TIDBITS® PICKS SOME

COTTON by Patricia L. Cook

If you look at the labels on the clothes you are wearing, at least some of your apparel is probably made from cotton. You may not realize the versatility of this plant. It is not only used as a fiber but also in food products, fertilizer, fuel and more. This week, Tidbits looks at this remarkable plant. • Cotton is a natural fiber whose history goes back thousands of years. Civilizations in India, China and Egypt grew cotton as well as the Mayans in Guatemala, Yucatan and other parts of Mexico. The oldest archaeological evidence of clothing made from cotton comes from the Indus Valley of today’s Pakistan. Cotton “bolls” that start in a field are used to produce much of the fabric in the world.

• For years, the “Cotton Row” district of Memphis, Tennessee, was the center of the worldwide cotton trade market. The Cotton Museum at the Cotton Exchange opened in 2006 in the building that was once the place where cotton was inspected, bought and sold, and shipped around the world. The museum has artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of cotton, its history and its impact on the region and the world. • Another museum dedicated to cotton is The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville, Texas. This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of America’s cotton industry. The museum includes the oldest house in Greenville and an actual cotton patch. • The states where cotton grows are sometimes referred to as the “Cotton Belt.” These states are all across the southern edge of the United States. They are Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The climate and soil conditions of these areas provide a great cotton-growing environment. • Are you curious as to what can be made from one bale of cotton? How about 4,321 socks, 3,085 diapers (yes, the old fashioned cotton kind!), 1,256 pillowcases, 690 bath towels, 409 skirts or 250 pairs of pants!

These jeans were given to the “Cotton. From Blue to Green.®” campaign for more housing insulation projects. What a terrific way to help people, recycle and keep blue jeans out of our landfills! • Cotton has been an important part of our lives for many years and will likely continue to be. As the advertisements say, it is the “fabric of our lives.” Cotton is now grown in 70 countries, with China producing the most at about 25 percent and the Unites States producing almost 20 percent. China and India are the largest producers of cotton, while the United States is the world’s largest exporter of cotton.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

CLEMENTINE HUNTER The granddaughter of slaves, Clementine Hunter was born in 1886 or 1887. She grew up in a time when she was offered very little education and no access to painting classes or supplies. • Hunter lived almost all of her life on Melrose Plantation, a beautiful cotton and pecan plantation over 200 years old, south of Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she worked as a cook. The plantation is now a National Historic Landmark. • The owner of the plantation in the 1930s, Mrs. Cammie Henry, was a promoter of the arts and encouraged artists to visit her home to write and paint. One of her frequent visitors was painter Alberta Kinsey, from New Orleans. She was there when a dear friend of Mrs. Henry’s, Mrs. Blythe White Rand, came for one of her many visits. Rand was an avid gardener and brought a bouquet of zinnias for her hostess. • On that day, in 1939, Kinsey started an oil painting of the zinnias in an old, hammered copper pitcher. Hunter saw her at work and commented that she might be able to paint. Kinsey stopped her work and gave Hunter the pitcher, flowers and some partially used tubes of oil paint and told her to give it a try. • When Rand returned to Melrose weeks later, Hunter presented her with a painting of the zinnias done on the side of a corrugated cardboard box, the only “canvas” she had. She had used all of the paints, making very thick brush strokes, making the zinnias come alive. This was the first documented “Clementine” painting. It is now owned by an anonymous collector. • Henry, Rand, Kinsey and others associated with Melrose realized the significance of Hunter’s self-taught art.

Scones Fit for a King Since my invitation to the royal wedding seems to have been misplaced, I’ve turned to one of my favorite English recipes for comfort. I dearly love scones, a small British quick bread of Scottish origin. Scones are often served around 4 p.m. -tea-time in the United Kingdom. The first mention of this popular treat was in 1513. The word “scone” may be a derivative of two Middle Dutch words: “schoon” (pure, clean) and “brood” (bread). The combination yields “schoonbrood,” meaning a fine white bread. Or, the word may be based on the Scottish town of Scone. The original scones were round, flat and about the size of a small plate. They were traditionally made out of unleavened

oats and baked on a griddle. Then, the scones were cut into triangles for serving. Today, some call the large, round cake a bannock and the triangle quadrants scones. Scones also are cut into circular shapes, similar to biscuits. No matter how you cut them, this recipe for English Scones is delicious and the perfect snack while watching the royal wedding ... on television! ENGLISH SCONES A gentle touch and cold ingredients are the secrets to flaky, tender scones. You’ll want to use heavy cream or buttermilk for this recipe rather than whole milk, as it adds a richness to the dough. 2 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling 1/2 teaspoon salt (table salt, not Kosher) 5 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes, plus more for greasing the baking pan, as needed 3 eggs 1/2 cup heavy cream or buttermilk, plus 3 tablespoons 1/2 cup raisins or dried currants 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut 5 tablespoons of the butter into the flour using a pastry cutter, two knives or the tips of your fingers, until the mixture resembles crumbs.

Assumed Annual Rate Of Investment Return: What The Pros Expect

While defined-benefit pension plans (i.e., those plans that provide a specific monthly retirement check from a formula based on years of service and average annual salary) have largely disappeared from the private sector, many public entities have continued to fund and maintain pensions. Because of faltering economic conditions and a perception of the disproportionate cost to taxpayers, these public pensions have become hot topics of discussion, particularly the cost of funding these plans.

In order to provide ongoing paychecks to a large group of retirees both now and in the future, pension plan operators must integrate a wide range of variables to determine how much money will be required for successful operation of the program. The Capital Grill, the swank West Hollywood steakhouse, was the site of a surprise party for the recently retired, top Hollywood publicist Esme Chandlee, who turned 93 that day. Former client Tom Selleck, shooting in New York City on CBS’ “Blue Bloods,” sent his actress-wife, Jillie Mack, to celebrate with her. Selleck said, “To learn what a publicist was from someone of her integrity and professionalism was a blessing.” Sam Elliott and wife Katharine Ross also are former clients. Sam was in Oregon visiting his 95-year-old mother, so Katharine came to celebrate Esme’s day. Elliott said of Esme, “She’s the most grounded source in an otherwise shaky field. She had the credentials and understood what worked for me, and at the same time for her.” Former clients Gena Rowlands and Vera Miles both sent flowers. “Burn Notice” executive producer/creator Matt Nix (Esme’s great nephew) and wife, Melinda, toasted her, as did Selleck’s manager, Bettye McCartt, and Hollywood publicist Ron Scott, also having a birthday. Facing a giant portrait of MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer, Esme recalled being summoned to his office, which meant she could be fired, because Colonel Parker demanded Elvis Presley be paid to do interviews at MGM. Mayer said, “If word gets out we paid him to do interviews, we’ll go bankrupt.” Esme told Mayer, “I told the Colonel the only way we could honor such a clause was if he never told anyone of the arrangement.” Mayer said, “I suppose you took his word for that!” Undaunted, she reached into her purse and produced a signed paper, which today we’d call a gag order. Mayer smiled and said, “Esme, as long as I’m here, you have a job!” There are no Esme Chandlees today ... just too many egotistical, inexperienced interns, promoted because of budget cuts, who don’t know what they’re doing!

*** Warren Beatty delivered a knockout punch to Tribune Media Services when a judge ruled he could retain the rights to “Dick Tracy.” Beatty starred and directed the l990 film with Al Pacino, Madonna and an all-star cast. Now Beatty has the rights to do the sequel he’s wanted to make for years. Gregory Peck, who won an Oscar for “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962), will be immortalized on a U.S. postage stamp. Sharon Stone will host the ceremony when the stamp drops on April 28. I remember when I waited at The WaldorfAstoria in New York City to shoot pix of Peck, but couldn’t get near him because he exited the building with President Richard Nixon and was surrounded by Secret Service men. Just my luck, Tricky Dick was a fan of Peck’s and talked his ear off!

The Blue Side of Green

Choosing a Family Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re visiting a breeder soon who is offering a new litter of puppies for sale. She says we should visit a few times to find the right puppy for our family. How do we choose the best of the litter? -- Kay S., Bowden, Ala.

One of the most important parts of living a greener life is blue - blue as in reducing our water consumption. As Americans, we all use too much water, a resource that affects us in Orangebrook Golf & Country Club located at 400 Entrada Dr. all aspects of our lives. From long showers to leaving the 8:00am shotgun start. For more information call Kathy water running while we wash dishes, we use a lot of fresh 954-967-4221 website address is www.diamondgolf.org water. The average household uses 30,000 to 40,000 gallons of water per year. As greener technology becomes more affordable, there are many ways to use less water, from List your events here for free. multi-flush setting toilet bowls to water flow restricting E-mail information to: faucets and showerhead, as you upgrade your home you can find a large number of water saving appliances to help publisher@tidbitsbroward.com. you conserve water. If you have no plans to upgrade your house anytime soon, don’t worry, there are several ways to conserve water. Here are a few tips to help.

DEAR KAY: I don’t think there’s always a “best” puppy in a litter. However, there is the right “fit” for your family. For example, outgoing pups may do best with a family, while shy dogs work better with individuals.

1. Catching the rain – Water barrels are great for watering your garden, but can be expensive to install and maintain. A self-installed water line run off your downspout to your garden made of flexible tubing with small holes drilled in it can be run to critical areas and hidden behind vegetation. With a little effort and a weekend project, you can send water where it is needed and greatly reduce your need to water your garden.

Because you will be spending quite a bit of money on a new dog, be observant during visits and ask questions. Make sure the puppies’ living area is clean and that they all look healthy, happy and relaxed. Hold and play with puppies that interest you and watch their behavior around your children. As the weeks pass, observe their growth and the maturation of motor skills and awareness.

2. Saving resources in the home – Not ready for a water reducing toilet bowl? A ½-gallon plastic bottle can make a big difference. Fill a milk or juice container with water and after flushing, (please flush first) place it in the reserve tank. You won’t notice a decrease in performance, but you will save ½ a gallon of water every time you use the restroom.

The breeder will be observing you during this time as well. After all, she doesn’t want to send well-bred puppies to owners who won’t care for them. It’s not unusual for professional breeders to refuse to sell a puppy to someone they have doubts about. Remember, the deal isn’t done until both sides agree that the dog you pick is the best fit for you, and the papers are signed.

Finally - Just make the use of water a conscious part of your day and teach your children the importance of conserving this precious resource. - Gerry Messina

The breeder is offering to let you visit several times to find the best fit, which is a great selection method (and one mark of a good breeder). Often, such visits are spaced over several weeks, from a couple weeks after the puppies’ birth to the time they are ready to leave (eight or more weeks).

Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Shingles Rash Gone, But Pain Lingers On DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve been trying to deal with shingles pain for six months. At times it’s so bad that I can’t sleep. I have tried Tylenol, Aleve and Advil, and some herbals that my wife bought. Nothing works. Can you tell me what will? How did I get it? Will the shingles vaccine take away the pain? -- R.M. ANSWER: Shingles comes from the awakened chickenpox virus that has been hibernating in nerve cells ever since the childhood infection. Even if you can’t remember having had chickenpox, odds are you did. More than 90 percent of adults -- in fact, close to 99 percent -- have evidence of a prior chickenpox infection in their blood. Once the shingles rash goes, pain continues to remain in a significant number of people. That’s not shingles. It’s called postherpetic neuralgia. When the chickenpox virus crept down nerves to your skin, it injured the nerves. That’s what causes lingering pain long after the shingles rash has disappeared. Plenty of medicines can quiet that pain. You have to experiment to find which works for you. Lyrica is a somewhat newer addition to these medicines. You need a prescription for it. Capsaicin cream, gel or lotion is found on the shelves of all drugstores. You apply it directly to the painful skin. Qutenza is a new preparation of capsaicin. It’s applied by your doctor or a health professional in a one-hour treatment, and is touted to provide three months of pain relief. The lidocaine patch is another skin-applied treatment that quiets pain. Amitriptyline and Cymbalta, both antidepressants, are oral medicines that can dull postherpetic pain. Opioids like tramadol and oxycodone can be turned to when others fail. And this is just an abbreviated inventory of treatments. The shingles vaccine doesn’t do a thing for postherpetic neuralgia; it cuts the chances of developing shingles in half. And if a vaccinated person does develop shingles, it lessens the chances of postherpetic neuralgia. It’s recommended for everyone 60 and older. The shingles pamphlet explores this common illness in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Refrigerator Runs Hot and Cold

HOME TIP: The optimum air temperature of your refrigerator is 38 F. This keeps foods at a safe temperature without freezing them.

ALL THE ANSWERS!!!!

a huge value most would agree, but a pittance in comparison to what the schools receive, and hence, the street-corner references. The NCAA doesn’t like the analogy. “We get nasty communication pretty frequently,” NCAA Mike Emmert said in a defensive response to the comments. He dismisses the profit-sharing model. “[Students] are not employees, they’re students,” Emmert said. And, for some schools, the revenues don’t necessarily generate a surplus. Using Maryland again as an example -- a university that actively competes in most sports the NCAA It wouldn’t be the first time I’d have quoted him (or any offers -- its net surplus on the year came to a little more than other coach for that matter) in, shall we say, a relaxed $45,000. manner.

The conclusion for now? Taking a cue from my chat with But the chat I had that day with University of Maryland Williams, maybe it’s time for all of us -- including the NCAA, head coach Gary Williams about the challenge the Terrapins with its overly restrictive rules on student compensation -stared into every year, faced with the considerable challenges to relax a bit. presented by Duke, the University of North Carolina and any of the other fine Atlantic Coast Conference teams, made Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Kansas City Luminary. an impression. As if the contention on the court wasn’t enough, the real fighting took place in living rooms all across the country when Williams vied against Coach K and Dean Smith (at the time) for top-notch recruits. But as Williams dragged the Terps off of the NCAA’s death row -- no TV, no tournament in the wake of Len Bias’ death -- and turned them into perennial contenders before finally punching through to the championship in 2002 -- he also was criticized for his team’s academic and graduating status. In short, the record wasn’t very flattering. The Terps ranked toward the bottom of the ACC in terms of graduation and grade-point average. But after Joe Smith bolted from the school after his sophomore year and Steve Francis flew the coop following his freshman year, local media started to put the press on Williams. Williams’ explanation went a little something like this: Hey, basketball was their education. For some people, like ESPN.com’s Tim Keown, that’s not a good enough answer. “The NCAA should stop prostituting itself for the sake of the one-and-done players and release itself from the NBA’s rule against players heading to the NBA or the D-League out of high school,” Keown wrote. “The players are the indentured servants -- and no, don’t tell me a scholarship is adequate payment for the revenues received by the universities and the NCAA ... the NBA doesn’t have to pay to train its workforce, and the NCAA is fine with that.” Filmmaker Spike Lee takes the analogies a bit further -- and in less column space. “The NC-two-A are the biggest pimps around,” Lee said in a recent town hall on racial issues in sports. “They are pimping athletes.” Advocates of paying players for their time point to the NBA and NFL’s profit sharing model (they receive 57 percent and 58 percent, respectively). Under such a plan, players in larger programs like Texas would receive upward of $700,000 each season. But they don’t -- they get free tuition,
