By Rick Dandes Lewis Grizzard, the famous Atlanta author once wrote, ‘Spring time is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.’ That about sums it up for us. Springtime brings relief from winter. It’s all about renewal, warmth and new beginnings. So sit back and enjoy, as Tidbits welcomes in the new season this week. The start of spring is seen by the vernal equinox, which occurs on March 20 or 21 each year the Northern Hemisphere. Oddly enough, this date is also the autumnal equinox—the first day of autumn—in the Southern Hemisphere. Turnabout is fair play: the autumnal equinox in the north (which occurs in late September), is the also first day of spring south of the equator. No kidding: Spring fever is not a figment of your imagination. It is a real physical condition that occurs when a sudden warm spell follows a long cold period. As the temperature rises, the body has to get rid of heat; there’s a dilation or expansion of the blood vessels so that blood can be carried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. Some people experience an energetic feeling. Hence, spring fever. Here comes the sun: Suppose you were standing on the equator during either the vernal or autumnal equinox. Now look up. You would see the sun pass directly overhead. There are only two times in the year when this happens.

Full tilt: Why is there more daylight in spring and summer? Easy. In spring, the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun, increasing the number of daylight hours and bringing warmer weather that causes plants to bring forth new growth. Celtic tradition, which is based solely on daylight and the strength of the noon sun, says that spring begins in early February and continues until early May. Spring forward. In recent decades seasonal creep has been observed, which means that many signs of the season are happening earlier than expected in many regions. We’re talking a couple of days per decade. Akitu was a spring festival in ancient Mesopotamia. The name is from the Sumerian language for ‘barley’, originally marking two festivals celebrating the beginning of each of the two half-years of the Sumerian Calendar, marking the sowing of barley in autumn and the cutting of barley in spring. The Lunar New Year is sometimes called the Chinese Spring Festival. It is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays, particularly by people on mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally beings on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th. Hurricane season also begins in late spring, on May 15th in the northeastern Pacific and June 1st in the northern Atlantic. You don’t see hurricanes before these dates although they do sometimes occur. One of the earliest was Tropical Storm Ana in mid-April 2003. Severe weather generally occurs during the spring, when warmer air invades the lower latitudes just as cold air pushes out from the polar regions. Spring is also when flooding is also most common in and near mountainous areas during this time of year due to the melting of snow, aided by warm rains. In America, ÒTornado AlleyÓ is most active by far during the spring. The Rocky Mountains prevent the surging hot and cold air fronts from moving westward and instead force them directly at each other. Some of the worst blizzards have occurred in the spring. Does anyone remember the Great Blizzard of 1993, which brought hurricane conditions and then light snow to northern Florida on March 13th, and deposited up to five feet of snow in parts of the Appalachian Mountains. The festival of Basant, in Pakistan, is held in the ancient eastern city of Lahore. Basant is marked by kite-flying, rooftop gatherings, garden parties and horse riding events. May Day is not an American holiday, but it’s celebrated all over the world. During ancient Roman times, spring was celebrated with the Feast of Floralia. This marked the flowering of the grains and the bounty of the animals as spring continued. The egg became an important symbol during this time period, thanks to the symbolism of egg bringing forth life and nourishing people. As the Italian Feast of Floralia evolved, people began creating eggs out of many materials, including chocolate, as gifts for their loved ones. Young matrons carried these eggs with them in baskets throughout the spring, trying to determine the possible gender of a future child. In Germany, Walpurgisnacht, on April 30th and May 1st celebrates the release of winter’s hold on the land and the oncoming joy of summer. More spring legends: On May 1st, it is believed that the earth spirits like sprites and fairies, emerge to bring the land safely to summer. People celebrate with great feasts of food and drink as the look forward to the coming of summer. In Thailand, a three-day water festival on April 13-15 marks Songkran, the Buddhists’ celebration of the new year. Parades feature statues of Buddha that spray water on passersby. In small
Here’s what you’ll need: —Hard-boiled eggs or blown eggs (see below for how to blow eggs) —Nontoxic, safe food items such as blueberries or red cabbage leaves for blue, walnut shells, tea or coffee for tan, red beets for gray. Experiment with what you have on hand. —Medium-size saucepans (one per color) —Water —Vinegar —Slotted spoon —Strainer —Mixing bowls —Cooking oil and soft cloth Pour 1 cup water into a saucepan and add a handful of an item such as berries, or cut-up fruits and vegetables. Bring to a boil and simmer about 15-30 minutes until the water turns the color you wish. (The eggs will dye in a lighter color than the color in the pan). Strain the colored water into a small mixing bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of white vinegar to each cup of liquid. Add eggs to the natural dyes. Turn them around occasionally. Note that colors will be subtler than commercial dyes. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and let them air dry. When dry, polish with a small amount of cooking oil applied to a soft cloth. Refrigerate boiled eggs.

Drying Tip: For a convenient drying rack for blown eggs, set several wooden skewers in a chunk of floral foam. Insert skewer through the hole at the bottom of the dyed egg. Extra idea: Onion skin dyeing method with plant designs. Place 2 or 3 handfuls of loose yellow onion skins in a saucepan. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Simmer 15-30 minutes. Add 2 teaspoons white vinegar. Strain and cool. Meanwhile, arrange one or two nontoxic flat leaves, ferns, fresh dill or parsley on blown or boiled eggs. Carefully cover the egg with a piece of doubled cheesecloth. Gather the cloth snuggly, and tie with white string. Wrap several eggs. Set them in onion dye until desired reddishbrown shade appears. Remove from dye. Let dry before removing cheesecloth and plants. Here’s how to blow out the contents of eggs: Poke a small hole with a straight pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle a toothpick or wooden skewer into one of the holes to break the yolk. Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry. Store in an empty egg carton. villages, young people throw water at each other for fun. People also release fish into rivers as an act of kindness. The Jewish holiday of Passover is held during spring. Passover begins with two nights of a special dinner called Seders. During these two dinners, families read from a book called the Haggadah about the ancient Israelites exodus from Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. As they honor their ancestors, Jews reaffirm the importance of freedom. On Easter, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. People attend church and also enjoy different Easter customs. In Germany, people make’egg trees’ that are decorated like Christmas trees. In Hungary, boys sprinkle girls with perfumed water — and in return, girls prepare a holiday dinner for them. It’s commonly called ‘Spring Break,’ that time of year when students have a week-long break from the tedium of school and travel south or to parts unknown to party; Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Cancun, Mexico are two favorite hot spots. Other countries celebrate it too, including China, Korea, Japan, Germany and Mexico.

Viral Infection Can Cause Dizziness DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I got a sudden attack of dizziness that landed me in bed. I couldn’t stand. Finally, with the help of my husband, I got to the doctor, who said I had a viral infection called vestibular neuritis. I am taking medicine and am somewhat better, but the dizziness isn’t completely gone. Will it go? When? -- L.T.
• “The first time we painted the walls in our house, one of us had stepped in some paint while wearing socks and, not realizing it, had tracked some paint on the carpet. Since then, we always go barefoot when painting, since we can feel it if we step in paint and can clean it off before it gets tracked around the house.” -- M.M. in Florida • “If you have leftover bits of fabric that is pretty or still useful, save it in a box or bag for other projects. You can use fun fabric scraps to patch kids’ clothes or for doll clothing. They also can be used to make sachets or for gift decoration. Quilters might appreciate these scraps for their projects.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts • “When threading a needle, spray the end of the thread with hairspray to make it stiffer and to hold the fibers together.” -O.A. in New Mexico • It’s important to clean your exterior windows and screens at least yearly, and many people do this in the spring. Here’s a good way to make putting those clean screens back up a little easier. As you remove them, number each one on the inside with a permanent marker. Number each window casing with the same number as well. Do this in a discreet place. When the screens are ready, you’ll know instantly which window to return them to. • Unlined leather gloves can be easily washed. Just put them on and wash your gloved hands with a little warm water and mild detergent. Rinse and blot, then smooth into shape to dry. Lay on a flat towel to dry, flipping several times during the drying process. • Here’s a good tip: Always keep an extra vacuum-cleaner belt on hand. When it breaks, you might need it to continue using the vacuum cleaner right away. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. ANSWER: I have to warn readers that the causes of dizziness are diverse, and vestibular neuritis, while common, is only one of many causes. The vestibule of the inner ear has three fluid-filled canals that work like a carpenter’s balance, that gadget whose center contains a fluid-containing tube with a bubble in it. The balance tells the carpenter if a piece of wood is aligned. The inner ear canals tell people if they are aligned. They send signals to the brain that keep us balanced. A viral infection of those canals or of the nerve that sends signals to the brain makes people feel like they’ve been put in the spin cycle of a washer. Not only are affected people dizzy, they become nauseated and often throw up. Symptoms of vestibular neuritis lessen in two to three days, but full recovery can take up to six or more weeks. A cortisone drug taken within the first three days of illness can ease symptoms. And medicines like promethazine relieve dizziness and nausea, but they make some people so drowsy that they prefer the dizziness. The booklet on dizziness discusses vestibular neuritis as well as the other dizziness causes. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you give an explanation of and recommendation for cure of a health problem I have? Being over the age of 65 and in reasonably good health, I suffer every winter from painful cracks in my fingertips and the soles of my feet. -- R.V. ANSWER: The cracking indicates your skin is drying out. You can restore moisture to your fingertips with a light coat -- just a dab will do you -- of petroleum jelly (Vaseline or another moisturizer) before going to bed. Put Band-Aids over your fingertips, and leave them on all night. You can do the same during the day, but it’s a bit inconvenient. In about three days, the
cracks should be filling in. Continue this treatment every third or fourth night. The same thing works for the feet. You don’t use Band-Aids, but you do cover your feet with socks before going to sleep. Don’t apply petroleum jelly during the daytime. It might make you somewhat unsteady. It takes longer for feet to heal. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does the consumption of foods packaged or wrapped in aluminum foil pose a risk for contracting or accelerating Alzheimer’s disease? -- M.E. ANSWER: The answer is no. The brains of some Alzheimer’s patients have more than the usual amount of aluminum. Some have interpreted that as indicating aluminum as a cause. Few scientists hold to that theory. ***
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

As we near the end of another spring training baseball season, here are some Tidbits about last year’s attendance. The 2009 Cactus League season was the best in its history. The overall attendance reached 1.57 million baseball fans, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2008. The economic impact of baseball on Arizona during spring training has been estimated at about $359 million. Professional baseball started in Arizona in the early 1900s as a training ground for minor league teams prior to the start of their regular season. It wasn’t until the year 1946 that the major leagues came to Arizona. To that point, spring training was always in Florida, the Grapefruit Circuit. The Cleveland Indians were first to move to Arizona, but not before Indian’s owner Bill Veeck convinced New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham to do the same. The Indians came to Tucson. The Giants to Phoenix. The New York Yankees have always trained in Florida. Except for one year, 1951, when they trained in Arizona, using the New York Giant’s facilities in Phoenix. What a treat it was for Arizona fans, who got to see Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle play together for the first and last time. It was Mantle’s first year with the Yankees, and DiMaggio’s last. Major league spring training baseball is a Florida tradition since the beginning of the 1900s. During that time, fans have enjoyed seeing the legends of the game, from Babe Ruth to Rogers Hornsby, Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente. SPRING TRAINING (continued): In Central Florida major league spring training games began in October 1908, when there was a single exhibition game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Petersburg Saints. But games began for real in February 1913, when the Chicago Cubs arrived in Tampa for the area’s initial spring training. In 1913, only two teams trained in Florida, the Chicago Cubs, in Tampa, and the Cleveland Indians, in Pensacola. It was soon after, however, that teams began moving into the Sunshine State and by 1914 the Cubs and Indians were joined by the St. Louis Browns in St. Petersburg, the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Augustine and the Philadelphia Athletics in Jacksonville. There was no spring training in Florida during World War II. It was due to travel restrictions made by the government. It was called the ÒPotomac Line.Ó In 1946, Commissioner Kennesaw Landis erased the ÒLine,Ó and permitted teams to resume the practice of traveling south to prepare for the season in a warm climate. During the War Years, in order to free up space on railroad lines carrying troops and supplies for World War II, teams had been prohibited from training south of the Potomac and Ohio

• It was British journalist Jeremy Campbell who made the following sage observation: “Computers are good at swift, accurate computation and at storing great masses of information. The brain, on the other hand, is not as efficient a number cruncher and its memory is often highly fallible; a basic inexactness is built into its design. The brain’s strong point is its flexibility.” • In 1911, it became illegal in China to wear a pigtail. • One of Ernest Hemingway’s early English teachers claimed that the future Nobel Prize winner would “never learn to write.” • More from the files of hangover cures from around the world: In Japan, pickled plums are reputed to ease the morning-after ails; in Italy, it’s (quite sensibly) coffee. The Chinese drink strong green tea, while in the Netherlands it’s the hair of the dog -- the Dutch advocate beer as a remedy. Danes eat salt, while Mexicans eat shrimp (I’ll take the Mexican remedy any day). Perhaps the oddest remedy is practiced in Russia: Sufferers there head to the sauna, where they proceed to whip out the toxins with leafy birch branches. No word on what they do in winter, when the birches are, presumably, leafless. • The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways -- better known as the Interstate Highway System -- is the largest public works project in the history of the world. At 46,876 miles, it’s also the world’s largest highway system. • Stephen Foster, known as the Father of American Music, originally got paid a grand total of 2 cents for each of his musical scores that was sold. TIDBITS AND MUSIC: THE MOTOWN SOUND
It all began in Detroit, when Berry Gordy started a pop record label featuring some of the most talented African-American performers every gathered together under one roof. Little Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, featuring Michael Jackson. They all started with Motown. Truly, a legendary group of performers. Motown Records was founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. on January 12, 1959. It was first known as Tamla Records, but later incorporated as Motown on April 14, 1960. The name Motown was perfect. It came from the two words motor and town, which was the nickname for Detroit. The first female artist signed by Motown Records was Mable John. John was a blues vocalist and produced several minor hits for the new label. Jimmy Ruffin hit the heights with ‘What Becomes of the Brokenhearted’ in 1966. Jimmy’s brother, David Ruffin, was a member of the Temptations. The Jackson 5 made their reputation on Motown, but in 1975 they took the money and ran to Epic Records. There was some loyalty to Motown. Jermaine Jackson left the group and stayed with Motown as a solo artist. He was replaced by his brother Randy and the group on Epic became The Jacksons. ‘Please Mr. Postman’ by the Marvelettes was the first hit from Motown to reach number one on the Billboards top 100 chart in December 1961. Diana Ross, who had come from The Supremes, another mega-hit maker for Motown, was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as being ‘The Most Successful Female Artist of All Time,’ with more than 70 hit singles. In 1961 ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder was signed to Motown Records. Wonder has kept those ties. He has been with the label ever since and recently signed a life-long deal. Another popular Motown group was The Commodores, also known as ‘The Black Beatles,’ at the time. Originally known as the Mystics, they became the Commodores in 1969. In 1968, Lionel Richie became the lead singer and saxophonist with the Commodores. They signed to Atlantic Records in 1968 for a one-record contract, before moving to Motown Records, being schooled as support act to the Jackson Five. The Commodores became established as America’s most popular soul group of the 1970s, and Richie was responsible for writing many of their tunes, and singing many of their biggest hits, specializing in romantic, easy-listening ballads such as ‘Easy’, ‘Three Times A Lady’ and ‘Still’. Remember the Four Tops? They were huge in the 1960s, before the Beatles changed pop music forever. Their early hits included covers of the Left Banke‘s ‘Walk Away Renee’ and Tim Hardin‘s ‘If I Were A Carpenter.’ Gladys Knight and the Pips were signed to Motown Records’ in 1966, where they were teamed up with producer/ songwriter Norman Whitfield. Mary Wells was the First Lady of Motown, with a string of extraordinary hit singles, mostly written by the great songwriter, Smokey Robinson. Some of her hits included ‘Two Lovers’ and ‘You Beat Me to the Punch.’ Tragically, she died at age 49.

DEAR FRUSTRATED: Take her out of the cage! I have a good idea why she’s relieving herself on your bed. I don’t know much about your living situation, but cats should not be caged or crated for long periods of time, and only to protect them from harm -- not as a barrier or punishment. Cats are very different from dogs, and using a cage will not “train” her to do anything but be more angry. And cats will express anger and frustration in a way that you can’t miss. Her relieving habit is most likely directly related to being stuck in the cage. She knows full well that you sleep on that bed! I’ve had only one cat do the same to me, and it was entirely my fault. I accidentally shut him in my bedroom as I left for work. Cut off from my other cat, his food and his litter box, he expressed his displeasure quite clearly. But it only happened once. I made sure he was out of the room from then on before closing the door, and he never again was put in that position of having only one way to communicate. If you don’t want your cat to soil the bed, keep her outside of your bedroom. Even if you’re in a studio and can’t close off the bedroom, you can screen the bed (literally -- a roll of window screening at the hardware store costs less than 10 dollars) to keep her away. But she needs relatively free rein around the rest of the house or apartment, access to food and her litter box, and a view of the outside. And put the cage into a closet, out of sight. Don’t use it unless you’re transporting her to the vet. Send your pet questions to Sam Mazzotta at ask@pawscorner. com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Twin Titans A few weeks back, a few of you may remember, I put together a list of the decade’s best athletes, seen from a sporting view. Yes, we overlooked a few off-field indiscretions while making our list (Tiger Woods’ sizzling sex life and Michael Phelps smoky socializations come to mind). And we had little choice than to overlook an on-court one (Serena Williams is too good to kick her off a decade’s best list for cursing out a ref). But there were two glaring omissions in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. It was my fault, of course ... I wrote the column. After a few sleepless nights, I consulted my editor and we decided that rather than do a third column, let’s just pretend they were both implied. I was able to sleep after that because really, it’s true. Anyone who doesn’t think those two are among the best ever -- let alone last decade -- probably isn’t reading the sports section or this column anyway. Besides, I knew I’d get a chance to write about them both again. Mr. Manning, not surprisingly, was the first to check in a few weeks later in the Super Bowl. I’ll admit, I didn’t get to see the likes of Sammy Baugh and I’ve only seen Johnny Unitas on tape, but I don’t think there’s been a better quarterback in the league than Peyton Manning. Not only does the guy possess a cannon for an arm, a field general’s intellect and the constitution of a horse, he’s been a great spokesman for the league and role model for our youth. But I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a ninth-year quarterback with more upside than the 30-year-old Drew Brees. Still basking in the afterglow of the Super Bowl, the notion that there can be another titan of a quarterback is starting to sink in with fans and players of the league alike. His performance in that game was a masterpiece seen by the most television viewers in history, and it’s likely to stand the test of time, replayed over and over again in highlight reels. It was fitting that Phil Simms was in the booth, announcing the game. Besides being my favorite color commentator, his ability to describe the on-field actions of Brees and Manning made the telecast even more enjoyable (and FOX

www.gobestschool.com should be lauded for resisting the urge to play up the Hurricane Katrina footage or Kim Kardashian shots during the game ... well done). When he showed how Brees shortened his throwing motion to avoid being stripped, it made me aware that we were watching a quarterback at the top of his game. Already at the mountaintop, one can’t help but be excited for what’s yet to come for Brees and Manning alike. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Kansas City Luminary.
