CALENDAR OF EVENTS LISTINGS Contact: Mechele “Me-Mac” MacDaniel, Events Calendar Administrator for TRM 615-496-1493 or, e-mail them to: events@thunderroadstennessee.com What’s on the site goes in the mag! I can say with all honesty that I pray there will be a Letter From The Editor for October issue… …I’m going skydiving! (gulp!) But hey, confront your fears and conquer head on right. After all, my sign is that of a Ram. Our one son, Joey (another Ram), is going with me and his buddy, Johnny. It’s a tandem jump so I’m leaving it to the pros and just wanting to enjoy the scenery. I had planned on jumping right after Joey as he went about a year ago, but now have plans on jumping last just to see Johnny’s reaction and if they actually have to pry his fingers from the jump door as he’s truly “skeered” but is going none the less. Will be a fun and funny-ass day. We are covered up with GREAT articles this month so this issue is definitely a keeper. We have a new, roaming Photojournalist who will be covering many of the west area rallies; Dottie Rankin, who just called me out of the blue one day and said she was headed to Sturgis and would we be interested in a professional article, complete with pro shots. Hell to the Yes! And look at our Cover. It is one of my all-time favorites. It just screams Biker Comradeship. And that is what THUNDER ROADS is all about, across this great USA. Also had one of the most fun-filled and positive days at APPLETON’S 60th Anniversary Salute to Bikers Everywhere. Who knew?.......Arm wrestling is back with a vengeance and it is so damn cool to watch the competitors and all those hot, sweaty guys straining their biceps….. whew! easy girl…slow down. Check out the article and collage page inside this issue.

And, last but by no means least, ever, is our beloved STURGIS KENTUCKY BIKE RALLY (aka to all us rally vets as Lil’ Sturgis). But love the new name as it says exactly what it is; a major Bike Rally in Sturgis, Kentucky. Carlene & Bill Thomas (Owners/Promoters) are two of the hardest working people in the biker industry today (takes two to recognize two) and we love the fact that they swept in and didn’t let the Lil’ Sturgis Rally go down and vowed to make it better than ever and keep it going strong and long. They have definitely kept their vow to the bikers. Props to you both. We’re headed to cover O.C. Bikefest in Maryland this month and then “Thunder Pete” will proudly be at Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs on October 20th as the “Cool Team” are host to Bubba Blackwell. See you there! We love you bikers. toni & brian

FLASHBACK

Hello TRM readers! We have not had a Flashback in months so it is my pleasure to share a brief glimpse of one of S & G Custom Cycles’ customers, Mr. Robert Lee “RL” Castleman. Mr. Robert is a native of Martinsburg, WV who now resides in Historic Franklin, Tenn. Robert is like most people & has held many jobs over the years the longest of which was as an over the road truck driver. But he has had his best success with his long time side job, writing & making music. The truck was parked in 2002 after RL won a Grammy for penning Allison Krauss & Union Station’s big hit song, “The Lucky One.” RL first came to Music City in 1979 to seek out his big break. He was soon urged to go to NY because his style did not fit the mold of Country music then. He returned to Nashville in 1989 to work with guitar guru Chet Atkins. This got his foot in the door and he has since been nominated twice for Grammies along with writing many hit songs for Union Station along with numerous other artist such as Alan Jackson, Suzy Bogus, & more. During all this Robert has suffered with two wheel fever beginning with his first bike in 1971. He bought a 1961 Harley Davidson Due Glide full dresser for $1,100 at the age of 18. He spent the winter of 1971 chopping the bike & can be seen standing beside the results as a tall thin country boy eager to take on the world. The success Castleman has enjoyed in the last decade has afforded him the pleasure of indulging in his two wheel fever of buying & customizing old Harleys. (When we first met Robert he was involved in buying,

restoring, & selling vintage parlor stoves. Some can be seen at S & G Cycles in Columbia.) Robert has created one bad ass show winning1947 Harley Knucklehead, with a lovely young lady from the “Twin Peaks Resturaunt” sitting on it, & a cool 1961 Harley Panhead. He also has a sweet all original 1942 Harley WLA that he purchased at the huge International Vintage Bike auction at S & G Custom Cycles in 2009. And if that were not impressive enough our 60 year old song writer can often be seen riding around Middle Tennessee astride his trusty 2008 Harley Road King. Ride on Mr Robert & keep making good music for us! If you, or know some one who, would like to be featured here please contact Rebel Ron at celticgranda2@yahoo.com or call 931-380-0202. See y’all later & ride safe!

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon of Tennessee These are just a few of the many, fabulous recipes on “The Chew” this week.

O.C. Bikefest PRETZEL COVERED PORK CHOPS 1 10 pack of center-cut pork loin chops *Pound them with meat mallot until 1/2” thick. 2 Eggs; lightly beaten 1/4 Cup of All-Purpose Flour 1-1/2 Cups of Sourdough Pretzels; pulsed in food processor, or just put in gallon size zip lock bag, leave open just a fraction and roll over & over with rolling pin until fine ground. 1/2 Stick of Butter Salt & Peper to Your Taste Set up 3 pie pan shape bowls; one filled with flour, one with beaten egg mixture and one with ground pretzels. Season your chops on both sides with S&P and any other spices you prefer; rosemary goes great w/ pork, as does mint or sage. Mix spices in a small bowl and rub all over chops. Meanwhile get a pan medium hot, but get it searing hot, drag all chops thru your three mixtures; First dredge in flour, then beaten egg bath, then onto pretzel dredge. Cover them thoroughly and pat them down into the pretzels to hold onto and cling to chops. Heat butter in a BIG skillet or an electric or flat electric skillet. Put them in when a drop of water in skillet jumps back; you want that nice sizzle when dropping your chops If you’re doing on grill, you can fit all of them in, otherwise, just do in (2) batches. When done place on plate covered with 3 sheets of paper towels to drain off excess grease. Keep in warm 200 oven until 2nd batch done. These are so crunchy outside and the pretzel flavor just soaks it all up, It’s easy to make, but baby, wayyyyyy easier to eat. These go quick! Go get ya’ some. CAULIFLOWER GRATIN (fancy name for cheese) 1 Head of Fresh Cauliflower (very inexpensive). Cut into cauliflower and cut up into clusters, like you’ve seen done to the frozen kind. 3 Tbls. of All-Purpose Flour 4 Tbls. of Real Butter or Quality Margarine (ICBINB)_ (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter) 2 Cups of Whole Milk Sprinkle gently with Nutmeg 1 Cup of Shredded Gruyere cheese Salt & Pepp\ter to Taste

Bring a large pot of salted water to a hard boil. Drop the clusters of cauliflower into boil. Don’t let go too long. About 5 mins. max. Make sure still stiff, don’t let it go limp on you (no woman appreciates that). Drain cauliflower and place into an ice bath to completely stop them from cooking any longer. In a saucepot, heat butter over medium heat. In a saucepan, heat up your butter or margarine, Mix it all around carefully until all flour incorporated; should be a gray-pale yellow color. Let this remain to cook down for about 2-3 minute to get that flour taste out. This process should be done fast and steady. Then, add your milk and nutmeg a little at a time while still whisking. Salt, Pepper & Nutmeg to taste. Next, add your cheese generously. Spread it all out. Place all in open lid casserole dish and bake for in a 300 degree oven for 30 minutes. Make sure the top gets brown & bubbly. Just be sure to layer the cheese & other ingredients but also have enough of the sauce to add as a dunk-in dip. This cheese gravy is actually perfect for the pork. O.C. Bikefest GRILLED WATERMELON 1 big, long, juicy watermelon Get a really good knife and make sure it’s sharp Cut deep into the wa watermelon several lines along the length, then cut across the other way to create a chess effect. I love to grill watermelon and get grill marks on it which makes it much sweeter and succulent. Now, while watermelon chunks on medium grill, remember, they don’t have to grill for long. Just throw together some fresh mint, garlic, olive oil, basil and mix it all up to pour over baby spinach or any lettuce of your desire. This is so refreshing and perfect for September evenings. CUCUMBER & HONEYDEW MARGARITA’S 2 Cups of Honeydew Melon 1 Cup pf Seedless, Peeled Cucumber plus extra round discs for garnish 1/4 cup of Mint 2 Tbls. Honey 1/2 Cup of Lime Juice 2 Cups of Tequila Take a Marqarita glass, slide a slitted cucumber all around rim of glass and dip into a flat plate of salt. Throw in a cup of cubed ice for frozen style or blend longer and just pour over cubes of ice. Either way goes down smoothas honey....dew.

SturgisAmbiance2012 Photographs and article submitted by: Dottie Rankin

What is the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally? Sturgis is all about motorcycles first and foremost, but Sturgis is also a diverse yet definite community, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a deeply personal experience but mostly, Sturgis is whatever you want it to be. People come to experience the hoopla that is synonymous with Sturgis, to escape, to be noticed, to make a fortune or lose a fortune, to party, to find the best assortment of music around, to meet old friends, to make new friends or simply to absorb the ambience. If you are called to a destination filled with camaraderie, freedom, celebration and endless variety, at least for rally week where ever you are from, all roads lead to Sturgis The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a significant event, that means there are motorcycles, lots of them. There are thousands of motorcycles that are as diverse as their owners, the bikes are more often than not, extensions of their owners personalities. It is as fun to walk around and look at the bikes as it is to gawk at the people who ride them. There are all makes and models of motorcycles, everything you can imagine and some you can’t. We gather at Sturgis to learn about and probably most importantly celebrate the motorcycle culture. This is a culture born and bred

of motorcycles, this is the world of motorcycling at its best. There is nothing easy, normal or boring during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. With that many people in one small town, things get a little complicated. You don’t ride your bike through town, you walk your bike a good portion of the time. Just getting gas takes a considerable chunk of time, bikes are lined up at every available pump, well heck, bikes are everywhere. Motel rooms, if you can find one, go for hundreds of dollars. Campgrounds are filled to the brim, bars and restaurants are stacked 20 deep with people. It’s a freaking awesome experience that I recommend everyone participate in at least once! Whatever it is you come to Sturgis for, you are sure to meet some interesting people. There is an exuberance, audacity and nonconformity to the people of Sturgis. There were wet t-shirt contests, people with fur attached to various parts of their body, entrepreneurs willing to bare their body for a buck, and lots of scantily clad beauties selling motorcycles. I came across two men who found each other again after working together overseas twelve years ago. The last I heard final figures were not in but the estimates were around 500,000 people attended the rally. Guess we will tune in for the official final count. Let’s talk music for a minute. If your passion is music like it is mine, Nowhere will you find such a garden of delight to romp in. Another thing Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is synonyms with is promoting great musical talent. I found artists from the well known like The Zac Brown Band, Shooter Jennings, Eric Church, Joe Nichols, and Sugarland all the way down to the lesser known but no less talented bands. Those that really struck my fancy this year were the Judge Jackson band from LA and The Glass Onion from York NE. Although many other bands that were there would keep me happily occupied if only I had time to take them all in. I got up close and personal with the lead singer from The Glass Onion when he decided to dance on my table plus I got a chance to talk to all the members of the

2

Judge Jackson Band, these guys can rock the house and put on a tremendous live show. I am musically satisfied. There is more to the Sturgis experience than the fun and the party. Everywhere I looked it seemed I was looking at police or security. Sturgis hires officers from eight different states during rally week. The exact number is hard to determine but is considerably larger than the 15 officers that regularly patrol the streets of Sturgis. Considering the population grows from around 6700 the rest of the year, to somewhere short of astronomical I guess that makes sense. The Sturgis Police Department has a cool motto, “You can run but you will just go to jail tired. I have to admit that to really experience Sturgis you need to stay close by. There is no such thing as a cheap motel room anywhere even remotely close to Sturgis so that left us with one option, camping. Someone knew of a place on Junction Ave and Douglas where we could pitch a tent at a bargain price ($30 a night). So we literally set up camp in the lawn of a dental office. There are dozens and dozens of camp grounds available during rally week. From the well known, like the gargantuan Buffalo Chip that is a local and national legend, to local homeowners and businesses who rent out their lawns. If you are lucky enough to make it to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally you are going to find out pretty quickly that the actual rally is no longer confined to just Sturgis. Part of the lure of the rally is the beautiful riding in the area. We decided to take a day trip to the Black Hills. Our journey took us to Pactola Reservoir, Mt Rushmore, Keystone, Iron

Mountain Road, Custer State Park and Needles Highway Needles highway on any other day would be on my list for top roads to ride but the day we decided to ride it so did a few thousand other rally goers, plus it was raining. I wish I could find the right words to describe the exquisite torture that riding that road in those conditions produced but I am still trying to unpucker. It would not be a true story about the ambiance of Sturgis without mentioning the vendors. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of vendors selling everything from food to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally souvenirs. It doesn’t matter what you are hungry for, they have it. It doesn’t matter what you don’t need to buy to tote home, they have it. The reason’s you go to Sturgis aren’t really important, the fact is you will find what you are looking for if you look hard enough. Go, have fun, be safe and above all, enjoy!

Mankind first learned to cover-up in the Garden of Eden and we have been doing it ever since. After God presented Eve to Adam, Adam said “Thank you Jesus!!” But soon after Adam ate of the forbidden fruit, he placed the blame on the woman and God, “this woman that thou gave me.” He covered it up. The Bible also said that “he shall not prosper” I wonder if that’s the reason why some Christians are broke, busted and disgusted? But God loves us enough to give us a way to clean up our cover-ups. “But whosoever CONFESSES and FORSAKES them (the cover-ups). This Greek word “Confesses” has two meanings: 1) To admit that you did it 2) To admit that you knew it was wrong when

you did it (no coverups) And the word “Forsakes” also has two meanings: 1) To turn away from 2) To leave behind you Some religions have taught us to Coverup our sins, to hide them from everybody and all we have to do is tell God that we are sorry and He has to forgive us, like a “get out of jail free card.” NOT SO! You have to stop the “Coverups” you have to “Confess” (consisting of two parts) and you have to “Forsake” (consisting of two parts) then you will “Prosper and have Mercy.” Mercy is God’s unmerited favor, to receive something you did not deserve, earn or born into. The Bible also states that “God’s Mercy is renewed everyday,” and it is, but it is not available to everybody, it is only available to those that don’t “Cover-Up,” and to those that “Confess, and forsake sin.” This is why some Christians look like broken down cars on the side of the road; it is still a car but it’s not going anywhere, it can’t go forward and can’t go backward, it’s just stuck in a rut. 1st John 1:9 “If we CONFESS our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The key words here are “If we confess” and IF we do this right, we get “Forgiveness and Cleansing.” In the book of Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:” We can’t use the excuse “Lord I didn’t know,” That won’t hunt today, there are churches on every corner, Christian TV networks, Christian book stores, Christian radio stations every where. The second part of this verse: “because thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject you.” To refuse to go to Church, refuse to study God’s Word, and refuse to spend time in prayer with our Heavenly Father is “rejecting knowledge.” Let’s stop the cover-ups, start confessing and forsaking our sins, and start obtaining knowledge of God. “Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

Valerie Thompson To Compete at Three Bonneville Land Speed Racing Events for First Time As Team Owner & Driver

Three-Time Land Speed Record Holder Hopes to Set New Records at the Salt Flats (Scottsdale, AZ) –August 7, 2012 – Valerie Thompson, 3-Time Land Speed Record Holder and owner/driver of the Valerie Thompson Racing Team, is set to compete at Speed Week (August 11-17) and the BUB Speed Trials (August 25-30) at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The team also plans to compete in the September 8-11 World of Speed event, pending additional sponsorship funding. This will be Thompson’s first time competing at Speed Week and World of Speed; the Southern California timing Association (SCTA) sanctions both events. Thompson’s first visit to the Salt Flats was in 2005 when she ran in the ‘Run-Whatcha-Brung’ class, reaching a top speed of 153.561. Like many first timers at Bonneville, she left with a severe case of “salt addiction.” Keith Ball hired Thompson to drive the Bikernet.com sponsored Panhead Harley-Davidson in 2006 & 2007, setting new records both years. The 2011 BUB Speed Trials was her first Bonneville competition with a BMW S1000RR with sponsorship funding from CTEK Battery Chargers. This year will be Thompson’s first time competing as both a teamowner & driver. “I am so fortunate to have support from great sponsors like Martech Services Company and CTEK. I’ve always used CTEK for my bikes since they make the smartest battery chargers in the world,” said Thompson. “I would not be able to achieve the level of performance I have this year without our sponsors, I can’t thank them enough for their loyalty and support,” added Thompson One of Thompson’s goals since her first sojourn to Bonneville is gaining entry into the ‘Bonneville 200 MPH Club,’ which has fewer than 25 female members since it was formed in 1953. “I’ve driven

the BMW to over 209 mph on a paved course, but exceeding 200 mph on salt is no easy feat, especially on just two-wheels. It would be a dream come true and a real honor to be a member of the 200 mph club at Bonneville,” stated Thompson. To generate additional financial support, Thompson is utilizing GoFundMe.com to reach individuals who want to help the team set new land speed records. For details, visit http://www. gofundme.com/Valerie-Thompson-Racing. Valerie Thompson Background Thompson is owner/driver of the Valerie Thompson Land Speed Racing Motorcycle Team. She holds two land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats and a third from the 2012 Ohio Mile. Thompson has also competed in the All Harley Drag Racing Association & National Hot Rod Association series. Thompson’s sponsors include Martech Services Company – maker of quality air breathing products, CTEK Battery Chargers, La-Man Corporation, Troon Enterprises, Stay Fast Custom Clothing, GO AZ Motorcycles of Scottsdale, Metro Auto Auctions, Swisstrax Interlocking Flooring, JEGS, Vortex Racing, Worldwide Bearings, Stand Up Photos, AAMCO Transmissions & Total Car Care-Phoenix, Hyperpro Performance Suspension Products, Shorai Battery, and ZipFizz Healthy Energy Drink. A husband and wife were sitting watching a TV program about psychology which was explaining the phenomenon of “mixed emotions”. The husband turned to his wife and said, “That is an absolute bunch of crap. I bet you can’t tell me one thing that will make me happy and sad at the exact same time. She said: “Out of all your friends, you have the biggest penis.” A married couple is driving down the interstate doing 55 mph. The husband is behind the wheel. His wife looks over at him and says, “Honey, I know we’ve been married for 15 years, but, I want a divorce.” The husband says nothing but slowly increases speed to 60 mph. She then says, “I don’t want you to try to talk me out of it, because I’ve been having an affair with your best friend, and he’s a much better lover than you.” Again the husband stays quiet and just speeds up as his anger increases. She says, “I want the house.” Again the husband speeds up, and now is doing 70 mph. She says, “I want the kids, too.” The husband just keeps driving faster, and faster, now he’s up to 80 mph. She says, “I want the car, the checking account, and all the credit cards, too.” The husband slowly starts to veer toward a bridge overpass piling, as she says, “Is there anything you want?” The husband says, “No, I’ve got everything I need.” She asks, “What’s that?” The husband replies just before they hit the wall at 90 mph, “I’ve got the airbag!” The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30” she said proudly, “My sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.” “Very good”, said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. “I sold magazines” she said, “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.” “Very good, Debbie”, said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the

teacher’s desk. “$2,467.”, he said.”$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?” ”‘Toothbrushes”, said Little Johnny. “How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?” “Well, I found the busiest corner in town”, said Little Johnny, “I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample. “They all said the same thing, “Hey, this tastes like dog poop!” Then I would say, “It is dog poop. Wanna’ buy a toothbrush? While examining his lady patient, the doctor tells her: “Your heart, lungs, pulse & BP are fine. Now let me see that cute little thing which gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble.” The woman a tad turned on by the young doctor starts quickly taking off her slacks and panties and is standing nude from the waist down. The Doctor turned around , stopping her and said: “No! No! Please put on your clothes. I meant for you to just show me your tongue.” Steel Cowboy’s Tombstone: The Headstone of Russell J. Larsen in the Logan City Cemetery , Logan , Utah . I wonder if he died knowing he won the ‘Coolest Headstone’ contest? His five rules for a happy life are at the bottom in on his headstone FIVE RULES FOR MEN TO FOLLOW FOR A HAPPY LIFE: 1. It’s important to have a woman who helps at home, cooks from time to time, cleans up, and has a job. 2. It’s important to have a woman who can make you laugh. 3. It’s important to have a woman who you can trust, and doesn’t lie to you. 4. It’s important to have a woman who is good in bed and truly likes to be with you. 5. It’s very, very important that these four women do not know each other or you could end up dead like me. My wife was screaming at me: “Leave!! Get out of this house!” she ordered. As I was walking out the door she yelled, “I hope you die a slow and painful death!” So I turned around and replied “So now you want me to stay?”

in several other area cities, and placing the signs on county highways has also been endorsed by the Kenosha County Highway Department director.

FEDERAL E-15 MINIMUM FUEL PURCHASE MANDATE “However inconceivable it may seem, ethanol has managed to earn itself another enemy. To service-station owners, refiners, vintage-car collectors, economists and car manufacturers themselves, add motorcycle riders,” reported the New York Times in announcing a new EPA mandate that requires consumers to purchase a minimum of 4 gallons of E-15 gasoline.

FROM THE GUNNY’S SACK: CALIFORNIA Transponds: California requires a transponder when travelling on toll roads, mounted on your vehicle in a visible location. This is a real problem for motorcycles. Where do you mount the things to be in plain sight? This has been corrected by AB1890, introduced by Assemblyman Jose Solorio. The bill was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown and allows motorcyclists to store their transponders out of sight in a pouch or saddlebags when on toll roads. This reduces the probability of theft from being mounted in a visible location on a motorcycle.

At issue is E15, a gasoline blend consisting of 15% ethanol, rather than the typical 10% formulation E10. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved E15 for all cars from the 2001 model year and newer, but the E.P.A. has not approved its use for any motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles and its use could void manufacturers’ warranties. To help keep E15 out of these and other unapproved nonroad engines, service stations offering E15 and E10 from the same pump station must agree to sell a minimum of 4 gallons of fuel per purchase in order to protect the engine of the next customer’s vehicle, as the fueling hose retains roughly a third of a gallon from the previous customer’s fill-up. But not all motorcycle fill-ups reach four gallons, as some motorcycles don’t have tanks with that volume, or their owners may want to merely top them off. Exactly how a service station with pay-at-the-pump equipment could enforce the rule remains unclear, and the new EPA requirement announced in a response to an AMA inquiry is already generating ire on Capitol Hill where Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) told the Times; “The E.P.A. has no business mandating how much gasoline Americans have to buy when filling up at the pump. What if a rider doesn’t have a motorcycle with a four gallon tank,” he challenged. “Or if someone wants to fill a canister for their lawnmower or outboard boat engine, but it only holds two or three gallons? Or what if an American, struggling in this economy, just can’t afford four gallons of gas?” ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES EXTENDED TAX CREDIT Good news for eco-minded aficionados of two-wheeled transport, as the Senate Finance Committee has approved a tax credit for purchasers of on-road electric motorcycles amounting to 10% of the purchase price up to $2,500. Electric-powered two wheelers have been without a federal purchase incentive since the beginning of 2012, when the original tax break expired that was part of the $800 billion stimulus package passed in 2009. The committee approved a bipartisan package of tax credits on August 2, including the amendment by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) to extend the tax credit for buying EV bikes designed for street use. With “thousands of red white and blue jobs on the line” in America’s cutting edge E-bike industry, Wyden says the tax break is necessary and will cost $15 million over two years. Now the measure will be considered by the full Senate. “LOOK TWICE” IN WISCONSIN An effort by ABATE of Wisconsin to place signs that build awareness of motorcyclists among other motorists continues to gain momentum, and the group hopes to take the project statewide. When Mike Halvorson, representing a local chapter of ABATE, approached the Silver Lake Village Board about accepting the donation of two of the motorcycle awareness signs and placing them on appropriate village roads, the board accepted the donation of the signs. The blue, reflective signs say “Look Twice, Save a Life” and have a graphic of a motorcyclist. “Our feeling is if they are looking out for us they are looking out for the bikes and pedestrians too,” Halvorson said. The ABATE group has now reached agreement to place signs

EDITOR’S NOTE: Gunny Hutcheson is retiring at the end of the year after serving nearly 20 years as the AIM Chief of Staff in Oregon for AIM Attorney Sam Hochberg, and everyone at Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) THANK him for his years of dedication to bikers’ rights & safety and we wish him All the Best! CHICAGO TEAM LICENSE PLATES AVAILABLE FOR ILLINOIS MOTORCYCLISTS Chicago fans among the state’s 350,000 motorcyclists now can pay homage to their favorite pro sports teams thanks to a new law signed by Governor Pat Quinn on August 9. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, a former minor league baseball player in the Cubs organization, will make the new specialty license plates available for North Side fans as well as White Sox fans on the South Side. Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks plates also will be offered when pre-orders begin Aug. 24 at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Money from the sales is earmarked to support schools. More than 18,000 sports team license plates have been sold to people driving cars, vans, pick-ups and other small trucks in less than two years, bringing in almost $800,000 for schools. “I am proud to make these license plates available to motorcycle enthusiasts as a means of showing team spirit and further supporting education across the state,” White told the Chicago Tribune in announcing his expansion of the sports-plate program to include motorcycles. NADAguides RELEASES LATEST MOTORCYCLE TRENDS The latest data regarding motorcycle shopping and research trends has been released from NADAguides, an online new and used powersports pricing and information resource. And though the economy has yet to recover from the slump, consumer interest and motorcycle sales are gradually increasing. The Motorcycle Industry Council says overall worldwide year-on-year motorcycle sales are up 3.6%, and NADAguides research shows that consumer interest and research has grown 15% in the second quarter of 2012 over the second quarter of 2011. NADAguides says the largest segments receiving growth and interest are trikes and touring scooters with a step-through chassis. Industry sales of touring scooters are up 5.6% year-to-date and have recorded a year over year traffic increase on NADAguides.com of 24% over the past year. Touring scooters provide a good starting point for consumers who are new to motorcycling because they have more stability and are easy to mount and dismount, and top brands searched on NADAguides.com include models from Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Vespa, making up 96% of the traffic in the segment. NADAguides analysts note that trikes or three-wheel motorcycles are also gaining in popularity, registering a year over year increase of traffic on the site up 27%. Appealing primarily to the baby boomer generation, three-wheel motorcycles offer more stability, more comfort for long trips and can be customized and outfitted with a variety of comfort and convenience packages, such as independent suspension, disc brakes, upgraded audio, large lockable storage and more. Top trike or three-wheel motorcycle brands searched on NADAguides.com include models from Can-Am, Harley-Davidson, Boss Hoss and Lehman Trikes, making up 93% of the traffic in the segment.

SLEEPY DRIVERS AS DANGEROUS AS DRUNKS AIM-2622-F-Ad for Tennessee.indd 1 Being sleepy behind the wheel is almost as dangerous as drinking and driving, according to a study from France, with drivers who were either drunk or sleepy at least twice as likely to cause a vehicle accident as their sober or well-rested counterparts. For the study, researchers under the direction of Nicholas Moore at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire de Bordeaux analyzed information from 679 drivers admitted to a hospital in southwestern France for more than 24 hours because of a serious accident between 2007 and 2009. “Sleepiness carried almost as much risk as alcohol ingestion,” wrote Moore and his colleagues in a letter in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers used information from driver questionnaires and police reports to determine what may have contributed to the accidents. Drivers reported what medications they were on, their alcohol use and how sleepy they had been before the crash, while patient files provided information on blood alcohol levels. The majority of the injured drivers were under 55 years old and men. Over half were on a motorcycle, about one-third in a car and 10% on a bicycle at the time of the accident. The police determined that 355 of the drivers were responsible for their crash. From that, Moore and his colleagues found that being between the ages of 18 and 29 years old, driving a car, drinking alcohol and being sleepy were all tied to an increased risk of causing an accident. “We know from experimental studies that just four hours of sleep loss will produce as much impairment as a six pack (of beer),” said Christopher Drake, an associate scientist at the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Detroit, who was not involved in the study. “If you have a whole night of sleep loss, that’s equivalent to having a blood alcohol content of 0.19,” Drake told Reuters news service. A blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent is considered legally drunk in most U.S. states. RIGHTS ACTIVISTS LABELLED TERRORISTS Long-serving National Coalition of Motorcyclists board member Glen Fengstad of ABATE of Montana (Co-Director, NCOM Region III) submitted the following news item from www.rt.com along with the observation that “I think it targets all of us to a tee”: Are you suspicious of federal authority? How about really into individual liberty? Well according to a new study funded by the US Department of Homeland Security, you very well might be a terrorist. A report published earlier this year by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland has surfaced, and in their DHS-funded findings, Americans “reverent of individual liberty” and others adamant about protecting their personal freedoms

(800) ON-A-BIKE

are categorized as extreme right-wing terrorists.

11/1/11 5:06 PM

In the paper, “Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States, 1970-2008”, researchers characterize what traits should be considered when describing right-wing terrorists, and identifies “groups that believe that one’s personal and/or national ‘way of life’ is under attack,” and those that are “suspicious of centralized federal authority” and “believe in conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to personal liberty,” the report adds. START was founded with the aid of a $12 million DHS grant, and their most recent report is described by its authors as the latest part in a series of studies sponsored by the Human Factors/ Behavioral Sciences Division, Science and Technology Directorate and the US Department of Homeland Security in support of the Counter-IED Prevent/Deter program: “The goal of this program is to sponsor research that will aid the intelligence and law enforcement communities in identifying potential terrorist threats,” write the authors, which is done “using state-of-the-art theories, methods and data from the social and behavioral sciences to improve understanding of the origins, dynamics and social and psychological impacts of terrorism.” Apparently, loving America is precisely one of those factors found out through the latest space-age understanding of the human mind. WEIRD NEWS: MIND-READING HELMET Speaking of the human mind, and conspiracy theories, perhaps the latest interrogation device -- a mind-reading helmet -- will help authorities identify us freedom-loving “terrorist” bikers. Veritas Scientific is working on an EEG helmet that carries a slideshow of images that could reliably identify an enemy. The device is shaped like a motorcycle-helmet with metal brush sensors that will read brain activity as images flash quickly across the inside of the visor. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the science of measuring brainwave patterns produced by the brain in response to internal or external stimuli. Familiar images prompt spikes of electrical brain activity that indicate recognition, say scientists. The company places its EEG helmet work in the realm of “interrogation technology,” and sees its device of use to the U.S. military to help them pick friend from enemy…sure, that’s just what they want you to believe! The technology is also suggested as useful for law enforcement. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: September is my favorite month of the year. The weather is still great for riding, my birthday is in September and there are a lot of quality events to attend on a bike. I want to let you know about three events happening this month. The Blue Hole Nitro Blast, the Cost of Freedom tribute in Johnson City and The Ride Home. Some of you remember my article last year touting the Blue Hole Nitro Blast. It’s back this year on September 21 -23, 2012. There are cash prizes in each class, primitive camping, food, music, vendors and lots of nitro blasting excitement. Take I-40 Exit 143 South, go 1 mile and turn right when you see Hot Rods and Cadillac’s onto Cuba Landing Road. Ride the gravel until you see a couple of folks under a pop up collecting admission. If you plan to camp, electricity is limited and it’s suggested you call ahead, ask for John at 615-715-7165. The event is hosted by the Dickson /Humphrey/Hickman CMT Abate. Enjoy sky high dirt rooster tails on the banks of the Buffalo River. Say hi to Sam and Judy Haskins when you get there. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute called “Cost of Freedom” will be in Johnson City at University Parkway Baptist church off I-26 at exit 24, September 10-15, 2012. This tribute includes the Vietnam Traveling Wall, special tributes to WWII and the Korean War, 9/11, Fort Hood attack, events between Vietnam and 9/11, the War on Terror, Law Enforcement and Firefighters. Displays will include copies of our country’s founding documents, art, memorabilia and bios of all of our Presidents. If you have a loved one lost in the Vietnam War you’ll be able to find them on the wall and take a rubbing of their name. They say the wall is a healing wall and it never ceases to touch my heart whenever I see it. I know there are many Vietnam veterans and family members who have not been who would receive the healing experience if they attended. I’ll be one of the featured speakers

for the opening ceremonies and I hope you’ll come hear Bulldog’s bark. There will be a motorcycle escort of the Wall when it arrives that departs Exit 4 on Interstate 81at 2pm on Monday the 10th and everyone is invited. This will be one of our state’s biggest Vietnam Wall events ever with between 30,000 and 50,000 people expected to attend over the five days. “As long as you remember, they are not forgotten.” I’ll be in Americus, Georgia, 20-22 September, for “The Ride Home,” a special weekend to honor all former Prisoners Of War and to remember those still Missing in Action hosted by the chapters of Rolling Thunder. The purpose of this national event is to invite former Prisoners of War (POW) and families of those Missing in Action (MIA) to the home of the National Prisoner of War museum for a weekend of honor and recognition commensurate with their extraordinary courage & valor. Activities and ceremonies take place at the Andersonville Civil War Cemetery/Prison Camp Park and Georgia Southwestern State University. The public is invited and welcome. You can find information on hotels, the event schedule, purchase banquet tickets and make donations at www. theridehome.com. Former prisoners of war are an underappreciated segment of the veteran community. The largest number of former prisoners still living are from World War Two but they won’t be with us much longer. The next largest group is from Vietnam but their numbers are getting smaller too. There is nothing more enlightening and enriching than being able to spend time with and listen to these men and women relate their personal stories and experiences. This is a bucket list event and I hope you will make the effort. It is well worth it. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. Bulldog
