FEBRUARY……If you’re reading this you best be at the EASYRIDER BIKE SHOW! Cause it’s winter and baby……that’s the biggest Show in town! So damn glad they moved it here to Nashville. I think they’ll stay. I mean, come on, we’ve got our own hit t.v. show, we’ve got the Blue-Bird Café, we’ve got Tootsie’s, baby we’ve got history and better yet, we got attitude, but it’s a friendly, down-home “tude”, and we’ve got stories. Many, many, fabulous stories. I so appreciate a really good story. Like how Willie Nelson wrote “Crying” while living in the small rooms rented out above Tootsie’s or how that’s where Kris Kristofferson and Willie met up and hooked up with Waylon and baby, that’s when soulful, intelligent men who never talked about their feelings, got drunk and wrote legendary songs that were saturated in so much emotion they’d make you re-think your whole life. I respect and am in awe of NASHVILLE for its’ Music City history. But that’s just one reason on a very long list. FEBRUARY is also the month of LOVE. And all you bad-ass bikers need to make sure you do right by your woman and treat her right. You know she deserves it. You know, staying home and my man grilling me a steak and a baked potato and a bottle of Asti, baby, put on some Chris Izaak and take me to bed or lose me forever! Hell Yeah! Only seriously, do the drinking, dancing and lovemaking first and then grill the steak. Cause’ no woman I know wants to get all full up on a fab meal and then go make love while trying to digest. Plan your moves men, or nothing will be moving; if you get my drift, and I knowz you do. FEBRUARY is also the month that Brian and I first met; 1992, on Valentine’s day no less. I’m a true romantic at heart (have you noticed over the years?) and we’d met briefly a few days earlier (at what was then St. Pete Bayfront Center but later became Thunder Dome. Aint that destiny?) Anyway, he got my address from my girlfriend, who’s mom owned the Promotions & Events company he worked at, and he kept cruising my house in a small residential area on his giant Vulcan, around and around and I’m thinking; “when the hell is this hound dog gonna’ stop and knock on the door?”. But he kept cruisin’ and man, his pipes were LOUD!, but sounded hot, so I went out and stood there with my hands on my hips and he stopped like he wasn’t sure where I lived. Right! He asked if I liked bikes and when I came out with my 22 year old, worn to perfection, black leather jacket, the rest was destiny. We rode all night, ended up at my Mom’s at 4am and shared some homemade clam chowder and a bottle of champagne on her front porch. He took me home and just like Stevie Nick’s sang, “when you walked in thru my door, I knew you’d never wanna’ leave….” . I think LOVE is the strongest entity on the face of the Earth. It can virtually change your life. It sure changed ours. We wish you love, bikers. Much Love.

Bullet Points Armed Citizens An Answer to terrorism? The head of INTERPOL says they might be.
The head of the international police organization INTERPOL created a minor stir recently when he suggested that armed civilians might be a more realistic answer to the evolving trend of terrorists attacking “soft targets” like shopping malls, schools, and public events, than trying to “harden” those areas with more physical barriers and police officers. While the comments have been picked up by some conservative media and the rights movement, they have been roundly ignored by the traditional media, not just in the US, but worldwide. You can bet that his comments won’t be ignored by the statist authorities at the UN and the White House though. I think it is very likely that this very prominent, popular, and effective law enforcement official will soon find himself under fire for all sorts of seemingly unrelated matters, and in a relatively short time, be looking for a new job. It is simply not politically acceptable for anyone within the “circle of trust” to be trusting of the common people. Taking a public position in favor of armed civilians over expansion of police presence and powers is unlikely to go unpunished. In an interview with ABC News, which was reported on ABC’s web site, but, so far as I have been able to find, not aired on the television network, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that in free societies, governments have only two viable options for addressing attacks on civilians: “One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that,” he said alluding to the positive impact of a few civilian gun owners during the assault and siege on the Westgate Mall in Kenya last month. “Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.” Security that he indicated would be unfeasibly prohibitive in costs of both money and liberty. During a press conference at the opening of the 82nd body, Noble commented that the Westgate Mall attack was an example of how terrorism is evolving as security evolves. As security has become more stringent at high-profile, potential terrorist targets like airports, major commerce centers, and embassies, terrorists have been shifting toward “soft targets” like schools, theaters, and shopping malls. This isn’t really so much a new trend, as a progression. History is rife with examples of terrorists and “resistance fighters” shifting from hardened military and government targets to “soft” civilian targets as a means of attracting more attention, and wreaking more havoc. History shows the same trend among demented mass murderers who want to go out as infamous celebrities by running up the most gut-wrenching body-counts. Both the terrorists and the lunatics have similar objectives – to make the biggest headlines possible by creating the most emotional impact. Not long ago, the easiest way to do that was to hijack or plant a bomb on an airplane. The natural vulnerability of a few hundred, unarmed people in an oversized aluminum can hurtling through the sky at 600 miles an hour was an obvious 6

choice because just a little damage to the aircraft or the pilots would almost guarantee the deaths of everyone on board. Increased security has reduced the odds of success though, so terrorists have shifted their focus. The attack in Mumbai, India a few years ago demonstrated the effectiveness of a smallscale, military-style assault on an unarmed population. The Kenya attack used Mumbai as its blueprint. Unlike the 9-11 attacks, an assault like Mumbai and Westgate requires little training, skill or preparation. All it takes is people willing to do the deed, and some easily acquired armaments. INTERPOL chief Noble pointed out that al Qaeda had recently issued a call for “brothers to strike soft targets, to do it in small groups.” As he said, it puts police in a difficult position. “How do you protect soft targets? That’s really the challenge. You can’t have armed police forces everywhere.” In a private interview with ABC Noble expanded on the theme. “Ask yourself: If that was Denver, Colorado, if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly?” Noble told ABC. “What I’m saying is it makes police around the world question their views on gun control. It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?’ This is something that has to be discussed.” “For me it’s a profound question,” he continued. “People are quick to say ‘gun control, people shouldn’t be armed,’ etc., etc. I think they have to ask themselves: ‘Where would you have wanted to be? In a city where there was gun control and no citizens armed if you’re in a Westgate mall, or in a place like Denver or Texas?’” Valid questions which I’m sure most reporters will continue to ignore or dance around. In the conclusion of their report, ABC took a dig at Noble’s comments by pointing out that the gun control debate in the US had recently been ignited by mass shootings, including one in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, just outside of Denver. What the report failed to note is that the movie theater where the massacre took place was posted “No Guns.” Not only that, the demented murderer passed by at least two other theaters that were closer to his home, but which were not posted “Gun Free Zones.” Perhaps that was coincidence or there is some other explanation, but on the face of it, it suggests that Noble is on to something. It is frankly astonishing to me that Noble has taken this position publicly. I hope he will pursue this line of reasoning and that he can hold onto his position at INTERPOL long enough for his philosophy to spread through the agency and into police agencies they deal with. When victims become firstresponders, criminals will become more cautious. ABC and the media can dismiss these ideas, but I’m not expecting terrorists to storm the Phoenix Cabela’s store any time soon.

“ALL IS WELL”
She didn’t need anybody speaking doubt & unbelief on her “Promise.” What have you invested in the Kingdom of God? So many Christians today think that God owes them something. Then “she ran to The Man of God,” when your “Promise” looks like its dead, that’s the time to run to God not away from Him. The Prophet of God told his servant “go and lay my staff upon the face of the boy,” but the servant returned and said “the child is not awaked.” Now even the instructions from The Man of God are not working, things could not have looked any worse, but this woman didn’t give up, “she caught the Prophet by his feet…and said, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.” When all looks hopeless, you have to hold on to the kingdom of God. The Man of God went into the room where the dead Promise laid “and shut the door upon them and prayed unto the lord.” The Prophet of God wouldn’t even let the mother into the room; he knew she and the others were too grieved. There are some problems in life that you don’t need to share with others on the phone or on Facebook, when your “Promise” looks dead, you don’t need sympathy, you need faith, you need your own Man of God, not a TV preacher. “The flesh of the child grew warm…the child opened his eyes,” during this whole process, the mother kept saying over & over again “ALL IS WELL!” She kept “speaking things that be not as though they were”, she didn’t speak what she saw, and she spoke the Word of God. Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.
2 Kings 4: 8-36 we read the historical account regarding a Shunammite woman and her encounter with the Prophet of God, Elisha. She first noticed this “holy Man of God” passing by her home on a regular basis, “she constrained him to eat bread” to feed this Man of God every time he would pass by her house. She then decided to “make him a chamber…set him a bed, a table, a stool and a candlestick.” She did this out of her love for God and her respect for The Man of God, not out of legalism, the law or religion. Then The Man of God asks the question “What can I do for thee?” She was without a child, so The Man of God spoke “about this time next year thou shall embrace a son.” First thing to notice is that she didn’t do these things for The Man of God to get something in return. This is where a lot of the prosperity messages of today have missed the mark. You don’t give to get, you don’t give out of religious legalism, and you give out of your love for God. Legalism can only change your behavior for a season, when you realize that you can never measure up to the law; your behavior will go backwards. But when your spiritman comes to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, your spirit has been renewed and instead of the “Thou shall not” it becomes “I choose not.” But then her child dies, what do you do when you have done all you can do for the Kingdom of God and your “Promise” looks dead? The Bible says “she laid her dead son on the bed of The Man of God and shut the door upon him.” Why lay her dead son on the Prophet’s bed? Because she knew she had an investment in the To be found faithful, kingdom of God! Why shut the door on her dead son? Pastor Ron 8

Butter or quality margarine 2 Tbls. Rosemary 1 tsp. Paprika 1 tsp. Crushed Coriander 4 Bone-In, skin-on chicken thighes 4 Bone-In, skin-on chicken drumsticks (legs) Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Scatter thinly sliced onions all around a large-size cast iron skillet. Add water & stock mixture. Lay the potatoes over the onions and drizzle with olive oil all over potatoes. Rub rosemary seasoning between your fingers or palms of hands to “wake up” the flavor. Place small pats of butter or quality margarine all around the potatoes layer. Make a small rub of salt, pepper, paprika & crushed coriander and rub it thoroughly into all pieces and all sides of chicken. Lay chicken skin side up over the potatoes layer. Roast until chicken is cooked through and potatoes are tender. Apprx. 1 hour. * When I make this I spoon a whopping spoonful of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt over top of chicken & potatoes. The coolness of the cream or yogurt is a perfect contrast. VELVET IN YOUR MOUTH CREAMED SPINACH 1 Medium Bag of Frozen Spinach; thawed completely and placed into a clean, thin kitchen cloth and wrung out totally until all the liquid is out. 2 Cups of Heavy Cream; room temperature 1 Small Vidalia Onion; sliced in very thin slices 1/2 Stick of butter or 3 Tbls. of quality margarine 1 tsp. of Nutmeg Take a non-stick skillet, put a tad of butter in pan over medium heat. Add your heavy cream and let it get heated up and gradually in small handfuls, gently add to the skillet mix. Take a wooden spoon and stir in circles to incorporate spinach totally into sauce. After it’s all well blended, add your butter and stir gently until also well incorporated. Sprinkle your nutmeg over the entire skillet blend and stir into the mix. Cinnamon 4 Eggs 1 tsp. Mexican Vanilla Extract (in Mexican food aisle in super market) If can’t find, just use regular Vanilla Extract 1 Pinch of Cayenne Pepper (you decide how much “KICK” you want 2 Cups Flour 1/2 tsp. Salt 1-1/4 Cups Bitttersweet Chocolate Chips Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Butter a 13x9 inch baking pan. Line your pan with parchment paper while leaving a 1-inch overhand on 2 sides. Add eggs 1 at a time. beating until just combined. Stir in Mexican Vanilla Extract. Mix in flour gently and salt gradually. Do not over-mix. Rough blend in chocolate chips. This will be a lumpy batter. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 30-40 minutes (40 for crispier sides) Transfer pan to a wire rack; cool completely. Dust lightly with confectioner’s sugar and slightly drizzle with Hershey’s hot, melted chocolate syrup. Serve with top-quality vanilla ice-cream. Serve up 2 for you and your Valentine, but only use one spoon. THE MORNING AFTER VAL-DAY Cook up a skilletful of Huevos Rancheros (Google it) Make a BIG pitcher of ice-cold Bloody Mary’s Eat lightly, drink enough to smooth the edges Go back to bed together and enjoy even more of what you totally enjoyed the night before. Bullet Points Six tipS for chooSing the right concealed carry SyStem Courtesy of Lee Williams ~ Herald-tribune
Professionals who carry a firearm every day know that when it comes to concealing a pistol: simple is better, comfort is great and security is everything. Also, the latest gimmick or concealment fad is probably a waste of money. Here are some tips to help you find the right way to conceal your firearm safely and securely while still allowing quick access: 1. The best way to carry a concealed weapon is on your strong side, in a secure holster affixed to a quality belt, concealed under a shirt, jacket or suit coat. If you live in the northern climes or wear a suit often, your concealed carry concerns are solved. The rest of us have to rely on a shirt. There are dozens of models of concealed carry shirts on the market, designed with Velcro seams that break free and allow quick access to your pistol. The problem is, they’re expensive. I’ve always found it much easier to buy a shirt one-size larger, which usually offers enough room for a medium-framed automatic for most people, or a larger frame pistol or BAR for us XXL-ers. 2. Pocket carry is a good option, but only with a pocket holster. My pockets are usually full of lint and bits of tobacco - neither of which improves a weapons function. A pocket holster keeps your pistol clean, but it also keeps it properly oriented, allowing a smoother, more reliable draw stroke. 3. Avoid garments with built in holsters. There are t-shirt holsters, underwear holsters, and non-bullet-resistant vests with holsters incorporated into the design. These are great if you don’t sweat. If you do, you’ll need to wash the garment often, which significantly degrades the holster’s retention properties.
4. Avoid gimmicks. People have been carrying handguns for more than 300 years. Strapping on a pistol is really not that complicated a process, so every time I hear of a new holster system, I get skeptical. The explosion of concealed-carry permits across the country has given rise to some rather unique concealment options, some of questionable utility. Some of the new concealment gadgets defy description - such as the man-bra-holster, or the concealed carry jock - one that looks like a girdle. 5. Avoid concealed-carry handbags and fanny packs. What’s the first thing a robber is going to snatch from a woman - her purse. There goes her money, keys, ID and pistol. There is a cottage industry being created to manufacture designer CCW purses. However, these are not safe. Even if the robber isn’t successful at yanking the purse away on the first attempt, it will be difficult to draw a pistol while engaged in a tug-ofwar. As to fanny packs, here in Sarasota a fanny pack screams one thing - TOURIST! The bad guys know they are chock-full of cash and credit cards. If they snatch one containing a pistol, it’s an added bonus. 6. Avoid tactical garments. To a bad guy, someone dressed in BDU pants, desert boots, a tactical vest and a tactical shirt sends one message shoot me first. I am guilty of violating this selfdefense tenet. My wife says my closet is starting to look like that Big and Tall rack at an Army-Navy store. In my own defense, many of these garments come with very handy concealment options. The best solution is not to wear all of them at once. For more info go to: thegunwriter.blogs.heraltribune.com

Gracie Gold takes women’s crown in US Figure Skating Championship
The reigning US silver medalist skated to a 72.12 in the short program and backed that up with a 139.57 in the free skate, totaling 211.69 points and winning the 2014 US Figure Skating Championship Saturday night at TD Garden. “This evening was a dream come true; this is definitely one of the best nights of my life,” Gold said. “I was able to do what I train and I just went out there and I did what I could. And I think, for the most part, I left it all out on the ice, and I’m so proud of myself.” With the medal around her neck, Gracie had some fun suggesting the headlines that people could come up with to describe her championship. “It’s pretty hard to come up with a headline when it comes to my skating, but I think people can get creative and come up with a new one,” she said with a hint of tongue-in-cheek. “Maybe something to do with ‘Gold?’ But I don’t know, this may be the time to use it.” Last year’s US Junior champion, Polina Edmunds, came out swinging in her first US Championships as a senior skater, finishing the short program in second with a score of 66.75. The 15-year-old soared into first place with two skaters to go after scoring 126.88 points in the free skate. She totaled 193.63 points and took home the silver. “I’m really happy with how I skated, and I think that I skated almost as strongly as I could,” Edmunds said. “I think that my results were very good and very fair . . . I’m really happy that I did it and it’s an Olympic year, and I’m just really excited to see what happens from here on out.” Mirai Nagasu, hoping to make back-to-back Olympic squads, put together a flawless free program, scoring 125.30 points and taking the bronze medal after ending the short program in third place. “I am so happy, I’m really at a loss for words,” Nagasu said. “I’m just so happy. I’m a little bit speechless. I didn’t know if I would be able to get to this. I’m just at a loss for words. “It’s been quite a roller coaster ride since the last Olympics Nationals, and I have to say that it’s been a really emotional year for me . . . I think I did my best and hopefully they pick me to the Olympic team, because I haven’t always been the most consistent skater, but I know that under pressure I’m pretty good, most of the time . . . I know that I have it in me, so I hope that I can prove myself again.” Two-time defending US Champion Ashley Wagner had an early and a late fall in her free program, finishing with a score of 182.74, ending the event in a disappointing fourth place. “This is a mental competition,” Wagner said. “This is tough because you go out there and your dreams are literally on the line. I’ve been there in practice and I’m that skater that deserves to be on the team, but right now under the pressure of it coming true or not, it’s hard to block that out. It’s hard to not feel like your legs are full of lead. “It’s embarrassing; it’s embarrassing as two-time national champion to put out a performance like that. So, I did what I did and now we’ll see what happens after this. Luckily I had a decent season, that definitely helps my case, but other than that, I’m embarrassed for that program.” © Copyright 2014 Globe Newspaper Company.

Choices
nentially as the patient gets older. What kind of a biker would I be if I was always soft and pissing my pants? My next ride on this odyssey was to meet with the VA’s Radiation Oncologist. He first suggested brachytherapy, which is implanting three radioactive seeds inside the prostate which would hopefully kill the cancer cells over a period of a few months. This was not an option for me, or anyone with small children at home, since those children would have to keep their distance from the patient for a period of several months. I rode home angry at the VA and their Doctor’s. The idea of not being able to hold my children was unacceptable.

ll too often we are compelled to make decisions based on the choices and information presented to us. There are times when we must question the choices presented and perform our own due diligence. Issues regarding our health and quality of life are a prime example of when we should question everything, including the motivation of the medical professionals making the recommendations. Years of steady upward trending Public Service Announcements finally convinced me to agree to a biopsy. The procedure was uncomfortable and unfortunately on March 26 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Fortunately the cancer was early stage and was determined to be low risk. This is where I made my first choice: The first week of April I went to my closest Harley dealer, City Limits Harley Davidson, and purchased a 2013 Road Glide. My bike became my best therapy, my preferred method of transport, and over the next few months I often retreated to the open road to think about my treatment options. I remember riding my Harley to the consultation with the Urologist reviewing my pathology report. He immediately suggested my prostate be removed and offhandedly informed me that there was a real risk of impotence and incontinence. I realized I shouldn’t expect any Urologist to recommend anything but removal of the prostate, since this is the treatment method Urologists derive their income from. Further investigation on my part revealed that the percentages of impotence and incontinence (of patients who have had their prostate removed) increase expo14
The next go around the VA Radiation Oncologist explained the option of IMRT. Incidentally all of the internal organs in the path of the beam will also be irradiated. Individuals tolerate this process differently but additional side effects and medical problems are often caused by the unnecessary irradiation of otherwise healthy organs. Once again I was riding home angry, not really a good idea when you’re on top of 900 pounds of speeding metal. When I asked about Proton therapy the Oncologist explained the VA does not support Proton therapy. He cited studies and claimed those studies have proven Protons produces the same results as far as the reoccurrence of prostate cancer. When I read the studies quoted by the Oncologist I felt the Oncologist had misrepresented the study. Protons are delivered from alternating sides on a daily basis, and on a straight line basis directly to the Prostate. Unnecessary irradiation of healthy organs is avoided. Proton Therapy is much less likely to produce the unfortunate side effects of impotence and incontinence. The choice for me was clearly Proton Therapy. The treatment was explained to me as the least invasive with the least amount of side effects. As of October 21st I completed the 44 daily treatments. I feel no worse for wear. All in all the experience was only a mild inconvenience and I look forward to a life where I don’t wear a diaper, piss in a bag, and all my “equipment” still works. There are many options and the factors/variables for making your decision are infinite. The one factor I did not hear Dr’s give enough serious consideration to is the quality of life after treatment. Your Doctor goes home to his big house with a fat check in his pocket. You are the one that has to live with your decisions; so get on your bike and let that motor, two wheels and the wind in your face help you do what’s best for you!

O
ne evening in early December I found myself racing my minivan south on France Avenue in Edina, Minnesota, on snow and freezing covered streets. I passed one slow poke on the right before realizing it wouldn’t make much sense to be in a car accident so close to where I was going. Better to slow down and arrive in one piece late than not at all. What was I speeding toward? It was the Southdale 16 Cinema where a screening of the motorcycle documentary “Why We Ride” was being held. I had heard a little bit about the film and even seen its short yet unrevealing trailer. Talk was that this was a reincarnation of “On Any Sunday,” the landmark biker film from the mid-1970s. This screening was part of a soft opening before the film would be officially released internationally in 2014 (DVDs are now available, according to its website, “at motorcycle dealers everywhere”). On the way I thought: Oh sure, I’ll get all worked up, annoy and prod family members, rush through traffic— only to be disappointed. As I have been so many times before.
circle (as Mrs.Bocek, my senior high school English teacher tried to pound into my head) with another motorcycle on a sunset beach riding away from us as the narrator intones, “… and tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.” In between, the film tells a motorcycle story filled with history, passion, life, fun, and adventure. Yes, riders are interviewed and they answer the usual questions. When did they first start riding? What was their first bike? How old were they when they got interested in motorcycles? These have all been asked before, but they are necessary ingredients for a two-wheeled yarn. The film moves on with history, from the start of motorcycles, to the effect of Henry Ford on motorcycling, board racing, club development, the “bad-boy” image, and to the growth of the sport as we know it today. I already knew a lot of that stuff, but did you know that board racing—with motorcycles that had no brakes—began with bicycle board races? Motorcycles were used only as pace vehicles until someone got the idea to race them.
But it was with the photography—still, full speed, and slowmotion—where this movie hit its stride. Inspired by “On Any Sunday,” the slow motion study of road racers and motorcross competition is simply stunning. One scene shows a line of ten road racers coming head on through a short S curve, with the lead bike leaned left. Right behind the leader comes more bikes, straight up, with the following riders leaned right. The Not this time. Many motorcyclists have lamented long and photography creates a bright slithering and snake-like creature loud that too few good motorcycle movies exist. Well, add coming right at you. In slow motion. I’ve never seen anything one more to the A-list of biker flicks, because “Why We Ride” like it. did, indeed, not disappoint. The film stars Kenny Roberts, Mert Lawwill, Troy Lee, Arlen The movie opens with a motorcycle on a beautiful beach rid- Ness, Alonzo Bodden, Gloria Struck, Keith Code, Dave Eking toward the audience. racing champion in the days when Daytona was held on the beach, a tireless worker, a man’s man, and a beloved and devoted father.
World Champion Kenny Roberts explains how flat track racing helped his road racing and caused him to create the hang off knee-dragging style he invented. Motorcyclist Alonzo Bodden remarked, “Racers nowadays are dragging elbows”. Everyone in the theater roared when he added, “When I drag an elbow, I’m in a crash!”
Why We Ride resonated with me in several ways. First, the topic of charity rides is examined. Jay Allen explained that gratitude is a prevalent attitude amongst motorcyclists and one that manifests itself in the many and varied charity rides that go on ceaselessly each riding season. That part is so close to me that I could have written the script for it. Jay’s were my words exactly. Second, there was the theme of going against the grain. In modern times, even with modern machines, to be a biker is to be different in a way that requires self-discovery and more than a little sacrifice. That struck a nerve. When the film dealt with the motorcycle club and bike night scene, Bodden remarked, “Bike nights are the one place that I don’t have to explain why I have four motorcycles.” I’ve got three and how true, how very true that is. Finally, the urgent need to live life now and revel in our riding passion is examined. More than once, an interviewee described how a ride saved their life, or saved their mind, or helped their family situation. “Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.”
WWR spent a significant amount of time on female riders. Road Racer Melissa Paris and husband Josh Hayes had a big role in the movie. They are given lots to say about riding, how they met, and how the common denominator is riding and not gender. Laura Klock and her daughters Erika and Karlee discussed how each of them broke Bonneville National Land Speed records, an unprecedented achievement. And Valerie Thompson is interviewed several times. She ends up revealing she is a member of the Motor Maids Motorcycle Club, is 87 years old, and has a goal of riding until she’s 100. There are stories of inspiration. Ted Simon, author of Jupiter’s Travels, describes his around-the-world ride and his discovery that all peoples of this world have more in common with each other than we don’t. “I have an elevated sense of how good all people of the world are,” he said. He also described his struggles dealing with the superficiality of modern life after he got back from his ride. There is Dave Barr, who lost both legs as a professional soldier, then reclaimed his life by outfitting a Harley-Davidson and eventually riding 83,000 miles on his journey around the globe, a Guinness record, as a double amputee. And finally there is Ed Kretz, to whom a large chunk of the movie is devoted. The film depicts him as a January 2014
So, yes, I am jazzed about this movie. Watching it will force you to look at our sport in a new way while at the same time holding fast to our traditions and long-lived practices. Watching it will make your pride swell and help you realize how pure, precious, and special your riding is—that you are part of a community and lineage of passion and adventure. That’s why we ride. Pleazr & Jawz
Bucket List Ride of a Lifetime! by Rebel Ron
I
’ve been riding street bikes around Franklin since 1976 & I’ve been working at S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia for 12 years along with doing business with the 40 year old bike shop since 1981. I’ve seen & done many wild things in this time period along with meeting some fascinating people. Let me tell you about two of them. Riders in the Middle Tenn. area may recognize these two Chapel Hill residents who both ride with the orange colors of the Weasles motorcycle group, aka a “Drinking Club.” Here are “Pleazr” & “Jawz” Wiedel, two people who have lived the dream in 2013. That dream being a 19,000 mile motorcycle ride crisscrossing America from May 1st to Labor Day. Early last year Jawz lost his job because of downsizing & soon after his wife was laid off from her job. After careful consideration & several adult beverages they decided to make that two wheeling trip they had dreamed of that many of us have on our Bucket List. While enjoying the beaches of Panama City they made the decision to go for it. They had no certain itinerary, no deadlines, some vague plans, & family/friends all across America they had not seen in a while. They traveled with their comfortable & well accessorized Bunkhouse Camper with a faithful GPS along with the determination to travel America away from the Interstates. (Less than 3K
20
miles of this trip were on Interstates.) They toured some War Between The States battlefields on the way out of Tenn. & Miss., visited Pleazr’s Mom in Ft. Smith, Ark., attended a Weasel party in the Ozarks, & cruised by their son’s home in Kansas City. They would ride further on to see too many places to list here but they made it to the Grand Canyon, saw the World’s Largest Ball of Twine, climbed Pike’s Peak, partied at the Hollister Bike Rally, another Weasel party in Portland, crossed the Rocky Mountains a couple of times, went to Harley’s 110 anniversary, & more in 24 states before heading to Sturgis Bike rally. (I asked them what was the best place they visited & both answered Crater Lake, OR. Very beautiful there! ) During this months’ long bike ride they camped out 3/4 of the time along with staying with friends & checking in motels too. They had no problems with either of the Harley’s & only needed maintenance & tires. Incredibly they ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
January 2014
were only rained on 3 times & snowed on once on this long journey. The most miles they rode in one day was 740. Some of the more exciting things they had to deal with in their path were mud slides, major fires, a plane crash, wild animals, & some rough back roads. But the thing to remember is that they lived the dream so many of us riders have longed to do. Cruise the back roads of America like the Sportster riding Bronson from that old TV series. More importantly the Wiedel’s learned what “Freedom” is truly about in our country. It is sacred. Finally, Jawz must be living right because when he finally came home a company from Jacksboro, Tenn. that makes travel trailers for bikes was looking for him about a job. He is now the new Product Development Manager at Bushtech Bunkhouse. Y’all ride safe & often!

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: It’s 2014 and I’d like to make note of some special anniversaries. 250 years ago, in 1764, the British Parliament enacted the sugar act and the currency act. These amounted to taxation on the colonists and planted the seeds of dissent that led to the first shots of the American Revolution in1775. Of course in those days it was common for those who governed to confiscate their wealth from those who worked. I’m sure glad those in government today are not like that and let us keep what we make. Not sure why but I just almost choked!!! 150 years ago the Civil War was raging and this year we will remember the battles of Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Cedar Creek, Franklin and Nashville among others. In those days people took things a lot more serious than today. They would fight over ideas, values and personal liberty. How crazy is that. I’m sure glad we’ve learned that fighting over something is bad. I know my son was pretty happy to get suspended after a kid at school took a swing at him. I guess the school rewards you with time off when you’re attacked. Money must be tight because they didn’t provide psychological counselling. I sure hope his self-esteem will be okay. 100 years ago in 1914 Harley Davidson introduced their first side-car. Beer mostly came in kegs in those days and I think real bikers needed a way to get it home. Harley to the rescue! 70 years ago in 1944 allied forces landed at Normandy to conduct the D-day Invasion. In 2015 we’ll celebrate the end of WWII and the return home of the greatest generation. We think of them as great because they drank beer, bought up surplus WWII motorcycles from the Army, started MC’s and made motorcycling a way of life! In 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was enacted which allowed American Forces to defend themselves
January 2014
from attack in Vietnam. This was the same year that Lieutenant JG Everett Alvarez Jr. was shot down and became the first prisoner of war to be sent to Hoa Lo prison, later referred to by the prisoners as the “Hanoi Hilton.” He was released with Operation Homecoming in 1973. After Vietnam the Veterans bought up sportsters and the last of the WWII motorcycles, joined MC’s and created choppers. Do you see a trend? 1964 was also the year Harley Davidson introduced its first electric starter. You could get it on the Servi-Car. This model was used a lot for Ice cream routes and I guess kick starting was melting the ice cream so, again, Harley to the rescue. Later they put it on two wheeled Harleys but kept the kick starters for a while. I think some bikers were sorry to see the kick starters go because they kept just anyone from riding a motorcycle. Motorcyclists are still a somewhat elite club. However, it was even more elite then because you had to have body mass, rhythm and be part scientist to get the fuel, spark and cylinder position right to kick it off. Mere mortals couldn’t do it. Lastly, 2014 will mark the 5th year of captivity for Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl. I know I mention Bowe a lot in my articles but you don’t hear about him on the nightly news or read about him in the newspapers. The government is happy to keep him a big secret so they don’t have to do the hard job of negotiating his return. Our government has left thousands of service members in the hands of our enemies at the end of just about every conflict since WWI. It will take a lot of voices for Washington to hear the cry to Bring Bowe Home. After a hard winter we need places to ride to, something to warm us up and happy things to put a smile on our face. Maybe this year we’ll get Bowe home and have another great reason to celebrate. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog

2014 PREDICTED TO BE A BREAKOUT YEAR FOR ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Navigant Research recently released a report titled “Electric Vehicles: 10 Predictions for 2014″ in which it is estimated that 700,000 plug-in vehicles will be on the road around the world by the end of this year. The given justifications? Rebounding economies, better products, battery prices that have come down providing competitive price points for e-motorcycles, a large potential clientele that has already had a positive electric experience via e-bicycles, e-scooters and e-mopeds. STUDY SHOWS WOMEN WHO RIDE ARE HAPPIER The old adage that you never see a motorcycle parked outside the psychiatrist’s office may prove more insightful than previously considered, as a new study reveals that the key to happiness for the better half of U.S. is a bike key! The Harley-Davidson Female Riders Survey, conducted by a leading global insights firm and commissioned by the HarleyDavidson Motor Company, shows that women who ride their own motorcycles are noticeably happier, sexier and more confident than women who don’t ride. After interviewing 1,013 adult female riders and 1,016 adult female non-riders, the findings make it clear that riding a motorcycle greatly improves a woman’s feelings of overall self-worth. • More than twice as many always feel happy (37% of riders vs. 16% of non-riders) • Nearly four times as many always feel sexy (27% of riders vs. 7% of non-riders) • Nearly twice as many always feel confident (35% of riders vs. 18% of non-riders) More than half (53%) of women who ride cite their motorcycle as a key source of happiness, according to the findings, and nearly three in four (74%) believe their lives have improved since they started riding. When it comes to romance, the market research collected by Kelton Global also shows riding can improve relationships, as female motorcyclists are more content than non-riders with: • Communication with their significant other (60% of riders vs. 38% of non-riders) • Physical intimacy (51% of riders vs. 35% of non-riders) More and more women are, in fact, riding. A 2012 study by the Motorcycle Industry Council found that women accounted for 12% of U.S. motorcyclists -- up from 10.5% in 2009, and Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson is selling more motorcycles to women than all their competitors combined, according to Claudia Garber, Director of Women’s Outreach for Harley-Davidson. 30
Pennsylvanians who perpetually renew their motorcyclist permits to avoid having to take the state’s motorcycle safety course will soon have their strategy derailed, as a new law will limit the number of times a motorcycle rider can reapply for a learner’s permit to three times in a five-year period. Representative Seth Grove (R-Dover), author of House Bill 892, said some riders have been treating permits like actual licenses since current law allows them to reapply for a permit every year. “Permits are temporary and their purpose is to get riders to obtain full driver’s licenses,” said Rep. Grove. “This legislation will enable riders to learn properly while pushing them to actually get their motorcycle licenses.” Under current law, a permit is valid for one year, but some motorcyclists apply for it year after year so they are never required to take the safety course that’s required to receive the full fouryear license, said Charles Umbenhauer, spokesman for ABATE of Pennsylvania, which supported the measure. Umbenhauer told the York Dispatch that the legislation is a continuation of other safety measures for which the ABATE organization has pushed. Grove also introduced legislation that, when signed into law last year, required minors who hold motorcycle permits to successfully complete a free 15-hour riding course. HB 892 passed the House and Senate with little dissent and was signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett. HELMET USE IN MICHIGAN DROPS AFTER REPEAL, STILL HIGHER THAN NORM A state survey has found that nearly three-quarters of Michigan motorcyclists wear helmets, down from almost a hundred percent before the state ended mandatory universal helmet use in 2012, letting riders opt out under certain circumstances. Data for the Wayne State University study was collected over the summer by use of video cameras randomly placed across the state, and shows that 73% of motorcyclists in Michigan wear helmets, down from 99.4% in 2006 when the last statewide observation survey was conducted. Still, the authors note that Michigan’s usage rate is 13% higher than the 60% of U.S. riders spotted wearing helmets in a nationwide survey in 2012. Also interesting to note, the current rate of riders wearing helmets is slightly lower than the 74.7% of helmeted riders involved in motorcycle crashes, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, meaning lidless riders have a somewhat better safety record. The Michigan Department of Highway Safety said that helmet use varies widely among types of riders: 94.5% of people riding sports bikes wore helmets while only 33.3% of riders of choppers and custom bikes did. Female riders and those under 30 and over 60 also wear helmets more frequently. LOUD MOTORCYCLES TARGETED IN CHICAGO The city of Chicago is turning a deaf ear to loud motorcycles, so much so that that an alderman has proposed a ten-fold increase in fines for violators, those who change their mufflers to make them louder, according to DNAInfo Chicago.

GEORGIA RIDER’S FAMILY QUESTIONS FATAL PURSUIT A young Georgia man was riding his motorcycle to the gym during rush hour when a Richmond County deputy may have broke department policy and gave chase over invalid plates, ending in a fatal crash. The deputy was also on a motorcycle, a vehicle that – because of the risk involved – is “strongly discouraged” from initiating or participating in chases in Richmond and Columbia counties unless extenuating circumstances exist, policy states. According to policy, deputies are justified in beginning a chase even when the only information available is that the suspect hasn’t stopped as ordered, but after a chase has started, policy states that deputies must continuously evaluate the circumstances, such as the initial reason for the pursuit; traffic and weather conditions; time of day; direction of travel; the possible consequences; and most importantly, the safety of the public, the deputy and other law enforcement personnel. “Pursuits may continue if there are reasonable grounds to believe the suspect presents a clear and immediate threat to the safety of others or if the suspect has committed or is attempting to commit a forcible felony,” policy states. The family is considering legal options, but a police spokesman stressed that “while it is the deputy who initiates the traffic stop, it is the violator who initiates the pursuit.” Nationally, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that 6,000 to 8,000 police chases end in crashes each year, with close to 5,000 people being injured and 500 being killed. ROAD CRASHES #1 KILLER OF AMERICANS ABROAD Road crashes have been named the leading cause of unnatural death among Americans who travel outside of the country, where they are unfamiliar with local driving rules and customs, and more U.S. citizens die in car or motorcycle accidents than from terrorist events according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University. January 2014
11/1/11 5:06 PM Using data from the U.S. State Department that represented 5,417 unnatural deaths between January 2003 and December 2009, the research team calculated the rates of death by dividing the number of unnatural deaths by the number of Americans who visited each country.
“We know that the distribution of road traffic fatalities varies dramatically across different parts of the world,” Huseyin Naci, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, told Reuters news service. “While pedestrian deaths are more common in many parts of Africa, motorcycle and bicycle deaths occur more frequently in southeast Asia.” Out of all the countries deemed unsafe for travel, Thailand ranked first among the most traffic-related deaths with 16.5 deaths per one million visits. Vietnam came in second with 15 deaths per one million visits, Morocco third with 12 deaths per one million visits, and South Africa fourth with 11 deaths per one million visits. Researchers also reported that scooter and motorcycle deaths accounted for a large portion of traffic-related deaths. MANDATORY HI-VIS REFLECTIVE CLOTHING LEGISLATED Effective January 1, 2014, it is mandatory for all motorcyclists and passengers to wear reflective jackets or vests when riding in the Republic of Mauritius, an island country in the south west Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa. Road Traffic Regulations passed last fall regarding “Use of High Visibility Clothing” states; “No person shall drive (or ride as a pillion rider on) a motorcycle or auto cycle, unless he wears high visibility clothing without any covering being worn over it that may cause obstruction to its visibility.” The regulations even dictate the type of polyester material, size of reflective strips and specific fluorescent colors (lime yellow, red or orange) “intended to provide conspicuity at all times.” Any person who contravenes these regulations shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 1,000 Mauritian Rupees (MUR).

A dog lover, whose dog was a female and “in heat” agreed to look after her neighbor’s male dog while the neighbors were on vacation. She had a large house and believed that she could keep the two dogs apart. However, as she was drifting off to sleep she heard awful howling and moaning sounds, rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage, as so frequently happens when dogs mate. Unable to separate them, and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was late, she called the Vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the Vet said, “Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the phone ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw.” “Do you actually think that will work?” she asked. “Just worked on me,” the Vet replied, & hung up. During class, a teacher trying to teach good manners, asks the students: “Students, If you were on a date, having supper with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom? Michael?” Michael: “Just a minute, I have to go pee.” Teacher: “That would be rude and impolite!!! Teacher: “What about you Peter? How would you say it?” Peter: “I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom, I’ll be right back.”... Teacher: “That’s better, but it’s still not very nice to say the word bathroom at the dinner table. And you Little Johnny, are you able to use your intelligence for once and show us your good manners?” Johnny: “I would say: ‘Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, who I hope you’ll get to meet after our delicious & expensive supper. “ Light travels faster than sound. “CHANGING of THE SEASONS”
Nobody likes change, there are many of us some call “old School” and we’re proud of it! But there are many new things that we “old schoolers” can’t live without. If we want to compete in this modern day world, we must be able to communicate with it. We must keep our “old school” values and also be able to operate a smart phone at the same time. History proves that for those that don’t “keep up” are left behind. Whether we like it or not the laws concerning our culture has advanced and we had better know them. This Conference will educate the motorcyclist on the changing times and open up communications between clubs. “United we stand, divided we fall.”
