ALRIGHT…..it’s official and we’re calling it; Spring Has Sprung! Hallelujah and Amen! Sweet Lord & the powers of the Universe that be, do we absolutely adore Spring and Fall. Summer gets too hot and sticky (and there’s only specific times I like to get hot & sticky, if you know what I mean), and I realize winter is essential for recharging our batteries, but SPRING is freakin’ amazing with all the tulips of every color in bloom and everything turns green and my little Hummingbirds return to feast at their feeder. Spring is our gift of rebirth and rejuvenation. And I for one am grateful for Spring. Another thing that’s official is……I’m a Grandma for the very first time! Yay! It’s one of those amazing events I’ve waited for, but didn’t realize there was waiting until it began. Miss Deja Rylee . She’s gorgeous and as any new parents or grandparents can attest, you just have this automatic, instant unconditional love and need to protect that kicks in. Babies are amazing and I look forward to many years of watching her gain knowledge. She’s going to be someone very recognized one day, that’s my epiphany. And we would be gravely amiss if we didn’t say our heartfelt prayers go out to all those friends, family and a Nation of compassion for those of the Boston Marathon. Boston is such a tough-ass city though, and they’re loyal, authentic souls….they will heal and come back stronger from their loss. God bless them all. The local Red Cross of Boston is in dire need of donations, so please contact them and give what you can. Even if it’s only $5., that’s 5 bucks more than they had before. To all those that have asked about our Super B., we just want to Thank You for your prayers and thoughtfulness. He’s just like all of us, he has good days and bad days and right now, they’re about even. We urge you all to speak your love to those you do, and on a regular basis. And don’t just toss the word around like a ball, look them in the eye and make that human connection and see them. More than enough runs, rides, rallies and charity events to keep all us bikers covered up and busy as all get out this Season. We’re so proud that the Motorcycle Awareness is represented in our mag and they are doing so much to enhance vehicle drivers of our presence back out on the road. I really like the flashing highway signs… ”Watch For Motorcycle Riders”. That’s a good thing and keeps us cognizant in vehicle drivers minds. So, have FUN out there by all means, but be aware. Love ya’ bikers. toni & brian

APPLETON’S

READ TO RIDE

R

ead to Ride is an event where bikers come out to support the children of our Clarksville Community. Children’s books are donated as their ticket to ride. All of the books collected were donated to the Clarksville Montgomery County School System. This year the ride started at Appleton Harley-Davidson with free coffee & donuts. This year’s ride went out to Hazelwood Elementary where students, parents, teachers and staff were playing games, eating concessions and cheering on as the books arrived at the school! Riders returned to Appleton Harley-Davidson for a free lunch. There were 54 riders and 6,000 books donated! “Watching the kids help move the books, seeing the Hazelwood Elementary staff be as excited as the children, and then the large group of motorcycles come riding up to the school, was a scene that I will never forget.” Kara Black, Marketing & Event Coordinator for Appleton Harley-Davidson. Rob Brown, with the Non-Profit FOX Foundation & the main coordinator for Read to Ride. was able to get over 5,000 books donated prior to the event. For a 2nd annual event the turn out was great. All that were involved in the planning of Read to Ride look forward to the event growing from year to year. Kara Black Marketing & Event Coordinator Appleton Harley-Davidson 4

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

LINDA REDIKER’S BIRTHDAY CINCO de MAYO BACON & BOURBON WINGS *For bigger crowds just double or triple recipe 24 Mini Drumsticks (legs) & Wings; mixed Large Bottle of Peanut Oil for Frying 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar (*optional) 3 Cloves of Garlic; finely chopped 1/2 tsp. Prepared Horseradish 1/4 tsp. Ground Ginger 1/2 Stick of Real Butter 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce 3/4 Cup of Bourbon 3/4 Cup of Ketchup A few hefty dashes of Louisianne Hot Sauce 12 Strips of Cooked Bacon I quit frying bacon years ago once I learned that if you take a large cookie sheet and put a wired rack over top and lay out all the bacon you want on it and cook at 475 degree oven for 15 minutes; remove to paper towels to drain, your bacon is perfect every single time and no spatters all over the place, including your fingers and wrists. Perfect every time. Just know 15 mins is crispy crunchy, so if you prefer non crispy, adjust the length of time you leave in oven. Melt down your butter and add all other ingredients; cook for apprx. 10 minutes over medium heat. Get a large deep-sided skillet and fry up your legs & wings in hot! peanut oil; 370 degrees. While frying, cut your drained bacon strips in half. Remove wings from frying oil directly onto paper towels. Let cool just slightly and wrap them in a half bacon strip and secure with a toothpick. Once your sauce has cooked down, place your chicken in the sauce and make sure they’re swimming in sauce and well covered completely and allow to remain in there a bit to soak up the fabulous flavors. Serve up with cold Bleu Cheese dressing. The flavor is amazing. EXTRA-LARGE PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS w/ BACON & BLEU CHEESE for MOTHER’S DAY as prepared by Michael Symon on “The Chew”

5 Portobello Mushrooms (clean with damp paper towel only) 2 Tbls. Butter 1/2 Lb. Sliced Smoked Bacon (chopped) 1 Sweet Onion; finely chopped 6

3 Tbls. All-Purpose Flour 2 Cups of Chicken Stock 1/2 Cup of Whole Milk 3/4 Cup of Bleu Cheese 1/2 Cup of Parsley (chopped or dried) Olive Oil Salt & Pepper to taste In a large saute’ pan over medium heat add 2 Tbls. of olive oil. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp. Remove the bacon w/ a slotted spoon to a non-coated paper plate. Add the shrooms to the bacon fat & season with salt & pepper. Cook 3-4 mins. until golden brown, then flip, season again and cook until golden brown again. Remove the shrooms from the pan to a serving platter. Add the onion to the renderings and season w/ salt & pepper and cook until the onion is translucent. Add the butter and then toss back in the bacon and sprinkle the flour over the onion & bacon mixture. Cook, stirring constantly until the flour begins to look sandy. Slowly pour in the chicken stock & scrape up any brown bits on bottom of the pan. Once the gravy starts to thicken & simmer, pour in the milk. Add the bleu cheese & cook until the gravy coats the back of the spoon; about 5 mins. Taste & adjust seasoning. Add the parsley. Spoon the gravy generously over the tops of the mushrooms and serve. * Portobellos are so texturally meaty they’re the “steak” of shrooms. MEMORIAL DAY RED, WHITE & BLUE LAYERED TIRAMISU 1 Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Spread 2 Cups of Cold Milk 1 Pkg. Jell-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding 1-1/2 Cups Thawed Cool Whip Topping 1 Pkg. Prepared Pound Cake; Cut Into 1/2 inch Cubes 3 Cups Brewed Regular or Gourmet Coffee; Cooled 1 oz. Semi-Sweet Chocolate; coarsely grated 1 Cup of Fresh Raspberries & Blueberries, each With hand mixer blend milk, cream cheese, then pudding mix. Gently stir in 1 cup Cool Whip. In a medium size glass torte’ bowl layer cake cubes, then a half cup of coffee, then pudding mixture, then raspberries, cool whip, then blueberries, then grated chocolate. Keep layering this way until all ingredients gone. Salute & Enjoy!

THE TRIUMPH TIGER

T

he Triumph Tiger 800XC is a true British “go everywhere” motorcycle that has been machine designed and built for adventures. True to its calling as a tough, durable, and versatile bike, the Tiger 800XC is capable of coping with the demands of off-road riding, thanks to a combination of utilitarian design, powerful engine, and superb handling characteristics. Just as with many of Triumph’s other classleading machines, the rider can adjust both the handlebar position and seat height of the Tiger 800XC, offering a commanding view above the traffic and a comfortable perch from which to devour the miles. The bike also has a classleading 5.0 gallon fuel tank that ensures long-distance rides go uninterrupted. Cavernous hard and soft luggage options are available, as is a comprehensive instrumentation that includes a fuel gauge and trip computer. As far as the engine goes, powering the Tiger 800XC is a new long-stroke triple engine that produces an impressive 94 brake horsepower and an extremely accessible 58 lb/ft of torque. With its flat torque curve and gentle power delivery, the Tiger 800XC is a pleasure to ride in even in the most demanding of conditions.

The Tiger comes standard with handguards to protect against brush and weather.

Then there’s the aforementioned handling credentials. Longtravel 45mm upside-down front forks and a rear suspension unit all combine with a 21” spoked front wheel to deliver maximum ground clearance and the ability to cope with rough trails. Likewise, a sophisticated anti-lock braking system is available as an option and can be deactivated for off-road riding, while the high specification extends to a standard coded-key immobilizer and rear rack with generous pillion grab handles. What is an Adventure Motorcycle?

Adventure Bikes are utilitarian motorcycles designed to cover great distances on less then perfect roads. Often times they are outfitted with hard petal parts and other protection (such as hand guards and light cages) to guard against rocks and other objects that could damage the bike (or rider). Most have longer suspensions allowing travel of six of more inches to absorb the imperfections of dirt roads and trails. They are also generally lighter weight, despite their rugged appearance. Generally Adventure Bikes are distinguished from “Dual Sport” bikes by the engine displacement. Adventure Bikes are usually larger then 650cc, while Dual Sport or “Enduros” are generally smaller. Adventure Bikes are designed for carry one or two passengers (and their gear) on overnight or multiple day trips miles from civilization. Most have increased fuel capacity and many feature electrical systems with generators intended to power devices beyond an iPod. Adventure Motorcycles offer riders the opportunity to explore their world beyond the limitations of smooth pavement. They are long-distance touring machines capable of burning pavement or high tailing it up a trail. 8

Annual Mule Day event arrives in Columbia!

O

By: Rebel Ron Photos: Jennifer Tapia

n April 6 the small town of Columbia, Tenn./aka Mule Town welcomed about 200,000 people from all walks of life to celebrate the hard headed but much appreciated Mule along with other four legged critters that we all depended on before motorized machines arrived. There is a lot going on around town for several days from live music, mule pullings, a liar contest, yard sales, animal shows & sales, knife shows, Miss Mule Day contest, leading up to the huge parade on Saturday, & much much more. S & G Custom Cycles held its 34th annual Mule Day Party that Saturday as well. The Independent Harley shop also celebrated its 40th year in business with about 350 customers, friends, bikers, cowboys, & more. They enjoyed free food & Pabst Blue Ribbon beer along with a great music show & hooking up with old pals while making new ones. Many newcombers were checking out the unique décor of the family bike business that began in 1919, numerous vintage bikes, old advertising, custom builds, funny gags, 3 dead guys in the showroom, parts specials, military display tribute, & more. This year they had the fantastic Nashville area Rock ‘n Blues band Phoenix Rising with the lovely & energetic Amy Brown handling

the lead vocals & fun to watch hoola hooping. The band began rocking the 30,000 square foot building at 10am & played till 1pm when they closed the doors at S & G Cycles to enjoy some of the many other exciting things going on in town that day. At11:30 am the band took a break while announcements were made, gave away dozens of door prizes, & enjoyed the wild performance by two lovely ladies called “The Grinder Girls.” They both wear metal corsets that allows Crystal to use an electric grinder to grind on herself & Jakki while shooting metal sparks all over the audience to the sounds of some killer AC/DC music. It was hot!!! Literally. (Crystal Starr and Jakki Suzette are two members of the amazing Nashville Cirque Du Burlesque. These ladies put on some great shows around Music City that is fun to watch for many reasons. Look them up on Facebook & catch a show sometime. You will not be disappointed!) The owner of S & G Custom Cycles, Sam Goodman, wanted to thank all who came out on that beautiful sunny day to enjoy all the food, drinks, laughs, and entertainment. He also wants to thank those who continue to do business with S & G along with inviting those who have yet to witness the one of a kind old skool bike shop to stop by & see what people are talking about. Look for out ad in TRM for more info. The 2013 riding season is here! Be careful in your travels, enjoy life, help others when ya can, learn to be happy, & God bless America!!!!!

NEWS BYTES

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

FEDERAL BILL INTENDS TO STOP MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINTS On April 15, Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) circulated a “Dear Colleague” letter to fellow members of Congress to garner sponsors for legislation he intends to introduce on May 6, 2013 “To stop motorcycle checkpoint funding.” “In the 112th Congress, I introduced H.R. 904, a bill to prohibit the Department of Transportation (DOT) from providing funds to state and local authorities for the purpose of creating motorcycle only checkpoints,” wrote Rep. Sensenbrenner to his peers. “Section 1 of the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act contains the same language as H.R. 904. However, this bill also contains language to force the DOT to focus motorcycle safety efforts on crash prevention programs, not national helmet mandates.” Under GRANT RESTRICTION, Section 2 reads; “The Secretary of Transportation may not provide a grant or any funds to a State, county, town, or township, Indian tribe, municipal or other local government to be used for any program to check helmet usage or create checkpoints for an operator of motorcycle or passenger on a motorcycle.” In addition, the new legislation amends Section 153 of Title 23 USC by removing “motorcycle helmets” from the title. “This change will prohibit the DOT from providing grants to a State to enforce helmet laws,” according to Sensenbrenner. “This will stop the DOT from manipulating State policies with federal money.” CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE APPROVES E15 PROHIBITION The U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology approved H.R. 875 by a vote of 18-17 on April 11, which would revoke the Environmental Protection Agency’s approval of E15 alcohol-laden gasoline for sale to the public. U.S. Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) introduced H.R. 875 on February 28, which would require the federal EPA to stop the use of gasoline containing 15% ethanol (E15) until its harmful effects are investigated further. NHTSA SEEKS TO SUBVERT PUBLIC SCRUTINY The US Department of Transportation is looking to fast track adoption of rules, bypassing the public comment process and adopting rules directly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed to give itself “direct final rulemaking” authority which would allow the agency to declare a regulatory proposal, which carries the force of law, to be non-controversial and rush it into effect. “NHTSA believes this procedural option would expedite the issuance of, and thereby save time and agency resources on, rules that are not controversial,” the agency’s proposed rule states. NHTSA is responsible for a number of major rules, including the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) mandates that direct automobile manufacturers to meet certain mileage requirements. It also plays a major role in the design of vehicles by mandating various “safety” features such as rear-view cameras, “trunk entrapment” rules to foil kidnappers, and “quiet car” rules to require electric vehicles to make noise to alert blind pedestrians – Such rules cost the automobile industry billions of dollars in compliance costs, but could arguably be “noncontroversial.” Under procedures that allow a measure to take effect within sixty days of its publication in the Federal Register as a final rule, the public would have just thirty days to file an adverse comment to slow the process down, otherwise the final rule would automatically become effective. 14

NEVADA CONSIDERS LANE-SPLITTING, FASTER SPEED LIMITS The Silver State may soon adopt the Golden State’s rule on lane sharing, as AB 236 has passed Assembly Committee on Transportation with only two committee members opposing the measure to allow motorcyclists to filter between lanes of slow-moving traffic. California is currently the only U.S. state that allows the practice, though “lane filtering” is commonplace throughout many other parts of the world. Committee Chair and bill co-sponsor Richard Carrillo (D-Clark Co), a long-time rider, laid out one of the best reasons to split lanes -- avoiding a rear end collision -- saying “at the end of the day, I want to know that I’m going to come home and not be a part of the pavement or the back of somebody’s truck or car. To me, this really resonates.” Next step – the bill goes before the full Assembly and the Senate. In the meantime, the Nevada State Legislature may raise the maximum speed limit from 75 mph to 85 mph has passed the State Senate 15-6 on April 3 and the measure now goes over to the State Assembly for consideration. Introduced by Senator Don Gustavson (R-Sparks), a longtime advocate of bikers’ rights who was awarded the NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Government, SB 191 would fast track NDOT to up the speed limit to 85 mph some open stretches of freeways, matching some 85mph speed limits posted in Texas. MOTORCYCLE LICENSE NOT REQUIRED IN ALABAMA, UNLESS BILL PASSES Every state but one requires a motorcycle license or endorsement to operate a motorcycle, but in Alabama anyone 16 and older with a regular driver’s license can also drive a motorcycle in the state. An oversight in the 1990s led to the gap in the law and now DPS is supporting legislation to fix the mistake. The state Senate in February passed a bill to require motorcycle drivers to have a Class M endorsement on their license. The bill is pending in the House of Representatives. Under current law, drivers can ask to take the knowledge test to get the Class M endorsement on their license, but the law does not require the endorsement to operate a motorcycle. Those who don’t have the Class M endorsement are only legal driving a motorcycle as long as they are riding in Alabama. Rep. Allen Farley (R-McCalla), House sponsor of the bill, said he would also eventually like to see a skills test. Forty states require a skills test for a motorcycle license, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. ABATE RECOGNIZED BY ARKANSAS LAWMAKERS ABATE members from around the state gathered in Little Rock at the Arkansas House of Representatives on April 4, 2013 for the reading and vote on HR1040, which reads in part: “The House of Representatives commends ABATE, the Arkansas Bikers Aiming Towards Education organization, for raising awareness of motorcycle safety issues; for promoting goodwill and mutual understanding among motorcyclists, law enforcement personnel, and the general public; for being an information resource for its members; and for working to benefit the less fortunate through various events.” OREGON PROPOSAL WOULD MAKE IT A CRIME TO BE LINKED TO A “GANG” In an attempt to crack down on violent criminal activity, Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it a crime just being linked to what it defines as a “gang”. The big question is how would authorities decide who’s a gang member and who’s not, and the bill says any group of three or more people whose main purpose is criminal activity, has a commonly known name or symbol and regularly engages in criminal acts would be considered a “criminal street gang.”

Police currently track gang members, but there’s no law against AIM-2622-F-Ad for Tennessee.indd 1 belonging to any particular organization even if that group is repeatedly tied to criminal activity, but House Bill 2679 and its companion, House Bill 2851, would give authorities another tool for cracking down on gang members because under the proposed law, just being a member would be a felony and subject to stiffer sentences. The Oregon American Civil Liberties Union told lawmakers it is concerned that the definition of a “criminal street gang” is too vague. “The breadth of the bill and the confusion that will result from its definitions, or lack thereof, risks violating a defendant’s due process rights because that defendant is not on notice of what activity is criminal,” said the ACLU, adding that current laws are strong enough and urged lawmakers to not advance the bills. MOTORCYCLE CLUB PUBLICATIONS BARRED BEHIND BARS Last month we reported that the NCOM Brothers Behind Bars monthly newsletter was being banned from prisons in Australia, but now word comes from one of our own New England states that biker-related printed materials are being systematically rejected. Referring to a note received from a Connecticut inmate, The Aging Rebel quoted on his website www.agingrebel.com; “Here at our prison, last year they began to bar books about or by motorcycle club members. This includes the book “The Aging Rebel: Dispatches From The Motorcycle Outlaw Frontier” by Donald Charles Davis. These books are purely being banned because their subject matter includes motorcycle clubs. They use the ‘catch-all’ ‘promotes criminal activity’ while still allowing books on the Mafia, murder, kidnapping and corruption of government officials, all of which apparently promote NO criminal activity.” Some people may be surprised to learn that among the other rights prisoners forfeit is the right to read what they want, but as TAR expresses; “The high court began to back track in 1987, in a decision called Turner v. Salley. After that case, the First Amendment right to read could be ‘reasonably regulated’ if prison officials asserted a ‘legitimate neutral interest’ and the Supreme Court ruling established something called the “Turner Test.” In a letter from the Connecticut Dept of Correction, the Media Review Board determined that “The aforementioned publication was originally rejected in its entirety on November 9, 2012 under Section 6: It encourages or instructs in the commission of criminal activity. This publication was thoroughly reviewed and is determined to have met the criteria for rejection. The publication will not be allowed inside a correctional facility.” WEIRD NEWS: ILLEGAL ALIEN RULED INCOMPETENT FOR TRIAL An illegal alien in Massachusetts who was drunk driving when he hit and May 2013

dragged a Mass. motorcyclist to his death has been ruled incompetent 11/1/11 5:06 PM to stand trial. Insane? No. Mentally handicapped? Nope… “Unique cultural background”? YES! Despite numerous previous run-ins with the law, Judge Janet KintonWalker ruled that Nicolas Guaman’s “unique cultural background” prohibits him from understanding the U.S. legal process. The judge also ruled that Guaman lacks the ability to effectively consult with his attorney, according to FOX 25 in Boston that broke the story. Defense attorneys across the nation will undoubtedly be watching this case very closely, and if Guaman somehow avoids justice you can count on this defense coming to a courthouse near you – “¿me entiendes?” NCOM CONVENTION HONORS FALLEN RIDERS; INVITES NAMES FOR TRIBUTE With the 28th Annual NCOM Convention in Reno just weeks away, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists is requesting that MROs, motorcycle clubs, and riding associations submit the names of those members and supporters who have died since May 2012, so that we may honor their memories during the traditional “Ringing of the Bell” tribute to fallen riders during the opening ceremonies. Dedications can be hand-delivered at the Convention to “Doc” Reichenbach, NCOM Chairman of the Board, or e-mailed in advance to Bill Bish at NCOMBish@aol.com. Attendees are also encouraged to bring an item on behalf of their organization for the Freedom Fund Auction, with proceeds benefiting the motorcyclists’ rights movement nationwide through Getting Our People Elected donations, NCOM Speaker Program, lobbying activities and other pro-motorcycling projects as determined by the NCOM Board of Directors. The 28th annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 9-12, 2013 at the Silver Legacy Resort-Casino located at 407 N. Virginia St. in Reno, Nevada, so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $95 by calling (800) 687-8733. This annual gathering will draw bikers’ rights activists from across the country to discuss topics of concern to all riders, and ALL motorcyclists are welcome and encouraged to attend. Meetings, seminars and group discussions will focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride and Freedom of the Road. BIKERS DOING WHAT BIKERS DO... by Bruce King In early September of 2012, a local news station ran the story of 86 year old Mary Benham. She had been living in the house she owned, and will continue to own, for 9 straight months, with no electricity and no hot water. She’d been sleeping on a ratty couch, not a foot away from a kerosene heater, which she also “cooked” her meals on. Metro Codes had inspected and condemned the place. They insisted she’d have to move. The house, everything she and her late husband had worked for much of their lives, the place they had purchased together and made a lifetime of memories in, would be torn down and hauled away. The story thoroughly pissed me off. I wondered, where was the help for people like her? Why “relocate” her, at this stage of life, to a place she refuses to go? I wondered if losing her home might not be the very thing that would end her life. Forcing her out of her home was no answer. I couldn’t see harm in at least TRYING to help one of our senior citizens, an AMERICAN senior citizen no less, live out the rest of her days in relative peace and happiness. On the 8th of September, I decided to create a Facebook page, “Lets Help Mary Benham Keep Her House”. I thought maybe I could at least help get her electricity restored. Maybe round up a little cash to help her along or something. It didn’t seem like much else was being done, so why not, right? I called to say I was coming over so we could talk. I said, “I’ll be coming on a motorcycle, so you’ll know its me when you hear me pull up.” She said, “My husband and I used to ride the motorcycle all the time before he died. After that, I had to walk to the Post Office and I would see them going by. It isnt so bad now, but it used to make me cry and cry.” I felt like a man who was about to bury his favorite dog. Maybe a little worse than that. It quickly became clear that I wasn’t the only biker in town who didn’t care for the idea of local government putting the boots to an old woman. The page got so many hits and had so much traffic that I couldn’t keep up. I asked a friend of mine, Cindy Leggo, to become co administrator. She took this thing and just ran with it. During the course of the project, she was largely responsible for much of the good things that happened, and I cant thank her enough for all her hard work and dedication. However, what happened in the next 5 months would prove to be nothing short of an absolute miracle. 18

Within the next 24 hours, biker folks were pouring out of the woodwork to help. Dawn McQueeney and Vicki Henderson brought meals to Marys house or she was taken to restaurants. Kerosene lamps provided light while people like A&F Electric, whose card and kind note I found taped to her door, struggled to get power turned back on. Juanita Copley showed up with her weed-eater and her rake to clear weeds and cut the grass, an American flag was donated for Marys pole by Aubrey Gilley, who like many, turned in tireless service hours during this project. Arrangements were made by good friends to get her to a doctor and she came home with a new hearing aid. Kim Kelley and Debbie Bednarz Lannom bought groceries and elbow grease. Rebecca Minkle, Preston Wynn and Karen Barrington provided gift cards and later donated about 300 feet of 2x4s. Mary was given a cell phone to call for help if she needed it, and she used it on several occasions for just what it was meant for. Things were moving, but I’m not going to lie, I was afraid the fury would die down and Mary would be left with a neatly trimmed yard and a handful of trouble. Man, I was wrong....Dead. Wrong. About three days after creating the page, Nick Bozzelli saw this story and took heart to it very quickly being an East Nashville native himself. His first response was, “What can we do to help this lady?” Nick, with no other regard except Ms. Benham’s well-being, spoke with Metro Codes on her behalf and without haste began using the resources of the company to line up materials, contractors, and others to donate their own resources. Actually, all three owners of G.H.Const are East Nashville natives with many ties and family still in East Nashville so it was easy to follow Nick’s selfless and thought-provoking decision to move forward. Green Hills Construction took on the heavy lifting, and eventually most of the cost of the rebuild, which is exactly what it turned out to be. There was no way to simply patch the house back together. There was exposed wood, rotted joists not connected to the foundation, cracks in the foundation and foundation walls. The electric box was open and exposed to the elements, the floors were uneven, rotting and separated from the walls. There were holes in the floors and the ceiling was caving in, the roof leaked and she had no electricity or adequate plumbing. To say that this was going to be an uphill climb was more than just an understatement. A day was held for volunteers to sign up and outline what they could do, material lists were made, and prayers were offered up as Nick Bozelli and his

back home. Many bikes were in attendance, with over $1700.00 dollars raised, but things for Country didnt stop there. As with anyone in Marys situation, there were many issues in Marys life that continue to require attention, and Country stepped up to help with these things long before Mary was re-settled. Country has a huge heart and continues to do some great work for Mary. Thank you, Country. If the world had more folks like you, we would all have a better place to live.

Green Hills Construction outfit waded in up to their ears and got on with the business at hand. The demo began in mid September and ten days later it was clear that the house would have to be entirely gutted in order to properly make repairs. During this time, many volunteers and many companies lent their services free of charge to see that Green Hills Construction had the manpower and resources needed to continue the work they were doing. Sarah Martin and Green Hills also set up a ChipIn account where folks from out of state as well as locally were able to make donations in lieu of being able to physically lend a hand. We were even given assistance by businesses like Home Depot, NES and at one point, even Kentucky Fried Chicken stepped to the plate. The house was completely gutted, windows doors, floors, roof, plumbing, fixtures, wiring, the whole thing. To go into any greater detail than that would be impossible for there was so much work done. What is worth noting, is that by the first week of February, a mere 5 months after work began, Mary was moving back into her house. Personally, I had no idea a home could be torn apart and put back together so quickly. I credit Green Hills Construction with such hard work and attention to detail and cant thank them enough. It is my sincere hope that as you read this article you will give some thought to using them on your next project, or passing along their number to a friend. They made no money here, actually going into their own pockets for much of the expense, and to their credit, the home is as beautiful as any I have ever seen. I would be proud to call such a place my own, and I am proud to call those at Green Hills friends of mine.

On March 30th, 2013, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to finalize what so many had worked so hard to finish. The day was cool and damp, but bikes still made their way to Marys house. Having broken a couple ribs back in January, I hadnt had a chance to see how things were coming along until that day. I was shocked at how nice it was. I noticed that someone had even thought to produce a brand new cage for Marys beloved pet birds. I couldnt help but smile at that. We all gathered in front, and Ray Elder offered up a great prayer and anointed the house with oil while we all watched. Then Mary cut the ribbon, and just like that closure was brought to a job well done by so very many people. I hope I wrote this well, and I hope I didnt leave anyone out that I should have remembered. There were so many involved with Marys house, it would be impossible to remember everyone, but I wont soon forget how this whole thing has made me feel about my community and the friends I have and have yet to make. I am incredibly grateful.

In addition, I would like to single out and thank two more of the many businesses that got involved with this project. Carrie Ann McManama, (aka Country) and The Beer Belly, 2907 Gallatin Rd, East Nashville, as well as Amanda Dennis Anderson and Rose Black of Skullys Saloon at 333 Swinging Bridge Rd, Old Hickory, Tn. Leading up to the Christmas holidays, the idea to make a Harley Davidson themed quilt was hatched, and the girls jumped in to start gathering up donated T-shirts to stitch together for it.Karen Woodward Barrington pulled the whole thing together with her thread and needle, and the result was one of the prettiest, and certainly one of the coolest quilts Ive ever seen. Some of my favorite people working together for a great cause, it was a pleasure to watch. Skullys also got involved in arranging for a sink and vanity to be installed at Marys house, and as you can see by the pictures, another great result ensued. On the 17th of November, a poker run was held by Country and The Beer Belly to raise funds to help finish the project and get Ms. Mary May 2013

The truth is, there were a lot of hearts, and a lot of hands involved and invested in what we all did for Ms. Mary. No one set of hands or one heart, not one barroom or one billfold, more important or any less important than any other. Perhaps, more important than any one of us individuals, is the idea of it all. That’s what amazed me as I watched this all unfold...the raw spirit of the people, the determination to make a wrong right again. The very thing that makes this country the best in the world. The notion that a Goliath could be conquered by a David, that a commoner could rise against an oppressor, the notion that a tax payer still had the right, and the balls, to say NO to his government, NO to their 30 day deadline, NO to their little codes inspection that would’ve certainly shortened the life of an old woman. NO to the idea that nothing could be done, that all was lost, that it would be best to join the rank and file and don’t say anything that would get someones politically correct ass in a twist. That’s what I love about what happened here. An arm of the government said, “We are going to see that you comply”, and a group of Americans got together and said, “You can kiss our ass.”

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: Armed Forces Day is May 18th and Memorial Day is May 27th. This is a month when the American Flag, Service Flags and the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag will be very visible and on display. All of these flags are symbols of our freedoms, liberty and the price that is paid to keep them. As such when the flags are displayed they represent many honorable things and the sacrifices of countless thousands of fellow Americans. How many of you have an American flag on your bike, in front of your work or on display where you live? I’m betting that most of you do. The American Flag is our highest ranking national ensign and the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flag is a national ensign on six days of national recognition; Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day and Veterans Day. On these days the POW/MIA flag flies directly under the American Flag. Today many municipalities, states, businesses and residences fly the POW/MIA flag year around to show their support of those who have not come home and their families. Flags that carry so much honor are deserving of and treated with great respect. Many people mistakenly think the American Flag represents the United States Government and when they are upset at the government they show their unhappiness by trampling, burning and tearing up our flag of honor. Our constitution provides for legal redress of mistaken government actions and guarantees liberty and freedom from oppression. Those who burn the flag are actually burning the symbol of their freedom to express their opinions and dishonoring all Americans who have laid their life, liberty and fortune on the line to insure that we have the opportunity for those same freedoms today.

20

The American Flag is the flag of the people and it honors us and what we and countless Americans like us have done and are doing to insure this country is a land of free people where we can pursue or not pursue our dreams under a constitution that respects the rights and liberty of the individual. What do you do with a flag that you have flown proudly and is now showing age or starting to fall apart. Of course we bring it down and replace it with a new flag but what should we do with the old flag? Like a soldier it should be retired with respect and honor. One way to do this is to fold your old flag and take it to a VFW or American Legion Post. Another option is to give it to a Boy Scout troop. All of these organizations have flag retirement ceremonies where the flags receive formal honors and are destroyed. This quote from the American Legion ceremony says much, ““A Flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great; but its real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for, and died for a free Nation of free men, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practice of Justice, Freedom and Democracy.” I hope you will all take some time on Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day to proudly display your patriotic appreciation and ride to one of the many civic and patriotic events where remembrance and honor will be the call of the day. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. — Bulldog

“Lay Aside Your Garments”

When God first called me to pastor an all “Biker Church” He instructed me to do something that I have never seen other pastors do; “To wash the feet of everyone who joined this Church and everyone who wears a Covenant Confirmers Patch-M/C or M/M.” We started this Ministry at my dining room table with only six other people. I have seen people come and go, some have stayed and have been a real blessing to the Ministry, some I was glad to see go! But I did as God directed me and have washed the feet of everyone that has come into this Ministry. As the years roll by I can see the importance and why God would call me to do this “foot washing ministry.” Now I’ll share this very important revelation with you. There are some key points that need to be brought out in this scripture in John 13: 1-5 1) “Jesus knew that His hour was come” 2) “And supper being ended” 3) “He rises from supper” 4)“Laid aside His garments” 5)“Took a towel” 6)“Girded himself” 7)“Began to wash the disciples feet” 8)“Wiped them with the towel wherewith He was girded.” He knew his final hours had come. What would be on your “bucket list” if you knew you had but a few days left to live? Jesus didn’t try and teach them some deep revelation, teach them how to raise the dead, or what we might think was important, Jesus taught them the most important lesson of all, “How To Serve.” The generations of today have forgotten how to serve, forgotten how to work, they are very selfish and when life demands something from them, they cry “abuse.” First; Jesus knew His hour was come; He taught them the most important lesson of all, how to serve! Second; Supper being ended; there comes a time when Christians have to stop trying to be so spiritual and deep, take what they have learned and apply it to their lives. If all we ever do is eat and never exercise what we have digested, we become fat, obsessed, and no good to anyone. 26

Third; He rises from supper; we Christians need to understand that all this preaching, singing, praying that we receive is to be used to help others, not to make us appear “holier than thou” Forth; Laid aside His garments; God laid aside His divinity when He came to earth for mankind. Fifth; Took a towel; this towel represents servant hood, ready to serve any and everybody Sixth; Girded Himself; this is an illustration of God putting on flesh to serve mankind. Seventh; He began to wash the disciple’s feet; this was the lowest job that a slave could have, to get down on the floor on your knees and wash the dirty feet of everyone that entered into a home Eighth; Wiped them with the towel wherewith He was girded; The king of Kings, Lord of Lords got down on His knees, washed their feet, and then dried them with servant hood that He came to do. Most Christians today focus on what God can do for them, heal-deliver-prosper-joy-peace and save from hell. All they want to do is eat at the supper table and never do anything for God. Most of our prayers are about what God can do for us, but the real question is “just what have you done for God?” This is not about you coming to church, giving offerings, that’s “Your reasonable service.” Selfish people never serve. Vs.14 “If I, your lord & master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” “Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

A man died in a horrible fire. The mortician thought it was Bubba, but the body was so badly burned that somebody would need to make a positive identification. That task fell to Bubba’s two friends, Joe and Wally. Joe: “He’s burnt pretty bad, all right. Roll him over.” Joe looked at the dead man’s buttocks and said, “Nope, that ain’t Bubba.” Thinking the incident strange, the mortician straightened up the body and said nothing. He brought in Wally. Wally: “Wow, he’s burnt to a crisp. Roll him over.” Again, “Nope, that ain’t Bubba.” Mortician: “How can you tell?” Wally: “Bubba had two assholes.” Mortician: “What? How could he have two assholes?” Wally: “Everybody knew Bubba had two assholes. Whenever the three of us would go into town you’d hear people say, “Here comes Bubba with the two assholes!” A sexually active, middle-aged woman, informed her plastic surgeon that she wanted her vaginal lips reduced in size because, over the years, they had become loose and floppy. Out of embarrassment, she insisted that the surgery be kept a secret and, of course, the surgeon agreed. Awakening from the anesthesia after surgery, she found 3 red roses carefully placed beside her on the bed. Outraged, she immediately called in the Surgeon. “I thought I specifically asked you not to tell anyone about my operation!” The Surgeon told her he had carried out her wish for confidentiality and that the first rose was from him. “I felt compassion for you, because you went through this all by yourself.” “The second rose is from my Nurse. She assisted me in the surgery and understood perfectly, as she had the same procedure done some years ago. The woman had calmed down considerably and was actually feeling grateful for all these caring people. “And what about the third rose?” she inquired. “Oh, that’s from a man upstairs in the Burn Unit he wanted to thank you for his new ears.” I’m reaching out on behalf of a buddy of mine who needs some help! His wife told him to go out & get some of those pills that would help him get an erection. When he came back, he handed her some diet pills. Anyway, he’s looking for a place to live. A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband’s temper. The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem? 34

3-D HEAD CUSTOM PAINT® KNOXVILLE, TN 865-621-9836 Ask for KENNY or TONY

The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason, and it scares me.” The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or goes to bed and falls asleep.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor, looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut for long periods of time that does the trick....” Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna’s heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, ‘Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you’re being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love... I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so saddened, but he’s dead.’ Edna replied, ‘He didn’t hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?’ LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE, BIKERS!

The Honor Release Return “Freedom March” By Bob “Bulldog” Ousley

On April 9th, 2013, a group of advocates for American prisoners of war descended on Washington DC to march and bring attention to American service members who have been left behind as prisoners of war at the end of conflicts. The event was organized by Honor Release Return, Inc. a new organization formed to bring prisoner of war/missing in action (POW/MIA) activist groups together and gain action on bringing home the missing. The day began with everyone gathering in front of the Lincoln Memorial on a picture perfect day with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool glistening in bright sunlight. The groups split into smaller groups to carry wreaths to the Vietnam Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. The wreaths were placed with great respect and honor to commemorate dedication to bringing home those left behind. Then we walked to the World War II memorial and laid a wreath there. Each group paid honors to those who have not returned and said a prayer for their safety and peace for their families. The crowd of Washington visitors joined in with silent respect for the sacrifice of those who went to war and vanished. There are still approximately 73,600 missing from World War II, 7,900 38

missing from the Korean War, 1,600 missing from the Vietnam War and 6 missing from Iraq and other conflicts. While many who attended are motorcyclists and wore their vests, the uniform of the day was blue “Bring Bowe Home” t-shirts and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flags. The T-shirts are just one of the many ways veterans and concerned citizens around the country are showing public support for bringing Bowe Bergdahl home. Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl was captured June 30, 2009 and remains in captivity with the Haqqani Network near the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s important we bring him home before the troops are pulled out. As we walked the two miles to Congress we passed thousands of people who had come to Washington DC on vacation or to see the cherry Blossoms in bloom. A majority waved, took pictures and asked about the march. When they learned the number still missing most were shocked. Many Americans just assume that we bring everyone home when a war or conflict ends but that is not the case. As time goes by and the world gets smaller we learn more about those who have not returned. It’s hard for many to understand how we could leave them behind in the first place let alone ignore the

information about those who still survive. The list of speakers included Mike Benge, Prisoner of War, Vietnam, 28 Jan.’68 – 5 Mar. ’73. Mike was a civilian contractor who was captured while making sure his fellow workers escaped advancing forces. Larry Stark, Prisoner of War, Vietnam, 1 Feb. ’68 – 5 Mar. ’73. Larry makes annual trips to Southeast Asia gathering information on the missing and trying to pinpoint those still held in camps. He is certain that several live prisoners could be purchased from corrupt guards for a reasonable amount of money and political asylum. Carmel Whetzel, WWII, Prisoner of War, Germany, 7 Nov. ’44 – 1 May ’45, told us about his capture by the Germans and how he escaped once for three weeks before being recaptured. All of the speakers made a plea to do whatever is necessary to bring home the missing, especially those who still survive. Bob Bergdahl, father of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, told about his son’s capture in a remote area of Afghanistan gave a very personal and passionate speech for his return. He had received information within the past couple of weeks that Bowe is alive and being treated reasonably well, all things considered. He said that one of the pictures released by his captures did seem to show a bruise on Bowe’s face that looked like it was made by a rifle butt but reassured us his son was an airborne soldier and tough enough to take it.

May 2013

Bowe was an outgoing kid who was home schooled, helped his neighbors and prayed before eating. He earned money before joining the military as a river rafting guide and a shooting instructor. He excelled in the military and was scheduled for Special Forces training when he finished his tour in Afghanistan. Many will be going to Hailey, Idaho for a major Bring Bowe Home event June 29th. You can find out more on this important event and how to help Bowe at www. bringhomebowe.com. Other speakers included Roger Hall, POW/MIA activist who told us about his quest to obtain classified reports and information being held on live Prisoners of War. Bob ‘Bulldog’ Ousley, Major, US Army (Retired) and former Special Operations aviator, read the Honor Release Return list of demands to bring the missing home and made a fiery speech that had the crowd really pumped for action. Longtime advocate Ted Schpak talked about efforts to pass legislation to insure no soldier is ever left behind again. The sound system in front of the Congress was loud and every word echoed off the windows of the capitol. The first amendment right of free speech was tested and affirmed. We even got some high fives from the Capitol Police. As we get closer to Memorial Day please plan a moment of silence for those who’ve sacrificed so much to make it safe for you to stand in the sun, BBQ a burger and sip on something cold with family and friends. Think about those who’ve not come home and try to imagine what it would be like if it were your son or daughter who was missing in action or possibly held prisoner in a foreign land. Who will speak for them and who will stand for them if not you. If not now, when? “Until They All Come Home” — Bulldog

Certainly, the Victory Vision is in a class all of its own in terms of styling. It’s futuristic design and flowing lines were a shock for many, but their undeniable popularity and growing fan base have clearly supported Victory’s commitment to the look. It’s remain unchanged since first introduced.
