CALENDAR OF EVENTS LISTINGS Contact: Mechele “Me-Mac” MacDaniel, Events Calendar Administrator for TRM 615-496-1493 or, e-mail them to: events@thunderroadstennessee.com What’s on the site goes in the mag! We just returned from Sturgis Kentucky Bike Rally (formerly known as “Lil’ Sturgis” and WOW! they had record-breaking crowds and campers and it was easily the best ever. We’ll have a full scale article for you next month, but in the interim, go to our Facebook and check out our favorite pics till then. For those of you who don’t know, “Super B.” decided it was time to move on and went on his own terms. He died on July 2nd and we buried him on July 7th. He had a huge turn-out as he was born and raised here although he’d seen all of Europe during the war and all of this spectacular U.S.A. with us via the magazine. He was 81 and the Saturday before he passed our small town had a great fireworks show after the local Fair and we all went out to watch from the River and he was totally coherent and on the way back in he said, “well, I guess I’ve seen it all now.” And Sunday morning he woke up and the cancer had gone to his brain. He passed in his sleep around 9am Tuesday. But, as with everything else in life, he did it his way. We had Henry L. Smith Funeral Home Specialty Services bring their bike driven Hearse and it we had close to 100 bike precession. Super B. would have been proud. One thing I have to say here is of course Brian was out of his mind and when choosing Pallbearers, he just asked all guys from down here in the Community and neglected to ask Danny Holder to be the Primary Pallbearer as Danny and M.B. were long term buddies and were literally brothers from another mother.

But in Brian’s defense, Family are not allowed to be pallbearers and we have just always thought of Danny and his Family as an extension of our Family. We know you loved him as much as we all did, Danny & Eva. Super B. lived more in one life than most men do in 3 lifetimes. I always introduced him as the “Jack Nicholson of Ashland City”. He was one of a kind and there will never be another Super B. But he’s our Thunder Angel now and Lil’ Sturgis was bittersweet as this was the first time in 14 years he wasn’t with us. We had our big Saturday steak & shrimp dinner like we always do and we all toasted “Big Daddy” as his Grandkids and their friends called him. M.B., Super B., Super Fly, Big Daddy, Bee-Bee, Bee, B., he had many names but they all meant one thing……one helluva man that will forever be in our souls and many great memories and stories he left with us. We LOVE you Super B. ………always and in all ways possible. You keep an eye on us and make sure we keep doing it right. Hug and tell those you love every single day. Time is fleeting. Be safe out there, but the deer are on the run, so be alert. We love you bikers. toni & brian

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

CALYPSO TROPICAL WHISTLE WETTER Simple: In a blender, pour in: 1/2 Cup of Apricot Preserves 1 Cup of Grand Monet’ 1 Cup of Orange Liqueor Fill the rest to the top with Ballatore’ Sparkling Wine. Pulse gently just to break down preserves and pour into champagne flutes or in a highball glass “on the rocks”. (if you don’t know that expression, you’re too young to drink). SPICY SHRIMP...FOIL WRAPPED, ON GRILL 2 Bags of X-Large Shrimp from Grocery (these are already deviened & peeled, with tails on) In large bowl, whisk up: 2 Cups of Quality Balsamic Vinegar 1/2 Cup of Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Tbls.. of Crushed Red Pepper Flakes 1 Tbls. of Dried Oregano 1 Tbls. of Basil 1 Tbls. of Parsley Place shrimp (doesn’t matter if frozen or defrosted) in X-large food storage bag. Pour whisked up marinade into bag. Seal tight and gently squeeze bag until all shrimp is covered thoroughly with marinade. Refrigerate and let marinade soak in for one hour. Use Heavy-Duty Reynolds Wrap and tear off 2 big pieces and shape into a big oval bowl with sides. Pour entire mixture of shrimp & marinade into foil bowl; add thin slices of lime is so desired and squeeze top together so that it’s air-tight. Place foil bowl on very hot grill and cook with lid down for 5 minutes and then lid up for 5 minutes. Stand back slightly when opening foil bowl. Hot! Either pour onto serving platter or place foil bowl in middle of table if picnic style. These are so packed with flavor. Can be done with chicken also. CRAZY FLAYVA’ STREET CORN 6 Ears of Corn - Pull down husks of corn but do not remove Whisk together: 1 stick of melted butter, 3 Tbls. of Miracle Whip, 1 cup of thoroughly crumbled Feta cheese & 1 Tbls. of Dried Smoked Paprika & 1 Tbls. of Southwest Seasoning. Put corn onto a platter and cover thoroughly with whisked flayva mix. Pull all husks back up over corn; press tightly together and place on hot grill and cook till kernels tender. Have extra “whisk mix” to brush over & chow down!

LESLIE FINLEY’S POKE CAKE Submitted by: Leslie Finley of Chapmansboro, TN Prep: 40 min + Cooling * Bake: 30 Min + Chilling CAKES 1 box white cake mix Follow box directions STRAWBERRY GELATIN 1 ½ cups fresh strawberries - sliced ½ cup water 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp. sugar 1 package strawberry Jell-O BLUEBERRY GELATIN 1 cup fresh blueberries ¼ cup water 2 Tbsp. sugar 1 /2 package Berry Blue Jell-O FROSTING and FILLING 2 ½ cups heavy whipping cream ¾ cup confectioners’ sugar; beat till soft peaks 1. In large bowl, combine the cake mix and prepare exactly per directions. 2. Pour into two greased and floured 8 inch round baking pans. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. 3. For strawberry gelatin, in a small saucepan, combine the strawberries, water and sugar, bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered for 2-3 minutes or until berries are soft. Strain into a small bowl; discard pulp (or refrigerate to eat later!) Dissolve gelatin in syrup, cool to room temperature. Repeat steps to make blueberry gelatin. 4. Use a skewer or end of wooden spoon to poke holes in the top of each cake layer. Pour cooled strawberry mixture over one cake. Pour cooled blueberry mixture over remaining cake. Cover cakes with plastic wrap, refrigerate until gelatin is set – about 2 hours or up to overnight. 5. In a large bowl, beat cream until it begins to thicken. Add confectioners’ sugar, beat until soft peaks form. 6. Run a knife around edge of pans. Remove strawberry cake to a serving plate; spread with 1 cup of whipped cream. Top with blueberry cake. Frost cake with remaining whipped cream. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator. * Won’t be any. I have eaten this cake & it is truly heavenly.

“Who’s on The Lord’s Side”

Moses is preparing his first message to the Children of Israel after their exodus from Egypt, their walk through the Red Sea. Moses knows how important this first message is so he goes up on the mountain top to get direction straight from God Himself. I personally think a whole lot of preachers today should do the same instead of being “politically correct” we should be “biblically correct.” Moses was expecting to come down off the mountain, walk straight into the pulpit and preach the greatest revival know to man, but he walked right into the middle of total “chaos” in the Church. But real leaders are born in “chaos,” there is always an “opportunity in opposition” if you will look for it, all great leaders refuse to quit. The Children of Israel were all worshipping a “golden calf” they were dancing and were all buck naked! We read in Exodus 32:25-26 “And when Moses saw that the people were naked, then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said; Who is on the Lords side? Let him come unto me!” Every Sunday morning I am at my desk putting the finishing touches on my message for that Service. This would be like me coming out of my office and my entire congregation total naked, dancing and worshipping a false god! To better understand what happened, we must first look at the “state of mind” the Children of Israel were in. First of all they had been in captivity for four hundred years; they haven’t heard a word from God in all that time. Everything they know was taught them by the Egyptians, the Egyptians worshiped cows among other things. When the Children of Israel finally got free, they want to celebrate and they needed an image of God and 8

all they knew was what the Egyptians had taught them, so they came up with a “golden calf,” and their flesh took over. This is the same thing that happens today, people that have been in bondage to sin & addiction come to God, they want an image of God so they adapt what they have been told of God and they make their own “golden calf.” Have you ever found it strange that we all claim to worship the same God but different religions claim what you can or can not do, while other religions claim the opposite, but they all claim their way is the only way; too many churches today have taken on the “characteristics of the world system” and that is a “golden calf.” We must know what the Word of God says about every issue, God said: “I am God, I change not, I’m the same yesterday, today and forever!” Moses as head of the flock of God had to ask the hard question; “Who is on the lord’s side?” If you read you bible regarding this account, you’ll see that many repented and some did not, they kept on worshipping the golden calf, dancing naked, and were killed, “about three thousand men fell that day.” Death always follows disobedience; it may be death to your health, wealth, family life or peace of mind. As pastor over my Church, as the state COC Chaplain, as member of NCOM National Christian Unity Council, I must ask the same question as Moses; “WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE?” “Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

AUGUST FLASHBACK BY REBEL RON

By Rebel Ron t is interesting what you might learn about a man & his machine when you ask a simple question some times. Recently S & G Custom Cycles serviced Mr. Chris Hatch’s 2010 Electraglide Classic that is painted a brilliant blue. When he came to pick it up I simply asked why his bike tag said “NEWBLU.” That opened up a conversation on his life long riding & the bikes he has ridden. Chris is like many people who moved to Tennessee in the early 1990s to work at the Saturn plant in Springhill. Not only was he following a career job but also returning to his roots as many Tennesseans moved to Michigan in the early 1900s to work in the automobile factories. He recently retired & lives in Williamsport, Tenn. where he enjoys riding, hunting, & travel. He began riding on a Honda Trail 90 in 1969, then rode various dirt bikes, until he got his first street bike, a rare 1972 Suzuki 380 GT. Traded the GT in on a Honda CB 450 he rode until 1984 when he purchased his first Harley in 1984. This bike was a 1977 Harley Davidson Superglide, it is painted the same color as Chris’ 2010 Harley. And it, too, has a personalized bike tag that says “OLDBLU.” I thought that was great! The old Shovelhead

I

12

had a complete overhaul 5 years ago that allowed it to look, sound & run very well. Shovelheads still rule!!!!!!! Chris next bought a 1979 Electraglide Classic which would be the second of the only three Harleys he would own. However, when he moved

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

August 2013

to Tenn. he had both Harleys for sale. The big brown Classic was purchased & ensured the Superglide would come to the Volunteer State with the Hatch family. Mr. Hatch has 2 grown children, 3 step children, & 2 grand babies to help him pass the time. Much of his time is still is consumed riding these two sweet Harleys around Middle Tenn. so look for Old or New Blu on a road near you. And remember,

when you meet bikers be careful when you ask them a simple question about their bikes because it may require a long yet entertaining answer. Ride safe Chris & welcome back home to Tennessee, even though I am 20 years late telling you so. If you want to be featured here, or know someone who might, please contact Rebel Ron at celticgranda2@yahoo.com or call 931-374-8368.

I

n a world of extreme custom motorcycle builders whom build everything from long raked out choppers to big bad wild baggers and yes even crazy crotch rockets, who in their right mind would even thinking of having a HarleyDavidson with cartoon characters painted all over it ? Well, Thunder Roads Magazine came across such a guy who just happens to be the General Manager at All American Harley-Davidson in Hughesville, Maryland. Steve (Smurf) Keene is quite an interesting guy. Not the typical hard core looking biker but never less he has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years. Like most of seasoned Harley-Davidson riders, Smurf has owned most every make of motorcycle made. You name it he has owned that brand before or ridden it. Let’s give you some background on this Smurf guy. In Steve’s younger days he worked for a local grocery store as a produce manager and since he was working with wet vegetables and fruits his hands would crack and bleed and they were rough and his young daughters would wince whenever he would pick them up. So, he started wearing those Playtex blue gloves to keep his hands in good condition. So one day when the store was having an

14

inspection from their district manager, the backroom floor was freshly mopped and waxed, and Steve happened to not notice the shiny floor and walked across it on his way to the compactor messing up the floor. The receiving clerk that had just done all that hard work went ballistic and yelled at Steve not knowing the intercom system was on and he screamed out, look here you Papa Smurf Look-A-Like %^$%^#$ you ruined my floor ! Well the whole store heard it, laughed like crazy and started calling him Smurf. The name just stuck with him and in fact many people in the community only know him as Smurf. Now, back to the Smurf themed Harley. Steve (Smurf) bought a Heritage Softail Classic in 2004 and was making it his own like so many Harley owners do, customizing it with chrome and other accessories. He made a friend at the All American Harley Davidson Dealership (John Specht) and he had just bought his 2005 Electra Glide Classic. They started going to motorcycle shows put on by the one and only Boston Nichols (Wild Turkey Man) and they were amazed by his motorcycle and the paint schemes on all of the bikes at the shows and decided that they would start the process on their motorcycles. Since John really liked white ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

Sturgis without any big issues. Then, tragedy struck. On their second day in Sturgis the group decided to ride out and check out Mt. Rushmore and other places of interest. Before the day of riding, they decided to stop into a local gas station to top off and be on their way. In case you have not been to Sturgis, there are motorcycles everywhere, and there were lines at every gas pump with bikers trying to fuel up for the day. They topped off the bike and pulled off to the side of the building to wait for our friends staying on the bike with the engine off and resting on its kickstand. He was in amazement at all of the bikes that were rolling down the highway like ants and saw a cool chopper and said hey Tina, look at that ! All he heard was her yell oh my God!!! And then he felt them getting hit, Smurf flew over the handle bars and was in the air when he saw her rolling on the ground. After he realized they had been hit and almost run completely over, he tried to get up to see if she was ok. Not happening…Smurf’s left knee had taken the blunt force of the accident from his bumper and tore his ACM and MCL. All of the bikers that were on the premises there ran over to assist them and the idiot in the truck actually tried to take off! Several bikers detained him until the police got there and the rescue squad took Tina and Smurf off to the hospital. After the day in the ER, Tina and Smurf were released; she with only scratches and big bruises, him in a full leg brace and some much needed pain killers. There went their dream trip to Sturgis! Try seeing Sturgis on crutches and in four wheels (of which they had to rent), that really sucked! But like they say, good things always seem to come from bad situations…Smurf’s Friends gave up some of their riding to taxi me around and they took him to the Full Throttle Saloon where he was actually interviewed for the show! How cool is that!

tigers, he decided to go with a more gothic look with the tigers and Smurf started with some of the Smurf’s painted on his bike reflecting his hobbies such as a Smurf playing the drums (Steve is a drummer) A Smurf hunting with his dogs (Steve has Weimariners) etc. They started showing their bikes as they got more paint on them and the judges seemed to really like what they were doing. All was going well so Smurf and his fiancé at the time (Tina) planned a long awaited trip to the 70th anniversary of Sturgis. They planned with 8 friends and rode the 1700 plus miles to August 2013

The insurance company was great about coming out to the resort where Smurf was staying and estimated the damage to the bike. To Smurf’s dismay, the value to fix all the damage and customization was over the bikes value. So, Smurf worked with the insurance company, All American Harley-Davidson and the painter that had painted the Smurf’s on his bike and 9 months later the bike was good as new (and had some more Smurf’s) on it. Smurf and Tina feel fortunate to have made it through the accident with their health and Smurf is so happy that his Smurf bike is better now than ever before. Smurf has continued to show his bike at every show he can enter it in and loves it when the kids see it and make comments about the Smurf’s. Smurf actually keeps his Smurf bike at the All American to show customers some of the cool ideas that they can incorporate on to their bikes. Smurf and Tina plan another trip to Sturgis in 2014 to complete what they started.

You raised two sons, equally of good stock One was glued to your hip, the other raised by Mom But your same blood runs through them both And that is what keeps this Family solid as rock M.B., Bee or Super B. were all the names you’d answer too You were a true Southern Gentlemen and would never kiss and tell, no matter how much we ragged you You’d say, “Y’all hush, that’s just not cool”. You never met a stranger and were truly interested in who people were and their journey through life And the way you would throw your head back and laugh out loud and straight from the gut And no one appreciated or pulled off a prank better than you, the original “cut-up” Fourteen years of major Rallies, day gigs & poker runs Seven different Promo Vehicles, and YOU were there for literally every single one We all saw and explored this beautiful U.S.A. together But leave it to you to find the closest and best tasting breakfast spot 3 hours before we even woke up You’d be planning out your day of riding and sites to see while we were still walking around at 8am with our coffee cup You were our rock and we all looked to you to make Family decisions You’d assess, and very laid-back tell us what you thought best and, for what reasons Your Grandkids called you Big Daddy and that was who you were; our go-to person we learned from and how to keep it pure Your famous line was “I did it my way” and by God, you most certainly did You even looked Death square in the eye and told him when you would place your final bid And though you left this giant hole that will never again be filled That’s o.k. because we have this amazing love for you that will never, ever, be stilled. Product Spotlight:

The Next Big Thing from Rack and Pull Industries Rack and Pull Industries features The Rack and the Straight Shooter. Allen Cagle is the Founder and President of Rack and Pull Industries, and he has designed and patented the only equipment in the world that can efficiently and effectively measure a motorcycle for frame damage and/or suspension misalignments in just minutes. This equipment is designed for professional motorcycle repair technicians only. If you own a motorcycle dealership or independent shop and you want to grow your business and increase sales and become more profitable then contact www.RackandPull.com and ask about The Rack and the Straight Shooter! The Straight Shooter is the only “live” laser measuring system for motorcycles. It can be used in conjunction with The Rack or stand alone by itself to check for frame damage or misaligned suspension components. The Straight Shooter is a must have tool if a shop does collision repair. The insurance industry in California is already aware of the Straight Shooter and they know it can validate a bent or straight frame. This will remove any guess work for an insurance adjuster and shop owner. I’m sure the insurance companies will appreciate dealing with a shop that can show proof that a bike has frame damage or not! The Straight Shooter is a triangulation measuring system with various targets that when used with The Rack, you can actually see the frame being straightened back to factory specifications. The Straight Shooter also works as a standalone with a bike on a jack or lift. It can help a technician locate the cause of a high speed wobble, directional pull, shake or shimmy. The Straight Shooter measuring system can actually help locate a misaligned, bent or worn out suspension component. The Rack is the only ride up motorcycle frame straightener in the world, and it can also be used as a service rack. It has a rear drop panel that easily unlocks and slides off, so a technician can remove the rear wheel. If the motorcycle is too damaged to ride up the ramp, which it probably will be because 90 % of all wrecked bikes have front end damage, then you can use the winch and dolly system to effortlessly mount the damaged bike on the frame rack for repairs. It has two moveable pulling towers that can pull from any direction needed and has ten tons of pulling capabilities per tower. The Rack has a multitude of toolAugust 2013

ing and universal mounting brackets to mount any motorcycle for frame repairs without causing anymore damage to the finish of the frame. The front of the motorcycle frame can be repaired without removing the engine or any other drive train components. You don’t have to remove the rear swing arm, rear wheel and fender. Since the bike doesn’t get stripped to the frame, the possibility of breaking clips and seals on wiring connectors that can cause problems down the road are eliminated. According to the insurance industry there is an average of 52 days to replace a frame. I’ve seen it take more than two months on several occasions. Avoid this time consuming process and start making time and money by using The Rack. You could repair a frame in just hours! There is a power up kit for every motorcycle these days. Some Harleys have 80 horse power and 95 foot pounds of torque when they’re stock. After a little work they go to 125 horse power with 135 foot pounds of torque. My point is all this horse power and torque is great! But it accelerates the wear and tear on suspension mounts, bushings and bearings, and that causes wobbles, pulls, shakes and shimmies. Now as a shop owner you have the opportunity to offer a suspension alignment with a service or when you install new tires on a bike, and as a customer, you can finally ask for one. You get an alignment when you install new tires on your car or truck right? Why wouldn’t you get an alignment on your motorcycle? Hell! You only have two wheels! How important is it to you to make sure they’re properly aligned? Mike Fahey, owner/operator of Grumpy’s Motorcycles, located at 797 San Bruno Ave East in San Bruno is the first shop to own the Straight Shooter. Call Grumpy’s if your motorcycle has any ride quality or handling issues and let him and the Straight Shooter find the problem for you. Customers feel better leaving Grumpy’s knowing they didn’t have to pay two hours labor for diagnostics, there was no guess work. The Straight Shooter can show exactly where the problem is. by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: It’s been a busy summer so far. At the end of June my wife and I went to Idaho for “Bring Bowe Back” day in Hailey. My regular readers are well aware that Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl is America’s known Prisoner of War in Afghanistan and was captured on June 30, 2009. The event in Hailey was meant to raise attention to Bowe’s plight and urge the government to do everything in their power to bring him home. It was covered by most of the major networks including the BBC. Bowe’s father Bob delivered a special message for his son in Pashto, the native dialect of the area where his son is being held. He had recently received confirmation that his son is still alive. Jani Bergdahl, Bowe’s mother, made a heartfelt plea for the return of her son and both parents reaffirmed neither they nor the country would abandon Bowe. Negotiations between the United States, Afghanistan and the Taliban were announced the same week and at this writing are ongoing in Doha, Qatar. The Taliban are very willing to let Bowe come home in exchange for a few prisoners being held in Guantanamo. The U.S. is not quite so eager because of political implications of releasing prisoners to go back to Afghanistan even though the U.S. has done so in the past without trading for any Americans. Please keep Bowe Bergdahl in your prayers and hope the government makes the right decision and he comes home soon. Every year they plant a tree in Hop Porter Park to mark another year of captivity for Bowe. Bob Bergdahl smoothed the dirt around the base of a forth tree. Let’s hope this is the last tree that will be planted in Hailey to mark a year of captivity for Bowe Bergdahl. I want to tell you about an upcoming ride to benefit Operation Stand Down Nashville, Inc. (OSDN). This wonderful organization helps veterans make the transition from the military to civilian life and picks them up when they fall off the path of life. There will be a 3rd annual Boots

Ride to benefit OSDN on Sunday, August 25th, registration 8:30 at Cool Springs Harley Davidson, kick stands up at 10am. The ride will go down the Natchez Trace to Hohenwald with lunch at the River Rat. Cost is $20 which includes a goodie bag with lots of great stuff and a ride patch. OSDN is a 365 day a year non-profit veteran service center in Nashville with an employment department, veteran counselors, a transitional housing program, computer training, environmental training and more. All proceeds benefit veterans through Operation Stand Down Nashville. You can pre-register or make a donation by calling 615-248-1981 and asking for Rick or J.C. (I hear there may be a special raffle supported by Heroes Vodka) Later this year OSDN will hold its 21st annual event October 18th, 19th and 20th to bring homeless veterans off the street and give them a respite of assistance, support and resources to rejoin society. Lastly, I would like to pay a short tribute to a rough old cob and biker who passed away July 5, 2013. Thomas Evans Fetz was better known in the biker community as Saucerhead. He grew up hard, did things his way, wouldn’t accept second best and stood his ground no matter what the consequences. He was as wild and unchained as they come most of his life but lived, breathed and bled Harley Davidson. He could take one apart in his sleep and do things to a motorcycle that would unleash a fire breathing dragon. Years of riding hard tails left Saucerhead with some disabilities and started a process that took him on to the next life at a relatively early age. In a time of political correctness and unbridled whining this was one biker who stood out for looking you straight in the eye, telling you exactly what was on his mind, where his feet were planted and if you didn’t like it a little blood, teeth and hair would hit the floor without much hesitation. To my biker brother Saucerhead; Ride easy in the heavens, your pain is gone and there’s no one left to fight. May you find eternal peace at the big party! Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog

The Return of the H We have all heard it said before - the economy is too bad for people to ride, or people are just too broke to come out to events…blah, de blah blah. That whole notion was turned upside down as thousands of bikers rumbled into Hollister over Independence weekend! I guess that all those bikers must have got tired of sitting on their thumbs. THE RALLY WAS BACK and it was off the hook!! Local area news reports claimed that over 60,000 showed up for the return of this historical event. We were told it was better than the 1997 rally and did so with record numbers. Many volunteers and non-profits worked very hard to pull this off as the vote came down very late in the game and the event was approved by the city council. Mark Cresswell of World Wide Dynamics came in as the rally director and miraculously was able to pull this together (not without some unexpected resistance) in a very short time. Mark Cresswell deserves a HUGE amount of respect for the job he did for Hollister. And kudos to “Hollister” Christy Howe who worked endlessly - night and day to spread excitement and the word via social media. Deb Taylor of Hollister’s Chamber of Commerce and the local businesses also worked very hard to support the World Wide Dynamics staff to insure that this much needed event happened. The local Sheriff Department and the City Council also need to be commended on their fine work supporting their local business community by working with the event instead of against it. And certainly helmets off to Mike Corbin who has kept bikers coming to Hollister over the last five years to his customer appreciation rally during the absence of the downtown rally. His efforts should be recognized by all bikers and the local business community as they all benefited in some way from this effort. We arrived on the 4th of July and we never saw any problems all weekend. In fact, the police departments approach was not overbearing and confrontational which I believe set the tone. It’s pretty simple really, it’s human nature to push back if pushed; and if all of that is eliminated up front everybody can enjoy their event. We were running our butts all over, and we are thrilled to report that what we saw were tons of peeps having a great time! Since this was a motorcycle and music festival, there were stages set up all over and live music was playing up and down San Benito Street. There were more bands indoors at the Veterans Building which was also the venue for the Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal, Miss Hollister 2013 Bikini Contest hosted by Biker Bob and Amber of Racey Promotions. Hollister local, Ashley was the overall favorite – as a result, Ashley is this month’s cover model. Congratulations Ashley! San Benito Street was full of bikes as it was for motorcycle parking only! This made for some great sights and sounds. Nothing is better than the roar of hundreds of bikes in one place, music to my ears! The AMD Custom Bike Show was a huge draw as it brought some of the best custom bikes in the world here to compete. Just so happens that a lot of the world’s best builders are right here in Northern Cali! Johnny’s Bar and Grill is ground zero for this event. It was here that the beginning of what we all now know as a biker rally happened after a few World War II vets got together to have a bit of fun and blow some steam off back in 1947 and unknowingly made Hollister – The Birthplace of the American Biker. And so it began, biker traditions were born and a whole lifestyle that appeals to all bikers emerged. Living life at full throttle and not nesasserly adhering to the social norms of the day. If we think about it not much has changed really, there is still a lot of patriotic vets in this crowd and freedom loving wind in our face good hearted Americans who still hold being respectful of one and other in very high esteem. By all accounts, this was a very successful event and we for one can’t wait until next year! We are already making plans and the event just ended. So if you were among the few that may have missed this year’s Hollister Rally, you better start making plans for

EMISSIONS TESTING NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR MOTORCYCLES

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has dropped its requirement that Phoenix-area motorcycles undergo annual emissions inspections, the last place in the country to require such testing. The federal agency has approved a request from state environmental officials in Arizona that motorcycle tests be discontinued, effective immediately. The request to drop the testing requirement came in response to a 2008 state law requiring the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to do an analysis of pollutants emitted by motorcycles and make a proposal to the federal agency. “Our analysis has determined that the cost and inconvenience is not providing a significant environmental benefit,” said Trevor Baggiore, deputy director of air quality at ADEQ. Even though motorcycles account for 3.5% of vehicles on the area’s roads, the department’s analysis determined that they emit “insignificant” amounts of pollution, accounting for less than 1% of total emissions in the Phoenix metro area. Pima County (Tucson) and Maricopa County (Phoenix) were the only areas in the United States that required motorcycles to pass yearly emissions inspections at a cost of $19 per test, and Pima County halted motorcycle testing in 2007. Congratulations to ABATE of Arizona, the MMA of Arizona and the Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC) for their years of stalwart efforts to relieve Grand Canyon State riders of these unnecessary costs and burdensome time wasted in long lines. ANTI-ABORTION MEASURE RIDES MOTORCYCLE BILL THROUGH N.C. HOUSE

In controversial political maneuvering, the Republican-controlled North Carolina House recently pushed through anti-abortion legislation, using as their vehicle a motorcycle safety bill that lawmakers had stealthily gutted and turned into a measure to further regulate abortion clinics. Republicans introduced the legislation (S.B. 353) in the House Judiciary Committee the previous morning by attaching the abortion provisions to a motorcycle safety bill -- without first notifying either the public or their Democratic colleagues. “This bill came hurriedly through the Senate, rerouted through the House on a motorcycle,” lamented state Rep. Alma Adams (D). “No input from stakeholders, no public scrutiny, no transparency, no fiscal note.” The final vote was 74-41 on July 13; the bill now heads back to the GOP-led state Senate for approval, then on to Governor Pat McCrory (R) who says he will sign the measure into law if it reaches his desk. GUAM ENACTS “LIMITED HELMET LAW”

Originally, Senator Tommy Morrison’s bill called for universal helmet use for all motorcycle riders in the U.S. protectorate of Guam, but the revised version of his proposed helmet law makes it mandatory only for riders under the age of 18 and for those with less than 3 years riding experience. After a lengthy public hearing and receiving input from the community, Bill No. 87 “Limited Helmet Law” passed unanimously, and also requires new riders to first complete a defensive driving/motorcycle safety education course prior to being licensed and prohibits licensees from operating a motorcycle or scooter of larger engine 32

AMENDED HELMET LAW HAS POSITIVE ECONOMIC BENEFIT IN MICHIGAN

Changes last year in Michigan’s mandatory helmet law have had a positive effect on motorcycle riding in Michigan, according to ABATE of Michigan. There has been an increase in motorcycle travel in Michigan since April of 2012, said ABATE in a recent press release. “Motorcycle tourism is up. Motorcyclists across the country are coming to Michigan in droves. Very few out-of-state motorcyclists were seen in Michigan before the adult helmet requirement was modified,” according to ABATE. “Cyclists from across the country are discovering the beauty of the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan. There is an increase of out-of-state participation in Michigan motorcycle events by as much as five times during the summer of 2012.” “Our members have reported an increase in motorcycle tourism since the enactment of the rider choice law,” added Scott Ellis, executive director of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, which represents more than 1,800 restaurant, bar, party store, hotel and casino establishments across the state. “From Monroe to Muskegon to the Keweenaw Peninsula, more out-of-state motorcyclists are stopping, staying and spending money at our restaurants, hotels and attractions,” he told the Midland Daily News. Motorcycle sales also are up in Michigan, and ABATE says that 2012 was the safest riding season in 10 years for licensed motorcyclists in the state. MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINTS IN NEW YORK NET NEARLY A HUNDRED TICKETS

More than 80 motorcyclists and their vehicles were checked by specially-trained State Police motorcycle inspectors near Buffalo, NY in mid-June, with two checkpoints resulting in the issuance of 92 traffic tickets for offenses that included helmet and equipment violations. New York has been the epicenter for the Motorcycle-Only Checkpoint debate, which has resulted in four states; New Hampshire, North Carolina, Virginia and California, passing laws to prohibit law enforcement agencies from establishing motorcycle-only checkpoints. In addition, on the federal level Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced H.R. 1861 “To stop motorcycle checkpoint funding,” and also contains language “to force the DOT to focus motorcycle safety efforts on crash prevention programs, not national helmet mandates.” MOTORCYCLE CLUB SUES CITY OVER DISCRIMINATION

A local motorcycle club said it was just doing things by the book when it filed a permit to hold a BBQ fundraiser at a local park in Rio Vista, California, but the city and the police chief turned that simple request down. Now, the motorcycle club is filing suit, claiming it was discriminated against. “No one other than us has ever tried to put in a permit,” Saxon Creed MC President Rob Anderson told News 10/KXTV. “We thought we were doing the right thing.” Last July, the club wanted to hold its fundraising pig roast at Blackwelder Park, the same park where dozens of other community events have been held. So, the group filed for a permit with the city. But, the request was declined by the police chief and the city. The group held their pig roast this year without problems at a Veteran’s Hall, right next door to the park they applied to last year.

Members of Saxon Creed MC say they feel like the request was AIM-2622-F-Ad for Tennessee.indd 1 denied because they are bikers. The group has filed a discrimination lawsuit, claiming its civil rights were violated. They’re suing for $250,000 in damages on behalf of their 15 members. “It makes me very angry,” Anderson said. “This is America. We all have rights. I don’t like seeing anyone’s rights trampled on.” MAN ON A MISSION

“This will be the most important thing I have ever done.” says Tim King, founder and news editor of Salem-News.com, in regard to his scheduled 48-state motorcycle ride for Veterans. “I am riding 48 states this summer to educate Vets through talks and media appearances about health issues that are taking lives; we’re talking about PTSD/TBI, Agent Orange and the effects of serving aboard toxic military bases.” A former Marine who has covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Tim and his wife Bonnie received the NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Media in 2011 for advocating on behalf of motorcycle clubs and riders and their civil rights, and they have also been recognized by the Oregon Confederation of Clubs for Excellence in Journalism. Tim is riding thousands of miles to share the information he has accumulated over his journalism career and nine specific years reporting for Salem-News.com and he’s doing it by himself, so your help can make Tim’s trip safer and more effective. Tim’s covering an ongoing war here at home where Veterans are fighting for their rights, and he’ll be checking in with motorcycle riders who are busy defending their civil rights in regard to club membership and other issues, so he’s enlisting the support of the motorcycle community to publicize and help fund his mission. Along the way he’ll be writing stories and posting photos and videos of the places and people he visits, and you’ll be able to track his progress at Salem-News.com and also via this dedicated Facebook page at www. facebook.com/tim.king.146612?ref=tn_tnmn. VERTICAL MOTORCYCLE LICENSE PLATE BILL CLEARS PA HOUSE

Legislation allowing the vertical display of registration plates on motorcycles was recently passed by the state House and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

of the Pennsylvania Code require horizontal mounting of vehicle reg11/1/11 5:06 PM istration plates and do not give the option for vertical mounting.” HB 1060 would also “authorize the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to produce, upon request, registration plates for motorcycles which display the identifying characters in a vertical alignment.” “Owners of custom-made or vintage motorcycles are sometimes reluctant to mount the registration plate horizontally on the rear fender because doing so interferes with the custom paint job or other custom work done on the cycle,” according to Keller. “Many of these owners have approached ABATE of Pennsylvania, the motorcycle advocacy group, about making this legislative change, and ABATE supports my legislation.” MORE RULES PROPOSED FOR CANADIAN RIDERS

Saskatchewan is considering more requirements for new motorcycle licensees, supervision for new riders and the possibility of mandatory gear. The ideas are among more than a dozen changes to motorcycle safety, training and insurance rules proposed by Saskatchewan Government Insurance as it looks for ways to reduce claims, save money and quell the roar of angry riders. One suggestion is for potential riders to pass a basic skills test or complete a motorcycle training program before they’re issued a learner’s license. New riders who don’t take the training courses could see an additional $500 a year fee or be restricted on the size of the bike they use. Helmets and eye protection are currently the law in Saskatchewan and similar rules apply across the country, but no other jurisdiction in Canada has mandatory rules for wearing gloves, ankle-covering boots or clothing that cover arms and legs, according to SGI. The review was launched earlier this year after a proposed rate increase which would have seen insurance costs for motorcycles go up by an average of 73% to cover a $9 million gap between what SGI takes in from motorcyclists in fees versus what is paid out for collisions. The public has until the end of July to comment on the proposals and SGI is to report to the government in the fall. The goal is to have the new rules in place for next year’s riding season.

A State Trooper was patrolling late at night off the main highway. At nearly midnight, he sees a couple in a car, in lovers’ lane, with the interior light brightly glowing. He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine. He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the trooper walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window. The young man lowers his window. ‘Uh, yes, Officer’? The trooper asks: ‘What are you doing?’ The young man says: ‘Well, Officer, I’m reading a magazine.’ Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat the trooper says: ‘And, her, what is she doing?’ The young man shrugs: ‘Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails.’ Now, the trooper is totally confused. A young couple, alone, in a car, at night in a lover’s lane and nothing inappropriate is happening! The trooper asks: ‘What’s your age, young man?’ The young man says: ‘I’m 22, sir.’ The trooper asks: ‘And her, what’s her age?’ The young man looks at his watch and replies: ‘She’ll be 18 in exactly 11 minutes.” 1. I had sex with Nookie Green twice last month.’ The priest told the sinner, ‘You are forgiven. Go out and say three Hail Mary’s. ’Soon thereafter, another Irish man entered the confessional. ‘Father, it has been two months since my last confession. I’ve had sex with Nookie Green twice a week for the past two months.’ This time, the priest questioned, ‘Who is this Nookie Green?’ ‘A new woman in the neighborhood,’ the sinner replied. Very well,’ sighed the priest. Go and say ten Hail Mary’s. At mass the next morning, as the priest prepared to deliver the sermon, a tall, voluptuous, drop-dead gorgeous redheaded woman entered the Sanctuary. The eyes of every man in the church fell upon her as she slowly sashayed up the aisle and sat down right in front of the priest. Her dress was green and very short, and she wore matching, shiny emerald-green shoes. The priest and the altar boy gasped as the woman in the green dress and matching emerald-green shoes sat with her legs spread slightly apart, but just enough to realize that one could see all the way to the junction of O my goodness and O my gosh! The priest turned to the altar boy and whispered, ‘Oh, sweet Lord, Is that Nookie Green?’ The bug-eyed altar boy couldn’t believe his ears, but managed to calmly reply, ‘No Father, I think it’s just a reflection from her shoes.”

arty and Michelle Sutherland do not own or ride a motorcycle. But you will never see or hear of either of them backing down from a chance to support the biker community when it comes to a charity event. They will gladly open their hearts and their bar, Sling Shots Sports Bar in Madison, and welcome all riders and enthusiasts from all walks of life. This was certainly the case on Saturday, May 25th. The bikes started rolling in at 10:30am. Michelle always has a welcome beverage available to enjoy while registering for her event. On that day we were riding for John Cain who needs a bone marrow transplant at a cost of $100,000. On her kick off day of May 4, Michelle and Marty raised $30,000 but could not have the poker run due to bad weather. I’m actually glad in a kind of selfish way that they didn’t as I was out of town and could not participate. So on May 25th, I had the honor of escorting the run and dealing the cards for the draw at each stop. We rolled out of Sling Shots at noon and headed for Slow and Low B-B-Q Bistro owned by Marty’s brother, Trey Southerland for the first card draw. From there we had a beautiful ride up River Road to The V-Tavern August 2013

& Café where we were met by the owner Vernon with fried hot dogs. That was a first for me but a delicious discovery. From there our next stop would be at Friends in Joelton. Then we were off to Val’s Place on Dickerson road, then Skully’s Saloon in Old Hickory where Miss Rosie Rose met us with a cold brew and a big hug. Then it was back to Sling Shots for the final card draw and the awards presentation. Best hand went to Jennifer and worst hand went to Dave. Appreciation plaques were presented to each bar for their participation and generous hospitality. Many thanks to the bar owners for their support and to all those who rode with us that day. Even though I could not ride Gracie due to doctors orders, I truly enjoyed the view from the back of the pack in Michelle’s Lexus, with the top down and the wind in my hair (she insisted since I could not ride) as I watched 27 bikes stretch out in front of me in perfect formation. It was a gloriously beautiful day with bright blue skies and a perfect temperature. Once again, Marty and Michelle stepped up to the plate in full force to help a person in great need of assistance. Speaking for the biker community, we are so blessed to have these 2 loving and so very kind non bikers on our side and always in their hearts. As of now, they have raised $39,600 for John Cain. All I can say is AN OUTSTANDING JOB WELL DONE!! You two are truly amazing!!
