TIDBITS® SIZZLES AS

THE HEAT IS ON! by Patricia L. Cook During the summer months in the northern hemisphere — NOW — the heat is on and many people head to beaches to enjoy the sun, sand and water. So, slather on a bit of sunscreen as you read some Tidbits about

beaches!

• Even land-locked areas boast beaches on their lakes and rivers, and people use those for summer fun. But the majority of beach fun happens on the coasts. The Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, Hawaii are the largest areas of coastline for North America. • States and provinces with the longest coastlines make the most of their beaches when it comes to tourism. Florida is the beach capital of the continental United States, but for those who are able to hop on an airplane for a beach, Hawaii is definitely a state to visit; after all, as a group of islands, the state is surrounded by water. • A number of beaches claim to be the “world’s longest beach.” Long Beach, Washington, has a big sign proclaiming that on its beach. However, it is only about 25 miles (40 km) long. It does have some terrific claims to fame though. It is a peninsula that sits north of where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and is where Lewis and Clark stopped on their trek across the west in 1805.

• David Pace actually came from a syrup-making family in Louisiana and started the company as a syrup and condiment business. Then he decided that the real “syrup of the Southwest” is Mexican salsa. Pace said it was the 1970s hippies who boosted his sales: “No question but this health stuff made the whole category explode!” Pace Picante Sauce has become an iconic tomato product like Campbell’s Tomato Soup. Campbell’s actually bought Pace Foods from the family in San Antonio in 1994 for $1.1 billion. • How about a little hot trivia? Pace Foods uses more than 25 million pounds (11,339,809 kg) of fresh jalapeños every year! They are hand picked across the southern United States and Mexico.

You Can’t Steal First Billy Sunday began preaching when he was 20 years old, but the congregation -- led by Cap Anson and the rest of the hardscrabble Chicago White Stockings of 1883 -wasn’t easily converted.

• Pace is not alone in the salsa field of retail sales. There are many brands and many flavors that fill grocery store shelves. There are also many Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, as well as top chefs and gourmet restaurants, that now offer their own style of salsa all over the world.

Sunday had approached Anson, bragging that he was “about the fastest fielder on earth.” Anson decided to give the kid, a former track star from Ames, Iowa, a chance. Speed was integral for the early game of baseball. Home runs were rare. The leader for the team in the category 786.487.1288 was an outfielder named Kelly. He hit three all year. applerepair@me.com • Salsa, while not considered “health food” per se, is They called him “King.” We Make Office & definitely healthy. HOT SALSA Salsa is the Spanish word for hot sauce. Whether you like it hot, medium or mild, it is a taste that has grown in popularity in North America in the last 20 years.

• The percentage of American households buying salsa, increased from 16 percent to 36 percent between 1988 and 1992. Salsa passed ketchup as the No. 1 condiment in America in 2000. Salsa sales have not shown any sign of slowing in 2011. It seems that our north of the border tastebuds sure love the tastes that have come from our neighbors to the south!

“Hey, Sunday,” the famously animated Anson was said to have yelled from the bench. “You can’t steal first base!” Sunday eventually did turn out to be a pretty decent ballplayer (but he was a poor fielder). Even when he was struggling, Sunday stayed in the lineup because there was one place he could keep up: at the bar. The 1884 World Series ended in a tie, and Anson was said to have blamed rampant drinking as the reason for his team’s lack of execution. Try as he might, he lamented, he could not get the team to come in early at night. Once the well-paid White Stockings hit State Street, they were in it until last call. That made it difficult for the players to find their stroke the next day. It was on one such night that Sunday found more than his stroke -- he found God. Stepping out of a bar, he ran into a congregation of missionaries from Chicago’s Pacific Garden Mission (which still stands on State Street to this day). Immediately struck by the singing of gospel hymns, Sunday listened and waved off requests from his friends to move on to the next bar. Turning to them, he announced that he had been saved. “Boys, I’m finished with this wild life. I’m going into the service of God. I’ve seen the light!” Sunday quit the game immediately, turning down large sums of money in the process, in order to become an evangelist. All but forgotten today, Sunday was the Billy Graham of his day, and his fiery sermons against the perils of “booze” led to more than a million converts to Christianity and the passage of Prohibition.

• The mixing of tomatoes, onions, hot peppers and other ingredients for salsa has been happening since at least as far back as the 1500s in Central and South America among the Aztecs and other cultures. • A Spanish priest and missionary, Alonso de Molina, is credited with calling the hot sauce mix “salsa” in 1571. • The first bottled hot sauce appeared in the United States in Massachusetts in 1807. In 1868, Edmund McIlhenny started bottling his hot sauce, Tabasco, on Avery Island, west of New Orleans. Tabasco hot sauce surged in popularity and continues to be a huge seller. Other hot sauces soon emerged, and many have been around for 100-plus years like Tabasco. • Charles Erath of New Orleans manufactured a salsa product in 1916 called “Extract of Louisiana Pepper” Red Hot Creole Sauce. It, like Tabasco, was a hot sauce but not a dippable salsa. • In 1917, La Victoria Foods in Los Angeles started making Salsa Brava, a true salsa. It wasn’t until 1941 that Henry Tanklage formed the La Victoria Sales Company to market the first salsa hot sauces in the United States.

Sunday, like Anson, proved capable of turning a phrase, too. “Whiskey and beer are all right in their place, but their place is in hell.” Cheers! Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Parkville (Mo.) Luminary. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

younger, less pricey cast members in order to save more money and appeal to a younger audience online? After all, it is called “All My CHILDREN”! In true soap fashion, we’ll just have to stay tuned! *** Jack Nicholson will go before the cameras in the film “Americana,” scheduled for a December 2012 release. Set in the Confederate south in l860, Nicholson will play a farmer and slave owner who flees to Brazil and finds a new love and a fresh start, only to be haunted by his past. Kate Winslet is said to be his leading lady. And speaking of Kate, she has been nominated for an Emmy for her starring role in “Mildred Pierce,” the five-part miniseries reboot of the 1945 film that Joan Crawford won an Oscar for. HBO’s “Mildred Pierce” has netted a record 21 Emmy nominations, including one for Winslet as best actress in a mini-series. She has just completed the film version of the Broadway hit “God of Carnage” with Oscar winners Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz and “Chicago” Oscar nominee John C. Reilly. The film will have its first showing at the Venice Film Festival in September. It was shot in Paris in February, with controversial award-winning director Roman Polanski at the helm. Before Kate, who won an Oscar in ‘08 for “The Reader,” shoots with Nicholson, she will film “Labor Day” in early 2012 for director Jason Reitman (“Juno”). Josh Brolin will be her leading man. James Gandolfini, Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden and Jeff Daniels of the original Broadway cast were completely shut out of the film version. Fixing a Slamming Door Q: My front door swings open and shut way too quickly. This means when my son pushes the door open, it bangs against the doorstop on the wall so hard I’m afraid it will crack the drywall behind it. And when he swings it shut, it slams. How can I fix this (besides teaching my son to be more conscientious about how he enters the house)? -- Ellen D., Philadelphia A: There are a couple of things you can try. To slow down the swinging, remove the pin from the top hinge of the door. Your son can be your helper by holding the door in place while you stand on a safe stepladder to take out the pin. Wrap the pin in clear tape -- just one thin layer. Reinsert into the top hinge, and test the door. If this doesn’t slow down the swing, wrap one more layer around the pin. This should create enough friction to stop the super-fast, free swing. You may need to reapply tape after several months, however. If the door banging shut is too loud, try using foam weather stripping to cushion the frame. Adhesive-backed foam stripping is available at home improvement stores in different widths. Try the thinnest width available. Pre-test the stripping before gluing it down. With the paper backing still on, unroll the strip along the inside of the door frame where the door closes against it. Put a little clear tape at the top and bottom to hold it, and test the door. Does it shut easily, or do you have difficulty getting it to latch with the strip in place?

They can even paint the dough before it’s been cooked, and then see how the design spreads and settles.

If it’s difficult, and you have the thinnest weather stripping available, try placing a small half-inch long piece at the top and bottom of the door frame and test the door again. This small amount of stripping should muffle the noise somewhat.

HOME TIP: Does your door stick or lightly scrape the floor when you open it? Tape a piece of sandpaper to the area and push the door back and forth over it to try and sand down the bottom of the door a bit. Just use the cut side of a lemon to scrub the board, let it sit for up to 10 minutes, and rinse clean.

• If you have stubborn shellac on your paintbrush, try dissolving it by soaking it in alcohol. Make sure you do this in a well-ventilated area.

• If you’re stuffing pillows or a child’s toy with foamrubber chips, rub a bit of fabric softener over your hands first. The tiny pieces won’t get stuck to your hands with static, and it will smell nice to boot!

• Need a funnel quickly? Double a sheet of aluminum foil and roll into a funnel shape. It works!

• Here’s a fun activity for the kids: Let them “paint” cookies. Using clean craft brushes or watercolor brushes, the kids can use food coloring to paint designs on cookies.

Broken Heart Not Just Figure of Speech DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Last December, my husband called the paramedics when I did not respond to him. They rushed me to the hospital when I began convulsing. I have no recollection of any of this. When I woke one week later, I was in the ICU. I was told that I had broken-heart syndrome. I also was told it has to do with blood pressure. Can you confirm that there is such a thing? -- A. ANSWER: Broken-heart syndrome is for real. It’s a recent addition to the catalog of illnesses. Japanese doctors first described it, and called it Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a heart illness that affects the heart muscle, not the heart arteries or heart valves. The classical case is one where a person develops severe chest discomfort preceded by physical or emotional stress. The emotional stress could be the unexpected death of a loved one. An EKG shows a pattern that replicates the pattern of a heart attack. The heart’s function is greatly compromised. It doesn’t pump blood like it should, and that can lower blood pressure. Seizures are not included in the list of symptoms. However, a drop in blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain. That can trigger seizures. The explanation for this is a surge in the body’s stress chemicals that affect heart function. Damage to the heart muscle isn’t permanent. The heart returns to good health in a matter of weeks. You didn’t mention any prior stress. Do you recollect any? On the plus side, your heart arteries are in good shape, and you ought not to suffer a recurrence. The booklet on congestive heart failure does not address broken-heart syndrome specifically, but it does detail a more common condition, its treatment and its prognosis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have weak kidneys due to type 1 diabetes. My doctor has me eating three fruits a day and four vegetables. He limited my meat to 6 ounces daily. Does this limitation of meat benefit my kidneys? -- E.L. ANSWER: Many times, when the kidneys aren’t working up to par (weak kidneys), doctors put their patients on a reduced-protein diet. It slows the decline of kidney function. That’s why your doctor limited your meat (protein) intake.

• Born in Dothan, Alabama, in 1973, Whitestone looked to another deaf Alabaman, Helen Keller, as her role model. Keller’s determination became determination for Whitestone as well. She worked hard to learn in school, attending Central School for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri, for a few years when she had fallen behind in regular school. She passed six reading levels in three years, catching up with her peers. Whitestone graduated from a public high school in Birmingham, Alabama, with a 3.6 grade point average.

She didn’t know she had won until Miss Virginia turned to her and pointed as she hugged her. • With her win, Whitestone became the first person with a disability to win the title of Miss America. Another interesting Tidbit about the 1995 pageant: The telecast lasted for three hours, the longest in pageant history. The organization highlighted its 75-year history during the program. • During her reign, Whitestone showcased her program called S.T.A.R.S., which stands for “Success Through Action and Realization of your DreamS.” The five points of the S.T.A.R.S. program are: positive attitude, belief in a dream, willingness to work hard, facing obstacles, and building a strong support team. • Showing such great determination to reach her goals and overcome obstacles, Whitestone is a great role model for people of all ages and abilities. She worked hours to learn to dance and speak. She didn’t let her lack of hearing discourage her from reaching her dreams. • Whitestone has written four books since touring the country as Miss America. They are: “Listening with My Heart” (1997), “Believing the Promise” (1999), “Let God Surprise You” (2003) and “Heavenly Crowns” (2004). • Whitestone is married and has three sons. She is a motivational speaker affiliated with the Washington Speaker’s Bureau. Some of the topics she speaks on are: achievement, Christian faith & inspiration, courage and overcoming obstacles and challenges.

There are other ways to watch inexpensive movies, however, if you know where to look. If you don’t already have a means of streaming movies, check into the Roku [www.roku.com], a nifty little streaming box. It comes in three levels: $60, $80 and $100. Price is determined by high-definition level (720p or 1080p), but all come with built-in wireless. Be sure to hunt around the settings to see all that’s offered with Roku -- more than 300 channels with music, movies and shows. Many of the services, such as Crackle, are free. Hulu Plus and Amazon offer inexpensive access to movies. Pandora, the movie channel, is free. You’ll find EPIX movies and ondemand sports. Additionally, with Roku you’ll have access (some free) to some international movies and television shows. And yes, you can access Netflix if you have the streaming option. If you only want to stream to your computer or mobile phone, check Zediva [www.Zediva.com] for $1.99 new movie rentals. And here’s a bonus: You don’t have to pay with a credit card on its site. You can pay with PayPal if you prefer. Bigger bonus: If you pay for a package of 10 movies, the cost drops to a dollar apiece. However, due to the way Zediva has set up its relationship with the movie studios, only a certain number of copies of a given movie are available at any one time. Read the FAQ to be sure you understand the limits. If you’re a parent and going to be in the market for a new DVD player soon, consider getting one of the inexpensive combo DVD and VCR players. You can save money on the kids’ movies by shopping yard sales, where you can find hundreds of older VHS movies for a fraction of the cost of the DVD version. (You’ll also be less upset when the kids unwind a movie tape than you would be if they scratch a new DVD.)

CORRECTION: It was recently reported in this column (as well as many other entertainment columns) that Mariska Hargitay would be in only 13 episodes of this coming season’s “Law and Order: SVU.” Well, I am happy to amend that report with news from the Big Guy himself: Showrunner and executive producer Warren Leight contacted me to dispel the rumor. He told me: “Mariska will be in all 22 ‘SVU’ episodes this season. Rumor she is leaving at 13 just wrong.” With Christopher Meloni’s Detective Stabler leaving, it’s a relief to learn Mariska’s Detective Benson will be sticking around. *** Q: It seems like every other year, there is a rumor that “Jurassic Park 4” is going to made. But so far, no movie. Will it ever happen? -- Paul G., Miami A: All signs point to “yes.” Producer/director Steven Spielberg told a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fans at last month’s San Diego ComicCon fan convention that there will be another “Jurassic Park,” and it might be only two to three years away. Steven said that he has a story and a screenwriter ready to go for the fourth movie of the dinosaur-clone series, and Steven himself will serve as producer. *** Q: I really love MTV’s new teen comedy, “Awkward.” The actor who plays Matty looks really familiar. Can you tell me what else I might have seen him in recently? -- Cara D., via e-mail A: Beau Mirchoff, 21, plays Matty, the nice-guy jock with a heart -- and it appears he also has a thing for our heroine, Jenna. You might remember Beau from “Heartland,” or from his turn as Drea de Matteo’s son on “Desperate Housewives.” Of his year on “DH,” Beau told me: “I learned so much from all the people on that set. They are pros, and they know what they’re doing. I learned a lot from Jeffrey Nordling, who played my father, and Drea de Matteo, who was my mother. I had a big crush on Drea. I hope it didn’t read on camera. That would have been creepy.” Playing a teen on “Awkward” has Beau remembering his own awkward time in high school: “Everything seems like such a dire situation. Like it’s the last time you’ll be able to do something. Or it’s the end of the world if you can’t go out with that girl. But it’s really not, and it’s so insignificant looking back. But you’re growing up and you’re figuring things out.” *** Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of singer Amy Winehouse. Do authorities know what caused her death? -Grant D., via e-mail A: Toxicology reports will probably take weeks to get back, so it might be a while before we know what killed the troubled songstress, who was only 27 when she passed away on July 23. Amy had publicly battled addiction, but police say there were no signs of drug or paraphernalia in her home at the time of her death. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. favorite hiding places can be a lifesaving advantage in an emergency. With Sugar, unfortunately, this was not the case, as she was found several blocks away. There was nothing more her owners could do without putting themselves in mortal danger (something else that is important to keep in mind in an emergency).

But in a less extreme emergency, when there’s time to gather the family and pets, or when your pet is having a health emergency, you’ll be able to find your pet faster, or direct emergency personnel to where your pet normally hides, if you know where that hiding place is. Know Your Pet’s ‘Safe Area’ DEAR READERS: I recently received a report from the University of Missouri about a dog named “Sugar,” a Cocker Spaniel who was badly injured in the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. When her owners grabbed her and ran for the safety of their basement shelter, “Sugar, sensing the increased fear of her owners, became panicky and bolted back upstairs to her own ‘safe area,” a spot under one of the beds.’ With the tornado almost atop their house, the owners could not leave the shelter to retrieve her. Sugar survived the tornado, although she was badly injured and had lost use of her hind legs. Veterinarians at the University of Missouri performed emergency surgery to correct the injury to her spine. After many days of physical rehabilitation and therapy, Sugar is recovering with her owners. In addition to this encouraging story of recovery, what caught my interest was that Sugar’s owners knew exactly where she preferred to hide when something scary was happening. This doesn’t seem like much, but knowing your pet’s
