Are You Feeling Discouraged?
promised us light in place of darkness. He promised that prisoners would be set free (Isa. 42:7). The death of discouragement and true spiritual freedom begin here and now for the Lord’s servants!
When You Feel Discouraged - When the process was slow and the days were long, Jesus Christ experienced the immediate assistance of God. And so may we! “I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations.” ~ Isaiah 42:6 (NLT) The Lord promises to direct His servant, to be His protector and keeper, sharing His presence in all things. “I will take you by the hand and guard you,” God promises. There must have been many wearisome days when Jesus of Nazareth, the servant of the Lord, thought of those words. Did He recite: “He will not falter or lose heart until justice prevails throughout the earth” (Isa. 42:4), as He wrestled with ornery disciples, rebuked pious Pharisees, or dealt with the rank unbelief of the people? When the process was slow and the days were long, Jesus Christ experienced the immediate assistance of God. And so may we! We, too, are His servants. If we have been born from above, we are dressed in His Spirit. We, too, must bring a right answer to a wrong world, and we, too, can know He will guard and support us, and give us His immediate assistance in the face of frustration and persecution.
Lord, You are with me in all things. You have dressed me in Your Spirit. You have promised that You will guard and support me. When I choose to let my daily situation get me down, help me to lift my eyes to You and remember all You have promised. I praise You for this reminder – I should never be discouraged! Amen. Psalm 34:17-19 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
If Christ is not discouraged, knowing His kingdom has come in the hearts of people and will one day come universally, then we need not be discouraged either. God gave Jesus as His “symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations” (Isa. 42:6). The word covenantmeans “promise.” God

CHICA: Hey I’m Chica, a social butterfly who loves everyone I meet. I am a five year old Border Collie/pit mix full of energy and like to stay active all of the time. Long walks, running and playing with toys are just some of the things that I enjoy. My favorite thing is actually being with people. As far as other animals, it is best for me to be the only animal in the home so I can be queen of my domain. I’d love this so that I can get all of my new family’s attention. My previous family said I am a lovely and intelligent dog who enjoys training and that I will work hard for fresh carrots and other treats. I also love to snuggle and cuddle and will spoon with my family under the covers at night. If you want to adopt a loving, loyal and faithful companion who wants you all to themselves then please consider meeting me. See ya’ soon. Chica’s adoption fee is sponsored so she is free to adopt! TATIANA: Tatiana here, and all I want is a home to call my own. I’m full of energy; some people say I still act like a young pup. I enjoy going for long walks and being with people. I’m a social butterfly if I do say so myself. I like playing with toys and ripping apart enrichment toys to get to the treats inside - it’s pretty fun and tasty. I know the command “sit” and I’m hoping to learn even more fun things with my new family. Please consider adopting if you are looking for a new canine friend. See ya’ soon!
CHARLIE: Hey I’m Charlie, a Belgian Malinois mix, coming to you from BHS in search of my forever home. I’m an extremely active and energetic gal who would love to find a new family who can keep up with me! I love running, going for long walks and playing with toys of any kind. One of my other favorite things is eating...I love food, kongs and getting treats after I’ve been told to “sit”. When I do decide to calm down I love belly rubs or jumping up on the couch to sit with my new family. If you want to adopt an intelligent, beautiful and social gal like me then please come in soon and ask to see me! HUGO: Hi there, I’m Hugo. I’m a smart, cutie-pie looking for my forever home. I may be a bit shy at first (I like to play a little hard to get), but give me a treat and we’ll be fast friends. The way to my heart is definitely with treats. Just make sure they don’t have any peanuts in them; I have a peanut allergy so nothing with peanuts or peanut butter for me. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of other yummy treats I can have! I know lots of commands like sit, paw, down, stay, come, and even speak! I told you I was smart! I love to go for long walks, to run around in the sun, and to play with tennis balls. Tennis balls are definitely my favorite. I’ll carry them around or sometimes flatten them... just something silly I do. Come out and visit me soon! My fee has been sponsored by a generous donor!

I am often asked, “What is ABATE of Maryland?” and “What does ABATE do?” ABATE of Maryland Inc is a grassroots lobbying organization that provides a unified and organized voice for motorcyclists in the state of Maryland. ABATE has established and continues to maintain a solid rapport with our local and state legislators and regulatory agencies. ABATE of Maryland Inc. formulates plans and strategies for developing and introducing motorcycle legislation which strengthens our rights as riders. We lobby in Annapolis every Monday night when the legislature is in session. ABATE members also attend meetings, hearings and special sessions when it is necessary. With the help of our friends in the legislature, we try to pass laws that will help all of the motorcyclist in Maryland, and defeat bills that would become laws that would be detrimental to those of us that ride motorcycles.
ABATE of Maryland Inc. works hard for every single motorcyclist in the state no matter what kind of bike you ride, or who it is that you ride with. Not only during the legislative session, but all year long. ABATE members are always watching and listening for anything that could be detrimental to motorcyclists in the state. ABATE of Maryland works for every motorcyclist in the state, whether you are a member or not. If you are not a member and like riding your motorcycle when, where, and how you want to, without unnecessary government intrusion, then you should join ABATE and help us continue to fight for your rights. DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC
THE NEED FOR SPEED
Happy February! The winter will be over before you know it! I for one can’t wait! I took my bike out a few weeks ago and I was using my heated gear. I stopped to purchase me a pair of heated gloves. My heated glove liners just weren’t cutting it anymore and they actually started burning my hands. It took me a while to get a pair that fit me well enough to where I could still move my fingers but once I was able to find a good pair, I was on my way. The heated gloves were so nice! There was only one problem…the rest of me was getting cold. I realized that the rest of my heated gear was no longer working. I stopped at a gas station only to find out that I lost my controller for my heated gear. I’m not surprised. The thing was always falling off but I always realized it or someone around me did. I don’t know if it fell off while I was riding or what the deal was. If you should buy the Hotwired brand heated gear, be warned that this is something that happens as I’ve read reviews where other people have had this same problem. I have to buy a new one and when I do, I’m going to wrap tape around it to keep it from falling off. I’ll be glad when I won’t have to deal with the heated gear for a while. I think rain gear is more important than heated gear but I hardly ever have to wear mine. Speaking of rain, during the holiday’s I was in WV visiting my parents. We went to go visit my brother and his wife in Berkley Springs and we took Thomas Mountain to get there. Anyone who knows that mountain knows it’s a curvy and windy road – a biker’s dream. I haven’t gotten my bike on this mountain but it will happen this summer! The day was gross. It was really foggy and had been raining off and on. The roads were very wet. At one point, I had to stop because the car in front of me was turning really slowly. I happened to look in my rearview mirror only to see a crotch rocket stomping his gears down really fast. I think he almost dropped the bike from having to stop so suddenly. I never saw him coming up behind me, I only saw him coming to a quick and sudden stop. I’m glad he didn’t go down. When we started moving again, however, he went around me…on a solid line. He then started flying around the turns. Okay, I get it…those turns are fun! However, the visibility was really bad from the fog and the roads were wet. He must have had a death wish. It was only a matter of seconds before he was gone and out of our sight. It made me wonder “why do we love to speed?” If you think about it, this guy was more than stupid for riding like that when he had the fog and wet road surface working against him, but, what about on a dry and clear day? We’ve all been guilty of it. I’ll admit that sometimes, I want Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic
the slow back roads. I want to take my time and just cruise and enjoy the ride. There are other times, though, when I want to just get on the bike and twist the throttle a bit more than I should (I never do it during bad weather though). I think our emotions play a lot on the way we ride. It’s easy to say that when you are really angry, getting on the bike and taking off like a bat out of hell sounds like a great solution. However, I think sometimes when you are feeling good, getting on the bike and riding like you are on a race track, happen a lot too. I mean, when you are feeling good already, what can you do to enhance that feeling? Speed! But why? We all know that the faster we go, the harder we could fall, so why do we put ourselves in that situation? Is it the adrenaline? Does it make us feel like a super hero? Does it make us feel invincible? I think we could say yes to some or all of those ideas. I think it really comes down to “survival.” When there is a terrible snow storm coming, what do you do? You raid the grocery stores, rent some movies, and get ready to enjoy the day indoors. When the storm is over, you start digging out. Did you ever stop and pay attention to how you feel when it’s all said and done? You feel like you conquered the world – or Mother Nature. You feel good and your adrenaline is up. I think speeding is the same thing. Of course speeding is fun and the wind in your face feels great but that’s not the only reason we do it. I think it’s because once we’ve finished our trip, once we’ve got it out of our system, we feel like we just cheated death in a way. WE survived something that could have killed us. That makes us feel like that super hero. We feel good! The adrenaline is flowing through us and we feel like we could do anything. Is it smart? No! Is it dangerous? Yup! Will we all keep doing it? Probably! It’s human nature. Some people jump out of airplanes, some people inject drugs into their body, some people help other people, some people drive race cars…all to feel like we survived something big to make us feel like we are on cloud nine and in control of ourselves. Us, we ride. We may not do it smartly sometimes, but it’s our “high”. I’m sure some of you are reading this right now and thinking I’m nuts and saying you never speed on your bike. You are right, I am nuts and you may never speed on your bike but you do ride and you probably ride the back curvy roads, the more dangerous roads, and you do it for the same reason that a lot of people speed on their bikes. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t speed every time I’m on the bike and when I do, it’s not for long periods of time - just long enough to get it out of my system. I’d never speed when it’s foggy and the roads are wet though. That’s just plain stupid….and I’m crazy…but I’m not stupid!

T
ROAD CAPTAIN’S REPORT
he inspiration for this ride came from the weather forecast. Intellicast.com was showing 60s and 70s for the next two days. The only problem was, I had to work the following day. I sent my boss a text asking for that day off. He obliged. He’s a great boss. There was another slight issue: where to go? That should have been the easy part, but we just rode most of Skyline Drive the day before, and it really wasn’t in that great a shape for bikes. And another day of over-cautious driving on a road we were just on wasn’t really inspiring. I remembered scouting out some areas near Deep Creek Lake in MD, last year, but never pulled the trigger and opting instead, for Summersville Lake in WV. I brought up Google Maps and searched for nearby lodging and found the Garrett Inn online and booked a room for that evening. Nauti fully loaded, Rose and I geared up and headed out. I brought up the inn from my saved places on my smartphone and chose “avoid highways” in the navigator app at our fuel stop. They had ethanol free gas. It always adds a little more bark along with her growl, but on this day, the wind gusts, were howling even louder. The app was taking us out 55 and on to the “H” corridor from Wardensville, WV. Even though “avoid highways” was selected, this one qualifies as an exception and gets a pass, because it’s anything but a typical highway. Ascending up the grade to the super slab, I felt, and heard, the first of Notus’s heavy breaths, which explained why the temps were above normal. I keep forgetting to look at that part of the forecast. It might as well be labeled, “Greek Wind Gods Outlook.” It was deafening. Even ACDC went silent in my earbuds. I was keeping up with a fairly spirited couple of SUVs climbing the hill. I didn’t want to get too crazy with all of the cross winds and gusts, as they were knocking us around a bit, but getting passed by a minivan was a tad
emasculating. And from the “smile it gets worse” department, I noticed the KIA emblem. After letting the cagers go and applying some discretion to whatever part of valor I had left, my embarrassment was soon replaced by paying attention to the road and keeping the bike on two wheels. The gusts were massive. I had to keep reminding myself to relax my arms. The sweepers were a bit tricky with the winds swirling and gusting. Gusts from one side often ended up from the other, by the end of many of the corners. I was thankful I had a windshield. As demanding as this was, I was having great fun. This kind of, on the edge, hyper-awareness is one of the reasons I love to ride. Couple this with the scenery unfolding before us, and the next thing you know, you’re in an Old Milwaukee moment. It doesn’t get any better than this. Well, it does, but you’d get arrested. The app was instructing us to continue on 48, on a stretch we’d never been on, that had recently opened. Aside from this new section, I’d been on this road at least a dozen times, and never seen much traffic. In addition to the KIA EMV (KIA Emasculating Mini Van), there were only 2 more vehicles that passed us. Who builds highways like this? It’s just uncanny. Anyone who likes speed can have a field day here. It’s so wide open and the views are magnificent! If you’re like me, you’ll wish your bike had another gear. Unless there are drones with radar. The last section of the highway climbs for a few miles and crosses a windmill farm near Mount Storm. This site contains 132 turbines over 300 feet high. It generates 264 MW of renewable energy. They get your attention miles before you’re there and add a bit of anticipation to the journey. It’s kind of like a cool crescendo to the end of the highway song. Once we exited, it was about another 25 miles or so to the inn. We stopped for fuel in Loch Lynn Heights before checking in. We got to

our basecamp and it was closed. There was a sign on the door at the office to call. I left a message and asked the innkeeper to hit us back. I told him we’d be getting some lunch in the meantime, and would be standing by. We rode up a short ways to Uno’s. I had been there a few years before and remembered how nicely it was decorated. Rose and I shared a pizza overlooking the frozen lake tracked with snowmobile paths. I got a call from the innkeeper and he said he would leave our room open and place the key on the table if he wasn’t there when we got back. I thought I was in Mayberry. We rode back to the inn, wanting to ditch our luggage and do some exploring. The door was open, as promised, and we unpacked our things. We both noticed immediately, this was no ordinary motel room. The walls were painted a cozy green tone. The beds had quilts on them. There was a flat screen TV, wifi, and a nice frig. Everything was clean and inviting. It was actually more like a guest room in a house, and at $60/night, all the more reason to stay here. There was a bit of road noise later that night. But after a while, the rhythms of the vehicles passing by, produced a hypnotic-like tranquilizer, that placed me in deep REM sleep. Or maybe it was the Blue Moons from the watering hole across the street. We got back on the bike and headed out in search of a waterfall nearby. The back roads weren’t nearly as clean as the main ones and Nauti was getting dirtier with every turn. I’m so glad I washed her before our trip:/ We found the parking lot to Swallow Falls State Park. It was pretty much empty. We stopped at the bulletin board and plotted the trail we would need to take and ventured off. On the way, we met a couple, who asked us what kind of bike we were on, since we were still in our jackets. We all introduced ourselves and talked “motorcycles” for a bit, then went our separate ways. We were really endeared to them for being so nice. George and Loren were one of several impressions, making this trip very memorable. At the park, we walked down the snow covered path amidst the 300 year old hemlocks to the falls. They weren’t that tall, but the 20 or so foot sloped drop, hour glassing from the upper portion, made the water cascade and appear like it was boiling in a slanted cauldron. There was a large stone column down stream with trees growing on top of it, adding to the unique setting of this pristine place. The falls had a vertical rock wall on one side with snow covering most of its surface. I clenched and puckered just looking at it from below, because I knew I would be standing there at some point. Rose and I got some pics and stood arm in arm on the snow, breathing in the roaring, mist filled air. No one was there, except for

perhaps, wildlife that we couldn’t see. We kissed and hugged each other. It was another awesome day manifested by a machine ridden by two humans with an endless dream coming true. It was another Old Milwaukee moment, but we preferred Blue Moon. The rest of the evening was spent at the B&G across the street, enjoying beers and chatting with locals about bikes and the trips we’ve been on. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. I don’t believe in luck. I’ve often said, “Luck is for amateurs.” And finding a motel this nice, near a fantastic state park, in a great resort area, with a watering hole right across the street, is about as fortunate as one gets. I finally woke up at 1000 the next day. Between the late evening and the beating I took with the wind the day before, I had slept in. Maybe the brews had something to do with it, I’m not completely sure. We stopped at the Shawnee Trading Post a few miles away. They had some serious lawn art that I thought would make a cool background for a pic. I wondered how many letters were generated by HOAs because of this place. It was that obnoxiously over the top! Ask the giraffe. We stopped again, in Loch Lynn Heights for lunch. I got the meatloaf and Rose had a crab cake sandwich. We both had coffee and water. I went to pay the bill with my debit card and the nice waitress said they didn’t take plastic. I only had a twenty in my pocket, which is usually what a lunch for two costs, plus tip. I asked her how much it was. “Eleven seventy-five”, she replied. I reached for the bill and kept it movin’. Back on 48, I noticed some hesitation on the throttle on the climbs. Anything over half a twist resulted in some major lag. We pulled off in Baker and got some more gas and some carb cleaner additive. Heading over one of the passes, I saw a sedan approaching from the rear. It swiftly passed us on the left as the carb cleaner was showing no effect after 30 miles. The KIA emblem wasn’t helping matters either. It was just as well. The roads were a little too moist and chunky to be playing on anyway. We made it over another mountain and back home, without major issue. I didn’t mind getting passed by the Lincoln. We wouldn’t have had anything for him in the best of conditions anyway. Nauti was really struggling and I was concerned because I didn’t know exactly what was wrong with her. Fortunately, there is a shop where I work, and as I sit here typing, our mechanic diagnosed and fixed her vacuum pump in the carb. She’s been such a fine machine, one that chases and catches dreams. And I’m sure she’ll be back, passing pesky minivans in no time. Cheers and thanks for reading! Marc Ritchie “The Road Captain” Photo Credit to: Rose Grant

TECH TIP:Winterizing Your Bike By James Gilman, Love Lust Cycles
W
ell it’s safe to say that winter is here Playas. With a warmer than usual Christmas and a warm start to winter, the motorcycle Gods graced us with an extended riding season which I’m sure all of you took very good advantage of. For some of you 30 degree weather is when you draw the line of hoping on your bike to feel the frigid blast of cold wind in your hair. For others.........Ride on Playas! But if you are ready to hang up your helmet for a bit of a winter siesta then read up on how to get your baby settled in for her brief hibernation. This week I’m gonna walk you Playas through the necessary steps in winterizing your ride. I’m asked all the time what is the single important thing to do to in caring for a motorcycle and it’s simple, perform the needed preventative maintenance. An important preventive maintenance when the cold weather hits is the winterizing of your bike. If you think parking your ride in a heated garage is enough in safeguarding your bike in the colder temps, I’m here to tell you Playas you will be sadly disappointed come spring time when you’re ready to crank your baby up for that first ride. Winterizing your bike can help major unwanted surprises like exposed corrosion or rust spots, dead battery, hard starting, and saving you money from the several dollars it will cost to rebuild the carburetor and flush the tank.
be familiar to the needs of your ride.
The following steps is a general guideline of how to get your ride ready for its winter hibernation. As I always say Playas when in doubt check your service manual as it will always shed the needed wisdom on specifics of your bike. Read it, learn it, and
Storage The number one element that can prove detrimental to your ride during winter storage isn’t the cold weather but moisture. You must first decide how and where you plan on storing your bike. A covered location like a garage, storage unit, or covered pavilion is best for your bike. If you don’t have access to any of these types of storage contact your local Harley Davidson Dealership and ask them about their specials on winter storage. If you are left to leaving your baby out in the cold I suggest investing in a quality weatherproof motorcycle cover. I’m not talking about a tarp you can get at your local Harbor Freight but a high quality cover that will not only fight the elements but help keep the moisture out preventing corrosion and rusting. It’s
also important to tie down the cover if storing outside to prevent the cover from blowing off your bike. A good motorcycle cover is also good if you are storing it inside as it will safeguard your ride from dust and debris that can cause damage to the surface and to your paint. These days you can get custom waterproof covers catered to the year, make, and model of your bike or spend a little less and get a universal sized cover with an elastic bottom. Remember the point of covering your bike with a waterproof cover is to keep the moisture and elements from damaging your ride so make sure the cover fits over parts you want protected like your pipes Playas. Prior to storing your bike away it’s also a good idea to do some surface prep work like giving your ride a good detail. Giving your ride a good detail prior to storing it away may seem like a waste of time now but is good preventive maintenance. If you let bug guts and old water spots sit on your bike you will set up your baby and her pretty finish could get corroded permanently. Besides your bike deserves a good wash and detail after an extended riding season. Remember after giving her a good wash make sure to get rid of all moisture from the surface and all the nukes and crannies. You can use an electric leaf blower, high speed hair dryer or air hose to get into those hard to reach areas. Lastly add a coat of wax to help protect from moisture and rust. At the shop we like to use Lucas Slick Mist Wax. This is our go to wax in a bottle that gives showroom shine and acts as a barrier and protective coating. You can spray this shit on leather, chrome, and paint and it can be purchased at any auto parts store.
Changing the Oil and Filter Playas, change your oil and filter. Don’t leave your bike sitting with old, used, and broken down oil in its lubrication system. You owe it to your ride to leave her siting with fresh oil and on top of that use a weight that is appropriate for the winter like a 20/50w or 50w for the older models. A winter weight oil can help your startup be seamless come spring time. If your ride is going to be sitting for longer than 4 months I suggest you lube up your engines internals like your cylinder walls and pistons and protect them against rust from the winter air that produces a great deal of moisture. To do this first remove the spark plugs. Then inject a bit of engine oil in the holes and turn the engine over several times by putting the bike into gear and spinning the rear wheel. This will give the cylinder walls a good coat. Once you have done this a few times replace the spark plugs. Also don’t forget to change the transmission fluid and primary drive fluid.

Lubing Parts Basically any moving part on your bike needs a good lubing Playas prior to storing it away. This is to protect from moisture and ultimately from the parts from rusting and binding. Parts to lube include cables and anything with a grease fitting.
Fuel System Protect your gas tank from rusting and the fuel left in the tank by treating the fuel with Sta-Bil Fuel Stabilizer. You wanna do this on your last ride by adding the proper amount of fuel stabilizer then topping off the tank. Top off the tank to help keep moisture building on your tank’s walls. The stabilizer will mix in with the fuel after you topped off and will get a full run through the fuel system prior to storing. Make sure it’s ethanol friendly. If you’re a Gun Ho type of Playa you can also drain the tank and fuel system. Yes this is a more tedious effort. You will also need to treat the inside of your tank with a fogging oil to help defend against rusting but this method is recommended if you plan on storing your bike longer than 4 months.
The Battery Well you have two options when it comes to protecting your bike’s battery. You can either pull the battery from the bike prior to storage or hook your battery up to battery tender. With a battery tender the battery is kept topped off but without overcharging it which can leave you with a dead battery. If you plan on using a batter tender ensure the electrodes are free of debris and corrosion free by cleaning and applying a light coat of grease.
If you run water in your coolant system and temps get to below freezing you can risk getting a cracked head once the temps start to warm up and you go to crank up your bike. Last but most certainly not least is safeguarding your bike from pesky pests like mice, squirrels, and other rodents from helping themselves in staking a homestead in your bikes pips and air filters. You can do this by plugging up your pipes with an exhaust plug or stuff your air intake and exhaust with brightly colored plastic bags so you don’t forget to remove me when it’s time to fire up your bike. When it’s time to tuck your bike away for the winter, preventive maintenance like winterizing your bike is key in helping get your bike back to its full performance once spring hits. You can either take the “do it yourself” approach or take it to one of your local bike shops that can perform a winterizing service for you (good think you know a good mechanic, wink, wink). Performa a winterization preventive maintenance, stabilize your bike, check on her once in a while, and in no time spring will be here and she will be ready to go and Burn Out Playas! About the Author James is the co-owner of Love Lust Cycles located in Beltsville MD and is a factory-trained, Master Technician with over 20 years’ experience. James decided long ago after being at the mercy of vendors and companies to “Master” all aspects of the motorcycle and maintain top quality work in house doing it himself. James wants to remind all of you to, “Keep the rubber on the ground and the wind in your face Playa”
Tires To help protect your tires while in storage get the tires up off the ground by using motorcycle stands. Over time your tires can start to develop flat spots if left in the same position. If you don’t have motorcycle stands get the rear tire off the ground or remember to rotate your tires every couple of weeks to get them sitting in a different position. If your bike is stored in an area with concrete floors place a piece of plywood or a piece of carpet to help keep moisture for entering into the tires.
Anti-Freeze/ Coolant If you’re storing in temps that have below freezing weather make sure to check your levels of anti-freeze in your coolant system. DO NOT RUN WATER IN YOUR COOLANT SYSTEM!!! Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

orld War I had a dramatic effect on the motorcycle industry, but just as the war had successfully thrust the industry ahead by leaps and bounds, the post war economy would prove to be detrimental to the motorcycle world and its advancement. To fully understand the effects the post war economy had on the industry, we must first fully grasp the situation the United States was in following the success of WWI. Several years into America’s post war era, the financial integrity of our country would collapse. October 24, 1929 would forever become known as Black Thursday, the day stocks plummeted and banks began calling in loans…the beginning of the Great Depression. By midNovember an estimated $30 billion in stock values had all but disappeared. By March 1930 more than 3.2 million people are unemployed. In December 1931 New York’s Bank of the United States collapses while holding over $200 million in deposits, making it the largest single bank failure in American history. Nationwide conditions continued to break down and US citizens suffered greatly until the Second World War, when things finally began to turn around for the United States. So what happened to our beloved two-wheeled lifestyle during the chaos of the Great Depression? Following the stock market crash, motorcycle sales in the United States plummeted. We will revisit a few key players from previous segments, and see where they end up by the end of this devastating era in American history. The first victim of the Great Depression was Excelsior. Excelsior was operating successfully during the war, and consistently filling orders. The Super X was making the company money, and things were good. Previously purchased by the bicycle guru known as Schwinn, it seemed Excelsior would be a household name for years to come. So imagine the surprise to everyone when Schwinn called his department heads together for a meeting on a summer day in 1931 and announced, without any prior warning, that the company would be closing its doors. It was said he stated very bluntly, “Gentleman, today we stop.” I can imagine the shock, that despite a full order book, Schwinn chose to cease motorcycle production…Excelsior closed its
1932 Servi-Car doors in September of 1931. Triumph, though located on the other side of the pond, was also greatly affected by the post war economy. In 1929 Triumph sold its German subsidiary as a separate, independently owned company that would later merge with the Adler Company to create the Triumph-Adler Company. In 1932 Triumph sold another branch of its company (the bicycle production portion) to the Raleigh Bicycle Company; by this time Triumph is struggling financially to stay afloat. By 1936 motorcycle operations are faring better due to the acquisition of Jack Sangster. Sangster formed the Triumph Engineering Company LTD, and with the help of Edward Turner designed the Triumph Speed Twin (500 cc) in 1937. This engine became the basis for all Triumph Twins until the 1980’s, and kept Triumph from dissolving completely during the Great Depression. Though the company survived by the skin of its teeth, it did not emerge unscathed, but rather as bits and pieces of its former self…so in the famous words of Freddie Mercury… another one bites the dust. Indian Motorcycles on the other hand, maintained a respectable success rate following WWI. Triumph-Speed twin During the Great Depression, Indian did not claim rights to

any extraordinary advancement in the motorcycle world, but instead turned its focus towards styling updates and cosmetic improvements with the hopes of maintaining customer interest in the face of declining sales. Who doesn’t love a pretty face?? In 1932 Indian introduced skirted fenders, a long graceful chain guard, as well as a saddle tank that hid the frame… this foretold the profile of the “modern” motorcycle. In 1934 Indian chose a streamlined, automotive styling to its model line. Lightly valanced fenders were given deeper side panels, and two-tone paint schemes became available on most models. The only American motorcycle company to continue to introduce advancements during the post war years was Harley Davidson. In 1922, the new 74 cubic inch (1212 cc) V-Twin was completed. Harley introduced the “teardrop” gas tank in 1925; 1928 brought about the addition of a front brake, but notably only on the J/JD models. In 1929, the 45 cubic inch (737 cc) Flathead V-Twin was announced. The Flathead was designed to compete with the Indian 101 Scout and the Excelsior Super X…this was the “D” model, and remained in production until 1931. Indian riders referred to the “D” model as the “3 cylinder Harley” because the generator was upright and parallel to the front cylinder. The Great Depression was in full swing only a few short months after the release of the Flathead V-Twin, and with it came a dramatic drop in sales. Harley Davidson sales in the United States fell from 21,000 in 1929 to a meager 3,703 in 1933. In the face of such loss, Harley did not back down. The company instead raised a proud middle finger to the economy and waved it for all to see…unveiling a new line up for 1934 that included a Flathead engine and art deco styling. In order to survive the remainder of the depression, Harley supplemented their income by producing industrial power plants based on their motorcycle engines. They also designed and built a 3 wheeled delivery vehicle called the “Servi-car”, which incidentally remained in production until 1973. The Servi-car became a mainstay of small businesses, vendors, and delivery drivers for decades Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic
to come. As if Harley hadn’t done enough in such difficult Postal Service times, they also added the 80 servi-car cubic inch (1300 cc) Flathead to their line in 1935; 1936 brought more changes to the industry with Harley’s announcement of the 61E and 61EL models. These models boasted the Knucklehead OHV engines, and by the end of the first year of production these babies had been road tested and improved upon as well. By 1937 Harley had equipped all Flatheads with the same type of dry-sump oil recirculation systems introduced on the Knucklehead OHVs. The revised 74 cubic inch V and VL models were renamed U and UL; the 45 cubic inch R model became the W, while the 80 cubic inch VH and VHL were renamed UH and UHL. During the course of the Great Depression, Indian and Harley Davidson began a long-lived and well known rivalry that continued until Indian closed its doors in 1953. Despite the hardships cast upon the United States after the First World War, Indian and Harley Davidson survived…they were the only two American motorcycle companies left standing. But why did they succeed where others did not? Their survival is due in part to having strong dealer networks, continued product use by the military, police, and postal services, as well as strong exports to Canada and Europe… combined, and these factors allowed them to weather the economic disaster that followed WWI. September 1, 1939 brought about the start of WWII. The war in essence turns around the American economy and brings an end to the Great Depression… and with the Second World War comes yet another section of motorcycle history to uncover. All of the ten senior members of the Board of Directors of the company were called into the Chairman’s office one by one until only Bob, the junior member, was left sitting outside. Finally it was his turn to be summoned. He entered the office to find the chairman and the ten other directors seated around a table. He was invited to join them, which he did. As soon as he had sat down the chairman turned to Bob looking him squarely in the eye, and with a stern voice, asked, “Have you ever had sex with Ms. Foyt, my Secretary?” “Oh, no sir, positively not!” Bob replied. “Are you absolutely sure?” asked the chairman “Honest, I’ve never been close enough to even touch her!” “You’d swear to that?” “Yes, I swear I’ve never had sex with Ms. Foyt anytime, anywhere.” “Good, then by process of elimination; you’re the one that needs to fire her. Booger died in a fire and his body was burned apparently beyond recognition. The morgue needed someone to identify the body, so they sent for his two best friends, Cooter and Gomer. The three men had always done everything together. Cooter arrived first, and when the Mortician pulled back the sheet, Cooter said, ‘Yup, his face is burned up pretty bad. You better roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Cooter said, ‘Nope, aint Booger.’ The Mortician thought this was rather strange. So, he brought Gomer in to confirm the identity of the body. Gomer looked at the body and said, ‘Yup, he’s pretty well burnt up. Roll him over.’ The Mortician rolled him over and Gomer said, ‘No, that can’t be Booger ‘ The mortician asked, ‘How can you tell?’ Gomer said, ‘Well, Booger had two buttholes.’ ‘What? He had two buttholes!!?’ exclaimed the Mortician. ‘Yup, we never seen ‘em, but everywhere we went, everybody always used to say: ‘There’s Booger with the two buttholes.’

So I finally landed a job as a Smart-Mart Greeter, which is a good find for many retirees, unfortunately I lasted less than a day. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Per my greeter training manual I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Smart-Mart.” “Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The ugly woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they aint twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you need glasses, or are you just plain stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither in need of glasses nor stupid, madam. I just literally could not believe someone actually slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at SmartMart.” My supervisor said I probably wasn’t cut out for this line of work. I think I’ll try the mattress store that just opened up down the road. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW LEGISLATION Along with the new year comes an onslaught of new legislation, as new legislative sessions across the nation consider a myriad of motorcycle laws such as helmet legislation in ARIZONA that would charge riders a fee to ride without one. Prefiled on January 6, 2016, H.B. 2052 introduced by State Representative Dr. Randall Friese (D-Tucson) would modify their Under-18 helmet law to read; “An operator or passenger of a motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle or motor driven cycle who is at least eighteen years of age is exempt from the helmet requirement if the owner pays a (as yet undetermined) fee when registering their vehicle.” “A person who violates this section is subject to a civil penalty of five hundred dollars,” and a ‘portion’ of the fees collected from the pay-to-play p-pot plot would be “deposited in the Spinal and Head Injuries Trust Fund.” Meanwhile, in INDIANA S.B. 157 would “eliminate the portion of the motorcycle registration fee that is currently distributed to the spinal cord and brain injury fund.” MISSOURI is considering numerous motorcycle-related bills, including seven helmet bills; one would repeal the law for anyone 18 or over (HB1663), another would exempt motorcyclists 21 or older from wearing a helmet if they have appropriate health insurance coverage (HB1464), one “Prohibits law enforcement from stopping a motorcycle for failing to wear protective headgear” (HB1957), while (HB1371) treats the infraction as a secondary offense, requiring another reason to pull a rider over, and four separate bills concern autocycles and primarily exempts certain operators of motorcycles and motortricycles from wearing protective headgear (SB659, SB694, SB851 & SB1732). Three-wheelers are of concern in several states, as legislatures struggle with defining and regulating “autocycles,” and in KANSAS House Bill 2436 would allow persons to take a motorcycle license driving exam on a 3-wheeled motorcycle and would restrict such licenses to trikes. In NEW HAMPSHIRE, as in some other states, the state legislature will consider HB 1308 to allow motorcycles to travel between lanes of traffic in certain instances, a.k.a.; lane-splitting. HB1347 would “establish a committee to study sharing the road with bicycles and motorcycles.” Also in the Granite State, Senator Andrew Hosmer, a Democrat from Laconia, has introduced SB 360 to repeal the statute restricting handlebar height and Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic
legalize so-called “ape-hangers”. New Hampshire is currently among more 11/1/11 5:06 PM than 30 states that limit the height of motorcycle handlebars. Since 1967, existing statute prohibits handlebar grips “higher than the shoulder level of the driver when in the seat or saddle” and also prohibits riding a motorcycle with “improvised, defective, or repaired handlebars.” “I applaud Senator Hosmer for sponsoring this bill,” said Charlie St. Clair, executive director of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association. “I have never heard the height of handlebars presented as a safety issue,” he told the Laconia Daily Sun. “There is no history of accidents caused by high bars.” Without a federal standard, the regulation of handlebars on motorcycles rests with the states. Currently, 12 states limit the height of handlebars to 15 inches above the saddle. 5 others require the handlebars to be below the height of the shoulder. Last summer, South Dakota, which hosts the annual Sturgis Rally became the most recent state to repeal its shoulder level statute. SHARE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR STATE “At our annual NCOM board meeting in November, the board discussed what information would be beneficial to share with attendees at our annual NCOM Convention in May,” says NCOM Board & Legislative Task Force member Annette Torrez, who is also chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO), adding that “We decided on a session on state legislative victories and defeats. We all face similar and different issues in each state during our legislative sessions, and by sharing the outcomes on bills that were sponsored, passed, failed and the details, we can learn from each other. By the sharing of information we may be able to advance many of the same victories or avoid the pitfalls faced.” The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) welcomes your input, and encourages you to share your information with Annette Torrez at atorrez2@ msn.com (505) 730-0435 and/or NCOM Board Member John Bilotta, also Operations Director of ABATE of Virginia, at abateregion3@yahoo.com.
