Hey everyone. Hard to believe it’s October already and this year has come and gone so quickly. The holiday season will be upon us before we know it and another year will begin. We’ve got a few things going on this month so be sure to check the calendar for more info. As always we here at Thunder Roads Kentucky would like to thank all our loyal readers and advertisers for keeping this little mag going for so long. Take care and ride safe, until next time.

It seems like we just ran through the entire summer, in a week or two. Thoughts seem to be changing into the fall and winter events that will take place here in the Mid-West. Before we get into the schedule of things that are coming up, Let me say that the fall riding season seems to be every ones favorite time of the year, I hope we all have a safe, long smooth fall riding season! As the temperature starts to go down, we all need to think about our riding gear, you leave the house in the middle of the day and it feels pretty warm, now with the days getting shorter you just may get caught out on a cool evening wishing you had switched some of your riding apparel around in the saddlebags. So take a moment and check what is left in there from all the summer parties and those 90 degree Saturday midnight rides home, You might need more than the Koozie and sweatband during the weeks to come. Western KY will have some good fall events; I have tried to keep up with most of them, even though my website calendar is not complete! Here are the ones I would like to remind you to look into visiting. First off sign up for all the area Harley-Dealers email newsletters, they should be a constant source of off-season events. Second I would say make sure you keep your issues of Thunder Roads handy, TRM will be hosting a second annual TOYS FOR TOTS Christmas party in Owensboro during the month of November. Last year this was the second largest USMC TOYS FOR TOTS event in the Bluegrass, and this year John, my wife Janie & I want to make this event even bigger and better. Plans are in place and the dates have been set November 19th & 20th In Owensboro, KY at the Ramada Inn Hotel. Special room rates for the weekend are $59.00 per night. Last year over 600 people stayed and enjoyed the single night event, and this year it will be two nights, so you better call and book those rooms! Louisville will be hosting some indoor events, The Easyrider Show will be making a one-day stop in November. And in January a new indoor show will be in town, Cyclefest USA will be doing a two-day show, these guys are new to the Louisville market, but they are not new to the entertainment and motorcycle industry. So check them out! You will not be disappointed! Lain Promotions has not released any information on the 4th annual Evansville Indiana Kentuckiana Motorcycle Showdown, But you will want to watch for that event. It is always a good dealer and trade show, with a fair price. I am sure there will be an announcement coming soon. Well I guess I better wrap up this month’s article, I hope those of you who are going to Daytona FL. for Biketoberfest have a great time. Keep supporting the two wheel industry, all of our lifestyles depend on it! Jimmy & Janie Rhoades

HOGROCK RIVER RALLY Cave-In-Rock, IL by Bob Nadeau Like I’ve told you many times in the past, this is the hottest little party in the Midwest. And it was hot at this year’s June rally. I am glad it was hot because that meant more people (women) got naked and more people (women) were using the clothes optional pond, and more were letting Smitty the Titty Painter paint them. Some took their tops off and got painted and some got naked and got painted. I have two pictures here to show you. One topless and one naked. Sorry Smitty. I had to Photo Shop them to get them in the magazine. It didn’t hurt that both women are beautiful. What I like about HogRock is that the nudity is in a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. HogRock has three stages with music, contests, bands, and shows going on most of the day and half the night. But the main attraction, in my humble opinion, was Bag Lady Sue. She drew one hell of a crowd. Bag Lady Sue was staying at the Rose Hotel (bed and breakfast) in Elizabeth Town where I was staying, so I got to meet her up close and personal. She is as much a character off stage as she is on. She treated everyone at the hotel like an old friend. Check out the picture with Bag Lady Sue, Sandy, who is the Rose Hotel inn keeper, and a bunch of her guests at the Rose Hotel. If you’re looking for a great place to stay, call Sandy at 618-287-2872, or www.rosehotelbb.com. But don’t call her about HogRock. You get that information at www.hogrock. com The Fall Rally is October 7th-10th 2010. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again for all you new readers. This is a great party in a great location. It’s right on the Ohio River and you can ride the levee that runs along the river or ride the ferry across the river. There are also several state parks in Illinois. I’m like a kid. I love to ride my motorcycle onto the ferry and take a nice slow ride across the river to Kentucky then take back roads through Amish country, over to Sturgis, Kentucky, then over the bridge and through the woods to Old Shawneetown, Illinois and Hog Daddy’s Saloon. Then it’s over to the Garden of the Gods with its short walk and breath taking views. E-Town is next where you buy your beer to take back to HogRock for a long night of fun and games. Oh, let’s not forget about the vendors. There were lots of food vendors with food that was actually good! And there were tattoo artists, glass blowers with pipes that I have no idea what they could be used for, and Nancy had her tie dyed clothes available. Smitty the Titty Painter was there as well as Robin, The Do-Rag Lady, vendors with leather goods, vendors offering motorcycle repair and many more. All are a big part of a good rally. Life’s short. Have fun. Bob www.thunderroadskentucky.com

Edgar Müller was born in Mülheim/Ruhr on 10 July 1968. He grew up in the rural city of Straelen on the western edge of Germany. His fascination with painting began in his childhood, with paintings of rural scenes of Straelen. He went to the high school in the neighboring town of Geldern, where an international competition of street painters took place. Inspired by the transitory works of art which met him on his way to school, Edgar Müller decided to enter the competition. He took part for the first time at the age of 16, going on to win the competition, aged 19, with a copy of the famous “Jesus at Emmaus “ (Caravaggio). In the years that followed, he entered many other international competitions. Since 1998 Edgar Müller has held the title of ‘maestro madonnari’ (master street painter), born by only a few artists worldwide. The title is awarded at the world’s largest street painting festival, called The Grazie Festival, which is held in the small pilgrim town of Grazie in Italy. Around the age of 25, Müller decided to devote himself completely to street painting. He travelled all over Europe, making a living with his transitory art. He gave workshops at schools and was a co-organizer and committee member for various street painting festivals. Müller set up the first (and so far only) Internet board for street painters in Germany – a forum designed to promote solidarity between German street painters. Edgar Müller opened a studio in the street. He presents people with the great works of old masters, drawing his perfect copies at the observers’ feet. Müller invites his audience to share his fascination with the old masters art, helping them to gain an in depth understanding of the old master’s view of the world. Despite attending many courses with well-known artists and extensive studies in the field of communication design, Edgar is actually an autodidact. He is always looking for new forms through which 8 Thunder Roads Kentucky

to express himself. Inspired by three-dimensional illusion paintings (particularly by the works of Kurt Wenner and Julian Beever) he is now pursuing this new art form and creating his own style. Because of his grounding in traditional painting and modern communication, Müller uses a more simple and graphic language for his art. He paints over large areas of urban public life and gives them a new appearance, thereby challenging the perceptions of passers-by. The observer becomes a part of the new scenery offered. While going about their daily life, people change the painting’s statement just by passing through the scene. Edgar Müller’s extraordinary art has been widely covered in print and digital media. SCOOTMODS MAKING THE METRIC BIKES BETTER HERE IN THE BLUEGRASS

This summer on one of my many stops by Owensboro’s Boatman Powersports, the Honda-Yamaha-KawasakiPolaris Dealer, I happened to meet a young man who was working on a mock-up set of forward controls. Now I can imagine what your thinking before we get into this, “Yea another set of bench top homemade peg relocation brackets” Not this time, this guy had some of the best looking after market, billet pegs and Collapsible peg mounts that I had ever seen for metric customs. Within a few days I had to call and follow my instincts, you see for me, it is all about the motorcycling industry and what companies here in Kentucky are doing to impact the lifestyle in a Positive way. I was on my way south out of Owensboro, “just a few miles” to Utica KY. As I drove up to the shop, I realized these guys were real, and this product was going to be something every metric custom wanted to see. There was a Honda Shadow spirit near the door with “Scootmods” production and proto-type parts on display. The Crew at Scootmods” consists of Three employees, Beau Bigger, Owner/Design Machinist. Joe O’Bryan, Co-Owner and Marketing/ Sales Director. John Bethel, Finishing/Polishing Specialist. Theses three Guys Design, manufacture & ship all of the “Scootmods” products, that are shipped all over the World, over 1000 sets of forward controls and other accessories were ship during the last year, “right out of Western KY” and all their products have been developed since the shop started in 2003. What started as a ride on a Honda Rebel, with Beau needing more legroom has turned into what they are today? The entire raw product is American Made. Even the fasteners that they use in production or supply with the kits, are good ole “USA” materials, Joe Mentioned that one of the furthest routine suppliers is located in Iowa, I hope 10 Thunder Roads Kentucky

you understand my point “These Guys Take Pride In making this a Kentucky Based Product”. You can find more information about “Scootmods” online by visiting their website www. scootmods.net or their Ebay store at: stores.ebay.com/ scootmods I hope you take time to look into this Kentucky based Company, You will be very pleased that you can buy a complete forward control kit for your Honda, or Yamaha for less than most of the Nationally know big companies would even consider selling their goods. They also Manufacture Side Mount License plate kits, lowering struts for the rear of your bike. If you want to know about the capabilities of the shop, they do produce components for companies such as LOCKMASTERS. They manufacture some real intricate Lock Jigs used all over the world along with a complete Punch tooling set sold to locksmiths. There are many small companies in Kentucky! However, it is always a great honor to share one working in our state to make the riding industry better. Was talking w/ a woman who is actually an experienced cook, but she said she had never prepared “countryfried” or “chicken-fried” (both terms means the same method of cooking) pork chops or steak, which was amazing to me, so here’s the simple recipe. COUNTRY-FRIED PORK CHOPS 101 8 Bone-In Pork Chops (Center Cut) 2 X-Large Eggs 2 Cups of Whole Milk 2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour Dash of Nutmeg Salt & Pepper to Taste A quality margarine, such as “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter”. Don’t use cheap margarine or else you’ll dang sure have cheap tasting chops. Let your chops sit out about 15 mins. to get to room temperature while you pour your milk into a glass pie plate or any bigger bottomed, shallow bowl. Crack your two eggs into your milk and beat gently w/ a fork. Add your dash of nutmeg. Now pour your 2 cups of flour into a higher-sided, big bottomed bowl. Get as large a skillet as you got (I always use one of those long, electric skillets), as then I can do all my pork chops at one time. Go ahead and take a chop in left hand and dip into milk bath. I always poke at the meat a bit while in milk bath to tenderize it and let it soak up, then again take your left hand and transfer the chop over to your right hand mid-air and then proceed onto the flour bowl. You keep your dip hand and flour hand separate so that you don’t end up with two gooey hands and drag a bunch of flour into milk bath. But while your chop is in the flour, pat it well and coat it good on one side then flip over and pat it again to coat well. Place on a plate and finish up dunking and dredging the remaining chops. Get your skillet up to medium hot, add 2 big tablespoons of margarine and melt down till sizzling. Arrange your chops so they all fit in your skillet but there’s plenty of room and no parts of chop are overlapping other chops. Salt & pepper uncooked side and then, gently life after one side has cooked for apprx. 4 minutes and make sure they are a true, golden brown, flip them, and salt & pepper the other side. You may need to add a few more pats of margarine around sides and kinda’ work up under chops to ensure that the just flipped side gets as evenly golden brown as the original side. Remove from skillet when done and plate up right away. Serve w/ fried apples or apple fritters or anything? apples! I’ll take a country20 Thunder Roads Kentucky

fried pork chop over a steak any day of the week! *Note* If you dont have a long, electric skillet, then just do 2 batches, but be sure you place first batch in oven on low to keep hot. Don’t foil tent them or they’ll lose all their crispiness and just end up with a mushy top. SIMPLE AS 1,2,3......CHEESE “BISKITS” Only 3 ingredients: 1-1/4 Cups *Bisquick Brand Boxed Biscuit Mix 1/2 Cup Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese 1/2 Cup Water Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place a silicone pad on a cookie sheet. Combine the biscuit mix and cheese in a small bowl. Add the water and stir until combined. Don’t over-mix. Just combine. Dough will be a bit moist. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto silicone pad and leave enough room for them to expand. Bake for about 10 minutes until they firm up but are nice and brown. Serve with honey butter. Just that simple, just that quick! *These are our daughter’s all-time fave. Hence, her nickname...”Biskit”. GRANNY OLLIE’S BUTTERMILK PIE 1-1/2 Cups Sugar 1 Cup Buttermilk 1/2 Cup Bisquick Biscuit Mix 1/2 Cup Real Butter; melted 1-1/2 tsps. Pure Vanilla Extract 3 Large Eggs Get your oven up to 350 degrees. Grease or spray a 9-inch pie pan. Put all ingredients in a medium bowl and beat for 1 minute with handheld electric mixer or if you don’t have a hand mixer, just beat by hand until all ingredients mixed well. Pour mixture into prepared pie pan and bake for apprx. 50 minutes. Insert a toothpick into center and if it comes out clean.....it’s done! Cool for 5 minutes and let pie solidify and firm up. Slice and serve good and warm. Take a can of Extra Creamy Whipcream and make little flower dollops all over the top and place a rasberry or blueberry in center of each dollop. This is truly a little slice of Heaven from my Granny Ollie, up in Heaven.

The ride alone raised $10,000 and ticket sales on the 2010 Super Glide Custom raffle brought in another $42,000 for a grand total of $52,000 for the Special Olympic program in Kentucky. A ten class bike show was held and judged by Special Olympic athletes with Ray Glave of Winchester taking Best of Show with his tricked out, supercharged V-Rod. Johnny Caudill of Owingsville was the lucky winner of the bike raffle, buying his ticket from Robin Costin, a first year Ride To Win committee member. In all this years ride was a huge success thanks to the big hearts of area bikers. Seems no matter how bad the economy, bikers will still open their wallets and hearts to such deserving children as the Special Olympic athletes. The ride will again be held the first Saturday in August of next year, so if you missed this year’s ride, try to make it next year. Thanks again to all who participated this year and in past Win a 2010 years. Without you this wouldn’t be the huge success it always is. Hope to see you all again next year. Three vampires walk into a bar. The waitress comes up to them and asks them what they’ll have. ? The first vampire says, (Transylvanian accent inferred) “I’ll have a glass of O Positive.” The second vampire says, “I’ll have a glass of O Negative.” The third vampire says, “I’m the designated driver. I’ll just have a glass of plasma.” The waitress turns toward the bartender and yells, “Gimme’ two bloods and one blood lite!” A couple was invited to a swanky masked Halloween Party. She got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed, and there was no need of his good time being spoiled bynot going. So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for one hour, awakened without pain, and as it was still early, she decided to go to the party. In as much as her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every hot chick he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife moved on up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he lmmediately turned his attention to her. They were both getting turned on so agreed to go out to her car for a “quickie”. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would have for his wild behavior. She was sitting up reading when he came in and asked what kind of a time he had. He said, “Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you’re not there.” Then she asked, “Did you dance much?” He replied, “Honestly, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But I’ll tell you what, the guy I loaned my costume to damn sure had a real good time between all the dancing, groping, and trips to the parking lot!”. Q: Why did the vampire need mouthwash? A: She had bat breath. Q: Why wasn’t the vampire working? A: He was on his coffin break. Q: Why did the vampire’s lunch give her heartburn? A: It was a stake sandwich. 22 Thunder Roads Kentucky

Two guys left the bar after a long night of drinking, jumped in the car and started it up. After a couple of minutes, an old man appeared in the passenger window and tapped lightly. The passenger screamed, “Look at he window. There’s an old ghost’s face there!” The driver sped up, but the old man’s face stayed in the window. The passenger rolled his window down part way and, scared out of his wits, said, “What do you want?”The old man softly replied, “You got any tobacco?”The passenger handed the old man a cigarette and yelled, “Step on it,” to the driver, rolling up the window in terror. A few minutes later they calmed down and started laughing again. The driver said, “I don’t know what happened, but don’t worry; the speedometer says we’re doing 80 now. ”All of a sudden there was a light tapping on the window and the old man reappeared.“There he is again,” the passenger yelled. He rolled down the window and shakily said, “Yes?” “Do you have a light?” the old man quietly asked. The passenger threw a lighter out the window saying, “Step on it!”They were driving about 100 miles an hour, trying to forget what they had just seen and heard, when all of a sudden there came some more tapping. “Oh my God! He’s back!” The passenger rolled down the window and screamed in stark terror, “WHAT NOW?” The old man gently replied, “You guys want some help getting out of the mud?” One dark night Bubba & Buck were walking home after a party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery, just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.“Holy cow, Mister,” Bubba said, after catching his breath, “You scared the crap outa’ us, we thought you was a real-time, ghost! What the hell are you doing working here so late at night?” “Those idiots!” the old man grumbled. “They misspelled my damn name!” Life is good in the South. On the night of a Halloween costume party a couple were arguing, having trouble picking suitable outfits. After a while the wife got mad and stormed out of the room. Fifteen minutes later she came back completely naked except for a lemon between her legs. The husband looked at her for a moment and then stormed out of the room himself. Twenty minutes passed and then he stomped back in, completely naked, with a potato around his penis. The wife gave him a weird look, and the husband quickly replied; “If you’re going as a sour-puss, I’m going as a dictator”. October 2010

Thunder Roads Colorado Staff Member Sets Second Bonneville Land Speed Week Record

August 18, 2010 - Colorado Springs, Colorado based Team “Carpe Diem”, led by Thunder Roads Colorado Staff member Jerry Pokorny, has set a new land speed record in the 650 cc Production Vintage (pre-1956 stock motorcycle) class at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah at the internationally attended “Speed Week”. This record was set on a stock 1954 BSA A-10 “Golden Flash” averaging two runs over two days on a 3-mile track on the salt lake bed. With less than 25 miles on a new set of pistons and barrels just installed a few days prior, the team decided to hold the speed of the runs to less than half the potential for this vintage machine, thus averaging 52.202 mph for the initial record. Team owner/rider Jerry Pokorny indicated that other test runs that week indicated a “ton-up” (100mph+) potential for Speed Week in 2011, after the engine is properly run-in. The Bonneville Land Speed Week this year registered 381 cars, 178 bikes and 74 Class Changes; of which 486 Vehicles produced 183 Daily Records consisting of 109 Cars, 74 Bikes and a total of 158 Event Records accumulated over 2,852 runs. Racers included entrants from North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and many other parts of the world making this truly an international “Olympics” of land speed racing. www.thunderroadskentucky.com

In 2008, team “Carpe Diem” set a Bonneville Land Speed Week record for the 350 cc Production Vintage class on a stock 1945 Triumph 3HW (ex-military dispatch riders bike). Pokorny noted, “With so many classes of competition allowed by the organizers, there is a place for every special interest. Since my passion is old vintage stock motorcycles, I have focused on getting the maximum performance from them to see if the historic road tests “in the day” can be equaled or improved upon.” A special “Thank You” goes out to team Carpe Diem sponsors Ridge Runner Restorations, R-Goods, Cycleworks, Taint-Paint, Blast-Tech Inc., Dons Body Shop and Gold Rush Signs and to the many old Brit bike enthusiasts and friends who provided their advice and knowledge to make this record possible. Editors Note: On August 20, 2008, Team “Carpe Diem” also set a new land speed record at Bonneville Speed Week on a vintage 1945 Triumph 3HW – a rigid tail and Springer front-end 350 cc overhead valve single. This bike was one of some 50,000 OHV and Side Valve machines produced by Triumph for World War II use by dispatch riders and truck convoy escorts in Europe as well as other theatres of operation. NEWS BYTES NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS HOPE TO HUSH LOUD PIPES California is home to the largest population of motorcyclists in the country, and if legislators have their way, it could also soon be home to one of the most onerous anti-motorcycle laws in America. By a bare majority vote of 21-16 on August 30 the state Senate approved SB435 which will make it a crime to operate a motorcycle manufactured after Jan. 1, 2013 that fails to meet federal noise-emission control standards and that all new motorcycles sold after that date must display and maintain compliance labels from the Environmental Protection Agency. A similar bill last session would have required biennial smog checks for emissions violations, but after meeting resistance from bikers’ rights groups it has since been amended to target illegally modified exhaust systems. Supporters of the bill say that many motorcycle owners modify their exhausts to make them louder, but swapping a compliant tailpipe equipped with a catalytic converter for one without emissions controls produces more smog-forming pollutants per mile. Opponents of the measure counter that many aftermarket exhausts meet federal EPA emissions standards but aren’t labeled, and labeling on stock systems is often difficult to locate, meaning that law-abiding riders could be unfairly ticketed. SB435 has already passed the Assembly and its fate now lies in the hands of the state’s most famous motorcycle rider, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose office has not yet taken a position on the proposed legislation. SOUND REASONING SILENCES N.H. NOISE ORDINANCE Although North Hampton, New Hampshire voters approved a noise ordinance in May that prohibits motorcycles without an EPA sticker from being operated or even parked in town, a lawyer for the federal agency has expressed that just because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires a label on all motorcycle mufflers indicating the noise the vehicle produces does not exceed 80 decibels doesn’t mean a municipality has the authority to enforce that noise level.

Even the town’s own legal counsel has indicated the ordinance is unenforceable, saying that the state has already determined the appropriate noise levels for motorcycles and that the town, therefore, does not have the option of creating its own more restrictive noise ordinance. That opinion was clearly reiterated in Williamson’s letter on behalf of the EPA. “Thus, neither the NCA nor the regulations in Part 205 (of the EPA code) grant municipalities the authority to enact or enforce ordinances that supersede any limitations on their authority under state law,” he wrote. Town officials decided not to fight the Harley dealer’s request for a preliminary injunction against the enforcement of the noise ordinance. “The ordinance will remain unenforced until we have a hearing,” Fournier said, indicating that the town’s new noise ordinance will not be enforced until after the judge issues a ruling on the matter. MASSACHUSETTS ENACTS RIDER TRAINING FOR JUNIOR MOTORCYCLISTS The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) announces that Senate Bill 2344, dubbed Ryan’s Bill, an “Act relative to assuring that motorcyclists between the ages of 16 and 18 are provided with adequate education relative to the proper safety and operation of a motorcycle.” has been signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick. Recognizing the additional burden formal training may require, MMA Legislative Director Rick Gleason states, “A weekend of formal training sets the stage for a lifetime of motorcycling enjoyment and the skills acquired through training can help a rider avoid a crash.” This new law does not make training mandatory, and only affects those under 18 who wish to earn their motorcycle license. MMA Chairman Dave Condon further clarifies that passage of Ryan’s Bill does not require a junior operator take a motorcycle training course. “A motorcycle permit in this state is good for two years. Therefore, a junior motorcycle operator can still ride on his\her permit beyond their 18th birthday, and take the road test offered by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.” Condon further stated, “The MMA was very careful in not taking anyone’s choice away or interfering with a parent’s right to decide what is best for their child.” Condon also pointed out that current state regulations require 40+ hours of formal training before a Junior Operator may obtain a license to operate an automobile.

“The Noise Control Act (NCA), which authorizes EPA to enact noise control regulations, states that ‘nothing in this section precludes or denies the right of any state or political subdivision thereof to establish and enforce controls on environmental noise,” wrote EPA Senior Assistant Regional Counsel Timothy Williamson in an Aug. 31 letter to North Hampton Town Administrator Steve Fournier. “However, neither does it grant localities any additional authority to control environmental noise beyond that available to them under state and local law.”

Motorcycle Rider Education Program (MREP) officials analyzed ten years of information from the Massachusetts RMV and found that just over 63% of those involved in fatal motorcycle accidents have never received any formal motorcycle rider training and 22.5% of motorcycle fatalities were from riders under the age of 21.

“The ordinance basically bans motorcycles from the town if they do not have an EPA label on their exhaust system even though the motorcycles comply with the state’s noise level limit of 106 decibels,” said Seacoast Harley-Davidson in court papers challenging the new law.

SAVING TIME CAN COST YOU MONEY In the current economic downturn, cash-strapped states across the U.S. are charging huge fines for speeding violations and other traffic infractions. All across America, legislators have one eye on road safety and the other on depleted coffers, and

around the world will be accelerated by rapid and effective transfer of knowledge, good practice and information from the best performing countries.”

Drivers caught speeding in the states of Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Nevada and New Hampshire all are liable to be fined up to $1000, at a judge’s discretion, for a first-time speeding offense, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The severity of the financial penalty also may depend upon the number of miles above the speed limit when clocked and the number of points on a driver’s license, or if the offense occurred near a school or road works. A driver’s license may also be suspended, their vehicle impounded, or they may face jail time.

Road deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2009: Malaysia 23.8; Argentina - 18.4; Greece - 13.8; Cambodia - 12.6; Korea - 12.0; Poland - 12.0; US - 11.1; Lithuania - 11.0; New Zealand - 8.9; Belgium - 8.9; Czech Rep - 8.6; Slovenia - 8.4; Hungary - 8.2; Portugal - 7.9; Italy - 7.9; Austria - 7.6; Luxembourg 7.2; Australia - 6.9; France - 6.9; Canada - 6.3; Spain - 5.9; Denmark - 5.5; Ireland - 5.4; Iceland - 5.3; Finland - 5.3; Germany - 5.1; Japan - 4.5; Switzerland - 4.5; Norway - 4.4; Israel - 4.2; Sweden - 3.9; Netherlands - 3.9; UK - 3.8

Some states including Michigan, Texas and New Jersey, operate under so-called “driver responsibility” laws, which, in some cases, can result in a further fine of up to $1000 leveled a year after the conviction. Virginia, which until 2008 had some of the strictest penalties for speeders, repealed its driver-responsibility laws last year after a public outcry. Georgia, meanwhile, has just voted to add $200 to the fine of what it terms “superspeeders,” who travel more than 10 mph over the speed limit. Other states with fines of up to $500 -- which in many cases is then compounded with additional court fees -- include Maryland, Missouri and Oregon. ROAD DEATHS DECLINE WORLDWIDE Data published by an international transportation group revealed Britain has the lowest road death tally of 33 countries surveyed, topping the charts with just 3.8 deaths per 100,000 population, and the declining global fatality rate has been heralded as “a record decade for road safety.” The United Kingdom joins the Netherlands and Sweden as the countries with the safest roads, according to the report published by the Paris-based International Transport Forum, while Malaysia, Argentina and Greece rated highest of the 33 countries detailed in the survey. The United States ranked 27th with a traffic fatality rate of 11.1, nearly three times higher than the UK. Further data from the survey revealed motorists are least likely to be killed on Swedish, UK and Swiss roads, while the chances of being involved in a fatal crash were highest in Korea, the Czech Republic and Malaysia. The report found motorcycle accidents in the UK were down 23%, despite a 45% increase in the number of motorcycles on the road. Figures for motorcycles figured badly in the worldwide survey, however, with huge rises in fatal crashes in Finland and Slovenia. On the flipside, bike-related deaths dropped significantly in Portugal and Korea. The report found motorcycle deaths were on the rise in many developing countries. “These increases are only partly explained by the rise in the number of motorcycles,” said Veronique Feypell-de La Beaumelle, ITF road safety expert.

INDONESIAN CAPITAL LIMITS MOTORCYCLE TRAFFIC City officials in Jakarta are mulling over schemes to limit the number of motorcycles allowed in certain areas during peak hours to help unsnarl the city’s acute traffic jams. The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association estimates there are about 35 million motorcycles in usable condition in the country, and in the capital city of 8.5 million people there are nearly one motorcycle for every person and growing by nearly a thousand new bikes every day. This extraordinarily high number of motorcycles has exacerbated the city’s already awful traffic, especially during rush hour, and plans are in place to begin banning bikes from a number of main thoroughfares in this mostly Muslim nation after the holy holiday of Ramadan, requiring riders to continue their journeys by public transportation. Motorcycle numbers have been increasing for six years throughout the country, driven by affluence and affordable credit schemes. Today, a new motorcycle can be purchased with an initial down payment of Rp 500,000 (US$50). WEIRD NUDES An 18-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran and his female passenger were thrown from a motorcycle when they veered off the road near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to newspaper reports, both sustained painful injuries due to total lack of safety gear; no helmet, no gloves, no boots…and no clothes! The naked riders landed in a ditch, and the Marine was knocked unconscious and awoke to charges of DUI, reckless driving, driving without a license, license revoked, expired inspection, no insurance and no helmet. His passenger walked nearly a mile for help despite a broken arm and leg, but was only ticketed for failure to wear a helmet. Apparently, riding in the buff is not a traffic offence in Onslow County as neither were charged with exhibitionism or failure to exhibit common sense. In August 2009, Dr Joe Boggess of Greenville, KY and his son Chris, of Louisville set out on their bikes for a trip to Colorado. Dr Joe's other son; Joe Jr was unable to go on short notice. The week before, they had just laid to rest Katie, their wife & mother, and decided they needed to get away. When Dr Joe and Chris returned, they decided to make this a yearly event, in memory of Miss Katie.

is 13,000 feet above sea level. On this day, they also went through Independence Pass and spent a few hours in Buena Vista waiting out a rain & hail storm. Day #5 took them to Steamboat Springs through Rabbit Ear's Pass. Each day was an adventure and each evening, the guys would watch the video from the day's ride, from the camera that had been mounted on Chris' bike. The total miles traveled by the Boggess men were around 3000 with 1200 of those miles being on the bikes.

On August 26 of this year, Joe joined his brother and dad and drove a truck with the bikes in a trailer, to Fort Collins, Colorado, where they picked up Dr Joe's cousin, Bob Karulf of Fort Collins, CO and Bob's in-law, Skip Cady of St Michael, MN.

Next year, there will be another ride in Miss Katie's memory. But the destination is undecided. They may just stay in the beautiful state of Kentucky, its home. One thing is for sure, next year's trip will include an extra rider, Joe's wife, Melanie. Melanie attended the "Rider's Edge" class at the Harley Davidson Store in Bowling Green, Ky. Rider's Edge is a five day course for new riders as well as experienced riders wanting a refresher course. Melanie enjoyed learning so much about riding, being taught from the very basic rules of riding to learning about riding in full gear. She was also voted "Most Likely To Accelerate" by her class.

After picking up the other two guys, they rode their bikes through the mountains around Fort Collins. On Day #2, the guys biked on to Breckenridge, going through the Colorado State Park. They stayed at Beaver Run in Breckenridge, making the ride out from this central location each day. Day #3 took them to the Royal Gorge where they walked across a suspension bridge and road an incline down into the Melanie, being a new rider, still goes down her gorge. Day #4 was a ride to Aspen, which mental check list each time she prepares for a ride, but with every ride, she is getting more comfortable with the bike and other vehicles on the road.

Melanie and Joe plan to make more bike rides in the future, but they will have to be planned around their busy schedules. Joe works as an industrial electrician and is the bassist in a local band, "Mudd River Union". Melanie owns her own dance studio and has been known to produce and/or star in theatrical productions at the Glema Mahr Center on the campus of Madisonville Community College. They are also the proud parents to Maria, who just started kindergarten. Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com Colorado Photos by The Boggess Family

It took 18 years for the Kentucky Headhunters to return to Muhlenberg County. And it was well worth the wait. As the finale for the Saturday night concert series “Saturday’s On The Square” sponsored by the Greenville Tourism Commission, the Kentucky Headhunters played to the largest concert crowd to ever attend the series, approximately 8000 people. Main Street was blocked off from Hopkinsville Street to East Main Cross, and the stage was set up on the south end. It was the last Saturday night in August and the music was hotter than the temperatures. The guys performed all the favorites, including “Dumas Walker”, “Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine”, “The Ballad Of Davy Crockett” and “Ol Lonesome Me”. They also sang “Big Boss Man”, whose music video was filmed at Ken America Mines in Midland earlier in the decade. The band that began as Itchy Brother, in Metcalfe County, Kentucky on Richard and Fred Young’s family farm, now is widely known as the Kentucky Headhunters. Current members include Richard Young, Fred Young, Greg Martin and Doug Phelps. The Headhunters dedicated the night to Shaun McElvain. The 21 yr old lost his arm in a farming accident near Dunmore, KY and had suffered physically and emotionally as a result. After the accident, Shaun’s dad, Bill McElvain, emailed the Headhunters telling about his son’s tragic accident. After reading the email, Richard Young called Bill McElvain and had the rest of the band on speakerphone with him. The band said that their hearts went out to Shaun, since they are all “country boys” too. The Headhunters made arrangements to meet and hang out with Shaun before the concert. Shaun and his family enjoyed spending time with the band before the concert & they were able to hang out on the tour bus before the show. The last time the Headhunters performed in Muhlenberg County was in 1992 when they were the headliners at The Everly Brothers Homecoming Concert, held in Central City. The Homecoming Concerts lasted for 14 years with the Headhunters performing in two of those years. Judy Staples of New Smyrna Beach, FL, formerly of Muhlenberg County attended the series finale and said the Headhunters were amazing back in the early 90’s, but they were “incredible” now. Staples was the concert director for the Everly Brother’s Foundation when the Homecoming Concerts hit their peak. Greenville Mayor Ed DeArmond said that the Headhunters expressed an interest in opening the Saturday’s On The Square next year and would also like to be the grand finale. It took 18 years to get two concerts. Next year, Muhlenberg may get two concerts in one summer! Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com
