• Probably the most feared shark and frequently called a “man-eater,” the great white shark actually prefers a dinner of sea lion rather than human prey. The species’ Latin name Carchardon Carcharias, translates “jagged teeth,” and indeed, this shark has about 3,000 teeth, all arranged in several rows. They find their prey very easily due to their extreme sensitivity to the electrical field surrounding living

creatures, perceiving half a billionth of a volt. They’re found in every major ocean, and have a life span of more than 30 years. How likely are you to experience an unprovoked attack by a shark? You’re more likely to die from a lightning strike. • Due to the publicity generated by the death of adventurer Steve Irwin, lots of folks believe that the manta ray can kill a human. Irwin’s chest was pierced by a stingray, not a manta. The manta is the largest of all rays, up to 25 feet (7.6 m) across, weighing as much as 5,100 pounds (2,300 kg). While its tail is similar to that of a stingray, it does not have a stinger and is harmless to swimmers.

UNDER THE SEA (continued): • The squid, snail, octopus and clam are all examples of mollusks, soft-bodied creatures with no internal skeleton. Some mollusks have a hard outer-shell; some do not. More than 85,000 species of mollusks have been identified, and most probably there are many more that have not yet been discovered. • The common squid can be found in all of the oceans of the world. Most are about 24 inches (60 cm) long, but the giant squid reaches lengths of 43 feet (13 m). In 2003, an even larger species was discovered, the colossal squid, which may grow to 46 feet (14 m). When in danger, the squid emits a cloud of ink from a sac to confuse its predators. This mollusk has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom; in fact, the colossal squid’s eyes have a diameter of about 11 inches (28 cm). • Certain octopuses have a life span of only six months. Even the longer-living species only live about four years. Reproduction takes its toll on this sea creature, with males surviving only a few months after mating and females dying within a short time after their eggs hatch. An octopus, like the squid, is a cephalopod, which translates to “head to foot” because its appendages are attached to its head. Also like the squid, the octopus ejects a cloud of dark ink when threatened by predators. The ink is colored by melanin, the same compound that gives humans our hair color. Not only can the octopus eject ink for protection, it can instantly camouflage itself, changing the color of its skin to match its environment.

• “Benthic marine algae” is a fancy name used by scientists for seaweed. Seaweed is used for everything from food to medicine to fertilizer. People in some Asian countries consider some varieties a great delicacy and receive health benefits from its rich deposits of calcium, magnesium and iodine. Folks in Belize mix it with milk, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla for a popular beverage. Germans add seaweed’s compounds to many of their beers. You’ll find it in cosmetics, wound dressings, toothpaste and diet pills. Exclusive spas offer seafood wraps for the body. At the hardware store, seaweed is present in paints and fertilizers.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS;
DAVE DRAVECKY Little boys dream of playing in the big leagues, as did Dave Dravecky, who pitched his first no-hitter as a teen. After attaining his dream, tragedy struck. Yet this inspirational man picked himself up and has gone on to help those plagued by disease. Hats off to this courageous gentleman! • Ohio-born Dravecky was 26 years old when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1982. The left-handed pitcher won 14 games in his second season and represented the Padres in 1983’s All-Star game. The next year, he contributed to the Padres’ first-ever pennant. • In 1987, the San Francisco Giants acquired Dravecky, who was at the peak of his career. On the 1988 season’s opening day, he pitched a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. Late that season, a desmoid tumor, a rare type of cancer that develops in the tissue that forms tendons and ligaments, was discovered in his pitching arm. Dravecky underwent surgery that October, and half of the deltoid muscle (the one that forms the rounded contour of the shoulder) was removed. In addition, the long humerus bone in his arm was frozen in an attempt to eradicate all cancerous cells. • Dravecky’s circumstance might have been a career ender for a lesser man. His doctors told him, “Short of a miracle, you’ll never pitch again.” But he was determined to make a comeback, and defying all odds, the following July, he was pitching in the minors. The next month, August of 1989, a miracle happened, and Dravecky was back on the mound for the Giants in an amazing comeback game against the Cincinnati Reds at Candlestick Park. He pitched eight innings and the Giants defeated the Reds 4-3. • Five days later, Dravecky was in Montreal, up against the Expos. He started off the game with three no-hit innings, another incredible deed. In the sixth inning, he allowed a home run on the first batter, and hit the second batter. With the third batter came what has been called “the pitch that

could be heard around the world.” Dravecky’s humerus bone broke in two, and in his words, “You could hear the popping noise of my arm breaking all over the stadium. I never felt that kind of pain in my life. It felt like my arm was coming off.” In the post-season playoffs, the Giants won the National League pennant, and as the ecstatic team piled onto each other, his arm was broken again. • As doctors X-rayed the broken arm, a mass was discovered, and it was confirmed that the cancer was back. Eighteen days later, Dravecky announced his retirement and entered a new phase of his life. In 1990, he published a book “Comeback,” which detailed his battles with cancer and his remarkable return to baseball. What he thought was his recovery continued, with surgeries and radiation, yet his arm was actually deteriorating. In June of 1991, his arm, shoulder blade, and left side of his collar bone were amputated in an attempt to save his life. • Dravecky’s second book, published in 1992 was entitled “When You Can’t Come Back.” He has gone on to become a highly sought-after motivational speaker. Along with his wife Jan, he has also founded a non-profit organization, Endurance, to support those affected by cancer.

Bed-Wetting Deeply Affects Children DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our grandson soon will be 15. He still wets the bed. His parents have done everything from pills to alarms, but nothing helps. Sometimes he gets depressed, and that scares us. He says he will never be able to have a relationship with a girl. Sometimes we worry that he will hurt himself. Is there anything that can help this

ANSWER: I feel deeply for your grandson. No one can understand the isolation and hopelessness he has to grapple with. He could stand professional counseling. Perhaps a few facts will help him. Between the ages of 5 and 6, 15 percent to 20 percent of children are still wetting the bed. Of that number, every following year, 15 percent will stay dry during the night. By age 18, only 1 percent to 2 percent of these youngsters are still battling the problem. Your grandson has three years in which his chances of gaining control are good. The problem of bed-wetting appears to stem from a brain that doesn’t respond to a full nighttime bladder by rousing the sleeper. It might be a delay in developing that response. Or it might be a delay in the attainment of a large enough bladder capacity to hold nighttime urine production. Or it might be that these children produce too little of the hormone vasopressin, which suppresses nightly urine formation. Your grandson can once more try things he probably has already tried. He should measure carefully how much fluid he drinks in one day. Once he learns that number, he should drink 40 percent of the total in the morning, another 40 percent in the afternoon and limit fluid to 20 percent of the daily total from 5 p.m. on. He can increase his bladder’s capacity by holding off on urinating during the day. If he delays each time by five or 10 minutes for one week and then gradually lengthens the delay in following weeks, the bladder will stretch. This takes time. He has to be patient. Alarms can work. They sound or vibrate when the first few drops of moisture touch them. It can be as long as six months of use before the training takes hold. For occasions when he is invited to stay at other people’s
homes for the night, desmopressin, as a pill or nasal spray, slows nighttime urine production. ***
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am so concerned about our grandson. He is a senior in college. He felt he couldn’t focus well enough on some of his difficult classes. He went to a doctor and was put on Adderall. I am so worried that he will become addicted. Should I be concerned? -- R.G.
ANSWER: Adderall is a drug of the amphetamine family. It does have the potential of leading to dependence. However, it’s been used for so many years for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder that it can be well managed and not present a danger.
The doctor who prescribed the drug is responsible for monitoring how it is used. He or she will continue writing for its use only if it’s safe to do so.
I sincerely believe you do not have to worry yourself about your grandson. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Thermostat Wars Q: I’m having kind of a battle with my mother-in-law. She insists on dialing the thermostat all the way down to the left (50 degrees F.) in the morning, saying that “this will cool down the house faster.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this stress out the air conditioner? Is there a better way to cool down the house? How can I convince her of it? -- Jerry in Little Rock, Ark.
A: It’s definitely not the most efficient way to cool a house, although I’m not sure if my advice will help convince your mother-in-law. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink, one adage goes. Still, it’s worth a try, as this kind of extreme thermostat exercise costs money in terms of the power used to generate all that cool air. Many people try to save money by turning the air conditioning unit completely off after the sun goes down. This can work, but as your mother-in-law has found out, once the summer sun comes up, the house takes longer to cool down. Dropping the thermostat temperature selector 20 degrees does not make this process any faster. A more efficient way to keep the house at a comfortable temperature would be to raise the thermostat just four to six degrees at night (or when she’s out of the house for a long time during the day). In the morning, or when she returns from work or her shopping trip, she should then set the thermostat back down to the daytime temperature that is most comfortable for her.
An even better way -- especially if she just keeps cranking that old analog thermostat down -- would be to install a digital thermostat. These can be installed in the same spot as the old analog thermostat, usually with the same wiring. The advantage of the digital thermostat is twofold: First, it can be set at exactly the temperature she wants. Second, it can be programmed to automatically raise or lower the temperature at the times you specify. So, if she wants the house to be warmer at night, the digital thermostat can be programmed to raise the temperature until a set time ... say, For every person who thinks they know it all when it comes 6 a.m., when it will lower the temperature to her preferred to the world of sports, you can rest assured that there are daytime levels. plenty of others who could: 1) care less, or 2) care about the stuff most of the know-it-all’s could care less about. I’m not sure if the Village Voice still runs the column, but To improve cooling for years readers of the famed Greenwich Village alternative efficiency and energy weekly could read “uni-watch” -- a diatribe or dictation of uniforms and who wore them from the world of sports. (A consumption, inspect big hit was the New York Ranger’s decision to sport the your home’s insulation Statue of Liberty and lace-up jerseys ... and, of course, and replace any that’s pinstripes were always the fashion.)

Andrew Postman, in his seminal “Sports Know It All,” posits the “40 things worth knowing about sports, late night, in a bar.” Among my favorites: When the Indianapolis 500 began, two people rode in the car -- a driver and the mechanic. (Also, relief drivers were common.)
In tennis, if the server hits either of his opponents during a doubles match on the fly, the serving team wins the point. (Why nobody uses this as a tactic, I’ll never know.) There is a World Elephant Polo Association, based out of Chitwan, Nepal. (Naturally.)
If a greyhound catches the mechanical rabbit, it’s considered a “no race” (and mechanical difficulty is usually the culprit.)
Former Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant, famous for the ignominious distinction of having led his team to four losing efforts in the Super Bowl, was once a big winner: He played for the championship 1949-50 Minneapolis Lakers. Think today’s baseball games are long? Foul balls weren’t counted as strikes until 1901 in the National League and 1903 in the American League. (The exceptions were a foul bunt or foul tips.)
The maximum number of golf clubs you’re allowed to carry during a golf match is 14. (Particularly if you’re playing by the strict English rules, Goldfinger.)
During the prohibition-era Los Angeles Olympics of 1932, the French team was granted special permission to drink wine on the grounds that it was “an essential part to their diet.” (And, of course, a good source of anti-oxidants if taken in moderation.) The first televised sporting event was a college baseball game in Japan, circa 1931.
The original suggested name for basketball? “Naismith Ball,” so named after the game’s alleged inventor.
And lastly, not one of the top-40 picks but an interesting piece of trivia nonetheless. All thoroughbred horses in the world today are descendants of at least one of three stallions: Darley Arabian, Byerly Turk and Godolphin Barb. Take this knowledge and go forth among the masses of stat geeks, content in the knowledge that now you too ... probably have too much time on your hands. until we add the sauces and dressings in preparation. But, we can make some adaptations to our home-prepared dressings, so they taste terrific and contain less oil-and fewer calories. The trick to making low-calorie dressings is to substitute pectin (yes the kind we make jams and jellies with) for part or all of the oil. The pectin thickens the mixture to look and pour like dressings.
Plant a Salad Bar Gardens and salads go together! You don’t have to have a large yard space to plant a salad garden. Short rows or even large patio containers of your favorite salad ingredients will add variety to your plate. While some of the first produce from spring gardens are greens like spinach and lettuce, our gardens can be our salad bar throughout the growing season. As you plan to plant your garden, plant the vegetables you’ll need as ingredients. Here is a list for starters: Cabbage; Sweet peppers (red and green); Green Onions; Carrots; Beans (Green and Wax); Fresh Dill; Spinach; Lettuce; Tomatoes; Green Peas; Broccoli; Fresh Herbs. With these few ingredients from your garden, some salads you could prepare include: Copper Pennies (marinated carrots); Slaw; Three-Bean Salad; Spinach Salad; Layered Lettuce; Marinated Vegetables; and Carrot-Raisin Salad. Add your favorite to the list. Fresh vegetables provide fiber to our diets along with ample vitamins A and C. They generally are low-calorie
To adapt your homemade salad dressing recipe, follow these easy steps. 1. Replace all or part of the oil in the recipe with vegetable broth or water. It’s your call on the amount. 2. Figure the total amount of liquid in your recipe. Add up the amount of water, vinegar, syrup, juice, etc. 3. For every 1 1/2 cups liquid, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of dry pectin (depends on thickness desired). 4. Allow your mixture to refrigerate several hours to thicken. You can put it on the salad as your recipe directs or store in a shakable container. Some dressings on salads are great on other types of salads too!

• On June 30, 1859, Jean-Francois Gravelet, a Frenchman known professionally as Emile Blondin, becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wearing pink tights and a yellow tunic, Blondin crossed a cable about 2 inches in diameter and 1,100-feet long with only a balancing pole to protect him from plunging into the dangerous rapids 160 feet below. • On June 28, 1862, Confederate raiders make a daring capture of a commercial vessel on Chesapeake Bay. Conspirators boarded the St. Nicholas as paying passengers with Richard Thomas Zarvona, a former student at West Point, disguised as a flirtatious Frenchwoman. • On July 3, 1908, author Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher is born in Albion, Mich. In 1937, her first book, “Serve It Forth,” was published. She produced nine more books on food, including “How to Cook a Wolf” (1942) and “The Gastronomic Me” (1943). • On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third no-hit game of his career to lead the Indians over the Detroit Tigers 2-1. This made him the first modern pitcher ever to throw three no-hitters. • On June 29, 1967, blond-bombshell actress Jayne Mansfield is killed instantly when the car in which she is riding strikes the rear of a trailer truck on I-90 east of New Orleans. THE SANDWICH
LC Auto Finish
Brought to you by: John’s Hero King Since the average American eats 193 sandwiches every year, about 300 million nationwide every day, it’s certainly worth taking a look at this lunchtime staple. • British statesman John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a diehard poker fan. Back in 1762, during lengthy gambling sessions, he asked his cook to bring him food that wouldn’t interrupt his game and would enable him to hold on to his cards. Slices of roast beef were placed between two pieces of toast and the “sandwich” was born! Montagu was also the namesake for the Sandwich Islands, now known as the Hawaiian Islands. When British Captain Cook became the first European to see Hawaii, he named them after Montagu who had been the sponsor of his voyage and was the First Lord of the Admiralty.

• On an ordinary day during the Great Depression, the butcher shop delivered beef rather than hot dogs to Pat Olivieri’s Philadelphia hot dog street cart. Olivieri used the beef for his own lunch by slicing it thin and grilling some onions along with it, then put it on one of his hot dog buns. When a passing cab driver smelled it, he ordered one and before long, most of Philly’s cab drivers were stopping by. In the years following, Olivieri added cheese, and the famous Philly Cheese Steak was officially invented. • Thanks to John Harvey Kellogg of cereal fame, the average child will consume 1,500 peanut butter sandwiches by the time high school graduation is reached. Kellogg was the first person to obtain a patent for the process of making peanut butter. Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich was peanut butter and banana. • A bunch of bologna? According to Kraft Foods, about 2.19 billion Oscar Mayer bologna sandwiches are eaten every year. Do the math — that’s 69 sandwiches every single second. • A 17-year-old Connecticut youth hoping to become a medical doctor changed the way we eat sandwiches in 1965. Fred DeLuca was trying to figure out how to pay for his education when a family friend loaned him $1,000 to go into partnership in a submarine sandwich shop. Bridgeport, Connecticut, was the site of the first Subway in August of that year. Today there are more than 34,000 Subways around the globe, and DeLuca is on Forbes magazine’s list of the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth of about $1.8 billion. • No matter what you call it — submarine, hoagie, poor boy, torpedo, hero or grinder — it’s all the

same. It’s a sandwich on a long oblong roll stacked with meats and cheeses. During World War II, Benedetto Capaldo’s New London, Connecticut, deli received a call from the U.S. Navy’s Groton submarine base for 500 hero sandwiches. It was the first of many orders, and the employees began calling the sandwiches “subs” because of where they were headed. During World War I, Italian workers at a Philadelphia shipyard named Hog Island brought large cold cut sandwiches with them to work. The workers were nicknamed “hoggies,” and soon the name of their lunch was modified to hoagie. It’s a Poor Boy in St. Louis and a Po’ Boy in New Orleans.

What happened to “Human Target”? It just disappeared from TV. -Carol S., via e-mail
A: You can bet those scenes were absolute torture to film. I spoke with Brigid Brannagh, who plays Pamela on the hit series, and she gave me the scoop: “We were all like, ‘Make this episode stop.’ It was so upsetting. And I’ve been to enough funerals where ‘Taps’ was played, and just hearing that song evokes so many things. It’s impossible not to feel completely consumed with melancholy when ‘Taps’ comes on. We’ve met all these soldiers, heard stories and met people who have lost soldiers,” she said. “We’ve been so surrounded by this world, by this military Army life for all of these years, that you just think about a soldier that you love gone, and he’s just a boy. It tore all of us up. Watching Terry Serpico (who plays Jeremy’s father) walk in and trying not to cry -- oh my God, it was terrible. It was just heart wrenching all the time. But we all really appreciated what it was. It was just a long day shoot.”

Beware of Business Credit Cards The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act of 2009 was supposed to protect consumers from changing interest rates, unreasonable fees and the insecurity from not knowing from one month to the next what new fees and penalties the credit-card companies would come up with. The Pew Charitable Trusts, a branch of the nonpartisan, civic-minded Pew Research Center, has released a Safe Credit Cards Project report warning about the ways credit-card companies are getting around the rules. To get around the restrictions of the CARD Act, credit-card companies have simply changed the name of the cards they’re issuing. They’re now called “business” or “corporate” credit cards. Business credit cards were never intended to be covered by the act, so none of the new rules apply. Far too many consumers have been taken in, assuming they’re protected when they’re not. Getting one of these cards isn’t hard: Business or commercial cards are being promoted not only to businesses and corporations, but to consumers, just as the regular consumer cards were. According to the Pew report, some 10 million offers for business credit cards are sent out every month. Here are some comparisons, with “Protected” indicating the coverage of personal credit cards under the Act. Protected: Terms cannot change during the first year, and 45 days notice must be given before terms change. Business: Terms can change at any time. Protected: Penalty interest rates cannot be applied to existing balances. Business: Penalty interest rates can be applied at any time, effective immediately, with no notice, to any balance. Protected: Penalty fees must be reasonable, and cannot exceed the violation itself. Business: Penalty fees are unrestricted. Protected: Payments over the minimum must be applied to the highest rate balance first. Business: Payment may be applied to lowest rate balances, which lets high-rate balances accrue interest. If you receive a mailing or application offering one of these credit cards, read the fine print -- twice. Go online a pull up a copy of the CARD Act and compare item for item what your new card would offer versus the protections of regular cards. Remember: With business credit cards, your interest rate could change overnight, and you can’t do a thing about it -- except pay the debt. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, I left being advised not to do anything to my skin until the following morning, and I awoke with skin that was definitely smoother and less irritated than the day before. ORGANICA Wax & Beauty Studio offers a wide range of other services at economical prices, including Hair Color for $40. Aside from skin and hair care, the spa’s other specialty is hair removal, and the spa’s Full Brazilian Bikini Wax comes in at a very reasonable $30 and a complete Facial Hair Removal for just $20. Anna Fedorov, co-owner of the spa, assured me that it’s not as trauma inducing as it sounds.
I came in for a full hour of the European Organic Facial, the spa’s most popular skin treatment and even includes a shoulder and arm massage, which at $49 is actually half the price of what some highend Miami spas charge for a facial.
“There is no such thing as painless, but it’s as painless as it can be.”
My specialist Anna quickly diagnosed my skin as sensitive and seriously dehydrated. She started with a gentle cleansing, steaming and one of the most painless pore
I’ll take her word on that one but for now I’m definitely booking my next facial next month. Maintenance is the key, for a healthy and younger skin.
