Be Yourself
we reap what we sow. If we sow God’s Word into our hearts then we will reap the blessings—salvation, deliverance, peace, healing, redemption, and prosperity—many blessings. If we sow what the devil and world tells us—then we will reap those things— condemnation, guilt, shame, confusion, insecurity— many curses.
God wants you to accept yourself and to like who you are! Does that statement sound so hard to do? Wouldn’t you like the freedom just to be accepted as you are, without having to put on airs and without pressure to be someone you aren’t? God accepts you as you are. The devil wants to steal selfconfidence from you. He tries to make you “feel” that you don’t “measure up” in one way or another. Thank God that we are “measured” by His standards, and not the worlds! The opinion you have of yourself affects all your relationships— with God and other people. Many times people can’t keep good friendships because they don’t even like themselves—so why should anyone else! You can keep striving to make things better in your life by your “good works”. Many people depend on their “good works” to outweigh their “bad works”, and thereby make it into heaven when the time comes.
God can and will use us as we are. He will train and equip us to help us overcome areas that we are weak in. God says that He uses the weak things of the world to confound the wise. You don’t have to be something or someone your not! God will mold you into what He wants you to be. You just have to be pliable. Our worth and value is not in what we are—but who we are in Christ Jesus. Once we learn to accept ourselves and come to peace with ourselves then we will begin to come to peace with other people. As you apply God’s Bible based principles in your life—you will be able to overcome any insecurities you may have and learn to succeed at being yourself and like yourself in the process.
But God says our “works” will not earn us anything. It is by acceptance through faith of God’s Son Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. We are saved by grace through faith. Salvation is a FREE gift to us because of God’s love for us—we just need to receive it!
Begin to speak what God says about you—not the negative things you may “feel” about yourself. God works by faith—the devil works with feelings!
2 Cor. 5:21 says that Jesus actually became sin on the cross for you and I, so that through Him we might become the righteousness of God. You need to believe God when He tells you this! He will NEVER lie to you. But the devil will lie, steal and deceive you. Don’t allow the devil to pull you down to his level. He is the master at deception. It’s your choice whom you believe!
Focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses!
We don’t succeed by works—but we do have to be obedient to do what God says. There IS a difference! The Bible says that

When you know how much God loves you—you will learn to like and love yourself. Become rooted and grounded in God’s love so you will be at peace and succeed at being yourself.

The Maryland Legislative Session is in full swing and the Members of ABATE of Maryland, Inc., have been busy in Annapolis attending meetings, Bill hearings, and walking the halls on Monday nights to lobby our legislators. Members of ABATE of Maryland, Inc., joined Members of the Maryland COC on February 10th for the hearing on Senate Bill SB 233, Motorcycle Profiling. I would like to thank all that came out to support the bill. Our members also came out on February 18th to show their support for House Bill (HB) 559, the Helmet Modification Bill. ABATE of Maryland, Inc., has also been working to oppose some other bills, Senate Bill 164, if passed will put age restrictions on Motorcycle Passengers. No child under the age of 10 years old, would be able to ride as a passenger on a motorcycle and children under the age of 12 would have to be able to reach the footrests.
We are also looking into a bill about Autocycles. Supporters of this bill want to classify auto cycles as a motorcycle. So as you can see, ABATE has been busy, but again this is what we do, we lobby for bills that are favorable to motorcyclists and fight those that infringe on our freedom. We meet at the ABATE office every Monday night until the last session night in April at 5:30pm. I
know no one wants to talk about winter now that spring is right around the corner, but let me do a quick flashback to that terrible blizzard we had back in January. Some of us saw three feet of snow and were snowed in for days. I only had one concern the entire time: my motorcycle! I don’t have a garage so when I bought my bike two years ago I also bought an awesome little product called the CycleShell Enclosure. If you’re not sure what that it is, it’s exactly what you would think it is. It’s a platform that you can pull your bike onto and a very durable piece of fabric cover closes over your bike. It’s the same fabric that’s used for boat covers so you know it’s tough! You can pull the bike into the enclosure and close it up the second you turn off your bike. It has room to run a cord through if you need to hook up a battery tender as well. It keeps out all of the outside elements, even dust and dirt! I’ve seen it stand its ground during high winds, heavy rain, hail, and even snow up to 8 inches. I hadn’t seen what it could do during a blizzard though. I was worried but I should have known to have faith. Upon checking the bike when the blizzard was over, I was a little worried. The top was caving in and the sides also appeared to be collapsing in as they were being drowned in snow. However, when I finally was able to get out there and clean it off and around it…it all bounced back to where it was supposed to be and more importantly, my bike was fine! It seems these days you can’t find a good product like this and I knew that I had made a great investment after that blizzard. What’s even more awesome is that the owner/creator of the company, Mark Cooper, is a down to earth biker just like you and me and gives awesome customer service. You talk to him directly and he makes sure you are getting the correct size and even helps you save money in shipping. I was fortunate enough to do a phone interview with him and I quickly learned that he is not only a smart dude for coming up with this product but he started from the ground up and his persistence, hard work, and belief in himself allowed him the success he has today. He’d love to hear from you! Me: I appreciate you doing this interview with me. Mark: Oh certainly! I’m happy to. So you’ve had my CycleShell for a couple of years now, haven’t you? Me: Yeah. Two years and after this blizzard that we had last month, I was amazed! Mark: Oh, fantastic! Me: I woke up the next morning and it was covered in snow, you know on the front, on the top, it was caving in a little bit. I went out there and knocked the snow off and it just popped right back into position and the bike is fine. I was like, I gotta talk to this company! Mark: Well good! That’s what it’s all about! What kind of bike do you have? Me: I have right now, I just bought a 2014 Kawasaki Vulcan. What kind of bike do you have? You said you have a few bikes? Mark: Yeah. I do everything. I do street riding, I do dual purpose. I do dirt biking so. I got my street bike. I got a Suzuki 1250 Bandit, which is a nice bike, especially in Colorado because, you know, I’ll 14
get out with my buddies and we can ride like 2 or 300 miles in a day. So, it’s a comfortable seated bike, and it’s not like a sport bike but it still has a lot of performance and the features of a sport bike. Me: I can’t do the dirt bikes. My brother has one and he let me ride it and it’s so uncomfortable. Mark: Yeah, I started out when I was a kid so I’ve always been involved with motorcycles. I started riding dirt bikes when I was about 13. Me: Nice! Now, let’s get into your product a little bit. The Cycle Shell Enclosure. You’re the creator of it. This was your idea? Mark: It is my idea and I came up with the concept in 1992. I was moving into an apartment at the time down in Phoenix, Arizona and I had a motorcycle with me and I had moved maybe 4 to 5 times in four years and every time I moved, I’d go down and rent a storage locker. You know, it would cost me like $80 or $100 a month. I was moving in this apartment and I was sitting on my couch and I’m thinking “well I guess I gotta go down and find a place for this motorcycle.” And then the whole concept came to me. I immediately ran down to the University of Arizona and I got an artist and I did a conceptual drawing and I took it around to some dealerships and everybody was like, “Oh yeah, that’s really nice. Whenever you get this together, let me know.” So it took me about four years to design it and get all my engineering and all my materials and so forth for manufacturing in line. In 1997, I quit my job and I started doing this full time. Me: Awesome! Mark: I started in my basement. Me: Nice! Mark: And I have not looked back since. I’ve been manufacturing since 1997 but I’m no longer manufacturing in my basement but that’s where I started! Me: You gotta start somewhere! Mark: So the whole concept, well you have it now, I wanted a full closure. I wanted the bike to be completely surrounded, parked off of the ground, and collapsible so it could be easily portable so a person could take it with them when they move. Me: When I was looking around, I had never even heard of your company and I was trying to find something because I don’t have a garage. I was looking around and I saw someone on Facebook or one of those social websites had said something about the CycleShell so

I looked you up and then I started looking at your competitors. And I always came back to you because of that platform. It’s not sitting on the ground. I saw one that was just sitting on a soft piece of plastic. The design is amazing. I like that it’s got that solid platform and it’s got holes so you can run a wire if you need to hook up your battery tender. Mark: Exactly. Me: It’s amazing! Mark: I think about, it was about four or five years after I started manufacturing, some competitor’s came out and I’m a patented product. I was awarded that in 2002. But you started seeing things coming out. One of them was the bike barn. Their manufactured, I believe in Korea and their distributed through Canada and they call themselves a non-contact cover. So they don’t use a platform. All it is a plain structure with a cheap fabric on it. It doesn’t seal the motorcycle up completely. You still get a lot of dirt and debris entering in from the bottom and I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the cover will not go over a motorcycle. Me: Right (This was actually one of the products I had researched and thought it looked fairly cheap). Mark: But any case, I’m American made. I use nothing but American-made products in my product. My fabric, for example, I get from a mill, one of the last mills here in the United States called Granite Hill, South Carolina. They use this fabric to make boat covers so it’s a really high quality, year-round, out-door material. All my parts, like I said, are from different places here in the United States. My base is currently manufactured in Indiana. I’ve always tried to maintain the quality of my product. My philosophy is always to make the highest quality product as possible and let the product speak for itself and that’s really what had happened with my company. Me: It really does. And they are hand-made right? Mark: Yeah. It is completely hand-made. I buy all raw materials and we just cut, and form, and punch, and make a CycleShell! Me: So about how long does it take to make one, would you say? Mark: Completely, from start to finish, making all the parts, I’d say about two hours. Me: Okay. That’s not bad. Do you have a lot of people working for you? Mark: Right now I’ve got five people and I’m still behind. I’m always behind. I think labor is my biggest, biggest issue in manufacturing. I don’t know, people have different attitudes about working today. Me: That’s true! I’m 37 and I’m running circles around people who are half my age. Mark: I know! I’m in my 50’s and I work harder than some of these guys. I’ll hire someone who’s 22 and I’ll run circles around him. Me: Yeah! I don’t get it. Mark: You know, especially here in Colorado, too. You know we have the liberal drug laws here so…I tell everybody, “look, I don’t care what you do in your private life but don’t bring any of your drugs into my company. Like I mentioned, I’ve been making my product since 1997 and northeast is probably my biggest market. I’m always shipping anywhere from Boston down to, like Richmond, VA, a lot in Florida. I think the northeast is my biggest market. Me: Yeah, we got all the crazy weather. Mark: The weather, yeah. It’s amazing too, Joyce, because when I first started making my product, you know, I thought I was going to sell mostly to people living in apartments and condos and it turned out that my biggest market is somebody with a house and a two car garage. Me: Really?! Mark: Oh yeah! Because, you take somebody with a two car garage and they have 2 cars, they have a motorcycle, they have a riding mower, they got bicycles, and junk and they just don’t have room for that motorcycle. Or the wife, the guy’s wife is saying, or the husband, is saying “you know if you get that motorcycle out of the garage, I could put my car back.” Me: Oh no! Mark: So they’ll buy my enclosure and sit it on the side of the house. Me: I would have to get a divorce! I’d say, sorry, we’re done then! Mark: So it’s turned out completely opposite. So a homeowner with a two-car garage is my biggest market. Me: Wow! Mark: Are you living in an apartment or a house? Me: No, I live in a house but we don’t have a garage here. Mark: Oh okay. There you go. Me: If I did have a garage, I’d probably still use the CycleShell and put the CycleShell in the garage and park the bike in it! Mark: Yeah! A lot of people do that. It keeps the pets away, the trash away, and keeps the dust off their bike. Me: I read online, it talks about cleaning the cover with a silicone protectant? I’m having a really hard time finding that for some reason. Mark: Look up a product called 303 Aerospace. I know you can buy it online or if you go to Walmart, back in the automotive section, you’re going to find a product called Super Protectant. It’s in a green bottle. The manufacture of the fabric, they recommend using a silicone and not a petroleum-based protectant. Like Armor All is made from oil so they don’t want you using that. Me: Okay, yeah I need to give mine a good cleaning. It’s getting dirty. Do you have a busy time of the year where you get more orders in, than at other times? Mark: Uh, actually in the spring or early summer is my busiest time. Guys buy new bikes and I think what happens is a lot of people go out and they buy a motorcycle and they bring it home and their like, “Oh gosh, where am I going to put this?” Or, you know, they spend 10, 12, 15 thousand dollars for a bike and they want to protect it better than just throwing a cover over it. So I start getting really busy in March when people start buying new bikes. Me: I got mine in April so that makes sense. Mark: Exactly! I’m always surprised though like in January, I always think it will be a slow time but I stay pretty busy in January too. Um, I think my slowest time is around like, August. Me: That’s a good time to get out and ride then! Mark: I’ve maintained the pricing of my product since 2001. I have not changed it since then. Me: And the pricing is, I mean, I think, It’s $325 - $425, depending on the size of your bike, I think that’s amazing and it’s worth it! Mark: It really is. And I’ve done everything that I can to maintain that cost. My biggest problem with everybody that I talk to is the shipping. I have to ship in freight. I can’t ship just ground. It’s a pretty big-sized box and I can offer my customers to either ship to a business or to their residence. If I ship to a business there’s a $30 savings so I try to encourage people to ship to a business and save $30 on shipping. Me: That’s what I did. I had it shipped to my part-time job because

I live right around the corner and when it got there they were like, “You need to come get this! It’s really big and we have nowhere to put it! Mark: Where you able to get it home after you picked it up? Me: Yeah! Mark: Yeah, so you just took it out of the box and put it up? Me: Yeah. It was so simple and easy, I couldn’t believe it. Mark: Yeah, that’s the whole concept. Make it easy and simple for people and it’s been really great. Me: It’s hard to find good products like yours and another thing that I really liked is that when you order one, you have to call and talk to you. You can’t fill out an order-form on line and be done with it. Mark: I know! I get a lot of people, they’ll say to me, “Why can’t I order this on-line?” I want you to call me and I want to make sure, first of all, that you’re getting the correct size for your motorcycle because, like a guy with a Harley sportster, they’ll call me up and say, “I’d like to order a CycleShell.” I’ll ask them what kind of bike they have and they say they have a sportster. Well, that means you need a medium size for a cruiser size. Or people will put accessories on the bike, like maybe ape hangers or something, and you know, I don’t want to ship a $100 shipping to someone in Maryland and guess what it doesn’t fit and their shipping it back, and then I’m reshipping it so. I like the personal contact with people, to talk and to get to know them and just taking the time and taking orders and giving them that customer service. Me: That’s, like I said, another thing I like. Because, a lot of companies, you want to order something and you got to do it online

or through a recording and you can’t get a hold of someone and when you do get a hold of someone, they gotta take a message because they can’t help you and I really like the one-on-one and you know you’re getting a good product. Mark: Well good! Yeah! I hope people do appreciate that. That’s what I want. I want people to be able to call me and talk to me and I’ll always take time and spend time talking with people. You know, I don’t try to do a hard sell call or anything. I just answer people’s questions and I know their gonna love my product. And I offer a satisfaction guarantee and I put a year warranty on it also. Even still, if you have any trouble with my product, you just call me up and I’m going to be there for you to help you. Me: Right! That’s why I’m doing this article because, like I said, you can’t find companies like this anymore these days. Mark: Well good thank you so much! Me: You’re welcome! Is there anything else you want to add? Mark: Let’s see, what would be good? Tell everybody to call me up and I’ll sell them a CycleShell and they’ll love it! Me: Yup, they will! MCV (Motorcycle Club Five) is a “family oriented” motorcycle club based in Reisterstown, Maryland, with a wide range of members throughout Baltimore, Harford and Carroll Counties. We ride hard, with club rides every week, year round, and some members rack up over 15,000 miles per year. Primarily we ride Harleys, but Hondas, Victory’s and BMWs are also in the mix; and guests are welcome on most rides. We can be found on Thursday nights at the Full Moon Pub and Grill, having a few beers and laughs or planning the next ride. MCV began charitable projects in 2010 with a Christmas drive for an Army unit in Iraq. The following year, “Operation MCVcares” raised about $5,000 for another Army unit stationed in Afghanistan. Club members, spouses and SOs got involved, and we focused fundraising on events that were fun for our members and guests. We also formed MCVcares, Inc. as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. “Spring Fling” rides (up to 300 participants) with full bar-b-que lunches, Demo Derby challenges, eBay sales, wheelbarrow of cheer raffles and a huge “Thanks-for-Giving” party each November became MCVcares’ fundraising activities. In 2012 we donated $5,000 to Hannah More School (for students with behavioral disabilities) and thrilled the students when six Harleys roared into their school gym to present the check at an assembly. The following year, we donated $10,000 to the Living Classroom’s “Fresh Start” Program. Fresh Start helps young people in recovery (i.e., fighting addiction) or with juvenile criminal histories get their lives back on track with educational and vocational programs, in downtown Baltimore. Starting in 2014, MCVcares formed a partnership with Northwest Hospital’s Breast Care Center, to create the MCVcares Breast Cancer Support Fund. This Fund benefits patients with financial needs, undergoing treatment and recovery at the Breast Care Center. 100% of the MCVcares donation will directly help these patients. In the last two years we donated over $50,000 (total) to the Breast Cancer Support Fund and we are already working on 2016 projects to continue this support. Breast cancer has affected the lives of many of our members, friends and their families, so we have received strong support from the community and other motorcycle clubs in the area. Last year, our Thanks-for-Giving Party included over 350 guests who enjoyed music, food and drink, Chinese

auctions, prizes, friends and fun. The TFG party was held at the Gamber Fire Hall in Finksburg, MD. Our first 2016 event is the “Spring Fling” motorcycle ride on May 7th (to Lake Redman, near York, PA) for over 300 members and guests. All of our events are open to the public and are widely advertised online and in the community. We support charitable rides and activities hosted by other MCs throughout the year. There is a lot of respect and appreciation between MCs involved in different charitable causes and we enjoy all the rides and events hosted by our brothers and sisters of the road. It’s a great way to join up and do some rides together. MCV and MCVcares have grown substantially over the last six (6) years. Fivers (members) and spouses number over 130 and represent a wide range of businesses, public services and professionals in our community, who serve as volunteers for all MCVcares activities. We work hard to give our sponsors and donors great value and public recognition, and we try to support those who support us. RIDE FOR BOOBIES
M
y Pillion got the confirmation that the procedure for enhancing her daughter-in-law’s sweater meat, I mean flesh puppies, wet T-shirt bait, milk mounds, call them what you will, many refer to them as tits, I mean BOOBS,,,was a go. Fewer words have seldom grabbed the attention of the male species with more interest. The letters are found on some the most unsuspecting canvases, including marker boards in hospital rooms of friends of mine who’ve had accidents or surgery, that haven’t noticed the Sharpie deviously in use. It looks pretty silly between blood pressure and temperature figures. I’ve even had to investigate the word being scribed on the dusty window of a corporate building, from the office of an executive, of a firm I used to provide security for. That was an awkward phone call to take from the EA. “Can you please send someone to investigate some graffiti on my boss’s window?” Believe it or not, I had nothing to do with it, but it was extremely hilarious. Anyway, this is a motorcycle story after all. We were volunteering to babysit their two kids for three days, 350 miles away. Normally, we would take back roads, but with that kind of mileage involved, highways would need to be incorporated to cover the distance. This meant highway 81. Now, I’m a fan of racing at Talladega, but not when it comes to riding on highways. Riding side-by-side in perfect formation for miles, because some Bogart can’t share the road, is not my idea of fun. Traffic was light until we reached Harrisonburg. With all of the on ramps, things started to congest a bit and we found ourselves in a typical I-81 restart, only there was no green flag. To anyone who covers hundreds of miles in a ride, it’s suffocating. I did my best to sit it out, but when I saw an opportunity to pass the Flintstone mobile, I wrenched Nauti’s throttle and dipped into the right lane. Her new piston vac ensured only just enough air mixed with the fuel, lurching her past Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty with room to spare. I thought about performing the pedal dance, but skills like theirs, have taken years to develop. And my little gesture would likely have little effect. Exiting on I-64 was refreshing. It was like night turning into day. The
hustle-bustle chaos-like dance with trucks was soon washed away in favor of open tarmac. I thought I was on Rt. 55, the almost “Ghost Highway”, to the north in WV. The mountains were spectacular, and the views were magnificent. So too, was the amount of gas Nauti was chugging. At just over 100 miles, I had to twist the reserved valve. She’s been running a little rich ever since her carb work and doesn’t get the mileage she used to, especially running 80 on the highways. But man does she run and sound some kinda sweet! The next stop was just past Beckley, WV. We topped off and headed across the street to a Wendys for some quick lunch only to find a line 10 deep at the corral. I said to Rose, “We’d have quicker service being waited on across the street.” So, across the street we went, where we could sit and get waited on and relax a bit without having to stand in line. After all, we had all day to get there, and there wasn’t any rush, except for what was playing on my phone. The next leg of the highway heading to Charleston, was like I-81 on steroids. It had all of the two-wide traffic, including trucks, only this time, there were curves along with the hills. Don’t get me wrong. I found it immensely fun and challenging at the same time. I kept waiting for the traffic to be stopped somewhere around one of the next bends, hoping it wasn’t on a right hander in the left lane with a truck next to me that was obscuring my view of the road ahead. The traffic, fortunately, kept moving, and at a spirited pace. I kept thinking to myself, “There’s no way, this many vehicles can drive this fast on this type of highway.” But they did. And obviously, they do it every day, and everyone seemed to get it, like they realized being a jackass on roads like these wasn’t the smart thing to do. And it would come at a heavy price should they F up, or cause someone else to. We finally reached the Kanawha River, having survived some of the most intense highway motorcycling I’ve ever experienced, outside of snow. The ride soon took on a new flavor, like dessert after a meal. The white knuckle 80 mph sweepers with trucks, were replaced with

LCpl Christopher Johnson is the perfect example of the generation of warriors in the period that is often described as the Global War on Terror (GWOT) or simply Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. He belongs to many brotherhoods: Veteran; US Marine; Combat Wounded. Chris was born the 9th of May 1984 to Dean and Kathy Johnson of Columbia, Pennsylvania. He was the product of rural America where people are relieved of the hustle and bustle of city-life. He hunted; he fished. He hung out with his friends; he snuck out for good times with those friends. Like many kids his age he found a little trouble as he lived life and the 2002 Penn Manor High School graduate turned to the Marines to find direction. In the Marines he found that direction, that purpose, and a brotherhood.
E, 2 Battalion, 2nd Marines deployed to Kuwait and by mid-month, they were in Baghdad. “We…got the word that Fallujah was kicking up,” he said. Indeed Fallujah was getting kinetic, the phrase we used to make war sound more scientific. On the 31st of March 2004, four Blackwater contractors were killed, bodies burned, and their corpses hung from a bridge. In the warzone of Iraq, Fallujah just became its own warzone. Chris and his squad-mates were headed to the most dangerous place on earth at that time. Iraq summer days are hot and the structures hold the heat well into the night. You spend as much of the night sweating as sleeping. The night and morning of the day Chris was wounded was no different. Fresh, clean clothes are a memory. A bed and a real hot meal are things for another time. Your mind finds a focus in combat. Your gear and your weapon become an extension of your body. Your senses, your gut, your hunches are just as valuable as any intelligence platform provided for you by higher echelons.
Chris joined the Marines during a time of war. He joined the Marines—he was going to war. War came on the 2nd of March 2004. His unit, Company You eat in your gear, that’s your table. When the order comes, you tighten your vest and shoulder your gear. Often as the day goes on and the heat rises, it feels tight against your chest. You’ve become used to the weight but your back is still sore. Alleyways. Rooftops. Windows. Doors. Don’t walk in the open. Don’t hug the wall. Cover your sector. Do 32 MARCH 2016
The snap and the sizzle are the sounds of bullets and those sounds tell you about the bullets and their proximity to your position. The fact that you hear them is often used described as a good thing—you don’t hear the one that gets you. On Sunday, the 20th of June 2004, Lance Corporal Christopher Johnson was hit in the arm by machine gun fire when his squad of Marines was ambushed by enemy fighters near Fallujah, Iraq and in that second the world changed. Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) has developed and changed over time. Its focus however was always about preventing death from treatable wounds through techniques learned in centuries of combat. Simplifying the actions taken, you stop the bleeding. Today, the phrase that often used is, “If we can get to you, we can save you.” Tourniquets and chemical clotting agents stop the bleeding and a world class evacuation system can take a casualty from the point of injury to world class medical care in tens of minutes. This is where the challenge begins. The world class care saves the human but sometimes at the cost of the person. Sometimes these visible and invisible wounds take years to eventually claim the life of their victim. It’s this part of the story that brings bikers from Maryland and Pennsylvania on 19 March 2016 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ hall in Millersville, PA to make no life lost in service of this nation be done in vain. Chris’s squad mates did save him. The bonds of brotherhood did not fail him that day. They evacuated him to a trauma care center in Iraq. He was further stabilized at that trauma center. He was evacuated from Iraq to Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD through Landstuhl, Germany. He would live. The system worked. However, Chris’s right arm would be lost as a result of the damage. For a right-handed man this meant learning much of life all over again. By all accounts, while Chris was at Walter Reed, he responded to treatment. He thrived in the environment. In early 2005, the Washington Post did an article on a new program of which Chris was one of the first participants. He was a Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic
peer counselor and helped new patients by speaking with them and helping them understand their condition, while charting potential future plans. In the article Chris was quoted, ‘“It’s connecting on a one-to-one basis with somebody,” Johnson said. “The vets can kind of look at me, the guys getting back, and be like, ‘Wow, this guy is missing his arm, but he’s pretty holly-jolly.’ . . . I can kind of give them advice. I can tell them what they should expect.”’ At one point while awaiting discharge, Chris described his experiences in the program as giving him a new direction and even giving back to fellow service members. In the Washington Post article, Chris mentioned plans to apply to the University of Maryland and additional degrees in counseling. The military had given him a purpose—again. While at Walter Reed, family is a critical part of the healing process. In fact, Walter Reed provides a very good blend of peer healing and family support all the while doing physical and occupational therapy to allow the service member to recapture his life. The goal to become much of the person before being wounded and gain your discharge can for some vets, particularly those that require the bonds of brotherhood, be pyrrhic. To those that love you and friends, you hear the word hero and other accolades. In private, you often feel great guilt and doubt. The public you and the private you play out in very different ways. Externally, you make people laugh and have an infectious sense of humor. In private, you wonder, “Why me and how can I do this?” Even wonder, “Why did I live and others didn’t?” There’s often a feeling of being a burden on your family. And even though you are surrounded by those that love you, those brothers that kept you going seem so far away. Often this is the moment where a crossroads exist. That military purpose can transition to your individual purpose and many of these success stories can be seen. If the purpose was only directly tied to life in the military, often one’s way can be lost and although the visible wounds are given the credit, it’s the invisible wounds that are really the culprit. In this space, it’s hard for loved ones to know what to do. Former military members have often had the same feelings and see the signs; civilians that just know something is wrong don’t know what to Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

do and hope their service member will snap out of it. On the 21st of May 2008, Chris Johnson’s boat was found in the Susquehanna River with his dog still on board. Eight days later his body was discovered near Long Level. His remains were covered with an American flag and a community that prayed and hoped for his safe return was greatly saddened. Nearly four years after being wounded and three after being discharged from Walter Reed, Chris succumbed to his wounds. A memorial scholarship was created in his name; the LCpl Christopher Johnson Memorial Scholarship will hold its final installment on 19 March 2016. Chris’s family and friends and veterans from across the area will come to pay their respects to a man that paid in full for our freedom. Veteran Bike clubs will travel to Millersville, PA VFW Hall to support the charity event that to remember, in Chris’s words, “all the guys, men and women, who…were willing to serve our country.” Finally we cannot honor one of Chris’s wishes, because of the bonds of brotherhood, we will absolutely remember him.

eptember 1, 1939 marked the start of World War II. World War II is often said to be the hey-day of the military motorcycle, but it was actually a time of reduced combat roles compared to World War I. Motorcycles would continue to play a role in supporting the Allied troops, just as they had in the First World War, however, the capacity at which motorcycles participate in the war are different this time. Still valuable for courier duties, scouting, and reconnaissance motorcycles would need some improvements this goaround if they were to remain useful to the military. Two key players would remain prominent in the American motorcycle industry during the war, Indian and HarleyDavidson. These two were at war themselves, but would none the less make advancements to their production lines and serve the Allied forces well. The Allied troops discovered early in the war that their motorcycles were technologically behind when compared with captured German motorcycles. So what does one do in this situation? Well, you keep the captured bikes and send them back home of course. The motorcycles were dismantled and reverse engineering was used to recreate the modern motorcycle for ourselves. In the 1930’s and 40’s the advanced engineering seen in the BMW motorcycle was unprecedented. Basically, to an American engineer at the time, the idea of a shaft drive and telescoping forks was a little like approaching the concept of teleportation today, we can envision the idea, but have a snowballs chance in Hell of actually creating it. But that’s stealing you may say, .but such is the product of war. And what the hell, we got some damn good scooters out of the deal. So, first up is Harley-Davidson. Usually leading Allied convoys in recovered territory was “The Liberator”, also

known as the H-D WLA. First produced in 1940, the WLA underwent several modifications in order to better serve the Allies. Due to logistical needs the air filter was replaced with an oil-bath air cleaner for ease of maintenance. Rather than have to stock replacement filters, the rider could in essence “freshen up” his filter by adding regular motor oil. The crank case was also redesigned to reduce water intake so that the motorcycle could reportedly ford sixteen inches of water without stalling out. So what exactly IS the WLA? W is indicative of the family of motorcycle, this being the newest incarnation at the time, a 45 cubic inch flathead. L indicates “high compression”; in the usual H-D scheme (the “low compression” W model was only briefly available). A is for Army. H-D would similarly produce a slightly different model with big twin parts for the Canadian military. The WLA was originally produced in small numbers for general military expansion, but would reach nearly 90,000 produced by the close of the war. The WLA sported a springer front suspension with a side-valve design engine, used for its dependability rather than power, and would remain in production until 1973 in the Servi-Car. The HarleyDavidson WLA would become THE iconic United States military motorcycle of World War II. At the same time Harley was hard at work, Indian was also mass producing two-wheeled assistance for the

INDIAN FOUR troops. During World War II Indian made a de-tuned Sport Scout for Allied Army called the 640. The 640 embodied a 750 cc/45 cubic inch power plant. 6 refferd to the model and 40 to the year of manufacture (i.e. a 341 is a 1941 Indian Chief). In addition to the 640, Indian made many model 741’s. The 741 was a 30.50 cubic inch/500 cc model. This model lacked greatly in the speed department, but was extremely reliable. In fact, many have survived across the pond. The 500 cc model earned its own nickname, several in fact. The military referred to them as the 741b, while civilians called them “thirty-fifties”, “Junior Scouts”, or “pony Scouts”. Indian Chiefs were sold to the United States Army, in addition to the Australians, Canadians, and the French military. So what ever happened with that intel we received in the form of confiscated BMWs? Well let me tell ya a little about that. Harley incorporated the engine, forks, and shaft drive design exactly from the BMW design, resulting in the XA. The XA was a two-wheeled machine far superior to any American motorcycle in production at the time. Indian also took a thing or two from the krauts and created its own advance military machine, the 841 (complete with a hand clutch and foot shift). But beyond the 841, Indian developed in their factory a secret factory prototype; prototypes that came to be known as the Experimental Fours, that were rarer and much faster than the 841. In 1941 Indian completed its Indian Four prototype. It was an awesome 800 cc OHV Four engine, and used the 841 frame, while adding one more advancement;
a shaft drive. So why weren’t these modern marvels more popular? Well, unfortunately, JEEP began production of military vehicles, which were ultimately deemed more efficient by the military, and only about 1,000 each of Harley-Davidson and Indian’s futuristic bikes were ever manufactured. So what happened post war to the nearly 180,000 motorcycles produced for and/or used in the Second World War? Old bikes like these aren’t exactly the easiest to come by. Well, those troops had developed affection for two-wheeled travel and the attraction to motorcycles was spreading far and wide. Story has it that demobilized troops began buying cheap military surplus motorcycles after returning home. The only problem with the military issue bikes?? You guessed it, awkward windshields, ammunition racks, and unnecessary bags. So what did these inventive Vets do with their less than desirable surplus purchases? Well they chopped off everything they didn’t want, and revamped their motorcycles into the bikes of their dreams. And another birth has occurred in the motorcycle history family, the birth of the “chopper” and the eventual rise of “Biker” culture in the 1950’s. A car load of Irish Nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them. “Hey, show us yer tittiess, ya’ bloody penguins!” shouts one of the drunks. Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, “I don’t think they know who we are; show them your cross.” Sister Mary Immaculata rolls own her window and shouts, “Piss off, ya’ fookin’ little wankers, before I come over there and rip yer balls off and shove em’ in yer fookin’ filthy mouth” Sister Mary Immaculata then rolls up her window, looks back at Mother Superior, quite innocently, and asks, “Did that sound cross enough? ________________________________________________ George Phillips , an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?” He said “No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.” Then the police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available”. George said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and waited 3 minutes. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few minutes ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now,” and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” *True Story. Don’t mess with old people. BIKER ATTIRE ALLOWED IN NEW MEXICO COURTROOMS Declaring “A great victory for our community,” Annette Torrez, chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) and National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, announced that; We received the following message from Chief Justice Judge Nash concerning motorcycle vests in District Courthouse, “Please be informed that the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department will NOT be requiring members of your organization to turn their vests inside out upon entry into the Second Judicial District Courthouse and its’ Courtrooms in the future.” The NMMRO and the NNMCOC (Northern New Mexico Confederation of Clubs) sent Judge Nash a letter regarding an issue in which Bernalillo Sheriff Officers were asking the Guardians of the Children to remove their vests and turn them inside out so none of the patches were visible. “These vests and patches are what identify them to the abused children who they are there to support in court under difficult circumstance as these children have to face their perpetrators or have to sometimes testify,” explained Torrez. “While we can all benefit from this victory, it is the abused children from our community who will benefit most, as now members of motorcycle community can continue to support and accompany them in court.
