CALENDAR OF EVENTS LISTINGS Contact: Mechele “Me-Mac” MacDaniel, Events Calendar Administrator for TRM 615-496-1493 or, e-mail them to: events@thunderroadstennessee.com What’s on the site goes in the mag! HEY, BIKERS! Wow…..JUNE, already and so many phenom. Bike Nites @ Silverado’s (see ad) or major Rallies such as West TN Valley Rally (see ad), and Bumpus of Murfreesboro Bike Show; June 8th. As I’m writing this our big H.O.G. State Rally, being hosted at Smoky Mountain H.D. in Maryville, has not yet happened, but we’ll be there and have a great article and pics for our July issue. Totally looking forward to that. Great bunch of folks! We adore H.O.G. The Post Master (Nancy) that works our little satellite Post Office near home showed me a brochure that she wants to purchase a new Yamaha Bolt and I was looking at it and damn……it is totally rockin’. And I believe that if you love bikes, while you have your favorite brand, just like music, your mind is open enough to appreciate all different bikes for various reasons. I adore Harley’s, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate a Triumph or still love the Ducati’s, old Norton’s and Indian’s. It is the appreciation that is our common bond as bikers. We’ve got a new Sales Rep. for Clarksville; Dave Chester, his pic and number are on the Staff Page and Dave is a super guy who loves bikes, bikers and anything related to bikes. Our kinda’ guy, right? We haven’t known him long enough to give him a “road name”, but that’s something that will just reveal itself when it does. I’m thinkin’ “Ratchet” or something along those lines, cause’ seems like he’s always working on bikes. Cooper (Coop), our long-time friend and National Photojournalist to the mag, and his wife Judy (Jude) are going up to cover the 110th in Wisconsin, so am so looking forward to the best pics out there and a fab article. Cooper’s pics are always spot on and his eye for the shot is just a God given natural talent. Love you both.

APPLETON HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

SPRING OPEN HOUSE by: Kara Black

W

e look forward to our Spring Open House every year. It is the event that kick starts the riding season at Appleton Harley-Davidson! This year we had several things planned; an arm wrestling tournament, discontinued motor clothes up to 70% off, beer and food available for purchase, live music by Gypsy, A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac and door prizes on the hour, every hour. Even though rain came, that did not stop us from having a great event. People still came out to have a good time. However, we did reschedule the band, Gypsy, to play at a later date in July. We’ll keep you posted about the date change. You don’t want to miss this awesome band! The arm wrestling tournament had 250 entries, including 3 different classes, novice, open and women. Arm wrestlers traveled from across the United States to compete at Appleton’s

6

Arm Wrestling Pull! The food was provided by Meo Mio’s Cajun & Seafood Restaurant from Paris Landing Tennessee and the beer was provided by Budweiser. Getting pictures with customers and telling everyone about Appleton’s upcoming events, the Appleton Harley Hotties kept Spring Open House lookin’ good. Also set-up at the event, the Eagle Riders & the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3423. The Eagle Riders Group hosts an event every year, this being their 11th, to help raise money for children with terminal illnesses. For 2013, you can purchase $20 tickets to be in the drawing for a 2013 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. Join them July 27, 2013 for their Poker Run at the Western KY State Fairground Convention Center. Only 2,500 tickets are sold, so get to Appleton Harley-Davidson for your ticket today! Join us for all the parties at Appleton Harley-Davidson by checking out the event calendar at www.appletonharley.com or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

BLEU CHEESE & CRISPY BACON GUACAMOLE 3 Ripe Avocados; remove pit and scoop guac. into a medium, glass mixing bowl 1/2 Small Red Onion; minced fine 1 Small Jalapeno (seeds & rib removed; unless you like it REALLY hot! 2 Tbls. of Lime Juice and zest also Salt & Pepper to taste 3 Tbls. of chopped Cilantro (*optional) 1/2 Can of drained, petite diced tomatoes or real 1 Heaping Tbls. of Real Mayonnaise or Sour Cream *optional - some people prefer the strong taste of the Guacamole and more chunky, not creamy 1/2 Pound of Crispy Bacon; chopped into chunks 1/2 Cup of Crumbled Bleu Cheese As I’ve told you many times in the past; do not get yourself splattered and your stovetop a mess. Simply take a cookie pan with a wire cooling rack that fits it and lay your bacon out in strips; horizontally. Put into a 425 degree, pre-heated oven and let them cook for 15 minutes. Turn the light on to check how crispy but don’t keep opening door as lets out too much heat. Let them go till good and crispy. If you take them out and not crispy enough; turn them over and stick them back in for 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and then chop into chunks. No muss, no fuss. Save your grease as some cooks like to or pour into a can or container already in your garbage pail. This method works so good and you’ll never fry bacon again. Mix all the ingredients together first and then at the end, add your bacon and bleu cheese and mix in lightly. If you love bleu cheese and guacamole, this is totally aces! And who the hell doesn’t like bacon? I mean, that’s just whacked! This dip is addictive. WINGS, WANGS.......IT’S A CHICKEN THANG! 3 Lbs. of chicken wings 4 Cups of Peanut Oil - Heated HOT! Roll all your chicken in a rub of: Salt & Pepper to taste, 1 tsp. sugar, 1 Tbl. Smoked Paprika, Juice of 2 Limes and Lime Zest & 1/2 Cup Olive Oil. Really get in there and rub that chicken all over and coat every single piece. Place all in a big plastic bag, or two and marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hours. If you’re just itchin’ to go, then heat your oil and get on with it. June 2013

Be sure and place your oil in a deep pot. If you have one of those fry machines with the basket, you got it made. Fry up your chicken golden brown and then mix up the below listed ingredients in a big bowl and roll your fried chicken in it and again, make sure you get every single piece totally coated. 1/2 Sriracha (pronounced Siracha) in the Mexican aisle of any grocery store 1 Tbls. of Apple Cider Vinegar 2 Tbls Honey (add more if think needs it) Juice of 1/2 Lime & Zest Heat all these Wing/Wang Sauce and then add your wings and cluck away baby....cluck away. Serve hot, right out of the frying pot into the sauce bowl and onto the serving platter. Serve up with a big bowl of Bleu Cheese dressing or Ranch dressing and remember....wings aint good unless you’re wearin’ them all over your face! ICE-CREAM BALLS ROLLED IN FROSTED FLAKES & TOASTED COCONUT 1 Gallon of High-Quality Vanilla Ice Cream (you should do a test run on this and determine if 1 gallon gets you enough ice-cream balls to feed your guests) Let ice-cream set out for just about 5 minutes Take a regular ice-cream scoop; preferably one with a release lever Scoop a good solid ball; get in there and get one that’s all ice-cream and no air Lay them out onto a cookie sheet that’s been lined in Saran wrap so they won’t stick Scoop them out fast and lay them on the sheet and get them into the freezer FAST!!!! Let them freeze up for just one hour Take 2 Cups of Frosted Flakes cereal (they’re grrrrrrrrrreat!) put them in a gallon plastic bag and push out all the air and take a rolling pin or bottom of a small pan and crunch up. Then, take 2 cups of toasted coconut (regular coconut spread out on a cookie sheet and cook at 325 until browned all over) Take your ice-cream balls out of freezer, roll them in combined flakes & coconut until every inch covered and then freeze again for 1 hour. These are un-freakin’ real! Damn, I want some now. Back to the kitchen.

Title: “Is There Not A Cause” 1 Samuel 17: 20-29 we read about David being sent to bring lunch to his brothers at the battle between Israel and the Philistines. When he arrives at the battle he sees the Philistine’s champion the giant Goliath and heard the giant curse the army of Israel. Vs. 24 “And all the men of Israel when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.” This word “sore” in the Hebrew means sadness, misery. But when David heard the giant and saw the warriors of Israel back off in fear, he said to the army of Israel “who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” You see David was still a skinny teenage boy who had the lowest job of his family by attending the sheep in the fields. David had spent most of his life alone with the sheep and God out in the fields. David had not yet been contaminated with worldly fear. Some times it’s better to hang with the sheep than being with contaminated with worldly opinions. When you have a relationship with God, killing lions, bears and giants become the normal, be very careful that religion doesn’t contaminate you with their doubt and unbelief. David’s older brother heard what David had said and gave this response; “And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said; Why comest thou down here? And whom did thou leave those few sheep with in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou might see the battle.” Eliab was angry because his little brother just showed him and the army up. Eliab doubted David’s motive, shamed him with an accusation and demeaning David with the remark, “those few sheep.” David’s remark from past abuse; “what have I done now?” The ones that hurt you the most are usually those closest to you, family or friends. But David had 8

one of the mot remarkable responses in the entire Bible; “IS THERE NOT A CAUSE?” Every great person in history has tied themselves to a great cause. Greatness never goes on sale, it will cost you dearly. Anybody can be popular, but few are great. David left home that day as a Shepard boy but came home as the future King of Israel, because he attached himself to a cause bigger than himself. The problem with our society today is that everybody is selfish, only concerned about themselves and is not committed to any cause however small or large it may be. The Church has just as high a divorce rate as the world, Christians change churches like they change their minds, change jobs when it gets a little tough. What my generation once called hard work, today they call abuse. Jesus said; “If any man be my disciple, let him first deny himself, pick up his cross and follow me.” The modern day Christian will follow God as long as it doesn’t cost him anything, hurt to bad, or puts him out in anyway. The problem is not the government, not the white man, not the black man, it’s the Church! When the Church of the Living God becomes politically correct instead of biblically correct we will have such a moral decay that what once was the abnormal now becomes the normal. History will show this has been the down fall of every empire that once led the world, so I must ask the same question as David: “IS THERE NOT A CAUSE?” “Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.” To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

NCOM CONVENTION HITS JACKPOT IN RENO Freedom is an ongoing gamble, with bikers’ rights activists wagering to win against an often stacked deck, always in favor of the House, but everyone came away a winner at this year’s 28th annual NCOM Convention over Mother’s Day weekend, May 9-12, 2013 at the posh Silver Legacy Resort-Casino in Reno, Nevada. But it was work, not play, on the agenda for hundreds of attendees from across the country there to discuss topics of concern to all riders; such as biker profiling and discrimination, motorcycle-only roadblocks, knowing your rights, and mobilizing motorcyclists to advocate motorcycle-friendly legislation and defeat anti-biking bills. The traditional “Ringing of the Bell” ceremony paid homage to those freedom fighters who have gone before us, while for the first time a Veterans’ Rights seminar was conducted by NCOM’s newly-formed Veteran Affairs Special Committee in an effort to reach out to true defenders of Freedom. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) is solely sponsored by the Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) nationwide legal services program and serves as an umbrella organization for more than 2,000 NCOM Member clubs, organizations and associations worldwide, representing well over a quarter of a million politically active motorcyclists. NCOM has successfully outreached to numerous segments of the motorcycling community in an effort to unite for our rights, both legal and legislatively, and has become a unifying voice amongst North America’s motorcycle rights organizations (MROs), motorcycle clubs, women riders, religious riding organizations, touring groups, trikers, sportbikers, and minority motorcyclists. This year’s NCOM Convention was hosted by the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs, and all motorcyclists were welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focused on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road. During the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, several honorees were recognized for their contributions to “Improving The Image of Motorcycling”, including; GOVERNMENT: Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker; MEDIA: Becky Cakes – Classic Parts Hotline; COMMERCE: Chris McIntyre – Eagle Rider Motorcycle Rentals; LEGAL: Boyd Spencer – AIM Attorney for Pennsylvania & New Jersey; ENTERTAINMENT: Max “Pitstop” Martini – Actor/ Boozefighters MC; SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Christine Paige – Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, and Suzanne “Baglady Sue” Austin – Comedian; and NCOM’s highest honor, the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Frank Ernst of ABATE of Minnesota and a member of the NCOM Board of Directors. Next year’s 29th Annual NCOM Convention will be held May 8-11, 2014 at The Intercontinental Hotel in Dallas, Texas. For further information, contact NCOM at (800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-ABIKE.com. “STOP MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINT FUNDING ACT” INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced “a bill to prohibit the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from providing funds to state and local authorities for the purpose of creating motorcycle only checkpoints.” Filed on May 7, the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act, H.R. 1861, “also contains language to force the DOT to focus motorcycle safety efforts on crash prevention programs, not national helmet mandates,” according to Rep. Sensenbrenner. “This will stop the DOT from manipulating State policies with federal money.” 14

NTSB RECOMMENDS LOWERING DRUNK-DRIVING LIMIT TO .05 The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a recommendation that states lower their drunk-driving thresholds from a 0.08 blood-alcohol content to 0.05 BAC. The recommendation is one of several the NTSB made to curtail drunk driving, which the federal investigative agency claims is involved in a third of America’s 34,000 traffic deaths each year. The agency acknowledged in its report there is no one “silver bullet,” but estimated that 500 to 800 lives per year could be saved with the proposed lower limit. But chairman Deborah Hersman said the NTSB is aiming even higher; “Reaching zero deaths from alcohol-impaired driving.” Not everyone agrees. “This recommendation is ludicrous,” said Sarah Longwell, managing director of the American Beverage Institute. “Moving from 0.08 to 0.05 would criminalize perfectly responsible behavior. Currently, all 50 states have set a BAC level of .08, though most countries in Europe including Russia, most of South America and Australia, have set BAC levels at .05 to constitute drunken driving. The NTSB only makes recommendations on transportation safety issues, and has little actual regulatory power. It will be up to federal agencies, Congress and state lawmakers to take action. The last move from .10 to .08 BAC levels took 21 years for each state to implement. WEATHER & ECONOMY DRIVE UP TRAFFIC FATALITIES For the first time in nearly a decade, the number of traffic deaths went up last year according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which cited warmer weather and an improving economy for the 5.3% increase in fatalities to 34,080, the highest since 2008. The rise follows a steady decline in fatal accidents since 2005 when 43,510 people died, culminating in a 60-year-low of 32,367 in 2011, but NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said, “With a rebounding economy there’s increased discretionary driving, which is clearly always the leader in terms of dangerous driving scenarios.” U.S. motorcyclist deaths outpaced the overall national numbers with a projected 9% more fatalities in 2012, up to more than 5,000, and in addition to climatic and economic factors the agency also blames a long-term decline in helmet laws with only 19 states requiring usage, down from 26 states in 1997. “The most notable thing was the warm weather,” said Dr. James Hedlund, a former NHTSA official and the author of the report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, as thirty-four states east of the Rocky Mountains notched record average temperatures from March to May 2012, and forty-eight states recorded their warmest average temperatures on record. The report also cited two economic factors that may have contributed to an increase in the number of miles traveled via motorcycle in 2012 and thus a higher probability of accidents: a better economy and high gas prices. “An improving economy produces more discretionary income with which to buy and ride motorcycles,” said the study. Several states reported an increase in the number of registrations in 2012, and Hedlund has found that over the past three decades, the number of registrations tracks closely with the number of deaths. GHSA’s recommendations for cutting motorcyclist deaths include reducing alcohol impairment, reducing speeding, increasing driver awareness, and ensuring that motorcyclists are licensed. According to GHSA, NHTSA data shows that in 2010, nearly a quarter of riders involved in fatal accidents did not have valid licenses.

Visit us on the web at www.ONABIKE.com AIM-2622-F-Ad for Tennessee.indd 1 CONNECTICUT RIDERS DECRY PROPOSAL TO REGULATE EXHAUST SYSTEMS An unexpected effort in the General Assembly to crack down on noisy motorcycles is being met by opposition from the motorcycle industry. Under language added last week to a bill involving off-road ATVs, the sale, registration or operation of a street motorcycle having non-stock pipes would become a fineable offense. Most after-market exhaust systems are not EPA-certified.

The new provisions, if approved, would require federal Environmental Protection Agency noise emission control labels to be displayed on all motorcycles, and would institute fines of up to $250 per offense for noncompliance. OHIO LAWMAKERS CALL FOR BAN ON TRAFFIC CAMERAS Following a biting ruling by a judge who called traffic cameras a scam, legislation was introduced on February 20th in Columbus, Ohio by Representative Ron Maag (R-Lebanon) to eliminate the use of photo monitoring devices to detect speed and traffic signal violations. He and Rep. Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati), one of many bipartisan co-sponsors, believe the removal of “speed-trap” cameras is necessary and must be addressed immediately since there is no existing state law regulating traffic enforcement cameras, so communities operate their programs under local ordinances. Their hard-line stance against the cameras comes on the heels of Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Ruehlman’s permanent injunction, which prohibits the further use of speed cameras in Elmwood Place, a Cincinnati suburb. Ruehlman granted the injunction citing there was a lack of due process for alleged violators. Judge Ruehlman’s decision was unequivocal. He made national news headlines when he called the speed camera system in Elmwood Place “a high-tech game of Three-card Monty.... It is a scam the motorist cannot win.” Between the camera enforcement, the lack of proper signage, and the fees for administrative hearings, Ruehlman declared that the town of Elmwood Place had violated drivers’ due-process rights, and may be the first case in the U.S. that specifically addresses the constitutionality of traffic cams. In Ohio, there are at least 16 municipalities that use some kind of red light or speed camera, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In the United States, there are more than 650 municipalities operating either red-light or speed cameras. Nine states have passed laws prohibiting the use of red-light cameras, and 12 outlaw speed cameras, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, while 29 states have no law on the books. 11/1/11 5:06 PM Ohio legislators hope to make the Buckeye State the Lucky 13th state, and House Bill 69 has been assigned to the House’s Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee for further discussion and vote.

POKER RUN LEGALIZATION BILL IN ILLINOIS Companion bills SB 1960 and HB 2520; the “Poker Run Act,” have been introduced in Illinois to legalize poker runs for the charities that bikers do and for Not For Profit organizations. “No segment in our society raises more money for charities and local citizens that are down and out on their luck than bikers,” said Bob Myers, State Legislative Coordinator for ABATE of Illinois, who went on to explain; “Since ‘Land Based Gaming’ has become law, the Illinois liquor and Gaming agents have been tearing down our fliers in restaurants and bars claiming they are illegal as they use poker cards, spinners, dice, and marble spinners to complete the run.” ABATE intends to use the legislation to correct problems with “poker” runs and other events that the Gaming commission and Liquor Control Board are treating as gambling. Poker runs shall include “dice runs”, “marble runs” or other events where the object is to build or obtain some matter of a score with which the participants use in a competition. Poker runs shall not constitute a game of chance under the Illinois Gaming Act or Liquor controls Act and shall not be regulated under those Acts. THREE-WHEELERS MAY BE EXEMPTED FROM LOUISIANA HELMET LAW Louisiana was the most recent state to (re)impose a mandatory helmet law for all motorcyclists back in 2004, but the House Transportation committee recently advanced legislation that would exempt a new concept vehicle from the legal category that requires drivers to wear helmets. HB 218’s exemption would apply to the three-wheeled Elio Motors vehicle, which is preparing for production at the Shreveport plant that once made pickups for General Motors. Because the Elio has three wheels, it’s considered a motorcycle under federal and state safety regulations. “It definitely affects our sales because a lot of people don’t want to order the car if it requires wearing helmets,” said Joel Sheltrown, vice president for governmental affairs at Elio Motors, adding that “We’re not bound by automotive standards, but that is our goal.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “It’s a world with 20,000 television channels... get as far away from it as you can.” ~ Honda ad

by Bob “Bulldog” Ousley Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee: My Father and step mother have been living on a small farm since the early 1970’s. Those of you who have been around a place with some acreage know how much work that can be. My father is a WWII veteran in his late 80’s and both he and my step mother have their health issues. I learned recently they have decided to leave the farm and go to a retirement home. It’s a move that’s overdue but a very tough thing to go through after all those years of independent living in one place. Dad has always downplayed his role in World War Two. He turned 18 about the time the tide of the war turned and arrived in the Philippines shortly before the Japanese surrendered. I guess since he wasn’t on the front line for the big battles in the Pacific he felt like he hadn’t really earned his veteran status. All these years he has never checked in with the veterans administration to see what might be available to him. He’s always been of the mindset that you take care of yourself and pay your own way. Now he’s not in a position to do that. My brother was selected to manage this transition, and being a veteran himself, looked into what was available to help. He discovered there is a monthly amount for veterans in certain situations that can help with the costs of a retirement home. This assistance from the Veterans Administration is going to make everything work out and my father and step mother will be able to live the rest of their days without fear of ending up on the street or running out of resources. I’m telling you this story in case you have a veteran in your family that is facing similar challenges. Those who go to war and defend our freedom, no matter what role they played, have benefits through the Veterans Administration. They earned 18

those benefits and many did not survive to collect them. If you are related to a stubborn old mule like my dad, tie him up, put him in a wheel barrow and push him through the front door of the VA. Help him get with a counselor who can explain the benefits and see if there isn’t something that can make a tough life transition a little less stressful. America has done much to insure honor and respect for our veterans in their twilight. However, veterans have to be curious enough to find out what’s available. Thank you America for remembering those who have risked it all to keep us free! Some are still risking it all and some are in danger of losing it all. June 22, 2013 is Bring Bowe Home Day in Hailey, Idaho. They are expecting a lot of veterans and bikers to come make some noise to insure the government does not leave Bowe Bergdahl behind in captivity when our troops are pulled out of Afghanistan later this year. Bowe was captured June 30, 2009 and we know he is still alive in captivity. We need to bring Bowe home. If you can make it to Hailey it’s a great opportunity to ride through the Dakotas and Wyoming before the big Sturgis rush. Sorry but you’ll miss no panties Wednesday in Hulett, Wyoming cause feeling a cool breeze is reserved for the week of Sturgis. The offset is beautiful country, mountains and rivers with grand scenic vistas punctuated by a hail stone or two the size of softballs but that’s what great biking memories are made of. When was the last time you looked at the night sky and saw stars all the way down to the horizon? That happens a lot out west but if you can’t make it there, it’s time to ride and Tennessee has some great riding. Life is at its best with your hands on handlebars. See you on the road. Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t. — Bulldog

United She StandS Designwraps Brand CEO Embarks On 36-Month U.S. Tour To Promote American-Made Products

by

Wendy Pitlick ~ Black Hills Pioneer

USA - Freedom is that feeling you get when you are out in the wind.” That’s Joan Krenning’s personal definition of freedom, and it strongly relates to the message the small business owner is taking on the road as she embarks on a 36-month motorcycle tour of the United States. Riding a 2013 Harley Davidson Street Glide that has been dubbed “Freedom Glide,” and is wrapped with Constitution graphics designed by Red Phoenix Marketing, including the words of the Bill of Rights, Krenning’s ride mission is to pro-

mote American-made products, and to remind people of what the phrase “United We Stand” really means. Krenning, the founder and CEO of American-made DesignWraps Brands, the premier manufacturer of Made in the USA headwear, knows what she’s talking about. She is eager to relay her message and hear the stories of others, as she stops at every licensed Harley-Davidson dealership in the lower 48 states. Freedom in America is definitely something Krenning does not take for granted. For most of the 1980s she was the proud owner of Loveland, Colorado’s popular biker bar, The Buckhorn Tavern. Krenning lost the bar when she was arrested for drug possession in 1988. After serving some time in prison, Krenning emerged stronger, drug-free, and full of ambition. Deeming herself as “unemployable,” and battling a negative self image of herself because of past mistakes, Krenning turned to what she loved — sewing, and creating head gear for bikers. It wasn’t long before Krenning started her business that allowed her to enjoy life on the road, meeting people, and thanking God for her freedom to do so. “One of my fears is what we are doing to ourselves in America,” Krenning said. “Everybody likes to use the phrase, ‘United We Stand, Divided We Fall,’ but I really don’t think that one out of 1,000 Americans ever think about what that really means. ‘United We Stand’ means that as Americans we have to agree to disagree on issues, because that is the way it has always been. We have always supported our country. Regardless of how we believe, we still need to support each other financially by supporting American jobs, pray for each other, and respect each others’ personal beliefs for what they are.”

Her mission is simple: to promote the purchase of American Made products, to promote the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and to inspire hope in Americans. “Patriotism is a devotion to one’s country. I believe we are all Americans first. Before we are Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans. The definition of indivisible: Not divisible; unable to be divided or separated.” As a “Made in the USA” manufacturer of quality head wraps for the last 23 years, Krenning said she has been frustrated over the last 10 years by the lack of American-made raw materials available to small manufacturers. “When I first started, I could find U.S. made fabrics, and little by little, all of the fabric companies that I had been dealing with went out of business and all of my alternatives came from China,” Krenning said. “I was bummed about that. I was still manufacturing products in the USA by employing Americans to cut and sew. Every hang tag or package was Made in the USA, but now I had to purchase fabrics that were not manufactured in this country.” Krenning launched her ride across America, called the “Glory US-A Freedom Ride,” on Feb. 2, 2013, and she said it has been a dream-come-true for this biker who has been riding since 1986. She loves the freedom of the open road, and she loves stopping and hearing the many stories from the people she meets, not just at the Harley dealerships, but in the truck stops, the banks, the Starbucks and every other place she stops.” “I meet the most interesting people,” she said. “Then all of a sudden I am spending three hours at one place.” That’s a problem Krenning said she needs to work out, since in order to make it to every licensed Harley Davidson dealer in 48 states over 36 months, she needs to stay on a tight time schedule. At the end of her trip, Krenning will have visited more than 700 dealerships and traveled more than 200,000 miles. The best part of her trip, Krenning said, is the people. “I didn’t plan on the conversation I had with the Korean Prisoner of War, or the woman I spent time with in the truck stop who needed prayer. I could name a thousand people I have met,” she said. Not all of the stories people have shared with her have been happy ones, though. Krenning said when she crossed the Gulf, she heard many stories of lives that were ravaged by hurricanes. “We got upset around the country when the hurricane hit and our gas prices went up,” she said. “Did we once ever think about what they were going through? They didn’t just have gas prices that went up. They lost whole industries. They lost their homes. They had kids that had to change schools and no roofs on their house for a year. I listened to all of these stories and was like ‘oh my gosh, how did you make it?’ At the same time, the people who seemed the happiest were the people who had the least.” In addition to creating awareness about American-made products and what freedom means, Krenning is also riding to raise money for Laura Klock’s “Helping With Horsepower” program, and the “Wounded Warrior Project.” She also plans to raise money and awareness for her newly formed Wraps of Hope Foundation. In fact, Krenning said a small portion of all the proceeds from the sales of her DesignWraps Brand products would go toward the Wraps of Hope Foundation. In addition to her custom wrap, which Krenning personally designed, “The Freedom Glide” motorcycle is also decked out with custom aftermarket parts that are 100% Made in America, provided by her sponsors: Klock Werks, RideWright Wheels, J&P Cycles, Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, Yaffe’s Bagger Nation, MGS Custom Bikes, Danny Gray Seats, Roaring Toyz, Wire Plus and Saddleman. American-made apparel sponsors are Churchill Gloves, Latus Motors HarleyDavidson, Inferno Googles and her newest sponsor, Fox Creek Leathers. Interested persons may follow her rides and experiences, as well as view her complete schedule at her blog at www.ladyroaddog.com, or www.designwraps.com. June 2013

Three Little Pigs went out to dinner one night. The waiter came and took their drink order. ‘I would like a Sprite,’ said the first little piggy. ‘I would like a Coke,’ said the second little piggy. ‘I want beer, lots and lots of beer,’ said the third little piggy. The drinks were brought out and the waiter took their orders for dinner. ‘I want a nice big steak,’ said the first piggy. ‘I would like the salad plate,’ said the second piggy. ‘I want beer, lots and lots of beer,’ said the third little piggy. The meals were brought out and a while later the waiter approached the table and asked if the piggies would like any dessert. ‘I want a banana split,’ said the first piggy. ‘I want a cheesecake,’ said the second piggy. ‘I want beer, lots and lots of beer,’ exclaimed the third little piggy. ‘Pardon me for asking,’ said the waiter to the third little piggy,’ But why have you only ordered beer all evening?’ The third piggy says ‘Well, duh…..somebody has to go ‘Wee, wee, wee, all the way home! When John and Mary first got married John said, “I am a sex addict and I’m putting a box under the bed to help control my addiction. You must promise never to look in it.” In all their 30 years of marriage Mary never looked. However, on the afternoon of their 30th anniversary, curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $81,874.25 in cash. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. That evening after dinner Mary could no longer contain herself and confessed, “For all these years I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. But now I need to know why do you keep the 3 beer cans in the box?” John thought for a while and said, “I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again.”Mary was shocked but forgiving. John thanked her for being so understanding. They hugged and made their peace. A little while later Mary asked John, so why do you have all that money in the box? John answered; “Well, whenever the box filled up with empty cans, I took them to the recycling center and redeemed them for cash” 34

Years ago, a young Navy Pilot was injured while ejecting from his A-4 Skyhawk due to engine failure during a catapult shot from the aircraft carrier, but due to the heroics of rescue helicopter and the ship’s hospital staff, the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear. Since he wasn’t physically impaired, he remained on flight status and eventually became an Admiral. However, during his career, he was always sensitive about his appearance. One day, the Admiral was interviewing two Navy Master Chiefs and a Marine Sergeant Major for his personal staff. The first Master Chief was a Surface Navy-type, and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview, the Admiral asked him, “Do you notice anything different about me?” The Master Chief answered, “Why, yes, Admiral. I couldn’t help but notice that you’re missing your starboard ear, and I don’t know whether this impacts your hearing on that side.” The Admiral got very angry at this lack of tact, and threw him out of his office. The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked this same question, answered, “Well, yes, Sir. You seem to be short one ear.” The Admiral threw him out, as well. The third interview was with the Marine Sergeant Major. He was articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the two Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy, but went ahead with the same question. “Do you notice anything different about me?” To his surprise, the Sergeant Major said, “Yes, Sir. You wear contact lenses.” The Admiral was impressed, and thought to himself, what an incredibly tactful Marine’. “And how would you know that?”, the Admiral asked. The Sergeant Major replied: “Well, Sir, it’s pretty hard to wear glasses with only one f***in’ ear!” Our son Joey has a new work out routine...... Burial of an Old Skool Biker

O

By: Rebel Ron

n March 24 bikers from all around descended on Lawrenceburg, Tenn. To pay their respects to a life long Harley rider, family man, musician, and biker, 56 year old Thomas Mark Brewer AKA “Tom Dooley.” I first met Dooley back in the early 1980s at a Nashville helmet ban party that had more emphasis on party than it did on repeal of the freedom sucking helmet law. We rode a lot since then. He recently acquired the nick name “Grinder head.” (Got his long hair caught in a wire wheel brush on a grinder. Twice!!!) Tom was born in California after his Lawrenceburg born & raised dad, Big Al Brewer, rode a 1940 Knucklehead to the West coast in 1948 to strike it rich. As usual life gets in the way of one’s plans & Big Al wound up in Salinas, Ca. working for a Harley dealership & getting married. (Mr. B says it took him 26 years before he could afford to come back home.) The Brewer family returned to the Volunteer State in 1973 & they continued to be a family of riders as you can see by this unique photo from 2009 of four Brewer generations sitting astride their two wheelers. You can see the patriarch of the family, Big Al, on the left, Dooley on his Shovelhead affectionately know as “The Bitch”, Tom’s son Brian, along with Brian’s two boys, Austin & Cain on their scoots. Most of us are lucky to simply have a photo of four generations much less four generations who ride. Very cool. Tom was an accomplished musician as well. Particularly the Blues & had played with all sorts of artist over the years up to & including B

B King. Grinder head was always good for some laughs whether you were laughing with him about anything or at him for something. :) Dooley began his riding career on a chopped out bicycle as many of us did back in the day. Then he got a Tohatsu scooter eventually getting his first Harley years later, a 1960 Sportster. He has ridden all sorts of Harley’s since from Panheads to Shovelheads. He was his own mechanic & enjoyed the challenge of riding the older model Harleys. Tom was affiliated with many MC clubs over the years but had a special connection with the Outlaws MC of which there were several at his funeral along with many other patches from far & wide. At the service they had Dooley laid out in his leathers, with his ever present KD sunglasses on looking as if he was ready to ride off into the sunset. In a way I guess he was since the family carried Tom to his final resting place in a Harley Hearse so he could ride with his biker brothers one more time. His son Brian was following the hears riding “The Bitch” followed by about 200 bikes. At the gravesite Ron Qualls of the EBGB MC put a fitting finishing touch on Dooley’s funeral when he played the old traditional song that got Tom his name, “Tom Dooley“. The chorus of this old song based on a Confederate soldier who took the blame for a murder in 1866 seemed rather appropriate at Tom’s funeral. It goes like this, “Hang down your head Tom Dooley. Hang down your head & cry. Hang down your head Tom Dooley. Po’ boy you gonna die.” Dooley you will be missed by many bikers, & your family, from California to Tennessee. RIP man, see ya on the other side.

*Disclaimer - We at Thunder Roads never do obituary type articles but made this one exception because Rebel has done so much for this magazine and this meant a great deal to him to run his friend’s story.
