THE MAMMOTH • In 1853, a hunter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California stumbled upon the largest trees on Earth, a previously unknown species now called sequoia. Gold miners who came to see the spectacle decided to cut the biggest of the big trees down. It took them three weeks to cut through the bottom of the 300-foot (91 m) tall tree, but on June 27, 1853, it fell.

• The tree, dubbed The Mammoth, was revealed to be 1,244 years old. The stump measured 93 feet (28 m) wide. It was turned into a dance floor. A bowling alley was built inside the log. A hotel erected nearby brought in tourists, who attended concerts, lectures, picnics, and weddings on top of the stump. A cross-section of the tree was sent to the World’s Fair in London. • Logging companies planned to cut down more sequoias, but public outcry over the death of one of the world’s largest trees resulted in the formation of the nation’s first national park, Yosemite. Today the stump of the Mammoth Tree still remains, located in Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

• The tree was considered sacred; to damage it was taboo. Camels were not allowed to eat its leaves. Travelers did not cut it down to heat their tea.

(continued):

an ancient tree during the time of Jesus Christ. It was already old when Colosseum was being constructed. • In modern days, The Senator was a popular tourist attraction, with a boardwalk leading directly to the tree. On January 16, 2012, local resident Sara Barnes hid inside the hollow trunk of the tree in order to light her meth pipe. It was dark, and she lit some papers on fire so she could see what she was doing. The Senator caught on fire. Rather than call for help, Sara took pictures of the fire and videotaped its progress as the flames spread upward through the chimney-like trunk. By the time firefighters arrived, it was far too late to save the tree. • The fire was first thought to have been started by a lightning strike, but Sara Barnes showed the pictures and video around to her friends, one of whom turned her in. She was sentenced to 250 hours of community service, ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution, and given a 30-month suspended sentence provided she abided by terms of her probation. She failed to do so and went to jail in 2016. • The charred stump of The Senator now stands 25 feet (6.1 to 7.6 m) tall. In October 2013, county officials allowed a select group of artists and woodworkers to create works of art for the county from the blackened remains of the tree.

THE TREE OF TéNéRé • The Ténéré is a desert region in the south central Sahara that stretches over 150,000 square miles (400,000 sq/ km). It used to have a more hospitable climate where trees grew. As the climate dried, one grove of trees died off, except for a single remaining hold-out.

• During the winter of 1938-1939, a well was dug near the tree and it was found that the roots of the tree reached the water table 118 feet (36 meters) below the surface, allowing it to survive in one of the harshest environments on the planet. One of the trucks used in digging the well backed into the ten-foot tree, breaking off one of its two branches. Still, the tree survived. • In 1973, a drunk Algerian truck driver was somehow unable to avoid hitting the only tree for miles around. That’s right: a drunk trucker managed to collide with the only tree for 250 miles around. The tree snapped off at the trunk and subsequently died. Its remains are now on display in a museum in Niger, and a metal replica stands in the desert where the tree once stood.

PROMETHEUS • In 1964, Don Currey was a graduate student, studying the history of the climate using dendrochronology, which is the study of tree rings. He knew that the bristlecone pine trees living in the mountains of California and Nevada were known to be among the oldest trees on Earth. Currey began taking core samples of these trees, routinely finding specimens that were over 3,000 years old. • Previous researchers had named one tree Prometheus, after the god who brought fire to humans. Currey named the tree WPN-114, denoting the 114th tree he had sampled in the White Pine area of Nevada. The tree reached a height of 17 feet (5m) and a circumference of 252 inches (6.4m). Large portions of it were dead, but a single 11-foot (3.3m) branch was still alive.

• This acacia tree, called the Tree of Ténéré, was estimated to be some 300 years old. It was once considered to be the most isolated tree on Earth. The closest living tree to it was located 250 miles (400 km) away.

• He tried to take a core sample, but twice his drill bit broke off inside the dense wood. He asked the district ranger for permission to cut the tree down at ground level. The district ranger convinced his superiors that the tree was not particularly notable, and so Prometheus was felled on August 6, 1964.

• It was a landmark on caravan routes through the region, so well-known that it was shown on maps at a scale of 1:4,000,000. The Tree of Ténéré was a ceremonial gathering place for traders and travelers as they crossed the desert. Surrounding the tree in all directions was nothing but sand dunes and desert.

• When Currey and his team sectioned the ancient tree, they were surprised to find it was much older than they expected, much older than any of the other trees in the area. It was at least 4,900 years old. Donald Currey had just cut down and killed the oldest known thing on Earth.

Curry had not known at the time that he was cutting down the world’s oldest tree, but he never lived it down. Outrage was so great that it led to the formation of the Great Basin National Park in Nevada, so that the other ancient trees in the vicinity will be protected forever.

Four months later, the city was declared the capital of the United States. In 1790, the capital was moved to Philadelphia. * On Nov. 19, 1824, a flood on the Neva River near St. Petersburg, Russia, claims an estimated 10,000 lives after an ice jam broke apart and the water overwhelmed the city's dam. The surge was so powerful that several ships were thrown into the city's marketplace. * On Nov. 24, 1849, John Froelich, inventor of the tractor, is born in Iowa. To replace dangerous steam-powered threshers that tended to start fires, Froelich created a one-cylinder gasoline machine. It could thresh more than 1,000 bushels of grain a day without starting a single fire. * On Nov. 21, 1927, Time magazine puts the new Holland Tunnel on its cover. HOLLYWOOD -- Bradley Cooper's direction of Stefanie Germanotta in the reboot of "A Star Is Born" must be so hot, Warners has moved up the opening from September 28 to May 18. In case you don't know, Stefanie Germanotta also is known as Lady Gaga. In this version, the Esther Blodgett/ Vicki Lester character in the Judy Garland version is named Ally, and Cooper's character is named Jackson Maine instead of Norman Maine. Elliott Gould (former husband of Barbra Streisand, who starred in the 1976 reboot) is playing her "benevolent manager." Andrew Dice Clay is portraying her father and Dave Chapelle is playing someone named Noodles. Meanwhile, Chapelle has taped a special for Netix, "The Age of Spin: Dave Chapelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium."

When Chris Pratt starred in "Parks and Recreation" from 2009-2015, he was overweight, which worked for his comedic role on the show. In order to become superhero Peter Quill/Star Lord for "Guardians of the Galaxy" in 2014, he pumped iron and became a super hunk. "Jurassic World" (2015) further cemented his ascent to stardom.

Another "super hunk," Henry Cavill, is of course playing Superman in the Nov. 17 release of "Justice League." He is now ďŹ lming the psychological thriller "Nomis," with Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, Stanley Tucci and Nathan Fillion, and will be dealing with Tom Cruise (they haven't said if it's as a friend or foe) when "Mission: Impossible 6" opens July 27, with Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett and Alec Baldwin.

His wife, Anna Faris, had their son, Jack, in 2012 and began the CBS series "Mom" in 2013. A new baby, both parents working in series and the global attention afforded Chris may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. They announced in August they were amicably separating. Anna has confessed, "Life is too short to be in a relationship where you feel it isn't fully right or somebody doesn't have your back or fully value you!"

Q: Can you give me any news about "Nashville"? It will be back for another season, correct? -- Damian R., via email A: "Nashville" will indeed return to TNT this coming January for its sixth season (no exact date as yet). And don't forget, if you don't have TNT, you can catch each new episode of the show the day after air on Hulu. I also have some casting news: Josh Stamberg has been cast in the recurring role of Darius, the extremely charismatic founder of a self-actualization movement that has transformed many lives. Also, musician/songwriter and acting newcomer Jake Etheridge has been cast in the recurring role of Sean, who is a recent military veteran suffering from severe PTSD who has yet to embrace his talent and passion for music. Also of note, in season ďŹ ve, Jake co-wrote six songs featured on the show, including "Burn to Dark" and "As the Crow Flies." Rainee Lyleson has been cast in the recurring role of Alannah, a beautiful singer-songwriter who starts out as a backup singer but soon will be discovered for the star she is meant to be. Nic Luken has been cast in the recurring role of Jonah Ford. Jonah is a famous male pop star who's handsome, extremely conďŹ dent and charming, exuding all the qualities of a superstar. And ďŹ nally, Dylan Arnold has been cast in the recurring role of Twig, a childhood friend/entourage member to Jonah. Twig navigates this lifestyle by guarding his anxiety and pain with a caustic, brilliant sense of humor. *** Q: Now that "The Catch" has been canceled, can you tell me what Mireille Enos is up to? -- Christina M., via Facebook A: Mireille has been cast as War, one the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, in Neil Gaiman's upcoming television

adaptation of his novel "Good Omens." There's a boatload of talent already on board for this project, including Michael Sheen, David Tennant and Jon Hamm. The series, which is now shooting in the U.K., is set for a 2019 premiere on Amazon Prime. The versatile actress also is ďŹ lming the HBO movie "My Dinner with Herve," with Peter Dinklage, Jamie Dornan, David Strathairn and Andy Garcia. Peter portrays Herve Villechaize, co-star of "Fantasy Island," the hit fantasy/ drama series that ran on ABC from 1977 to 1984. Mireille plays Kathy Self, Herve's longtime girlfriend. *** READERS: A few weeks back, I mentioned the date for the season premiere of TNT's "The Librarians," which was supposed to be a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Well, the network is moving the launch date of the hugely popular fantasy series. Season four now will have a ONE-episode premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), with episode two making its debut the following Wednesday, and so on. Looks like Christmas will be coming even earlier for "The Librarians" fans. WOVEN PLACEMATS HOLD THANKSGIVING MEMORIES I'm thankful for Thanksgiving. It's a time to gather with friends and relatives around a table, savor one another's favorite dishes and simply be grateful for what we have. The pre-dinner outdoor fun, like a rousing game of family football, the food and the stories add up to times to remember, especially for kids. Holiday memories often weave in and out of our lives like a warm tapestry enfolding each member of the family. At Thanksgiving, or during any of the winter celebrations, it's worth a little extra effort to create special times for sharing with one another. Here's an easy way for your school-age children to start a tradition and set their mark on Thanksgiving Day by weaving memory place mats. The colorful addition to the table setting only requires the basics: paper, scissors and glue. A ruler and pencil are helpful, too.

CUTTING Use a large sheet of colored construction paper for the place mat. Fold in half widthwise. Along the fold, use a

ruler and pencil to mark four to six evenly spaced dots. Measure and mark corresponding dots along the opposite edge. Cut through both layers of the place mat, beginning at the fold and ending within 1 inch of the opposite edge. Be creative by varying the straight cuts with zigzags or a wavy design.

fan page. Her latest book is "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families."

Now cut construction paper in contrasting colors in nine or 10 12-by-1-inch strips for weaving in and out of the cuts. You might want to make some strips a little wider or narrower.

WEAVING Weave the place mat by feeding one of the strips through the slits. Show your kids how to slip the strips over, then under. When the first row is done, slide the strip to the edge of the slits, and glue the ends to the back of the place mat. Repeat with remaining strips until completed. As your children become engrossed in the activity, you may wish to join them, making your own place mats. The rhythms of weaving are repetitive and satisfying -back and forth with bright, brighter and brightest patterns as you slip the strips over, then under.

Make place mats for all settings at your table. For added touches, decorate with cutouts of construction paper in contrasting colors or add stickers, small pictures and photos representing memories of past Thanksgivings. Personalize a place mat by writing little notes to guests. When family and friends settle around the holiday table, be ready to capture the moment when your child exclaims, "Aunt Jane, I wove a Thanksgiving Day place mat just for you!"

* If you switch high-interest-rate credit cards to zero interest, how quickly can you pay off the balances? * Investigate free services that are available to low-income seniors. * Do you have enough clothing for the next year? Include winter gear and shoes, which can be big-ticket items. While you're practicing living on only Social Security, stock up.

TRIAL RUN: LIVING ON SOCIAL SECURITY If you've reached the age where you can collect Social Security and keep working without any reduction in your benefits, at some point you're going to wonder: When is it safe to retire? Before you let go of that paycheck, do a trial run. Try to live for a period of time (at least six months) on just an amount that would equal your Social Security income should you retire. Use the rest of your work income to pay off all your bills and put some money aside. To determine if Social Security will be enough, save every receipt and make a list of every single cent you spend. At the end of each month, divide your expenses into categories such as Basics, Fun, Needs, Wants or whatever applies to your lifestyle. Your Social Security should at least pay for basic monthly bills and medical care. Here's how to get started:

Many seniors will have only Social Security benefits during retirement. The time to determine if that amount will be livable is before you actually stop working.

* Will any of the local churches be hosting free holiday dinners? Consider going. Call to ask if they need help setting up beforehand. * Check out a tall stack of books from the library for your at-home days. You might discover a new author you like. While you're at the library, offer to sign up for book shelving if others aren't available on their regular schedule. While nothing can take the place of having family and friends with you over the holidays, alternating busy days with relaxing ones at home can help make the holidays less stressful. ARE YOU DREADING THE HOLIDAYS? Are you already dreading the holidays? If you are, you're not alone. Many seniors feel the pressures of lack of money at this time of year, or the even bigger burden of loneliness because family has moved away and friends have passed away. While there are no fixes for these, there are some steps you can take to feel better and maybe enjoy the holidays. * Grab the newspaper, a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list of all the free events in your area and plan to attend at least some of them.

* Calculate which parts of your lifestyle you'll be able to continue. Club membership with dues? Movies twice a month with lunch afterward? Investigate free activities and events in your area.

* Call the volunteer services at the hospital and sign up to work certain holidays so that employees can take a day off. You could man the front desk, push the magazine and book cart or deliver packages to patients.

* Figure a monthly plan for your utilities. Take your last year of bills and divide by twelve to determine your monthly cost.

* Check senior centers to see what events they might be hosting. Ask if they're joining with the community children's fund and will be wrapping presents. If they're planning a bus trip to a big city to see plays or do sightseeing, chances are the costs will be affordable at group pricing.

* Is your vehicle paid for? How about your cellphone? Pay them off with your work money.

1. Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees retired in 2016 as the fifth-ranked player for career home runs by a switch-hitter (409). Name two of the four ahead of him on the list.

FLY ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND For every certain moment of greatness in sports, there is an equally certain moment of tragedy. On Nov. 7, 2017, Roy "Doc" Halladay became the living embodiment of that sentiment through his death. Halladay was a great pitcher. Baseball is a funny sport in that hitters get all the accolades, but true fans and those in the business of the sport know that pitchers are what make the game work. Fans may cheer for the home-run hitter, but it's the pitcher who puts the ball in play, and it's the pitcher who sends that hitter back to the bench with a few killer curves and fastballs that most people in the upper decks can't even see nor comprehend. Halladay was just such a guy. Seven times he was in the top five for the Cy Young award; twice he left with the iron. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, his was a figure you couldn't ignore. For years, it was common knowledge around the league that if you had Halladay, you had a winner on your team.

To understand Halladay's dominance during the early parts of the 21st century, you only need check the baseball columns of the day. Halladay pitched in Toronto for 12 seasons, and every single team wanted him in their uniform next. Philadelphia won that contest, and the instant credibility he lent to the franchise was impossible to miss every fourth day. "There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings ever to play the game," read the Phillies twitter, echoing sentiments of fans everywhere. It's creepy that Roy died in a plane crash. While air travel is considered the safest means of transport, it was hard for baseball fans to believe when Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson both met their early demise in a small cockpit. Halladay, it seemed, couldn't resist the allure either. "I have dreamed about owning a A5 since I retired! Real life is better [than] my dreams!!" Halladay tweeted on Oct. 13. Well, Roy got his wish, and we got to watch him play. He's in a better place, and every sportsman was better for having known the guy. Rest in peace, Roy ... fly on. 3. When was the last time before 2016 that Navy's football team defeated a top-10-ranked school? 4. Who was that last coach to lead the Sacramento Kings to the NBA playoffs? 5. In 2017, Nashville's Frederick Gaudreau became the second player in NHL history to score his first three career goals in the Stanley Cup Finals. Who was the first? 6. Five drivers have been back-to-back winners of Daytona's summer NASCAR race. Can you name three of them? 7. Name the last women's major tennis tournament before the 2017 French Open to have no past Grand Slam champions reach the quarterfinals.

Answers 1. Mickey Mantle (536 home runs), Eddie Murray (504), Chipper Jones (468) and Carlos Beltran (421 entering 2017). 2. Three times -- 1908, 1911 and 1917. 3. Navy beat No. 2 South Carolina in 1984. 4. Rick Adelman, in the 2005-2006 season. 5. John Harms of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1944. 6. Fireball Roberts (1962-63), A.J. Foyt (1964-65), Cale Yarborough (1967-68), David Pearson (1972-74) and Tony Stewart (2005-06). 7. The 1979 Australian Open.

He won 20 games three times, 19 games twice. Never lost more than 11 games in a season, ever. His lifetime WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) was 1.17 ... better than Bob Gibson (1.18), Jim Palmer (1.18) and Bob Feller (1.3) to cherry-pick a few. He threw two no-hitters -- one a perfect game and another in the playoffs, matching only Don Larsen in that feat. He won 203 games and lost only 105. The guy had Hall of Fame written all over him, and there was little doubt that he could have kept pitching after his retirement. He was only 40 when he died.

to pet Charlie gently. If your dog growls or gives any sign of being stressed, back away or have your grandson pull back, to prevent any nips or wild barking.

Regardless of your state's law, keep your pet safe by making sure it is either in a carrier or a pet-specific seat restraint when you drive.

Don't get discouraged if the relationship doesn't work out, and don't force it. Instead, focus on teaching your grandson how to safely approach and interact with dogs. When he's older and has more self-control, you again can try to bring them together.

Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

CAN DOG, GRANDSON EVER BE FRIENDS?

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: What do you think of the law in the U.K. that fines drivers up to $6,580 for having their pets unrestrained in the car? Isn't that the perfect example of government overreach? -- Chuck G., El Paso, Texas

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I was hoping that my 3-year-old grandson and my dog "Charlie" would get along. But Charlie, who's a little Chihuahua, always barks like crazy when my grandson walks in the room. It scares my grandson, who starts crying. How can I bring these two together to be friends? -- Jerry T., Wichita, Kansas

DEAR CHUCK: That is a hefty fine, but I understand why the law is on the books. While some dogs are comfortable sitting unrestrained in a back seat or passenger seat, so they can put their head out the window (you never see an unhappy dog doing that, ever), many pets have a hard time sitting comfortably as the car moves about.

DEAR JERRY: You may need to wait until your grandson is a little bit older to properly introduce them. Charlie appears to be getting stressed when the toddler comes into the room. Is Charlie a rescue? Maybe there's an incident in his past that is making him nervous when small children are around. Or, being a small dog, Charlie may simply be unnerved by your grandson's size or gait.

Unrestrained, dogs may slide around, fall onto the floor and otherwise be stressed by the ride. Some may get really agitated and clamber around in the car, distracting you. I know from experience how difficult it is to keep a car on the road when a cat panics, climbs up the fabric of the back of the driver's seat, and sinks both front claws into your shoulder.

Tell your grandson not to try and touch or grab Charlie, and to speak quietly. At this point, if Charlie remains calm when he's face to face with a toddler, then give your grandson permission

And of course, if there's an accident and your pet is unrestrained, serious injury can result. Your pet will crash into objects inside the car, or be thrown completely out of the car. The U.K. isn't alone in enacting legislation to restrain pets in moving cars. Nine U.S. states have laws on the books as of June 2017, Orvis.com reports. Each law has different requirements and penalties, but all agree that an unrestrained pet can contribute to distracted driving or an obstructed view.

proudly inhale their own toxic fumes from their own "cancer sticks." Almost a half-century later, they have continued to inch forward. Their progress, however, has been littered with ongoing discrimination obstacles. Even in this day and age, we have pay disparities, gross unfairness when it comes to hiring and promotion, and that lingering poison of sexual assault and harassment. With that one, women definitely have not come a long way, not just over 50 years, but from when we lived together in caves.

In 1968, Phillip Morris decided the time had come to market cigarettes toward women, who had begun to make discernible social progress and were finally moving away from the stifling ideal of the barefoot-and-pregnant child-raising homemaker role. They had started achieving a less restricted, independent role where they could choose to make their mark in the professional world.

We still have an opportunity to figure things out. By "we" I mean men, since the vast majority of offenses are from males directed at females -- 80 to 90 percent, depending on the source compiling the statistics. That is just the reported incidents. Perhaps when we look back we will thank movie mogul Harvey Weinstein for raising our consciousness -- a perverse gratitude, to say the least. The public charges of his sexual brutality over decades, allegedly assaulting women whose performing careers could be enhanced or destroyed by his powerful whim, have created an avalanche. It has buried not only him, but a growing list of other prominent men.

The cigarette manufacturer celebrated this new glimmering of freedom by creating a Virginia Slims brand that was promoted for women with the slogan "You've come a long way, baby!" The cynical message, of course, was that females were now liberated, so they could

They deserve, in my opinion, to be ostracized. It's that black and white. Discipline should be harsh going forward for various gross and demonstrably unwelcome propositions that women endure on the job from the horn-dog men who saturate the workplace. But now we

SHADES OF GRAY

*** Q: I have a small cut-glass bottle that has a glass stopper and a silver cap. The bottle is rectangular, about 4 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. I read that in Victorian times, a widow would collect her tears in a vial. Could my bottle be one of these?

WALL CLOCK WITH AUTOMATA Sometimes identifying and dating an antique seems easy, but it fools you. An unusual wall clock was offered at a recent auction. It was labeled "Friesland wall clock with automata, 1800." Friesland is a section of Holland where people have been making clocks since the 1600s. Automata, of course, are the moving figures -- in this case, boats -- that are included below the clock dial for decoration and amusement. There was a moving scene with a woman milking a cow, a fisherman with a fish and three ships with sails. The clock also struck at an hour and half-hour. The clock case has windows that show the moving pendulum. Add to that the decoration of the case and dial, painted-iron Roman numerals, pierced brass hands and mahogany marquetry trim on the wooden case and hood. It had many characteristics of an early 1800s Dutch clock. It was the oldest and the most expensive of many Friesland wall clocks in the sale. Bidders also were sure it was an early clock, and the winning bid was $3,444.

A: Tear collecting is referenced in the Old Testament of the Bible, in ancient Roman and Greek writings, and in Victorian poems and novels, but whether tear collecting was fact or legend is unclear. In the mid-1800s, when Victorian mourning customs became popular, it is said vials were used to collect tears wept for the departed loved one. Later, the tears were sprinkled on the grave to signify the end of official mourning. Another version of the custom claims mourning would last until the tears evaporated. It's difficult to imagine how a crying person could coax their tears into such a small bottle, but it makes a very romantic image. During the Victorian era, glass bottles were made with decorative caps, and were similar in shape to some scent bottles. Your bottle, cut glass with a silver filigree cap, is worth about $30. If there is a silver maker's mark on the cap, it will be worth more. *** TIP: Ordinary beer is great for cleaning a gilded mirror frame. Just pour it on a soft rag, rub gently and dry. Is there a collector on your holiday shopping list? The 50th Anniversary edition of "Kovels' Antiques & Collect-

get to that gray area, and the various shades of gray. I'll pause for a moment while everyone yuks it up about "Shades of Grey." Are we done? Let's proceed: Also surfacing are lots of reports about the unintentional but ignorant forms of harassment -- frankly, stuff that I believe should not be considered harassment at all. Does an off-color remark of any kind qualify? Should we ban any sort of tactile behavior, such as touching someone on the arm in a purely nonsexual way? How do we define all that? That would be the shades of gray. Do we really want a place of employment that would make the Church Lady ecstatic? Are we to make the same mistake that academe has made, by overdoing protections against anything that might be considered politically incorrect. "Safe places" don't work on campuses, and they are unrealistic in the adult workplace. We can become safer, however -- and civilized and, might I add, productive. Obviously, we need to encourage prosecution -- yes, criminal prosecution -- of assault, and dismissal for those who act boorishly. Beyond that, we can candidly communicate with one another and agree on realistic guidelines. Only then will women -- and men -- really have come a long way. (c) 2017 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd.

ibles Price Guide 2018" makes a great gift. The 548-page softcover book features 20,000 listings and more than 2,500 full-color photographs, plus trends, special events and surprises. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc. It was more important to own a clock in the 1800s than it is now. There were no cellphones, land phones, wristwatches or electric clocks to tell time if you didn't have a clock -- just the chiming clock in the church steeple or city hall. Home clocks had to be wound at least once a week to keep accurate time. This 1800s Dutch clock had chimes and an entertaining moving scene of ships and fishing. It sold in Massachusetts for $3,444 at a Skinner Inc. auction.

IT'S CRANBERRY SEASON

Depositphotos.com

Cranberries are part of many fall holiday feasts, but their nutritious tastiness is worth having at any time. Like many fruits, cranberries are high in ďŹ ber and vitamin C and low in calories and fat. A fresh cup of these tangy berries has just 51 calories, with 5 grams of ďŹ ber and 24 percent of the vitamin C the average person needs in a day. Cranberries are packed with antioxidants that may help maintain heart health and reduce cholesterol. The tannins in cranberries may help prevent gum disease and urinary tract infections. In the lab, cranberries prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract and the gum line. According to the November 2010 edition of the Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter, "a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigating cranberry intake and urinary-tract infections showed that there has been some beneďŹ t established in reducing the number of infections in women." Cranberry juice often is the form used when deliberately seeking to prevent infection. The uid in the juice does help maintain hydration, which is known to help prevent infection. Cranberries are very tart and often are .consumed in combination with sugar. For example, a

touch & take off!

glass of cranberry juice cocktail has about 30 grams of sugar and 137 calories. To add whole cranberries to your diet year-round, try baking cranberry nut bread, sprinkle dried cranberries on salads or include them in trail mix.

1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup white grape juice 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Cranberries also can be used to decorate your home during the holidays. Try placing cranberries in a glass bowl with water and place a oating candle in the container. You're only limited by your imagination and creativity. The Thanksgiving table would not be complete without the cranberry sauce. No need to open a can when this delicious Holiday Cranberry Sauce is so simple to make at home! And after Thanksgiving, use the cranberry sauce to create these delicious Sweet Potato Cranberry MufďŹ ns!

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 (12-ounce) package fresh cranberries, rinsed and drained Combine all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer until thick (about 15 minutes), stirring occasionally. Cool completely. Makes 16 (3 tablespoon) servings. ***

HOLIDAY CRANBERRY SAUCE This sauce can be made ahead and will keep in an airtight container for 2 weeks. Combine this wonderful sauce with 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard and pour it over leftover turkey, baked ďŹ sh, chicken or pork. It's a delicious way to ďŹ nish the dish and a wonderful use for any Thanksgiving leftovers.

Every two years, competitors from 75 WorldSkills member countries compete to find out who is the best at a variety of skilled trades, ranging from bricklaying, plumbing and cabinetmaking to auto body repair, die-making and electronics. Personal services contests include hairdressing and restaurant service, while florists and jewelry-makers compete in the creative arts and fashion category. IT folks can get in on the action, too, with awards for skills such as web design, information network cabling and IT software solutions for business.

DEAR DR. ROACH: About a year ago, I began to experience irritation in my left eye. It felt like there was a scratch or eyelash in it all the time. It became very inflamed. The other eye is affected, but to a lesser degree. All types of treatment for dry eye have been unsuccessful. Most recently I have been using a serum made from my blood. My eyes are red and weepy, and my left eye feels sore or achy at the back of the eyeball, if that makes sense. I'm hoping that you might have some suggestion about treatment. -- N.T. ANSWER: Dry eyes can be caused by many different conditions, and this is very prevalent in the population, especially in older individuals. Because many conditions can cause it, I can't offer any one specific treatment, and it sounds like you have tried a lot already. First-line treatment includes artificial tears, one drop four times daily. Preservative-free formulations may be helpful for some people, but they are more expensive. Gels and ointments may be more effective, but since they can blur the vision temporarily, they work best at bedtime.

ANSWER: Although large amounts of alcohol can predispose a person to bleeding, a small glass shouldn't affect bleeding much or at all. You should see your doctor, who probably will check your platelet count and go from there. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had a low resistance to germs and have caught colds every two to three months. I take adequate vitamins and B-12 shots. Approximately eight months ago, I started taking 50 mg zinc once a day. I feel fine and have not caught a cold since taking zinc. A local pharmacist advised that zinc contains too much metal to take on a regular basis and to take it only at the onset of a cold. I feel fine now and would like to continue taking zinc. What do you advise? -- L.F. ANSWER: It is unusual to see problems from excess zinc, but it can happen. Zinc and copper both are absorbed by the same enzyme, so with too much zinc, you can't properly absorb copper. A student of mine published a report of someone who took MUCH more zinc than you are taking (the adequate intake per the Institute of Medicine is 11 mg, and you are taking about five times that amount; this person was taking 30 times the recommended amount), who had extraordinarily low copper levels and dangerously low white blood-cell counts.

The upper limit for safe zinc intake is 40 mg, and I would definitely recommend against taking more than that every day. I would think taking 25 mg daily would be safe. However, it's not clear that zinc prevents colds, at least when studied in large groups of people.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with a skin condition called dermatitis herpetiformis 35 years ago. He was prescribed dapsone and has been taking it ever since. We have moved to Florida, and none of the doctors here know anything about dapsone. He is unable to get a prescription.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I'm a healthy 61-year-old woman. I take no prescription medicine or aspirin. I recently had a flu shot at a health fair, after which blood ran down my arm all the way to the elbow. I then had a tube of blood taken for a cholesterol check, and they had a hard time stopping the bleeding. I started drinking a small glass of red wine in the evening a few weeks ago. Could the red wine be thinning my blood, or is this something I should see my doctor about? -- C.M.

Right now, he is miserable with a horrible skin rash with blisters, and he itches constantly. He is careful with his diet (he is lactose intolerant), but otherwise can find no answers. Dapsone is the only thing that helps him. Please help. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Dermatitis herpetiformis is an uncommon skin disease seen more often in people with ancestry from northern Europe. In the vast majority of cases, it is linked to gluten sensitivity (celiac disease). A gluten-free diet is one mainstay of treatment, and the other is dapsone. Dapsone is a powerful medication with many potential side effects that must be used by someone familiar with it who must be monitored carefully with periodic exams and blood tests. It causes hemolysis (breakdown of blood cells) to a small extent in most people; however, in people with a condition called G-6PD deficiency, the hemolysis can be fatal. If your husband hadn't been taking it safely before, he would be tested for this common enzyme deficiency before being prescribed dapsone. Most people with dermatitis herpetiformis who stick to their gluten-free diet carefully are able to stop dapsone eventually. Your husband needs a very experienced dermatologist and advice on a gluten-free diet. Two places to start are www.celiac.org and www.gluten.net. A dietician can be very useful as well. Fortunately, there are many gluten-free options available now. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about apple cider vinegar. I have heard that you can use it in small doses as an antacid. It seems to be a contradiction because it is acidic in nature. Is this true or just an old wives' tale? -- C.V.

ANSWER: Old wives' tales sometimes contain great wisdom. In this case, however, there is no scientific data to back it up. There are many anecdotal reports of success and many theories why it might work. However, I'm a believer in evidence, not theories, and there just isn't any. Further, vinegar can damage teeth, so if you try it, be sure to rinse carefully or use a straw. That being said, it's unlikely to do any other harm, so it may be worth a try. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. COMPOSERS •Charlie Shavers, trumpeter for the Tommy Dorsey band, once wrote a song for Benny Goodman. When Benny received the sheet music, he saw that there was no title listed. He telegrammed Shavers, “What's the title?” and Shavers wired back, “Title undecided.” Benny called the tune “Undecided” and added some appropriate lyrics: “You're undecided now, so what am I gonna do?” •During World War II, Irving Berlin wrote a musical called “Yip Yip Yaphank.” He ended up removing one of the songs from the script, and he stuck it in a trunk. It stayed there for 22 years before he gave it to Kate Smith. She was singing on the radio on Armistice Day in 1939 and wanted something patriotic to sing. The song, “God Bless America” was a smash hit. Some people called it America's second national anthem. Berlin was surprised by its success and donated all of the proceeds to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

•Composer Edward Elgar wrote a piece called “Salute d'Amore” when he was starting out, which made a lot of money for his publisher, but little for himself. One day he was listening to a street musician play the piece when he saw a passerby drop a coin in the player's hat. “Well,” Elgar quipped, “He just made more money off that piece than I did!”

•Franz Josef Haydn was conductor of the Duke's orchestra when the musicians became annoyed because the Duke wouldn't let them take any time off for vacation. They asked Haydn to do something about it. Finally Haydn composed the “Farewell Symphony” where the performance begins with a full orchestra. One by one each musician finishes playing his part, blows out a candle next to him, and leaves the stage as the others continue to play. Finally only one player is left playing, and then that one too blows out the candle and leaves. The Duke got the message.

•Rossini's opera “William Tell” is over seven hours long when performed as written. It's usually performed in an abbreviated version.

•The original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German musician who lived in the late 1800s. He wrote the opera “Hansel and Gretel.” In the 1960s, an English pop singer named Arnold George Dorsey adopted the stage name and turned out several hits including “Release Me” in 1967.

•Composer Arthur Seymour was so tipsy when he left a party that he found he was unable to identify his home in a row of identical looking houses. So he went up the street kicking the metal boot scrapers that stood in front of the doorsteps. “That's it,” he said after kicking one, “E-flat,” and walked into his house.

•By the age of 6 Mozart was writing his own compositions. He composed his first great mass at the age of 12 and wrote his first opera when he was only 14 years old.

•Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini, who had an incredible musical memory, was approached by a clarinetist who said he could not play in the concert scheduled for that night because the E-natural key on his instrument had broken. Toscanini thought for a few moments, then told the musician he could indeed play because there were no E-naturals written into his music that night. He was right. •In his old age, Brahms declared to his friends that he was going to stop writing music. After a few days went by without music, Brahms sat down and wrote a new composition. “I thought you weren't going to write anymore,” said a friend. “I wasn't,” he replied. “But after a few days away from it, I was so happy at the thought of no more writing that the music came to me without effort.”

Edward Elgar, c. 1900
