TIDBITS® HAS SOME FUN

SCOOTING AROUND by Patricia L. Cook

Now that the weather is warming, and spring is officially here, you probably have noticed more two-wheeled vehicles on the streets. Let’s explore the popular rides called “scooters.” Most of them don’t go very fast, but they sure go a long way on one tank of gas! • The first powered two-wheeled vehicles that were the predecessors to motor scooters and motorcycles were patented in Munich, Germany, in 1894. Hildebrand & Wolfmueller used a twin cylinder watercooled engine and a step-through frame. • Some of the first scooters in North America were made by Cushman in Nebraska. They were used by the Army, Navy and Air Force in World War II and included an airborne model made to be dropped by parachute. Cushman manufactured motor scooters from 1936 until 1965. • Another scooter introduced in 1936 was the Salisbury Motor Glide. Built in Pomona, California, it was fully equipped with a horn, lights and collapsible handlebars. The 1938 models had the first automatic transmissions. From 1947-1950, Salisbury sold the very popular model 85 Super Scooter, believed to be the world’s first maxi scooter. The sleek model could reach 50 miles per hour (80.5 kph) and is a sought after collectible today.

are very expensive and in cities where parking is a problem, scooters are all over the place. • Problems with scooters in the early years discouraged some buyers: They had loud two-stroke engines, they were known to have parts fall off, and they didn’t last very long. In spite of these problems, the companies did a good job selling them with advertising that made them look like must-haves for “cool” people. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fell in love while riding a Vespa in the movie “Roman Holiday.” Scooters were romanticized as much as horse-drawn carriages.

• Vespa is the brand name for scooters built by the 1st stage Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program Piaggio Company in Italy It’s About Science, Discipline and Support whose production started in 1946. They produced SCOOTING AROUND (continued): 2,484 Vespas in their first year; the second year production jumped to 10,535, and almost 50 years later, in 1994, • During and shortly after World War II, the Cushman Piaggio built over 10 million of the fun machines. So, where Scooter Company was the main manufacturer of scooters, did they get the name? Vespas make a buzzing sound like a and they were producing about 300 scooters a day. In the wasp — the Italian word for wasp is “vespa.” Many people post-war world, scooters were very popular because they tend to call all scooters Vespas. were economical. Japan, France and Italy started making their own models. • The Piaggio Company was one of several former military aircraft companies that started producing scooters after • The U.S. Department of Transportation definition for World War II. Its Vespa was ahead of its time with many a scooter is a motorcycle that has “a platform for the new features. It had easy-to-change tires, a hidden engine operator’s feet or has integrated footrests,” and has a “step- that cut down on noise and messiness, and its parts were through architecture.” better protected from the elements. These machines were seen as more durable and desirable. By 1960, Vespas were • Scooter owners and admirers sometimes refer to being manufactured in Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, scooters as “putt-putts!” In countries where cars and gas France, Spain and still in Italy as well. info@myhcgprogram.com

• Another early scooter in Europe that came about after the Vespa was the Lambretta. It was built by plumber Ferdinando Innocenti with its frame made out of pipes. He wanted to build a more affordable scooter. The name Lambretta came from the Lambro River, which was the site of the factory, near Milan, Italy. • The Rabbit and the Pigeon were two of the first scooters built in Japan, by Fuji and Mitsubishi, respectively. These filled a need for cheap transportation in the far-eastern market from the late 1940s to the 1960s. • With Cushman and Vespa selling scooters in the United States at a very fast pace, Harley-Davidson, the only made-in-America motorcycle company in 1959, decided to manufacture some of the popular small machines. Their ads said, “Tops them all in beauty! Tops them all in performance!” However, it’s estimated that only about 3,000 sold in the five years they were made. A nice 1960 model is on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio. • By the late 1960s and early 1970s, scooter popularity faded in America. People were more interested in sports cars and saw scooters as a last-resort ride. • Crowded countries like India, Japan and Taiwan still had a need for cheap transportation and vehicles that didn’t take up a lot of parking space. Today, for example, the population in Taiwan exceeds 23 million. There are more than 11 million registered motor scooters in that country alone, with Kymco motor scooters probably the most popular. • A small company that came along with its first scooter in 1954 was Honda — not so small today. Honda’s scooter history in Japan has been progressing since then, but they didn’t enter the North American market until 1983. Honda has marketed numerous scooter models, from two-strokes to the more environmentally friendly four-stroke models. • Honda’s most popular scooter in North America is called the Metropolitan in the United States and the Jazz in Canada. The same scooter model is known as the Crea and Scoopy overseas. Cool names for cool little scooters, wherever you ride!

LITTLE RED WAGONS

TIDBITS®

April 1, 2011 •

Little red wagons have been a favorite toy for girls and boys for many years. The first were wooden, then metal, and now many are plastic. They continue to amuse the smallest tots and the adults who pull them for rides! • The original red wagons to stores by Antonio Pasin, came to America (Chicago) maker in the early 1900s. finding work but managed save money for a workshop he built wagons at night stores himself. • By 1930, during the Great Depression, parents everywhere wanted little red wagons for their children, and Pasin’s company was the largest producer of the toys. It was in 1930 that the name of the company was changed to Radio Steel & Manufacturing Company. The name of the company’s wagon was changed to Radio Flyer because Pasin was fascinated with the invention of the radio by a fellow Italian and also interested in flying. • Chicago hosted the 1933 World’s Fair, and Pasin’s company was asked to participate in the celebration. This provided a huge boost to the popularity of the “little red wagons.” A 45-foot-tall (13.7 m) “Coaster Boy” standing in the front of a large wagon was the most popular exhibit, and miniatures were sold for 25 cents. If you happen to come across one of these historic collectibles, it is probably worth more than a quarter now! • Antonio Pasin died in 1990 after many years of wagon making. He was the 44th toy innovator inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2003. His grandsons Robert and Paul run the company now. • In 1992, a film titled, “Radio Flyer” used the fun red wagon to show how wagons have “powered the imagination” of children everywhere. • In 1997, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the company, Radio Flyer put the “World’s Largest Wagon™” on display at its headquarters in Chicago. It is 27 feet long (8.2 m), 13 feet wide (4 m) and weighs 15,000 pounds (6,804 kg). • Another larger-than-life wagon that bears the Radio Flyer name is at Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington. It was created for the Centennial Celebration of Children by the Junior League of Spokane in 1990. A great addition to the park, the handle of the wagon is a slide, big enough for adults! Dedicated to children, it is “a reflection of the past, created in the present, to last into the future.” • The Radio Flyer brand is a top brand for toys 97 years after its founder started the company. The company still makes little red wagons and a lot more. They are the No. 1 maker of toy wagons and tricycles today. With some operations in China, Radio Flyer is still headquartered in Chicago. The employees are called “Flyers,” and new employees receive a “welcome wagon” when hired — a wagon of their own to enjoy!

Alec Baldwin, who “rocked” the 2009 Oscar Awards with Steve Martin and “rolls” every week on “30 Rock,” is taking singing lessons for his role in “Rock of Ages.” The movie version of the hit Broadway musical also stars Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and Mary J. Lea Michele sang “Don’t Rain on My Parade” on “Glee” and is the front-runner to fill Barbra Streisand’s shoes in the musical “Funny Girl,” which is headed for Broadway. Streisand, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Fanny Brice, was quoted as saying, “My niece got a DVD of ‘Funny Girl’ and asked why I was singing a song from ‘Glee’!!” Lea’s stage experience in “Ragtime,” “Les Miserables” and “Spring Awakening” on Broadway will come in handy. Spring Heralds Start of Flea Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to write to you about a flea remedy that works for us. My kids and I live in a rural area, and between our two houses have seven dogs and one calico cat. We used to have a very bad flea and tick problem until our local vet recommended using a product called Comfortis. This is a once-a-month tablet -- the dosage is based on the weight of the dog -- that costs much less than Frontline or similar flea and tick treatments. Since starting Comfortis our dogs have been flea- and tick-free. Before we found this product, we would bathe our dogs and cats in a large tub of soapy water with 1/4 cup of Pine-Sol added. That also would kill fleas and ticks. -- Louise C., Rison, Ark.

• Have stubborn stains in the toilet? Put some teeth in your cleaning job by dropping in a denture-cleaning tablet and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and flush. It just might do the job. • “Lighten blemish spots on your skin with lemon juice. Just dab on several times per day.” -- O.M. in Georgia • “Collect small bits of soap into a cup or jar. When you have several, add a tablespoon or two of water to the cup to soften the soap pieces. When they are moderately soft, pour out the contents on a washcloth, fold it over and press into a bar shape with your hands. Peel away the cloth to reveal what should be a reasonably solid new bar of soap.” -- C.T. in Pennsylvania • Save power with this tip: Use cold water to wash towels and jeans. Then hang them to dry -- preferably outside, but on an inside line is OK, too. When they are mostly dry, pop them in the dryer on air dry to fluff them up. Towels and jeans take the longest to dry in the clothes dryer, and use a lot of electricity. • Take soap scum right off your shower curtain -spray with a vinegar-and-water mixture, then throw it in the washer. Hang it right back up, and those mildew stains are gone! • Another great suggestion from L.D.W. in Illinois: When canning or doing another job, “always do the thing you hate first, and then the rest will be easier.” Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. However, I’m not wild about the Pine-Sol bath tip. That’s a very strong cleaning solution that will dry a pet’s skin, which causes irritation, and also removes natural oils on the skin that help repel fleas. The only “household” soap I’d recommend would be Skin-So-Soft, and even that just once a month. Other than that, use a bath product formulated specifically for a dog or cat. To further reduce a pet’s chances of acquiring fleas and ticks, vacuum carpets at least twice weekly indoors and wash curtains and linens frequently. Outside, mow the lawn weekly so it’s not as easy for pests to jump or drop onto a pet’s fur. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My biggest health problem, if you can call it a health problem, is getting to sleep at night. I lie in bed for what seems an eternity before I fall asleep. A friend told me she had the same problem and cured it with melatonin. I’d like to try it if it’s safe. Is it? I am 76 years old and would like a few years of good sleep. -- T.R.

ANSWER: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, a small gland attached to the brain. It conditions the body to adapt to day-night cycles. Melatonin secretion is 10 times greater at night, with peak secretion occurring between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Triptans Offer Some Relief From Migraines

When migraines recur with disrupting regularity, preventive medicines have a place in treatment. They include propranolol (Inderal) and verapamil.

The above “cause” of migraines, I am sure, is not what you wanted. You want to know what brings them on. Triggers for migraine include too little or too much sleep, skipping meals, strong odors, bright lights and loud music. Women often find that menstrual periods will usher in the headaches. Stress, both physical and emotional, can start them. Foods that often serve to initiate a migraine are chocolate, cheeses, fatty foods, sausage, salami, oranges, tomatoes, onions, red wine, peanuts and hot dogs.

A: Jason, 29, has been pretty busy since “Moonlight” ended, guest-starring in “Party Down,” “CSI” and “Lie to Me.” He recently completed filming on the movie “Searching for Sonny,” which also stars one of the newest “Charlie’s Angels,” Minka Kelly. The story follows three friends who return home for their high-school reunion and get sucked into a small-town murder mystery. *** Q: I love it that a lot of networks are now airing new programming over the summer. At first it was only the cable networks, but now it seems the basic cable networks are getting in on the act. Can you tell me what to expect from my favorite network of the Big Four (that being NBC)? -- Fred F., Lansing, Mich. A: NBC recently announced it does indeed have new programming planned for the summer. “America’s Got Talent” returns on Tuesday, May 31. Howie Mandel, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan all will be back as judges, with Nick Cannon again hosting. “The Marriage Ref” returns on Sunday, June 26, while “Law and Order: Los Angeles” continues with new episodes on Mondays. Speaking of “Law and Order,” “Criminal Intent” begins its final season May 30. Also, the final season of “Friday Night Lights” continues well into the summer. New shows include a vocal talent show called “The Voice,” the game show “Still Standing” and an adventure-dating series called “Love in the Wild” -- all premiere in June. *** Q: I really enjoyed Jason Dohring in “Veronica Mars” and “Moonlight.” What is he up to now? -- Mary A., in Oklahoma

Q: My wife and I love “Law and Order,” and we were sad when S. Epatha Merkerson left the show last year. We know she had to leave because she had cancer, so we would like to know her condition. -- Harry T., Essex Junction, Vt. A: Don’t fret -- S. Epatha does NOT have cancer; her character on the show, Lt. Van Buren, had cancer. S. Epatha has said she had a wonderful 16 years on the show, but it was time for her to move on. She recently wrapped filming on the movie “We the Peeples” with Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson. *** READERS: This summer is the summer of contests! First contest: Rachel Fine is not only the gorgeous co-host of the weekly comedy news series “The Bonus Show” for Howard (Stern) TV on Demand, but she also is an accomplished singer. She recently released her first CD of original music, all of which she co-wrote with Timothy Schletter, called “Own Your Own.” I’ll be giving away five autographed copies of the CD -- all you have to do is write to me at letters@cindyelavsky.com or at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, and tell me what you like most about discovering new musical talent. I’ll pick my five favorite entries to win the CDs, and I’ll even print some of the best answers. Deadline is May 15. By : Ali Witherspoon For all the readers out there that want to get in better shape, reduce your medications or just plain feel better I want you to make a commitment to improve your health and fitness level right here, right now. If you are satisfied with your health and fitness levels then I applaud you for either living an active lifestyle that keeps your body moving as well as keeping your mind clear or for having the mental capability to not care. Either way you are doing the right thing for YOU! For those of you that do want to improve without joining a gym, seeking professional guidance, or anything along those lines I want to see if you have what it takes to improve your health and fitness level because the one thing that it takes is commitment above all else. It used to be a time when someone made a commitment it meant something. By today’s standard that means I commit for now, but if something happens that prevents me from living up to that or I don’t feel like it because of one excuse or another then “Oh Well”.

PerFit

PerFit is Not a Gym... It Is Your Personal Fitness Center!

I don’t live in that world. When prospective clients come to me that need to lose a lot of weight, meaning 40+ pounds I first ask them if they’re committed and I tell them not to answer me until they truly think about it and I explain what I mean by commitment. I want them in my studio for 5 straight days through 4 consecutive weeks to walk on the treadmill for 1 hour each day the first month while drinking between 64 to 80 ounces of water each and every day to see if they are truly committed. I tell them they need to understand the time frame to lose 40+ pounds and it is not 3 weeks like some infomercial lies or the dreaded “Biggest Loser Show” (which by the way is one of the worst examples of showing people how to go about losing weight, but that is a whole other article in

For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237 which I will address at a later date), it takes time and the human body takes its time for all things. To be clear on this: if you want to lose weight (no matter how much it is) the guideline you want to use is 1lb per week, 40 pounds equal 40 weeks on average, 10 pounds 10 weeks on average. That is careful slow weight loss and when you lose your weight slowly and allow your body to adjust to those changes then the body has a tendency to keep the weight that you lost off for good! That is not to say you can’t lose weight faster or slower but then it comes down to the amount of time you invest in your goal, individual bio-chemistry, your present metabolism rate, whether your hormones are in line and functioning correctly, how you handle the stress of your lifestyle, how much sleep you give your body and more. There are a lot of factors involved that the average person is completely in the dark about. The people I come across that have this goal of losing weight will ask about prior engagements like play tickets, birthday parties, movie dates, friends or family coming in town, etc.

TIDBITS® The list goes on for more space than I care to allot here. I tell them there are 18 hours in any given work day and that they can come and perform the one hour so that their engagements can be worked around it. Quite frankly, I am not interested in the excuses. We start training at 5:00am and go through 8pm to accommodate our client’s schedule. In order to reach their goals they must make the effort to prove they have made the mental commitment that it takes for that type of weight loss.

So those that “say” they want to improve their health and fitness start on a Monday and walk in a park, on the beach, on your treadmill or your gym’s treadmill. Wherever it is, make sure you’re walking at a brisk pace for 1 hr for 30 consecutive days and then see how you feel. One thing I know for sure you will have is a true understanding of commitment. Ever notice that foggy windows and kids’ fingers are never very far apart? Suddenly you see hearts and names and Once you have the commitment you can plug it into the sun and mice. Well, that’s because it’s fun to draw on anything you wish to achieve. First you must conceive it, glass. then believe it, and then achieve it through commitment! Now there is a way for school-age kids to make their art Advertorial • Perfit - See our ad on page 10 stick on glass. Glass frames, that is! Changes in weather won’t melt it away, your kids can use many different colors, and in the end, they’ll have a very inventive frame for a favorite photo. A HIDDEN GEM IN BROWARD HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED DANIA BEACH? As you may know, Dania Beach is one of the hidden gems of Broward County and although it’s technically home to Fort Lauderdale International Airport, it’s also home to many thriving small businesses. Located right off of Dania Beach Boulevard in the Winn Dixie plaza across from Dania Jai Alai, sits one of the city’s best kept secrets, Langano Juice and Coffee. Enter Langano and you’ll always be greeted with a smile from the proprietors as well as their regular customers. Start your day off with a cup of coffee and a fresh breakfast sandwich. My personal favorite is the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant but you can get sausage or ham as well on a bagel, roll, or even a wrap. They’re open Monday through Friday starting at 7am and you can even call in your order on your way to work and they’ll have your order ready when you are. Are you somebody that works outside of the office? Stop by for lunch and be productive with their free Wi-Fi while grabbing a fresh sandwich and smoothie. Enjoy homemade chicken, tuna, or crab salad, or your choice of Ham, Pastrami, Roast Beef or Turkey with or without cheese. Get it on a bagel, croissant, wrap, or Panini and add your favorite toppings from lettuce and tomato to black olives or spicy mustard. Everything is fresh and made to order so you won’t find pre-made sandwiches that are just slapped together and thrown in the microwave like you would find at your average fast food place in South Florida. Have you been looking for a place to get freshly squeezed vegetable juices or smoothies? You’ll find a huge variety here at Langano. The combinations of vegetable juices range from the Liver Cleanser to the Immune Booster are all freshly squeezed while you wait. You can also find fresh-made smoothies that are sure to please your palate. You can even find that elusive Wheatgrass shot you haven’t been able to find anywhere. Langano Juice and Coffee, 320 East Dania Beach Blvd, just minutes from Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Downtown Hollywood and the surrounding Beaches, is sure to please. Parking is never a problem in the Winn Dixie plaza so be sure to check out this hidden gem in Dania Beach. - Wolfgang Velasco Advertorial • Langano Juice & Coffee, see our ad on page 1

Doodle Glass Photo Frames

glimpse of themselves and their artsy doodles at the exact same time. Here’s the stuff: --Inexpensive plain glass frames with clips from discount stores --Nontoxic permanent black marker --Acrylic paints and paintbrushes, or nontoxic permanent paint pens --Construction paper --Photo Here’s the fun: 1. Unclip the glass frame and clean it. Figure out where you’d like to place the photo. Smack in the middle is fine. Sometimes off center looks great, or a slight tilt will give it a playful look. 2. Outline the photo’s position on the backside of the glass with the black permanent marker. Use either a ruler as a guide or make a free-form squiggle line. 3. Remove the photo and consider the space that’s left. Outline designs on the backside of the glass with the marker, then fill them in with paint pens or acrylic paints. Remember that the drawings will be in reverse when the glass frame is put back together, and any words will have to be written backward. The idea is to further illustrate the story the photo only begins to tell, about the event or your child’s interests at that time. For example, once my son framed a photo of himself triumphantly holding a big fish he’d just caught. He drew a lake, the sun and a fish jumping this way and that to show it had been a bright day and a big challenge to make that catch! Other ideas? If it’s a new baby, you might want to draw a bottle and bibs. If it’s spring-break memories, draw activities that represent the trip. 4. While their artwork is drying, have the kids choose a piece of colored paper on which to mount their photo. Affix the photo to the paper, place it against the glass, clip on the back of the frame, and you have a wonderful “picture story” to hang on the wall. Quick tip: It’s not a great idea for preschoolers to handle glass. Instead, have them do all their doodling directly on the paper, including the squiggle line frame shape. Then frame it and hang it. They’ll be totally thrilled! ***

In the early days of the cinema industry, the projection screens were embedded with real silver to enhance the reflective nature of the surface. • Greyhounds have better eyesight than any other breed of dog. • Worried about grocery prices going up? Hence the plant’s more common name, the corpse flower. *** Thought for the Day: “First there is a time when we believe everything, then for a little while we believe with discrimination, then we believe nothing whatever, and then we believe everything again -- and, moreover, give reasons why we believe.” -- Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
