Toys for Tots 2010 Done, Mid America Motorcycle Expo on the Way How can I say Thank you enough to the Volunteers and Restaurants who donated so very much to make the second annual Thunder Roads Kentucky & Owensboro Biker News Toys for Tots Biker Ball Such a Success? On November 19th and 20th over 750 people came to enjoy two nights of Music, Food and just plain ole Kentucky hospitality. You raised over 450 toys and $6000 in cash, as of today there are still corporate and private donations coming in, and the total effects will not be known until we close the books on counting toys from the nearly 200 collection points still getting toys placed in them. The Ramada Inn Owensboro has been home to this event for two years, and Terry & Linda Dukes have been fantastic to open the doors of the Only Hotel in Owensboro that could offer us rooms, and an indoor Atrium to hold the event. There were two Bars near the Hotel, where guest could go and enjoy Country or Rock music from one of Owensboro most popular regional bands, Flat Stanley!
Brandon Lanham. I think ladies at both nights of the event got their chance to talk or get a picture with two of the U.S.M.C. Finest. The food court was blessed on Friday night with ATMOS Energy’s Charity cooking team, they cooked all of the 400 plus burgers, 300 plus Brats, and over 600 plus hot dogs it took to feed some of the people. Valerie Dant, ran the Kitchen Staff flawlessly, She worked with Red Lobster’s Kitchen manger April Hays who made over 800 of those awesome cheddar garlic rolls. There were many on the Kitchen staff, really, I wish I could name all of them, but you know who you were and we say THANK YOU! To the donors of all the fantastic food, those included, Unilever/Ragu , Buffalo Wild Wings, Frito Lay, Pizz-ARoma, Field Packing, T.G.I.Fridays, Pizza Hut, Royal Crown Bottlers, Sara Lee Bakery, Papa Johns Pizza, Moonlite BBQ, CRS One source, Maloney’s RocaBar, Wendy’s, City Subs & Salads, Olive Garden, Beef O’Brady’s, McDonald’s, County Line Café, Nikos, Shakers Pizza, Grippo Potato Chips, Cecilia’s Pizza, Ryan’s Steakhouse, Koehlers Bakery, Diane’s Bakery Delights, The Cup Cakery, and Clark Distributing for the Miller Lite, Coors Light & Mikes Hard Lemonade.
I would like to Thank the Following, My Wife Janie Rhoades Valerie Dant, Terry Mathis, Angie & Bart Hodskins, Danny & Lisa Bartlett, Jeff Morgan, Tim &Yvette Banks, Danny & Jennifer Dunning, John Culbertson, Clint & Whitney Tucker for their enduring work on this event. Mr. Jerry Paul, Area Director of Detachment #804 of the U.S. Marine Corps League for Monetary Donations were just as important to the event, bringing us two Fantastic Marines, Matt Fitzgerald & and a big THANK YOU! to American Legion Riders 4 Thunder Roads Kentucky

abroad visiting the most precious gift of Family and Loved Ones. Remember the Military personnel who are overseas defending our freedoms, those families are missing that special someone so we can celebrate in freedom, with ours in this Great Country of the United States of America. As always remember what this holiday is truly about, the birth of Jesus not the gifts, or the tinsel, those things just represent what the wise men brought to the manger. Janie and I want to wish everyone a Safe & Blessed Holiday Season!
With all the fun, we have enjoying the riding season; I feel it just as important to remember all the friends Merry Christmas, from Owensboro Biker News! & family members who have left us over the past 12 months. Those people will be in our hearts as we travel www.thunderroadskentucky.com

RIDING FOR CHAD Chad Deloy was a master mechanic at Man O’ War H-D in Lexington that passed away two years ago from an aneurysm at the age of 30. His best friend, Bill Reese, and fellow co-workers, organized a ride in his honor on October 17, 2010 with proceeds to benefit the ‘Back Pack Program’ for kids. Members of the Lexington Police Motorcycle Patrol led riders from Chad’s place of employment on a ride thru scenic, tree covered roads in Fayette, Scott, Woodford, and Jessamine counties, past majestic horse farms with their white or black fences and beautiful thoroughbred horses, a famous flour mill, and even a castle, to Chad’s gravesite and back to Man O’ War H-D for music by Sammy Marsee’s Trailer Trash Band and bar-b-que by Hill of Beans. Colorful fall foliage all along the route made it a special day riding in honor of a lost friend and loved one. Chad’s mother, uncle, and brother all rode down from Michigan to join with Chad’s wife Natasha, and two children, three year old Cody and seven year old Alyxandria on this day of remembrance for this young man who made a lasting memory on everyone who knew him. Ride in peace my friend; while you ride the clouds in the sky, we’ll ride the highways here on earth remembering the times we shared together. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten! PEACEMAKERS BENEFIT POKER RUN Every year Peacemakers Motorcycle Club in Richmond, Kentucky holds a Fall poker run to help needy families at Christmas time. This year, it will also help provide money for fruit baskets for the veterans at the Wilmore Veterans Home. Perfect weather this year made for a scenic ride thru the Red River Gorge area and Daniel Boone Natural Forest for close to 200 riders. The riders left Peacemaker Raceway Park in Madison county, traveled thru Estill, Powell, Wolfe, and Lee counties before returning to Peacemakers Raceway Park where a huge collection of door prizes were given away to lucky riders. Door prizes were donated by area businesses such as C&M Cycle, Man O’ War Harley Davidson, Randolph Scott Insurance, Manhattan Club, Montys Spirits, American Legend Cycle, S&S Tire, Castle of Color Tattoo, Lucky Lady Tattoo, Last Genuine Leather, Wildcat Harley Davidson, and L&P Liquor, Nikki’s Tavern, and many, many, others. The Poker run winner was George Macintosh from the VFW Riders M/C in Irvine. A true gentleman, George donated his winnings back to the ride because he had had such a great time for such a worthy cause. Hard times can hit anyone and bikers seem to open their hearts and wallets when a family is in need, or to do something to thank the veterans of our armed services. Without their sacrifices we wouldn’t have the freedoms we take for granted every day. Peacemakers Motorcycle Club wishes to thank all who rode in this ride, all businesses who donated door prizes, and to anyone else who participated in any way to this great day of riding motorcycles to help the needy and our veterans.

SIMPLE, SUCCULENT, PERFECT, CHRISTMAS ROAST BEEF.....Everytime
1 Beef Roast, any cut, any size 2 Cloves of Garlic; peeled and sliced (optional) 1 Stick of Real Butter; softened Salt & Cracked Black Pepper to taste Let uncooked roast sit out on counter at room temperature for apprx. 45 mins. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place roast in a pan that you have lightly sprayed w/ either canned olive oil or butter spray. Take roast and make slits, up to 10 or so, distributed evenly all over roast, and slide a slice of garlic into slit. Next, rub butter all over your entire roast; generously, and salt & pepper all over roast. Place roast in pan, fat side up. Place meat in oven and set timer for 1 hour. DO NOT OPEN DOOR at any time for any reason. When timer goes off, turn the oven off and again, Do Not Open Door. Decide what your serving time will be and exactly 45 minutes before your serving time, turn the oven back on at 375 degrees. Cook roast for 25 more minutes and turn oven off. Remove roast, wrap immediately in foil and let it just sit for 15 minutes. Remove foil and slice according to thickness you desire. If you follow this recipe to the letter, your roast beef will always be perfect. Juicy, flavorful and tender. Holiday bliss!
ROAST BEEF GRAVY:
Take your pan that you cooked roast in and put it right onto stove on medium. Do this immediately after pulling roast and wrapping in foil. Sprinkle apprx. 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour generously all over the pan drippings. Start moving the mixture around and around pan immediately and mix in well with drippings until flour is thoroughly mixed in. Next, slowly add beef stock little by little and keep working into flour coated drippings. All total you’ll add apprx. a cup of beef stock. Salt & pepper to taste, add 1 large pat of butter and turn up heat, keep stirring constantly as gravy will start thickening up really fast when you turn up heat. As soon as it’s the desired thickness you want, turn off stove and pour gravy into a gravy boat. Delicious! Note* If you want to make sure there’s plenty of gravy to go around, simply double the amount of beef stock you add and also add a bottle of pre-made, quality beef gravy into your homemade gravy. A Christmas Roast Beef is a thing of beauty to behold on a big serving platter. 20 Thunder Roads Kentucky

End of Year Thoughts……… * I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die. * Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong. * I totally take back all those times I put up a fight about taking a nap when I was younger. * There is great need for sarcasm fonts; the “finger”, the “mooning”, the “bite me”, the “suck this”......... * How the hell is anyone besides Martha Stewart supposed to know how to fold a damn fitted sheet? * Map Quest really needs to start their directions on prompt # 5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my own neighborhood. Also.....an Avoid This Neighborhood prompt would be greatly appreciated. * Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person actually died, right? * Why is it that bad decisions always make for really good stories? * You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you just know that you aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. * Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection... yet again. * I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call. * I totally disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay. * I have a very hard time deciphering that fine line between boredom and real hunger. * How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear, understand or really give a damn, about a word they said? * I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters....unite! * Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets stank. Jeans? Jeans seldom get dirty, and you can wear them all week. * Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket or finding their cell phone, but I’d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 2 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time! * Why is it the older you get, the more the movie “The Borrowers”, about how little gremlins take or move your “stuff” around, truly makes so much sense? * The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important to protect. 22 Thunder Roads Kentucky
An old lady dies and goes to heaven. She’s chatting it up with St. Peter at the “Pearly Gates” when all of a sudden she hears the most awful, blood-curdling screams. Don’t worry about that,’ says St. Peter, ‘It’s only someone having the holes drilled into her shoulder blades for the wings.’ The old lady looks a little uncomfortable but carries on with the conversation. A few minutes later, there are more blood curdling screams. ‘Oh my,’ says the old lady, ‘now what’s happening?’’ Not to worry,’ says St. Peter, ‘She’s just having her head drilled to fit the halo.’ ‘I can’t do this,’ says the old lady, ‘I’m going to Hell.’ ‘You can’t go to that nasty place,’ says St. Peter. ‘You’ll be raped and taken advantage of.’ ‘Maybe so,’ says the old lady, ‘but I’ve already got the holes for that.’ Four guys go fishing…..After an hour, the following conversation took place: First guy: You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend..’ Second guy: That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.’ Third guy: Man ,you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.’ They continue to fish. When they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word, they asked him, “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. What’s the deal?” Fourth guy: I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off the alarm, gave the wife a playful slap on the ass and said: ‘Fishing or Sex?’ And she groggily replied,……’Wear sunblock.’ At a deer camp, no one wanted to room with “Ratchet”, because he snored so loudly all night long. They decided to take turns. The first guy slept with Ratchet and comes to breakfast the next morning obviously sleep deprived. He said, “Ratchet snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night. The next night it was guy #2’s turn. In the morning, exact same thing. They said “Man, what happened to you? “That damn Ratchet shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night”. The third night was Panhead’s turn. Panhead was a sage, old-school biker. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. “Good morning!” he boomed. They couldn’t believe it. “Man, what happened?” they all shouted. Panhead coolly replied, “Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Ratchet into bed, patted his butt, and kissed his forehead....Ratchet decided it best to stay up and watch me all night”. him on December 2010

HOGROCK RIVER RALLY FALL 2010 by Bob Nadeau
HogRock River Rally at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, is the hottest little party in the Midwest, and that’s no bull. This is a true motorcycle rally. This year the weather was great, cool in the night and warm in the day. Not as many people at the fall rally but it was still a great time. Vendors like Smitty who was doing body painting, Ozzie and Tattitude were doing tattoos, and Robin, the Do Rag Lady was there with all the stuff she makes and embroideries. I meant to buy one of her hats with HogRock embroidered on it. I remembered it on the way home Sunday morning because the weather was cool. I hope she saved me one. The Ring Lady was there as well as Nancy and her Tie Dye clothes, and lots more vendors offering food, biker’s clothes, leathers, and motorcycle repair. Speaking of motorcycle repair, when I got to Clarksville, Tennessee, I was having a little trouble and decided I needed someone to look at my motorcycle. Well, John, the editor of Thunder Roads Kentucky, and Jason Steele, owner of Bubba’s Cycle Shop, road down to Clarksville from Greenville, Kentucky. Jason helped me out and got me back on the road. If you live anywhere near Greenville, Kentucky, give Jason a call at 270-3386404 or 1-877-5cycle6. He’s good people. Back to the rally. What makes this rally so great is a combination of things. The vendors, the entertainment, being well organized and well laid out with the vendors and the entertainment all centrally located, the laid-back atmosphere and attitude of the people working there and also the attitude of the motorcyclists who have been going there for the past ten years. That’s right. They just completed their tenth year. They must be doing something right to keep people coming back for ten years. And the location is great. Scenic roads lead you to places like Garden of the Gods with its rock formations, Pounds Hollow Lake which is deep in the forest, Cave-in-Rock which is right on the river where pirates used to hide. And there’s the Rose Hotel, built in 1812 to cater to the river traffic. It is still in operation today as a bed & breakfast (this is where I stay), and there is much more. I was riding to one of these great locations and in the middle of nowhere was a phone both. Really, there was nothing for miles in both directions so I stopped and checked the phone. Would you believe it still works? I like Hogdaddy’s Biker Bar in Old Shawneetown. What a great tavern! They did a really nice job of remodeling this two-story building. It has a bar,

a bandstand, a dance floor, and a balcony overlooking the bar, the dance floor and the bandstand. In the back is the food service and pool table, and upstairs from that is another bar with tables. Hogdaddy’s drew a big crowd during HogRock, but I think most of them go just to see Bobbie, one of the bartenders. The crowd was small compared to the crowd it drew during the Little Sturgis Rally in July. Little Sturgis and Old Shawneetown are only nine miles apart so if you go to Little Sturgis, Old Shawneeown is a must. The Old Shawneetown Street Rally drew over eight thousand people last July and it only costs $10 to get in for the whole weekend. What a deal! It was smart for them to work their rally off the Little Sturgis Rally. This rally is put on by the people of Old Shawneetown for the people of Old Shawneetown to help with their annual budget. That’s the American spirit at work. Life’s short. Have fun. Bob

NEWS BYTES NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) DIRTY POLITICS BACKFIRES In an historic mid-term election that saw the GOP sweep into control of the House and narrowly miss winning a Senate majority, as well as Republican gains in gubernatorial posts and statewide races, most of the electorate is simply happy to see an end to negative campaign ads and mudslinging by candidates. One such attack ad could easily be confused with a commercial for Sons of Anarchy, with a Florida congressional hopeful being accused of being a member of “a biker gang linked to meth running” and acts of criminal violence. The TV spot kicks off with a rumbling Harley motor and a grittyvoiced narrator growling, “Guns. Prostitution. Murder. That’s who Allen West rides with.” Paid for and produced by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the smear piece ends with, “We don’t need a politician who rides with gangs.” The Palm Beach Post reported that the Florida Democratic Party said a West supporter was wearing a South Florida Confederation of Clubs patch, and that confederation “has ties to the Outlaws organized crime syndicate.” West (R) is indeed an active motorcyclist who writes a regular political column for a local South Florida biker magazine “Wheels on the Road” that supported his bid, and the Tea Party favorite did have members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club providing security during his campaign, but the mudslinging appears to be the desperate last-gasp tactics of incumbent Rep. Ron Klein (D) to hold on to his House seat. The Miami New Times called it the “Scariest Ad Of the Year”, but according to one of West’s fellow biker rag columnists, Chuck Lehmann, “This smear tactic by Klein backfired big time as the voters overwhelmingly gave, the underdog, Allen West a resounding 10 point victory over the pathetic Ron Klein, who went down to defeat in disgrace. My WOTR colleague/columnist Lt.Col. Allen West can now be called Congressman-elect Allen West, C.D. 22 Representative in Congress.” VOTERS SEE RED Fueled by discontent, record voter turnout nationwide not only gave the Republican Party the nod in local and national races, but they also saw red at the ballot box as Red Light Camera initiatives lost big on election day. According to TheNewspaper.com, “Regardless of who you voted for, November 2nd represented a major win for everyone who opposes the use of red light cameras. In a handful of pockets across the nation, voters decided they were sick of the automated machines and by voting against the use of these devices, sent a message to law enforcement, as well as the companies that manufacture red light cameras.” These cameras are often viewed as a revenue-generating scheme rather than safety devices, and many citizens feel that red light cameras even represent a violation of our constitutional rights. On election day, cities and districts across the nation decided to ban the use of these cameras, adding to a growing list of towns that have already voted to do so. 26 Thunder Roads Kentucky
“The outcome of the voting is a major blow for American Traffic Solutions, the company that manufacturers a large number of the cameras,” reported Autoblog.com. “ATS tried hard to block these measures from even appearing on the ballot, but it was denied. The company was then forced to spend millions of dollars to attempt to sway the public to vote in favor of the cameras, to no avail.” In Houston, Texas, which happens to be one of ATS’s most important accounts, a campaign was run against the camera company by brothers Paul and Randy Kubosh through their Citizens Against Red Light Cameras organization. ATS reportedly spent over $1.7 million, ten times more than the Kubosh brothers, yet ATS still lost the fight in Houston. Following Houston’s lead, red light cameras are now banned in Mukilteo, Washington; Anaheim, California; and Baytown, Texas. NEW YORK RIDERS FIGHT DISCRIMINATION In addition to the unprecedented harassment on highways by police manning motorcycle-only checkpoints, which is the subject of ongoing litigation by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitch Proner, Big Apple riders are now faced with elimination of legal bike-only parking spaces. As if it weren’t’ difficult enough for New York City motorcyclists, over the past decade bikers contend the city has turned up the heat on regulatory and legislative fronts, leading to growing complaints of harassment and accusations of discrimination. There are only about 37,000 motorcyclists in a city of over 8 million people so they are a tiny minority, but the motorcycle community has begun to organize and fight back with a group known as “The New York Motorcycle & Scooter Task Force” (NYMSTF), working to ease some of these problems. Most large cities in the U.S. provide bikeronly parking for good reason: Bikes and scooters take up less room and are more environmentally-friendly than passenger vehicles. OSHA TELLS OREGON SCHOOL DISTRICT TO BAN MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division officials have recommended that school employees be prohibited from using motorcycles as transportation to work-related activities after Principal Tiffany O’Donnell was seriously injured Sept. 13 in a motorcycle accident en route between two rural schools. O’Donnell, principal of both Elk Trail Elementary School and Shady Cove School, was seriously injured while riding her Suzuki motorcycle between campuses when she was struck by a Nissan pickup truck that was making an illegal U-turn, police said. State OSHA officials said the school district has not violated any regulations, and no citations have been issued, but cautioned that allowing employees to drive motorcycles for work activities presents a hazard to employees, as well as a liability to the school district. The school board is mulling over the recommendation, which is not mandatory. School administrators are expected to drive their personal vehicle for work purposes, but it hadn’t occurred to district officials to dictate what kind of vehicle they drive, said Eagle Point schools Superintendent Cynda Rickert, adding that “We don’t know if the Board will move forward on a policy not allowing you to drive a motorcycle if you are doing school business.” December 2010
NEWS BYTES OMG Distracted driving apparently causes fatal crashes affecting bikers and drivers of light trucks more than any other group on the road, according to 2009 statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Though the statistics don’t break down which operator was distracted, only that “distracted driving” affected one or more drivers in fatal crashes, you can be sure there aren’t too many bikers distracted by talking or texting on a cell phone while riding their bikes. It’s estimated that approximately 959,000 traffic incidents last year were caused by distracted driving and 4,898 of those resulted in at least one death. As a result, Massachusetts recently joined 29 other states in passing a texting ban; almost all of those same states (28) have also banned cell phone use in some form. However, a new insurance industry study says that such bans have not reduced automobile accidents. The report does not dispute the danger of texting while driving, but rather it suggests that banning the practice does not automatically produce safer roads. “If we’re counting on texting bans to reduce crashes from distracted driving, they’re not doing that,’’ said Adrian Lund, president of the Highway Loss Data Institute in presenting the group’s findings in Kansas City during the annual meeting of the Governors Highway Safety Association. The new study is not the first time the research institute has suggested that legislative efforts to combat distracted driving are not affecting crash rates. In January, the institute found virtually no change in crash frequency for states that had enacted bans on handheld phone use. Lund suggested multiple explanations, pointing to prior studies that found many drivers are not heeding the texting ban, and may be lowering their hands and taking their eyes off the road to text more discreetly. US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, who has championed awareness of the dangers of cellphone use and other distractions, immediately condemned the study as “completely misleading.’’ HIGH COURT RULES AGAINST SOUTH AUSTRALIA GANG LAW Six of seven High Court judges have ruled that aspects of anti-“bikie” laws, which prevent members of “declared” motorcycle gangs from associating with each other, were unconstitutional as applied in South Australia. Under SA laws passed last year to disband outlawed motorcycle clubs, the state attorney-general can “declare” an organization to be an illegal gang if satisfied that its members associate for serious criminal purposes and represent a risk to public safety and order. This is the second resounding legal defeat of this calculating and reactionary piece of legislation, according to the United Motorcycle Council of New South Wales, a coalition of motorcycle clubs organized to fight such discriminatory gang laws. “This decision is an important milestone not just in terms of the fight against the South Australian legislation, but also against similar hastily adopted legislation of other states,” said Ferret, UMC Chairman.
www.thunderroadskentucky.com
Other Australian states, including NSW and Queensland, have enacted similar legislation but officials there believe that their legislation differs in key respects. To celebrate the Supreme Court decision, members of rival clubs came together for a drink to toast a win against the very laws aimed at stopping them from associating. But South Australian Premier Mike Rann said the ruling was only a setback in his self-declared war on bikies, saying he would “keep coming” at members of motorcycle clubs with new legislative measures. SCOTTISH BIKERS PROTEST FUEL HIKES Hundreds of Scottish bike riders formed a rolling roadblock into Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, on Saturday, Sept 25th to protest skyrocketing petrol prices and increase public awareness of a proposed 1p increase in fuel duty. Members of Fife Bikers blocked sections of the M90 as around 600 bikers slowly rolled into the capital, and organizers say they are prepared to do so again. Member Jim Seymour told the Courier newspaper that he thought the bikers had received a “fantastic” response from the public who lined the streets and overpasses to watch the demonstration. Petitions handed out that day and signed by members of the public are still being gathered, and will be handed in to MSPs in Parliament who will be asked to take legislative action. WEIRD NEWS: ACTOR FATALLY SHOT FILMING MOTORCYCLE GETAWAY SCENE Actor Kirk Abella was masked and filming a getaway scene for the British film “Going Somewhere” when a watchman mistook the performer for a real bandit and fatally shot him. The New York Daily News reports that when the director shouted, “Action,” Abella ran to his waiting motorcycle (and masked stunt driver) to make his film getaway -- only to be grabbed by his shirt and shot in the back at close range by volunteer village guard, Eddie Cuizon, in front of dozens of spectators. Police told the media that when the crowd heard Cuizon fire the gun they believed it was just part of the film -- not realizing they were witnessing the actor’s murder. The shooting took place in the Parian district of Cebu in the Philippine Islands, where criminals often use motorcycles to escape law enforcement. However, the shooting was no simple mistake. Firearms are illegal in the Philippines, and before the incident the guard borrowed a friend’s .357 handgun and went to the police station -- where he was informed that the filming was taking place. The watchman, accompanied by a police officer, then made his way to the film set to help secure the area. Police Chief Alexis Relado said, “I don’t know why he still accosted them.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.” ~Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) 26th President of the United States Thunder Roads Kentucky 27

RAPTORS HALLOWEEN PARTY Saturday night, October 23 , was a scary night at the American Legion Hall in Perryville, Ky, when the Raptors held their annual Halloween party. Clubs from all around the area were on hand to enjoy a night filled with Playboy bunnies, sexy schoolgirls, dancers, witches, fairies, genies, and about any other costume the partygoers could make up. The Sideways Z band provided the music and the Raptors women provided the food. A young lady dressed as a bed bug and a bed won the costume contest. Now I’ve been to three county fairs, a hanging or two, and a little deal involving a goat, and I’ve never seen anything to beat that! You never know what will see at a party with the Raptors because the ‘WHMFTWD’ patch on their vest means ‘who has more fun than we do’, and that Saturday night, they made me believe it! BAGGER BUILT FOR SPEED RECORD Story and Pics By “T” Specs By Sam Wills, Racing Innovations
Go, Dog. Go! – written by PD Eastman, Was one of my favorite children’s books as a child. Little did I know, that years later, I’d be repeating that saying over and over in my head as I drove to a motorcycle photo shoot in Oklahoma City. I was headed to do a shoot on a bike built by Racing Innovations for Big Dog Motorcycles and S&S Motors. Sam Wills, a former motorcycle racer, had made up his mind that he could build a bagger motorcycle that could go over 200mph, crushing the world record. In doing so, it was a natural for him to share this idea with Big Dog Motorcycles and S&S since Sam himself, rides the Big Dog Bulldog Bagger. I watched this bike being built over the summer. It was interesting to watch a regular street bike turn into a mad dog on a chain, ready to burst out and eat the world! And that she did! Sam built the bike with the help of Racing Innovations builders, Shaun Norris and Delvin Clark. Before he could try the record at Bonneville Salt Flats, he took it to Sturgis for its unveiling and display. I saw it there with the Big Dog Motorcycles display where many a dreamy eyed rider salivated over it. Mid-week, Sam pulled out of there and headed to the Salt Flats to meet up with the crew, Shaun, Delvin and Bruno. He shared the many challenges which the Salt Flats present which seemed nearly endless as he described them. First and foremost, it costs $600 to enter the motorcycle. Then Sam, the rider, had to be licensed in order to set the record. After a couple steps up in speed from 125 mph, he received his Class C 175 mph license. He must wear full armored leathers with no openings for safety. Then came the rules, plenty of rules are mandated. They have a mandatory 118 octane leaded fuel that must be purchased from the track. The track itself is a feat to get to with nearly 20 miles between the pit area and the 3 mile track. Sad but true, the crew went thru two Four Wheelers in pulling the bike to the starting line and had to resort to pulling it with the motor home towards the middle of the week. They said it was a bit embarrassing at first, but that being said, they became very popular with the pit stewards and people at the track. You see, there is NO shade out on the flats by the track so the crew flocked to the shade behind the motor home as it pulled to the starting gate, often handing out a few cold drinks. Back to the high speed record! It’s no easy street there as you must wait in long lines to get a run on the track. Each person must finish and clear the track ahead of you prior to your positioning. Now remember this track is 3 miles long. Once he made a pass, he was timed at different intervals on the track between the 1 and 3 mile marks. Between 1 and 2 miles and 2 ¼ and 3 miles. Now, once you set in a speed, you have to go all the way back to the tower to get your official time sheet, then rush it to the pit area to register your time within one hour of your setting the time. Now, once this is done, they had to let them impound the bike overnight. They cannot touch it, motor 30 Thunder Roads Kentucky

or anything. The track put a sealed cable on their heads, so they can’t do a thing there either. Basically, they have to go wait til morning to ride again. Once morning comes, they have to meet or exceed the same speed they registered the day before in order for it to become an official record. The great news here is that Sam set the speed in the first day at 158.766 mph. The second day he hit 162.60. The lower speed of 158.766 is the speed that was set to record. Sam said he wished he would have waited to set the first time, but he was so anxious to simply get a record, that he went ahead and set it in at that as a starting point. As for the 200 mph record, Sam feels that will be another day. He said the most trouble they had with the bike was getting and maintaining traction on the salt. As you could imagine, the salt track is very slick. He told me at one point the bike got so squirrelly due to the slick surface, he wasn’t sure he was going to make it to the end of the track in one piece. They then took as much weight off of the bike as they could, including its ice water for cooling the motor. Although they had not set the 200 mph record in the week they were there, they felt that they learned a lot about their next once a year opportunity at Bonneville. At the time of this publication, they were headed to the Texas Flying Mile, Goliard TX to see what she’d do on a solid paved track. I hope we get to report next month that they broke a 200 mph bagger record there. SPECS FOR BIKE: Bike 4458, Class 3000 MP, Gas at Bonneville Salt Flats Big Dog Bagger Corrected Alt of 6772 Ft. Galveston Island, TX November 4th thru 7th by: toni mccoy shearon This was hands down one of the best BIG rallies that we have ever covered. You’ve got a gorgeous island, all beach on one side, all commerce on the other. Buildings that have maintained the integrity and look of what they actually were in the early 1900’s, such as the Hard Candy & Peanut Butter Warehouse, 32 Thunder Roads Kentucky
authentic old brick and mortar, only with a great twist of new, high-tech condos and/or office space built on at the very top. Fabulous! We departed on Halloween, Sunday the 31st , around noon, and arrived in Galveston on Monday evening around 10 p.m., parked our TRM Promo Rig behind the luxury San Luis Resort Condos & Hotel, ate at the IHOP right in front of tennis courts, got the critters all tucked in (that included Super B.), and around midnight, Brian and I crossed the street over to the beach and just walked the shoreline as the waves gently lapped and foamed, and it was probably around 72°, full moon, and totally satisfying. Well, not totally; but that was remedied as soon as we returned to the Rig. It proceeded to rain all night, but that was o.k. because in the morning Mother Nature had performed her insta-car wash and all we had to do was wipe off all the road grime from Thunder Pete and he was bright, shiny and clean for his Texas Lonestar debut. Tuesday was white and gray overcast, mist in the air, but still warm so we ran around the island on the bike and surprise!, we needed a new tire and battery, so we ended up going to the only bike shop on the island; Galveston Custom Cycle Works, where owner Mark and ace-mechanics Dustin and J.J. truly got to see quite a bit of us during the course of the rally. They’re a fun group and have a kick-ass shop, along with original t’s and jeans, but what’s really cool is that their shop has December 2010
a corridor that goes right next door to an island favorite hangout joint; The Loading Dock, which has live bands on the weekend but always a good size crowd and eclectic
customer base, both inside and at outside, roof covered, picnic tables. Thanks, GCCW for all your help, assistance and great prices. IF per chance you find yourself hanging about GCCW getting some work done, do yourself a favor and walk directly across the street to ANTIQUE WAREHOUSE, where Proprietors Scott & Holly Hanson not only have the most organized antique store I’ve ever been in, but ask Scotty about giving you the “nickel tour” as he playfully refers to it, where their entire upstairs area was once an authentic 28 room Brothel and although Scott & Holly have decorated the upstairs rooms with their gorgeous and rare antiques, it’s simply amazing to see with your own eyes in almost every room where “the working girls” would write on the walls their daily take of 65¢ or 45¢ or if a big spender 75¢……and then a tally for their entire day; amazing. I’ll tell you something that chilled me to the bone; there was a butcher block table that was easily over 100 years old and at the end of it, wooden stirrups had been secured and Scotty said it was a make-shift abortion table for the girls that had become pregnant but basically were enslaved to a life of prostitution, so had no choices or rights. Wow! That entire upstairs you literally just feel the ghosts of burdened souls past, but nothing brought me to tears of frustration for those girls, like that damned old butcher-block table. But thank you Scotty for such an emotional and enlightening tour. There was definitely a friend connection made. www.thunderroadskentucky.com
Wednesday was setup day and we had prime placement, located a block down where all the bikes entered onto “The Strand”, which is the main drag that this
Rally revolves around. The Strand has all the great bars, clubs and eateries, but then there’s approximately three rows of unique vendors, another street crossing, then the entire Harbor District, as Galveston is a renowned harbor for ships, boats and cruise vessels. The famous RAT’S HOLE BIKE SHOW was held down at the harbor, where all the bikes were displayed in the all-brick parking lot; Pier 21, overlooking the Bay side. The bikes entered were indisputably, some of the most unique and jaw-dropping bikes in the world. Nobody does a big rally Bike Show like Rat’s Hole. There’s also a virtual who’s-who list of magnificent restaurants and shops down at the Harbor. Bob Cooney, State Editor Owner of Thunder Roads Texas and Shelly Horan, Editor In Chief, hosted us to lunch at Willie G’s and it was 4-Star. Now, the Fisherman’s Wharf was very casual; we ate on the outer deck, right on the Bay a couple nights and the food was superb each night. The Harbor is where they also had the main stage set up and there were a multitude of bands and entertainment acts throughout all four days, but the one that we managed to actually see for ourselves while down at the Harborside stage was Zach Tate Band (ZTB to their fans) who proudly claim Texas as their home base, emitted such a raw energy and harmony. ZTB…… zip-lock fresh! Thunder Roads Kentucky 33
One place that was the talk of the town was Limp Nickie’s Lot – The Pit, which actually opened up just a few days prior to the Rally and was there just for the Rally. The place was standing room only, and sometimes standing on someone else’s shoulders room only! They’ve got the gorgeous babes dancing on the bar and the entire atmosphere is electrifying. This entire Rally is wired to the hilt! I’m serious………the fact that this entire Rally takes place in a circumference of a 20 block radius, makes it feel like a close-knit community Rally and it takes on an intimacy and connection that is missing from so many other rallies. The bars and restaurants stay open late, the Harbor is always a-buzz with bikers milling all about, hootin’ and hollerin’, and The Strand is always 2x2 bikes, 20 blocks long, going around and around in their parade procession. And what threw us for a loop is that they actually DO things bigger in Texas; example; come nightfall, the parade procession was virtually a light show in the fact that a vast majority of the bikes were custom LED lit, and some even had their lights sequenced to their IPods, with 4-way, multi-colored lights blinking away to the tune of Kid Rock’s “I’m Wrong But You Aint Right”. I mean, come on, this was like going to the Ice Capades and watching Bikes On Ice. It was a purely delightful show. There was never, ever, a lack of something to do. Tat Expos, dolphin tours, poker tournaments, fishing tours, and the majority of shops on the island collaborated in welcoming the bikers to their island by offering Lonestar Specials and promotions of their own. Here again is yet another prime example of a city that “gets it” as to the hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue this event brings to the island. Because when you get 300,000+ bikers onto one island over a 4-day period, there’s gonna’ be some serious dollarinos passing hands. Want to give a shout out to CMA who helped us out of a jamb and were there lickity –split to load up a broke down bike……God loves CMA and so do we. They assisted many bikers during the Rally, and didn’t even ask for donations, but of course, it’s good to contribute to this much needed and deserved biker’s friend. Thank you John Greene, Action Promotions, Brinder Cummings; super-duper Rally Coordinator, and ALL the staff and crew for this outstanding, well oiled, smoothly and superbly organized, Texas Lonestar Rally. Additionally, sincere thanks to Bob and Shelly and their dedicated TX Crew. What a great group of people, who we had the most fun hanging out with, and being indoctrinated into not just this phenom. Rally, but this historical, beautiful island that’s nestled down low, weathering storm after storm, comprised of survivors and damn good, down to earth folks. THANK YOU, TEXAS, for your BIG hearted hospitality! We’ll see you next year!
