That’s a shock. He didn’t have it all together—he wasn’t perfect—and (best of all) he didn’t attempt to hide it! He admitted to his friends in Corinth that he was weak, fearful, and even trembling when he stood before them. I admire such transparency. Everybody does . . . if it’s the truth. I heard something some time back (so don’t quote me here), It described Paul as being “a man of moderate size with curly hair, crooked legs, big eyeballs, thick eyebrows, a long nose, and thick lips.” Wow! Doesn’t sound like any of the public idols of today. Some even say he had poor eyesight (Galatians 6:11); plus,he had a hunchback! You get the point. He did not hide any of his humanity (see Romans 7 if you still struggle believing he was a cut above human), Paul declared his true condition. He had needs and admitted them. Paul The Apostle didn’t have everything in life wired perfectly . . . and he didn’t hide it. Servants are like that. You can begin to see some of the comforting aspects of having a servant’s heart. Gordon and his family, his wife Debbie, Son Gordon “Gordy” Jr, Christina and Janine first started out in ministry in New Mexico on the Navajo Reservation in January of 1983. Gordon and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1986 and continued their work with the Navajo from there. aryland’s legislative session will begin January 8th. ABATE of Maryland’s first Monday night lobbying begins that following Monday, January 13th. Every Monday night for over 30 years we have lobbied in Annapolis for Maryland Motorcyclists. We address any legislature that is motorcycle related. It is not always the things we get through but the things that we prevent. Those bills that are not passed can be just as important as those bills that are passed. Some of the silly things over the years that didn’t make it through (thank goodness) are: flashing beacons on helmets, reflective vests and prevention of child passengers. We are always vigilant to make sure bills that negatively affect motorcyclists are brought to our attention and negated. This year we had our legislative seminar in November where the Board of Directors discussed and voted on those bills that we will be addressing in the 2014 session. A lot of the items can be handled administratively and will be addressed in the upcoming year. Some examples are: tolls, road conditions, MVA driver’s handbook and riding impaired and unlicensed drivers. We work closely with the SHA, MVA and Maryland State Police to address these items. ABATE also sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists. Here we discuss and work on what we can do to make Maryland a safe environment for motorcyclists. One of the big items this year will be impaired riding. ABATE of Maryland will also make that a priority as well.

We have tried working administratively with the MVA and that has not worked well so we will be choosing different and better avenues in order to make that happen. That is a priority.

Legislatively we will again address the helmet issue since that is a priority for motorcyclists in the state. We will be asking for the introduction of a helmet modification bill the same as last years with a $10,000 insurance requirement. We are looking closely at the bills the other states have passed allowing freedom of choice and using that as our guideline. We are also working on a bill focusing on motorcycle only check points. This has been a problem throughout the country and Maryland needs to be proactive in addressing this problem. If you want to participate in lobbying, we would love to have you. organ donors save lives T

his is the time of year when we all try to renew or improve the things we did last year. Over the last three weeks I have had a rare opportunity to look at some things that most of us are going to experience in our lives and thought I would jot down some notes about LIFE from one Hillbilly’s observations. While most of the time I try and make things a little funnier or lighter, this one takes a turn toward the serious. For the regular reader don’t worry I will go back to normal soon where I live in my own little world and the voices help me.

and said sometimes this happens. He got dressed and we left the hospital. We went to dinner tired and a little depressed. I really felt bad for my brother. He asked me to see to stay a couple of days to see if a new liver became available. We all know what happened next. The next afternoon we got the call that they had found a new liver. Here we go again. Was starting to wonder if this ride ever ends? We got to Vanderbilt about 3 in the afternoon and the surgery took place at 3 a.m. He has come thru the procedure like a CHAMP! It’s amazing to me that he has someone else’s liver that is working in him .During his surgery I prayed for the family that sent such an important gift to us. I got to thinking and putting the last 3 weeks together with both brain cells that are left in my brain and came up with this article.

Over the last 3 weeks I have been riding life’s roller coaster in all its glory. My first grandson was born three weeks ago. I didn’t know life could get that GOOD. He was born 5 weeks premature and had to spend about a week in the hospital. He is home now and doing fantastic but that was the first roller coaster ride. During this time I had a close friend go down on his bike. Most of us have had to deal with this in some form during our years of riding. Of course the next few days were spent at a Shock Trauma Center. The worst part began. I call it the LONG goodbye. We realize what is going to happen but our minds don’t want to accept it. He passed away. We gathered to say goodbye and support the family. This was the second roller coaster ride and I figured I could kick back and regroup. Boy was I stupid! The ride didn’t get to the dips and turns that were waiting for me. Little did I know the next part of the ride would take me on some of the toughest emotional hills and valleys I have ever experienced. I had just got home from the memorial service out of state. My phone rang and it was my Mom and she was crying. My brother has been dealing with liver cancer for a long time. He has been on the transplant list at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. The good news was that they had found a liver for my brother and he was on the way to the hospital. The bad news is that he was having a liver transplant. I know that is an oxymoron. I really was so happy that he was getting a liver that would save his life. It also meant there was a family somewhere that was dealing with the loss of a loved one. I got to Nashville on the first flight I could get. I went straight to my see my brother. He was being prepped and we began the waiting period. We waited for the transplant team to go and harvest the liver. About ten hours after they left they came in and told us that the liver was not viable for transplant. Another hill up and down on the roller coaster ride. The doctors apologized THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

I thought of my grandson and what a blessing his life will be to us all. I thought of my friend Wayne and all he did in his life. He was always giving back to the community. Then I thought of the family that gave my brother his life back and what a blessing that will be to his family and friends. Put it all together and I came up with BE A HERO! What is this? A very simple thing we can all do to leave this world a little better than we found it. I have sat in a transplant ward for a week and seen heart, lung, kidney, and liver transplant patients. So many lives have been saved and changed by a person who took the time to simply check the yes box on their driver license application. I spoke to two of the doctors on his transplant team and asked what I should say to the Thunder Roads readers. The answer was simple. The one act that we can perform as a human being that will directly help 7 other people is to become a DONOR. Think about that for a minute. In one act you help seven people. Most of you ride all the time for one charity or another. You give back all the time. When you have passed it will help your family to know that you still gave back and even though you are gone you are still helping. After thinking about this I thought it would be a GREAT living memorial to your memory. You always hear that you can’t take it with you. Do something that makes you a true AMERICAN HERO! A family somewhere will be eternally GRATEFUL. I know my family is. Who knows your gift may save the life of someone you know and love. Be a Hero, Hillbilly

A woman meets a gorgeous man in a bar.  They talk, they connect, they end up leaving together. They get back to his place, and as he shows her around his apartment, she notices that his bedroom is completely packed with sweet cuddly teddy bears.Hundreds of cute bears up on (3) shelves, cute, little ones all the way along the floor, cuddly medium-sized ones on a shelf a little higher, and huge enormous bears on the top shelf along the wall. The woman is surprised that this guy would have a  collection of teddy bears, especially one that’s so extensive, but she decides not to mention this to him, and actually is quite impressed by his sensitive side.She turns to him, they kiss and then they rip each  other’s clothes off and make hot steamy love.After an intense night of passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow, the woman rolls over and asks, smiling,”Well, how was it?” The guy says, “Help yourself to any prize from the bottom shelf.” ______________________________________________________ A young mother, accompanied by her small daughter, was in New York City. The mother was trying to hail a cab when her daughter noticed several women, scantily dressed, which were loitering on a nearby street corner. The mother finally hailed her cab and they both climbed in, at which point the young daughter asked her mother, “Mommy, what are all those ladies waiting for by that corner?”The mother replied, “Those ladies are waiting for their husbands to come by and pick them up on the way home from work.” The cabby, upon hearing the exchange, turned to the mother and said, “Ah, c’mon lady! Tell your daughter the truth! For crying out loud ~ they’re hookers!” A brief period of silence followed, and then the daughter asked, “Mommy, do the hooker ladies have any children?” The mother replied, “Of course, Dear, where do you think cab drivers come from? Three Bikers, a Honda Rider, a BMW Rider and a Harley Rider were sitting in a sauna. Suddenly, there was a continuing beeping sound. The Honda Rider pressed his forearm and the beeping stopped. The others looked at him questioningly.”That was my pager, “he said, “I have a micro chip under the skin of my arm.” A few minutes later a phone rang. The BMW Rider fellow lifted his palm to his ear.When he finished he explained, “That was my mobile phone. I have a micro chip in my hand.” The Harley felt decidedly low tech, but not to be out-done he decided he had to do something just as impressive. he returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from his ass. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at him.The Harley Rider finally declared...”Well, will you look at that, I’m getting a fax.” ______________________________________________________ Three guys were sitting in a bar. After a sip of his martini, one young professional says; “You know, tomorrow is my anniversary. I got my wife a diamond ring, and a new Mercedes. I figure that if she doesn’t like the ring, she will at least like the Mercedes, and know that I love her.” After finishing his scotch, the older guy says; “Well, my past anniversary I got my wife a string of pearls and also a trip to the Bahamas. I figured if she didn’t like the pearls, she would at least like the trip, and knowthat I love her.” The older biker downs his shot of Jack Daniel’s and says; “ Yeah, well for my anniversary I got my old lady a tee-shirt and a vibrator. Trooper– Hi there, I’m Trooper and I’m ready for a forever home. I’m a faithful and loyal Labrador Retriever mix who wants nothing more than to be in a warm, cozy and loving home. I enjoy long walks, eating out of kongs and playing fetch. I love running after tennis balls (and I could stand to lose a pound or two, so running is great for me). I have lived with other dogs and children in my previous home. I may be a BIG boy, but that just means there’s more of me to love!! I think I would be a terrific family dog, and I bet if you come in and meet me you will totally agree.

Petunia – Hey Everyone, I’m Petunia. Nice to meet you! I’m a really energetic girl, who is happy, playful, and loves tennis balls and Nyla bones. I did live with a cat in my previous home, and have been in a playgroup with other dogs here at the shelter. I’m a rough and tumble kind of girl when it comes to other dogs! BHS is actually looking for a possible foster home for me - being in a kennel can be really stressful! If you come to see me at the shelter, ask a staff member to bring me to you. That way you can see the real me; I just get so excited when people come to see me in my kennel that I kind of forget my manners! But hey, can you really blame me? I’m ready to get out of here and live in a warm, loving homeonce and for all!

Rosie – Natty Beau – Hi! My name is Rosie. I’m an active Hello. My name is Natty whippet/terrier mix with lots of Beau and I am a beautiful energy. I adore playtime with my young Labrador Retriever boyfriends at the shelter, especially mix who is friendly and Shadow. I’m really smart and quick sociable with people. M.B.’s NEW YEAR DAGO CABBAGE SOUP 1 Large Head of Dago Cabbage 1 Lb. Mild or Hot Sausage - browned & sliced or crumbled 1 Pkg. Polish Sausage - browned & sliced 1 Lg. Can Spicy Hot V-8 Juice 1 Lg. Onion, Large Chop 3 Stalks Celery, Large Chop Salt & Pepper to Taste

In a large soup pot, chop up your head of cabbage into 4 quarters and pour your V-8 juice over top. In a skillet, brown up your sausage and your Polish sausage combined. Drain. Add to soup. Add your onion and celery and salt & pepper, turn on low, cover and just let it very slowly cook down. This is also simple to throw in a crock pot and let go all day. When all these flavors combine and cook down, the flavor is fantastic! Be sure and serve with hot, crusty bread and butter.

FESTIVE CRAB & CRANBERRY CUPS 1/2 Cup Cream Cheese, Softened 1/4 Cup Premium, Canned Crabmeat, drained, flaked & cartilage removed 2 Tbls. Chopped Green Onions (scallions) 1 Pkg. (2.1 ozs.) Frozen Miniature Phyllo Tart Shells 1/2 Cup Whole-Berry Cranberry Sauce

In a small glass bowl (anything but plastic, makes crabmeat taste funny), combine the cream cheese, crab & onions until blended. Place th tart shells on an ungreased baking sheet. Drop 1 Tbl. of crab mixture into each shell. Top each with 1 tsp. cranberry sauce. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 min. until heated through. These two flavors blended together is yummy!

PEACH-BOURBON HOLIDAY HAM 1/2 Cup Bourbon, Divided 1-1/4 Cups Packed, Light Brown Sugar, Divided 1 Semiboneless Ham Shank, Half-Smoked Ham (8 lbs.) 2 Tbls. Whole Cloves 1 Pkg. Freestone Peaches, Thawed & Divided

Preheat oven to 325. Combine 1/4 cup bourbon and 1/2 cup sugar. Score ham; insert cloves. Place sut side down on rack in roasting pan. Bake 1-1/2 hrs, basting with mixture. In blender, puree 1/2 cup peaches, remaining bourbon and remaining sugar. Bake 25 min. Remove. In greased skillet, saute blended ingredients along with 1/4 cup water. Serve with ham as a dipping sauce. Make extra and drizzle allover ham also.

SIMPLY DELICIOUS CREAMED ONIONS 6 Large Onions, Sliced 1 Cup of Real Butter 2 Tbls. All-Purpose Flour 2 tsps. Salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper 2 Cups Whole Milk (do not use skim or 2%) *Alot of cooks use 1/2 & 1/2 when doing a “creamed” side dish.

In a large skillet, saute onions in butter until tender and golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon. Add flour, salt and pepper to sskillet; stir until smooth. Gradually stir in milk until blended. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat to medium. Return onions to the pan; heat thuroughly. Creamed onions have the sweetest taste and the perfect texture to compliment any meat dish.

Coat the bottom and sides of a 9-in. pie plate with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle with 1 Tbl. cracker crumbs; set aside. In a small bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water; cool slightly. Pour into a blender, add cream cheese and cottage cheese. Cover and process until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl (not plastic). Fold in whipped topping. Pour into prepared pie plate. Cam Chain Tensioners -99 Dyna & Touring/2000 & up All Models

hecking your Cam Chain Tensioners is easier than you might think. Simply pulling your Cam Cover off and looking at the two Tensioner Shoes could save you thousands of dollars in engine repairs or replacements. Depending upon the year and model of your Harley Davidson motorcycle the tools you will need are very minimal, a 3/16” Allen Wrench will pull the Cam Cover Screws and if the exhaust pipes are in the way of pulling the Cam Cover a 1/2” Socket and Ratchet with a suitable extension will allow you to move the exhaust out of the way. Now, if you’re wondering why you haven’t heard of this issue it is because Harley Davidson, to date, has no recommended mileage for checking this component and they do not state to check the Tensioners in any of their service intervals. But trust me, I have seen these Tensioners wear out at 10k, and have seen some last 50k. Not a gamble I would take on my engine. If left unchecked the damage could be catastrophic, including Oil Pump damage, Cam Shaft damage, and so on. Basically, something you can do yourself, or an inexpensive preventative maintenance check that could keep you ‘In the wind’ and out of your wallet. LAPLATA, MD. – Thanks to over 350 bikers, volunteers, and their friends and families, more babies in southern Maryland will be born healthy. On October 6 at Maryland International Raceway, riders came out to participate in Bikers for Babies and show their support for the smallest members of our community

This year, the March of Dimes celebrates its 75th anniversary and its ongoing work to help all babies get a healthy start in life. More than 4 million babies were born in the United States last year, and the March of Dimes has helped each and every one through research, education, vaccines and breakthroughs.

Over $32,000 raised by Bikers for Babies supports March of Dimes research and programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. One of the most important ways is to help women understand that in order to have the healthiest pregnancy possible, planning before pregnancy is a must. Thanks to donor support, the March of Dimes supported a NEW Centering Pregnancy® program at the Pregnancy Aid Center this year. Centering Pregnancy provides group prenatal care, improving the quality of prenatal care and educating women about their health during pregnancy. The March of Dimes also supports services that help promote the health and well-being of women before pregnancy to increase their chances of having a healthy baby. Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait is a community education program that teaches the importance that unless medically necessary, it’s best to wait for labor to begin on its own. Babies do best if they are born after 39 weeks gestation. You may have seen our public service ads for this throughout Maryland. “Giving the biker community an opportunity to help babies, while doing what we love is a great combination,” said Rebecca Bridgett, the 2013 Chairperson for the event. “Since our ties to our communities and families are so strong, helping the March of Dimes is a perfect fit.” Wayne Magoon, the 2014 Chair Elect added, “It was a fantastic event for a cause that is close to my heart. My twin grandsons were born premature this year, and I thank the March of Dimes for their support. I look forward to growing the event even further in 2014.” Premature birth is the most serious infant health problem in the United States today. It affects more than half a million babies nationwide each year. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have lifelong disabilities. The March of Dimes is committed to reversing this trend by funding research to find the causes of premature birth and providing comfort and information to families. Your riding history: I have been riding dirt bikes since I was about 6 yrs. old. Then started racing and move to motorcycles in 1976. My first street vehicle wasn’t a car it was a 650 BSA chopper. I’ve been riding street bikes for 36 yrs. I like riding in the mountains and country roads. I also like doing local poker run benefits for sick and needy children. When I built this bike I did it so I can ride the long haul rides. In 2012 I rode my bagger from my home in Waldorf, MD. to Daytona, FL for bike week. I love riding. As long as it’s not raining or snowing I’m out riding. I have rode in funerals when it was only 10 degrees outside. I have been in the biker lifestyle for 36 yrs. there is nothing like riding. Since i have built this bagger I like going to bike weeks in Daytona, FL and Ocean City, Md. It’s pretty neat the attention you get when you’re riding on the bike everyone’s heads are turning and people are pointing and talking about how nice my bike looks. I have been in 9 shows this year in MD, PA, and VA and have won 1st place in custom bagger at all 9 and also best of show at 8 of the events. Bike’s history: I bought this bike used in 2010 from an old man that didn’t ride anymore it only had 9500 miles on it. When I bought the bike it was completely stock and blue and white in color. Bought it home and started taking it apart. I put Arnott air ride on the rear, DNA Mamoth spoke wheels front is a 21 and the rear is 16 and lowered the front end and got a set or hard bags and stretched them. Then I took the rear fender and stretched it because I wanted to keep it as old school as I could and also to have something many people didn’t have. I then changed the set to a custom made seat. Put 18 inch Carlini original apes. I also put Vance and Hines true duals with Vance and Hines mufflers. I had all the tins and bags painted Pagan gold with flake. Rode it for that summer. Once summer was over tore it down again rebuilt the whole motor with the help from Mark Curtis. Did all high performance heads, pistons, clutch, cams put a screaming eagle 6 speed gear set and Lots of chrome and skulls all over the whole bike.. I also I had it repainted again Pagan gold with fine flake and hydro graphics reaper skulls and trible. Added a lot of spike bolt toppers and custom made skull derby cover rocker covers and point covers. Then had the seat redone with skull and flames which is the exact replica from a tattoo I have on my arm. The skull and flames are made from python skin and the rest of the set is alligator. Put all new trible floor boards and jaw bone passenger pegs which is sick, because I get so many compliments on them. It was a love of labor building this bike. I think I have accomplished exactly what I wanted. This bike is old school with a twist of new. 26

Michael VanceLead Guitar/VOX, Soaring guitar licks and sweet backing vocals are the garnish to any great rock band. Michael Vance began playing the six-string thing at the ripe age of 7. Without any formal lessons or schooling in music, Vance brings an eclectic mix of blues, funk, rock, and country to any stage he plays. Despite his youth, he has been blessed to share time on amazing stages with incredible people from Jefferson Starship to the Baltimore Ravens. Young Vance has also been accredited to such accolades including Baltimore Readers Poll’s Best Band in Baltimore and Bridging the Music’s Battle of the Bands. In his spare time, you can catch Vance hosting his illustrious open mic nights at the Judge’s Bench in Ellicott City on Tuesdays and Sideways Café in Westminster on Thursdays. And in his spare spare time, you may find him tenderly caring for his beard where all his talent resides. Also well noted during my interview was his heart and attention to those less fortunate. Within moments of our greeting I could see and feel the fire and passion that resides within Vance for both music and giving nature. Vance is a touching and gregarious individual with a genuine, authentic generous spirit. Anthony Grabowski - Drums, Every band needs the strong silent type backing them up. Behind the “kit” but not forgotten is Anthony Grabowski holding down the beat. Every soundman’s friend, Anthony brings a dynamic energy to the band that keeps the night moving and the dance floor hopping. A veteran of several past area projects such as SilverTung & Dirt and is currently involved with the local original project, Evolver. Prior to returning to Maryland, Anthony spent several years in California as part of the road crew for Limp Bizkit. Their loss is our gain!

lad you came back again this month. Pull up a chair and rock awhile. We can sip some cherry shine and talk with Garry Peterson the drummer for the Guess Who. Some of you will say who’s that? The Guess Who has been winning over fans since the 60s. The strange thing is you don’t hear many people say that’s my favorite band. But the three times I have seen them at bike shows I know most of the songs and everyone else is singing along the band. You still don’t know who they are? They are a band from Canada and some of their songs include No Sugar Tonight, No Time, These Eyes and of course American Woman. Let’s ask Garry some questions so we can help you out for the next time you get a chance to see in concert. HB- First question would have to be; how long have you all been at this? GP- 50 years, I’ve been in the band for 50 great years HB- I was out front before the show talking to some young folks and they kept saying they didn’t really know the band. Of course the old GP- That’s very nice of you to say but I thought we stunk out there folk like me have been listening to you for years. How cool is it that today. The average person won’t see it but we noticed. The show you guys are playing for a whole new generation of people? Must must go on and you just try and overcome the technicalities. feel pretty good. HB- So where do you go to from here? GP- Most of the time you can see three generations of people at our fests. Increased security has reduced the odds of success though, so terrorists have shifted their focus. The attack in Mumbai, India a few years ago demonstrated the effectiveness of a smallscale, military-style assault on an unarmed population (see our past column, “The Siege of Mumbai”). The Kenya attack used Mumbai as its blueprint. Unlike the 9-11 attacks, an assault like Mumbai and Westgate requires little training, skill or preparation. All it takes is people willing to do the deed, and some easily acquired armaments.

In the conclusion of their report, ABC took a dig at Noble’s comments by pointing out that the gun control debate in the US had recently been ignited by mass shootings, including one in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, just outside of Denver. What the report failed to note is that the movie theater where the massacre took place was posted “No Guns.” Not only that, the demented murderer passed by at least two other theaters

that were closer to his home, but which were not posted “Gun Free Zones.” Perhaps that was coincidence or there is some other explanation, but on the face of it, it suggests that Noble is on to something. It is frankly astonishing to me that Noble has taken this position publicly. I hope he will pursue this line of reasoning and that he can hold onto his position at INTERPOL long enough for his philosophy to spread through the agency and into police agencies they deal with. When victims become first-responders, criminals will become more cautious. ABC and the media can dismiss these ideas, but I’m not expecting terrorists to storm the Phoenix Cabela’s store any time soon.

Armed Citizens Respond to Terrorist Attack at Mall NAIROBI, Kenya — On September 21, 2013, unidentified gunmen attacked the upmarket Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The attack, which lasted until September 24th, resulted in at least 72 deaths, including 61 civilians, 6 Kenyan soldiers, and 4 attackers. The attackers held hostages and later engaged in gun battles with Kenyan security forces. Over 200 people were reportedly wounded in the mass shooting, with all of the gunmen killed. When the first shots of automatic gunfire burst out, Raju, a member of a local gun club, was waiting in line in a bank at the Westgate shopping mall. He crouched down, pulled out his phone and feverishly pecked out a text message: “I am inside and I can confirm this is not a robbery.”

Thousands of Ring-Necked Pheasants Released Throughout Ohio COLUMBUS, OH – More than 15,000 ring-necked pheasants will be released at 27 Ohio public hunting areas this fall to provide additional hunting opportunities across the state, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). “Ohioans have enjoyed more than 100 years of pheasants in Ohio,” said ODNR Director James Zehringer. “We are dedicated to increasing opportunities for Ohio hunters and continuing the strong tradition of game hunting for many generations to come.” Pheasants will be released Friday, Oct. 18, and Friday, Oct. 25, prior to the small-game weekends for youth hunters. Hunters age 17 and younger can hunt statewide for rabbit, pheasant and all other legal game in season during two designated weekends, Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27. Ohio’s small game hunting season begins on Friday, Nov. 1, with pheasant releases to take place Thursday, Oct. 31, and on the evening of Friday, Nov. 8. The final release of the year is scheduled to provide improved pheasant hunting opportunities throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and will take place the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 27. Beach City Wildlife Area in Tuscarawas County will not be an in-season release location this year. The habitat at Beach City Wildlife Area is no longer suitable for grassland dependent species such as the ring-necked pheasant.

CONGRESSMAN DEMANDS ANTI-MOTORCYCLE EXPLANATION FROM CDC U.S. Representative Tim Walberg (R-MI), a member of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, has sent a letter to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demanding answers concerning a recent CDC report that aims to discourage motorcycle use while ignoring the positive economic benefits for motorcycle riding. “As an avid and experienced motorcycle rider, I believe government should be in the business of promoting the recreational, economic and environmental benefits of responsible motorcycle riding – not discouraging it,” stated Congressman Walberg in the letter. “During difficult fiscal times, the American people would be better served by your continued efforts to address widespread societal health matters such as virus prevention, cancer and heart disease.” Rep. Walberg was prompted to action by a presentation given by the Helmet Law Review Team of the Community Preventative Services Task Force in late October 2013 which concluded that mandatory helmet laws would “produce substantial economic benefits.” Walberg is troubled by the fact that potential negative impacts on nationwide motorcycling are not addressed and questions whether the CDC should be tasked with researching and making recommendations regarding transportation safety. The Michigan Representative has also been prompted to ask CDC Director Thomas Frieden; “is it the goal or strategy of the CDC to reduce the use of motorcycles - a legal mode of transportation by recommending and pursing a federal helmet law?” GLOBAL MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY PROJECTED EXPANSION The Global Motorcycle Industry is projected to reach $93.67 Billion by 2017, according to Lucintel, a leading global management consulting and market research firm. U.S. TRAFFIC DEATHS RISE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2005 For six years through 2011, highway accidents and related fatalities declined each year. Improvements in vehicles and other safety education efforts were credited for that downward trend. But for the first time since 2005, that streak ran out, according to figures released recently by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Last year, 33,561 people were killed in highway accidents, up 3.3% from 2011. The increase was reflected across many of the categories that researchers follow, but motorcycle and pedestrian fatalities reflected the highest increases, up 7% and 6% respectively. There are currently more motorcycles in use in the U.S. than ever before, and 452,386 new on- and off-road motorcycles were sold nationwide in 2012 according to the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), up 2.6% over 2011. In addition to the deaths, the NHTSA data showed that nearly 2.4 million people were injured in crashes last year, a 6.5% increase from 2011, although miles driven remained about the same. Despite these increases, the new numbers are still far below the accident rates of the 1970s and 1980s. NHTSA preliminary data for the first six months of 2013 show that 15,470 people have died in crashes so far this year, a decrease of 4.2% compared with the same period last year. MOTORCYCLISTS SAFER BEHIND THE WHEEL Evidence suggests that roads would be safer if more drivers rode motorcycles, as motorcyclists are safer behind the wheel of a car than non-motorcyclists, according to a leading U.K. insurer. Equity Red Star compared car drivers to car users who also have an insured motorcycle, and found the latter 23% less likely on average to make a claim on their car policy. The firm also adjusted the figures to take into account the different typical ages of car drivers and motorcyclists, and still found the riders to be 21% better behind the wheel. The results showed motorcyclists were 20% less likely to make a bodily injury claim on their car policy. The insurer examined 200 million policies between 2007 and 2012. Rob Clark, Equity Red Star’s Head of Retail Motor, said: “A motorcyclist could, behind the wheel of a car, be said to be 23% better.” Clark presented the data during a conference organized by the Motorcycle Industry Association at the Department for Transport in London to examine evidence that increasing the number of motorcyclists on the road could actually improve safety.

MOTORCYCLE THEFTS DECLINE SLIGHTLY Your motorcycle could be stolen in a New York minute, especially if you live in NYC which is the nation’s capital of motorcycle thievery (903 thefts), followed by swingin’ Las Vegas (757), the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports. Next comes San Diego (633), Indianapolis (584) and Miami (535). Overall, just like when it comes to car thefts, motorcycle thefts have been dropping. In 2012, the year in which the NICB bases its analysis, they amounted to 46,061 ripped-off bikes, down 1% from the year before. Based on National Crime Information Center (NCIC) motorcycle theft data for 2012, Honda was the motorcycle brand stolen most often, with 9,082 for the year (representing 20% of all motorcycles stolen). It was followed by Yamaha (7,517=16%), Suzuki (7,017=15%), Kawasaki (4,839=11%) and HarleyDavidson (3,755=8%), rounding out the top five makes. When it comes to states, thieves appear to prefer warm weather -- just like all motorcycle riders. California was first (6,082 thefts), followed by Florida (4,110), Texas (3,400), North Carolina (2,574) and Indiana (2,334), and more than twice as many bikes were stolen during summer months than in the winter. Unfortunately, fewer stolen motorcycles are recovered than cars. While 53.9% of stolen cars were returned to their owners, only 39% of motorcycles found their way back. The NICB says that’s because it’s easier to “chop” bikes for their parts, hide them in barns or garages, or ship them out of the country in giant containers.

LAPD TO PAY $10 MILLION IN TICKET QUOTA CONTROVERSY The Los Angeles City Council has agreed to pay nearly $6 million to a group of police officers who accused their superiors of imposing a secret traffic ticket quota system. The $5.9 million settlement resolves a pair of lawsuits filed in 2010 by 11 LAPD officers assigned to a motorcycle unit. In the lawsuits, the officers detailed what they claimed were strict demands to write at least 18 traffic tickets each shift and that 80% of the citations be for major violations. Officers who failed to meet the alleged ticket minimums or raised concerns about them were reprimanded, denied overtime assignments, given undesirable work schedules, and subjected to other forms of harassment, including being kicked out of the motorcycle unit, according to the L.A. Times. The settlement, approved unanimously, brings to more than $10 million the amount of taxpayer money spent on payouts and legal fees from the ticket quota cases. But that number could grow because one more officer’s case is still pending. The ticket controversy has been a black eye for the Los Angeles Police Department, because ticket quotas are against state law.
