and the material the exhaust was created from. Stainless pipes, for example, turn gold. There is nothing wrong with this. It is a property of the alloy. Cruiser pipes often “blue,” especially near the heads. “Bluing” is a result of how the bike is running, not a defective finish. Camshaft choice, engine timing, carburetion, and other factors all affect exhaust temperature, the biggest determinant in keeping exhaust the color it was intended to be. These are some of the best ways we to keep exhaust good: Make sure your bike is in a good state of tune. Properly gapped spark plugs and proper jetting go a long way to keeping pipes looking great. Buy double wall pipes. Effectively a pipe within a pipe, the outer visible pipe never achieves the high temperatures the inner pipe does, thus leaving it stain-free. Buy pipes with extensive heat shielding. Some brands of exhaust come with heat shields so voluminous, they appear to be the exhaust pipe. However, since there is a layer of cool ambient air between pipe and shield, the shields never attain the temperatures the inner pipe is subject to. A word about wrapping your pipes with fiberglass tape: Originally seen on the dragstrips to keep exhaust temperatures high to improve exhaust velocities out of the exhaust, pipe wrapping has become popular on the street, due to its unique look. It can and does tend to hold moisture near the metal, thus speeding the oxidation process. Most manufacturers consider wrapping pipes to be “abuse” and typically do not warrant problems stemming from wrapped pipes. Do it at your own risk! If any of these seem like obstacles, don’t be afraid to call us and ask for a recommendation on how to attack your specific bike and pipe combo. Sometimes, an install from a competent shop for a fair price can give you peace of mind, while relieving you of any possible problems from an exhaust job that was tougher to tackle than originally estimated. Once an exhaust shows signs of being mounted, it is not typically returnable. We do not send out exhausts that have previously been installed. Consequently, we cannot take a return of one in such a state. You need to know how an exhaust will work with your bike. An exhaust system is an aftermarket modification. They are usually made for stock motorcycles, so if your rig deviates from stock, the onus of responsibility for determining if two components will “play nicely” together must rest with you. If you have a question or concern, call us. If we don’t know, we’ll find out. Finally, parts often must be reused. Brackets, side stand bumpers, flanges, and clamps are often pieces that need to be pressed into service once again. If yours are missing or damaged, you may need to obtain them from your dealer prior to your exhaust installation. Hopefully, you’re now less baffled about aftermarket exhausts. (Ha! Get it? Baffled? I’ll be here all week.) If you enjoy a little bit of wrench twisting, some bark with your bite, and a little bit of “get-up-and go,” a new exhaust might be the hot ticket for falling in love with your bike all over again! If you’ve got any concerns, questions, or just thoughts for us, we love calls, and we’d love to talk about hot-rodding your bike.

1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE:

I think as one of the founders of Legion MC no one could have ever told me to anticipate certain things. I’d like to say that I would not have been surprised all those years ago if somebody sent a note from the future and said “on April 14th, 2016 your club will be represented at The White House”.... but chances are I would have said something smart and sarcastic about that prediction. Many of us talk about making a difference and doing what is needed to help community, family and friends. We talk about having heart and living by a code so while I am not surprised... I AM always inspired and proud of what we have all accomplished together as a club, a culture and community of likeminded, free thinking people. From going to The State House in Annapolis with the MD COC and fighting for the rights of all bikers in MD to raising money and awareness for Veteran Charities with the help of many of our friends and family we consider ourselves so very lucky to

be given the opportunity to serve and help. All of this happens while embracing our brotherhood and love of motorcycles and MC culture. When done correctly the bonds that form can be lasting and reciprocal. Today is a perfect example of that! One of pictures below shows some of the Brothers of Legion MC waiting in line to go into an event at The White House. That invitation only happened because of those we have helped and the causes we have fought for in the past. Today’s event is a charity for wounded veterans and because of our relationship with The Travis Manion Foundation they made sure that we did not miss the opportunity. This honor does not belong to LMC alone though. If you came to one of the events leading up to our Giving Back 2015 event. If you donated or helped in any way. This recognition also belongs to you and we thank you for your support! The White House....... who would have thought!! -7

* WHAT’S NEW @ THE MARKET? You can now purchase pre-marinated baby-back ribs at your local big chain grocery (yes; Wally World) and they have the perfect seasoning blend, marinated (lots of slurping sauce) and then vacuum packed. Hello! You cook in oven for 2 hours and then throw them on the grill. Totally qualifies for a K.I.S.S. endorsement. And the best part....they come in Kansas City style, Cajun style, North Carolina style, Texas style. We’ve had these like (4) times now and turn out perfect every single time. Ya’ gotta try them!

E-Z MUFFIN TIN EGGS BENEDICT w/E-Z-est HOLLANDAISE SAUCE

Top each w/ an egg and sprinkle w/ salt & pepper. Bake until the eggs are just set; apprx. 15-20 mins. For the Hollandaise Sauce; In a blender, add the yolks, vinegar & cayenne. Pulse a few times to blend. With the blender running, gradually add the melted butter to make a smooth, creamy sauce. If the sauce seems too thick, add a tsp. of warm water to loosen. Be sure and season w/ your salt & pepper. Run a thin knife around the edge of each muffin cup & gently pop out of muffin tin to plate up. Serve piping hot, topped w/ Hollandaise sauce & sprinkled chives. These are so simple and taste amazing. * BACON TIP: Take your pound of bacon and cut it straight down the middle in half. It makes it so much easier to work with and you actually end up being able to fit more into a skillet.

COOL, CREAMY CUCUMBER SALAD

(Patricia Heaton’s recipe from The Chew; slightly revised)

* Perfect side-dish for any grilled meat.

1 Tube of Buttermilk Grands 6 Slices of Applewood Maple Bacon; rough chop 12 Cage Free Eggs; room temperature Nonstick cooking spray Salt & Pepper to Taste HOLLANDAISE SAUCE: 3 Large Egg Yolks 3 tsps. White Vinegar 1-1/2 Pinch of Cayenne Pepper 2 Sticks of Unsalted Real Butter; melted Salt & Pepper to taste 1 Rounded tsp. of Chives Get oven preheated to 350 degrees Spray a 12 cup nonstick muffin tin very generously w/ nonstick spray. Cut each Grand biscuit in half; horizontally, and then press it out thin (use rolling pin or if don’t have one use a glass) until it’s apprx. a 5-6 inch circle. Press each circle firmly in the bottom and going up the sides of each muffin cup. Divide the bacon evenly among all the muffin cups.

4 Ozs. Sour Cream

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

1 Tbl. White Whine Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar 3 Tbls. Dill (dry spice is fine) 1 Cucumber sliced apprx. 1/8 thick, apprx. 2 cups 1/3 Cup of Purple (it’s not red; it’s purple!) onion, sliced very thin and soaked in ice water) Salt & Pepper to taste & refrigerate at least 1 hour. Mix everything together; drain your purple onion and add either in rings or cut straight across to add as halves. I just put mine right on top of my grilled meat and it is so creamy and cold and great contract to hot meat right off the grill (remember to rest meat or the only juicy bite will be the first one).

JULY 4th WATERMELON SUNRISE 2 Cups Seedless Watermelon cut into big chunks 4 ozs. of Rum or Vodka 2 ounces simple syrup (simple syrup is just 1/2 cup sugar & 1/2 cup water mixed well). Add watermelon cubes to blender; puree & strain. In a large glass pitcher add puree, rum or vodka, simple syrup and juice of 1 lime. Stir to combine well. Pour over crushed ice and baby, you’re in Summer Heaven. Slurp!

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) TRUMP STUMPS AT ROLLING THUNDER MOTORCYCLE RUN IN D.C. Throngs of bikers listened on Sunday, May 29, as presumptive Presidential GOP nominee Donald J. Trump delivered remarks to a crowd at the Lincoln Memorial during the 29th annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle run over Memorial Day weekend that is dedicated to accounting for military members taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action (POW/MIA). For the blunt-spoken real estate mogul and television celebrity, who stresses his desire to strengthen the military and improve how veterans are treated, the gathering provided a receptive audience. “Look at all these bikers,” Trump said with admiration. “Do we love the bikers? Yes. We love the bikers.” Wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat and forgoing a necktie, Trump told the crowd of seeing large numbers of bikers at his campaign events. “I said, ‘What are they all doing here?’ and my people would say, ‘They’re here to protect you, Mr. Trump,’” he said. “It’s an amazing thing. And I want to tell you, some of these people are tough,” but added when he shakes their hands, “there is love, and it’s an incredible feeling, and that’s why I wanted to be with you today.” Trump’s supporters include a group called “Bikers for Trump,” which boasts more than 61,000 “likes” on Facebook. “I’m not a huge biker, I have to be honest with you, O.K.?” lamented Trump to the motorcycle gathering, “I always liked Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

11/1/11 5:06 PM the limo better.” Nancy Regg, a spokeswoman for Rolling Thunder, told the New York Times that the group had invited Mr. Trump to appear. The group did not extend an invitation to Hillary Clinton or Senator Bernie Sanders, she said.

AIM/NCOM WEBPAGE UPDATES “To best serve the motorcycle community, it is always our aim to keep our Aid to Injured Motorcyclists / National Coalition of Motorcyclists (AIM/NCOM) webpage at www.onabike.com upto-date, convenient, and useful,” wrote AIM/NCOM Executive Coordinator Sarge in an open letter to the motorcycle community. “To do this, we are in the process of revamping a few pages including providing some important NCOM links to and from other WebPages. We have a list of the NCOM Members at www.onabike.com/national-coalition-ofmotorcyclists/members.htm available, but would like to expand it to include all of our NCOM Member Groups, Confederations of Clubs plus more clubs and associations.” Here’s what you’re asked to do if your MRO / COC / Club / Association is on the NCOM Member Groups list: If you have a link, verify that it is still correct. If not, please provide NCOM with the updated information. If you do not have a link and one is available, please provide us with the appropriate link. If your motorcycle organization is not on the NCOM Members List and would like to be added, please send information and e-mail address to Sarge at ncompms@aol.com. “Finally, the last part of our update is to ask each MRO / COC / Club / Association to put a link to NCOM on their webpage. To this end, please add www.onabike.com. Graphics can be provided at your request, THANK YOU!” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The unity of freedom has never relied on uniformity of opinion.” ~ John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the United States
