Living Water 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10) But we do know, don’t we? We do know who stands before the woman at the well! We do know that he is the gift of God! So why don’t we ask that the Lord Jesus to satisfy our thirst with living water? 11 The woman said, “Sir, where will you get that living water? The well is very deep, and you have nothing to get water with. Are you greater than Jacob our father? (John 4:11) When life is not going well, when our dreams lie shattered at our feet, we long for someone who is bigger than our experience and larger than our hope to come and ransom us from our hopeless situations. “You can’t get me water; you don’t have a rope!” Behind the doubt is an inkling of hope. She’s looking. She’s longing. Hope hasn’t been hidden in desperation so long that it has died. Of course we know who Jesus is and we know the answer to her real question. Yes, the one you talk to is greater than your ancestor Jacob. He doesn’t need a rope. In fact, he doesn’t need a well. You are about to have your flickering hope revived and your parched soul refreshed. Just keep seeking. Just keep asking. Living Water is already starting to flow.

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14) All too frequently, we take the shortcut and miss the destination. Only Jesus can supply the water that our thirsty souls desire. Only he can fill the emptiness and the ache. The amazing promise of Jesus’ gift, his blessing, his refreshment, is that it is lasting. This water that Jesus gives is a spring of water, not a cistern. It is living, not static or stagnant. This water gives life and this life provides more water. The Lord comes to live in us through the Holy Spirit. The Lord fills us with his life through the Holy Spirit. The Lord cleanses and transforms us by his Spirit. The Lord quenches our thirst with the Holy Spirit Jesus gives. 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” (John 4:15) So why don’t you ask that the Lord Jesus to satisfy your thirst with Living Water? Have a Blessed Resurrection Sunday

I

purchased my first Harley in 2008, a brand new 1200 Nightster. I had to wait almost a week before I could take it home. That was one of the longest weeks of my life. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas. When the day finally arrived for me to claim my new purchase, it rained. I paced back and forth between the weather channel and the window to see if there was going to be enough of a break in the weather for me to go. Sure enough, there was an expected two-hour gap in the weather. I called my buddy, and he raced over to drive me to the dealership. Once there, the mechanic went over all the things I needed to know about the bike and its brand new engine. Before he was finished, I could see it was starting to sprinkle again. At this point, nothing was going to keep me from getting my new toy home. I finally strapped on my helmet and followed my buddy back to my house. This wasn’t going to be too bad, I thought to myself. No sooner had I thought that when the skies opened up and it poured. I could barely see my friend’s tail lights now; every drop of rain that hit my face felt like I was being shot repeatedly by a bb gun. I was miserable, yet still excited about riding my first Harley. I finally made it home, parked in my garage, and began drying off my bike, all the while apologizing to my new bike for forcing it to ride in the rain on its first journey. Little did I know then, but this was something that would happen to us many more times. Now I was a man who had everything, well, almost everything. There was still something missing. I needed somewhere to ride. I searched for information about places to visit in Maryland, and came across a brochure titled “Ride with Us”. This offered forty participating Harley dealerships in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. At each of the dealerships visited, you would get a card stamped. The goal was to collect as many stamps as you could, because, the more stamps you had, the higher value your gift certificate would be if your name was drawn. And, if you were able to visit 35 of the 40 dealerships, you had a chance of winning the grand prize, a brand new Harley Davidson. This was just what I was looking for. I sat at my computer and mapped out a full day ride hitting as many dealerships as I could. Once satisfied with my route, I printed up directions from one stop to the next ending with my ride back home. I couldn’t have picked a better morning to start my adventure. It was only 7:00am and already warm and sunny. I hopped on my

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

bike and headed to my first stop, York, Pennsylvania. While there, I decided I would get a T-shirt from every dealership I visited. Regretfully, I didn’t have the time to take a tour of the factory where the Harleys were made. I continued my journey through some of the most scenic places Pennsylvania had to offer. I stood on Reading Railroad until I realized I did not pass go and would not receive $200. I rode along the curvy roads winding up and down the Poconos Mountains, without being on my honeymoon. I rode alongside an Amish gentleman riding his horse-drawn cart, and eventually made my way into New Jersey. In Jersey, I met some of the nicest folks you could meet anywhere. It seemed like all of them were ready to take me in and feed me a home cooked meal. The dealerships where I stopped were nothing more than huge barns. My last stop in New Jersey was in the beach resort town of Wildwood. Here I was able to catch the last Cape May- Lewes Ferry into Delaware. The sun was now starting to set, so I decided to stay in Ocean City for the night and continue my journey the next day. I woke up early the next morning and headed to the Ocean City Harley Dealership. From there, I just headed north through Delaware where I was able to hit three more dealerships. Mike’s Famous Harley in New Castle was one of the more memorable dealerships. This huge complex had more brand new Harleys than I have ever seen in one place. There was also a museum that you could walk through showing some of the first Harleys ever made. When I finally got home I had visited twenty dealerships and purchased twenty T-shirts. I spent the next week working out another ride that would allow me to hit another fifteen dealerships. This ride would take me as far north as New York. However, the weather wasn’t as cooperative as last time. When I made it home from this ride I looked as if I had ridden through a hurricane, which was exactly how I felt, but I had done it. I had collected my thirty five stamps and purchased my thirty five T-shirts. I stuck my stamps in an envelope and mailed them in for the contest. It was several months before I heard anything back from them but the day finally arrived when I received a package in the mail. I excitedly opened it only to discover that I had, in fact, won. I won myself a T-shirt. Ride safe and enjoy, Mike “Smiles” Johnson

A man received the following text from his good friend and neighbor: I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night, when you’re not around. In fact, much more than you do. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t happen again. You have my word. The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her. A few moments later, a second text came in: “Damn auto-correct. I meant wifi, not wife. _______________________________________ It was Easter Sunday morning and the Preacher had already given sermon to the adults in the congregation. 4 GENERATIONS OF INDIAN Okay, obsession maybe a little extreme, but in this case it sure fits the frame.

The first generation started in 1913 when my grandfather, Floyd Franklin Washabaugh (WASHIE), was born. In 1930 he purchased his first Indian, a 1927 Chief. This would be the beginning of 100 years of adventure that our family continues to this day. Washie was from southwest Pennsylvania and was a member of Gene’s Scouts Motorcycle Club sponsored by Gene Townsend’s Indian dealership of New Salem, PA. I was told that Washie purchased no fewer than 13 Indians from Gene during his riding career. Washie was an AMA member and participated in hill climbing, TT races and his favorite dirt flat track racing. Washie’s racing bike was a 1939 Indian Scout which he raced all over the northeast. His venues included Langhorne, Heidelberg, Richmond, Willamsgrove and Cleveland to name a few. Washie raced on the flat tracks from 1946 to 1951. He rolled throttles with some of the best including Ironman Ed Kretz, Bobby Hill and Ray Galf. He was the lucky one in the family, living during the era when the riding and racing was pure and Indians showrooms were full of the year’s new models: 45ci Scouts, 74 and 80ci Chiefs and the Indian 4. Then in 1953 Indian Motorcycle of Springfield Massachusetts closed their factory doors and opened the doors for the next 3 generations of barn fresh Indians for the Washabaugh family. The next generation to catch the Indian fever is my father Allan Washabaugh. Allan returned home in 1960 after a tour in the USAF. He moved to the Washington DC area to take advantage of employment in the area. Washie relocated back here from Gary, Indiana after a decade of midget auto racing and steel mill work. Together they took advantage of the early barn fresh Indians in the area. By 1967 Allan and Washie assembled several Indians from complete finds and basket cases. Allan recalls having to call on Indian dealer Herb Reiber of Washington DC to find a speedo for his 47 barn fresh Chief. Herb Reiber now selling Norton’s, Matchless and Royal Enfield’s, told Allan to take a look upstairs. Allan returned with a new old stock 47 speedo and asked Herb what he owes. Herb replies take it and don’t come back! Now that was the good old days! Today that speedo would cost up to $1,500. On a historical note, Herb Reiber purchased DC an Indian dealership in 1946 from Vernon E. House ‘RED’ DC area Harley Davidson dealer. Washie bought for himself a 1951 80ci Chief and a 1946 Chief along with spare frame and other bits and pieces that would allow him to complete his last two Indians. The 1951 80ci Roadmaster Chief was completed in 1964 and the 1946 74ci Chief in the summer of 1971 back in Grindstone, PA. This is where he lived and retires from the coal mines in 1980. Allan would remain in Maryland with his growing family and his 47 Chief. Then in 1967 he sold his 47 chief to purchase our home in Brandywine. 14

Generation three begins 1963 when I was born. I was able to enjoy those early days riding on those old Indians with my father Allan and through the countryside of southwest PA with my grandfather during those summer vacations from school. I recall sitting with Washie and Gene Townsend in Gene’s Indian dealership looking at those old Indians and listening to their stories of the heydays of their racing youth. Then in 1987 with Washie’s health failing he sold those old Indians never to be seen again. Coincidentally Gene’s Indian of New Salem PA remained open up to the early 90’s. Now raising a family of my own; the fourth generation now living in southern Maryland I had little money or time for motorcycles so in 1999 I sold my 1966 Harley and 1967 Benneli Barracuda 250ci. Then in 2000 my kids and I were bitten by the Indian bug. After 50 years of being out of business the Indian Motorcycle Company of Gilroy California was in production. My brother Bobby jumped first getting a 2000 model with S&S power plant and soft tail frame. It wasn’t until January 2004 that I got my first Indian, a 2003 1643ci Power Plus Roadmaster Chief. After 86,000 mile sand several tours across country it’s still my favorite touring machine. In 2008 my son Stephen and I heard about a 1946 Chief for sale in Leonardtown, MD so Stephen and I decided to take a look. That’s when we met Joe Fuchs an Indian collector since 1963. Stephen and I were amazed over the size of the collection. As we discussed the 1946 chief, Stephen noticed a 1945 chief leaf spring front suspension and forks in the corner. Joe said he had a complete 1945 civilian model Chief he was willing to part with, but the Chief was 100% disassembled. Being a motor head and wanting to know an original Indian inside and out, Stephen and I chose the 1945 chief basket case. So with Joe’s help and original Indian shop manuals, Stephen and I set to work. In 2010 we completed our first classic Indian restoration. After completing the build, Stephen laid claim to the 1945 Chief and sent me scurrying back to Joe’s to find another barn fresh gem and boy did I score! Joe had a 1941 Chief the last old stock leaf spring front suspension in his collection basket case of course. This time there was no holding back, we stroked the motor to 80ci, two tone paint scheme, nickel, chrome and cad plating. Stephen and I rebuilt this 1941 Chief to all factory specifications for that model year. The build took us 14 months.

Today looking back on all that history I feel we came full circle with Indian. Now reflecting back maybe I was the lucky one. I was there in my youth sitting on the gas tanks then later I was on the back of Washie’s & Allan’s chummy seats on their old barn fresh Indians. Then years later I’m riding my Gilroy Indian with my sons Andrew & Stephen sitting behind me smiling and holding on. And now at 50 years old riding side by side with my sons on our own barn fresh Indians.

Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, revealed a fully customized, Indian Chief Classic as part of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show. Conceptualized and designed by Indian Motorcycle’s Industrial Design team,

the “Big Chief Custom” is the first custom Indian Chief created around the 2014 models introduced with great fanfare at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this past August. Spearheaded by the head of Polaris Industries’ Industrial Design team, Greg Brew, a small and dedicated team undertook the task of customizing a stock 2014 Indian Chief Classic. It features an array of Genuine Indian Motorcycle aftermarket accessories along with a custom paint scheme and billet girder front fork. This Big Chief Custom was designed to showcase the possibilities to customize, enhance and personalize the 2014 Indian Chiefs. continued...

One special highlight of the custom build is the billet aluminum girder front end that recalls the early Indian models. Designed, machined and built in-house, the girder fork features machined uprights and cross members with a custom 23-inch front wheel. The custom front valance fender maintains the classic look of the Indian Chief. A custom shock and headlight complete the package. Custom paint was applied in-house by team member Steve Leszinski with a multicolored theme from prior generations of Indian Motorcycles. Another nod to the long history of Indian Motorcycle is the springer style seat. Combined with the modern day single rear shock, the Big Chief Custom promises to be a smooth ride. The “Pinnacle Series” of Indian Motorcycle accessories on the Big Chief includes the Cam Cover, Primary Cover, Chrome Grips custom accessories include War Bonnet Floorboard Pads, a Heel and Beach Bars. I

THE FIRE DOWN BELOW!

f you happen to be a proud owner of a twin cam, mostly the FL models, you have most likely experienced THE BURN!!! That blast of blistering heat that rolls through your nether regions after sitting at a stop light too long or getting stuck in traffic on a toasty summer day. I don’t know about you, but I like my eggs over easy, not fried! Since the twin cams have rolled off the assembly line, they have been running hot. The factory has tried a number of fixes, but no cue as of yet for the feverish twins. Well they did come out with an engine fan that reduced the engine temps a bit, if the mounting brackets and bushings hold together long enough to do the job. Then there is the tried and true oil cooler. The only problem with that is you have to be rolling down the highway to give it enough air flow to do the job. They are just about worthless when you’re just sitting there idling. Here we are yet again doing HD’s R&D work, pro bono! Since the tc88 and their bigger cubic inch brothers have been around, here are some of the things we have done to help reduce the heat. JAGG now manufactures a ten row oil cooler that mounts down by the regulator that pulls a full 150cfm of air and has a built in thermo switch that turns the fan on at about 205*F. This little thing will lighten your wallet by about $380 bucks. JIMS MACHINE has come out with an engine fan that looks like it should have been hanging there when it left the assembly line. The FLOWFORCE is a very well designed product. It reduces engine temps by up to 100*F. A thermo switch kicks on the fan at about 140*F, and it has a manual override switch. It even has an OEM horn mounted inside the unit. It’s available in polished, black or silver. This will lighten your wallet by about $420 for the black or silver and by $480 for the polished. BAKER makes an oil pan that holds an extra quart of oil and is supposed to drop the engine temp by 10*F on an 80*F day. Not much bang for your buck at a whopping $500 dollars! I almost forgot about the saddle shields. These are about the cheapest product on the list. These mount on the frame just above the rear cylinder and right below the front of your seat. They take the heat off of your engine is dissipated and redirected away from the riders legs and are usually made out of polycarbonate and are available in clear and smoke. These will dip into your Daytona Bike Week cash for about $70 dollars. Hope this info will help keep the monkey butt to a minimum! We would really like to hear from you, if you have a tech question you would like us to answer, submit it to www.cycleshackhd.com and we’ll print your question along with our answer in an upcoming issue of THUNDER ROADS! Thanks and remember, keep the shiny side up! Slade Kunkel

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

SO SIMPLE SPAGHETTI CARBONARA 1 Pound of Quality Spaghetti (don’t ever cheap out on primary ingredients) 1 Stick of Real Butter OR Quality Margarine such as “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” 1 Pound of Applewood/Thick Sliced Bacon, Cooked Crisp & Rough Chopped in Medium Size Pieces. If you’re not an authentic bacon lover, you can get away with just half a pound. Not me though. lol 2 Tbs. of Minced Garlic (you can buy a jarful already minced in Deli/Produce area) 4 Large Eggs put out till reaches room temperature 1 Cup of Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese, plus more for garnish topping (I’d tell you that you could use the shaker kind but you really can’t. Just buy a block of it and use your cheese grater or, ask them to grate an entire pound for you at the Deli counter. They’ll gladly do it for you. Salt & Pepper to taste, however..... Salt the water for the Spaghetti heavily as it’s the only time you get to flavor the spaghetti internally. Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a full boil After you’ve cooked up your bacon nice and crisp, (pour off most of the bacon grease into a container if you’re cooking a pound of bacon) saute’ up the minced garlic after cooking up 2nd round of bacon. Use a very large and high skillet as you’re going to be adding the cooked pasta to it. Some people just use their spaghetti pot and add all the ingredients to it as it’s already so high. I do this, but others prefer the all-in-1 skillet method. You’ll find your own groove. In a separate bowl, whisk up the 4 eggs and 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Add a good amount of fresh cracked black pepper. If mix is too tight, loosen it with some of the pasta water. When the minced garlic is just golden (never overcook) add the bacon back in and stir with a wooden spoon to incorporate well together. Remove from heat and stir in the egg & cheese mixture until creamy. Quickly add the drained spaghetti. Add 2 Tbls. of butter or margarine. If need be, add more pasta water to loosen if seems dry. It must be wet, loose & creamy. Fold out onto a large serving pasta platter and garnish with parsley and more Parmesan cheese. Serve with hot, crusty, lemon-butter bread. Delicioso!

OLD SKOOL VINEGAR PIE 2 Cups of Cool Water 1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour 2 Cups Sugar 2 Eggs; beaten & frothy 6 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar 2 tsps. Limoncello (lemon flavored liqueur OR lemon extract (It’s better w/ Limoncello, although in “the day”, lemon extract was always used. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a store bought pie shell. Bake as per directions & cool completely. In heavy 2-qt. saucepan, bring water to a full boil. In small bowl, combine flour and sugar, tossing with a fork to blend. Add the flour mix to boiling water and cook, whisking often, until thickened, about 7 minutes. Remove from heat and slowly add the eggs, whisking vigorously. Return to medium-low heat and cook, whisking until velvety smooth; about 3 minutes. Add the vinegar and Limoncello and whisk just to blend. Pour into the cooled pastry shell and refrigerate until set; 3 hours and never sooner. I think alot of people don’t try this pie because of the name but damn....it is so good with lemon ice-cream. Great...now I’m toally jonsing for it. EASTER LOVIN’ PISTACHIO WHOOPI PIES 1 Box of Cocoa Chocolate Cake Mix (If can’t find, just get regular Milk Chocolate mix and add 1 Cup of Real Cocoa Mix mixed with 1/2 cup sugar) Blend all ingredients as per pkg. directions. Lay out 2 large cookie sheets with baking parchment paper or non-stick mats. Take a small ice-cream or sherbet ball scoop that is approximate to the size of 2 Tablespoons and scoop into balls. Place balls all over both cookie pans. Leave 2-1/2 inches for balls to spread out Take a rubber spatula and just press slightly so that all balls will bake down 1/2 inch thick. Bake 12 mins. so they’re cracked on the surface. Cool 1 min. then transfer to a rack to cool thoroughly. Put Pistachio ice-cream in refrigerator to soften up for about 20 minutes. Scoop 1/2 cup of ice-cream on each Whoopi and cover with another & squish slightly to form a sandwich. Freeze for no less than 2 hours before serving. These Rock!

I

Sippin Shine with Hillbilly And my guest Roger Earl Of Foghat

’m sitting here on the porch with my friend Roger Earl the drummer and founder of Foghat. We pulled up a couple of rockers and started sippin and telling stories. I hit it off with Roger right away. Knowing that Foghat was a British band and Roger was from London I broke the ice. What’s your favorite football team? Now all of you are waiting for the Steelers or Cowboys or something to that effect. I answered for him I said please tell me your not a gunner. He said Hell yes I am. He is an Arsenal fan. Arsenal is a soccer team that plays in North London. I explained that I am a huge Everton fan. I thought he was gonna laugh me off the tour bus. We had a long talk about soccer but I won’t bore you with that part of the talk. Foghat was formed way back in the 70’s and Roger is a founding member and has played the drums for them the whole time. It was great to have a chance to talk with him about the band. HB-Did the band start in London? RE-Yes myself and Lonesome Dave the lead singer left the band Savoy Brown and started Foghat in 1971. The biggest surprise is I am still here today. HB- Do you or any members ride motorcycles?

RE- The last time I rode was in 1976. I was going to buy a Triumph. I already had three cars this is when we had more money than sense actually my wife says if I had a dime I would have more money than sense. I had a buddy that had just finished restoring a Triumph and I had ridden Triumphs before and thought about buying this one but I got a drum kit instead. I called my manager and asked him to give my friend a check for $1200 so I could buy the bike as well. He said are you kidding me? At the time I had a Lamborghini and a new Corvette and another car of some kind. He said no you can’t you have enough and if he hadn’t said no I probably would have gotten hurt and life would have turned out different. That

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

was the last time I rode a bike but I did like that Triumph. Now I’m a ragtop guy. HB-Have the band been to WV before or is this the first time? RE- He sings we’ve been everywhere man we’ve been everywhere.

HB- What do you say to all those people that have been with you guys all these years that come out and stand and sing with you here at all these shows that you still do after all this time? The ones that are standing outside in the rain today and cheer like crazy after all these years? RE-It’s a shame it’s pissing down rain isn’t it? We always try and put on a great show. Sometimes the rain gets us fired up and we find ourselves really getting into it. We appreciate the fans that have meant so much to us through the years. HB- How many shows do you do during the year now? RE- We do 50-60 shows a year now. All over the States and Canada and we are going to Mexico this year as well. HB-So are there any other Arsenal fans on the bus or have they converted you to American football? RE- Most of the band are Steeler fans. I’m a Steeler fan as well. Arsenal will always have my heart though. HB- Where will you be in the summer of 2014? RE- We will be everywhere all over the place. You can check our website foghat.net for tour dates. Be safe on your rides and we look forward to seeing you again soon. I went out in the rain to watch the show and was taken back to when we were all a little younger. Foghat still has a lot to offer in their show. They have always loved to play live and it showed in their concert. It left us all wanting to take a Slow Ride. Remember always share your shine with friends and lose the lid. May God bless and keep you til next month and we take a break from riding and sip a little. Hillbilly

Exceptional Care for children

U

nique. Inspirational. Indispensable. A place for infants and children facing critical medical needs that is safe. A warm environment that feels more like a home than a healthcare facility. These statements all describe Exceptional Care for Children (ECC). ECC strives each and every day to live out its mission which reads “Exceptional Care for Children improves the lives of technology-dependent children and their families through skilled nursing, transitional and palliative care. We are a haven for healing when improvement is possible and a refuge for nurturing when a cure is unattainable.” Opened in February 2006, ECC offers long-term, transitional and end-of-life care to children in a homelike environment. The sub-acute component of our care includes enteral feeds, tracheostomies, ventilator dependency, wound care, skilled therapies and ultimately allows this organization to provide a home to children who are medicallyfragile. These children include those who are dependent upon medical technology for their survival as a result of prematurity, congenital anomalies, traumatic injury or genetic disorders.

the existing second floor of its patient building, expanding the resident capacity from ten to twenty resident rooms. May 2012 marked a second major milestone, as the facility opened the newly renovated third floor. This expansion created an additional eleven bedrooms, further growing ECC’s residential capacity. In addition to adding the necessary space for more children, ECC has worked hard to identify ways to enhance the lives of the children through increased services and opportunities. Today, ECC manages the long term, skilled, palliative and transitional care needs of those ages birth to twenty-one years, requiring skilled nursing in an acute care setting. Beyond providing a home, the organization strives to provide children with the tools they need to achieve success in their lifetime, no matter how brief. The programs include educational services provided in an onsite classroom through a partnership with the local school district, an extensive onsite therapy program featuring Occupational, Physical and Speech therapy components, and an impressive Play therapy program designed to help address developmental and therapeutic goals in a fun-filled environment.

The increased use and complexity of medical technology has presented new challenges in the placement of infants and children facing these needs, and Exceptional Care for Children works hard to become a solution for these children and their families. Referrals for admission continue to increase from hospitals in Delaware and surrounding areas. Since opening our doors in 2006, ECC has cared for 79 children, successfully transitioning 36 of these children to the community, and has provided a peaceful and loving environment for 12 children requiring the services of the award winning palliative care program. Led by a team of highly skilled, talented and passionate individuals, Exceptional Care for Children has achieved significant growth over the last eight years. In 2007, the organization renovated 32

Currently, for the majority of residents, the alternative to Exceptional Care for Children is to remain in area children’s hospitals until a bed becomes available at ECC. This fact drives the organization to push forward, looking for new and innovative ways to enhance the services available to these inspiring children. It is clear that the work is far from done, and ECC remains committed to facing this challenge and taking action to develop solutions for children and families in need of the specialized care and unique environment that only ECC can offer.

Exceptional Care for Children is a nonprofit organization, relying on support from the community to continue in its efforts to be an innovative leader in healthcare for medically-fragile children. Individuals and businesses have the opportunity to change the lives of these children by joining our volunteer and donor community and supporting initiatives underway at ECC. Opportunities to become a donor at ECC extend from a monthly giving pledge in the recurring donor program, to one time gifts, to support of fundraising events and activities. Volunteers can come to ECC weekly for ongoing responsibilities, or come by for a few hours to help ECC prepare for children’s events and programs or complete a project to maintain the facility. Joining this community of caring supporters is a way to show each amazing child at Exceptional Care for Children that you believe in them. Next Spring, Exceptional Care for Children’s will hold its signature fundraising event, the Spring Gala, on April 12, 2014 at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware to advance awareness in our community and further donor opportunities that make a difference in the lives of ECC’s kids. This black-tie benefit features an exciting evening of wonderful music, delicious food and great friends. The event enables ECC, its friends and community partners to celebrate the successes of the organization, staff, donors and children. It also brings our community together to remember the precious lives that have graced the halls of this haven. For information on how you or your business can join the 2014 event as attendees, sponsors or silent auction donors or if you would like to learn more about or visit Exceptional Care for Children, please contact Maureen Langston, Director of Development, at 302-894-1001.

DISNEY: Walt Disney once said, “It’s kind of fun to do the Impossible.” Since opening in 2006, the goal of ECC has always been to provide children who are medically-fragile with the opportunity to be kids despite their medical challenges. In October of 2011, two board members made this dream a reality by choosing to fund a trip to Disney World. This life-changing trip became known as The Magical Journey. Eight children made that first journey and it was nothing short of incredible. Two years later, in October of 2013, that journey happened again. Businesses and individuals came together united in the effort to send nine more children to Florida for the trip of their lifetime and ECC was once again given the opportunity to do the impossible. Thank you to those who supported this effort and allowed Exceptional Care to inspire hope through the lives of some very deserving children. “As previously published in Inside Newark”

Elana’s Story: Not all of the children who call Exceptional Care their home will outlive the staff that delivers their amazing care. Exceptional Care for Children provides a refuge for children whose time left is very limited. Elana was one of these children. At just three-years-old, Elana had seen many hospitals and her family made the decision to bring her to Exceptional Care for Children where she could be cared for by the exceptional palliative care team. Although her time at ECC was brief, the goal was to provide with a peaceful and loving environment where she could be as comfortable as possible up until the day she left us. Her family expressed gratitude in knowing that Elana was cared for so passionately by the staff at Exceptional Care, and in the end, found peace in knowing it was her time to go.

hile Thunder Roads MDDE-DC Road Crew was working Maryland’s Eastern shore, Ocean City and Delaware. They found out that on 3/15/14 St. Patrick’s Day in Ocean City, MD, There would be a huge celebration while talking to the bartender at the 28th Street Pit & Pub and that was there busiest day of the year and many of the seasonal establishment’s open for this event. Next stop on the trip was the Tap House for a meeting with Jeff Burton where he confirmed said rumor and was bustling around getting ready for what he called “droves” of people in green, for the 33rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. From that point forward we heard the same story all over town, De Lazy Lizard, Cork Bar, Bearded Clam, Seacret’s, Dead Freddie’s, Fish Tales, Harborside, Trader Lee’s, JC’s Northside Pub etc. We decided that leaving on Friday was NOT an option… never having been in O.C. to witness this event, and let me say this; the rumor was no exaggeration, people lined the street some standing, some in chairs and tailgaters everywhere as the parade was coming down Coastal Hwy

It has simple categories and free admission to all. Joe Johnson, who is chaplain for the Home and School Association, voiced his idea for getting more community involvement with the Eastern Shore Junior Academy in 2010. He felt that the school should host a truck, motorcycle and car show in early April to start off the season. In 2011, the first show occurred and Joe was there, working the registration table and opening the show. He had a great time and began making plans for the next year. Almost tragically, Joe fell the next day striking his head and triggering a stroke that nearly took his life. Six months of therapy and recovery found Joe a little weaker but still determined to get the show rolling again. West Virginia Pinnacle Creek Trail Off-Road Trip Thursday, April 3, 2014 - Sunday, April 6, 2014 You’re Invited! Come ride with Steve Graybeal, the Diamond Motor Sports Parts Manager! I’ve got a great trip planned for you on the Pinnacle Creek Trail System, part of West Virginia’s greater Hatfield-McCoy Trail System. It’s an awesome place to ride - I’ve been there many times. I’m leaving with a group of 10 to 15, or more, the morning of Thursday April 3rd and returning Sunday, April 6th, which allows several days to explore the trails. It takes 7 hours (about 440 miles) to get to Trails Lodging in Pineville, WV, about 5 miles from the Pinnacle Creek Trail head. I have reserved a house to share lodging expenses, so the more the merrier...and cheaper! For all the great info on the trip, click the pic below or go to blog.rideDMS.com. On that blog site, I put a map, a breakdown of expected expenses, more pictures, a list of items you’ll need, a rough itinerary and more useful links to see what you can expect. Please sign-up early, so I can firm up the plans for a great trip. I’ll have daily rides planned for both the scenery-seeker and the straight-up adventure seeker. It’ll be a family-oriented fun trip for big kids/adults on ATV’s (250cc & up), UTV’s, and even larger trail bikes if you choose. I hope you’ll ride with me! NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

FURTHER EPA ACTIONS RESTRICT E15 FUEL

U.S. SENATE ACTS TO STOP MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to prohibit the use of federal funds in establishing motorcycle-only checkpoints. S.2078, the “Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act,” sponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ron Johnson (RWI), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Wednesday, March 5th, and is similar to H.R. 1861, introduced last year in the U.S. House by Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI). The bill would prohibit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from issuing grants to states to set up checkpoints where motorcycle riders are targeted by police to check that their vehicles meet state standards for noise, tire condition and other requirements, and are also checked for safety gear during the roadside checkpoints. Over the past few years, such roadblocks have been conducted in New York, Georgia, Virginia and Utah during large motorcycle rallies. The senators argue that these types of checkpoints are discriminatory and unnecessary since motorcycle riders are already subject to state registration, inspection, licensing and helmet laws and must stop at sobriety check points like all other drivers. One co-sponsor, Sen. Manchin, former governor of West Virginia, says the checkpoints are a waste of taxpayer funding that can have an adverse effect on states’ economies. “Requiring bikers to drive through motorcycle-only checkpoints is not only an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars, but it also raises legitimate questions about discrimination against motorcyclists. In West Virginia, bikers travel near and far to drive on our winding roads and enjoy the beautiful scenery, which attracts tourism and helps boost both our local and state economies,” Manchin said. “As a Harley owner myself, I am pleased to work with my colleagues on this bipartisan legislation that simply would prohibit yet another senseless and unreasonable federal regulation which could harm states’ economies.” The states of California, Illinois, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Virginia have all passed legislation to bar such checkpoints. CDC TASK FORCE RECOMMENDS HELMET LAWS The Community Preventative Services Task Force, a panel operating under the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has reported its findings for improving motorcycle rider safety, recommending that states and the federal government focus on passing helmet laws. In its first-ever findings statement on motorcycle safety, the group of mostly medical professionals emphasize that motorcyclist fatalities have nearly doubled since 2000, but ignore the fact that motorcycle registrations have likewise multiplied over the same time period. Members of Congress have written the CDC requesting that they back off from helmet propaganda, but the federal health agency feels justified in pursuing all preventable injuries. 58

Following passage of the Farm Bill, which hampers the availability of E15 (gasoline containing 15% ethanol) by restricting blender pumps necessary to dispense the fuel, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent move to reduce for the first time the amount of ethanol required to be blended into U.S. gasoline supplies, two new EPA regulations are expected to further limit E15 availability. In action taken March 3rd, the EPA decided against adopting E15 as its standard test fuel, and in other regulatory action refused to waive E15 vapor pressure limits, which will effectively reduce its distribution to gas stations during summer months. Previously, the EPA approved E15 for use in cars and trucks built since 2001, but has not approved the fuel for use in any motorcycles or ATVs, and manufacturers have warned that E15 can damage engines and even inadvertent fueling can void warranties. PENNSYLVANIA LIMITS MOTORCYCLE LEARNERS PERMITS State Representative Seth Grove introduced HB 892 in this session of the Pennsylvania State Legislature in an effort to curb the practice of “serial permitting” by novice riders in the state, and the bill was just signed by the Governor and becomes effective immediately. The new law restricts the number of times someone can reapply for a motorcycle learners permit to three times in a 5 year period. Prior to this law, there was no restriction on the number of times an individual could reapply for a learners permit and thereby skirting the need to take the full motorcycle license written and riding test. “We have been dealing with individuals who continually violate the restrictions of motorcycle permits because they treat permits like actual licenses,” Grove said. ABATE of Pennsylvania also supported the bill and provides free student motorcycle safety training, with an opportunity to obtain a class “M” license upon completion of the course. FLORIDA LAWMAKERS MAY MAKE DRIVERS WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLISTS Safety rule number one for motorcycle riders is to watch out for car drivers, but a proposal in Florida could make it state law for drivers to watch out for motorcycles. The bill covers what Senator Greg Evers (R-District 2) calls “vulnerable road users.” That includes motorcyclists, pedestrians, road workers, scooter and bicycle riders, farm equipment operators, carriage drivers and those in wheelchairs. If a driver commits a moving violation that results in bodily injury, it would become a second-degree misdemeanor. If it causes death, it would become first-degree, with the potential for license suspension.

ABATE SEEKS TO ALLOW OFF-ROAD VEHICLES ON COUNTY ROADWAYS Indiana state law bans driving off-road vehicles on public streets, but ABATE of Indiana, a motorcycle advocacy group, is asking Tippecanoe County commissioners to exercise a clause that allows county officials to allow all-terrain vehicles, gators and various other off-road machines, including snowmobiles, to use county roads in unincorporated areas. “We’re just requesting that they at least evaluate this; look at what other communities have done with this -- what other counties have done with this” said Jay Jackson, executive director of ABATE of Indiana. “We’re not aware of any significant ramifications as a result, so we don’t see a downside to it.”
