Well, here we are once again waiting for the weather to break and the fun to start. For all of you wondering about Little Sturgis this year there will be a rally, it just won’t be called Little Sturgis. The name of the rally will be The Kentucky Bikerfest. That is what I have been told, and I should have more details about it next month. We’ve got some great pictures from the Mid America Show and also the V-Twin Expo for you this month along with several other stories for you to enjoy. Mid America Motorcycle Expo 2011 Now that the doors have closed on the newly named Evansville Indiana indoors motorcycle trade show, the reviews have been fantastic. Owensboro Biker News has been the promoter who for the past four years has worked to bring the life to reality. This year we worked with the newly formed Cycleworks Promotions, to make sure this event did not end after the previous owner Lain Promotions decided to discontinue the event and other events that they had owned and financed previously. With the new owner that Owensboro Biker News had, the challenge of contacting all the sponsors and vendors from the three shows prior. Most every vendor contacted agreed to come spend the weekend in Evansville, and enjoy the continuing growth of the event! We added new displays and recruited new vendors until we were at exhibit hall capacity of floor space. With Tim Banks, owner of Cycleworks Chopper and his positive reputation as a custom bike builder, custom bike shop proprietor, and national rally vendor, the vendors seemed to be eager to join us for the premier event for Cycleworks Promotions. So when we opened the doors on Saturday morning we had 74 vendors representing 11 states and 67 bikes entered into the judging, now there were over 150 bikes on display inside the exhibit hall. Saturday afternoon we had the band “Amplified” playing live on the Lucas Oil Products stage. These guys can really rock! You can get more information about booking the band on facebook by searching “We R Amplified”. Go see them at one of their booked events, and schedule them for your own event. You will not be disappointed! Throughout the day thousands of motorcycle industry supporters visited the show. Lines at the ticket counter were a common sight all day long. During the afternoon, there was a new custom built USMC Toys for Tots Tribute Bike unveiled, this bike was built by Cycleworks specifically for this show. You can read more about the storyline and the future of that machine in another Thunder Roads Kentucky article. These bikes can also be linked to the “Chopper culture” after the war as they were chopped, bobbed, and customized by the returning veterans who enjoyed the availability of so many of the dependable and cheap olive drab military bikes. They were sold as surplus for years and often just sold by the pound like scrap metal. I have also heard rumors of thousands of them being buried overseas and at home after the war. S & G still has a lot of the surplus military marked parts still new in the box from WW II. I took these photos after we unloaded the 66 year old “Liberator” as the Europeans called these bikes. Two of the cooler things about this bike is the original art work on the S & G Custom Cycles is known far & front windshield making fun of Hitler and the two ladies photos wide for not only their work on old Harleys but for having a large inventory tucked in the windshield. Jesus starts off by saying: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.” First we must notice this man left his Holy place to go “Down,” and anytime a Christian decides to “go down” they always open themselves up to an attack. Then the Bible tells us that he “fell among thieves.” We can not “fall” unless we first “go down.” These thieves represent your enemies, relatives, and some are your old road dogs. Ever notice how some people don’t like each other, but when it comes to you they’ll team up to come against you? One thing I have noticed about thieves, they don’t rob a bum. Thieves only rob people of value. So, if you’re a spiritual bum, you’ve got nothing to worry about. The Bible says “they stripped him, wounded him, and left him half dead.” Most Christians today will focus on the half dead part; but I choose to focus on the half alive part. The devil can’t kill you unless you let him. Then we read “there came a certain priest.” This priest (pastor) represents religion. How relieved this man must have been to hear the footsteps of someone coming his way and to see it was a pastor! Next, he crossed over to
the other side” only now to hear those same footsteps walking away, and then “a Levite came his way” (representing orderauthority-government). Now for the second time his hopes are high as he hears more footsteps and sees it’s a Levite; however, the Bible says “he crossed over to the other side,” and as he heard those footsteps walking away he lost all hope. This is the same shape the modern day Church is in. Modern day Church of today has left the God of the Bible, its Holy place, and gone down and has fallen among thieves. As a result, Christians have been spiritually stripped, wounded, and left for dead. Religion and our government has Crossed Over To The Other Side,” the dark side! This is why so many Christians live defeated lives. They see no hope for the future and have lost trust in religion and the government. Then we read in verse 33; “But a certain Samaritan.” A Samaritan was considered to be the lowest from of life to a religious Jew. We must first notice there was “a CERTAIN man, a CERTAIN Priest, and a CERTAIN Samaritan.” God will never leave you nor forsake you. God may send a Priest and then a Levite to help you; however, if they turn their back on you, He’ll send the person lest likely to help you…..and it just might be “A BIKER!” The Bible says that this Good Samaritan (Biker) had “compassion on him,” and this is the key to ministry, compassion. Then he “bound up his wounds and set him on his own beast (Harley) brought him to an Inn (Church) and took care of him.” This Good Samaritan (Biker) paid for all the expenses and told the host “Take care of him.” In the Bible the letter “T” in Take is capitalized, meaning that this was not a request but an order (that’s just like a Biker to order people around). He said “whatsoever you spend on him, WHEN I COME AGAIN, I will repay thee.” All of this represents Jesus Christ. When we have gone down from our holy position with Him, we will be robed, stripped, wounded, left for dead from the world system. When religions and the governments pass you by in your time of need, Jesus has come down from His position into the gutter where we are, bound up our wounds and will take us to a position where we can recover. It is a must that we remember what He said last: “WHEN I COME AGAIN.” Jesus is coming back and He will repay those that helped His children and repay those that “CROSSED OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE.” So until next time, “Keep your kickstand up and your face in the wind” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

The Story Behind the USMC Toys
for Tots Tribute Bike Build
the bike would be unveiled at the Mid America Motorcycle Expo in Evansville, Indiana on January 29th & 30th of 2011. The crowd went wild! Just knowing Tim and his background is like knowing the bike was going to be a special machine. Tim is the proud owner of 9 National Easyrider Bike Show Awards for custom build bikes. He also has won the Great American Biker Build Off in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and has won numerous other awards. One of Tim’s more commonly recognized bikes is the Hooker Header Magazine bike. Yes, the custom bike you see on almost every Hooker Header Bike was built in Owensboro Kentucky by the same Cycleworks Choppers.
Owensboro Biker News & Thunder Roads Kentucky held the USMC Toys for Tots Biker Ball on November, 20th 2010. This event is one of the largest Toys for Tots fundraisers in the State of Kentucky. Matt Fitzgerald, a decorated Marine who was representing the Gy Sgt W.J. Norris Detachment 804 of the Marine Corps League (the detachment that covers the 13 surrounding counties of Daviess), presented Sergeant Major Ronald Himsworth’s challenge coin that was personally presented to Corporal Matt Fitzgerald while on active duty. The unbelievable airbrush and gold leaf paint finishing work was applied by Steve Ray artist/owner of Airbrush Inc., his store and studio is located in Owensboro’s Towne Square Mall. The engine is a 100 cubic inch Harley-Davidson case with Elderbrock highflo custom designed heads, these were ported and chambered to handle the supercharged gas being forced into the cylinders from the Magna-Charger supercharger that is direct driven from the ignition end of the crankshaft, with the end results over 200 HP. be a special moment or announcement. From concept to reality, Tim worked very closely with area Marine’s and the entire Marine dress code guide was used in every step of the finish process. The custom paint colors were scanned from USMC Dress Blue Uniforms, the buttons on the tank are actual Military Issue correct USMC Buttons. The belt buckle on the tank is also the real deal, not one corner of detail was overlooked, down to white grips simulating the white gloves worn by a USMC Marine in Dress Blue. The frame and miscellaneous parts were powder coated in house at Cycleworks, as well as the entire air ride suspension. This bike sits flat on the ground when lowered, and lifts to a 3”-3 ¼” ride height. I could tell you about items and details for hours, and still leave things unmentioned; the best way to experience the feel of this machine is to stand near it during one of the future shows it will visit. DOWN IN THE STRIP MINES
In my misspent youth, back in the 60’s and 70’s, much of my riding was off road, in the woods of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, but I often made forays into Ohio, particularly the abandoned strip mines at Hanging Rock across the Ohio River from Ashland. Here was a moonscape of ruined land, scraped and gouged by mining equipment for years until nothing of the original surface was left but jumbles of rock and earth piled in no apparent order along old gravel roads. There were ponds everywhere, some looking incongruously pristine in such a devastated setting, but most in some state of greenish decay. There were slurry dumps, where the wash water from the mining was ponded and left to evaporate, resulting in what looked like immense dry lake beds, flat, gray and cracked. Mick Reynolds and I went to Hanging Rock often to satisfy his taste for flat tracking and mine for crawling around amongst the rocks. Mick had a Triumph TR6 and was fascinated by flat track racing and Gary Nixon, Triumph’s champion of the time. Mick went to Viet Nam in the Air Force (where he spent his tour as a parachute packer. He said that he never lacked for friends among the air crews, who had a real incentive to keep him happy.) Returning home, he took the TR 6 apart and converted it to a modified flat track replica, with TT-style pipes, rendering it useless as a street machine. But on the dirt roads around the strip mines, Mick could blast along, breaking the rear wheel loose in long slides, happy as the proverbial clam at high tide. We’d load his Triumph and my Suzuki on my trailer and head to Hanging Rock where we’d unload, part company after a bit and regroup when we’d both worn ourselves out. On one such outing, I was prowling along a high bank of tailings when I got the notion to ride out across one of the slurry pond beds. I was enamored of wheelies in those days and the long wide open flat expanse looked quite inviting for such silliness. I rolled out onto the cracked surface, got up a little speed in second gear and hoisted the front wheel, picking up speed and finding the balance point, that elusive spot where one could keep the bike up in the air for as long as one wanted....sheer nirvana, until the bike disappeared underneath me. There was a moment of weightlessness, a “does not compute” confusion, and then I found myself up to my armpits in stinking goo with only the handlebars of my TS 250 visible in front of me. We had broken through the cracked crust of the pond, which I could now see was only a few inches thick at this part, and fallen into the concentrated mire of whatever they’d washed off the coal a few generations ago. It was about the consistency of heavy gear oil and smelled worse. For a moment I thought I was going on down, like one of those pith-helmeted explorers in the old jungle movies, caught in quicksand. I realized that my old Boy Scout manual had prepared me for just such an event (not likely that it was in their contemplation at the time) in that I could pull myself to the surface, www.thunderroadskentucky.com
spreading my weight out as if on thin ice, and crabcrawl to the firmer crust nearer the edge. By the time I got to a place where I could stand up, I was covered completely in the goo and mud and I was exhausted. I began to climb up the tailings bank to make my way back to the trailer to find Mick and devise a way to rescue my bike. We weren’t the only ones who made use of the lonely strip mine roads. Teenagers often came out here to park in privacy for lessons in anatomy, physiology and mammalian hormonal influences. As I got to the top of the bank, drawing each noisy breath like a grizzly bear with a head cold, I emerged onto the road right beside a car in which such exploration was well in progress. I recall the look on the young lady’s face (her partner with his back to me obscured the rest of her except for her knees) as the mud splattered helmeted creature, covered in oozing brown glop and groaning as if in torment, appeared suddenly in her view. She screamed, his head hit the roof of the car and my wheezing attempts at explanation were completely ignored. He vaulted over to the front seat, sans clothing, and the car accelerated away, spraying gravel to complete my sticky ensemble as his companion, still in the back seat looked at me in wide eyed horror through the rear window. I wonder if they ever told that story to anyone....and if they did, who would have believed it. I located Mick and we hatched a plan to use connected bike tie-down straps to pull out the Suzuki. We placed the Triumph on the harder part of the crust near the edge. I crawled on my belly back out to the bike and hooked a strap around the center of the bars, between the clamps, and scuttled my way back to Mick. We used the Triumph’s power to slowly pull the submerged 250 from the muck, looking like a prehistoric animal being dredged from the tar pits. The pull was hard enough to straighten out one of the strap hooks. We dragged it to the edge of the slurry pond and then pushed it up the bank to the trailer for the ride home. Once there, I had to take the bike completely apart, finding foul-smelling muck in every possible crevice...and several places I would not have thought possible. While I had it apart, I hack sawed off the peg mounts and had them welded back a few inches, to make the bike easier to wheelie....I guess part of the lesson had escaped me. LUCK OF THE IRISH HEARTY STEW 1-1/2 to 2 lbs. of Boneless Sirloin Steak Meat; cut into bite-size pieces 2 Tbls. of All Purpose Flour 2 -3 Tbls. butter or margarine 1 Large Yellow Onion; chopped in big chunks 1 Can of Beef Stock and 1 Carton or Box of Beef Stock 1 Can of Stewed Tomatoes; un-drained 1 Envelope of Good Seasons Garlic & Herb Dressing Mix 1 lb. of red potatoes, jackets left on, cut into 3/4 inch chunks 2 Handfuls of pre-packaged baby carrots 1 Cup of Frozen Peas 1 Cup of either Frozen Corn or Frozen Broccoli, or both 2 Tbls. Worcestershire Sauce 1/2 Palm-full of Thyme 2 Tbls. Pearl Barley (in spice aisle any grocery) 1 Heaping Tbls. of Parsley 1 Bay Leaf 4 Beef Boullion Cubes; dissolved in 1 cup hot water Melt 1/4 stick of butter or 2 tablespoons of margarine over medium heat. Dredge your meat chunks thoroughly through flour and then dredge again. Place into melted butter in a Dutch Oven and let brown up good on all sides. Remove to side plate. Now, on medium-high heat, sprinkle apprx. 3 heaping tablespoons of all-purpose flour into same pot. Keep working it around and around for about a minute or so to cook off the flour taste. Next, add your dissolved beef boullion cubes hot water mixture and again, let it all get mixed in well. Keep that wooden spoon moving! Next, add the (1) can of beef stock and keep an eye on it as it will thicken up quickly. Turn heat down to medium-low. Add the box of beef stock now. Add back in the beef chunks, potatoes, tomatoes, dressing mix, onion chunks, Worcestershire, thyme, barley, parsley and bay leaf. Cook covered for 45 minutes. The last 15 minutes, remove bay leaf and if needed, if stock too thick, add 1 cup of hot water. This will dilute the beef flavor so only add it if truly necessary. Now add in all your frozen veggies and a large pat of butter or 1 Tbl. of margarine, whichever. Take cover off and let go until frozen carrots are tender throughout. Serve in big soup bowls along with a cold apple/walnut & pear salad mixed in creamed mayonnaise and chopped Romaine lettuce. Serve hot crusty bread and take some room temp. margarine or butter and throw in a palmfull of basil and spread on thick slices of hot bread. Aye! Now this Irish Stew is truly “magically delicious”!

ONION PIE.......VIDALIA STYLE 3 Cups of thinly sliced Vidalia Onions 1/2 Stick of Melted Butter 1 Pre-made Pie Shell 2 Eggs; beaten 3 Tbls. All-Purpose Flour 1/2 Cup Half & Half 1 Small Tub (8 oz.) of Sour Cream 1 Tub (8 oz.) Philly Cream Cheese (room temp.) 10 Slices of Hickory Smoked Bacon cooked crisp 1 Pkg. of pre-sliced mushrooms 1-1/2 cups of Grier cheese (get from Deli counter) Salt & Pepper to Taste Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Melt butter down in a skillet and add onions and mushrooms and saute until lightly browned. Place your pie pan on a sheet pan in case any drips over. Line bottom of pie crust with sauteed onions and mushrooms. In a small bowl beat up the two eggs and the flour together until smooth. Gradually add the half & half, cream cheese, sour cream and salt & pepper to taste. Mix well and pour all over the onions in the pie shell. Crumble bacon all over the top of pie and distribute evenly. Bake for 25 minutes and the last five, slide oven rack out and top generously with Grier cheese and let bake for 5 more minutes. Let cool 5 mins. before cutting. OH SO LUCKY! IRISH GREEN CUPCAKES with GREEN BUTTERCREAM FROSTING 1 Pkg. of White Cake Mix Follow package directions, only add GREEN food coloring to the mix as dark as you prefer. Bake as directed. If baking directly in cupcake tins be sure and spray bottom & sides generously. If baking in cupcake papers, only fill 3/4 full. Cool thoroughly. Buy 2 cans of Betty Crocker Buttercream frosting and again add food coloring to the desired green that you want. Frost cupcakes generously. Take a butter knife and dab at the frosting to make stiff peaks after you’re done frosting. Looks very pro. *Tip: Take frosting and place it in a plastic ketchup bottle like you see in Diners, and stick it a 1/2 inch into the side of your cupcake and squirt to have a creamy filling surprise when you bite into cupcake. Another cool & delicious treat tip is chop up a bunch of chocolate mint squares, sprinkle over quality vanilla ice-cream and then pour heated, bottled caramel sauce all over the top. by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: What makes us “Southerners?” What I hear most is that people in other parts of the country are not as respectful, friendly or as warm as people in the south. What do you think? I tend to agree with this assessment but Southerners can also get their back up when something isn’t right. Not many Southerners are afraid to plant their feet and say, “Hell no” or “Back off” when someone starts pissing on their boot. We know what rain is and what it isn’t. So what do Southerners think about gas prices going through the roof? Do they believe that an electric car or motorcycle, that costs double what a gas operated vehicle costs, justifies being controlled by Middle Eastern countries and high gas prices? We have extremely large oil reserves in Alaska and newly discovered oil reserves in the Northwest United States that are double those in Alaska. We have oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico and off the west coast. We currently have enough reserves to supply gasoline for 175 to 200 years. We have natural gas supplies for about 500 years. So why do we allow our government to put these oil reserves off limits and require us to use gasoline made from Middle Eastern Oil? The main reason is the government, which is full of socialist environmentalists, wants this situation. It raises the cost of gasoline to a point that electric transportation looks as good as gasoline fueled transportation. By increasing air quality standards, stopping oil production in the US and taking your tax money to subsidize electric car production they can make you switch to very expensive electric cars. 24 Thunder Roads Kentucky
Our country used to be based on free commerce and minimal government interference. Today we have a government that is taking control of every aspect of our lives and we are paying the cost. Have you gone outside lately? Do you have trouble breathing the air today? Air pollution is lower today in major cities than it was about a century ago. So why do we allow our government to kiss up to environmental socialists and turn us into a society of something like Chinese peasants? I’m going broke using less and doing with less. Government regulation in the reason! Is your back up? Mine is! Speaking of back up; one of our great American veterans and Rolling Thunder members was killed February 1, 2011, by someone who couldn’t wait for traffic to pass and turned through a line of cars and into a funeral procession in the second lane. They ran over Bob Ward on his motorcycle as he escorted a Navy veteran to his final rest. Most Tennesseans are respectful of funeral processions and pull to the side of the road. The world doesn’t stop if we pull off for a couple of minutes out of respect. We need to educate the Yankees moving in that we do things different down here. We respect our neighbors and their family when their life ends. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog

NEWS BYTES NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) KIDS JUST WANT TO RIDE ACT Two years ago the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) implemented the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 to regulate the lead content in children’s toys, inadvertently banning the sale of youth model all-terrain vehicles and off-highway motorcycles due to trace levels of lead in some inaccessible components. On January 25, Representative Denny Rehberg (R-MT) introduced H.R. 412, the Kids Just Want to Ride Act of 2011, which would exempt child-sized dirtbikes and ATVs from the “Lead Law” and provide a legislative fix to the misapplied restrictions. The Kids Just Want to Ride Act aims to clarify the previous federal law, which the consumer agency claims they must strictly interpret as written despite having twice postponed enforcement. Rep. Rehberg joined 22 fellow lawmakers from both parties in the House to introduce the new bipartisan act, calling the legislation “…the best way to clarify congressional intent and ensure that children have access to the youth-sized vehicles that will keep them safe.” Senator Jon Tester (DMT) has announced plans to introduce similar legislation in the Senate. Congress conducted initial hearings on the CPSIA on February 17 in the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, and reviewed CPSC resources for implementing the lead law. TAKING AIM AT CHILD PASSENGERS A Virginia Beach lawmaker has tried and failed to prohibit children under 8 from riding on motorcycles, but despite the defeat of HB 1850 the issue is recurring in states across the country. In opposing the measure, Matt Danielson, legal counsel for the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM), said that there have been no fatalities among children under 8 riding on motorcycles in the past ten years. “I don’t look at this as a governmental issue. I look at this as a parental issue,” said Danielson on behalf of VCOM, a political action committee that represents motorcyclists’ interests in the General Assembly. “I think the parent can make a better decision about whether their child is ready to ride than can some legislator in Richmond.” Such reasoning hasn’t deterred other state legislation, such as HB 2232 in Oregon that would ban kids under 7 from riding as a passenger, despite existing state law that requires a motorcycle passenger’s feet must reach the footpegs. Furthermore, in a bid to ban children from riding motorcycles in the Philippines, a ranking senator has cited the State’s power to invoke parens patriae, or the constitutional mandate to “assume and act as a natural parent or guardian in order to safeguard the welfare of any child or individual or an incapacitated and dependent minor who is in need of protection against danger, risk of lives and limbs.” 26 Thunder Roads Kentucky
With the growing number of motorcycle users worldwide, and with economic influences making motorbikes the most affordable mode of transportation, the matter of children riding and who is ultimately responsible for their safety and welfare will be a mounting concern. U.S. HOUSE BILL ENCOURAGES STATE VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION PROGRAMS U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) has introduced House Bill 229, the Michael Jon Newkirk Transportation Safety Enhancement Act of 2011 that establishes national standards for state safety inspections for motor vehicles. The bill requires states to establish minimum annual vehicle safety inspection programs or lose specific federal funds. Included in the requirements listed in the language of this new bill, states must enact and enforce “a law that requires the owner of a motor vehicle registered in the state to present the vehicle for inspection on an annual basis to ensure that the vehicle meets or exceeds motor vehicle safety standards to be established by the state.” Less than half the states have vehicle safety inspection programs and of those programs that do exist, many have inconsistent standards, a situation that HB 229 intends to address by standardizing such safety inspection procedures. WARNING: AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY DEVICES COMING SOON TO MOTORCYCLES Within the next two years, motorcycles could be sporting collision detection and other safety features more typically found installed in cars. The new safety systems being tested for motorcycles include speed limit warnings, information about neighboring vehicles and changing lanes, and information of the tightness of road bends and the speed in which to turn. According to a report from the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), tests are being completed to bring the latest technologies found on cars to two-wheels, and the rise in motorcyclist fatalities has prompted researchers to adapt the first bike-based safety systems by late 2012. MIRA (the Motor Industry Research Association) acts as a testing and innovation center for carmakers and has been carrying out tests on the “Saferider” systems on road bikes and simulators. An ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) consultant at MIRA, Jonathan Moore, said of the project: “Saferider takes the driver safety systems that are becoming standard on cars and tries to adapt them to the unique needs of motorcyclists.” Moore said making safety systems on motorcycles useful was “challenging” because of all the distractions to which riders were subjected. With traffic noise and motorcycle helmets insulating riders from the traditional audible alarms found on car collision systems, researchers have looked for ways to alert bikers of pending danger with tactile warning systems such as vibrating seats and special gloves. New hi-tech systems could also protect riders from themselves, as one system being tested warns that a rider is going too fast to negotiate a turn. MIRA has developed “smart” software that acts as a “co-pilot” which, with the March 2011
NEWS BYTES help of a digital map, knows what speed a motorcyclist should be travelling to make it around an approaching curve in the road. MOTORCYCLE SALES CONTINUE DECLINE, BUT SHOW SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT Sales of new motorcycles, scooters and ATVs dropped from 2009 to 2010, but some increases were seen in the month of December according to a recently released sales report for 2010 from the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). In 2009, motorcycle sales saw a drastic drop. Close to 360,000 fewer motorcycles were sold in 2009 as compared to 2008, and sales have continued to decline. Total motorcycle sales, including scooters, through 2010 dropped 15.8%, or 82,198 fewer units in 2010 for a total of 439,678 motorcycles sold this year. If you break it down into category, off-road, dual-sport, highway, and scooters all saw a decrease in sales this year. The biggest loser was off-highway motorcycles, which saw a 23.3% decrease with a drop of nearly 25,000 bikes. The scooter segment saw the smallest decrease at 9.4%, amounting to 3,000 fewer units than were sold in 2009. ATV sales were down 64,000 units, or 20% down. December saw increases in some segments over the prior year month. Scooter sales were up 20% over the yearago month, with an increase of 322 units. Dual purpose motorcycles also increased, at 7.2%, with a rise of 86 units over December 2009. SOUTH CAROLINA BILL WOULD ALLOW CHARITABLE RAFFLES With many states around the nation cracking down on everything from poker runs to raffles, lawmakers in South Carolina moving to ensure that local churches, schools and nonprofits do not unknowingly break the law when they hold charitable raffles. Legislation, already approved by a Senate committee 18-4, would change the state Constitution to allow the groups to hold a limited number of raffles and casino nights annually -- as long as 90% of the money raised goes to benefit charitable causes. “It’s a good start,” said Austin Coates of ABATE South Carolina, a motorcyclist rights nonprofit that holds hundreds of raffles annually for Special Olympics, breast cancer prevention, burn victims and others. “But there’ll be a fight ahead before it becomes law.” The bill next heads to the full Senate for consideration. Should it survive there, it would go to the House. Ultimately, however, voters would have to approve any change in the state Constitution. MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINTS IN GEORGIA DURING BIKE WEEK The state of Georgia has received a $70,000 federal grant to launch motorcycle-only checkpoints in early March, just as Daytona Bike Week is getting underway. For most travelers, their route will take them through Georgia and likely into awaiting roadblocks to check for such things as proper license and current registration, insurance, DOTapproved helmets, EPA-approved mufflers, working horn and lights, etc, etc. www.thunderroadskentucky.com
“We were informed by unnamed sources that the Check Points would start in early March to coincide with the Daytona Bike Week event,” said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. “Most points of entry to Florida will be involved, so anyone traveling through Georgia to Daytona might want to rethink their route.” The US Defenders have issued a Call To Action regarding the proliferation of these motorcycle-only roadblocks being funded by NHTSA grants, and are urging the motorcycle community to voice their opposition to these so-called “Safety Checks” by contacting NHTSA, the U.S. DOT and most importantly by asking your own federal legislators to support H.R. 1498 by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to retain a ban on NHTSA’s ability to lobby State Legislators using our federal dollars through the “Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstration” grant program (DTNH2210-R-00386). “These roadblocks or checkpoints for motorcycles ONLY are being conducted illegally and are discriminatory to say the least,” says Escondido Paul, National Lt. Commander of the US Defenders. “This is one more piece of evidence of the constant profiling attempts targeting our community at large.” WASHINGTON STATE BILL WOULD PROHIBIT MOTORCYCLE PROFILING The Confederation of Clubs, US Defenders and ABATE of Washington are seeking support for legislation that would condemn and prevent the widespread law enforcement practice of motorcycle profiling. The Washington Courts have confirmed that the Washington State Patrol is guilty of unlawful profiling and discrimination against motorcyclists. In 2002 the Court granted a permanent injunction against the State Patrol’s use of a training pamphlet titled BIKER 101 (Wulfekuhle v. Washington State Patrol). However, on November 23, 2009 the WSP, under oath, explicitly admitted that they profile members of motorcycle clubs and continue to use BIKER 101 as a training manual. This gross violation of a Washington State Superior Court injunction proves that the pattern of motorcycle profiling continues and that the WSP brazenly violates the liberties of motorcyclists even in the face of judicial reprimand. To curb such injustices, Rep. AMA Press Release American Motorcyclist Association Urges ‘Lead Law’ Exemption at Congressional Hearing PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- In written comments submitted for a congressional hearing held on Feb. 17, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) asked lawmakers to exempt kid-sized off-highway vehicles (OHVs) from the “lead law” that effectively bans the sale of the vehicles at the end of the year. In the statement sent to the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade that held a hearing related to the lead law on Feb. 17, Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government relations, noted the law does more harm than good concerning child-sized motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). In addition to representing the AMA, Moreland also spoke for the AMA’s sister organization, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA). The subcommittee held the hearing to review the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, which is known as the lead law, as well as to review the resources of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which is the federal agency responsible for implementing the law. The CPSIA bans the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under that contains more than a specified amount of lead in any accessible part. It also requires all children’s products undergo periodic testing by independent laboratories approved by the CPSC. The CPSC has delayed enforcing key portions of the law until after the end of the year. Unless the CPSIA is changed by then, the sale of child-sized motorcycles and ATVs will effectively be banned. “While the Act was passed with laudable intent, it has created a well-documented safety hazard for children, a severe and unwarranted disruption to families who recreate together, and a deleterious effect on youth amateur racing,” Moreland wrote. “Additionally, the inclusion of youthmodel off-highway vehicles (OHVs) in the Act has created an economic disaster for the youth-model motorcycle and ATV industry. “Of greatest concern, however, are the unintended safety consequences for youth OHV riders,” he continued. “As you may know, the OHV community and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have worked extensively together to develop appropriate OHV size and operating guidelines for young riders. To suddenly eliminate the availability of all youth OHVs is counterproductive to all the work that the OHV community and the CPSC have done to promote youth-rider safety. “The elimination of these vehicles because of an unsupported suspicion that they may pose a theoretical threat of a lead hazard effectively trades away a proven safety intervention for an unproven one,” he wrote. “As you continue your deliberations on this important matter, we urge you and the members of your committee to support H.R. 412, the Kids Just Want to Ride Act of 2011, introduced by Rep. Denny Rehberg,” Moreland wrote. “This bill offers the most promising and viable legislative remedy available to permanently exclude youth-model motorcycles and ATVs from the perilous and unintended consequences of the CPSIA.” Moreland encourages riders and parents concerned about the CPSIA to contact their federal lawmakers and urge them to support H.R. 412. Rehberg (R-Mont.) said: “The Kids Just Want to Ride Act is the best way to clarify congressional intent and ensure that children have access to the youth-sized vehicles that will keep them safe. This month I want to revive the blues revival, starting with a new book about Stevie Ray Vaughn called “Day By Day and Night by Night : His Early Years 1954-1982, written by Craig Hopkins and published by backbeat books. Twenty years after his death, this tells the story about the early years in Dallas and Austin. His struggles with alcohol and drug addiction as well as his struggle to become the legendary guitarist that he became. All of you have seen the end result of Stevie’s success, only a few know what you have to endure to become a pro musician. It can be the most gratifying and the most depressing way to make a living. This book gives you the insight of a making of a blues icon. Its a good read and chock full of interviews and little know facts about his day to day life. Check it out. I think you will like it,especially if you are a SRV fan. We have all heard about SRV, but now I want to talk about a new DVD that covers a musician that never achieved super star status, but he was a great talent and a killer player. His name is Rory Gallagher. Rory was a Irish folk and blues musician that was far more interested in music than being star. I remember I had his first album when I was a kid and man, he freaked me out. This guy was every bit a good as Clapton, Beck or most guitar heroes of the day. What hurt him more than anything was the fact that he didn’t like singles. Basically he didn’t want a hit record. I guess he felt that would be selling out. This DVD encompasses TV appearances on German TV’s Beat Club an interviews by such people he influenced as the Edge, U2’s guitarist. He passed away in 1995 from complications from a liver transplant. Being a Irishman and a guitarist may not be the best thing for your health. Check out this book and DVD if you love the blues! Its Big Mike approved!! As always, the first weekend of February is one of my favorites of the year. For the eleventh time Easyriders Magazine has held it V-Twin Expo at Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. With the economy down as it is, the show had less vendors and attendees than previous years, but this made for a better show as vendors were more eager to talk and show their products than in more crowded years. About every major manufacturer was there with their new or existing lineup of parts and accessories for V-Twin motorcycles. Front wheels and tires in sizes 26 and 30 inch were something new. Most every company had something new to either make your motorcycle perform, look, handle, or ride better. Jagg had an oil cooler with a small electric fan that comes on when oil temperatures get to a certain degree. A new company in the motorcycle business, Medallion, had a cool new guage package in different colors and designs to replace your stock Harley gauges at a really reasonable price. More and more companies are making parts and accessories for three wheel motorcycles as their popularity increases. Some companies had some pretty cool accessories for organizing or concealing items in saddlebags and even in the floorboards. One company had a one gallon, spill and vapor proof, EPA approved, gas can that hardly took up any room in the back of the saddlebag. A lot of the booths had pretty young ladies signing posters or passing out product literature. If this didn’t draw you into the booths, nothing would. Famous name bike builders like Roland Sands, Arlen Ness, Paul Yaffee, Ron Finch, Jesse Rooke, and even Paul Tuttle Jr. were on hand talking to their many fans and customers. On Sunday after the show closed, Drag Specialties again had a fantastic Super Bowl party for their many customers in the Westin Hotel Ballroom. On Monday the show was over and the dealers were taking orders for their products and inviting everyone back next year. If you are in any type of business in the motorcycle world, you need to attend this show. I have been to everyone since it started in 2001 and it gets better every year. You never know whom in the motorcycle world you may meet, or what new product you may see before you see it on the street. I can’t wait until next year to see what they come up with next!
