• If you were to add up the amount of separate pieces of paper trash that each American throws away per year, it would be approximately 13,000 pieces of paper. A large percentage of this is packaging and junk mail.

A Bed for Any Budget

• An amazing fact: If you were to lay out all the paper that American businesses generate in just one day, that paper would be enough to circle the Earth about 20 times. • When a glass bottle is recycled, the process considerably cuts back on the air and water pollution that occurs when you create the bottle from raw materials.

• Recycle your newspapers whenever you can. Each year, 10 million tons (9.1 million kg) of newspaper are not recycled, but thrown away in landfills. If we changed this habit altogether, we could save up to 75 million trees.

ENVIRONMENT DAY(continued): • Although pollutant levels in the early 1900s were two to five times higher than current levels, forests in the Pacific Northwest are dying twice as fast as they were 17 years ago, and scientists blame warming temperatures, according to a new study. • If you drink a can of beer after work and then toss it in the recycling bin, that one (aluminum) can saves enough energy to watch television for three hours after dinner. Of course, you’d save even more energy if you went out for a walk or read a good used book after dinner. Think of the paper and trees saved. • Yes, we can: There are over 80 billion soda cans used each year. Yes, that’s billion. And that’s just soda. Now, can you see the importance of recycling aluminum?

• For every 1 percent decrease in the Earth’s ozone layer, there is a 2 percent increase in the incidence of skin cancer in humans. • Public transportation produces 95 percent less carbon monoxide (CO), 90 percent less volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and about half as much carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx), per passenger mile as private vehicles. Energy-related car-bon dioxide emissions represent about 82 percent of the total U.S. human-made green-house emissions. • Forty-nine percent of America’s electricity comes from burning coal. Sixty three percent of fossil fuel electricity comes from burning coal, 29 percent from burning natural gas and 9 percent from burning oil.

• It takes approximately 394 pounds (179 kg) of coal to keep a single 100-watt incandescent light bulb burning for 12 hours each day for one year. • Currently, conventional incandescent lamps are in the process of being replaced with more energy-efficient lamps. Fluorescent light has been used for many years in overhead fluorescent tubes without causing any problems. Nevertheless, certain “light sensitive” citizens’ associations have voiced concerns about compact fluorescent lamps. • Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons (19 liters) of water saved. The less time your shower takes, the lower your impact on the environment. • Lighters are usually considered disposable so they will most likely end up in land fills. You can use the cardboard matches that are more eco-friendly because they are made of recyclable material.

• If laundromats in the United States switched to frontloading machines, we could save a whole lot of water. If just one load of wash per day was washed by a front loader rather than a top-loading machine, we’d save 1 million gallons (3.8 million liters) of water a day. • America’s refrigerators use about 7 percent of the nation’s total electricity consumption, the output of about 25 large power plants.

MUSIC LEGEND:

MEMORIAL DAY

Fittingly, one of America’s great jazzmen, Louis Armstrong, was born on July 4, 1900. He came from extreme poverty and became one of the most well known performers in the world. This week, Tidbits blows its horn in honor of the great Louis “Pops” Armstrong. • Louis Armstrong was born in the slums of segregated New Orleans, became a juvenile delinquent, then was relegated to the Colored Waifs’ Home for Boys. That’s where he was introduced to the cornet and began a lifelong commitment to jazz music. • Armstrong had many hit records including “What a Wonderful World,” “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Hello Dolly.” • Armstrong formed his first band at age 14 and worked around New Orleans until 1923, when he went to Chicago. That’s where he made his first recordings with the King Oliver band in Richmond, Indiana. • With his trumpet he could reach F above high C with ease, a feat unheard of in the 1920s, as were his legatos, coupled with his pure tone, continuity of phrasing and sophisticated improvisations. • He was nicknamed Satchelmouth, for obvious physiological reasons, by an editor of the “London Melody Maker,” a music newspaper. It was shortened to Satchmo for convenience. He was also called Pops by those who loved him. • Louis’ career was constantly upwardly mobile. In New York he worked The Savoy and The Cotton Clubs and did a Broadway revue, Hot Chocolates, which brought him to the attention of white audiences. He recorded “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” one of his 1st big records. • In 1930 he went to Los Angeles to work Frank Sebastian’s Cotton Club. The same year, he cut the first of many records with Lionel Hampton, “Memories of You.”

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those who have died serving our country. Tidbits salutes the men and women of our armed forces who fought and who sacrificed their lives so that we could be free. • Memorial Day has a long history. It began as a commemoration for those soldiers who died during the Civil War. • Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic, established Decoration Day (later changed to Memorial Day) as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. He declared the day should be ob-served on May 30 because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. • Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868. During the first national celebration. General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which around 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there. • This first “official” celebration in 1868 was inspired by observances in several towns throughout America that had been going on since the end of the Civil War. Several Northern and Southern cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, but in 1966, the federal government declared Waterloo, N.Y., its official birthplace. Waterloo was chosen because it had made celebration of the day an annual event that involved the entire community. • The South refused to honor the dead on Memorial Day until after World War I when the meaning of Memorial Day changed from honoring Civil War dead to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

• In 1943, Armstrong won the first Esquire magazine jazz poll in the trumpet and vocal categories. In January 1944, Esquire held its first jazz concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, starring Louis, of course. He won their poll again in 1945, 1946 and 1947. • Armstrong made his first record with Ella Fitzgerald in 1947. At the same time, his agent and longtime friend Joe Glaser suggested forming the Louis Armstrong and His All Stars Band, which reached for and brought new highs to musicians and music lovers.

• In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day.

• Armstrong was accepted by royalty. He was honored by U.S. presidents and foreign heads of state. He was received by the Pope. • According to record historians, Armstrong recorded 1,500 plus records between 1923 and 1970.

• The first state to officially recognize Memorial Day was New York. • How is the 3rd U.S. Infantry associated with Memorial Day? Since the late 1950s on the Thursday just before Memorial Day, around 1,200 soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing.

• In 1964, Armstrong knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts with “Hello Dolly,” which gave the 63-year-old a U.S. record as the oldest artist to have a No. 1 song. • Louis was an internationally traveled, musical goodwill ambassador. He toured officially for the State Department, although there were parts of Africa he refused to visit because of their apartheid policy.

By: Gerry Messina Going green is a term we hear all the time, it is in advertisements, articles, and the news and all over the web, but what does it mean to have a lower environmental impact? There are levels of greener that you can go, but every person can make an impact by making small changes to their day to day lives that can greatly lower their footprint on the environment. Going green is easier than you might think. We all know the basic rules, recycle as much as you can, turn off fans and lights when you leave a room, shut down your computer, turn off the television before you fall asleep, and raise your thermostat, yet there is so much more you can do to help the environment. I hope the following tips help you live a greener life. Hot water heaters: Hot water heaters running all day and night waste a lot of energy, whether they are gas or electric. Upgrading to a unit or units with no tank will save you money, but the initial investment is high. If you do not have the budget for the new technology or do not trust it, have an electrician install a light switch on the line so you can turn off your current heater when you do not need it. Not only will it save you money on the new hot water heater, by turning off the heater you will lower your monthly bills. Toilets: The average flap on a toilet, the rubber plug that lifts when you flush the toilet is designed to last approximately four to five years. Don’t wait for your toilet to start running before you change the flap. It takes less than ten minutes to change the flapper and costs fewer than five dollars. Replace the flapper every four years and save water. While you have the tank lid off, examine the entire unit, over time the unit loosens and you can be wasting water without realizing it. A screw driver and a few minutes can save on your water bill.

Train a Cat? It’s Possible DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you train a cat? -- Janice in Wheeling, W.Va. DEAR JANICE: Sure, although I’m of the opinion that most cats train you. Seriously -- they learn, pretty early on, what “buttons” to push to get you to give them food or treats, let them out, pet them or stop typing a pet column and pay attention to him or her. But you can have the last laugh and train your cat to respond to commands or signals. Remember that cats are very different than dogs in their approach to the world and in how they respond. In fact, you’ll want to somewhat mimic the way that your cat learns to train you: They observe you quietly, then test a few different methods of getting what they want and adopt the most successful one. It’s also important to note that cats don’t respond well to negative reinforcement. You can shake a can of pennies at them or hiss or yell “no!” when a cat is doing something you don’t want it to do, and that might work in the short term, but mostly their response is to run away. If you’re training a cat to specifically do something on command, you need to use positive reinforcement almost exclusively. This is rewarding the cat with a treat, a stroke or a kind word immediately after it responds to the movement you’re trying to teach. The cat needs to develop a positive association with the activity. Keep training sessions short and somewhat spontaneous. Most cats don’t last more than five or 10 minutes per session. And don’t get discouraged if your cat doesn’t “get” it after days or weeks. Instead, be patient and look for new ways to make the connection with your cat. Shedding Light on Tanning DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently, my daughter attended a sweet-16 birthday party for one of her best friends. She is a beautiful girl. When my daughter showed me pictures of her friend, I was shocked. Her face and arms were deeply tanned. I have no idea how many hours she must have spent under a tanning machine. I am very concerned about her. Would you write about the dangers of tanning? -- Anon. ANSWER: Ultraviolet light, the kind of light we don’t see, has powerful effects on the skin. Ultraviolet A rays constitute 95 percent of the UV light that makes its way to earth. UV A rays do not burn and tan skin as much as UV B rays, but they do damage skin. They cause skin wrinkling; they dry skin; and they produce age spots (liver spots). And they also add to the risk of skin cancer. Ultraviolet B rays are more destructive. They are the burning rays, and they have a greater effect on skin cancer production. Both A and B reduce the skin’s innate immunity. Exposure to both UV A and UV B injures the skin cells’ DNA, and that’s what sets the scene for future skin cancer. Humans have learned to cope with UV light by tanning. A tan offers some protection against further damage. UV light activates melanocytes, and they pass their melanin -- a dark pigment -- to other skin cells. That has the effect of providing an umbrella for the skin. However beneficial that might be, the fact remains that in obtaining a modicum of protection with a tan, skin-cell DNA has been dealt a major blow. No tan can be considered healthy. Sun exposure in adolescence might be the most dangerous time for ultraviolet damage. Tanning booths and tanning beds are considered a threat equal to the sun for promoting future skin cancer. People of all ages should protect their skin from exposure to UV light. Such exposure happens every time a person goes outdoors. Cloud cover is a poor absorber of UV rays and offers little skin protection. Sunscreen application should become a habit. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What’s considered ideal poolwater temperature? In our apartment complex, we have a large pool that is so cold I rarely use it. I am getting a thermometer to measure its temperature. I would like to have a reference temperature to present to management if the water is colder than it should be. -- N.U. ANSWER: Pool water is comfortable for most when its temperature is between 82 and 86 degrees F (28-30 C). The water is cool enough to keep strong swimmers from overheating, but warm enough to keep floaters from freezing. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What’s the purpose of ear wax? I seem to produce tons of it. I can’t find an answer to this question, so I thought I would write to you. -- C.N. ANSWER: Ear wax keeps the ear canal moist. Without it, the canal’s lining dries up and itches. It also traps foreign debris, including bacteria, viruses and fungi that find their way into the ear canal. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
