DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

March 2018 Last month was the Timonium Bike Show. I stopped by for a few hours on Saturday because I wanted to check out the Gerbings heated gear. I had heard that it was a good product and I thought it would be a good place to start to at least get fitted. I thought I might even buy the gear if it wasn’t too expensive. That was the plan. I met up with my best friend Buddi, who also rides, and we headed out to the show. Buddi showed me a side entrance to get into the parking lot and I couldn’t believe how much quicker it was than trying to get in through the main gate. I have to keep it in mind for next time. We make our way inside and I stopped to say hello to the guys and was informed that a fan had stopped by. When I heard the name, I knew right away who it was. It was a reader who I had exchanged emails with about the fact that I was thinking about not riding anymore. He had given me a lot of good points and thoughts so I was excited to meet him. I ran into him a few minutes later and we chatted for a few minutes. It was the first time that I actually met a reader of my articles and it was pretty cool. After parting ways with him, Buddi and I headed over to the heated gear table. I have heated gear but it’s not the best and it’s time for new and better gear. The Gerbings table was crowded to say the least but I was able to make my way through the crowd and get in line to be fitted. I tried on the jacket first and was immediately surprised at how heavy the jacket was. It was heavy but it was comfortable and I even liked the style and look of it. The jacket was a good fit and I got the approval from Buddi as well. Next it was time to try on the pants and they were even heavier than the jacket. I believe one of the workers said that the pants were eight pounds.

That doesn’t sound like a lot but they were fairly heavy. I figured out my size in the pants and then came the big question. How much? The jacket alone was $300.00! I didn’t catch the price of the pants but my guess is that they are at least $200.00. That was more than what I could part with at the time so I decided not to buy. I was happy, though, that I got service and was not ignored as I have been in the past by other vendors. I also now know the sizes I need and plan to buy next winter. I figured there is no point in buying now since it will be spring very soon! Buddi and I walked around some more and checked out the vendors but neither of us had bought anything. The shows are all the same and once you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all! We both unexpectedly ran into friends during our travels and it occurred to me that this is my life. While I may still be questioning my place in the biker world these days, one thing became certain while I was at the show: I’m not done riding. It’s such a big part of who I am that if I took it away from myself, I think I’d miss it eventually. The friends I’ve made and the friends I have yet to make are only a small part of riding but it’s an important part. “Bighead” had made a good point. He said to me that maybe I just need to expand the amount of people I ride with…find good people to ride with. I think there might be truth in that. I do have 3-4 people that I enjoy riding with but finding the time off at the same time is sometimes difficult. Maybe if I had more people that I connect with it might open some more doors and bring some more enjoyment that everyone seems to think that I’m missing. I guess time will tell but until then, I have to get my bike in the shop for some service and to figure out why it’s leaking antifreeze (again). Like always, thanks for reading and I’ll see ya on the roads!

TESTIMONY And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Revelation 12:11 This month I want to share a part of my (testimony) story. A story that began in Millsboro, Delaware back in 1953. I was one of 13 children born to a Native American woman. I never knew my father who died when I was very young. We went to a one room school where there was first thru eighth grade. My second cousin was our school teacher. When I became a young teen I began to wander from place to place. By the time I was fifteen I was beginning to experiment with drugs. Eventually I was doing cocaine, meth and acid. Needless to say I went down a plenty of bad roads as a result. When I was sixteen I got a fifteen year old girl pregnant and married her(we were divorced in 1976. We have a son together and he lives in Wilmington, De. On the Fourth of July in 1973 I went to visit my brother who lived in Camden, New Jersey and that is where I

6

met the love of my life, Debbie SantanelloBacon . We have been together every since and got married in 1976. Debbie and I have three wonderful children together. From 1973 to 1981 I was in search of something that would satisfy my soul and give me purpose in life. In 1981 we lived in Georgetown, Delaware and there we met a lady who lived in the trailer park we lived in. She invited us to church and I went. After a few visits one night I went to the altar and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ as my Lord. That night when I walked away from that old fashion altar call, where I was anointed with oil and prayed for, I was free from the drug addiction and alcohol. We moved to Farmington, New Mexico to work on the Navajo Reservation. Pastor there as well as in Douglas, Az. We now live in Southern,Maryland and loving it here. Rushing Wind Motorcycle Ministry was founded and we have seen many wonderful things happen within the biker community as a result. Thank you Thunder Roads

FROM ACROSS THE POND “LAS VEGAS AUCTION WEEK”

BY ANDY TALLONE Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

O

ne of the biggest events in the motorcycle year is ʻLas Vegas Motorcycle Auction Weekʼ. This shamelessly borrows from the nickname given to the huge collector car auction event held each year around the same time called Scottsdale Auction Week. attended both, this year. My wife and I drove the 2,075mile round trip, spent a week in Scottsdale drooling over cars, then two days in the freezing cold at Grand Canyon, before hitting Vegas for another 5 days of motorcycle auctions. All with a bad back. Yep, just as I was getting ready to leave on Saturday, January 13, I moved wrong and threw my back out. Someone commented “so, you cancelled the trip, huh?”. Hell no. For the first 8 days of our 14-day adventure, I was dragging one leg behind me. But I took several thousand pictures of hundreds and hundreds of gorgeous classic cars and motorcycles, along with one of American’s greatest natural wonders. By the time we reached Vegas, my back was starting to calm down, just in time to take on the nearly-2,000 motorcycles on display there. Scottsdale Auction Week is more or less set by the massive Barrett-Jackson classic car auction, which ran from January 13 through the 21st. They came with nearly 2,000 cars, with a heavy dose of American muscle cars & classics. In that same week-or-so, Russo & Steele (also heavy with American iron), Bonhamʼs, Gooding & Co. and RM Sothebyʼs (the latter 3 focused mainly on European exotics) each hosted impressive auctions. As mentioned before, I have a website called American-MuscleCars.net that brings me to events like this all the time, to both cover the event itself, and to take pictures of gorgeous cars. I did plenty of both, loaded down with Tylenol and Corona for the 8

And with 5 auctions to cover (actually, I only covered 3, European exotic cars donʼt interest me that much), thatʼs a lot of steps. Got a ton of great pictures though, and video, and did live feeds on my Facebook Page all week long. We left NorCal on Saturday morning, January 13, stayed the night in Needles, which as it turns out is steeped in Route 66 lore. On top of loving classic British motorcycles and classic American cars, Iʼm a huge Route 66 fan. We got to Scottsdale on Sunday the 14th. The auction was open for preview only, until Monday when selling started with automobilia. The cars started rolling through on Tuesday and didnʼt stop until Saturday. Overall bidding and prices seemed a little soft to me. There was plenty of money there in Scottsdale that week, with feverish bidding on some ultra-rare high-dollar museum pieces. The Bonhamʼs auction was loaded with Ferrariʼs, Jaguar E-types and air-cooled Porsches. There were records set that week by several of the auction houses. But a lot of the normal rank-and-file classic cars went for pretty low prices.

MARCH 2018

We had a couple of days to kill before the Mecum vintage motorcycle auction started in Las Vegas, so we took a detour to Grand Canyon. We stayed in another Route 66- town, Williams AZ, which has the distinction of being the last town along Route 66 to be bypassed by the interstate. We stayed in a classic (but recently restored) Route 66 motel and ate in classic Route 66 restaurants. The entire town seems to be oriented around Route 66...until you discover the train. The Grand Canyon Railroad runs from Williams to Grand Canyon Village on the rim of the canyon, and is the lifeblood of Williams. It makes one run a day leaving Williams at 9:30am on a 2-hour ride to the Canyon, then returning by 5:30pm or so. But not before the gunfight. This is no ordinary train ride, you see. It starts with a staged Old West gunfight that introduces you to a cast of characters who will continue to play a role in the rest of your day. The luxurious cars (if you opt for first class tickets, which I strongly recommend) have big reclining seats with gobs of legroom, and huge windows for looking out at the passing scenery. They served free snacks & soft drinks and had food & booze you could buy. Then the show started. Our cast of cowboys & girls entertained with joke-telling, guitar and accordion-playing, singing, and a train robbery on the way back. They made an otherwise boring ride one of the highlights of the trip. Grand Canyon itself was beyond description. Wow! They have a nice village up there with hotels, some good food & stuff to buy. And the views are jaw-dropping! It was about 20-degrees when we were there. This Grand Canyon thing was an afterthought. We were packed for Scottsdale and Vegas, so we had no warm clothes. I ended up wearing 6 shirts and a jacket, along with 2 pairs of pants & socks. Whatever works, right? We had a killer time, despite the cold. Iʼd been there once when I was a kid, but my wife had never seen it. We both came away totally blown away by what a wonderful and wondrous country this truly is.

auction are critical to me on my mission to take motorcycle pictures. In another day or so, the place would be filled with motorcycles packed in tight and swarmed with people. Not a great environment for picture-taking. But on Monday, the bikes are just trickling in. Some sit all alone waiting to be placed in the lineup. There’s almost no one around. I move quickly at times like these because they never seem to last. For some reason, as soon as I aim my camera at a car or a bike, people are suddenly drawn to it like a magnet. I try never to be rude, although sometimes itʼs hard not to say something. But I never do, weʼre all here for the same reason after all...to enjoy these bikes.

Ariel built a 650 twin called the Huntmaster. They’re fairly rare today. This is a 1958 model that sold at Mecums for a paltry $4,950. The object of my focus is of course classic British motorcycles. I have a standard set of pictures that I like to take of any bike I

Sunbeam built some of the most innovative Brit bikes. This 1951 S7 sold for $8,250. There is so much here that weʼve never seen, that most Americans will never see. Then it was on to Vegas. The Mecum Auction was set to run from Tuesday through Saturday, January 23-27. We got there Sunday night, and all-day Monday I was on the ground at the auction, taking pictures of bikes. shoot (assuming I have enough space around the bike to do it all). First, I shoot the label or tag, showing the auction or show number, and the make/model/year of the bike, and hopefully a brief description. Then I get a shot of the tank focusing on the emblem. Next, I get a full side shot from the left, making sure to situate the camera down low enough to get a straight-on shot of the bike. The big mistake most people make in taking pictures of their bikes is that they stand upright and point the camera down at the bike. You need to squat down on your haunches sometimes. While Iʼm down there, I get a closeup of the engine, maybe a few other tasty details and I get some angle-shots, Then I do the same thing on the other side, and shoot the gauges. Thatʼs around 8 to 15 shots per bike. When I got home from Vegas and sorted through them all, I had pictures sets of 196 bikes. Over these next few months I will be building lots of new pages around them for my website Classic-British-Motorcycles.com. My goal is to end up with one page for every single classic British motorcycle make/model/year. That may never happen, but Iʼll certainly get a lot of them. I have a lot of them now, 476 pages so far. Many of the bikes I photographed in Vegas were absent on my site, so Iʼll be building new pages around them. Others already have pages, but these new pictures may replace the old

The deal of the week: This 1970 Triumph Bonneville sold for just $6,050. I couldn’t believe it! one-day sale of around 100 bikes on Thursday of that same week with previewing on Wednesday. I went both days. This veryBritish auction comes off very formal when compared to the machine gun-staccato of the Mecum auction, but bidders seem to welcome the slower, low-pressure pace. Itʼs also a lot easier to figure out where you are in the bidding. They repeat it about ten times, you canʼt miss it. Instead of selling hundreds of bikes of every type and condition, Bonhams concentrated on 100 really special machines. They had tons of early Harleys and Indians, lots of sexy European bikes (mostly Italians and BMWs), almost no Japanese bikes and just a very few Brit bikes. But what they had was pretty exceptional. They had two Brough Superiors, which in their day were considered the ultimate motorcycle. You rarely see one, and they had two. They too seemed to have trouble getting the bids they were looking for, but it didnʼt keep

In the 60s, Indian motorcycles had British engines. This 1970 Indian-Velo 500 has a Velocette Venom engine. It sold for $30,000 at Mecums. ones if theyʼre better. Either way, Classic-British-Motorcycles.com is constantly changing & growing. Returning to the South Point Resort & Casino, Mecum Auction ran 5 days with 1,750 bikes. Mecum, a legend in the classic car auction biz (you see them on TV all the time) bought MidAmerica Auctions in 2013, after MidAmerica had built up the Vegas auction into the juggernaut that it was. At that time, they were auctioning around 700 bikes over a 3-day sale. Mecum has certainly grown their Vegas bike auction in size, but also in scope. Theyʼre real pros and they know how to put on a major auction. The energy never lets up, yet every Mecum employee is courteous and seems to have the time for you. Thatʼs because as frenetic as it looks to us, itʼs just another day in paradise for them. The early days of the sale also seemed soft, with some bikes having trouble getting bids high enough to sell them. Others went cheap. Of course, this being an auction, everything is possible, and some records were broken. But overall the feeling was that the bidding was off a little. Across town at the Rio Hotel & Casino, Bonhamʼs staged their 10

If you love motorcycles, you owe it to yourself to take the pilgrimage at least once to Las Vegas in January for Motorcycle Auction Week. Whether youʼre buying, thinking of buying, selling or like me just looking & taking pics, youʼll love it. Itʼs like the worldʼs largest motorcycle show. And itʼs in Las Vegas to boot! Gottaʼ love it! CONCEALING

WINTER ROAD CAPTAIN’S REPORT

At Walk Bridge

I

USED to believe that if you followed your heart, the universe would clear a path for you. While that may be true for some, my celestial bulldozer doesn’t seem to be clearing anything that leads the most laps arriving first at the finish, Kings of the Road but one that results in the most laps down, and passing the most cars for the win. Therein lies the measure of fulfillment: not what is achieved, but what is overcome.

Cotton and Granite

Kind of a tough predicament without a bike, but I tell people that I’d probably be dead if I had one. Because I’m just stupid enough to be riding this time of year, even with the mountain I have to go over every day, freezing over most nights. Listening to the roar of the stream out back from all of the rain and melting snow, I sensed my own seasonal “pulse”, if you will, and I became at peace, that this arrangement, like most situations, would be temporary as well. And today would be the start of a new cycle: riding every chance I get. I shifted into sixth gear. Heading down Route 11 from Staunton, I was meeting Chase, our business manager, and Ruth, his girlfriend and Lady HOG member, for breakfast in Lexington. Thomas Holsapple, GM of Shenandoah Harley Davidson, and my new boss, graciously provided a sweet, used Road King with Vance and Hines, and music capable fairing, to ride for the day. Once free of the clutch, I habitually reached back to an empty space where my co-pilot’s leg has always been, missing my Pillion, Rose, who was working. Enjoying the growl of the pipes, I finally got the cruise to work, after remembering there were two knobs on a 13. That poor left one got a workout for a while until figuring it out. The wind was finally warm again. And the friction and sound from the air, paired with some Rush on the speakers, was like being reunited with a long lost friend. And in that moment, I felt it: that feeling many riders get when the weight of the world leaps off of our shoulders so fast, we feel weightless from its draft. Chase and Ruth arrived a few minutes after I sat down. I didn’t 16

Extraordinary know there was an IHOP in Lexington. That’s because it used to be Berky’s, where Rose and I used to eat breakfast when we did our overnighters there. We will miss their breakfast bar. Once stuffed, I checked the radar one last time as the skies threatened above. The green blob was well north of us and I felt reassured that our day would remain dry. So, we’re getting rained on as soon as we start the bikes. The one little pencil dot of a cell just happened to appear right over top of us. Continuing south, it faded to a sprinkle, until finally subsiding near Buena Vista. We weren’t going to be near any civilization for a while, so we stopped in Glasgow for plumbing. By then we were dry.

was more than rideable. I coaxed Ruth to take some pics while we were on the go. I could have done it myself, but I figured it would give her an opportunity to capture something else besides the back of Chase’s helmet. And capture she did! Broken clouds were surrounding the summits, creating a sea of cotton and granite. Water filled ravines, creating temporary waterfalls and cascades could be seen on the inside coves of the mountains. And the road was just wet enough to summon a pace capable of noticing the spectacular show going on. It’s days like these, when the views are this extraordinary, that make a bike worth getting dirty. With Ruth and Chase at the Buena Vista Overlook The Appalachian Trail walk bridge is always a cool place to stop. The twisties getting there are rather dragon-like, so it’s a good place to walk off the adrenaline dump. We walked all the way to the other side, wondering if the water under us had yet traveled all the way from Goshen Pass where Chase and Ruth were earlier. Either way, it was another place to witness our planet alive. The parkway has always been a “go to” destination for me in part, because everyday is different, and it’s relatively close by. The mountains in West Virginia were still pretty chunked up with cinders. And even wet, our mountain road a little further east, Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

It was at the final overlook that I checked one last time to make sure everyone was having a good time. It was all thumbs up to this point. And the smiles on their faces assured me that another lasting memory was created in these magical mountains, on magical machines, on yet another day, that ended way too soon. The pictures tell the story. And if they are any indication of what this lifestyle is all about, then it’s time to clear another path, gain another lap, and let nothing stand in my way. Cheers and thanks for reading! Marc Ritchie - facebook.com/friendsof211 Photos: Ruth Clem

AMERICAN MADE: Still Exists in Shop Equipment

HMC Industries is synonymous with Quality American Made shop equipment. Service shops and consumers depend on quality equipment from HMC to stay on top of repairs and avoid costly delays when untested or inferior equipment fails. Manufactured in Marshalltown, Iowa, HMC’s brands of Hollingsworth, Hy-Pro©, & HMC are fabricated, welded, and assembled with American labor and advanced tech machines like their Okuma turning centers. HMC Industries began when Hollingsworth Mfg (since 1918) ventured out to create their own line of service equipment including gas caddies, lift tables, welding tables, hand pumps, and various hand tools. Today’s bikes are an investment and savvy consumers know it’s worth the small additional cost to use equipment from HMC when they want to service or detail their bikes. All of HMC’s SL series lifts utilize the same frame, cylinder, bearings, & non marking phenolic wheels. Having common parts under the table means less parts for the dealer to stock and consistent lift height and closed height. New products releasing this Spring include ZEUS; the first modular dual cylinder lift for large UTV’s and vehicles like Slingshot©, a new Oil Drain Caddy which has a side extending arm to reach under motorcycles and UTV’s while on the lift, and a new Veteran themed lift which HMC will donate a percentage of sales to Veteran causes. If you are looking to update your service equipment, add to your current service capacity or perhaps purchase a lift for personal use, be sure to check out the quality American Made equipment line from HMC Industries.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) TWO WHEELS TV NETWORK SET TO LAUNCH For motorcycle enthusiasts who can never get enough two-wheel action on television, TwoWheelsTV.com “all motorcycle network” is set to launch this Spring. Whether you’re seeking live racing action, or commentary from leaders within the industry, the new “over-thetop” (OTT) streaming network is dedicated entirely to motorcycles. “Like Netflix for motorcycling,” according to founder Alan Smith, Two Wheels TV (TWTV) will be available on an annual and monthly basis, and promises to deliver live motorcycle racing that’s streamed from all over the world, plus an on-demand library of movies, shows, race archives and other exclusive motorcycling programs. The soft launch is for iOS and Android devices; register at TwoWheelsTV.com. The full launch is expected in April, and TWTV will be supported by Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Roku. The launch of Two Wheels TV coincides with a spike in the conversation about U.S. motorcycling, as efforts to reinvigorate the industry have come from the grassroots level (“Give a Shift” and “Plus 1”), as well as a new initiative from the Motorcycle Industry Council (“Ride”). FLORIDA RIDERS FIGHT FOR STRICTER LAWS ON CRASHES INVOLVING CARS More than a hundred motorcyclists made their way to the Capitol in Tallahassee on Monday, February 12, as riders with ABATE of Florida, Inc. spoke to legislators about some of the safety issues they face every single day. The state president of ABATE, James “Doc” Reichenbach, told WCTV Eyewitness News that their main focus is trying to cut down on deaths due to drivers who are distracted. He wants to see a bill passed that protects the motorcyclists on the road. Reichenbach said the most common type of crash involving a car and motorcycle is from left hand turns. Reichenbach said he’s had five times more motorcyclists die recently from accidents Involving distracted or careless drivers. He believes this type of accident should be considered manslaughter. “We’re getting killed. We’re getting run over by cars and trucks and everything else and trying to stop that. We’re fathers, we’re moth28

ers, and we have children. We’re just like anybody else, we just happen to ride motorcycles, and we shouldn’t be an endangered species,” said Reichenbach, who also serves as Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). SOUTH DAKOTA “GANG BILL” OPPOSED BY MOTORCYCLE GROUPS Legislation addressing “gangs” in South Dakota is raising concerns among those in the motorcycle community, as House Bill 111 seeks to revise certain definitions regarding criminal street gang activity that some rider groups feel could target them. “It jumped out at me that it’s basically a profiling bill,” said Bryon Farmer, Chairman of the South Dakota Confederation of Clubs, who told KDLT News ”There are some good issues to trying to keep street gangs out of our communities and out of our state, that part I’m okay with. It’s just the broad range of the way the bill is written, it could be used against way too many good groups that are out there.” Motorcycle groups like ABATE of South Dakota are testifying in opposition of the bill they say targets them as gang members. “It’s not just motorcyclists; it’s so broad that just about anybody that’s wearing similar shirts could be defined as a street gang,” said Dave Brende, President of “Those Guys” ABATE Chapter. “We don’t want to be lumped in as a street gang member, we do a lot of good for this community and so do all the other clubs and organizations.” NEW MEXICO MRO HONORED BY MSF & DOT The New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) was presented an award from MSF and DOT for all the work they do to promote Safety Awareness in the state and for providing support to motorcycle crash victims through their “Biker Down” program. The award was presented during the annual Motorcycle Advisory Safety Program Committee Meeting, attended by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), New Mexico Department of Transportation (DOT), MSF Rider Coaches, local dealerships and the University of New Mexico Traffic Research Unit that keeps track of crash statistics for the state. Among the top topics discussed was promoting basic rider and advanced rider training to enhance rider skills to all ages. “We have always concentrated on the campaigns such as Watch Out For Motorcycles which we will continue; but it is just as important that

we also promote rider responsibility,” said Annette Torrez, NMMRO Chairperson. Torrez, who also serves on the board of directors for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) added that “With enhanced riding skills there are many factors that we as riders can be more aware of to avoid or prevent a crash.” The Motorcycle Safety Achievement Award states in part; “The NMMRO ceaseless efforts have made significant and enduring contributions to the safety of motorcyclists in the State of New Mexico. The professionalism, initiative and action demonstrated by NMMRO has contributed to saving lives.” NCOM CHRISTIAN UNITY REPORT In a recent Christian Unity Report submitted by Louie Nobs, Christian Unity Liaison to the NCOM Board, it was reported that “Over the past year, Christian Unity groups in the Midwest, Oklahoma and Texas have been growing and having regular meetings. As the result of information that was given in our Region II CU meeting in Oklahoma last November, some members have pursued certifications through FEMA for Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). This will help them get into areas in emergency situations to serve and assess with first responders. “I was able to share some of my experiences as a CERT member during Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area. Some of the tasks I was able to do was rescue people from flood waters by air boat, serve in shelters, and get supplies to area shelters. I would like to thank those of on the NCOM board of directors and bikers across the country who responded to our call for assistance. Supplies were shipped to Central Harley-Davidson in Austin and then trucked into affected areas. Most stores were unable to keep simple things like respirator masks, tarps and box cutters on the shelves in the affected areas. “A recent turn of events regarding the Waco case has brought relief to 20 affected families in that they have had their charges dismissed. Some of those folks have kept in contact with us and have also been recipients of assistance from Shield of Faith. We continue to keep praying for justice for all the bikers who were involved in this debacle. The article can be accessed at: www.kwtx. com/content/news/DA-to-seek-to-dismiss-charges-against-morethan-20-Twin-Peaks-bikers-473216573.html. “We are looking forward to a good turnout for the NCOM Convention in May in Mobile, Alabama. We are currently seeking out Christian Unity members and motorcycle ministries to assist with the hospitality suite. If you are interested contact us at ncom.christianunity@gmail.com or call Louie at 936-443-4500.” TEN STATES OBJECT TO EPA REDUCING HARLEY-DAVIDSON EMISSIONS PENALTY According to a recent report from Reuters news agency, ten U.S. states and the District of Columbia have announced they are challenging a decision by the Trump administration to drop a requirement that Harley-Davidson Inc spend $3 million to reduce air pollution under settlement the Obama administration announced. In 2016, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer agreed to pay a $12 million civil fine and stop selling illegal after-market devices that caused its vehicles to emit too much pollution, in vioThunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

lation of the Clean Air Act, and was ordered by the EPA to spend nearly $3 million to instead retrofit or replace wood-burning appliances with cleaner stoves to mitigate air pollution. The Justice Department in July cited a new policy by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and an ongoing review of the penalty by a government auditor in proposing to drop the $3 million penalty from the settlement. A U.S. District Judge must still decide whether to approve the revised agreement. The Harley-Davidson settlement resolved allegations that Harley sold about 340,000 “super tuners” enabling motorcycles since 2008 to pollute the air at levels greater than what the company certified. Harley-Davidson did not admit liability, and said previously it disagreed with the government, arguing that the tuners were designed and sold to be used in “competition only.” The Harley-Davidson settlement came amid greater scrutiny on emissions and “defeat devices” by U.S. regulators after Volkswagen AG admitted to using illegal software to evade U.S. emissions standards in nearly 600,000 U.S. vehicles in September 2015. INDIA PULLS BACK ON PLAN TO ENFORCE APPROVED HELMETS Police in India have withdrawn a rule requiring motorcycle riders and passengers to wear ISI-approved helmets, after a week of seizing non-approved helmets and fining riders. Motor Vehicle Rules in Karnataka, a state in southwest India, require that helmets have the ISI mark (that certifies acceptable levels of quality and crash performance). Traffic police officials had set the deadline of February 1st for all riders and pillions (passengers) to switch to ISI branded helmets. Now though, this deadline has been withdrawn. In announcing this sudden change, the Commissioner of Police said in a statement; “Traffic policemen on duty cannot decide the standard of helmets by a mere physical inspection and hence it is unfair to penalizing bikers for wearing sub-standard helmets… Each and every helmet we confiscate would have to be sent to the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) office and we could not impose a fine until we got the results.” Many bikers who wear helmets branded with ECE and DOT marks, said to be better than ISI in terms of quality and crash performance, complained that the ISI-helmet rule was unfair. Now that the BIS has clarified that a helmet’s quality cannot be assessed by just looking at it, the traffic police department of Karnataka will no longer check for the ISI-mark on helmets worn by riders and pillions of two wheelers in India. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.” ~ John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), 35th US President

BULLET POINTS I NDUS T RY ARTICLE BY: BRODY KENNEN

PHOTOS BY: THALES GROUP & SIG-SAUER

SHOT Show has come and gone in the year of 2018. It is reported that SHOT is not the largest firearms / outdoor-oriented trade show, following up the NRA Annual Meetings, but it is where every manufacturer teases their upcoming products for the next fiscal year first. I haven’t been impressed by the showings from SHOT over the last few years. Unfortunately, politics has led to a stunting of the industry’s innovation – either through old legislation or the threat of new legislation. Due to recent events, the industry has stuck to producing mass amounts of the same old, same old. A whole lot of drama for a whole lot of nothing. So, what was impressive?

LITHGOW ARMS ATRAX F90MBR

SIG P365 SUBCOMPACT

SIG-Sauer P365 Handgun This handgun did not catch my immediate attention. It was another “Glock-43 sized” 9mm offering. The dimensions were almost to the exact same specifications. It didn’t become apparent until later that the handgun held ten- to twelve-rounds before aftermarket upgrades whereas the competition was usually limited to six or seven rounds at the base capacity. The vast improvement, for subcompact handguns, is in the magazine. The main body of the magazine is double-stack, but extremely slimeline, and it bottlenecks the upper of the magazine for the thinner grip profile toward the top. Overall, this is the firearm which I am most excited to get my hands on.

Lithgow Arms Atrax F90 The Australian company, Lithgow Arms, is bringing their new spin on the Steyr AUG to the United States. The weapon has innovations taken from the earlier Thales Australia F88 Austeyr rifle; which was produced under license. The F90 is a semi-automatic, export model of the new Enhanced F88. Lithgow’s main rival will be Steyr Arms itself. There are two models noted on the Lithgow USA site: one utilizes standard AUG magazines and custom Magpul magazines, and the other model is the Modular Bullpup Rifle and that model uses conventional STANAG magazines. The projected MSRP is $1,999 and that puts it slightly under the AUG M3-A1 currently on the market. The rifle is more traditionally bullpup than the older AUG; like the comparison between the X95 and the older Tavor SAR. The difference is a cross-bolt safety mechanism as opposed to the traditional AR-style lever. Also, very different from normal rifles is how the boltcarrier group is the serialized part on the rifle, instead of the rifle chassis itself. The Atrax F90 is different, while not being too different. If you want to see extended versions of these articles, then visit www.thearmednovelist.com. Questions or comments? Email thisistheline3@gmail.com.

IWI Tavor TS12 Shotgun A shocking addition to the IWI-US line for SHOT. We were all enamored by the .308 Winchester-chambered Tavor-7 and then someone dropped pictures of a Tavor-esque, rotating tri-tube cylinder, semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun. I was initially concerned with the possibilities of a patent violation – as there is one other similar design that is on the U.S. market. The SRM Arms 1216 also has a rotating tube-cylinder, but there is a difference in the locking mechanisms. The TS12 also stays in a much tighter package due to it being a bullpup design. Additionally, one of the design features is that when the shotgun goes dry and you rotate in a new cylinder to feed, the next round will automatically feed into the chamber. The overall platform points to it being a very good candidate for breaching and home-defense uses.

LEPRECHAUN’S SECRET STEW 1 Pkg. of Kielbasa (comes with 2 long pieces per Pack, like a left & right that forms a big O) 2 Pkgs. of New Orleans Flavor Sausage Links (these are all in the “sausage section” of your grocery’s Meat Dept. 1 Bag of Very Small Red Potatoes 1 Bag of Petite Carrots; pre-peeled, in veggie dept. 1 Can of Kernel Corn 1 Large Head of Cabbage Salt & Pepper to Taste 2 Boxes or Cans of Chicken Stock - unsalted kind 1 Cups of Water 1 Bottle of Dark Beer (if all you have is light, o.k.) 4 Chicken Bouillon Cubes (place in small cup of hot water to dissolve down) 1 Tbls. of pre-minced Garlic (in veggie dept.) 1 Small Palmful of Coriander 1 Small Palmful of Parsley 1 Tsp. of Chili Flakes (add more if you prefer spicier) In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a large pat of margarine to pan, and chop up your Kielbasa into 1/4 inch pieces. Cut up the Louisiana flavored sausages the same way and fry up with Kielbasa. In a separate Stew Pot, add your chicken stock and water and bouillon cube mixture on medium-low. You want a slow bubbling boil. Chop up your cabbage into long strips and take the time to peel apart the layers. Once you put the stew pot lid on, the cabbage will wilt down fast. Either cut your baby carrots into halves or leave them whole; your choice. Add garlic and all spices and corn to the broth. Once your sausages are browned well on all sides, add to the broth, cut your red potatoes in half and add to the broth. Put a lid on this and just let it go for approx. an hour and a half. If you do in a Crock Pot then cook on low for as long as it takes for potatoes and carrots to be soft. While it’s cooking; throw in a couple Tbls. of quality margarine or butter; your preference. Don’t forget your chili flakes as you want this spicy, but not hot. There’s a big difference in taste between the two. Serve this up with some really rustic, crusty bread that has been smeared with butter and garlic powder and broiled off in the oven. This is total comfort food and it literally takes like 15 minutes to get it all going and in the stew or crock pot. It’ll have ya’ doing the Irish Jig right in your own kitchen!

BEER & BACON MAC N’ CHEESE 1 Box of Large Elbow Macaroni; cooked 5 mins. shy of being soft, as has to finish cooking in oven. 1 Whole Pkg. of Bacon cooked up; place on rack over sheet pan & cook in oven @ 425 until crispy, dark golden brown. No splatter mess on stove. Simple. 1 Tbls. of Minced Garlic 1/2 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream 3 Cups of Shredded White Cheddar Cheese 1 Cup of Shredded Parmesan Cheese 1 Lg. Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese 1 Lg. Vidalia Onion; large chop; sautéed golden 1 Tbls. of Spicy Brown Mustard 1 Bottle of Amber or Dark Beer Mix all together (except bacon) in your deep baking dish until well blended. Cook at 400 degrees or until top is golden brown. Remove from oven and put in your crisp bacon, leave plenty to sprinkle over top. Serve this immediately piping hot before bacon can turn limp. This is phenomenal twist on old style.

OH SO LUCKY! IRISH GREEN CUPCAKES w/ GREEN BUTTERCREAM FROSTING 1 Pkg. of White Cake Mix Follow package directions, only add GREEN food coloring to the mix as dark as you prefer. Bake as directed. If baking directly in cupcake tins be sure and spray bottom & sides generously. If baking in cupcake papers, only fill 3/4 full. Cool thoroughly. Buy 2 cans of Betty Crocker Buttercream frosting and again add food coloring to the desired green that you want. Frost cupcakes generously. Take a butter knife and dab at the frosting to make stiff peaks after you’re done frosting. Looks very pro. *Tip: Take frosting and place it in a plastic ketchup bottle like you see in Diners, and stick it a 1/2 inch into the side of your cupcake and squirt to have a creamy filling surprise when you bite into cupcake. Another cool & delicious treat tip is chop up a bunch of chocolate mint squares, sprinkle over quality Vanilla ice-cream and then pour heated, bottled Caramel sauce all over the top. So Simple Sweetie!

Happy St. Patty’s Day Bikers!

A couple are sitting in their living room, sipping wine on St. Patty’s Day. Out of the blue, the wife says, “I love you so very, very much!” “Is that you or the wine talking?” jokes the husband. “It’s me,” says the wife, “Talking to the wine.” --------------------------------------------------------------Ya’ know, I consider myself to be a positive kind of person but swear there are days when people just irritate the hell out of me and it’s then that I come to the realization that some people couldn’t be nice even if a Unicorn shoved a Fairy Wand up their ass while Judy Garland stood there singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. --------------------------------------------------------------What Leprechauns do for kicks: Step 1: Go to the Pet Shop Step 2: Buy Bird Seeds Step 3: Ask Cashier how long it will take for birds to grow? VIRGINIA COALITION OF MOTORCYCLISTS 2018 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By Matt Danielson The Motorcycle Law Group

The website for the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM) has been updated to show the current list of bills pending before the Virginia General Assembly which would potentially affect motorcyclists if they become law. You may view those bills and follow their status at vcomonline.org. Simply click on the “Bills Of Interest” button at the bottom of the page. For your convenience I have listed those bills below, along with links to the General Assembly Website so that you can track them should you wish. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments concerning any of this legislation please do not hesitate to contact me. Matt Danielson McGrath, Danielson, Sorrell & Fuller The Motorcycle Law Group 1-800-321-8968 Motorcyclelawgroup.com Senate Bills Regulation of Attire Bill Number: SB667 Introduced by Senator Deeds Authorizes a locality to pass an ordinance to regulate, restrict, or prohibit the wearing of any combination of attire or weaponry commonly associated with military combat, paramilitary operations, or warfare that gives the impression that the wearer is an onduty member of the United States Armed Forces, an official law-enforcement agency, or the militia during any permitted assembly of persons or movement of persons or vehicles if such attire constitutes a threat to the public safety or welfare. VCOM opposes this bill and sees First Amendment Implications. Given the wording of this bill VCOM fears that it could unintentionally negatively impact the many military veteran motorcycle clubs in Virginia, as well as groups such as the Blue Knights. VCOM respects the intentions of the bill, but we are extremely uncomfortable with the actual language of the bill. Bills in The House of Representatives Careless Driving Bill Number: HB426 Introduced by Delegate Levine Provides that a person who operates a motor vehicle in a careless or distracted manner and causes of serious bodily injury to a pedestrian or person riding a bicycle, electric wheelchair, electric bicycle, wheel chair, skateboard, skates, foot-scooter, animal, or animal-drawn vehicle is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. VCOM believes that enhancing punishment on those who due to careless driving cause serious bodily injury or death should not be limited to only certain types of road users. We believe that the bill is too narrow and we will work to expand the protection to all road users to include motorcyclists 44

Auxiliary Lighting for Motorcycles Bill Number: HB1464 Introduced by Delegate Robinson by Request of VCOM The bill provides that motorcycles and autocycles may be equipped with red or amber standard bulb running lights or light-emitting diode (LED) pods or strips as auxiliary lighting. The bill requires such lights to (i) be directed at the ground, (ii) not emit a beam of light greater than 25 candlepower per bulb, (iii) not be attached to wheels, and (iv) not be blinking, flashing, oscillating, or rotating. Such lighting is not subject to approval by the Superintendent of State Police. The purpose of the bill is to allow motorcyclists to utilize LED type auxiliary lights to increases visibility of motorcycles, especially at night. Auxiliary side lighting lessens the chance of a collision caused by an automobile or truck changing lanes into a motorcycle. Several states neighboring Virginia (Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee & West Virginia) do not prohibit such lighting, or have adopted similar legislation in order to increase visibility to motorcycles. There have not been any reported problems associated with such legislation. This bill adopts language recently approved by Illinois. Virginia Code and federal regulation require side lighting for automobiles and trucks but not motorcycles. There is currently no “approved” lighting on the market which is appropriate for most motorcycles. Prohibition Against Leaving Unattended Vehicles Running Bill Number: HB605 Introduced by Delegate Carr Authorizes any locality to adopt an ordinance prohibiting any person from leaving a motor vehicle unattended while the motor vehicle is running, including a vehicle that remains stationary in the parked or neutral position. Such ordinance shall not apply to any commercial, law-enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services vehicle. VCOM opposes this bill. Many Virginia motorcyclists ride year round and use their motorcycles as their primary vehicle to go to and from work. On cold mornings many of those riders who do not have garages allow their motorcycles to warm up outside. This bill would allow localities to prohibit that practice unless the motorcyclist was standing outside with the motorcycle. VCOM believes that is an unnecessary burden. VCOM is also uncomfortable with allowing such a prohibition on one’s property. Increase in Cap on Motor Vehicle Inspection Fees Bill Number: HB582 Introduced by Delegate Bloxom Increases from $12 to $15 the maximum amount any safety inspection station can charge for an inspection of any motorcycle and increases from $16 to $25 the maximum amount any safety inspection station can charge for an inspection of any vehicle other than a tractor truck, truck that has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more, or motor vehicle that is used to transport passengers and has a seating capacity of more than 15 passengers, including the driver, motorcycle, or autocycle. VCOM recognizes that the cap on fees has been in place for some time now and that it will almost certainly be raised. The last time inspection fees for motorcycles were raised VCOM was able to get a portion of that increase to be directed to the Virginia Rider Safety Training Fund. VCOM will work to do the same thing with this increase should it pass and become law.
