Well we are another month into the New Year and the weather still isn’t cooperating. Been mostly snow this past month, I’m sure all of us are longing for the days of spring when we can get the dust off our bikes and ride in the sun. Cyclef Cyclefest USA
Owensboro Biker News was on the road in January and spent the weekend in Louisville KY at Cyclefest USA. The event was held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center on the 15th & 16th, 2011. Tradeshow Productions has held the Cyclefest named events in other cities over the past two years and in some of the larger venues they have done custom bike give-a-ways at the shows. Owensboro Biker News along with Cycleworks Choppers/Promotions was invited up to promote the Evansville Indiana Mid America Motorcycle Expo in the Louisville market. We spent the weekend with some long time friends in the industry, XXL Biker.com (Louisville Kentucky based), Custom Biker Wear (Sturgis, Kentucky based) and an entire host of vendors we see on the road during the summer months. Live music played during the show and was by none other than our good friend, national recording artist, R.B. Stone. Overall the show was testing the area for future growth, and after a late Saturday afternoon 4 Thunder Roads Kentucky
discussion, the fine directors of Trade Show Productions was excited enough to say that Louisville could be one of the major show stops in 2012. The crowd was good on Saturday, Sunday attendance seemed to be a little soft, and the biggest complaint that seemed to echo through the crowd was the $8 parking that the fairgrounds charged. It was a steep price for a one-day parking spot. I have included some pictures from the weekend for you to enjoy. And before I forget, Tim Banks of Cycleworks Choppers/Promotions left the show with the honor of “Best of Show” for one of his nationally known custom three wheel machines. There will be a complete follow-up in next month’s issue on the Evansville Indiana Mid America Motorcycle Expo. All I can say going into the show is that we have over 60 vendors and are expecting show bikes from 9 states. See you in March and ride safe. February 2011

Cyclemo’s Bonneville Trike Build By: Mike Silvio
To give you a “Brief tidbit” on the Bonneville trike..... We built a chopper lawn mower for our spring show....and it’s popularity kinda blew us away so we decided to create another project to unveil at our fall show. My desire was simply to ride a motor. I wanted a bare bones rocket ship with an old school flair. My buddy Red Dunn donated a 1970 Chevy Impala block that was freshly machined and ready to build. He also had a roll cage kit that was sitting in the back of his shop that he wasnt doing anything with so we decided that it would be a good start to our custom frame. we used a mock up block and literally chalked a line on the floor and started cutting, bending and fabricating our frame. The two really interesting points that come to mind about the frame are that I definitely did NOT want a backbone over the motor....so the motor is actually a stressed frame member...and I also wanted to use the frame as a means of transfering coolant to a rear mounted radiator. a bunch of the parts came from qualls auto salvage in lafayette...including the s-10 rear end and offset wheels. The front end is 1946 Harley big twin vintage. we lengthened the stock bars and mounted a panhead era seat right on top of the turbo 350 trans with a shif kit. If it is not needed....it is not on the trike! We were VERY worried about wether or not it would get too hot to ride......and wether or not it would track worth a shit...... Needless to say...it DOES NOT get hot.....dont ask me how or why!!!! (Radiator in the rear helps a TON!!!!) ..... and it tracks straight as an arrow!!! (I guess the chalk line on the floor was straight!!!!)

Tech Tips Harley Hop-Up by Kirby Apathy
The Thunder Jet, a lot of people want one or have one in their carb, but don’t really know what it dose or how to tune it. We will start with the basic principle of how its supposed to work. On a lot off big inch or high RPM motors, you have to have such a large main jet for the higher RPM`s, that your midrange is too rich. The Thunder Jet is a 3rd tuning circuit that will take over on the big end thus letting you lower the main jet to allow for a more responsive mid RPM range. The S&S carbs will also allow you to install a adjustable air bleed (using a S&S or Mikuni jet),the stock air bleed is .042,raising or opening up the air bleed will allow the main jet to come on later. This becomes very important as we’ve found that with S&S carbs, the intermediate jet is usually raised 1 or 2 sizes bigger than normal, this will create a stumble or flat spot where the intermediate jet crosses over to the main jet, thus raising where the transition is will eliminate the stumble. Also like I said before, the main jet can be lowered, to give the whole tune on the carb better throttle response, this is where the Thunder Jet comes in. Within the T-Jet,theres a replaceable jet that can be changed to richen up the top end that would normally be to lean from the lowering of the main jet. When its all said & done, your intermediate jet will be a size or two bigger than normal, while your main jet will be a size or two smaller, jetting the thunder jet will be a trail & error type of thing, the T-jet starts coming on at about 4500 rpm`s, dynoing the bike makes it a lot easier. The T-Jet for the CV Harley carbs works on the same principle as the S&S carbs, just installed a little differently. You can run 1,2,3 or we’ve installed 4 in a pro stock Harley S&S D carb. Engine displacement, cams, compression & RPM ranges will effect the tuning of the T-jets. We always turn the accelerator pumps down when tuning them as they can give false covers of a lean condition. The installation isn’t a real complicated operation but should be preformed by a competent machinist with the proper equipment, a milling machine is a must, we’ve had riders bring in their carbs, after try to install them with drill presses or one guy that put his carb in a vise and used a cordless drill(??).If you have one or want one, but have some more questions, feel free to contact us and we will try to help you out, their not rocket science, but can be a little on the confusing side. Reading is always good for you, if you are well read you will bike drag racing stories, her moment of not be easily misled. I have a good book to recommend to you to pass fame as a Loretta Swit look a like, getting the time while snow & ice cover the roads. It’s a bio of a Tennessee into a fight with the Sheriff of Custer, resident biker gal named Katy Ishee. SD, she portrayed a bartender in Old West shows in Tombstone, AZ where I met Miss Katy at the Spring Thaw Bike Show last year & she gave me she nearly shot her butt off with a copy of her book to review for TRM. To be honest I procrastinated on a blank firing pistol. During her reading the book because the title implies that it is a chick’s book but its travels on her mostly trustworthy not! Sure the 1969 BMW she crossed path with ladies will love the the roller coaster ride of drama that unfolds during egomaniac bikers, liars, bad asses, Katy’s colorful, adventurous, & emotion filled life. But the men will enjoy patch holders, truckers, and a seeing life through the eyes of a biker woman who was ahead of her time variety of assholes in her journey. She also in a man’s world over 30 years ago. Katy has been riding solo since 1974 came across numerous good people & fun filled honest and she has traveled her often difficult path of life resembling a famous biker brothers & sisters who are true to the lifestyle. icon, Maj. All the while carrying a torch in her heart seeking the son that biker wedding in 1994!!!!! :) You must read this her cold hearted & difficult mother demanded she put up for adoption book! It’s sorta like a chick version of Easyrider when she was 17 years old while growing up in rural Florida. except it covers a variety of adventures & has a happy ending. Katy does eventually find happiness with her I very seldom read novels. I prefer history or bios about real people. This last husband, Virgil, in the hills of East Tenn. More 370 page volume is written by a biker woman who still rides & is exciting importantly she finds her only child, Steve, after 27 to talk to. You’ll read her detailed stories of the horror of being committed years who is also a biker and who had been searching to an insane asylum by her parents. You’ll get a glimpse of the painful for her too.(If you don’t get emotional reading & ludicrous shock about their long anticipated reunion there must be therapy treatment she something wrong with ya.) suffered with because her Rebel spirit did Her long time pal, blues guitar legend Lonnie Mack, not conform to the mold sums up Katy’s bio very well with one sentence. It is no romance novel or boring biography this is how a scary, sad, & shocking. girl who likes her knees in the breeze has survived life (Pun intended.) during many difficult trials with a lot of humor, You’ll read about the tenacity, & courage with her head held high. by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Is the office of DPMO (Defense Prisoner of War– Missing Personnel Office) accepting remains of service members held in Vietnam and Laos after Operation Homecoming in 1973? Are those remains being identified and repatriated to the families now as a means to conceal they were held long after 1973 and died in captivity? Was the normalization of relations with Vietnam really about putting the war in the past and singing “Kum bay ya” with communists or was it the key to CYA by those who left our POWs behind? How can you make 700 prisoners left behind disappear? Wouldn’t you let them die or kill them and mix their bones in with remains being recovered from the battlefield? In the Fall of 2008 I asked RADM Donna Crisp, head of DPMO laboratories in Hawaii, if remains returned from Southeast Asia were examined for age at death. She said she didn’t know and to give my question to her aide who would research the answer and get back to me. No answer or contact has happened and my attempts to get an answer have been ignored. Is it possible the head of the laboratories wouldn’t know if this important test is conducted? Age at death would prove Americans have been held after 1973 in Southeast Asia. Amazing this is not a priority! What do you think about the following excerpts from the following article? “KNOX (IN) -- For more than 40 years, Chief Warrant Officer George Andres “Andy” Howes and Staff Sgt. Sam Hewitt were missing in Vietnam. Now, in an amazing coincidence, the remains of last two Vietnam POW-MIAs from Starke County have been identified just three months apart. Hewitt’s remains were identified last fall and were buried in a ceremony attended by about 500 in October in Medina, Ohio, where his mother and sister now live. Six decomposed bones belonging www.thunderroadskentucky.com
to Howes have recently been confirmed, thanks to DNA samples taken from his brother Rob Howes, according to POW-MIA activist and former sisterin-law Ann Howes. The remains have been in U.S. possession since 1998, but their condition didn’t allow for DNA sequencing until recent technological advances. Howes was the co-pilot, with Capt. Herbert Crosby, on Rattler 91, a Huey helicopter from the 71st Assault Helicopter Co., which was stationed at Chu Lai, South Vietnam. While on a mission with two other helicopters in November 1970, Rattler 91 took off from Tien Phuoc in a rainstorm. The helicopters had to stay close to the tree tops in the dense, dark, rainy conditions, just above mountainous terrain covered by dense jungle. But soon after taking to air, the other helicopters lost radio contact with Rattler 91 and it failed to return to Chu Lai. An extensive search didn’t locate the helicopter, the two pilots and two crewmen. Information on several websites, including the Virtual Vietnam Wall, indicates some Vietnamese say they saw Howes as a captive of North Vietnamese soldiers. Over the years, the remains of Crosby and the two crewmen were found, but not those of Howes.” Many reports of service members surviving a battle or crash related incident and being taken into captivity are chronicled in the book, “An Enormous Crime” by former US Congressman Bill Hendon. No prisoners of war from Laos were ever repatriated at the end of the war. When will we go back and get them. Some are surely still alive today. If Korean POW’s from the early 1950’s survived and came home last year then some of our POW’s in Vietnam and Laos have certainly survived and can be brought home. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog Thunder Roads Kentucky 9
LOCAL ARTIST GOING GLOBAL This whole thing started back when Sabastian was about 15 years old and he stepped on to a stage and thought he was Led Zeppelin, so he quit school because he thought he was going to be a big rock star. That went on until he was about 22 or 23 years old. At that time he went back to his education and joined the Army and was in the military police. When he was done with the service, he went into construction as a crane operator, only after working in the private security industry/liquor license industry. During this whole time Sabastian kept music as a hobby and put a band together that played heavy metal on Friday nights.
He and Tommy Tutone started talking about doing a record, and the next thing he knew he was in the truck heading for Nashville. He recorded a record with Tommy which is the “IT IS WHAT IT IS” record. His thought behind that was to have a 5 song demo, shop it out there, and not really know where the ball would land. He sent it to enough people that he knew in the industry to say hey, here’s what Sabastian is up to, it’s not heavy metal, it’s still that southern rock, rock a billy kind of music. “I’m a biker, first and foremost, and that’s the kind of music I want to do,” says Sabastian.
In an accident while being a crane operator, Sabastian lost his arm which made him decide to take his music a step further. He dropped the heavy metal thing, cleaned up his act, which wasn’t clean at the time, he went through the whole drug and alcohol gamut, playing with all that crap. When he thought it out, he realized the game just wasn’t fun anymore. Sabastian explains, “It just became Friday nights were all party nights. I wanted to go farther… I wanted to take it as far as he could in music.” That was when Sabastian, while in flight school taking lessons to become a helicopter pilot, met Tommy Tutone.
He found an investor and was originally going to add more songs to the “IT IS WHAT IT IS” record, but the investor said no, he wanted him to cut an entirely new record. And Sabastian said, “ABSOLUTELY!” Through all of that he met Mark Oliverius, who was Lorrie Morgan’s music director and producer. So several trips to Nashville, and knowing that you have to be in it to win it, you have to sell yourself, pound the pavement, knock on doors, and show you’re serious Sabastian now has his own record label and publishing company, Homage Records and Daydream Publishing Company.

Sabastian writes a lot of his own music, though on his “UNWANTED MAN” record he has a lot of co-writers. He has a lot of big names helping him out, and I asked how he hooked up with all of these people. Well on his many trips to Nashville, he came to know a lot of big names. He explains, one night at a bar called Tootsies, on Lower Broadway, he was sitting in his usual VIP section and these big names just flow in and they get to talking and the next thing he knew he was on stage with these guys. Country music is a family and a tight circle. And each circle has a little camp. Well Sabastian, being the social butterfly that he is, has met with people from inside each of these circles and each of these camps. He has really put himself out there in Nashville and is very popular and well liked. Just to name a few of the folks he has had the opportunity to hook up with there is: Ronnie Stoneman and Roy Clark from Hee Haw, Melton McDaniel, George Strait, Tanya Tucker, Reba McEntire, the Mandrels, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. When they decide to put their arms around you and make you family you’re in. Sabastian knew he had a good record but feels very fortunate to be where he’s at with the people he’s with. www.thunderroadskentucky.com
Another reason for having his own record label and publishing company, is to consult for those who want to get into the business. Sabastian and his wife Cori have come across a lot of snakes in the business that have ripped them off and taken advantage of them. They are all about helping people not to go through what they have gone through. Sabastian has such a big heart that when the right individual comes along he would take them under his wing and teach them what he has learned along the way and save them from making the same mistakes that he has encountered in his journey. Sabastian wasn’t always where he is today. He has lived in his car, in mobile homes, and has been without food and shelter, and still being where he is now, he has never forgotten what hunger feels like. In fact he does a lot of work for the Anoka County Food Shelf which includes a show every year where all the money taken in goes to the food shelf. And talk about the most down to earth, good hearted people. Sabastian and Cori are it. And the history they have together is such an amazing story. They have been Thunder Roads Kentucky 11

Dave Barr Raises the Bar By Lisa Price Waltman 83,000 miles ridden encircling the world on a Harley Davidson is probably impressive enough. 13,000 miles across Europe, Russia, and Siberia (in the dead of winter) and traversing the four extreme geographical points of the Australian mainland is nothing to scoff at and certainly warrants the two Guinness World record titles he holds. But watching Dave Barr in action, on or off of his Harley, is nothing short of amazing. A former Marine, a member of three additional global military forces and a double leg amputee, Barr walks the walk of his motto: “There is no great accomplishment without great risk.” Leading a nationwide group of riders recently in the first annual Honor Run, sponsored by the 1st Marine Division Association, Barr took time to speak to a group in Golden, Colorado, and others across the country about courage, integrity, and false heroes. “A professional athlete who knowingly breaks the law is “punished” with a small monetary fine, a two game suspension and we reward him by buying more of his jerseys.” Barr said. “A recording artist brags in his lyrics about hurting others, especially women, and what do we do? …we buy more of their CD’s. These are NOT our heroes and shame on us for treating them as such!” Barr said. In front of a packed auditorium in Beaver, Utah, Barr spoke to high school students and staff about personal choices, actions and consequences. Never boasting on himself as if to say: “Look what I’ve done and I’m supposedly ‘disabled’.” Barr carried his message of courage and leadership to hundreds of captivated listeners who just minutes before believed that forty-five minutes of time out of class and extra text messaging opportunities were to be the highlight of their day. Their facial expressions, the closed books and deactivated phones illustrated their immediate attitude adjustment. “If you get up in the morning and you look in the mirror and see your best friend, you will be able to say to yourself: “I CAN!” to anything that challenges you.” Barr said. “But if in that mirror you see an enemy, your thoughts and actions will be “I can’t.” he said. “But YOU can change that…you can be that difference in your own life…don’t make it someone else’s responsibility… it is entirely yours!” Barr said with exuding passion and determination. Barr, an advocate for the true heroes; the military and disabled, led The Honor Run, an 8,000 mile motorcycle ride from Washington, D.C., to Foothill Ranch, CA, during August and September of 2009, raising awareness and funds to help build a Fisher House, a “home-awayfrom-home” for injured and recovering military and veterans. With nearly 2,000 total riders registered, Barr was unshakable in leading the way and keeping the purpose of the ride on the hearts and minds of everyone encountered. “Our military deserve so much more than any one of us can individually give. But collectively we can make a huge difference.” Barr said as he straps on his helmet (and his legs) and takes on the next 400 miles of the day. Truly amazing. www.thunderroadskentucky.com

Place sliced mushrooms in a 1/4 inch of olive oil, with a pat of real butter for total browning over mediumlow heat. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl, stirring until smooth. Add next 5 ingredients, pour over chicken. slow roast on top of stove for 1 hour or until chicken is done. Serve with buttered noodles generously topped w/ either dried or fresh parsley. If dried, rub in your hands to awaken the flavor. * My mom used to make this same recipe in a cast iron skillet, but she’d jazz it up by adding strips of green, red and yellow peppers and letting it all cook down on top of stove with a cover over 3/4 of the skillet to allow air to flow. Mild green chilies is a nice addition also. Any way you do it, this dish is fabulous and the key to it is slow and steady. Don’t rush the good stuff and like Julie Child said...”don’t crowd the mushrooms when browning!”. In a blender or food processor, combine yogurt and cranberry juice. Add strawberries, raspberries and sugar; cover adn process until blended. Pour into chilled, fancy dessert glasses. Serve immediately. These are so rich, you can serve as dessert. Beat whipping cream at medium speed with an electric mixer until foamy; gradually add powdered sugar; beating at high speed until soft peaks form. Gently stir in liqueur’ and tangerine rind. Serve with chilled, fresh strawberries and dip away, baby, dip away!! Prepare and bake cake according to package directions, using two greased and floured 9-inch round baking pans. Cool for 10 minutes, remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt; gradually stir in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutets or until thickened. Remove from the heat. Stir a small amount of hot filling into egg yolks; return all to pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Place half of the whipped topping in a bowl; add strawberries. Split each cake into two horizontal layers; plce one layer on a serving plate. Spread with half of the strawberry mixture. Top with a second cake layer; spread with custard. Add third layer; spread with remaining strawberry mixture. Top with remaining cake and whipped topping. Refrigerate overnight.

Australian Medical Association researchers have found that patients needing blood transfusions may benefit from receiving chicken blood rather than human blood. It tends to make the men cocky and the women lay better. The boss of a Madison Avenue advertising agency called a spontaneous staff meeting in the middle of a particularly stressful week. (This is one pretty sharp boss!) When everyone gathered, the boss, who understood the benefits of having fun, told the burnt out staff the purpose of the meeting was to have a quick contest. The theme: Viagra advertising slogans. The only rule was they had to use past ad slogans, originally written for other products that captured the essence of Viagra. Slight variations were acceptable. About 7 minutes later, they turned in their suggestions and created a Top 10 List.. With all the laughter and camaraderie, the rest of the week went very well for everyone! The top 10 were: 10. Viagra, Whaazzzz up! 9. Viagra, The quicker pecker picker upper. 8. Viagra, like a rock ! 7. Viagra, When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight. 6. Viagra , Be all that you can be. 5. Viagra, Reach out and touch someone. 4. Viagra, Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman. 3. Viagra, Home of the whopper! 2. Viagra, We bring good things to Life! And the unanimous #1 slogan: 1. This is your peepee... This is your peepee on drugs. I like my friend at work’s suggestion: The Hoover Vacuum slogan: “Put the power of an upright in your hand”! Little Johnny was sitting in class one day. All of the sudden, he needed to go to the bathroom. He yelled out,”Miss Jones, I need to take a piss!!” The teacher replied, “Now, Johnny, that is NOT the proper word to use in this situation. The correct word you want to use is ‘urinate.’ Please use the word ‘urinate’ in a sentence correctly, and I will allow you to go.” Little Johnny thinks for a bit, then says, “You’re an eight, but if you had bigger “jugs”, you’d be a ten!!!” Two little boys are fighting in the school yard. One yells out; “Yo mama’s so stupid she sits on the TV and watches the couch! To which the other little boy calmly replies: Yo mama’s so stupid that she thought Boyz II Men was a day care center. 22 Thunder Roads Kentucky
There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms. Well, Lena, an adorable but scatter-brain, is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 8:00 am. The next day at 8:45 am there is a knock at the Personnel Manager’s door.. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new Employee.. He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule. The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2 men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo’s all over the factory floor and they’re really beginning to pile up. At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me Elmo’s. She has a roll of plush Red fabric and a huge bag of small marbles. The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package between Elmo’s legs. The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena . ‘I’m sorry,’ he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, ‘but I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you yesterday....’ ‘Your job is to give Elmo two TEST tickles. A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: ‘I have circled the block 10 times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.’ When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note ‘I’ve circled this block for 10 years. If I don’t give you a ticket I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.’ Well, I lost the Trivia Contest at our Christian Game Night Party last night by 1 point. Not only got the last question wrong, but was immediately asked to leave. The question was: “Where do women have the curliest hair?” Apparently the correct answer is Fiji. Happy Valentine’s Day to all you sexy gals and guys in leather. Remember fellas.....if you want to get a little”, you dang sure gotta’ give a little. Tit for Tat......and dat’s that. February 2011

This month’s Flashback subject has not only spent most of his life riding two wheelers but repairing them too. Meet Donnie “Duck” Malone who is a native of Pulaski, Tenn. ( I suspect his real name is Donald & that would explain the Duck nick name.) :) Duck began riding in 1968 on a Rupp mini bike & soon moved up to various Honda bikes as many future Harley riders did in their formative years. In 1976 while in the 12th grade he bought a brand new 1975 Harley Davidson Sportster for $3,100. In 1978 he moved on up to a big twin. A 1957 Panhead that he rode for several years & he still has not been cured of Panhead fever. Donnie met one of his big brother’s buddies in Columbia in 1978 who had opened a bike shop in 1973 that specialized in Panhead work. That would be his future employer Sam Goodman of S & G Custom Cycles. (You can see Duck in front of S & G’s old building on his recently purchased Athens Police bagger.) Later in 1978 Donnie joined the Army as a mechanic in the transportation department and served for 4 years. After his discharge in 1981 he moved to Texas to work with Mancusso Competition to do bike restoration & racing. Next he went to Republic Harley Davidson in Houston as a service manager & eventually advanced to General Manager of the huge dealership. This job allowed him to travel all over meeting all sorts of people, build a few show winning bikes, along with doing a little bit of drag racing too. In 2007 he was asked to join the advisory board of the popular MMI Harley mechanic school in Phoenix, AZ.
Manager at Cool Springs HD in Franklin & soon wound up in that job at the new Columbia HD in Mule Town. In the summer of 2009 Donnie came full circle in his two wheel career when he took a job building motors, doing repairs, and restoring old Harleys at S & G Custom Cycles. Donnie has several Harley to cruise the beautiful Tenn back roads on. He has a 2006 Roadglide, the 2000 Dyna Superglide race bike & he also has a cool 1949 Panhead bobber that he built in 2010. It’s been great getting to know you Donnie & Melinda and I hope y’all’s two wheel loving lives continue on down the road. Now, can I have some more of that killer hot & spicy deer jerky you make? If you know someone who’d like to be featured in this article or if you would like to grab your 15 minutes of fame, please contact Rebel Ron at 931-374-8368, celticgranda2@yahoo.com or stop by S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia.
A side bar of his career at Republic HD was meeting a lovely looking receptionist named Melinda in 2006 who was the third generation of a Harley riding family. She also had a life long love affair with two wheelers since her dad bought her a dirt bike at a young age. Donnie made the mistake of letting her make a pass on his NOS powered 2000 Dyna Superglide. The thrill was overwhelming for her and she took over as pilot of Duck’s bike. She still holds a record in the Super Street FL class along with numerous wins. They married in 2007. In 2008 the Malones moved to Tenn. to help care for Donnie’s elderly mother. After the move he was hired as Parts

NEWS BYTES THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-ABIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) MOTORCYCLE-RIDING CONGRESSWOMAN SHOT In what has been described as a national tragedy, a deranged gunman opened fire during a public meeting with constituents by Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords outside a Tucson supermarket on January 8 that left six dead and more than a dozen injured including the state rep who was critically injured with a bullet wound to the head. Giffords, 40, rides motorcycles and married an astronaut at a wedding where everything had to be biodegradable. She is a centrist threeterm Democrat who champions gun rights, lists fiscal discipline as one of her top issues and was re-elected in a conservative district when Republicans took control of the House. Before entering politics she ran the family tire business, which was founded by her grandfather in 1949. Perhaps growing up in an autofocused family led to her love of motorcycles. She is a co-chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus with Republican Walt Jones of North Carolina. In 2009 Rep. Giffords taped a video message encouraging people to ride their motorcycles to work, saying that she likes to ride motorcycles, but also likes that they leave a smaller carbon footprint than cars. She also sided with motorcycle riders who favor state legislation to ride helmet-free, as she does. Though early reports suggested Giffords was fatally shot, she miraculously survived being shot point-blank through the brain and her doctors are optimistic about her chances of recovery. The thoughts and prayers of America’s motorcycling community are with her and the other victims of this tragic assault. NEW YEAR, NEW LAWS The New Year rang in several new laws across the country affecting the motorcycle riding community, including the onerous new California anti-noise law that requires EPA-labeling for motorcycle exhausts on bikes built after 2012.
Already in the works for 2011, state legislatures are considering new laws to ban passengers under 8 years old in Virginia (House Bill 1850), allow Sunday motorcycle sales in Indiana (Senate Bill 108), and calls for a helmet law in Kentucky (House Bill 163). In Nebraska, Legislative Bill 62 has been filed to allow adult riders to opt out of the state’s mandatory helmet law with the completion of an approved motorcycle safety course. EUROPEAN COMMISSION ADVOCATES MANDATORY ABS FOR MOTORCYCLES A European Union Commission has presented its proposal for new framework regulation for motorcycles. It plans to mandate antilock braking systems (ABS) for motorcycles with more than 125cc displacement from 2017 onwards. Although the first anti-lock braking system was installed on a motorcycle in 1988, only 16% of all newly manufactured motorcycles in Europe were equipped with ABS, and by comparison car manufacturers have made ABS standard equipment since 2004 which has contributed to a 49% overall decline in fatal car accidents in the EU. Experts regard anti-lock braking as a huge boost to safety. For example, a benefit analysis conducted for the European Commission calculates that the proposed regulation would reduce the number of fatal motorcycle accidents by more than 5,000 over a 10-year period. A study presented by Vagverket, the Swedish highways authority, in October 2009 showed that 38% of all motorcycle accidents involving personal injury and 48% of all serious and fatal accidents, could have been prevented with ABS. This active safety system allows motorcyclists to brake safely in critical situations without locking the wheels, and thus without having to fear an inevitable fall. Braking distance is also significantly reduced. The proposal is currently passing through the EU legislative procedure but will likely be adopted next year. The regulation will come into effect from 2017. In the U.S., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has considered requiring ABS on new motorcycles sold in America, and will likely take up the issue in the near future. ECONOMIC UPTICK HAS AMERICANS BUYING LEISURE PRODUCTS AGAIN People are buying expensive leisure products again, after they held back during the recession. A new report from Milwaukee’s Robert W. Baird and Company said motorcycle sales fell by half during the downturn, and ATV sales were just 30% of what they used to be.
Other less volatile laws also took effect on January 1st, including another California law that requires would-be motorcyclists under 21 to complete an approved safety course before an applicant can receive an instruction permit to learn to ride. California lawmakers also passed a law to curb motorcycle thefts by outlawing possession of so-called “pigtails” which are homemade ignitions that allow a crook to start a motorcycle in as little as 20 seconds. Previously, burglary tools for the purpose of breaking into or stealing a vehicle other than a motorcycle were prohibited.
But Baird analyst Craig Kennison says many consumers now have a brighter outlook, in spite of high unemployment and a housing market that continues to be depressed. He said inventories for new leisure items are low, and there’s a strong demand for used goods.
Several states have recently enacted legislation requiring the completion of a motorcycle training course before being issued a motorcycle license endorsement, and this year Connecticut and North Carolina join the growing list of states tightening restrictions on motorcycle licensure for newbie riders. In Oregon, a new training requirement went into effect to mandate safety classes for new motorcyclists under the age of 30, and the law will expand over the next few years to include all new riders regardless of age.
And while it’s hard to prove, Kennison expects the same trend for cars, RV’s, and other big ticket items. He also said consumers are more confident about their personal wealth, especially after the Bush tax cuts were extended. Had Congress not acted this month, Kennison said it might have been a disaster for discretionary spending.
26 Thunder Roads Kentucky
Kennison said Milwaukee’s Harley-Davidson Motor Co. slashed its production during the recession - and that drove up the prices for used bikes. But now, he says more folks are buying new Harleys with the help of trade-ins.

NEWS BYTES SURVEY SAYS; AGE UP, QUALITY DOWN Bikers are getting older and they spend more at a motorcycle dealership they are happy with, according to a new ownership survey recently released by J.D. Power and Associates. J.D. Power’s 13th annual U.S. Motorcycle Competitive Information Study also reveals that motorcycle quality has dipped to 2008 levels, with 152 problems reported per 100 motorcycles (PPM) -- an increase of 29 PPM. One half of owners surveyed reported that most of those problems (44%) are engine related, and the study suggests that gearshift problems, clutch chatter, and insufficient engine power have the greatest impact on overall satisfaction. The study cites a few no-brainers, like the fact that “Sales volumes and revenue of ancillary goods and services tend to be considerably higher -- by an average of $957 -- at motorcycle dealerships that provide a highly satisfying experience vs. dealerships that do not.” But the causal relationship between customer satisfaction and dollars spent is less ominous than their findings that the average rider age has risen from 40 to 49 since 2001, “an indication that many owners may soon exit the market”... combined with the study’s findings that first-time motorcycle buyers are on the decline, makes it all the more imperative that the motorcycle industry seeks to capture the interest of younger riders who might consider buying their first bike. FEWER BUSINESSES SELLING MOTORCYCLES, PARTS & ACCESSORIES There are 10,428 retail outlets in the United States that conduct business related to motorcycles, scooters or ATVs, down by more than 25% from 13,973 such businesses in 2009, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. These were the principle findings of the MIC 2010 Retail Outlet Audit, a summary of which the council sent to its members this week. The audit was completed in December 2010. The report broke down the total by the number of retailers that sell new major-brand vehicles -- 5,134, or 49.2% -- and the number of retailers not selling new vehicles, but specializing in parts, accessories, apparel, used vehicles or service: 5,294, or 50.8%.
The extrapolation isn’t entirely far-fetched, and may lead to a healthy new excuse to ride; “Honey, I’m taking my exer-cycle for a workout.” WEIRD NEWS: CANADIAN BIKERS OUTRAGED OVER GOVERNMENT SPYING Motorcycle operators in Quebec are outraged that the province’s automobile insurance board hired a private PR firm “to spy on us” and gather information about the group. The insurance board decided to monitor the group of motorcyclists earlier this year after learning that a coalition of angry owners had been formed to fight huge insurance rate hikes. The public relations firm National was granted a contract to investigate the activities of the Front Commun Motocycliste, which had set up kiosks at a Quebec City motorcycle show. “They give the impression of being organized, documented and especially very motivated,” the firm stated in its two-page report after observing the group at the bike show. The report stated that the motorcycle owners were “dynamic and aggressive in their approach” with visitors. Members of the group were appalled to learn that the government would pay a private firm to monitor their activities. “We are outraged, flabbergasted and scandalized to learn that taxpayers’ money was used to spy on us. We are average taxpayers. We aren’t al-Qaeda,” said Éric Lessard, spokesman for the group. “The government is showing complete contempt for motorcycle owners.” The board denied spying on the group, telling the Globe and Mail newspaper that “There was a lot of anger and we knew protest groups were being formed,” according to a spokeswoman for the automobile insurance board, Audrey Chaput. “We granted a contract to the firm National to go out and listen to what the groups were saying and to feel the pulse of the movement.” Motorcycle owners have protested vigorously against insurance rate increases that have doubled since 2007 for owners of average-size motorcycles and more than quadrupled for owners of high-powered motorcycles considered more hazardous by the insurance board.
The MIC conducted its research by collecting information from all the manufacturers above, as well as from the trade magazines Dealernews and Motorcycle Product News. Because the study’s sources vary from year to year, the MIC warns that comparisons with previous years are subject to “considerable error.”
2011 NCOM CONVENTION IN ALBUQURQUE Mark your calendar now for the 26th annual NCOM Convention, to be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 5-8, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque located at 330 Tijeras Ave NW in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The report further indicates that 58.8% of the new vehicle retail outlets carry only one of the 13 major brands. Slightly less than one-fifth are dual-line outlets, and 21.9% carry three or more of the major brands. The total number of franchises distributed among the 5,134 new vehicle outlets declined 5.6% to 9,182 from 9,731 in 2009.
This annual gathering will draw bikers’ rights activists from across the country to discuss topics of concern to all riders, so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $80.00 by calling (800) 2331234. Airport/Hotel transportation is available.
NO BONES ABOUT IT Most “experts” agree that riding motorcycles helps you to FEEL younger, but can riding actually make your body healthier and more youthful? A recent Medical College of Georgia study found that; “A daily dose of whole body vibration may help reduce the usual bone density loss that occurs with age,” on top of improving muscle strength and promoting weight loss... so it would appear that pulsating power from a motorcycle engine and the rumble of the open road will help aging bones get stronger.
www.thunderroadskentucky.com
Registration fees for the NCOM Convention are $75 including the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday night, or $40 for the Convention only. All motorcyclists are welcome and encouraged to attend. Meetings, seminars and group discussions will focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride and Freedom of the Road. Matt. 14 and Mark 4 we read that Jesus “sent His disciples to the other side,” both events occur on the water in the middle of the sea “and a great storm arose.” And at both events the disciples were in great fear for their lives, in Mark 4 Jesus was asleep in the bottom of the boat and in Matt.14, Jesus came walking on the water! Don’t Do Laundry.....Just Ride!
When I was growing up, my family always made New Year’s Resolutions. Most of the time, they included things like losing weight, eating healthier or becoming more organized. We also ate black eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Mom said that the first guest in your home in the New Year must be a man and she would never do laundry on that day because “Whatever you do on New Year’s Day, you’ll be doing for the rest of the year.” This old superstition is what prompted the New Year’s Day Polar Ride. This year was the 2nd Annual Polar Ride, sponsored by KMA/KBA Paradise District 13. The temperatures hovered right around freezing, but the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day for a ride. The first ride in 2010 was a much different story. The temperature struggled to hit 20 degrees, which wreaked havoc on the bikes, causing problems with the gas lines freezing, right along with this photographer, who had yet to learn how to dress for these events. But this year, the skies were blue, the sun was out, a brisk breeze was blowing and I was dressed warmly from head to toe just to make sure I didn’t freeze like last year. The biker’s met at the Muhlenberg County Courthouse, located in Greenville, Kentucky at 11:00am. At noon, the group headed to Madisonville for lunch at The Southwest Oasis Grill and then the trip back home. Many bikers may not brave the cold for a quick ride on any other day, but just to be able to say you rode on the first day of the year would lead you to believe that you would have a good year of riding. In recent years, my New Year’s Resolution has been to not make a resolution. I don’t eat the black eyed peas anymore and it doesn’t matter if I do laundry on that day or not. I still have to do laundry the rest of the year! Come to think of it......Mom did too! Happy New Year!

Painting 101 with Jason Sprengel What’s up! Here we are again for part two of our Painting 101. Hopefully you enjoyed the first part and learned a couple things in the process. Now that we have covered what it takes to get the colors laid down, we are ready for the fun stuff! We will be covering the graphics in this issue and finishing the job. This is where all the creativity and personalization comes into play. The possibilities for a custom job are endless, it is only limited to your imagination. I realize that not everyone is going to have the ability to do the complete paintjob, but you will be able to lay down the base colors and have someone else do the artwork for you if you choose. This is where you are going to be able to get a very nice custom job for not a whole lot of money. By having the colors down and prep work done, you should be able to come to myself or any custom shop and have some nice artwork done for a few hundred bucks and be ready to roll! This will give you the freedom to have a base color down and do any graphics you may want and still have a professional stripe job or a bit of airbrushing into it and not have a small fortune in the bike! Feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas you may have with your project. Check out the site at www.sikpaint.com or call (618)559-7800. Step #7: Scuff and Clean - We left off last month with all the base color, candy color, and clear already sprayed. As mentioned before, the job can be left a solid color or add more layers of graphics or any other ideas you may desire. Here we are scuffing the clear so we can add scallops and pinstriping over our candy gold. Once the clear is plenty dry we are going to wet sand the job with 1000 grit paper and scuff the edges with a Scotch-Brite pad. Make sure again that the surface is dry and clean. After it is sanded and scuffed, wipe the area down with a damp paper towel and clean water. Step #8: Layout Design - This is where the job really gets fun! I’m sure by now you are tired of sanding and scuffing and all the boring stuff. We are going to be putting a simple scallop design on the tank and a stripe on the rear fender. I am laying out the design with fine line 3M tape. Using the fine line will allow you to bend tight curves and get an idea of where you want the graphics. Any design or style can be used here whether its flames, scallops, stripes, or two-tones. Personalization is the key here because everyone is going to have a different idea in mind for their bike. Once you have the design you want, start covering the area you do NOT want painted with masking tape. Simply cover the areas that you want to stay the same color because spraying the graphics will completely cover up the base color. 32 Thunder Roads Kentucky
Step #9: Spraying Graphics - Make sure all areas are covered where you do not want graphics. Any color can be used for graphics. You can use any color for the graphics that you may desire, here we are using black. You will want to use a basecoat because the whole project is going to be re-cleared eventually. Spray the graphic color light and easy to make for a little less of a paint line in the end. Keep nice even coats until the base color is completely covered. Once even coverage is achieved pull all the tape off the panels to reveal the base color. More than one layer can be sprayed into the graphics as well. When all the graphics are done and colors are how you want them to look we will lock the colors down with a clear basecoat to get ready for pinstriping or regular clear coat if the job is done. Step #10: Outlining Graphics - On this project we are outlining the scallops with an off white pinstripe. We are laying all the stripes by hand with a long hair pinstriping brush. Sometimes you can do this on your own by laying an outline with fine line tape and painting it on but this takes hours of practice. Once the job is to this stage you can usually take it to your local pinstriper or custom shop to have it striped and then you can re-clear the panels yourself. By having someone do the pinstriping for you it will save you time and will give you a more professional look without spending a bunch of money. Pinstriping will also cover up any mistakes that may have been made while laying out the design. Step #11: Freehand Pinstriping - This is an art in itself. I’m not going to go into how to learn to pinstripe or we would be here forever! Here again, you as the painter can take it to a pinstriper or custom shop to have February 2011
any artwork laid out on the bike and you will not be spending as much money as having the whole bike painted. On this bike we are doing a little bit of pinstriping on top of the tank and doing a big piece on each fender. I am laying down the off white first to match the outline color we have been using and then I am accenting it with a tan color that is close to the off white. Using 2 colors in the pinstriping makes for a more dramatic look and gives it some dimension. Again, any custom shop including myself will be more than happy to do the artwork or striping for you for a reasonable price so that you can have a nice job in the end without spending a ton of money for the whole job to be done. Just call the shop ahead of time to see how they prefer you to bring the bike to them.
of the job and seal everything in. The same rules apply as what we used to clear the bike before. Wipe any contaminants off with a damp paper towel very carefully and allow a couple minutes to dry. I usually do 3 coats of clear but use your judgment and follow the manufactures specifications. When the clear has dried you are free to buff it, polish it, and put it back on the bike. Now you have a whole new look for the bike and are ready to hit the road again. Hopefully this has helped solve some of your questions and you are now a bit more knowledgeable about what it takes to paint a bike. Remember to have fun with it and the possibilities are endless!
Step #12: Final Clear - When you have all the colors and graphics to your liking it is time to clear everything in. Nothing more has to be scuffed before clear as long as you are within a time window that allows the clear to adhere well enough. This window is usually 18 to 24 hours. It is important to clear the job within this time in order for everything to adhere properly. This is going to be the final layer

Alcohol Poisoning – What Ethanol is doing to your bike
By Gary Westphalen It has happened to one of my bikes. It has happened to one of Donna’s bikes. It may well have happened to yours. We fed them alcohol, and it made them sick. It sounds like a great plan, at first glance. By converting corn and other crops grown on American soil into ethanol, we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil. This alcohol is currently blended into most of the gasoline we buy. Regulations enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) state that each gallon of gasoline may consist of up to ten percent ethanol. Simple math suggests a corresponding savings of ten percent of our fossil fuel supply, along with a similar reduction of imported oil. Who could argue with that? But alcohol is not gasoline, and many of its properties are downright detrimental to the operation of your motorcycle, and the longevity of its parts. Thunder Roads West Virginia first examined this issue in a series of reports last fall. In our October and November, 2009 issues (see Passing Gas Parts I and II) we uncovered the dark side of this clear distillate. There are five main points that make ethanol just plain unsuitable for most bikes.
lower temperature than gasoline, yet it burns hotter. Inside your engine, this combination can lead to premature detonation – engine knock – which robs power and harms engine components. In our April, 2010 issue (see The $1,000 Fill-Up, on page 24) we brought you the story of a bike that had its head gaskets burned away. The service technician who rebuilt the engine attributed this to excessive heat in the cylinders, probably caused by ethanol blended gasoline. The shelf life of gasoline blended with ethanol is questionable. While the American Petroleum Institute says ethanol does not affect the longevity of a properly stored tank of fuel, most other knowledgeable sources disagree. The American Automobile Association, which has done extensive testing related to this subject, refers to ethanol blended gasoline as a “temperamental product.” Others believe that an ethanol blended tank of gas remains viable for no more than 90 to 100 days after the mixture was first blended.
the epa is proposing this label for e15 pumps. a skull and crossbones might be more appropriate.
Gallon-for-gallon, ethanol produces about a third less energy than gasoline. With a ten percent blend of ethanol, that means you will see a decrease in your engine’s power of about three to six percent, along with a corresponding decrease in mileage. If you’re driving a gas hog cage that only gets ten or twelve miles per gallon, you probably won’t take much note of the loss. But in a bike, where the difference can be quite obvious, you could lose as much as 20 or 30 miles from every tank of gas. Ethanol has a lower flash point, which means it explodes at a ® Kentucky Thunder Roads 6 34 ThUnder roads WesT VIrGInIa deCeMBer 2010
Ethanol is a powerful solvent. It can loosen rust and other contaminants that might otherwise lie undisturbed in your fuel system. It is able to dissolve rubber hoses, seals, plastics, and resins. Over time, ethanol can even eat away at soft metals like brass and aluminum. All of this dissolved material must then be pushed through your engine.
Finally, the worst behavior that ethanol brings to into your gas tank is its hygroscopic property, meaning it attracts water. In fact, ethanol would actually prefer to blend with water. When enough moisture has been drawn into the ethanol/ gasoline blend, the ethanol will actually surrender its chemical bond with the gasoline, in favor of the water. Then, the alcohol and water mixture drops out of suspension with the gasoline, and sinks to the bottom of your fuel tank. This is a process called phase separation. When the alcohol and water mixture is pumped into your engine, February 2011

you will experience hard starting, a significant loss of power, and engine misfires. That’s assuming you can even get it to start in the first place. Additionally, since the ethanol provides about three rating points worth of octane, the remaining gasoline will be well below the octane rating your engine needs.* Up until October 13th of this year, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had allowed gasoline distributors to blend no more than ten percent alcohol, by volume, into the fuel supply. That’s the highest concentration of alcohol approved by any motorcycle manufacturer for use in bikes. But, under pressure from ethanol industry groups, such as an organization called Growth Energy, the EPA has changed its rules. Growth Energy and 54 ethanol manufacturers petitioned the EPA to allow for a blend of 15 percent ethanol, or E15 as it is called. The petition was submitted under the Clean Air Act, which says the petitioner must show that the altered fuel “will not cause or contribute to the failure of an emission control system to achieve compliance with the emission standards to which it has been certified over its useful life.” The act makes no mention of protecting engines from damage, nor does it address loss of performance, fuel shelf life, or the solvent and hygroscopic issues related to ethanol. The EPA partially agreed with the petition, issuing a waiver of its regulations to allow for E15 to be sold for use in cars, light-duty trucks, and SUV’s from the model year 2007 and newer. However, the EPA has withheld approval of E15 fuel for cars from the model years 2001 through 2006, pending further testing, and does not plan to approve it for use in older cars, heavy duty vehicles, motorcycles, and off-road motors such as lawn mowers. The problem is, while E15 fuel is to be clearly labeled and dispensed as such, that dispensing is going to be happening at the same pump islands you use to fill your bike. The first gas station to sell the high-ethanol blend was in Vinton, Iowa. Within a couple weeks of the rule change, E15 was being offered at the very same pump as all other grades of gasoline. Although it is pumped through a separate hose, E15 is selected in the same row of buttons as every other grade of gas. An uninformed biker could easily opt for this cheaper blend, without realizing the risks being taken. The federal ruling prohibits the sale of E15 for use in bikes, and there are stiff penalties involved. A retailer that allows E15 fuel to be pumped into a vehicle not approved for its use can face a www.thunderroadskentucky.com www.thunderroadswv.com
But, even if the new E15 gasoline never comes near your bike, the problems presented by the ten percent ethanol blend remain. “This year we’ve seen more poor running conditions with fuel injected bikes than we’ve ever seen,” says Chuck Wiseman of JT Cycle and Hoodlum Garage, in Beckley. Chuck thinks the short time frame in which ethanol-blended fuel remains viable is the biggest problem his customers are facing. “A lot of our riders are weekends only, and sometimes the bike might sit for two or three weeks. I’m thinking that’s probably where the majority of it came from. We did find bad fuel in lots of them, and the customer is like, ‘How can that be? The bike has only sat for a few weeks.’” Additionally, Chuck has found numerous bikes this year with plugged gas cap vents, which he also attributes to the presence of ethanol. So, what can you do to protect your bike’s engine from ethanol damage? There are a few things. First and foremost, make sure you buy good gasoline. There are still a few gas stations around selling gasoline that is not blended with ethanol. If you can find a station selling ethanol-free gasoline, patronize it religiously. Ideally, the ethanol-blend you are probably going to have to settle for is reasonably fresh, since the lifespan of blended gas is questionable. It should also be the proper octane rating for your motorcycle engine. Consult your service tech or bike’s manual for the answer, but I’m betting your tech will tell you to run premium. Since ethanol accounts for about three of the octane rating points, the more octane the actual gasoline brings to the equation, the better. Buy your gasoline from stations that pump the three different grades of gasoline through three different hoses. Odds are that the guy in front of you pumped the cheap stuff into his minivan. So, when you roll in and hit the Hi-Test button, those first few slurps your bike gets won’t be the top shelf juice you’re paying for. How much low-grade you get depends on the delivery system employed at that station. I like this one: Don’t let the gas sit in your tank for very long. This is a good thing. The only way to keep a healthy turnover rate in that tank is to ride, ride, ride. Those are all fairly common sense suggestions. They help, to a certain extent. But, even if you follow those suggestions, you may still have problems. Ethanol and water can still lead to phase separation, for example. Or, you can still end up with a tank of old gas. The only other option is the use of a fuel additive. Some bikers swear by them, and others swear at them. There are very real reasons why some fuel additives will only make your ethanol problems worse. That’s the easy part. This issue gets trickier when you look at some additives that just might be what the doctor ordered. Are they salvation, or snake oil? Thunder Roads West Virginia will examine the subject of fuel additives in part two of Alcohol Poisoning in our January, 2011 issue.
