• November 18, 1928, is considered the birthday of Mickey Mouse. It’s the day he debuted in “Steamboat Willie” at New York City’s Colony Theater. Starring as a riverboat deckhand, Mickey’s voice was that of Walt Disney himself. Mickey had actually appeared six months earlier in a cartoon short entitled “Plane Crazy” with Minnie Mouse at his side, but “Willie” was the first of his cartoons with sound. Mickey didn’t appear in color until 1935. He went on to star in more than 120 different cartoons, and was voiced by Disney until 1946. Mickey was the first cartoon character to receive a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

• A different kind of mouse regularly defended the citizens of Mouseville. Wearing a yellow jersey and red cape, inspired by the Superman character, Mighty Mouse came to the rescue, singing, “Here I come to save the day!” This superhero squelched the threats of villain Oil Can Harry against the townspeople, and more specifically, his girlfriend Pearl Pureheart.

• Wearing a Roman soldier’s uniform of helmet and skirt, Marvin the Martian was modeled after Mars, the Roman god of war. He was forever trying to destroy the Earth with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator, but his efforts were outwitted every time by the clever Bugs Bunny. These failed attempts made him “very angry, very angry indeed.” • In the midst of the Cold War, the world of cartoons had its token Russian spies, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. These bumbling villains attempted to do the will of their Fearless Leader, such as stealing secret rocket fuel formulas. All the while, Natasha called everyone “dollink” as Boris snapped, “Sharrup you mouth!” Natasha was voiced by June Foray, whose other credits include Dudley DoRight’s lady friend Nell Fenwick, Rocky the flying squirrel, Tweety’s owner Granny and Lucifer the Cat in Disney’s 1950 production “Cinderella.” • The Jetsons were just an average family living in the year 2062. Their home in Orbit City’s Skypad Apartments was filled with futuristic, labor-saving devices. George Jetson’s work life consisted of pushing a computer button three hours a day, three days a week at Spacely Space Sprockets. Jane was assisted in her wifely duties by the robot maid Rosie. The series, produced between 1962 and 1963, was the first program on ABC to be broadcast in color. • “Ruh-roh!” became a common expression after it was frequently used by the Jetsons’ dog Astro. Voice actor Don Messick was the source for “Rats Rall Right, Reorge!” You might recognize his voice as that of other cartoon dogs Scooby-Doo and Muttley.

• A 1945 cartoon entitled “Hare Trigger” introduced a cantankerous red-haired cowboy with an extreme dislike of rabbits. After several cartoons featuring the meek and mild Elmer Fudd as Bugs Bunny’s adversary, Yosemite Sam was created as a more formidable foe who was not so easily put off. With six-guns in hand, Sam frequently thundered at Bugs, “Say your prayers, Varmint!” He was voiced by Mel Blanc, who had undergone a spell of road rage on the day he came up with Sam’s voice and merely screamed at the top of his lungs. • Known as “The Man of a Thousand Voices,” Mel Blanc was the voice behind many of our favorites, including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Sylvester, Tweety, Foghorn Leghorn, Wile E. Coyote, Woody Woodpecker, Speedy Gonzales, Barney Rubble, Pepe LePew and George Jetson’s boss Mr. Spacely. He set a record of the longest voiceover, having spoken for Daffy Duck for 52 years. The inscription on Blanc’s gravestone appropriately reads, “That’s All, Folks.” • “I yam what I yam,” is muttered in a gravelly voice by a rough and ready, muscular sailor with anchor tattoos. Popeye was created in 1929 as a comic strip by E.C. Segar but didn’t hit the movie screen until 1933. The woman of his dreams, Olive Oyl and her brother Castor Oyl, were on the scene 10 years before Popeye. • Popeye was well known for eating spinach for strength, and he sang, “I’m strong to the finich, ‘cause I eats me spinach.” He was so popular during the 1930s that there was a 33percent increase in spinach consumption during that decade. The sailor’s family members included his adopted baby son Baby Swee’ Pea, nephews Pipeye, Pupeye, Poopeye, and Peepeye, and father Poopdeck Pappy. Hamburger-loving Wimpy and the bully Bluto completed the cast.
• A similarly-named sweetheart, Sweet Polly Purebred, was the love interest of the endearing Shoeshine Boy. When danger was imminent, the Boy quietly slipped into a nearby phone booth and retrieved a Super Vitamin Pill from his ring’s secret compartment, exiting the booth as Underdog. Polly was a TV reporter, who could be heard pleading, “Oh where, oh where, has my Underdog gone?” • Chrysler paid $50,000 to Warner Brothers for the privilege of using the cartoon image of the Road Runner on the side of the Plymouth Road Runner muscle car, which began manufacture in 1968. They also expended $10,000 to develop a horn with a “Beep, Beep!” sound effect. • Who knows how a cartoon with a dog named Too Much would have fared? Probably not as well as Scooby Doo, the name Hanna and Barbera opted to use for the lovable Great Dane. Originally, Daphne was to be known as Kelly, Fred as Geoff, Velma as Linda, and Shaggy as W.W. The program was slated to be called “W-Who’s S-S-Scared” with a sheepdog named Too Much. As the CBS producer was reviewing the artwork, he was listening to a Frank Sinatra recording of “Strangers in the Night,” and the lyrics reminded him of “Scooby-dooby-doo.” The sheepdog was axed and the Great Dane was in. • Do you recognize the names of Lazy, Clumsy, Brainy, Harmony, Greedy and Jokey? No, they’re not part of the Seven Dwarfs, they are the Smurfs, those blue-hued creatures created by a Belgian cartoonist named Peyo. Although they were first seen in 1958, they didn’t appear in North America until 1981 when the series was picked up by NBC. Papa Smurf and his crew won several Emmy Awards before their cancellation in 1990. • “Oh curses, foiled again!” was the line regularly delivered by arch villain Snidely Whiplash on “The Dudley Do-right Show.” Canadian Mountie Do-right spent his time riding his horse backwards across the countryside, rescuing the fair damsel in distress Nell Fenwick, whom Snidely frequently lashed to the railroad tracks. • Before he was Elmer Fudd, he was known as Egghead, and was created by Tex Avery with an egg-shaped head on a pudgy body with a bulbous nose. After a little re-designing, Elmer as we know him made his debut opposite Bugs Bunny in the 1940 cartoon feature “A Wild Hare.”

TIDBITS AND MUSIC:
CARTOON THEME SONGS How many times has a catchy little theme song gotten stuck in your head? Here’s a stroll down memory lane, remembering some of those cartoon jingles that we loved to hum. • Many of us know that Spiderman “does whatever a spider can.” But what comes after “spins a web, any size”? It’s “catches thieves just like flies!” His superhuman strength is explained in verse two of the theme song. “Listen, Bud. He’s got radioactive blood.” • The little blue Smurfs administered good advice when they sang to their viewers, “Next time you’re feeling blue, just let a smile begin, happy things will come to you.” • If you didn’t know all the names of the Jetson family, they were given to you in the theme song, “Meet George Jetson, Jane his wife, daughter Judy, his boy Elroy.” • A bear of very little brain lived deep in the Hundred-Acre Wood. This “tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff” was, of course, Winnie the Pooh, that “willy nilly silly old bear.” • He was “one tough Gazookus which hates all Palookas.” He “biffed ‘em and buffed ‘em and always out-roughed ‘em.” Who sang these words during the opening of his program? Popeye, of course! • There were no words to sing along to for “Jonny Quest.” A 20-member jazz band, heavy on the drums, provided the music for this cartoon. • When do you need to “step aside or you might end up in a heap”? That would be “when you’re on a highway and the Roadrunner goes ‘Beep! Beep!’” • “He always says ‘Hello’ and he’s really glad to meetcha.
BOCA RATON: 4201 N.W. OAK CIRCLE, BOCA RATON, FL 33432
The children all love him so.” Who is he? He’s Casper the Friendly Ghost, created in the late 1930s and hitting the screen in 1950. • He was “strong as he can be.” But he frequently forgot to “watch out for that tree.” He was George of the Jungle, a not-so-bright, loincloth-clad parody of Tarzan. The program aired for only 17 episodes in 1967. • Words spoken over the final movement of Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” provided the opening for the “Lone Ranger” series. The animated version of the 1930s radio program aired from 1966 to 1968. “HiYo, Silver! Away!” was the cry of this “daring and resourceful masked rider of the Plains” who “led the fight for law and order in the early West” along with his fearless Indian friend Tonto. • The “world’s most fearsome fighting team” were “really hip” according to the theme song. These green “heroes in a half-shell” were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, named after four Renaissance artists. They started battling crime from their home in the storm sewers of New York City in 1987. • How did that modern Stone Age family, the Flintstones, ride with the family down the street? It was “through the courtesy of Fred’s two feet!” • Josie and the Pussycats had “no time for purrs and pats” as they donned their “long tails and ears for hats.” This all-girl pop music group toured the word in their leopardprint leotards, encountering all sorts of adventures with miscellaneous villains. Each episode featured a Pussycats song played during the girls’ various chase scenes.

WALT DISNEY Nearly everyone on Earth is familiar with the creations of genius Walt Disney. Follow his path from humble beginnings on a Missouri farm to film mogul and theme partk creator. • An artist from childhood, Disney was already selling sketches at age seven. In high school, he worked on the school newspaper while attending night school at the Academy of Fine Arts. • In 1918, Walt tried to enlist in the military but was turned away because he was only 16. His alternative was to sign up with the Red Cross, who sent him overseas. He spent a year driving an ambulance, decorated from top to bottom with his drawings and cartoons. He served in a unit with Ray Kroc, who, decades later, would found the McDonald’s fast food chain. • Disney’s career in advertising began after the conclusion of World War I. In 1920, he created his first animated cartoons, and three years later, headed for Hollywood with $40 to his name. He joined up with his brother Roy, and the two borrowed $500 and built a camera stand in their uncle’s garage where they started production of cartoon “featurettes.” • Mickey Mouse hit the big screen in 1928, and four years later, Disney was awarded the first of his many Oscars for a film entitled “Flowers and Trees.” • In the midst of the Great Depression, Disney produced “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” for the astronomical sum of $1,499,000. It took two million illustrations using 1,500 shades of paint to create the 1937 masterpiece. Fifty different names were considered for the dwarfs, including Gabby, Blabby, Hotsy, Nifty and Shifty. Disney had first conceived the idea for the film at age 15, when he saw a silent film version of the tale. • Although “Snow White” featured eight songs, 25 songs were originally composed for the feature. It quickly became the highest grossing film of all time, a record it held only until 1939, when “Gone with the Wind” surpassed it. Walt built Disney Studios in Burbank, California, with the profits from “Snow White.” Over the next five years, he released “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” “Dumbo” and “Bambi.” • As early as August of 1948, Walt Disney was thinking of building an amusement park called “Mickey Mouse Park.” In 1955, he opened his 400-acre Magic Kingdom, Disneyland, in Anaheim, with a price tag of $17 million. It was Walt’s intention that Disneyland would, “never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world.” Indeed, new attractions are added on a regular basis.

$350 A MONTH Asthmatic Cat Needs Veterinarian’s Opinion DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was wondering what kind of medicine to give a cat that has asthma. My cat “Jack” had an asthma attack last night. Are there any home remedies I can use? -- Cathy S., via e-mail
Pets YORKIE BABIES: Very cute, smaller girl $550; boy, has teddy bear face $400. Both grandfathers are champions. 850-691-8286 or 850-769-8758.

New Evening Classes Begin Every Monday Only $200 per Month
DEAR CATHY: Only your veterinarian can determine the right medicine to give to your cat. It’s very important that you take Jack to the vet for a complete checkup in the next few days. (If he seems distressed or continues to have trouble breathing, take him to vet right away.) Tell the vet the symptoms Jack had during his asthma attack -- any wheezing, distress or odd behavior before the attack, and any weakness or lethargy before, during or after. If he has shown the symptoms before, describe when they occurred and the intensity.
www.gobestschool.com
Don’t try to diagnose Jack’s problem yourself, and don’t try a home remedy until a proper diagnosis has been made. There are some very important reasons for this. First, cats can “wheeze” due to something as benign as a hairball, or as serious as an undiagnosed heart problem. Only your vet can tell. Second, the type of problem, and its extent, is a big part of determining what medicine to give the cat. Only your vet can do this. This is not to put down home remedies for pets. Many owners swear by homeopathic remedies developed to treat common pet issues like anxiety, and every cat owner knows how most cats react to catnip -- an herb that can be grown on a windowsill. But most acute illnesses need professional medical diagnosis and treatment so Jack can recover quickly and return to a healthy norm. Send your pet questions and tips to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. With the high humidity in south Florida mold is a constant problem on patios and in bathrooms. There are dozens of cleaners sold but they contain harsh and environmentally harmful chemicals. There are several environmentally friendly products that you probably already have around the house or can purchase locally and use for several other cleaning projects around the house as well as eliminating mold. On one of my many, ‘it’s three in the morning, why can’t I sleep’ adventures I searched the web and compiled a good list of products that can help fight mold. Borax A teaspoon of environmentally gentle dish washing liquid and a teaspoon of borax mixed with one quart warm water; pour into a spray bottle, soak the affected area for as long as possible; rinse and air dry. Eucalyptus oil One tablespoon of eucalyptus oil, one tablespoon of methylated spirits and two cups of water mixed together and placed in a spray bottle; apply and leave to dry. Grapefruit (or citrus) seed extract Mix 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract with 2 cups of water; place in a spray bottle and apply. Leave to dry Vinegar 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water mix, again sprayed on and left to dry. Baking soda Pour 1 part vinegar and 1 part warm water into a bowl, and then add 2 parts baking soda to make a thick paste. Apply and leave to dry, and then scrub off. Repeat if the mold is particularly stubborn. Tea tree oil 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil mixed with 2 cups of water. Place in spray bottle and mix well. Again, don’t rinse Most of the above are safe to use on bathroom tiles and ground; exercise caution with other materials. Regardless, spot test first.
