HELLO BIKERS! The weather is turning and we’ve already been out for some totally decent rides. I LOVE SPRING! What’s not to love?.......gorgeous fresh flowers, gorgeous 4-leaf clover fields for as far as the eye can see and the smells, OMG! The smells that come with Spring with everyone grilling out and Que on the spit, good old Cinnamon Apple Pie Shine and baby…..life just don’t get any better than Spring time in Tennessee. April is my birthday month, as I tell you every year, so I am always very, very particular of the contents, Cover and graphics that go into the magazine. I happen to think this particular issue is one of our all-time best. I also want to say HEY! POPS…..Thank You for sending me my very 1st birthday card. Ole’ Pops and I met through him writing me when he was incarcerated and he’s hanging on by a thread with all the cancer surgeries he’s had but he’s one tough ole’ Scooter-Head and always remembers us and the Thunder Roads Zoo Crew. Thanks, Pops. You’re a good ole’ biker and I’m proud to call you Friend. I have been having IBS symptoms since Christmas and went for my colonoscopy today and Doc said I had the cleanest poop-shoot he’s ever seen and I said, “it outa’ be, I aint had a shit in 3 months”. Hahaha But he laughed and said everything showed up perfectly clear so Amen and thank you Universe and God for that. I’ve been back on schedule for the past 2 weeks; it’s just that I had gotten away from eating all the fresh fruits and vegetables I always ate before the Flood, and that’s not good for your regularity…..ya’ know what I mean? So, I’m back to my healthy diet but still a meat eater and a gun totin’ redneck biker bitch so it’s good to feel like me again. I am SOOOOOOOO ready to get out and about and go to Bumpus’ Bike Show and Appleton’s Open House, and Smoky Mountain Thunder Run and see my four-legged, goggle wearing #1 most known and beloved Beagle next to Snoopy…….MAGOO! I’ll be seein’ you soon buddy and you can catch me up on all the gossip like you did at Ocean City Bikefest in Maryland in October of last year. Magoo Rocks! Carol Simpson and Rhonda Williams or CMT/Abate have some very important news regarding the Lobby Meeting that was held yesterday; March 19th. So, you should go on their website or give Carol a call or e her or Rhonda and get all the most up to the date current happenings. Apparently, we came VERY close yesterday, but no banana yet. We’ll get there though…..we just need to stand together as one. Solidarity; as always. Helmets should be a CHOICE! Enjoy the weather and we’ll see you out and about somewhere. We’re going to be out there all over this Season. We’ll see you at HD Cool Springs April 6th for Pet Adoption Day. Come out for REAL unconditional love. Love ya’ bikers. toni & brian

CLARKSVILLE, TN’S HEATH CALHOUN
AN AMERICAN HERO AND HIS PATH TO FREEDOM Heath Calhoun of Clarksville, TN and the 101st Airborne Division finds his freedom through his Harley-Davidson and as a Paralympics skier after his injury in Iraq of 2003. It is with great American pride, and more importantly Clarksville pride, to announce that one of our local Fort Campbell soldiers has been globally recognized through Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson’s states,” The story of Heath Calhoun is a story that provides a lesson in heroism we can all learn from.”
“To be free from the stresses and the strains of this world is something that you can’t get very often. When I am skiing and when I’m riding it gives me the opportunity to forget my pressure and forget my stress and just enjoy.” said Heath Calhoun. The Harley-Davidson freedom jacket is a leather motorcycle coat that is traveling the world in 2013 as Harley-Davidson celebrates their 110th anniversary. Heath Calhoun is the 6th stop on this jacket’s journey to show what Harley-Davidson means to people around the globe and how the brand brings communities and people together.
Calhoun was raised in West Virginia, joined the military at 19 and was stationed at Fort Campbell in Tennessee. In Iraq of 2003, his vehicle was hit killing one solider that he was with and causing him to lose both legs above the knee. Calhoun started skiing and had the opportunity to compete in the 2012 Paralympics.
4
Calhoun is now located in Clarksville, TN. When he is not with his kids, or out riding, he works at Appleton HarleyDavidson in Clarksville. Although he stays busy, he always finds time to ride his Harley-Davidson. For more pics, video, and additional story on Heath, visit 110.harley-davidson.com, Freedom Jacket Tab, and click the 2012 DEC link.

BEFORE
A Soldier’s Surprise!! I
By: Rebel Ron
have a very cool story to share with y’all this month. It is a story about what makes the biker lifestyle so damn cool. And that is helping make a two wheeling brother’s dream come true.
Met a longtime riding buddy of mine around Christmas at Willie’s Wet Spot in Smyrna. He, Jim Jordan, was needing a part for his oldShovelhead that we had in stock at S & G Custom Cycles & I was wanting free beer for bringing it to him. Soon he told me of a guy named Tommy Olmstead who was secretly restoring a 1980 Lowrider for his son who is deployed over in Afghanistan. Tommy works at Toyota then comes home to build hot rods & restore old cars. You’ll have to excuse his rather wild looking hair as he does not cut his hair until his son returns from his deployment much to his boss’ displeasure. He also told me of a “biker family circle” that he & many friends have long enjoyed in the area. This is what this “family” has done. Mark Aires was a member of this “family” & he owned a cool HarleyLowrider he bought new in 1980. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1999 & they did not want the bike to leave the family so Tommy bought it & rode it until four years ago. Tommy now rides a 2006 Harley Softail with a California Side Car Co. trike kit. (His friends call it a “HarleyHoveround.) Tommy’s 34 year old son is Seth M. Olmstead who is a Major with the 101st CAB (Combat Aviation Brigade) based in Clarksville. Seth has wanted to be a soldier since a little boy & has done exactly that since high school. It’s no wonder he feels like such a patriotic American, he was born on the 4th of July for God’s sake!!!!! 6
Seth loves to kick start the old Shovelhead bike & rides it often when home. He is about to complete his fourth tour of duty overseas. And boy do we have a surprise for him! Before Seth deployed back in 2012 he noticed the old Harley was leaking gas from a crack in the tank. Tommy & his buddy Rick Waldren drove toClarksville to get the bike, fix the tank issue, & return it. (Technically I think you can consider that they stole the bike as it has been over a year & it is still not in Clarksville.) When the Murfreesboro area “family” learned that they were working on one of our Defenders of Freedom’s Harley they all wanted to help. So the tank repair turned into a complete frame up rebuild!!!! Many people pitched in for this worthy project. Space does not allow me to mention all they wanted to thank but

Rick wanted to give a shout out to David Taylor for his technical assistance time after time. The bike looks great & we all know nothing sounds better than a fresh built well tuned Shovelhead anyway. What this “family” has accomplished is fantastic on many levels. And is a great example of goodol’ fashion brotherhood where people get things done for someone special for whatever reason & no one cares who gets credit or blame for anything. I asked them how long it took for them to rebuild the bike? The answer I got was at least 17 cases of beer! Soon Maj. Olmstead will return to his loving family in Clarksville where his wife of two years & long ago school pal Kathy, along with their boy, will surprise the homesick soldier with a like new now white 1980 Harley. Kathy wanted to say this about Seth & the “family“. “We are very proud of you and the work you are doing. You are an admirable man and you have a huge heart. I’m thankful for such great family and friends that have worked so hard to make this the best homecoming ever! Much thanks and appreciation to those that helped restore the bike and salute our military and the fine work they do. We love all of you.” And I hope that we surprise him further when he discovers that he is in Tennessee’s most popular bike magazine the month he returns to the Volunteer State. Thanks for you service to our country Major Olmstead! Hope you get plenty of fun safe riding time on the old Lowrider. This will be a great machine with a fantastic story for you to pass on to your boy one day. April 2013

TOASTED BACON & EGGS OVER EASY “SAMICH” 7 Strips of Hickory Smoked Bacon 2 Slices of Potato Bread; lightly toasted 2 Eggs; Cooked Over-Easy in bacon drippings 1 Slice of White American Cheese (*optional) Good slather of real mayo; not cheap stuff. Substitute Miracle Whip if that’s your preference. Lightly toast your potato bread, spread a thin amount of mayo on bottom piece of toast, then lay your bacon strips down vertically and if too long, just break off extra and place in middle of “samich”, next, add your over-easy eggs on top of bacon and poke them so the yolks break and all that creamy yolk is released. Add your cheese on top of eggs. Sprinkle a bit of parsley over entire “samich”, spread a good amount of mayo on top piece of toast and yum-yum it up. This is one of my top 4 “samiches” and I’ve been making it for myself since I was 6 years old (but back then used Wonder bread); Potato bread is so much thicker and really toasts up crunchy for texture. GOOD OLE’ HOME-MADE REUBEN “SAMICH” 2 Slices of Marbled Rye Bread 1 1/4 lb. of Deli Pastrami; sliced thin 1 1/4 lb. of Deli Corn Beef; sliced thin 1 Tbls. of Spicy Deli Mustard 2 Slices of Quality Swiss Cheese 1 Good Slather of Quality Thousand Island Dressing Get a cast iron skillet good and hot on medium heat. Use “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” margarine and spread both pieces of your Marble Rye bread generously and get up into the corners too. Take one piece in your hand and with fingers spread wide, hold bread with butter side down but on the top part spread Thousand Island dressing generously. While holding the bread, pile a good amount of pastrami on bread, then cover with a piece of Swiss Cheese then pile a good amount of Corn Beef on top of cheese, the 2nd piece of Swiss Cheese on top of that and then a really hefty slather of Thousand Island dressing all over top. Place top on sandwich and butter the top of generously and also throw a good size pat of margarine in the pan to melt down. When bottom of pan is well coated; gently glide your sandwich off your fingers and into skillet. Do not touch it or move it! It will only take apprx. 2 minutes to brown up crunchy, take a spatula and lift to make sure good and brown. Flip it and brown the other side. Serve up with a big long pickle spear and some chips. This also is one of my top 4 “samiches”. 8
HOME-MADE PHILLY-STYLE STEAK & CHEESE I rarely make these at home as they’re quite costly my way as my home-made version is made with Filet Mignon. So, we standardly go to Jersey Mike’s. 2 Hoagie Style Rolls; fresh from Deli 2 Filet Mignon Steaks 1 & 1/2 Cups of Shredded Parmesan Cheese (or any cheese of your preference. It’s your “samich”. 1 Ripe, Homegrown Tomato 2 Handfuls of Shredded Lettuce 1 Vidalia Onion; chopped and saute’ 1 Red, Green or Yellow Pepper, chopped & saute’ Or......all 3….go for it! Throw in some sliced mushrooms also Grill your steaks. Those stovetop grill skillets are great for this. Or use your indoor grill machine, whichever you prefer. Let cool 10 minutes when done cooking for juices to draw back into meat. Meanwhile, slather margarine on both sides of both Hoagie rolls. Cover them up well. Place under broiler and really keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. Next, in your pre-heated medium high skillet, add your peppers, onions and mushrooms to saute’ up well. Salt & pepper to taste. Cut your Filet Mignon up into thin strips, but then chop the meat to a rough chop. After your saute’ mixture is smelling phenomenal, put in your steak chunks and add a few splashes of Worcestershire Sauce and mix well. Now, add your cheese and let it melt all down into skillet mixture. Cut down the center and take a spatula and take mixture over to crunchy, broiled buns. Arrange it where entire bottom of bun is covered up with the veggies and meat and melted cheese. Spread your shredded lettuce over top, then lay down 3 slices of rich, red, homegrown tomatoes on top of lettuce and salt & pepper them (add garlic powder also if want), slather top generously with mayo or your fave topping and bite baby bite. This is Heaven on a Hoagie roll. PEANUT BUTTER & MARSHMALLOW “SAMICH” 2 Slices of soft Wonder Bread or Blue Bunny Bread Bottom slice, generously spread with JIFF peanut butter. On top of the Jiff, spread really generously with Marshmallow Creme. Place the top over the bottom and seriously, you have to eat this with an ice-cold glass of whole milk. It is my comfort food “samich” of all times and I started making these for myself when I was 3 years old. And the best part.....totally simple. So there ya’ go; my 4 favorite “samiches” thruout my whole life. What’s yours? E-mail me your recipe. Keep Your Face In The Sweet Pie Of Life!

NEWS BYTES
NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) LEGISLATION WOULD PROHIBIT E15 GAS PENDING FURTHER INVESTIGATION Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced H.R. 875, which would require the Environmental Protection Agency to stop the use of gasoline containing 15% ethanol (E15) until its harmful effects are investigated further. H.R. 875, introduced on February 28, would repeal the EPA’s waiver decision approving the use of E15 and the authority of the agency to grant further decisions until the EPA seeks an independent scientific analysis of the effects of the E15 blend.
“There have been several tests and warnings highlighting E15’s harmful effects on engines and their components, but they have all been dismissed by the EPA. Therefore, we must force the EPA to stop the use of E15 fuel until the serious safety, durability, performance and environmental concerns have been addressed,” announced Rep. Sensenbrenner. Sensenbrenner has introduced several bills to address the risks associated with E15, and his latest legislation to halt the sale of the 15% alcohol blended fuel until further studies are completed, came less than a week after witnesses from automobile and motorcycle industry and consumer groups testified before the Science, Space and Technology Committee that more testing is needed. “We have a responsibility to ensure that Americans using gaspowered machinery – whether it be cars and boats or chainsaws and lawnmowers – are not put at risk due to faulty fuel that has not been adequately vetted,” Sensenbrenner said. BILL INTRODUCED IN CALIFORNIA TO REGULATE LANE SHARING No sooner had the California Highway Patrol published guidelines on how to safely maneuver your motorcycle between lanes of slow-moving traffic, than SB 350 was introduced by State Senator Jim Beall (D-San Jose) to codify the rules into law. California is the only state that allows “lane sharing” or “lane splitting,” precisely because there are no laws against it; though officers have a variety of charges they can levy against a reckless rider such as unsafe lane change or too fast for conditions. Beall’s bill would restrict the practice by prohibiting motorcycles from splitting lanes unless specifically allowed; “…when a highway has been divided into three or more clearly marked lanes for traffic traveling in the same direction, a person operating a motorcycle shall not pass another vehicle in a portion of a lane occupied by that vehicle unless the following conditions are met: (1) The passing occurs during traffic congestion. (2) The passing occurs at a safe speed.” Following furious feedback from motorcyclists opposed to overregulating an act that 87% report doing almost daily during crowded commutes, Sen. Beall soon pulled his proposal and turned it into a twoyear bill for future reconsideration. In the meantime, although ABATE of California did not initiate the measure, the group will work with Beall to amend the language, and vows “…our goal is to ultimately submit a bill that addresses the concerns of the motorcycle community; a bill that can be supported and endorsed by the ABATE membership. If the final bill doesn’t meet ABATE’s requirements, ABATE will vigorously oppose the bill and try to kill it.” DRIVERS CAUSE MOST CRASHES WITH MOTORCYCLES, RESEARCH SHOWS For motorcycle riders, people in “cages” bear a disproportionate share of the blame for the high number of motorcycle crashes, while car drivers feel careless motorcyclists careening in and out of traffic are putting their own lives at risk. 14
So who’s mostly to blame when four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles collide? According to a recent Florida Department of Transportation study, bikers are right. Motorists driving cars and trucks are mostly at fault, often failing to yield the right of way to the smaller vehicles. In analyzing 10 years of Florida motorcycle crashes, Chanyoung Lee, a senior researcher at the University of South Florida ‘s Center for Urban Transportation Research, found that 60% of the time motorists in other vehicles are at fault when they collide with motorcycles. But the study uncovered more: When looking at all motorcycle crashes, motorcycle operators bear a lot of responsibility as well. They have a significantly higher number of single-vehicle crashes than other drivers. Some 34% of motorcycle crashes involve one vehicle, according to the study, compared to only 19% of car crashes involving one vehicle. When looking at really severe and fatal motorcycle crashes, 50% involve just the motorcycle and no other vehicle, but when multiple vehicles are involved, greater blame falls on four-wheeled drivers. And most motorcycle crashes involve other vehicles. But it’s also a matter of awareness, according to Lee, who is part of FDOT’s Motorcycle Safety Coalition. In driver surveys, FDOT has asked people how often they see motorcycles. Those with motorcycle endorsements on their driver’s licenses report seeing motorcycles all the time, while those without endorsements who live in the same area report occasionally seeing motorcycles. Due to minimal levels of protection to their riders, approximately 80% of motorcycle crashes result in injury or fatality, according to the Network of Employees for Traffic Safety, while only 20% of passenger car crashes injure or kill the vehicle occupants. MMA HELPS DEFEAT SOUND WARRANT IN YARMOUTH , MA The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) is pleased to report that a town bylaw proposal has been successfully defeated in Yarmouth . With short notice, the MMA in concert with the Yarmouth Chief-of-Police and Deputy Chief attended a recent Board-of-Selectmen meeting and were successful in convincing the board that such a Bylaw would be unsuccessful. Armed with prior testimony used successfully around the state, including used to overturn a similar bylaw passed in Falmouth and subsequently struck down by the Commonwealth Attorney General, MMA Legislative Director Rick Gleason joined the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Yarmouth Police Department in their argument that Town Bylaws cannot exceed State Law, and that such a measure would essentially be meaningless. The MMA has long held strong opposition to the use of the OEM EPA Stamp on stock exhausts as an enforcement tool, because it is a consumer protection mechanism and not meant to be used against the consumer. It is also hard to locate on many models of motorcycle, hidden under seats on sport bikes, under saddle bags of cruisers, or simply facing the wrong way for aesthetic reasons. Most critically, per the very regulation that entitles it, it expires in one year or 3,729 miles, whichever comes first!! Instead, the MMA (www.MassMotorcycle.org) continues to hold a firm belief that the existing laws on the books are sufficient if properly implemented and enforced, specifically that simple test procedures do exist for muffled exhaust, whether replaced with after-market or not, with a reasonable sound level. LICENSE PLATE CAMERAS - A NEW WAY TO NAB SCOFFLAWS First came red light cameras attached to traffic lights to catch drivers trying to beat the light; then came speed cameras along the roadway to ticket lead-footed speeders; but now police are deploying cameras in their cruisers to scan our license-plates in order to get instant feedback on unpaid tickets and other warrants. It also allows authorities to monitor where average citizens might be at any particular time. That bothers some privacy advocates and organizations like the ACLU that oppose public intrusions into individual privacy. The groups are becoming more alarmed about license plate tracking as a growing number of police departments acquire the technology for

Little Rock, AR Police Chief Stuart Thomas said the law enforcement benefits outweigh any concerns about possible abuse of the information, which, as a public record, is legally available for anyone to see. Lawmakers in several states, including Minnesota and Utah , have suggested setting a time limit for their departments regarding how long such data can be collected and stored, but many places like Little Rock have no set policy and have a growing archive of license plate photos, along with time stamps and the locations, showing where motorists were at certain times. Privacy advocates worry about the potential uses for such outside law enforcement, from snooping by stalkers and private investigators to businesses that sell personal data. “Given how few rules are currently on the books to protect our privacy, it’s plausible that private investigators and data-mining companies could acquire this location data,” said ACLU staff attorney Catherine Crump, adding that the organization has requested more information from government agencies, but hasn’t filed any lawsuits. AUSTRALIA BANS BROTHERS BEHIND BARS Since last Nov 19, the Australian State of Queensland in Northeastern Australia has banned the distribution of the monthly newsletter “Brothers Behind Bars” in its prisons. Brothers Behind Bars is a digest of biker club and motorcycle news edited by retired Sons of Silence patch holder Iron Mike Davis, and is an outreach program supported by the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). BBB is specifically aimed at motorcycle club members and is stubbornly non-partisan. Mike Davis was notified that the words he publishes were illegal in Oz with a peremptory, unsigned form letter from the government of Queensland that read in full: “On 7th of November 2012 Queensland Corrective Services issued a directive from head office that all correspondence between prisoners who are members of an Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMCG) & OMCG members & associates was to cease immediately. As a result the author of this letter has been identified to be either a member or associate of an OMCG as such your mail has been returned to you.” Iron Mike recently told The Aging Rebel (www.agingrebel.com), “Something I’ve said for years: ‘ Australia today, Canada tomorrow, and the U.S.A. the day after.’ I truly believe countries like Canada , Germany , U.S.A. , and others are watching to see what works in Australia to outlaw motorcycle clubs – starting with the 1%er ones.” The Aging Rebel article went on to describe “Anti-Bikie Laws” down under: “ Queensland has been trying to outlaw motorcycle clubs since 2009 when the state passed legislation formally called the Criminal

Organisation Act of 2009. These anti-bikie laws give police the power to declare which organizations are criminal & which are not. Similar sets of laws have been passed in the Australian states of New South Wales & South Australia, and have been challenged in the courts by the Hells Angels, Finks & Rebels MCs. Australia’s strategy has been difficult to implement in the United States because the U.S. Constitution specifically guarantees citizens’ & visitors’ rights to move freely, assemble peaceably, to keep & bear arms & to express themselves freely in numerous ways including the right to wear a patch on your back. Various Fed police forces in America including the FBI, the ATF & increasingly the Dept of Homeland Security have attempted to subvert these Constitutional guarantees using the Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) & in several recent cases trademark law.” CANADIAN RIDERS BALK AT HEFTY INSURANCE HIKES Premier Brad Wall says “maybe mistakes were made” and the Saskatchewan government will revisit motorcycle insurance rate hikes proposed recently by Saskatchewan Government Insurance. “Our MLAs are reporting a lot of feedback on the issue, not just from those who are riders or have motorcycles, but others in general who note that these increases seem to be very high,” Wall told reporters. When the legislature reconvenes for its spring session next week, the Saskatchewan Party caucus will discuss its next steps, Wall said. He said he’s not convinced SGI has exhausted all of its options to help eliminate a $9-million deficit between crash injury payouts and fees charged to motorcyclists. “Obviously, what’s being proposed by SGI for the rate rebalancing means huge increases and immediate increases, if approved, for riders,” Wall said. SGI’s proposal to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel would mean a sudden 73% jump in insurance costs for the average motorcycle owner, compared to an overall vehicle insurance rate increase of 1.03%. The move prompted a backlash from bike enthusiasts and business owners, who fear a big blow to new and used bike sales which could devastate the motorcycle industry. If approved, the rate increases would take effect in August, but Wall said the chance is “slim” the proposal will stay as is. He wants the government and SGI to look at other creative options, such as using better price incentives to reward motorcyclists who have taken training courses. 2012 TRIUMPH THUNDERBIRD STROM - THE PARALLEL ALTERNATIVE
Triumph Strom by the numbers Engine: Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 1699cc Parallel Twin Fueling: Multipoint sequential EFI Exhaust: Chromed stainless steel 2-1-2 Final Drive: Belt

he universe of cruiser and custom motorcycles is dominated by one engine design, the in-line V-Twin. It’s a simple design, that’s why since Indian introduced the V configuration in 1903 it has been a popular choice. But the V itself while being simple to build and well suited to motorcycle use because of its narrow profile, does have a flaw. It requires a longer motorcycle frame to accommodate the two cylinders. Because it has become the ubiquitous engine choice for so many different bikes it also forces a bit of cookie cutter sameness on the manufacturers. If a rider is looking for something unique, there is an excellent alternative, the Triumph parallel twin. Edward Turner’s 1937 Triumph Speed Twin may not have been the first parallel twin but his 500cc motor in a lightweight frame changed motorcycle design and by the late 1940s there were dozens of brands being built around his design. Even American manufacturer Indian made a couple of versions. The design in addition to allowing for a more compact bike, provided production cost advantages over the V that needed two separate cylinders and performance advantages through better cooling. Fast-forward 75 years to the modern Triumph and the newest application of Ed Turner’s enduring design, the 2012 Triumph Thunderbird Strom. At first glance the Strom looks more compact than most bikes in its class. It is in fact only an inch shorter than the average wheelbase for large displacement cruisers [64” vs 65”] and has a couple of degrees less rake than similar V-twins. But these small differences along with ergonomics that place the rider slightly more forward on the bike than a V Twin motor would allow, give the bike a feeling that while it is a big motorcycle it is not intimidatingly large or long. You don’t feel like you must stretch out to reach the forward mounted controls and flat straight drag bars. A low 27 inch seat height and a tank that narrows nicely at the rear all add to the comfortable, compact and rider friendly feeling of the Strom. April 2013
The Strom is the higher performance version of the basic Thunderbird. The 1700 kit was originally designed as a dealer installed upgrade for the 1600cc Twin in the standard T-Bird. A larger bore cylinder, new pistons, cams and gaskets give the Storm 97 horsepower and a comfortable 115 foot pound of torque. The big bore kit gives it more plenty of power even at low rpms and delivery is smooth throughout its powerband. A 270-degree crank gives the motor a V-Twin feel without a bunch of shaking and vibrations. All that smooth power does no good if you can’t get it to the rear wheel. The Triumph’s wide ratio 6-speed gearbox is one of the best I have ever experienced in the cruiser class and the linkage for the forward control is tight and precise. The T-bird’s transmission is quite and doesn’t have the heavy clunking of many cruisers especially when dropping into first gear. While I am not generally a fan of this riding position, the quality and comfort of the Triumph experience might change my mind. At 750 pounds this is not a lightweight motorcycle but the Showa suspension, rigid frame and good ground clearance plus it’s Metzeler Marathon rubber work well together to allow a more spirited riding style without wobbles or constant scrapping of pegs and metal bits. The Thunderbird’s low center of gravity gives it a stable feel even when it’s leaned over and ridden aggressively. It goes fast, it handles well but how does the big T-bird stop? With twin 310mm discs and Nissin four-piston calipers up front and a rear 310mm disc and Brembo two-piston calipers at the rear the ABS-equipped Triumph has great brakes with almost a sportbike feel to them. I had an opportunity to test the ABS in a real world hazard avoidance situation and I was very impressed with the way this big bike stops. It still amazes me that companies put 700 and 800 pound motorcycles on the road with single discs anchoring the front where all your stopping power is. I give this bike’s brakes a 9 on a 1 to 10 scale. I might give it a little smaller rear brake but that’s a matter of my personal preference. ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

The fit and finish of the Triumph Thunderbird Strom is top notch. I rode the flat grey version; with its mostly blacked out motor and minimal shiny stuff. Everywhere I took the bike it attracted a lots of admirers. It’s not a flashy bike, it’s a bit understated really and I liked that. The twin headlights give the T-bird an aggressive look, a street fighter power cruiser. Triumph’s designers also did a very good job of disguising its radiator. It is small, narrow and barely noticed. The only negative comment I had came from my test passenger concerning the small pillion seat the bike offers riding companions. It’s narrow and hard, ok for a few miles but a 250-mile test ride became uncomfortable after a hour on the seat, but that’s an easy fix. Overall, The Strom is a powerful, sweet handling and very competent cruiser. It has strong advantages over many of its more established competitors. If you are looking for a large cruiser with a great motor and transmission you should consider this Triumph, it’s the Parallel Alternative. by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: I’m sure some of you remember the story last year about former Marine Jon Hammar Jr. who was arrested August 13, 2012 after attempting to declare an antique shotgun and enter Mexico. He was later released in December last year just before Christmas after a large public outcry. Hammar was beaten and threatened with death by some of Mexico’s most hardened drug gang members. He was very lucky to survive and be returned to U.S. soil. There is another former Marine who is being held captive but he is being held by Iran, not Mexico. Amir Hekmati was born in Arizona but grew up in Michigan, where his parents and sister live today. Hekmati made all the appropriate arrangements to travel to Iran to visit his grandmother and other relatives and made it known he was a former American service member before going. He was arrested and charged with being a spy. Hekmati later confessed to working for the CIA but it is believed his confession was made to protect the lives of his family members who live in Iran. He has been held in Iran since 2011 and in a few months will have been a prisoner of Iran for two years. It was the loud voice of the public that brought home Jon Hammar Jr. and it will take your voice to bring Amir Hekmati home. He served our country honorably in combat as a front line interpreter but now has become a pawn in Iran’s game to become a nuclear power. Just as Stalin held thousands of Americans at the end of WWII to insure the allies would not invade Russia, almost every country that wants something from the United States takes hostages to gain leverage. I want to wish Bowe Bergdahl a happy birthday! His birthday was March 28 marking another
20
year older as a prisoner of the Haqqani network in Pakistan. If we can track down Osama Bin Laden surely we can bring Bowe Bergdahl home to his family. All American’s need to remember Bowe and raise the voice of the people to insure our government doesn’t leave him behind when our troops are pulled out of Afghanistan. Bowe’s parents, Robert and Jani, will speak at the Honor Release Return Freedom March in Washington DC on April 9, 2013. This event will be a great opportunity to give them encouragement and support. The march concludes with a plea for the government to gain the return of those held in Vietnam, Laos, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, China, North Korea and anywhere else American service members have been held and not come home. April also brings a Vietnam Veteran Welcome home to Tennessee. The event will be held in Pigeon Forge from April 15 – 17, 2013. Pigeon Forge is rolling out the red carpet with a veteran parade and several events and special offers. You can get more information at www.welcomehomevietnam. com or call 304-485-8687 to take advantage of their special packages. For those of us who served in Vietnam, we came home at a time when the country was in turmoil and many in this country placed the blame for the Vietnam War on the service members who went to war. When we came home we received harsh treatment. There weren’t any big welcome home celebrations or activities like you see today for those fighting the war on terror. Finally it’s okay to be a Vietnam Veteran and say so in public. Those who come home today can thank many Vietnam Veterans who helped insure they received better treatment. To all, “Welcome Home Brother.” Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog

“Pain & Purpose”
Did you know that you have a choice, “to live on purpose or live in your purpose?” Most of us just “live on purpose” but God has a “purpose” for your life, a God given direction but you have to choose it for yourself. When God’s “Eternal purpose” collides with your intellect, someone had better call 911. Your pain can push you into your eternal purpose. Have you ever heard “the best lesson is a bought lesson?” We should learn from our mistakes, some do-some never do. God can take what the devil meant to kill you with and use it for your good! Ruth 1: 1-22 we read about Naomi’s past pains and how God used them to push Naomi into her “Eternal Purpose.” Let’s take a look at Naomi’s tragedies and mistakes; 1. Naomi’s entire family had to leave their homeland because of a famine, moving into a foreign country where her two sons married women from that country. 2. Her husband dies 3. Now her two sons die as well So now Naomi decides to go back to her homeland having lost her husband and two sons and her means of making a living, she lost it all. Sometime we like to live in the past because the present is so painful; at one time Naomi was a beautiful young woman, a wife, a lover, a friend, and a mother. She returns home a defeated person, broke, busted, and disgusted. Don’t let “past seasons” in your life define who you are and dictate your future. Naomi fails to see the real blessing in her life, Ruth: “where you go, I will go, where you live. I will live. Your people will be my people. 26
Your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die.” When Naomi does return home she asked her friends not to call her Naomi (my joy) anymore but to call her Mara (my bitterness). God did not cause the famine in her homeland, God did not kill her husband, and God did not kill her two sons. God can’t give you something He does not have, There is no death in God, there is no disease in God, no car wrecks, if you have to place blame on someone, blame the devil, “the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy.” But if you will focus on God, He will use the “Pain” to guide you into your “Eternal Purpose.” Naomi now has the greatest opportunity of her life, to be a “Spiritual Mentor” to Ruth because the King of Kings would be coming through Ruth’s bloodline. You will never know that God is a healer unless you’ve been sick, never know that God is a deliverer unless you’ve been a captive; never know the Glory of God unless you have been in trouble. You must stop making you current decisions out of your past tragedies, pains and mistakes that will only lead you into a frustrating future. When I started out in ministry through a main stream denomination, they rejected me because I didn’t look like them, didn’t act like them, and didn’t talk like them. I thank God now for their rejection, if not for their rejection, I would probably still be connected to them and not be where I am today, ministering to bikers all over the country. “Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

A Talk with David Uhl
And A Look at His Amazing Work 28

hen I first got to the Timonium Bike Show, I did what every self-respecting biker does I went looking for bikes and babes. I don’t really remember seeing David Uhl’s large booth right there in the middle of it all. I passed by a couple of times and never really paid much attention to it. I’ve always stayed away from most art things, because to be honest I am the worst artist of all time. I’m sure you all know someone like me, the guy that can’t even draw stick people. I guess I’ve always been jealous of people that could draw or paint so effortlessly. I didn’t realize just how jealous I was about to be. On one of my trips around the show I looked into his booth and the next thing I knew I was standing in front of one of the pictures. I couldn’t believe how great these paintings were. The more I looked around I really liked what I was seeing, and it didn’t take long to see that I wasn’t the only one. The booth was full of bikers young and old, male and female. The paintings were just amazing. I knew I had to talk to David Uhl if I could get the chance. As I watched him finishing a new painting, I decided to asked if he would mind talking with me and sharing his story with Thunder Roads Magazine MDDE-DC. He accepted the offer, and after talking with him I gained a great respect for him and had to share his works with our readers. David started painting motorcycles in 1998. Before that he was an international illustrator. He did ball point pen drawings as a style that became really popular. He did everything from Apple computers, IBM, Newsweek, and Time. He also did all the Brookstone ads and worked with Fed Ex for six years. In 1998 he decided he didn’t want to illustrate any longer and wanted to try his hand at painting. April 2013
When we talked about the paintings, I asked about the reception he’s gotten from the biker community. He summed it up in one word “Incredible”. He always figured he would get a good response because of the subject of his paintings. He paints mainly antique motorcycles like pan heads, knuckles, and flat heads. It’s all the things bikers love and a recipe for success. I also usually have a cute girl or woman painted with respect and class. He finds women like the paintings as much as the men do because of that. If you happen to go to a show and find out David is there displaying and selling his art, find something you like and buy it early. He tells me he sells out at most of the shows. So if you were thinking about getting a Uhl painting, don’t be hesitant to pull the trigger or you may just miss the chance to own one of these amazing works of art. His studios are located in Golden Colorado. David usually does attend Daytona Bike week, Sturgis, and he also goes to the Arizona Bike shows. He came to the East Coast because he was invited to the New York bike show. So he decided to do Timonium and then onto Indiana before going to Daytona. Which worked out good for us and we got a chance to see his work up close. For the next year and a half he’s going to do some painting of the history of wine making. He said it was going to be “some pretty serious art”. He also said he would keep doing the motorcycle paintings during this time. Which I was glad to hear. Thunder Roads is going to feature David’s work in upcoming monthly editions as it becomes available. Tell us what you think and we will pass it on to David. In the meantime if you’re interested in obtaining some great motorcycle art for your collection you can go to www.uhlstudios.com or contact Greg Rhodes at 303-913-4840. Be sure to tell them that Thunder Roads MD-DE-DC sent you.

A farmer ordered a high-tech milking chine. Since the equipment arrived when his wife was out of town, he decided to test it on himself first.

So, he inserted his “manhood” into the equipment, turned on the switch and everything else was automatic. Soon, he realized that the equipment provided him with much more pleasure than his wife did. When the fun was over, though, he quickly realized that he couldn’t remove the instrument from his ‘member’. He read the manual but didn’t find any useful information on how to disengage himself. He tried every button on the instrument, but still without success. Finally, he decided to call the supplier’s Customer Service Hot Line with his cell phone. “Hello, I just bought a milking machine from your company. It works fantastic, but how do I remove it from the cow’s udder?” “Oh, don’t worry,” replied the customer service rep, “The machine will release automatically once it’s collected two gallons. Have a nice day, now.”
When John and Mary first got married John said, “I am a sex addict and I’m putting a box under the bed to help control my addiction. You must promise never to look in it.” In all their 30 years of marriage Mary never looked. However, curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $81,874.25 in cash. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was really curious as to how? That evening they were out for a special Anniversary dinner. After dinner Mary could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying, “I am so sorry. For all these years I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. However, today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know why do you keep the 3 beer cans in the box?”

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph’s Hospital. She meekly asked, “Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?” The operator said, “I’ll be glad to help, dear. What’s the name and room number of the patient?” The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, “Norma Findlay, Room 302.” The operator replied, “Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse’s station for that room.” After a few minutes the operator returned to the phone and said, “I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged later today.” The grandmother said, “Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.” The operator replied, “You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?” The grandmother said, “No, I’m Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one around this damn place will tell me jack-shit.” A Preacher was explaining that he must move on to a larger congregation that will pay him more. There is a hush within the congregation. No one wanted him to leave. They adored their Preacher. Joe Smith, who owns several car dealerships in the City stands up and proclaims, .. ‘If the Preacher stays, I will provide him with a new Cadillac every year, and his wife with a Honda mini-van to transport their children! and the Congregations children on Church outings.” The congregation sighs in relief, and applauds.
John thought for a while and said, “I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again.” Mary was shocked, but said, “Hmmm, I am very disappointed and saddened by your behavior. However since you are addicted to sex, I guess it does happen and I guess 3 times is not that bad considering your problem.” John thanked her for being so understanding. They hugged and made their peace.
Sam Brown, a successful entrepreneur and investor, stands and says, ‘If the Preacher will stay on here, I’ll personally double his salary, and also establish a foundation to guarantee a college education for all his children!’ More Amen’s and loud applause.
A little while later Mary asked John, so why do you have all that money in the box? John answered; “Well, whenever the box filled up with empty cans, I took them to the recycling center and redeemed them for cash”.

Sadie Jones, age 88, stands and announces with a smile, ‘If the Preacher stays, .... I will give him sex!’ There is total silence and shock. The Preacher, blushing, asks her, ‘Mrs. Jones, whatever possessed you to say that?’
while his wife replies, ‘Well , I just asked my husband how we could help, and he said,......’Ah, Hell, Screw him!’

Big show 2013

here do you start? That’s the question that comes to mind while writing this follow up on this year’s Big Show. Between the record breaking attendance of over 41,000 and the amazing displays of creativity, this is one show that truly sets the bar. From the time the doors opened Friday morning til they closed on Sunday the crowd was non-stop. It got so busy Saturday that the Fire Marshall had to shut down the entry thru the gate for one hour to insure that the show did not exceed maximum capacity. Even with that, I would be willing to bet that there were no disappointed attendees at the Big Show this year. I mean how could you; this show had something for everyone. For the all custom builders at heart, there were several of the top builders from the area and beyond here, such as C&C Cycle, Severe Cycles, and Kundratic Kustoms just to name a few. The bikes they displayed were at the top of the market and really helped the imagination of all us enthusiast with ideas for our own rides. Very rarely do you get the chance to talk to these artists and learn where their inspirations or ideas come from. Jim Wubben of P.B. Choppers was also in attendance all three days. Jim had a large display of all his masterpieces from his Dale Earnhardt Sr. Bike to his latest creation the “Duke”, a John Wayne tribute bike that he unveiled for the first time on Saturday. Again just another great attraction among many that the Big Show provides. Speaking of Artist, you really missed out on an opportunity if you didn’t make to this year’s Big Show to meet and see some of the latest and greatest master pieces from the man himself, David Uhl. This artist is without a doubt in my mind and several others that were in attendance the next generations Norman Rockwell. I know that’s a big statement to make, but his art speaks for itself. As soon as you walked in the show and around the corner you automatically were drawn in at the mere sight of these amazing paintings that were on display. If you did indeed miss the chance to see these works of art go to www.uhlstudios.com and check them out for yourself and you be the judge. As far as the eye could see the show was also packed with the local works of art from riders all over the east coast region and beyond. With theme bikes that ranged from the Smurfs to Aliens and just about everything in between. There were over a 125 bikes entered into the Custom Bike and Antique Bike Competition this year, and after the 26 hours of judging was completed to insure that each bike received the same amount of time for inspection. We would like to congratulate the top 5 winners in the show who are: Judges ChoiCe Best of show: will fair 2006 independent Low Life Best dispLay of show: herb wolfe 1996 harley ironhead sportster

As it should be we will introduce the ladies first. That’s right Michele Smith from the new Discovery Channel show Two Wheel Thunder was present and signing autographs and taking photos with all her fans. She was not the only star that was making an appearance at the Big Show this year. Vinnie & Cody 38

from Discovery Channel’s 10 year run of “American Chopper” were also on hand. Finally let’s not forget the nicest bad guy you’ll ever meet Emilio Rivera or as some of you may know him as Marcus Alvarez, the President of the Mayan Motorcycle Club, on the popular FX show Sons of Anarchy. Without a doubt one of the nicest celebrities I have had the privilege of meeting.
Manufactures that were present as well with their newest editions and great deals. It was defiantly a power house of local dealers from Battley Cycles, Pete’s Cycle, and Bob’s BMW there was no short on the variety of bikes to look at.
With all that said there is still so much to go over and I don’t want to leave anything out so if you didn’t make it out this year you will realize what a huge mistake it was and start marking your calendar now for next year’s Big Show at the Timonium Fairgrounds located in Timonium, Maryland February 7th – 9th 2014. For more information about next year’s show check out cycleshow.net
One thing that gets over looked is the Big Show is the place to go to set your schedule for the rest of the year with all the areas upcoming rallies on display as well like Mountainfest, Morgantown, WV, OC Bike Bikes to the Beach, Ocean City, MD, and Thunder in the Valley, Johnston, PA. to list a couple. Honestly the Big Show delivers like no other. Between the timing of the show allowing you to get ramped up for the upcoming riding season and the 100 plus vendors to allow you to buy whatever it is you may need to get ready all under one roof.
On to the next great feature, we would have to go with all the great deals to be had with all the big name and local vendors in the building from Baltimore HD with their massive display of new bikes and bike accessories, to vendors like Everything Jack Daniels, Rider Insurance and let’s not overlook all the leather and riding gear vendors you would ever need. You can’t fail to mention all the
As if all that wasn’t enough to fill the need for some bikes on a cold winter’s day. Lowside’s Swapmeet held some hands on workshops and tool technique demonstrations for the fast growing garage-built motorcycle scene. Covering all the Café Racers, Bobber’s, Rat Bikes, and more was another successful part of the show this year as well.

2013 Victory Judge Preview Victory takes a break from baggers and bobbers and goes back to muscle bikes
W
By Pete Brissette Jan. 20, 2012 Photography by Victory
ith the introduction of the muscle-car-inspired Judge, Victory has taken a sharp and deliberate turn from its well-worn path of creating blingy cruisers, bagger/touring rigs, and bobber-themed rides like the High-Ball and the new Hard-Ball that melds bobber with touring. The Judge marks a change in Victory’s recent product offerings, but where the Minnesota-based company continues to stick to business-as-usual thinking is by placing its powerful Freedom 106/6 50-degree air/oil cooled, fuel-injected V-Twin with six-speed gearbox in yet another Victory motorcycle. This same engine that motivates many Victorys now also gives the Judge its go power. We’ve ridden the Freedom 106/6 many times over the years, and always come away impressed by how much bang for the buck it gives.
The 3.0 inches of travel out back isn’t quite as much as on some of Victory’s other models but is still better than what’s found on various competitor bikes. A single 300mm rotor with four-piston caliper in front and 300mm disc with two-piston caliper in the rear help keep the Judge’s speedy ways in check. The Judge’s 4.5-gallon fuel tank is the same capacity as on the Victory Hammer S and Hammer 8-Ball, but the Judge’s claimed dry weight of 660 pounds is roughly 12 pounds lighter than its Hammer brothers’ dry weight. The Judge has moderately less steering rake than the Hammers (31.7 degrees vs. 32.0 degrees), but its 6.7 inches of trail is quite a bit more than 5.5 inches on both Hammers. The presumption here is that Victory wanted to give the Judge snappier handling via its tighter rake and a wheelbase (64.7 inches) nearly a full inch shorter than the Hammers’, but employed longer trail to provide stability to complement quick steering action. What will also likely make the Judge steer quicker is its narrow 140mm rear tire. Both Hammers use a fat 250mm bun that slows their steering responses. The Freedom 106/6 V-Twin powering the Judge is familiar stuff, but all-new chubby 16inch wheels and tires are a notable departure from larger wheel sizes Victory uses on many other models.
While Victory has often had muscle bikes in its lineup, the Judge is the first new power cruiser to come out of Victory in years.
The Judge’s drag-style handlebar and bodywork are all new, as is the styling of the taillight, fender struts and new EFI covers between the cylinders. But it’s perhaps the new headlight that’s the biggest departure from Victory’s usual styling cues. The large, angular headlamp – a signature Victory styling element – seen on all other models, save for the touring models with full front fairings, is replaced by a more traditionally shaped, round headlight. A single instrument gauge sits just above the new headlight. The Judge features new 16-inch 5-spoke cast wheels wearing Dunlop’s 491 Elite II tires (130/90 front, 140/90 rear) with raised white lettering. The rear fender is abbreviated and minimized, a styling cue likely intended to enhance the bike’s muscular stance, and just about everywhere you look on the bike it’s been given the black-out treatment. Suspension is typical fare, with a traditional telescopic fork and single mono-tube shock. The good news here is that despite the Judge’s friendly 25.9-inch seat height Victory didn’t sacrifice suspension travel just to achieve such a low seat height. The plush 5.1 inches of fork travel found on many other Vic models carries over to the Judge. The Judge sports a number of new design elements, like this updated taillight, as well as a new, round-style headlight.
Color options for the Judge are Gloss Black at $13,999 and Suede Nuclear Sunset or Sunset Red, both for $14,399. The Judge offers a significant savings compared to the $18,499 Hammer S, but some of the Hammer’s extra cost is expected since it provides dual front brakes, along with upgraded wheels and suspension. However, more interesting is the proximity of the Judge’s price to the Hammer 8-Ball’s $14,499. While Victory is proud of its selection of price-conscious models
The new Victory Judge looks like an entertaining ride. We’re looking forward to doing lots of burn..., er, um... riding it soon.
found in its sub-line of 8-Ball models, we can’t help but wonder if the new Judge might supplant the Hammer 8-Ball as Victory’s entrylevel power cruiser.
