Lordy, Lordy, how we are tested sometimes. I have been a virtual bitch today with a capital B and yet, I sit here and am thankful that I still have enough piss & vinegar in me to be a bitch. LOL We all have days when it just feels like everything is in alignment for the shit to keep hitting the fan, ALL DAY LONG! Like Brian says…….”Let Me Up”. But it’s 9pm and we’re getting ready to send the mag to the printer and this Letter From the Editor that I’ve started and stopped on for 3 days in a row is finally coming to fruition and I just stopped, took (3) long breaths and exhaled slowly (learned this from Dr. Oz) and it virtually makes all the difference in the world. I can literally feel my body relaxing, my mind re-focusing, my pulse slowing and becoming normal. It’s amazing how 3 deep breaths can change everything. Our world is on Fast-Forward all the time, now. And, while I do love technology; especially in our line of work, sometimes I just wonder what it’s going to change us into in the next (5) years. We’re just so stressed out and maxed out and literally at least 25 multi-tasks needing to be done at the same time……I think I’m going to go back to Yoga. I did it when I was pregnant and WoW!, did it ever change my life. But then a faster life got in the way and I moved so fast to keep up, it got left behind. Going to change that. Going back to what I know works; yoga & meditation

Our daughter, “Biskit” is going in for the “sleeve surgery” and I cry when I think of how this is going to change her life. She has tried to come to terms but end up defeated since she was 13. She’s 5’7” so she carries the weight pretty well but she’s also 320 and while it’s like $24k for just the surgery here, just the basic, not counting anesthesiologist, operating room, follow-up care, it’s $8k in Mexico. So, that’s where she’s going (with accompaniment) but what does that say about our healthcare system that she has worked for a major corporation, one of the Fortune 500 for ten years and they denied her request for surgery? Instead of looking at it as long-term maintenance in a valued employee, they just say “nope, it’s cosmetic surgery and not covered”. Our daughter will be dead by the age of 30 if she doesn’t get this surgery; her ankles will collapse, her knee caps will blow out, her discs will deteriorate and all they can say is, “nope, not covered”. I apologize but I just have to throw down a big Bullshit! on that! It’s not a health-care system, but it is a system alright….kinda like the system in Vegas. Shoot your wad and walk away with jack. Pray for Biskit, please, my sisters & brothers. We love America and its’ people. That will never change. We love you bikers. toni & brian

O
Years of Freedom!
ver the Labor Day weekend, 120,000 Harleys roared into Milwaukee for a love fest with the Motor Company. The party kicked off at the Summerfest grounds, where more than 60 bands would perform during the celebration. Lynyrd Sknyrd headlined for HOG members only, followed by Doobie Brothers, Bret Michaels, and 9 other artists.
Each night, a headline artist rocked the Marcus Amphitheater: Toby Keith, Aerosmith, and Kid Rock. There was an additional charge to see these performers. The press was not allowed to photograph, during these performances, so the included photos are courtesy of Harley-Davidson. Besides the Summerfest Grounds, the most popular place to be was the H-D Museum. The through the years collection of Harleys is spectacular! Also, there is a Night Train that washed up on Graham Island, Canada, on April 18, 2012, after traveling through the Pacific Ocean from the tsunami in Japan, March 11, 2011. It was not cleaned up or restored and is slowly rusting away. Also on display is the original concept drawing for a new riding club-HOG, and a bike, with sidecar, signed by all of the H-D employees for the 100th Anniversary. There are displays of tanks (my favorite was a bright red with a simple chrome logo from 1951) and engines over the years, as well as board track racers, hill climbers, and even one of Evil Knevel’s jump bikes. One could spend many hours touring the museum. Parked out front 10

was the Timeline Motorcycle, pictured with its builder Steve “Doc” Hopkins, owner of Doc’s Harley Davidson of Shawano County, WI. It is powered by 7 motors: F-Head, Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution Blockhead, and Twin Cam, totaling 538 cubic inches. It is 24.5 feet long and seats 10 people. Its paint depicts Harleys through the years. Doc told me it runs and can be seen on his website, wwwDOCSHD.com. Friday afternoon, Keith Wandell, Harley CEO, revved a Harley to close the NY Stock Exchange, to the cheers of the Board of Directors, joining him on stage, and the crowd at the museum. Would have been even better if the stock had closed higher. On Saturday morning, spectators begin lining the streets early for the Parade. At 10 am, the roar of 6,000 Harleys (including Willie G and Nancy) takes an hour to pass a given spot, on the sidewalk. Some riders carried the HOG chapter flags, one has 110 American Flags, and many dressed in costume. Arguably, the best costume was from Taiwan, with a larger than life cartoon character, complete with waving arms, accompanied by a troupe of riders in fearsome face paint. Batman and Robin made the ride, as did a large group from Mexico, in large black sombreros, naturally with orange trim. The Powertrain Plant was open for tours and the lines were long, as the Harley owners wanted to see how the heart of their beast was made to beat. The plant is automated, so

that a 110 may follow a 96, which follows a 103, down the line. The parts seem to flow so that they all fit together into the proper engine. Harley hosted an Invitational Custom Bike Show. Strangely enough, it was won by a Honda. Personally, I preferred the Firehouse, but no one asked me. All of the area dealers had events going on. Milwaukee Harley was especially popular with its adult themed body painted ladies, mud wrestling, and wet t-shirt contests. There was too much to see and do in a weekend. Block parties every night, UFC fights, skill riding competition, Iron Elite Black Biker Jam, Women of Harley Unite!, Casa De Harley, and, did I mention, over 60 bands! What a blast! There was way more than any person could do. Too bad we have to wait five more years to go to the big show again. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

Hollister Rally Approved for Next 10 Years
Hollister, CA - "The City Council members sent a roaring message to the motorcycle community that officials plan to hold a downtown rally for the next 10 years, even if city politics change" stated rally manager and CEO of World Dynamics Mark Cresswell. The 2013 Hollister motorcycle rally - the city's signature tradition - was the first in five years after shaky finances caused prior cancellations. Interim City Manager Bill Avera mentioned there would be an early termination clause in any rally contracts, while he also noted that next year's rally will be over three days, as opposed to the two days for the 2013 revival. "Most important, it lets people know we are committed to this and will allow us to bring in major sponsorships," Avera concluded. The officially sanctioned biker rally started in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boozefighters' famed "invasion" of Hollister that inspired the Marlon Brando movie, "The Wild One." Mike Corbin sends his personal thanks to the thousands of riders that showed up for supporting Corbin in their efforts to keep Independence Day alive in Hollister. "I promise you next year will be even bigger and better so plan ahead and you may be surprised to hear that we're making our Annual Rider Appreciation Day 3 days also to coincide with the Hollister Rally", Corbin stated. Official Rally and Corbin Rider Appreciation Days are July 4-6th, 2014! This year, Corbin had a wide variety of motorcycle aftermarket manufacturers set up on Corbin’s lot as well as live entertainment, a bike show, food of all kinds free factory tours throughout the day and offered a 10% event discount and free installation to everyone that attended the rally which caused a traffic jam of bikes getting custom seats tailor made to fit their bikes and bodies.

Boswell’s 1st Annual
RENDEZVOUS
B
oswell’s Harley Davidson held a Rendezvous of the HOG Chapters from all four of its locations August 1st through the 3rd. Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse in Monteagle hosted the 250 attendees, with great food and music, throughout the event. J.D. and Betsy Oliver went out of their way to provide a memorable time for all the HOG’s. So much of a good time was had, that the rooms, at the Smokehouse are almost sold out for the same weekend’s gathering next year. This was a good opportunity to get to know the HOG members from the various dealerships. Although there was much good entertainment Elle and the Highnotes, normally heard at the Music City Smokehouse, on Hermitage Avenue in Nashville were the highlight. Elle works up a sweat belting out the tunes! One wonders how she gets so much heart and sound out of such a small package. Bubba Boswell lead a ride of approximately 60 bikes to Russell Cave National Monument and then on to Lookout Mountain, including a stop at Point Park. The views are spectacular. The bikers were entertained by the cannon firing at the Park. The roads are curvy, making excellent riding. A light rain did little to dampen the spirits of the riders. The Russell Cave was used by the Native Americans for shelter. Displays are set up to show the inhabitants lifestyle, with the abundant water supply to the safe haven of the cave. Betsy Boswell worked hard to coordinate the event and it come off without a hitch. The attendees are looking forward to the next year’s Rendezvous! Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

Riding WiTh BikeR Belles Article and Photos by: “T”

As the morning sun rose above the South Dakota valley known as Sturgis, I heard hundreds of motorcycles firing up for their day’s adventure. I reflected on how motorcycling has evolved in the past 73 years since Sturgis Motorcycle Rally began. From lumbering, little to no suspension work horses, the motorcycle has evolved into as comfortable a ride as could be found. For most, the ride to Sturgis has become a much more relaxed journey than that of the years of the no suspension, hard-tails scooting up the dirt roads and highways to the Worlds’ largest gathering of bikes and riders. Not only have the motorcycles made some major changes, the riders have as well. 42 28
In the past few years, there’s been a major change in who is riding these iron steeds. Women have been the largest and fastest growing rider group the motorcycling industry has ever experienced. In the past ten years, women have made up for a large percentage of the new riders on the highways. Yet, still, they are a minority ride group. While many of them are taking the handlebars themselves and riding their own, many others are enjoying riding on the back seat. It was from the first jump off the concrete block at 5 years old, onto my small, pull-start minibike, that I acquired my first feel of the freedom to ride. There’s really nothing to compare with the
feeling of two wheels and rumbling motor beneath me. For the past 40 some years, I’ve ridden my own. I’ve enjoyed off road and street riding. In my planning for the Sturgis 2013 trip, I registered for a women’s ride in Sturgis, The Biker Belles Ride. This ride is advertised as a “celebration of women in motorcycling”. Their mission statement reads: “The Biker Belles was created by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip for two complementary purposes. The first is to raise awareness of the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motorcycling, celebrating the woman’s role in shaping the culture, art and history of motorcycling. The second is to

use this event to raise funds for worthy local charities that would be of particular interest to these very women.” While I’ve been able to create Oklahoma’s largest women only ride for much the same reasons, (Women’s Ride Day Ride 2013, Tulsa) with over 120 women registered this year, I’ve never ridden in a women’s ride in any other state. As I left Sturgis that morning headed to Deadwood where the ride began, I was nearly giggly with anticipation of this wonderful day. Upon arrival atop the mountainous Deadwood Lodge Resort high above Deadwood, I could see that many women had already arrived and their license plates read from all over the 50 states and Canada. Inside, I met up with Cris Sommer-Simmons, a female rider who’s been a three time Hall of Fame inductee. She is the wife of Doobie Brothers Guitarist, Pat Simmons. They met in Sturgis and as she described it, “he needed a ride to eat after the concert, I gave him one and after breakfast at 1am in Sturgis, I never left his side.” Laura Klock, Vice President/Owner Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, met me with her larger than life smile. A beautiful lady rider who was the first mother-daughter-daughter trio in history to all hold land speed records at one time. Laura first set the World’s Fastest Bagger AMA National Land Speed Record in 2006. On this ride day, her smile was probably so large because her charity, Helping With Horsepower, was one of the benificiaries for the days ride. Her charity empowers and encourages young women through hands on projects and raises funds for worthy charities. Her passion for what she does shines through her smile. See more on her charity at www.helpingwithhorsepower.com.

Jessi Combs, television host All Girl’s Garage, donated her Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson 2013 Softail Slim to the Belle Riders auction. She explained that she customized this bike to be appealing to man or woman. She built it to be a “low, Sexy Long Bike”. From it’s beautiful brown and Cadillac white paint to the hand tooled seat done by Jessi herself, this bike was all that and more. Next, I experienced a wonderful symposium of some of the industry’s most powerful women including, Laura, Jessi and Cris along with Shelly October 2013

Rossmeyer, Vicki RobertsSanfelipo, Tigra Tsujikawa, Trish of Baker Transmission and celebrity rider, Kristy Swanson. A special appearance was made by Motor Maids Matriarch, Gloria Struck who has been riding over 71 years. She started at 16 years old. A simply beautiful woman who still rides hers to Sturgis! It was now time for the ride. I was thrilled to ride with women from across the nation who rode fast and hard through the sweeping twists and turns of South Dakota, Black Hills area. I was honored to ride alongside Mean Street Mary, Flash and many more. We were filmed throughout the ride by the moving film crews including the CMT film crew and famous photographer, Michael Lichter. I was quite saddened that Michael dropped and broke a camera just as he was about to shoot my bike, Lola, and I. A strange circumstance of which my newfound riding buddies teased me through the rest of the day. The finale of the Biker Belles Ride was highlighted by Pat Simmons buying the auction bike built by Jessi Combs for his wife Cris for their 24th wedding anniversary of same day! Jessi Combs and Shelly Rossmeyer were brought to tears by the transaction of the bike they’d donated. Over $36,000 was raised for the charities, Helping With Horsepower and Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

“WHY OUR CHURCH?”
Covenant Confirmers Ministries Inc. can claim the title of “The First Successful Biker Church” in the country. There are now currently over three hundred thousand “biker Churches” in America. I recently did an interview for Time Magazine regarding this new Church move in our country. There has been a lot of controversy over what goes on in our Church services and what we are about, so I would like to clear up all the rumors. When God first called me to start a “biker Church” all my minister friends suggested that I not do it, because they didn’t think the public would feel safe in a “biker atmosphere.” But one thing I have found out about God, He will always calls you to do the impossible; therefore man cannot take the credit for what only God can do! There are many testimonies that I could share with you regarding all the adversities that we ran into at first but God has overcome them all. First let me give you the really great news; “In the next two months we will have paid off our entire debt and our “Biker Church property,” we will be totally debt free! We now own an entire corner in downtown Springfield that is insured for over two million dollars. With the economy, the housing market and health care in decline, here is a bunch of bikers that have paid off their debt while other churches have gone under. We must be doing something right! We also have the “TN Biker Medical Clinic” a free clinic to bikers, and a free support group meeting every Monday night. We have two custom motorcycles on the stage along with a chopper front end as our pulpit. When it’s time to 32
start the service, we start up the motorcycles; those are our church bells that signal the start of service. We don’t do normal church music, we have bands that play gospel rock, southern rock and blues gospel, there’s also a light show with a fog machine going. This is a church you can ride your motorcycles to and wear your blue jeans & leathers. God is interested in what’s in your heart more then what’s on your back. Most bikers know that I am Pastor & Chaplain to a lot of the secular clubs in Tennessee and several other states, but our Church is not limited just to Patch Holders, everybody is welcome, the weekend warriors, probates, hangarounds, the new riders, all types of bikers and even the non-biker. Here you’ll find hope, acceptance, and meaning for your life. We do not put anybody down for their past lifestyles because we all have one, including myself. However we do not compromise the Word of God with anyone. We do not teach man’s denominational doctrines, everything we minister is straight from the Word of God. We are not your traditional church, but we are a part of the Body of Christ that is reaching the lost that will not go into a traditional church. I am very much aware that our Church is not for everybody, but if you’re reading this article, then you’re a good fit. Why don’t you just visit us sometime and see how God is working in biker’s lives just like yours. Visit our website then come see us, you’ll be glad you did! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

GHOULISHLY GOOD LASAGNA ROLL-UPS
1 Lb. of Ground Chuck 12 Cooked “al dente” Lasagna Noodles 4 Cloves of Garlic; minced 1 Tbls. of Parsley, Basil, Oregano & Italian Seasoning all mixed in a small bowl 1 Pinch of Nutmeg added to the above spices 1 Jar of your favorite Spaghetti Sauce 1 Pkg. (1 Lb.) of of Kraft Shredded Italian Five Cheese which has a touch of Philly Cream Cheese included 1 Can of Oregano & Basil Diced Tomatoes; drained 2 Large Eggs 1 Tub of Philadelphia Italian Herb Cooking Creme (in the butter refrigerated isle) 1 Cup of Grated Parmesan Cheese; divided Couple dashes of Worchesteshire sauce Preheat oven to 350 degrees Spray some butter spray in a large skillet and put in your room temperature ground beef. Break it up with a potato masher and also a wooden spoon. Kinda’ push it down a bit and even it out and then just let it brown really good before flipping over to do the same on other side. There’s so much flavor in meat when you get it nice and seared really brown. In another medium sized bowl, mix up your spaghetti sauce, tomatoes, and 1/2 of Parmesan cheese. Set aside and in another bowl mix up the scrambled eggs, cooking creme, shredded cheese (half the bag) and your spices mixture. In a 13x9 baking dish sprayed down with cooking spray, place a thin layer of the meat mixture down as a bed for the rolled noodles. Take each noodle and spread apprx. 3 Tbls. per noodle with cheese mixture; going the full length of the noodle. Gently roll up and place seam sides down in your bed of sauce. Top noodles generously with remaining sauce and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, cover the entire dish with the remaining 8 ozs. of shredded cheese and place back in oven until brown and bubbly. Serve with hot, crusty, Italian bread and parsley butter. Ghosts don’t count calories so eat up & enjoy! I adore spicey & sweet so this pie really hits me on all cylinders.

THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN’S BACON & BOURBON APPLE PIE
1/2 Cup of Packed Brown Sugar 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon 3/4 Cup Flour; divided 1/2 Stick Cold Butter; divided 10 Slices of Hickory Smoked Bacon cooked crisp but not burned 1 Pre-Made Pie Crust 6 Cups of Golden Delicious Apples; cored, peeled & sliced (6 cups = 6 large apples) Invest in an apple corer; they’re inexpensive and very useful. 3/4 Cup of Granulated Sugar or Splenda 2 Tbls. of Bourbon or a splash more 1 tsp. of pure Vanilla Preheat oven to 400 degrees Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and 1/2 cup of the flour in medium bowl. If you have a pastry cutter, cut half the butter into mix. If not, just use two butter knives and criss-cross cutting the butter into the mixture until resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in rough chopped bacon. Place crust in 9 inch pie plate. Put apples in large bowl and add granulated sugar or baking Splenda, remaining flour, bourbon and vanilla; mix lightly but thoroughly. Spoon into crust. Take remaining butter and cut into small dabs and place all around the pie; the more the better. Let’s face it, if you’re going to eat a decadent dessert, why worry about the damn butter? Am I right? Cover with crumb topping and place on baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce oven down to 350 and bake another 30 minutes. Cool slightly but still toasty warm with homemade brand of your favorite vanilla ice-cream. This is without a doubt such an easy recipe and it will make you slap somebody upside the head it’s that dang good. Ichabod Crane actually put his head back on just so he could eat this dang pie! WooHoo!! * You can substitute for other brands of apples but the Golden Delicious holds up well in cooking as does the Granny Smith, but they tend to be a tad tart so might need extra sugar. Could also serve with homemade whipped cream, but not that tub stuff. If you don’t make your own, use the quality extra creamy spray can kind.

Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: When you think of veterans riding motorcycles what organizations do you think of first? There are many out there. Some large, some small, some national and some local. All are very welcoming to veteran riders and all do great things for selfless reasons. The one I would like to highlight this month is the American Legion Riders. The American Legion Riders were the idea of two veteran members of the American Legion, Chuck “Tramp” Dare and Bill “Polka” Kaledas. In 1993 they organized a motorcycle enthusiast group at Legion Post 396 in Garden City, Michigan. They took their idea up the chain of command and the idea caught fire. It wasn’t long before Legion Posts around the country were starting their own “Legion riders” chapters. There are now over 106,000 American Legion Riders who meet in over a thousand Legion chapters and at least three foreign countries. This organization has continued to grow and raise money for many causes like children’s hospitals, schools, veteran’s homes, wounded service members and scholarships. In 2006 the Legion Riders created the Legacy Scholarship fund to provide scholarships to the children of U.S. military personnel killed since September 11, 2001. It is estimated that over 11,000 children have lost a parent in the war overseas. That number continues to grow each day even as we are drawing down the force in Afghanistan. To raise money for the Legacy Fund the riders do a national Legion Legacy Run. The eighth annual American Legion Legacy Run, sponsored by USAA, left Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 18 and traveled through Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma before ending up in League City, Texas, on August 22.
October 2013
The ride covered 1,500 miles in four days and raised a whopping $764,000. That doesn’t happen by accident. There is a lot of hard work and planning that go into such a successful ride. Next time you see a Legion Rider give him or her a big “Bro Hug” and a thank you for what they are doing for America’s veterans and their families. At the end of August I had the honor of speaking to the United Auto Workers National Veterans Conference at the Walter Reuther Family Center at Black Lake, Michigan. I spoke about the thousands of American service members who have been abandoned at the end of our country’s conflicts since World War II. While some of the veterans who attended were very familiar with the plight of Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl I was reminded that the majority of Americans don’t know we have a confirmed live American soldier in captivity today. October marks the 52nd month of captivity for Hailey, Idaho native Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. You may recall the Beaver Creek Fire that raged and burned over 108,000 acres in the vicinity of Hailey a few weeks ago. The fire not only burned some of the country’s prettiest wild forest but also devastated the local economy. Bowe’s mother and father spend what money they have telling the world about their captive son and doing their best to make sure he isn’t abandoned. The fire hit them especially hard. If you want to do something to help the Bergdahl’s you can make a donation to the “Bring Bowe Back Fund” at any U.S. Bank. Just tell the teller what you want to do, they can look it up and get your donation to the fund in Hailey. In September Bowe had a close call when a U.S. drone hit a meeting of Haqqani leadership, killing about 7 including the number 2 guy. Early reports made it sound like Bowe had also been injured or killed. Luckily he was not injured but I’m sure his parents were on needles and pins. It’s hard to imagine what 4 years of that must do to a family. We need to bring Bowe home. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog

Partners with Champion Bike Builder Dar Holdsworth Bike Company
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Singer, songwriter, entertainer and entrepreneur Toby Keith has taken his love of motorcycles to a new level as he partners with Brass Balls Cycles’ Dar Holdsworth as co-owner of the award-winning, Oklahoma Citybased custom/production bike builder. The partnership will be publicly announcedAugust 6 as Keith returns to headline the legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip Motorcycle Rally. Also at The Chip, Holdsworth and the Brass Balls team will be featured in a Bike Build-Off being filmed for CMT. The finished motorcycle will be given to a Vietnam vet at the conclusion of the event. “This partnership will help Brass Balls Cycles increase its U.S. market presence, as well as expand the brand internationally,” Holdsworth says. “We will be revealing new and revised models in the near future and, as 36
always, proudly power our bikes with American made S&S V-Twin motors.” A longtime motorcycling enthusiast (as depicted in his “American Ride” video), Keith met Holdsworth through the Pros 4 Vets organization. Earlier this year, Brass Balls Cycles built a custom bike that was raffled to support the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral project. About Toby Keith: Featured on the cover of the current issue of Forbes and named the highest-paid country performer of 2013, Keith is known for many successful ventures including his I Love This Bar And Grill restaurant chain, Wild Shot Mezcal and more. But his business acumen is secondary to his success as a music creator and performer. His latest single “Drinks After Work” is rocketing up the charts, and leads an upcoming album of new music. And his Hammer
Down Tour, Presented By Ford F-Series will continue to pack venues nationwide into the fall. About Dar Holdsworth: An Air Force veteran of Desert Storm, Holdsworth is a twotime AMD World Champion custom/production motorcycle builder who founded Brass Balls Cycles in 2006. The company specializes in timeless and uncompromising American motorcycles, offering a line of Bobbers, Choppers and Sport Cruisers.Passionately owned by Dar Holdsworth & Toby Keith. www.BrassBallsCycles.com

Dar Holdsworth has been a good friend who I’ve admired and watched take his bike building from learning the ropes and mastering the skills through good friends and due diligence, to moving up the ranks to a first place in 2012 in the AMD World Championship. celebration with this wonderful group of individuals. Dar doesn’t do this alone and he’s the first to give credit to those around him who have helped him along the way. From his lovely wife, Latrisha and their 3 children, to his builders in the shop, to those who have donated thousands of dollars worth of parts and labor to build the numerous veteran give- away bikes, he lets everyone know who helps him hoping, they too, will get a step up. I like that about Dar. He’s the kind of guy that would love to stand on the top platform, but doesn’t wish to stand there alone! His builds reflect his attention to detail. His compassion for others shows in the number of bikes he’s built for veterans and veteran charities. This is what attracted the attention of singer, songwriter, Toby Keith. I was one of a honored few media friends to enjoy a toast backstage in Sturgis with Toby Keith, Dar and the Brass Balls Cycles staff. (Toast consisted of Wild Shot Mexcal in Red Solo Cup, of course!) Toby commented that Brass Balls had first caught his eye when he was presented with a bike built by Dar on a vet project they were both involved. He went on to say that Dar’s Patriotism, honesty, drive and big heart combined with his “family comes first” spirit, drew him closer to the builder. Toby ThunderRoadsTennessee.com
observed the number of bikes Dar was building out of pocket to help others and felt that he may be able to help this Oklahoma City builder by partnering with him. After a few phone calls and visits to the shop, he and Dar were able to begin what looks to be a great partnership in the making. I can’t wait to see what their two great minds will create for all of us to enjoy! After the toast and an excellent concert by Toby, Dar was called on stage to present a bike to a veteran. This time it was the most special Vietnam veteran Dar knows, his own father. He has been his inspiration since 1985 when he adopted Dar from an orphanage and took him in as if his own flesh and blood. Dar followed in his footsteps by serving in the Air Force touring Desert Storm before his time in the military expired. The bike, shown here, was presented to his father and went on to win the build off the following day. What a great Sturgis trip for this builder and his company!

WEST TENNESSEE VALLEY RALLY 2013 BY MECHELE MACDANIEL
Mike Owen had a dream of creating a rally where people could come for a long weekend, hide their keys, blow off some steam, have a blast, and not worry about one single thing. They say the third time is a charm. Well it worked for Mike. This was one of the very best rallies that I have ever attended and the prices to get in are always the cheapest. The weather was perfect the entire time. The drive from Nashville through the valley’s and hills of Tennessee was absolutely beautiful. We arrived Friday afternoon, me, my BFF Dana, and our driver Tanna. The place was packed with tents of all shapes and sizes, campers, RV’s, motor homes, and of course tons of bikes. There were vendors of all kinds, a huge beer tent, a mechanical bull, and loads of entertainment. Friday evening featured the band Geneva, who totally rocked the rally, as this is her 10 year tour, followed by an after party at our camp site complete with coffin bar and dance pole. Saturday was filled with bike games, a poker run, and of course the bike show which I had the honor of helping judge along with Jim “Gravedigger” Robertson of United Cycles located in Jackson TN. Best paint went to none other than Jimmy Williams and his 07 HD Ultra Classic. Best Metric went to Scott Payne’s Blue Fury. Best American Made went to Bo Arnold and his Heritage Softail. Best Original went to Pat Veazey’s blue and white 77 Shovel Head. Best of show went to Brad Hossie and his 2013 Black Street Glide. Congratulations guys! Job well done. This year the trophies were Yager Bottles! Through out the day, the band Stormgate entertained us with some awesome tunes and after the bike show The Kimberlie Helton Band rocked our Saturday night! The after party of course was again at our camp site and we closed the evening and rally with a bang.

Thank you Doc Rick for the accommodations and for always being a wonderful host. Many thanks to all the great vendors and awesome bands. A special thanks to Mike & Barb Owen, Gary and all the crew for ANOTHER fantastic rally and for your hospitality to me, Dana, Tanna, and Thunder Roads Magazine. You did an amazing job of putting together a rally to remember and look forward to next year! Keep dreaming Mike!

Scottsdale motorcycle racer joins prestigious competitors club with a two way record of 201.02 mph Motorcyclist Valerie Thompson, a multiple land speed record holder becomes newest member of BUB Speed Trials ”201 MPH Club” at Bonneville Salt Flats. (Scottsdale, AZ) – September 10, 2013 –Valerie Thompson is a 5-Time Land Speed Record Holder and owner/driver of Valerie Thompson Racing (VTR). Valerie enjoyed a successful summer racing her CTEK Battery Chargers sponsored BMW S 1000 RR at two of the premiere land speed racing events on the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. Thompson’s first Bonneville competition was the 65th Annual Southern California Timing Association’s Speedweek event, held August 10-16. “We were plagued with electronic issues all week that kept us sidelined. With help from BMW Motorrad, Heads Up Performance, BMW of Utah and BMW of San Diego we made three runs on the last full day of competition with a top speed of 203 mph, to date, my fastest run on the Salt,” stated Thompson. The BUB Speed Trials, a motorcycle-only competition was held August 24 through 29 on the wind swept Salt Flats. Thompson became an official member of the BUB Speed Trials 201 MPH Club after posting a record two way average speed of 201.02 mph in the 1000cc MPS/AG class. Unfortunately, her record was surpassed later in the event “They say you don’t own a record, they are only on loan. It would have been nice if they loaned it to me for a bit longer” said a smiling Thompson “Thanks to Scott Horner, Bob Clark and Steve Davidson, our BMW was performing much better at BUB as soon as it rolledoff the trailer. Even with the strong winds I achieved a long-time goal of joining the BUB 201 MPH Club here on the Salt,” stated Thompson. “I’ve taken my BMW over 200 mph multiple times, but it was always on paved tracks. Exceeding 200 mph on the salt at Bonneville is extremely gratifying due to the difficulty to achieve those speeds on the irregular, unpredictable surface,” added Thompson. Thompson is also a member of the Mojave Magnum 200 MPH Club and Texas Mile 200 MPH Club. She set a personal best top speed of 212 mph on her BMW S 1000 RR during the March 2013 Texas Mile competition.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
“2 MILLION BIKERS TO DC” TRUMPS “MILLION MUSLIM MARCH”
A few dozen demonstrators attending a rally on the National Mall, once billed as the “Million Muslim March”, were vastly outnumbered by hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders from across America participating in the “2 Million Bikers to DC” ride to honor September 11 victims and to counter the pro-Muslim rally that many said was inappropriate for such a solemn day in U.S. history. The American Muslim Political Action Committee scheduled the rally to draw attention to what it said is an unfair and ongoing fear of Muslims after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Among the bikers, however, the provocatively scheduled rally was considered an insult to the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, 2001, when Islamic terrorists hijacked three commercial jets and crashed them into the World Trade Center buildings in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington. Another hijacked plane headed for Washington, D.C. crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Though the biker gathering fell short of 2 million strong, some estimates ran as high as 880,000 riders, and “What began as an idea on Facebook quickly turned into a national movement thanks to social media and dedicated bikers from around the nation,” wrote the Examiner.com; and as bikers from as far away as the west coast began their journey to D.C., Twitter lit up with photos and videos showing thousands of bikes overflowing out of rest stops and parking lots as the hastily organized ride gained momentum. So many turned out that plans to have them ride through the streets of the Capital had to be changed, particularly in light of the fact that local authorities denied a permit that would have provided the riders a police escort through traffic -- a sore spot with organizers who believe the denial was for political purposes. “We didn’t need a permit in the first place,” National Event Organizer Belinda Bee told a local Fox News station, citing D.C. law; “it shall not be an offense to assemble or parade on a District street, sidewalk, or other public way, or in a District park, without having provided notice or obtained an approved assembly plan.” So the event went on -- legally -- without the permit, although the group apologized to the public that “What could have been a one or two hour ride through” tied up Beltway traffic from early morning into the afternoon. Co-founders Belinda Bee and “Top Fuel” Bill Williamson credited everyone who helped with the unprecedented success of this year’s ride, and promised another ride next year, “and every year for September 11.” “Sending out a BIG Thank You to all who supported and cheered on the 2 Million Bikers to DC ride,” e-mailed Angel Richardson, a member of the NCOM Board of Directors who attended the hugely successful event; “We have a kick ass bunch of patriots!” CHRISTIAN AND VETERAN BIKERS SUE OVER BEING THROWN OUT OF FAIR
Motorcyclists who were thrown out of the Florida State Fair for displaying their love of America and Christianity on their vests must amend their lawsuit, a federal judge has ruled. According to Courthouse News, Mark Denico, Thomas Griswold 42
Jr., Timothy Newberry and Dennis Walsted had arrived at the Florida State Fair on Feb. 7, 2010. Denico and Griswold are members of the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club, while Newberry and Walsted belong to the Spirit Riders Motorcycle Ministry. Walsted said he was planning to “lead all the motorcyclists in prayer once inside the fair,” but he and the others were escorted out once they paid for admission. Fair rules ban gang colors or signs, and members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office told the quartet that they could not enter the fair while wearing vests with the patches indicating motorcycle club membership. Tampa Bay Times reported that approximately 50 bikers from numerous clubs were turned away that day. In their subsequent lawsuit, the four accused law enforcement and fair officials of violating their First Amendment rights to freedom of association and religion. U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington nevertheless dismissed the complaint without prejudice because it failed to specifically indicate claims under the federal civil right law Section 1983, which creates a private right of action for civil damages. The fair demonstrated that the “plaintiffs’ naked reference to § 1983 is insufficient for defendants or this court to assume that they intended to bring [counts one through nine] under its rubric,” according to the ruling. “Plaintiffs may have identified constitutional rights alleged to have been violated, but have failed to allege causes of action associated with those violations,” Covington added. The judge also declined to give the plaintiffs an injunction restraining the defendants from “ordering, compelling, bullying, requesting, coercing, or threatening a member of a motorcycle club or motorcycle ministry to remove their vests with ‘patches’ on them signifying membership within a particular organization.” Injunctions are appropriate only if plaintiffs can show they will continue to be harmed during the course of litigation, according to the ruling. “Conspicuously absent from the operative complaint is any allegation that the plaintiffs intend to return to the Florida Stair Fair wearing their prohibited patches or that the plaintiffs face specific future harm at the hands of the defendants,” Covington wrote. Vaguely alleging that “the Florida State Fair Authority will continue to selectively exclude certain motorcyclists from the fair” is not sufficient to reach the standard for an injunction, the court ruled, and so the club members must amend their complaint before moving forward with the lawsuit. MOTORCYCLIST FINED FOR TIRE TREADS
A New York rider who set out for a Friday the 13th motorcycle trip to Port Dover, Ontario told local CTV News that he was unfairly ticketed and pulled off the roads by Waterloo Regional Police in Canada. Jeff Selby of Elmira, NY claims the officers were excessive in their punishment after a routine roadside check found the tread on his motorcycle tires was point five millimeters under code. Selby says he offered to drive his bike straight to a repair shop to have the tire replaced but the officers said no. “He goes it doesn’t matter. Your bike will be off the road as of today. We’re gonna take your plate, we’re gonna charge you and you’re gonna have to get a tow truck.” Selby told the news station that he understands the safety concerns but says he has a clean driving record and deserves a warning first, and that the five hundred or more dollars he’s now facing in fines, relicensing fees and towing cost is exorbitant. Police there say the law is the law and you can’t put a price on safety, adding that when it comes to safety there’s no room for warnings or second chances

The legal regulation for tires on any motorized vehicle is that they have to have at least 1.5 millimeters of tread on the majority of the tires circumference. ACCIDENTS POSSIBLY LINKED TO BRAIN MISCALCULATIONS
Incidences of cars pulling out in front of motorcyclists run regularly in headlines -- locally, statewide and throughout the nation -- and there could be a scientific reason. Recent research by a Texas Tech University psychologist suggests that the regularity of this problem isn’t necessarily a case of poor driving or carelessness, but may be related to a basic human judgment error. Pat DeLucia, the coordinator of the Human Factors Psychology Program, said her results show that small, near objects can appear farther away than larger, farther objects. The study is published in the peer-reviewed scientific psychology journal “Current Directions in Psychological Science.” An interest in softball prompted DeLucia to study how the human brain perceives objects, their size and motion and an object’s time to impact. Her finding -- that an object’s size affects distance perception -- may be the basis explaining why car drivers miscalculate motorcyclists’ distance and speed. Many times, the brain interprets objects with a larger retinal image as closer. Since motorcycles are smaller than cars, DeLucia said the brain may use this shortcut to judge a smaller motorcycle farther away than it actually is.
dedicated short range communications technology,11/1/11 Honda said 5:06 PM it can alert both a driver and pedestrian, or motorcycle rider, of an impending collision. Vehicle-to-Pedestrian and Vehicle-to-Motorcycle technologies are still in the early development and testing stages, but Honda intends to integrate the advanced collision sensing and predictive technologies into their vehicles through a special licensed radio band that allows cars to send and receive messages from surrounding vehicles. The system that might be an app one day on a smartphone is capable of alerting drivers that a pedestrian or motorcycle is near, even if the driver can’t see them, in time to avoid a collision. Jim Keller, chief engineer for Honda R&D Americas, Inc. said connected vehicle technology could be on the road by 2020, and the technology would be much cheaper than implementing cameras and other safety systems equipped on vehicles today. Honda is one of eight automakers involved in a federal vehicle-tovehicle communication study which began a year ago in Ann Arbor with the help of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and has been extended six months. WEIRD NEWS: BLIND DISABLED MOTORCYCLIST SETS SPEED RECORD
The dangers of riding a motorcycle are obvious even to able-bodied operators, yet blind, disabled Scottish biker Stuart Gunn threw caution to the wind by setting a new world record by clocking 167.1 mph.
This size-arrival effect can lead drivers to misjudge when a vehicle would arrive at an intersection and could be considered a contributing factor in motorcycle/vehicle accidents.
Gunn is a real world Daredevil, and with a little help from his father, Geoff, the pair ride together and dad cheerfully informs his son if he’s drifting or should brake, assisting his blind and paralyzed-from-thewaste-down son to beat world speed records.
DeLucia hopes to find funding from the Texas Department of Transportation to create an educational program to inform drivers of her findings and reduce the incidents of these types of accidents.
“I hope this proves to people that just because you are blind or have a disability, doesn’t mean it should change or limit your life,” says Gunn, the World’s Fastest Blind Motorcycle Rider.

A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student nurse appears and gives him a partial sponge bath. “Nurse,”’ he mumbles from behind the mask, “are my testicles black?” Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, “I don’t know, Sir. I’m only here to wash your upper body and feet.”... He struggles to ask again, “Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?” Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles in the other. She looks very closely and says, “There’s nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine.” The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very slowly, “Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen very, very closely: Are - my - test - results - back?” A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came in a little white box, very upscale, to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to his local pub for a drink with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go down the pub with me tonight? We will have a really good time and you can meet all my buddies.” But there was no answer from his new pet. This kinda’ bothered him a bit as he wondered if he had gotten scammed and paid for a talking centipede but got one with no voice. He waited a few more minutes and then asked again, “How about going down the pub with me ?”But again, there was no answer from his new pet. So he waited a few minutes more. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede’s beautiful white box and shouted, “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to the pub with me or not, then? A little voice came out of the box, “For cryin’ out loud, I heard you the first time. I ‘m putting my f***in’ shoes on here, mate”. 46

A young family moved into a house, next to a vacant lot. One day, a Construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family’s 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the workers. Eventually the construction crew, all of them “gems-inthe-rough”, more or less, adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week, they even presented her with a pay envelope containing ten dollars. The little girl took this home to her mother who suggested that she take her ten dollars “pay” she’d received to the bank the next day to start a savings account. When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her very own pay check at such a young age.. The little girl proudly replied, “I worked last week with a real construction crew building the new house next door to us.” “Oh my goodness gracious,” said the teller, “and will you be working on the house again this week, too?” The little girl replied, “I will, if those a-holes at A to Z Depot ever deliver the f***n’ sheet rock.” Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. In fact, just pretty much leave me alone. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works. One Sunday morning, Satan appeared before a small town congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front church door, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away. Soon, everyone was gone, except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly in the evacuated pew. Satan walked up to the man and said, “Don’t you know who I am?” The man replied, “Yep, sure do.” Satan asked, “Aren’t you going to run?” “Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man. Very upset at this disrespect, Satan asked, “Why aren’t you afraid of me?” The man calmly replied, “Been married to your sister for over 48 years.
