COCONUT FRIED SHRIMP w/ ORANGE 4 Heaping Tbls. of Parmessan Grated Cheese; MARMELADE & RED PEPPER-FLAKE DIPPING divided up 1 Tbl. Whole Milk or Heavy Cream SAUCE (inspired by: Paula & Bobby Deen segment w/ a Touch of Thunder added in for good measure)

1 Bottle Peanut Oil for frying (Peanut Oil has a verg high tolerance to burning) 1/2 Cup of All-Purpose Flour Salt & Cracked Pepper to Taste 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder 2/3 Cup of Coconut Milk 2 Cups Shredded Sweetened Coconut 1/2 Cup of Panko (Japaneese Bread Crumbs; in the same aisle as flour and regular bread crumbs) 1 Pound Large Shrimp; peeled & deveined or you can use frozen shrimp with tails left on. Just thaw first and remove shells. In a large, heavy pot, heat apprx. 2 inches of peanut oil until the end of a wooden spoon inserted in middle of oil makes little tiny bubbles all around the wood. In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, salt & pepper and baking powder. Add the coconut milk and whisk until smooth. Let batter stand for apprx. 15 minutes. Now, in a wide shallow bowl, toss the shredded coconut and the Panko together. Put your shrimp; several at time, into the batter. Remove one at a time and dredge it into the coconut & Panko mixture, pressing down to help the mixture adhere to the shrimp. Fry the shrimp in batches in hot peanut oil for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown on both sides. Use a slotted spoon and transfer shrimp to a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Serve shrimp w/ below dipping sauce. DIPPING SAUCE 1/2 Cup of Orange Marmalade 4 tsps. of Rice Wine Vinegar 1/2 tsp. Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Add all Dipping Sauce ingredients to a small pot on low temp. Heat thru for apprx. 10 minutes. Stir every now and then to combine flavors. Absolutely phenomenal flavor! FRESH LEMON & LEMON ZEST LINGUINE 1 Pkg. Linguine 1/4 Cup of Minced Onion or Shallot 3 Cloves of Garlic; Crushed 3 Tbls. Butter; Melted 1 8-oz. Carton of Sour Cream 6 Thunder Roads Kentucky

2 Tbls. of Lemon-Pepper Seasoning Salt & Cracked Pepper to Taste 1 Whole Lemon; Zested - (medium size lemon) 1 Tbl. of Real Lemon Juice - (use same one zested) *be sure and slice lemon in half and squeeze with top part up, that way you don’t get any of the seeds. And remember when zesting to just barely hit the lemon on your rasper cause’ if you go down to the skin then it will be very bitter. 2 Tbls. of Freshly Chopped Parsley Leaves 2 Tbls. of Fresh Chopped Chives *If you use bottled it’s o.k. as long as new bottle and not old spices) Cook linguine according to package. Remember to salt your water generously that pasta cooks in. In a large skillet cook onion or shallots & garlic in butter, stirring continually until tender and translucent but not browned. Stir in sour cream, 2 Tbls. of the Parmesan, milk, lemon-pepper, salt & pepper, lemon juice & lemon zest. Cook for apprx. 2-3 minutes. Drain your pasta well and then add directly to skillet. Turn off heat and take tongs and toss your pasta gently but thuroughly, adding parsley and chives and remaining other 2 Tbls. of Parmesan. Serve warm with hot, crusty Italian bread and garlic butter. Yum! RED VELVET CAKE SANDWICHES w/ CREAM CHEESE OR BUTTER CREAM FROSTING 1 Box of Red Velvet Cake Mix; Prepare in bowl to package directions. *You can actually use any flavor of cake mix you prefer. Preheat oven. Take an X-Large cookie sheet and spray w/ coating. Next, take an ice-cream scoop and and scoop out same size dips of cake batter and gently drop onto cookie sheet. Make sure you space far emough apart so that when they cook & spread out they’re giant size, soft & puffy cookie sandwiches. Remove from oven & cool thuroughly. Gently take a spatula and life from sheet. Frost each inside w/ your favorite frosting and smoosh together to form a cake sandwich. The Red Velvet w/ Cream Cheese truly is spectacular just because of the bright red color!

Wildcat Harley Davidson

Birthday Celebration

On Saturday July 10, Wildcat Harley Davidson in London, Ky. turned one year old and celebrated with a huge open house, complete with a humongous fireworks display of 2600 ballistic shells choreographed to music. The Hasty Street Band, Medley Boys Band, and Wild River Band provided music as food vendors provided about any kind of food and drinks the thousand or more attendees could want. There was even a huge inflatable fun area for the many kids there with their parents. A camera malfunction caused me to miss pictures of the fireworks display but believe me it was awesome! So Happy Birthday Wildcat H-D, I hope birthday #2 is as enjoyable. You guys know how to throw a party! DIRTY ED TRM KY. 8 Thunder Roads Kentucky

A Difference of Opinion Toni,

A Note from the Owner of Thunder Roads Kentucky There was an article published in the August issue written by Toni Shearon about the Little Sturgis Rally which also expressed some opinions about the Shawneetown Rally and Hogdaddy’s Saloon in Illinois. The views expressed in this article are not the opinions of Thunder Roads Kentucky magazine or its staff. This was a completely biased article which I shouldn’t have allowed to be published in this magazine. The reason why is because I was at this event and didn’t feel that any of these opinions were just. One thing I have learned though is that a lot of people do read this magazine and it was never my intention to offend any of our readers or advertisers by publishing this article. But unfortunately people are entitled to have their opinion and not everyone may agree with it. I myself had a great time at Shawneetown and I enjoy attending this event every year along with several friends. Thank you, John Culbertson Owner/Editor of Thunder Roads Kentucky Magazine To the Readers: This letter is in response to the article I wrote in the August issue on the Lil’ Sturgis Rally that had negative overtones towards the Shawneetown Rally. I was given liberty to express my opinion, so it’s only fair that Marti be allowed to express hers’. Thanks for the insight, girl. toni @ Thunder Roads TN

I am writing regarding your article on Little Sturgis in the August 2010 issue, more pointedly the remarks you made in regard to the Shawneetown Street Rally. Let me begin by saying that I am a big fan of Shawneetown, as are MANY other people ! I and others who have read your article do not feel that you gave the afore mentioned Rally a fair shake. While I will agree that some sort of a system needs to be worked out for folks who only want to come in for one day, maybe a different colored arm band at $ 5.00 a piece or something along that line. However, $ 10.00 per person for the entire Rally is extremely reasonable! Had you bothered to experience the whole Rally by camping there for it’s entirety, you would have possibly had a different take on it. Firstly, many people who are there, are there because Little Sturgis is overpriced, and over crowded. As well as the fact that almost every year there is at worst a fatality, and at the least, at least one violent fight. At Shawneetown the State Police or Sheriff is readily available making many rounds through the downtown area and through the campsites. They are there and ever present in case needed, however they do not harass people just out to have a good time. I have never heard of anyone even being harassed for nudity, or public drinking, after all, it is a Bike Rally . As a for instance, there was an incident at last year’s Rally, where a large Club was going to make a “showing” over an incident the night before. The State Police showed up in force to keep the peace, but never bothered anyone who was there to have a good time, they just ensured everyone’s safety. Further, Hogdaddy’s may not have air, but no one seems to mind, as it’s such a good time, also there are other bars a couple of doors down, (with different activities and entertainment incidentally,) which do have air. Then on the main stage out on the street, there is always music or comedy going on as well. This Rally is a great place to meet new people either kicking back at your campsite, shopping at vendor’s booths, or checking out the various entertainment. I love to kick back at camp with a cool drink in hand and just watch the fun roll or stroll by, doing the bead thang, sharing an occasional beer with a new friend, welcoming old friends into the camp just to hang out. This is a very laid back Rally, and has a whole different feel than Little Sturgis. On the flip side, my Husband says he will never go back to Little Sturgis, because it is too expensive, too rough, too crowded etc. and he doesn’t want to expose me to that. If we want that type of party hard atmosphere, we go pay our money to “HogRock” very well organized, roomy, shady and most importantly very secure, as is Shawneetown. Definately more bang for the buck either way, depending upon the type of Rally one wants to attend. Tim York really knows how to put on an event, any way you slice it ! I feel that it is only responsible journalism to fully research a topic before you comment on it, which obviously you did not when it comes to Shawneetown Street Rally. In all fairness, you should print my letter in order to give your readers something to compare these Rallies and make a fair, educated decision as to the one they want to attend. Sincerely, Marti in Western Kentucky

Benefit Ride for Steven Calloway

On Saturday, July 24, approximately 30 bikes & riders from around the region braved the heat & humidity for one of their own. This event brought out bikers to raise money for Steven Calloway, a fellow biker that was killed in an accident in Muhlenberg County, Ky on June 26. During the incident, both Calloway and the driver of the truck attempted to stop, but inevitably collided head-on. The bikers met at Fred’s Discount Store in Hartford to prepare for the ride, which was sponsored by Kentucky Cruisers. Several Christian bike groups were on hand for the benefit, including the Ambassadors For Christ, from Hartford and Beaver Dam; Soldiers For Christ, from Beaver Dam and Soldiers of the Truth from Henderson. After the 50/50 drawing and a prayer for the Calloway Family and the safety of the riders, the group roared into the streets for a two hour ride, ending at the Ohio County Fairgrounds for a meal and fellowship. Barry Lindsey with the Kentucky Cruisers said the benefit raised over $900.00.  Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com www.thunderroadskentucky.com

A redneck was stopped by a game warden in middle Tennessee recently with two ice chests full of fish. He was leaving a secluded lake well known for its fishing. The Game Warden asked the man, ‘Do you have a license to catch those fish?’ ‘Naw, sir’, replied the redneck. ‘I ain’t got none of them there licenses. You gotta’ understand, these here are my pet fish.’ ‘Pet fish?’ ‘Yeah. Every night, I take these here fish down to the lake and let ‘em swim ‘round for a while. Then, when I whistle, they jump right back into these here ice chests and I take ‘em on home.’ ‘That’s a bunch of b.s.! Fish can’t do that.’ The redneck looked at the warden for a moment and then said, ‘It’s the truth Mr. Government Man. I’ll show ya, it truly works.’ ‘O.K.’, said the warden. This I’ve got to see!’ The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the warden says, ‘Well?’ ‘Well, what?,’ says the redneck. The warden says, ‘When are you going to whistle them back?’ ‘Whistle who back?’ ‘The FISH,’! yelled the warden! ‘What fish?,’ replied the redneck, “I thought we were just beholdin’ the beauty of the lake.” A Georgia preacher said to his congregation, “Someone in this congregation has spread a rumor that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. It is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian Family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you not have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven, and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again all was quiet. Then slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous redhead with a body that would stop traffic rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke. “Reverend, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were an absolute wizard under the sheets.” This one is for everyone who... a) has kids b) had kids c) was a kid d) knows a kid e) is going to have kids. I guess that means all of us!! 22 Thunder Roads Kentucky

I was packing for my business trip and my three year old daughter was having a wonderful time playing on the bed. At one point she said, ‘Daddy, look at this’ , and stuck out two of her fingers. Trying to keep her entertained, I reached out and stuck her tiny fingers in my mouth and said, “yum, yummy” ‘Daddy’s gonna eat your fingers,’ pretending to eat her pudgy littlle fingers. She squealed with delight, yelling, “no, Daddy, no, don’t eat my fingers”. I went back to packing, looked up again and my daughter was standing on the bed staring at her fingers with a devastated look on her face. I said, ‘What’s wrong, honey, you still have all your fingers, don’t you?’ She looked at me and simply asked...... ‘Yeah, but what happened to my booger?’ An elderly priest invited a young priest over for dinner. During the meal, the young priest couldn’t help noticing how attractive and shapely the housekeeper was. Over the course of the evening he started to wonder if there was more between the elderly priest and the housekeeper than met the eye. Reading the young priest’s thoughts, the elderly priest volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, my relationship with my housekeeper is purely professional.” About a week later the housekeeper came to the elderly priest and said, “Father, ever since the young father came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don’t suppose he took it, do you?” The priest said, “Well, I doubt it, but I’ll write him a letter just to be sure.” So he sat down and wrote: “Dear Father, I’m not saying that you ‘did’ take a gravy ladle from my house, and I’m not saying you ‘did not’ take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.” Several days later the elderly priest received a letter from the young priest which read: “Dear Father, I’m not saying that you ‘do’ sleep with your housekeeper, and I’m not saying that you ‘do not’ sleep with your housekeeper. But the fact remains that if you were sleeping in your own bed, you would have found the gravy ladle by now.”

I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a Cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same damn snake with two frogs in his mouth! Greenville Bike Nights Come to historic Greenville, KY on any Friday night and you will find, lots of people, good food, local bands and many beautiful bikes. Bikers and spectators begin arriving at Veterans Plaza at the Courthouse Square approximately 6pm and stay until 9pm. Friday Night Bike Nights are sponsored by the Greenville Fire Department. Fire Chief Jerry Aders has been very pleased with the support of the community on this weekly event. “Everyone is invited to come out to enjoy the evening, hang out with friends, listen to music and eat some good food,” Aders said. Local bands, including No Surrender and Mid-Life Krysis are just two of the bands that have performed at Veteran’s Plaza during the weekly event. Everyone receives a free ticket for a door prize and they can buy tickets for the 50/50 drawing or purchase a 2010 Bike Night T-shirt. Bikes park along the street in front of the courthouse while waiting for the judges to vote for the weekly “Favorite Bike”, giving a trophy to the runner up and a plaque to the first place winner. Chief Aders says the Friday Night Bike Nights are scheduled to run through Labor Day Weekend but may be extended if the weather permits. All proceeds from the weekly event goes to help the fire department maintain and purchase new equipment. Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com 28 Thunder Roads Kentucky

Bikers Ride For Their

“Partner”

On July 24, during some of the worst heat and humidity of the summer, approximately 30 bikers came together to ride for David “Partner” Mitchell. Mitchell had been involved in an accident earlier in the month. While returning home from the Elkton Bike Night, a group of bikers were riding along Hwy 181S when a deer ran out into the road. Another biker barely missed hitting the deer but Mitchell hit the deer and wrecked his bike. He was taken to Muhlenberg Community Hospital then life flighted to Vanderbilt. Mitchell suffered from 8 broken ribs, a broken collar bone and bleeding on the brain. The next week, Mitchell was able to return home but a few days later, was rushed back to MCH with a staph infection. Later in the week, doctors told him that he was in such bad shape, they gave him only a 20 percent chance to survive the day he came into the hospital. When friends gathered for the benefit, they were able to purchase buger and BBQ Sandwich Plates, drinks and other snacks. There was also a silent auction which included stereo speakers, purses, craft items and Mitchell’s HarleyDavidson leather jacket he had recently purchased. No one bid on the jacket and it was returned to him. At 4:00, the bikers headed out for a ride through the southern end of the county, stopping in Rosewood for a quick break and drawings for door prizes. The group then headed to the hospital, where Mitchell was still a patient at the time. Mitchell was waiting at the front door to see his friends pull into the parking lot. He thanked everyone for what the support they had given him, saying he would have done the same thing for them. Mitchell also said, “The third time is the charm, this wreck almost killed me. I’m done riding.” Mitchell has not yet been able to return to work and is still home recuperating. Article/Photos by Leigh Douglas www.photosbyleigh.com

Hillbilly Christmas in July Since 2006, the good ol’ boys at Pikeville Harley Davidson have sponsored a “Hillbilly Christmas in July” to help the kids at Shriners Hospital in Lexington. In just four years a combined total of $344,589.00 cash and toys has been donated by this event. Starting in 2007, and ever year after, a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic has been raffled and this years winner was Kevin R. Bayes from Paintsville. This years event started early in the year with a car show in downtown Pikeville on May 29th, followed by an all night pig roast on June 18th, and ‘Motorcycles on Main Street’ June 19th. Then Saturday July 17th a full day of events took place at Pikeville Harley Davidson. There were games, a silent auction, prizes, and entertainment. The kids were treated to a day in the park, followed by a motorcycle parade to the park at 7:00pm. At 8:00pm, the Garland Rogers band was scheduled to play but 8 inches of rain, mudslides, thunder and lightning dampened the activities, but not the spirits of the dedicated attendees. At 10:00am the next day the huge pack of motorcycles left

from Pikeville on a poker run to Man O’ War H-D in Lexington. At Man O War, a local favorite, Sammy Marsee and the Trailer Trash Band performed some great music all afternoon. At 3:00pm the bikers once again mounted there motorcycles and followed a Lexington Police Department Motorcycle Force led procession to Shriners Hospital and back to Man O’ War for the motorcycle, poker run, and 50/50 raffle winners names to be announced. In all it was a great day with 100% of the proceeds going to some deserving children. But on a sad note, the ride was also a memorial ride for one of the ride co-founders, Randy “The Voice” Jones, who passed away on Fathers Day. Randy and his contributions to this event will be missed for years to come by all who knew him and a lot who didn’t. Thanks Randy for all you have done in these few years for these children. Rest in Peace, you may be gone but you will not be forgotten. DIRTY ED TRM KY.

Man O’ War H-D Road Rumble On Sunday July 11, the Ohio Valley Wrestling Association brought a rumble to the parking lot at Man O’ War Harley Davidson in Lexington, Ky. Local rock station Z103 was on hand with tickets to the WWE Wrestling Event on Monday night at Rupp Arena and for UK basketball fans, the Coach Calipari Roush Racing limited edition Mustang was on display. Former WWE Superstar Eugene was on hand from 11:00am until 1:00pm for a “Meet and Greet” with his many fans, then at 2:00 pm the wrestlers took the ring. Four women wrestlers competed in a tug of war where they drug a male wrestler threw a tub of water, then the four competed in a bikini contest. After four bouts of pretty good wrestling, the main event between former WWE Superstar “Iron Man Rob Conway” and the bad guy “Low Rider” with his police body guard squared off. The two were no match for Iron Man as he threw them both out of the ring, then chased them down and threw them back in the ring for a good old fashion ‘ass whoopin’ to take the win. In all, it was a pretty good day of fun with wrestlers, pretty women, fast cars and motorcycles, lots of sunshine, and the good folks at Man O’ War Harley Davidson. Hope to see you there next time.
