2011 Here We Come!

Can you believe it, it’s the start of another calendar year. 2010 was a great year in many aspects, and there were some pretty tough times in the mix but as the old saying goes, you cannot change the past, and time marches on. Today I got the call from our state editor John, he asked if I had this article ready to send for print, well you see if you know me, I can talk about something anytime, but in the off season bike stories are a little something to work at. Within one hour from the call from John, my phone rang again, this time it was Tim Banks of Cycleworks Choppers in Owensboro Kentucky, he made my day, and Tim had just the bike story for this issue. Last month we were fortunate enough to tell you about a special night in Western Kentucky, when Thunder Roads Kentucky and Owensboro Biker News hosted the second annual USMC Toys for Tots Biker Ball. We sent you many pictures in for the December issue, Look back and read about that night, because it sets the tone for the rest of article. You see we held an auction to raise money for the cause during the evening for a Sgt. Major Commissioned coin, Tim Banks won it in a team effort with Jason Reed (Bubba) of Bubba’s Cycle Shop in Greenville Kentucky, these two had an ideal to Purchase the coin and do something special with it. After the auction to the surprise of the USMC Finest Matt Fitzgerald and Brandon Lanham, who were very involved with this and the future of Toys for Tots future here in the Bluegrass State. The announcement that followed was that Tim Banks, Cycleworks Choppers would build a tribute bike for the United States Marine Corps, and the mission known to many Toys for Tots, that announcement was a crowd pleaser. 4 Thunder Roads Kentucky

I am sure you know where this story is heading by now, Just look at the pictures that accompany the text on these pages. Tim told us in November that the bike would be unveiled during the Mid America Motorcycle Expo, scheduled for January 29th & 30th of 2011 in Evansville Indiana. Sure enough, this bike was in the final mockup stages and Tim and His wife Yvette wanted to get some Pictures taken with the individuals who made the project come to life. As I hurried around town and called on everyone to get together for the pictures a second Phone call came, Man what a Christmas Present was waiting for Owensboro Biker News on that call. Jerry Paul Director of the GySgt. W.J. Norris Detachment #804 of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Had called to tell me that the goals we had set for the 2010 Toys for Tots had been met!! As of December 21, 2010 we had worked with many, and I repeat many tireless volunteers and together 10,000 plus children in 15 counties were blessed with Christmas through combined efforts. Supporters, Volunteers, Friends I say thank you! And Mission Accomplished! Now with all this excitement and energy I headed to the shop on Owensboro’s east side ready to take the pictures and get the story to you. As the picture show you the bike is nearly ready for disassembly and finish work, Tim was going over trim and paint details with Matt Fitzgerald & Brandon Lanham, making sure every inch of the colors and theme would be to the standards fitting to the Marine Corps. I am not going to give everything up in this story, but as I sat and January 2011

listened in on Marine dress code, Marine protocols the Building skill of Tim Banks and the Knowledge of Bubba, Brandon and Matt were coming together in many ways. Now if you want to see this machine when it makes its public debut, then you better make plans to attend the 2011 Mid America Motorcycle Expo in Evansville Indiana on January 29th and 30th 2011. We anticipate over 50 vendors and hundreds of custom motorcycles to fill the 40,000 square foot arena with the feel and colors of the motorcycle industry. $12 for general admission for both days will be a bargain for this quality show. Lucas Oil Products will return as the title sponsor of the event, Bud’s Harley-Davidson of Evansville is the events presenting sponsor. Hooters restaurants, Miller Lite and Thunder Roads Magazine are three other national companies involved with making the 2011 show a success. Host Hotels for the event in Evansville are the LaQuinta Inn & Baymont Inn located just a few miles from the arena on Evansville’s eastside, they are offering you a $67 room rate for the weekend; just make sure you mention the show when booking your rooms. You can get all the information about the show online at www.midamericamotorcycleexpo.com or by calling Cycleworks Promotions at 270-689-2101 look for the full-page ad in this issue of Thunder Roads Kentucky. Until the February issue of Thunder Roads Kentucky Hits the streets the only way you will know how the show was, Is Be There! “I guarantee if Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane were still here, they would be riding Harleys” George Milos Deadwood South Dakota Chamber President

SturgiS Motorcycle rally. Our plan was to leave at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Knowing that it always takes more planning to pack for a motorcycle trip, I started the day before. Why is it that it always takes twice as long as you think it’s gonna take? Needless to say, I didn’t get done until 10 P.M the next night, got to bed about 11:30, then about 2 a.m. we woke up to howling winds, lightning and the sound of heavy rain pummeling our rooftop. Crap! What do you do but hope when you get up, the storm has passed? Russ’s brother Willie, who was riding up with us this year, called early, about 5 a.m., “What’s the plan?” “Come on over, “ replied Russ. It was overcast and threatened rain, but the ride up was uneventful. Traffic was light. Perfect riding temps, no rain and none of that God-awful Wyoming wind!

We opted to take one last break at the Gaslight in Rockerville before heading to our home base about 15 miles away in Rapid City. We’re sitting there, Russ on the phone to Jack, a friend in Colorado when in walks a group of 5 or 6. Russ exclaims, “I’m not sure but I think a woman just walked in here topless!” Jack replied, “Well, I guess you better hang up then!” Sure enough, she was naked from the waist up, but these were no silicone giants, they were home grown and she was obviously very comfortable in her own skin. Because they were at the first table inside the entrance, everyone noticed the bare fleshed woman immediately after they walked in. It was entertaining just watching reactions of everyone coming in.

Paul Reubens “PeeWee Herman” led the ride with a Captain America electric bicycle. It was pretty exciting to be among this group of riders from all over the world, that included celebrities, world famous builders, cigar aficionados and who knows who else? As the pack of bikes snaked out of Deadwood and down the canyon, I noticed something odd up ahead…a guy was sitting backwards on the pillion seat camera in hand, shooting riders coming down the canyon behind him!

A couple miles later, there was a guy hanging out of a sidecar with his camera. It was the iconic motorcycle photographer, Michael Lichter! I have to admit it was cool to be on the other side of the camera, especially when Michael Lichter is the one looking out of the camera lens, hanging out of a sidecar, signaling you to come closer, while riding through a mountain canyon at 45 mph!

Our annual pilgrimage to Sturgis always includes trying to do something new. This year our week started with The Legends Ride, the premier charity-celebrity ride in motorcycling. The gathering before the ride gave everyone the opportunity to meet a few celebrities including Lorenzo Lamas and the beloved “Survivor” star Rupert Boneham, Motorcycle greats including Eddie Trotta, Brian and Laura Klock and Satya Krause were among attendees at this sold-out event. After a press conference at the Franklin Hotel, we left Deadwood around 3:00 for the 50-mile ride to the Legendary Buffalo Chip in Sturgis. The streets of Deadwood, South Dakota were packed as about 375 bikes of all makes and models started the escorted ride through the Black Hills, Sturgis, then on to a special Legends Ride reception, pre-concert party and auction at The Legendary Buffalo Chip. 6 Thunder Roads Kentucky

. . Rumbles into it’s 70th YeaR At the Buffalo Chip, we had the opportunity to visit Michael Lichter’s “motorcycles as art” exhibit. Lichter, who first brought motorcycle exhibits to Sturgis and hailed as the premier motorcycle photographer, celebrated his 30th year photographing Sturgis with his 10th annual motorcycles as art exhibition entitled Eternal Combustion-30 in the Wind” based on the explosion of interest and the passion for custom motorcycles seen over the last 30 years. His display, set at the gallery exhibit area at the Legendary Buffalo Chip included 30 custom bikes built by 15 teams, something that showed their relationship to another. Pairings included Arlen Ness & Paul Yaffe, Donnie Smith & Brian Klock, Eddie Trotta & Todd Silicato, Kevin Baas & his Kennedy High School Chopper Class. Lichter also had photographs on display from as far back as 1978, many had never been seen before.

Proceeds from the Legends Ride will be donated to Sky Ranch for Boys at Camp Crook and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. The money raised for Sky Ranch will help rebuild horse barns and corrals at the center for troubled youths. Bill Walsh who has been associated with the ranch for 50 years, stated, “We have 43 children we keep here at the ranch.” “One time I took 12 kids on an overnight horse-packing trip. 6 of the kids had killed somebody. Do you know who they killed? They killed the guy who was beating up on their mother. That’s the kinds of situations these kids come from. We had a kid the other day, he was totally abused his whole life. He didn’t trust anybody. He went out to the coral to feed the horses and he had six horses come and nuzzle him. That’s the first time this kid has ever felt loved by anybody or anything. That is part of our therapy.” Dave Davis representing The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum said their portion of the funds will be used to carry on the history of motorcycling and the rally. President of The Legendary Buffalo Chip, Rod Woodruff said, “We should all be proud of bikers because bikers are the most giving people anywhere. You meet the nicest people on 2-wheels.” The big - ticket item was a custom bike designed by world - renowned bike builder, Michael Prugh and built by students at Western Dakota Technical Institute. It brought $25,000 at auction. Tuesday included a ride through Spearfish Canyon, a trip to Lehman Trikes to test ride a Victory Crossbow, some 24 oz ribeyes courtesy some great friends that came in from Midland, SD and some commemorative 2010 Sturgis Gentleman Jack! www.thunderroadskentucky.com

We didn’t make it to Sturgis until Wednesday, but were looking forward to going with “first-timers” Willie, with his shades and long blond beard, looking like a 5-foot 2-inch, ZZ Top guy and long and lean Angie towering at over 6 feet They made quite the spectacle and we couldn’t walk a block without someone asking to take a photo. Russ and I made our way to 3rd and Lazelle for what has become an annual “must do” while in Sturgis, The AMD World Championship where competitors from around the world vie for the AMD World Championship builder title. Freddie ‘Krugger’ Bertrand is now wearing the World Champions’ ring after being named the 2010 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. At the flick of a switch the V-Rod engined bike can be transformed from a low-riding cruiser with long rake to sport bike mode with a shorter wheelbase and steeper rake. The official attendance numbers won’t be in for a couple of weeks, but estimates are coming in at about 600,000, definitely way up from the last couple of years. According to the Rapid City Journal, the official death tally for the 2010 rally hit nine. There was a bit of confusion this year about the dates. Everyone knows that Sturgis is the first full week of August, so why was it the second week? According to officials at Rally Headquarters, the rally actually starts the Monday after the first full weekend of August. lm

Wet Weather...... Hot Harleys!!

Customers brave the weather for the appreciation. While the cold rain came pouring down outside, the customers poured into the local Harley Davidson store in Bowling Green, Ky for the annual “Customer Appreciation Event”. Held on December 10, 11 & 12, one of the wettest weekends of the season, the weather didn’t keep the people from shopping for themselves and for Christmas gifts while Santa was walking about the store greeting customers and chatting with the children. Customers were treated with pizza, cookies and soft drinks in the meeting room while out in the showroom many were making their list and checking it twice. Santa reported that he had more than a few requests for HD gear, clothing and bikes. Some of Santa’s elves were even on hand to provide free gift wrapping Customers mingled around checking out new and preowned bikes, helmets, leather jackets, t-shirts and many other items on the showroom floor. The parts department was busy answering questions and the service department was scheduling appointments to bikes to be serviced. This store also provides the Rider’s Edge program for new riders or experienced riders wanting to brush up on their skills. The Bowling Green Harley Davidson store is located at 251 Cumberland Trace Road and faces Interstate 65. Store hours are Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm. You can visit them online at www.harleydavidsonbowlinggreen.com to check out the latest wheels and deals. Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com

Chaplain’s Corner By: Pastor Buck Braveangel and I want you to know we are praying daily for all bikers and their loved ones. We are praying for anyone that happens to be reading this article today. Well its 2011 biker season and our creator works in seasons in our lives. Our creator wants to bless each of you but he’s shouting “its watch time.” Most of you if you’re honest can truly say; Pastor we are always watching for something in this our natural life to happen for us. As a pastor I’m telling you today that most of you are watching for something to happen in your lives, but most of you are watching for it in the wrong places. You’ll never find what you are looking for in this natural world. Its watch time we should be looking for things above in the supernatural realm. For things that are sometimes unseen by our natural eyes. Our creator calls it faith, and in the book of Matthew we are told to have faith in our creator. Then our creator tells us to watch because he’s coming again for those who believe in him and do what he says to us in his book of love that he wrote to each of us. Yes we live in this world, but God says if we trust in God watch and do what he says, that we are not of this world. That we are now part of the kingdom of heaven and are sons and daughters of our creator. Braveangel and I urge you to watch for things above. Keep your eyes on Jesus and trust in our creator in 2011. Our creator wants to pour out his favor upon all bikers and bless them and their loved ones greatly. He wants to do all this for anyone who will trust in him and know its watch time. If you have any spiritual needs or need prayer you can contact us on our prayer line at 615-766-0838. May our creator continue to bless each of you greatly in 2011. Till next time keep the kickstand up and the wind in your face, and remember Jesus is our lord. LL&R Pastor Buck “Kentucky’s Biker Pastor” and First Lady Braveangel P.S. If you listen to your heart daily our creator will send his holy spirit to talk and instruct you so you can experience our creator’s best in your life. Love, Braveangel

A Canadian salesman checked into a futuristic hotel in Tokyo, Japan . . . Realizing he needed a haircut before the next day’s meeting, he called down to the desk clerk to ask if there was a barber on the premises. ‘I’m afraid not, sir,’ the clerk told him apologetically, ‘but down the hall from your room is a vending machine that should serve your purposes.’ Skeptical but intrigued, the salesman located the machine, inserted $15.00, and stuck his head into the opening, at which time the machine started to buzz and whirl. Fifteen seconds later the salesman pulled out his head and surveyed his reflection, which reflected the best haircut of his life. Two feet away was another machine with a sign that read; ‘Manicures, $20.00’. ‘Why not?’ thought the salesman. He paid the money, inserted his hands into the slot, and the machine started to buzz and whirl. Fifteen seconds later he pulled out his hands and they were perfectly manicured. The next machine had a sign that read, ‘This Machine Provides a Service Men Need When Away from Their Wives; 50 Cents.’ The salesman looked both ways, put fifty cents in the machine, unzipped his fly, and with some anticipation, stuck his “wanker” into the opening. When the machine started buzzing, the guy let out a shriek of agony and almost passed out. Fifteen seconds later it shut off. With trembling hands, the salesman was able to withdraw his tender unit...... which now had a button sewn neatly on the end. Harley received a parrot as a gift. The parrot cussed like a drunken sailor. Tried as he might, Harley could not get the parrot to stop cussing so raunchy and acting out. Finally, after an all-day fight and lecture to the bird, Harley, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked on the door. Then, suddenly there was total quiet. Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, Harley quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Harley’s outstretched arm and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my unforgivable behavior.” Harley was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird inquired, very softly,....... “May I be so bold as to ask what the turkey did?” 22 Thunder Roads Kentucky

‘Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl.’ The priest asks, ‘Is that you, little Eddie Hunter?’ ‘Yes, Father, it is.’ ‘And who was the girl you were with?’ ‘I can’t tell you, Father, I don’t want to ruin her reputation.’ ‘Well, Eddie, I’m sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?’ ‘I cannot say.’ ‘Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?’ ‘I’ll never tell.’ ‘Was it Cristi Capelli?’ ‘I’m sorry, but I cannot name her.’ ‘Was it Cathy Piriano?’ ‘My lips are sealed.’ ‘Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?’ ‘Please, Father, I cannot tell you.’ The priest sighs in frustration. ‘You’re very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you’ve sinned and have to atone. You can not be an altar boy now for 4 more months. Now you go and behave yourself.’ Eddie walks back to his pew, and his friend slides over and whispers, ‘What’d you get?’ ‘Four months’ vacation and five really good leads!.’ We were dressed and ready to go out for the New Years Eve Party. We did our usual ritual before going out. We put the cat in the backyard and called a cab. The taxi arrived and as we’re leaving the damn cat runs back in the house. When we go out we always have to make sure the cat is in the back yard as he has a tendency to attack the bird’s cage and gets the bird all upset, who then squawks all night and upsets the neighbors. My wife goes out to the taxi, while I went inside to catch the cat and return it to the back yard. The cat runs upstairs, with me in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, my wife doesn’t want the driver to know that the house will be empty for the night, so, she explains to the taxi driver, ‘My husband will be just a minute.....he’s just gone upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.’ The driver nods. A few minutes later, I get into the cab. ‘Sorry I took so long,’ I said, as we drove away. ‘That stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off, so I grabbed her by the neck. Then, I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked! I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!’ The cab driver then hit a parked car. January 2011

This month’s Flashback subject is a long time customer of S & G Custom Cycles but we never work on his bikes we only sell him parts. Mike Kelley is an Ole Skool biker that does his own wrenching & designing too. Kelley is a proud Southern man of Irish decent who was born in Savannah, GA and raised up & down the East coast as an Air Force brat. He moved to Lewisburg in1973 and began riding in 1977 on an odd Suzuki GT 380. These bikes had three cylinders and 2 cycle motors. His first v-twin was a 1975 Harley Sportster in 1986. He has ridden many bikes over the years & rides a sweet Shovel head bike that he built right now. In 1979 he was working at Genesco when he met a feisty lady from Giles County named Connie Holt who he married in 1981. They soon had a son, Phillip. (Phillip can be scene in the background of the photo of Kelley sitting on his 75 Sporty with his deceased pal, Jeff Fry, standing by him.) Miss Connie rides as well and was often seen cruising Middle Tenn on her white vintage Harley trike. They were often seen at bike rallies with Connie riding around with Mike on the trunk enjoying adult beverages. Or as some call it, the Drunk on the trunk! Mike recently designed and built a slick Harley 45 trike that is a tribute to our Vietnam troops. It is olive drab and has many neat pieces. My favorite part is the Master Sgt stripes cut into the rear fenders for taillights. Kelley did those with his redneck CNC machine. (A jig saw, dremil cutting tool, and old fashioned files.) You gotta admire his determination and patience on that project. They recently entered the trike in a local bike/car show and won a trophy! Way to go dude and thanks for honoring our Vietnam veterans. Salute!!!!!! If you would like to be included in this article or know someone who would please feel free to contact Rebel Ron at celticgranda2@yahoo. com, call 931-374-8368, or come see me at S & G Custom Cycles in Mule Town. NEWS BYTES NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) RIDER TRAINING TRUMPS RIDING EXPERIENCE A new study utilizing a motorcycle simulator has found that formal advanced training is better than the school of Hard Knocks regarding how a rider reacts to emergency situations on the road. A Triumph mounted on a custom rig designed and built at the University Nottingham’s Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics & Rider Human Factors in England was used to investigate the attitudes, behaviors and skills of different types of riders according to th eir level of experience and training, with simulation software projecting different riding scenarios onto a large screen in front of the rider. Three groups; novice, experienced and those who had taken advanced motorcycle training, were put through identical scenarios on the simulator as well as other tasks in the laboratory to test aspects of their hazard perception and behavior. The researchers discovered that experience on its own does not necessarily make riders safer on the road, while those riders who had taken advanced motorcycle safety training used better road positioning to anticipate and respond to hazards, kept to urban speed limits, and actually made better progress through bends than the other groups of novice and experienced bikers. “This is one of the most in-depth studies of its kind ever conducted,” said Dr. Alex Stedmon from the Human Factors Research Group. “Whilst experience seems to help develop rider skills to an extent, advanced training appears to develop deeper levels of awareness, perception and responsibility,” Stedmon noted. “It also appears to make riders better urban riders and quicker, smoother and safer riders in rural settings.” NHTSA STILL PUSHING MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS NATIONWIDE The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ignored congressional requests to halt or delay a plan to implement and fund motorcycle-only checkpoints nationwide. The first federally-funded checkpoints, dubbed “roadside motorcycle safety checkpoints,” will be launched by the Georgia Department of Public Safety, via a NHTSA grant to the Georgia State Patrol. NHTSA has implemented the checkpoint funding plan despite being asked by members of Congress not to fund the program until the merits were explained. NHTSA has requested applications from law enforcement agencies across the country to conduct “safety checks” that specifically target motorcyclists to pull aside for a lengthy inspection of their vehicle, equipment and paperwork. The New York State Police have been conducting motorcycleonly checkpoints since 2007, often targeting major motorcycle events such as Americade. Seeking a legal remedy to stop the constitutionally questionable roadblocks, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitchell Proner of NYC has filed a class action lawsuit against the NYSP and New York State on behalf of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). Proner believes the Federal Court will agree that the stops are designed primarily for law enforcement purposes as opposed to 26 Thunder Roads Kentucky

public safety purposes. “Rather than promoting any legitimate public safety concern, the checkpoints are intended to harass and intimidate motorcyclists attempting to attend motorcycle events thereby depriving them of their First Amendment right to freedom of assembly as well as their Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights to due process, equal protection and freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.” NTSB CALLS FOR STATES TO REQUIRE HELMETS The National Transportation Safety Board stated on Tuesday, November 19, that all states should require riders to wear federally approved helmets. Christopher A. Hart, the NTSB’s vice chairman, called motorcycle accidents ”a public health issue.” and said that helmet laws have been added for the first time to the NTSB’s “Most Wanted List” of safety improvement priorities. The list is considered a powerful tool by which the NTSB forces legislative change. But highway safety laws are largely left up to the states, which have been increasingly resistant to many federal recommendations, and the transportation agency’s appeal comes at a time when motorcycle deaths have actually been on the decrease since 2009. This is not the first time there has been federal pressure exerted on states to pass helmet laws. In the late 1960s, Congress threatened to withhold highway funding for states failing to adopt universal helmet laws, and within a few years almost every state had a helmet mandate. But by the late 1970s, political resistance and pressure from motorcycle groups convinced Congress to break the link between motorcycle laws and federal highway funds, and over half the states repealed their helmet laws. In 1991, Congress decided to try again, offering safety grants to states that enforced helmet and seatbelt laws. States that didn’t enforce such laws had three percent of their federal highway money redirected to their highway safety programs. Still, only two states re-instituted helmet laws and by 1995 the federal effort was again overturned and five more states soon repealed their helmet laws. Today, only 20 states require all riders to wear helmets, and last year more state legislatures considered laws to repeal helmet laws than to enact them. Forcing states to implement safety regulations is not territory the safety board want to enter, according to Steve Blackistone, NTSB’s state and local government relations specialist, who said “We are not prescriptive; we cannot mandate implementation.” But on the same day as the NTSB proclamation, the insurance industry advocacy group Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety called upon Congress to observe the NTSB recommendation and “enact federal legislation that would result in all states adopting all-rider helmet use laws.” NEW JERSEY ESTABLISHES STRINGENT GUIDELINES FOR NEW RIDERS A measure sponsored by Senator Nicholas J. Sacco, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, which would establish safety guidelines for new motorcycle riders in the Garden State was approved by the Assembly recently by a vote of 67-7. January 2011

NEWS BYTES The bill, S-736, would enact several motorcycle safety regulations, including a tiered licensing provision. Under the bill, if a person is issued a motorcycle license for a vehicle with a smaller-size engine -- less than 231 cubic centimeters -- they would be legally prohibited from operating a motorcycle with an engine displacement of more than 500 cc. Senator Sacco said that this provision would ensure that new motorcycle riders are restricted from operating vehicles with engines that are too powerful for that driver’s skill level. Among other provisions, the bill would also require all applicants under the age of 18 to complete a motorcycle safety program as a condition for licensure or endorsement. The bill was approved by the Senate by a vote of 31-3 on August 23, but must be returned to consider Assembly amendments which were largely technical in nature. If approved in the Senate, it would head to the Governor to be signed into law. MOTORCYCLE SALES DOWN, RIDERSHIP UP Motorcycle sales continue to be hard hit, despite the declared end to the recession, but according to the Motorcycle Industry Council there are other indicators that point to a brighter future for the twowheel industry. Although year-to-date market data reveals an 18.3% drop in new unit sales, tire sales are up 6.6% in 2010 versus 2009, indicating motorcyclists are still enthusiastic about the sport and riding. In addition, motorcycle miles travelled increased by “approximately 5% last year, some 1.3 billion more miles than in 2008,” according to the MIC’s 2009 Motorcycle Owner Survey. “In many ways, we are better poised for a comeback than ever,” said Ty van Hooydonk, communications director for the council. CHINA BECOMES THE WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE PRODUCER China has now overtaken Japan as the largest producer of motorcycles in the world. Yearly, 50 million motorcycles are produced worldwide, and China now produces at least 27.5 million of that figure or a little more than 50% of the total world production. China has already taken over the top spot in world automobile production by producing more cars than Japan and the U.S. combined. Interestingly, some historic American companies like HarleyDavidson are moving ahead for plans to produce motorcycles in China, but whether they will be exported to the U.S. or simply sold in this Asian market is not quite known yet. The city of Chongqing has become China’s motorcycle production center, with more than 10 million motorcycles a year coming out of this modern city alone. In fact, four of five of the largest Chinese motorcycle brands that produce over 1 million units a year come out of this city. China has more than 130 motorcycle brands. Expect to see more powerful and modern motorcycles coming from China as this nation seeks to become the largest and most powerful economy in the world. OLDER BIKERS HAVE MORE SEX “Older single bikers are putting down more miles than their married counterparts, if you know what we mean,” reported www. clutchandchrome.com about a recently released AARP sex www.thunderroadskentucky.com

survey. Although the study wasn’t specifically aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts, with a large part of riding demographics firmly in the age bracket surveyed, the study can make riders look at each other in a slightly different light. Aside from older riders having more sex than may be generally considered, results from the AARP sex survey, “Sex, Romance, and Relationships: AARP Survey of Midlife and Older Adults”, also contradicted popular opinion with singles age 45+ showing a higher satisfaction rate and having more sex than married couples in the same age group. But some stereotypes rang true in the AARP study, such as which sex made sex a priority; Men are more than five times as likely as women with 45% vs. 8% to say they think of sex once or more every day, and men also rank sex higher on the list of what makes for a high quality of life. And if any further correlation needed to be drawn between the AARP study and motorcycle enthusiasts, the final conclusion seems to draw a pretty solid line. Just as with riding, the largest predictor of sexual satisfaction is the number of times, or the frequency a respondent gets in the saddle. The number of people who consider themselves satisfied rockets to 84% if they “ride” more than once a week while the number falls to 59% for those who only “hit the road” twice a month. WEIRD NEWS: HEAD GAMES In Lagos, Nigeria, motorcycle taxis called “okada” are so dangerous in that local hospitals have special orthopedic wards meant just for people who have suffered accidents while riding them. So you’d think a law requiring passengers to wear helmets would be welcomed. But it turns out that, for many Nigerians, the only thing scarier than a motorcycle taxi is a motorcycle helmet. Many people refuse to wear them out of fear of juju, or supernatural powers. Some fret that previous passengers may have put nefarious juju spells on the helmets to steal someone’s good fortune, or to make a person disappear in order to be used in a sacred ritual. “Our people are quite superstitious about anything dealing with their head,” says Ralph Ibuzo, who created the “Original Lapa Guard”, a cloth cap that he claims can protect wearers from disease and sudden disappearance. “People believe that if you put on a helmet, [others] can take away your brain, or your good luck,” he told the Wall Street Journal, so the hygienic cap provides a thin layer of separation between the head and a helmet full of potential trouble. Aside from preventing paranormal paranoia, Mr. Ibuzo also has the law on his side as this sub-Saharan city enacted a traffic regulation last year that requires okada passengers to don helmets. But despite efforts at enforcement by city officials and traffic police, most passengers refuse to wear them out of concern about juju, widely feared throughout West Africa. Chaplain’s Corner do well and the other side of you is a killer? Thirdly , the next sets of twins were Esau & Jacob. In Gen.25: 22 “And the children struggled together within her.” But these twins were as opposite as day & night both in appearance and life styles. Jacob was a deceiver and tricked his brother not only out of his birth right but also tricked him out of the blessing from their father. Jacob not only deceived his brother but his father as well. Esau said “the days of mourning my father are over: then I will slay my brother.” Now one of this set of twins is a deceiver and the other is a killer. Which level of twin As I researched God’s Word regarding twins, I found are you at? some interesting discoveries. Thomas was one of The Thomas level : A doubled minded, habitual Jesus’ disciples and his name in the Hebrew and doubter, a pessimist and a skeptic? Greek means twin. Did you know that a lot of bible The Cain & Able level : One of you is real good and the scholars believe that “Cain & Able” were twins other is a killer? (Gen.4:1-2 )? Esau & Jacob were twins ( Gen.25 ). The Esau & Jacob level : Where the both of you are First , take a look at Thomas. History doesn’t have any evidence of Thomas ever having a twin but when bad, one is a liar & deceiver and the other is a killer? When most people come to Church they always bring people called him, they called him “twin.” Have you the good twin Able. It is the Cain, Esau, and Jacob, ever known someone that had two sides to them, the bad twins that I need to minister to. Even the never knowing which one will show up? I have seen couples date each other only showing their good twin, doubting Thomas will come around when exposed to enough of God’s Word. In John 20:19-31 we read then after the honeymoon is over the evil twin comes out. Yes you have a twin and your twin looks like you, the account of when Jesus appeared to the disciples after His crucifixion. They were all there but one and wears the same size clothes as you, sleeps in your that one was Thomas. This is where Thomas gets bed, goes to your job, and goes to your church when his biker name Doubting Thomas, which is really you go. The American Indians have a saying: “ You have an evil dog and a good dog inside of you, if they unfair because he wasn’t Doubting Thomas at all, he get into a fight which one will win? The answer is “The was Discouraged Thomas. Thomas, like the other disciples, had given their all to this Jesus Movement. one you feed the most!” Thomas, like the rest of the people, thought that Jesus Secondly , take a look at these twins Cain & Able. Cain was the evil twin killing his brother Able the good would set up an Earthly Kingdom . That is the same twin. As a result one died and the other was banished, problem today. We Christians are more interested so the parents lost both of their children. When one of in our own earthly kingdom than God’s Kingdom. you is in trouble, both of you are in trouble. Do you see Christians are more interested in our fleshly needs yourself in this set of twins? One side of you wants to over Spiritual needs. Now all of Thomas’ dreams are as dead as Jesus’ body. Some of us have tried to live the Christian lifestyle, going to church, giving our money, singing in the choir, ministering the Word of God, only to have a tragedy in our lives discourage us and we walk away from the church. But the one thing Thomas did right……he came back. Thomas drug his discouraged, doubting self back to church and saw the resurrected Jesus for himself! More on this next month! So until next time, “Keep your kickstand up and your face in the wind.” Pastor Ron Baptiste Founder of Covenant Confirmers Ministries Inc. www.covenantconfirmers. org Founder of the Tennessee Biker Medical Clinic www.tennesseebikermedicalclinic. org Tennessee Confederation of Clubs State Chaplain www.tenncoc.homestead.com National Board Member of NCOM Christian Unity Counsel (Pastor Ron’s messages can now be heard and downloaded off of the website. by Caryle Lorra Smith; Photos by Brian Henry Sturgis. “Where is it?” I asked. My friend proceeded to tell me that it lies in the Southwest corner of South Dakota and it is his favorite place to go every year. Such an odd sounding place, is it the name of someone with historical significance to that area? I am still investigating but Sturgis is the Atlantis of the motorcycle world because after the Sturgis rally all the residents come back to their village of approximately 6,000 (after a two week exodus to make way for the rally ) and then daily life gets back to normal. Unlike the lost city of Atlantis, Sturgis rises from the depths yearly and transforms this somnolent but sweet village into a mythical, magical, monumental, mesmerizing nirvana for the two wheeled population. There aren’t any direct flights to Rapid City from San Francisco so this was a bit of a logistical move. The Pilot spoke over the loud speaker and even though we were about to land at the Rapid City airport, he brilliantly renamed it Sturgis with a deepening growl as though he were the captain of a pirate ship..arrrggghhh! The passengers clapped and roared with delight. The hair stood up on the back of my neck and at this point I could smell it and now I needed to get on the ground to see it…..feel it! My friend picked me up at the small but quaint airport handing me a pink and black hat with the Sturgis Rally 2010 imprinted on the front. It is now my favorite hat and I wear it proudly as though it were a tiara representing my reigning status as a ’Sturgis Virgin’. The Rapid City airport has friendly employees each holding 2-3 jobs to make it seamless. On my flight home, the girl taking my ticket grabbed all the bags placing them on a tram and then loaded them carefully onto the plane as though she knew there were Sturgis souvenirs that needed to be treasured. After her important position ended , she ran back to the front of the ticket counter making sure each passenger was well taken care of and off to their destination. This was a new one for me, motorcycles park free and have their own corral right up front. This should be encouraged at every airport. The residents of Sturgis love the ‘Bikers’ realizing their importance financially to this small town. Their schools are either new or refurbished and I am sure the money issued from the rallies have contributed to this community wisely with better public services 34 Thunder Roads Kentucky

and the educational needs of their future residents and leaders. ‘Bikers’ bring very few items with them to the rallies. How can they? They are limited to the basics so they need to buy everything when they arrive…. food, clothing, laundry services, housing, camping equipment, concerts,..and oh yes…….BEER! This was my first time on the back of a bike meandering through the Black Hills taking in the tourist attractions and my first rally. Bikers have always been a mystery to me, tattoos preferred with this group. Funny, traveling through the French Polynesian Islands all of the men are tattooed and it is revered, masculine and they are the males sought by the women of the culture for fertility. I have been told there are two types of people in the world, those who have tattoos and those who do not. It is as though a tattoo symbolizes your capabilities, manliness and with the women, a tattoo let’s everyone know that they understand them (the Bikers) and a part of this biker community. They are tribal but friendly.. Women are celebrated and adorned at the rallies - they are considered sexy, a word banned from many conversations in the non-Sturgis world. Skin is the largest and can be the sexiest organ of the human body. We hide it as much as possible, most of the time but, at Sturgis, this organ is the ‘piece de resistance’. for the bikers. A wet T-shirt contest was on the top of my list of things to see.. Several contestants were picked from the audience along with girls who were obviously in some type of the entertainment industry stepped onto a platform. Men were scattered throughout the room at small tables drinking beer, enjoying their time and waiting for the wet T- shirt contest to begin ‘biting at the bit’ to catch a glimpse.. Once the tops came off (with pasties) the men were practically on the stage snapping photos left and right with their tidy little cameras to show their buddies back home what they have missed. The women were beautiful, sexy and quite proud to show off their stuff. Pervert Road is now a part of my vocabulary. A road full of perverts? Well, your imagination could run wild however, Pervert Road is another way the bikers will celebrate women by adorning them with beaded necklaces. Shimmering, colorful, ornate gifts carefully placed over their head bejeweling her as an honor for misplacing her bra and top in a parade that you will not see on any Main street, USA. This event takes place every evening at the Glencoe campground January 2011

where we nestled in with everyone else tent to tent, literally. It was great fun but if you have any ideas about romantic interlude you had better pitch your tent far from the maddening crowd otherwise you will have quite an audience with standing ovations. The sound you will hear t throughout this rally is the sound of Thunder from the Harleys and it is a tune well played. Curfew noise are not words used in Sturgis and it was a new sound for me.. Time goes by quickly when you are having an enormous amount of fun so I missed the Buffalo Chip and Pee Wee Herman excitement opting for Full Throttle Saloon. Wow! I was amazed at this adult amusement park or rather circus for the biker community. Everywhere you turned something was happening the Flaunt girls were with their huge smiles, sexy attire and well rehearsed dance moves. They were friendly to the bikers not acting like Divas from my bird’s eye view.. Angie from Angieland sat on my head because “It is all about the arse’, there were burn-outs, a vertical Bus as though it had landed there from the sky, retro motel signs , bathtubs full of beer, tattooing, concerts, singing, pole dancing and food stands. FTS has created quite an empire and I was impressed with their adventure in adult entertainment. It was an empire! During the day my friend filled my head with the most beautiful scenery this Nation has to offer. I live and work in the Monterey Bay area where the Pacific Ocean meets the landscape and it is spectacular but South Dakota was absolutely breathtaking. Once I was able to view Mount Rushmore I was in awe. This job must have been painstaking to create such a magnificent, outstanding monument for our Country and my eyes filled up with pride understanding the importance of this destination and why the biker community chose this area to celebrate and rally yearly. Next stop Deadwood reminding me of the small mountain communities of California like Sonora, Jamestown, Coulterville, etc but Deadwood has gambling and that always brings out good clean addictive behaviors. The one arm bandits were hard to resist. Deadwood is reminiscent of the wild, wild west where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane made their fame. We stumbled upon the Deadwood Tobacco Company and Cigar bar on Main Street (cigars and beer - what a concept). It is located downstairs in this 110 year old building where they housed the original jail. The lovely cigar aficionado Susie was there to greet us, graciously allowing us to view the largest humidor in South Dakota. She took us to the back door that once led to the cat houses on the second floor of the entire block. There are rumors of historic Chinese opium tunnels throughout this area forged by the Chinese when they were not allowed to be seen on the streets but we were running out of time…. that is another story and feeling a bit dehydrated, we needed a beer. Restaurants, pubs and temporary BBQ stands were scattered throughout the Black Hills beckoning the www.thunderroadskentucky.com

bikers in with great food and spirits. If you like BBQ, the rally towns will serve your needs well with a variety of meats cooked to perfection with tasty sauces along with the classic American complementary side dishes delighting anyone’s palate. I searched for tofu dishes but not here! At this writing, this was the 70th anniversary rally with approximately 500,000 bikers in attendance. Even though it was hard to get around the downtown area at times there were no disagreements, tempers flaring wherever we roamed with the bike. My friend knew all of the back roads, alleyways, etc. to get us through crowds avoiding streets turned into a sea of overheated motorcycles but that was exciting when we were submerged with everyone forcing small talk from the excitement and camaraderie.. This was his 15th voyage from his home in Texas to the rally and fortunately , for me, he needed a passenger once he arrived…a Sturgis virgin…. introducing someone new to his favorite destination. A sign over one of the pubs we enjoyed stated: “You know you are a biker when your dream vacation is Sturgis.” That’s my friend. Bikes, Babes and Beer or is it Beer, Bikes and oh well… the three B’s and the order changes based upon a biker’s current view at the moment He navigates his way to Sturgis yearly as though it were a religious pilgrimage. As with everything, the more exposure the more acceptance. I live in California, acceptance to everything is inevitable. The group of bikers I had the opportunity to hang out with were friendly and ‘larger than life’ characters right out of a steamy novel you can’t put down. They were all interesting and a part of our culture.. the bikers …true Americana! They are a powerful bunch however, lawmakers in California are inching them out in the area where I reside with proposal to prohibit all noise and rallies. This comes from the ‘not in my neighborhood’ attitude that has plagued California for years. This adventure became reality just because I wanted a ride. As the saying goes “Be careful what you wish for, it may come true”. Sturgis should be on your bucket list, it was on mine and affording me the opportunity to understand the ‘biker’ community instead of judging them by misguided information. I will lose my reign as the ‘Sturgis Virgin’ at next year’s rally, however….I am keeping the hat!
