DANGEROUS TOYS by Janet Spencer Come along with Tidbits as we play with some dangerous toys!
A LITTLE CHEMISTRY • The A.C. Gilbert toy company had a hit in 1913 when they invented the erector set. The company went on to release many educational toys such as microscopes and magic tricks. However, there were issues with several of their products. One was a chemistry set which offered 56 different chemicals. There was potassium nitrate (used in gunpowder); ammonium nitrate (used in bombs); nitric acid (used in rocket fuel); sulfuric acid (highly corrosive); and calcium hypochlorite (creates poisonous gas). A piece of safety advice, offered on the page with instructions for creating an explosion out of homemade gunpowder, was: “Do not try this on a bigger scale or a larger explosion will result.” • The kits were intended to be used under adult supervision while strictly following the instructions but that didn’t always happen. Given the proclivity of kids to mix things up, such as adding sodium ferro-cyanide to iron ions to create poisonous cyanide, parents became concerned and A.C. Gilbert Corp. had to release chemistry sets with more mundane chemicals. • Another of A.C. Gilbert’s bad ideas was the glassblowing kit. What could possibly go wrong when you hand a kid a blow torch and encourage them to heat a glob of glass to 1,000 F (538 C) and then do a bunch of experiments with molten glass? No safety equipment was included in the kit, nor even suggested in the manual. The guidebook contained complete instructions on how to make glass straws, champagne glasses, window glass, and even beakers. “You’ll know the glass is hot when it’s glowing red.” • Perhaps the very worst of A.C. Gilbert’s ideas was the U-238 Atomic Energy Lab. The kit included a Geiger counter that ran on three C-cell batteries, three types of uranium ore, a nuclear fission chamber, radium samples, polonium samples, and an electroscope. A form in the back of the manual allowed kids to send off for mail-order uranium refills, as well as instructions on how to search for uranium deposits where you lived. The kit also included a comic book called “Dagwood Splits the Atom” in which Dagwood and Blondie, along with Popeye, gave kids a crash course in atomic energy. Some of the experiments required kids to go out and purchase their own block of dry ice, which has a temperature of -109.3 F (-78 C) The U-238 Atomic Energy Lab was released in 1950 and removed from the market in 1951. continued on page 3

DANGEROUS TOYS (continued):
• If melting glass wasn’t dangerous enough, A.C. Gilbert also released the Kaster Kit with everything needed to melt metal to create die-cast figures. Kids melted lead in an electric crucible that reached temperatures up to 400 F (204 C) and poured the molten metal into one of 32 different molds in order to create their own lead soldiers. The manual contained only a single piece of safety advice: “Don’t pour water into the molten metal.” • Why not hand children a bunch of oversize pointy steeltipped darts and then encourage those children to hurl said darts across the yard? That was the thinking of the inventor of the game called Jarts. A cross between darts and horseshoes, the force of a thrown Jart could reach up to 23,000 pounds of pressure per inch, more than needed to penetrate the skull. In an attempt to avoid pierced skulls, the packaging said, “For adults only” but after 6,100 injuries and three deaths in eight years, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned Jarts in 1988. Today you can find the revamped game, made with projectiles that have safely rounded plastic ends. • In 2007, the Spin Master Company introduced Aqua Dots. Aqua Dots consisted of tiny colorful beads that could be assembled into different designs. Just add a few drops of water to activate the built-in glue, and the individual dots would fuse into solid shapes. It was named “Toy of the Year,” an honor that was rescinded when young children who had swallowed the beads became dizzy, nauseous, and comatose. The water-activated glue on Aqua Dots contained chemicals that metabolized into gamma-hydroxybutyrate, better known as the date rape drug GHB. The product was on the market for less than eight months before being recalled. • The hot new toy in 2010 was called Colossal Water Balls. These gel-like balls were about the size of gumballs or marbles, but would expand to 400 times their size when soaked in water. Since they looked like candy, small children swallowed them. Balls then proceeded to swell to 400 times their size while inside the child’s intestinal tract, causing blockages that did not show up on X-rays and had to be surgically removed. They were removed from the market in 2012. • When Cabbage Patch dolls were all the rage, the hot new version for the holiday season of 1996 was the Cabbage Patch Snacktime Kids doll. These dolls were built to mechanically chew and swallow plastic food provided, which would then magically appear in the plastic backpack worn by the doll. There were two basic problems with the design. First was that the chewing/swallowing mechanism was activated any time anything was placed inside the doll’s mouth, such as fingers or pony tails. There was no way the doll could differentiate between the approved plastic food and the tail of the family cat. The second problem was that once the doll started chowing down, there was no “on/off” switch and the only way to stop the chewing action
PREMIER
was to find and remove the doll’s batteries. After many pinched fingers and a couple of kids nearly scalped, half a million Snacktime Cabbage Patch dolls were recalled in 1997. • Kids love toy guns and in the 1940s the Austin Magic Pistol lived up to expectations even though the ammunition consisted of ping pong balls. The issue wasn’t the ammo used as much as it was the propellant that powered the ping pong balls. The instructions called for loading the ping pong balls into the muzzle of the pistol, and then sprinkling the “magic crystals” into a small screwtop container in the back of the gun. Next, just add a few drops of water, and then pull the trigger to see your ping pong ball launched up to 70 feet away. The problem was that the “magic crystals” were actually calcium carbide which reacts explosively with water to form poisonous and flammable acetylene gas. Not only did it launch the ping pong balls with a fiery muzzle blast, but the screwtop container in the rear often blew its top.

HOLLYWOOD -- Chris Hemsworth's biggest moneymakers have been the six films in which he played Thor (20112017). Despite the golden touch of director Ron Howard, "In the Heart of the Sea" (2015) cost $100 million and grossed only $94 million. "The Huntsman: Winter War" (2016) cost $115 million and grossed $165 million (which wasn't a break-even gross). With "Avengers: Infinity War" now completed and due May 4, and the untitled "Avengers" movie currently filming (for a May 2019 premiere), Hemsworth is filling in the gaps with "12 Strong," with Michael Shannon and "Mom's" William Fichtner, opening Jan. 19. Also upcoming is "Bad Times at the El Royale," set in a dilapidated part of the California Lake Tahoe region, with Jeff Bridges as a down-on-his-luck priest.
Another star needing a big hit is Gerard Butler. While "London Has Fallen" (2016) grossed $206 million, "A Family Man" (2017), with Gretchen Mol, Alfred Molina, Allison Brie and Willem Dafoe, made $1.2 million overseas and nothFREE ESTIMATES ing in the U.S., and "Geostorm" (2017) needed to make dou954-925-6233 ble its $120 million cost to turn a profit and only grossed 2327 N 21st. That won't include the famed 20th Century Fox lot, which still will be owned by Rupert Murdoch and has 80 permanent buildings (sound stages and offices) spread over 1.8 million square feet. Currently, "Modern Family, "Fresh Off the Boat," "The Orville," "Speechless," "The Mick" and Ryan Murphy's "American Crime Story: The Versace Murder," among others, film there. In 1956, Fox sold its vast back-lot acreage to cover losses when Elizabeth Taylor's "Cleopatra" went millions of dollars over budget. The back lot was converted into The Century Plaza Hotel, Century City, with huge office buildings and a huge mall. Now that Disney owns ABC Television, Pixar, The Marvel Universe, the "Star Wars" franchise and more, the only thing Disney has to worry about is 21st Century Fox gobbling up Mickey Mouse! Teaching her daughters to express thanks to others started on a practical level when her oldest, Presley, turned 4. "I was standing in the background at gift-opening time at her birthday party when the eager guests circled the birthday girl. It felt like a feeding frenzy," she says. "They closed in, and it moved fast. With all the excitement, Presley tore through the wrappings, so it was hard to get a complete list of who gave what." That's when Amy came up with an idea the following year to ask gift-givers to stand with her daughter while she opened their present, so she could snap a photo of them as they posed with the gift. Through the years, she has seen how both the giver and receiver feel special when they capture the moment together.
HELP KIDS SAY 'THANKS' FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS Gifts, meals, activities, memories. It's that time of the new year to share a big "thanks" to those who made the December holidays special for our families and kids. By doing so, we model to the youngest generation the habit of expressing appreciation to others. Hopefully they'll grow into the "saying thanks" habit without our prodding. According to Amy Jaworsky, editor for the Hearst Corporation and mom of two school-age girls, 13 and 8: "Acknowledging someone's generosity is a reminder to ourselves of all we have to be grateful for. The more we realize how lucky we are, the more apt we are to want to deserve it by being better people." Good words for all, not just for kids.
When it comes time to say "thanks," she has no worries making sure the right card is with the right gift. "I have the evidence in my camera," she says. "I print out the photos and we mount them to simple cards with envelopes. As my daughters grow older, they can express a more detailed 'thanks,'" she adds. Here are more saying "thank you" ideas: -- If your child received a holiday gift from someone who wasn't present, take a photo of your child enjoying building with the new blocks, dressing a new doll or shooting a puck with the new hockey stick. Print it, and mount it on a card with a personally written thank you.

* On Jan. 9, 1776, writer Thomas Paine publishes his pamphlet "Common Sense," setting forth his arguments in favor of American independence. Pamphlets were an important medium for the spread of ideas in the 16th through 19th centuries. * On Jan. 12, 1926, the two-man comedy series "Sam 'n' Henry" debuts on Chicago's WGN radio station. Two years later, after changing its name to "Amos 'n' Andy," it became one of the most popular radio programs in American history. * On Jan. 11, 1935, American aviatrix Amelia Earhart departs Wheeler Field in Honolulu on a solo flight to North America. Hawaiian commercial interests had offered a $10,000 award to whoever first accomplished the flight. The next day, after traveling 2,400 miles in 18 hours, Earhart landed safely in Oakland, California. * On Jan. 10, 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt introduces the lendlease program to Congress to help Britain beat back Hitler's advance while keeping America only indi-
rectly involved in World War II. By the end of the war, more than $50 billion in funds, weapons, aircraft and ships had been distributed to 44 countries. * On Jan. 8, 1962, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is exhibited for the first time in America. * On Jan. 14, 1973, the Miami Dolphins defeat the Washington Redskins 14-7 at the Los Angeles Coliseum in Super Bowl VII, becoming the first team in NFL history to finish with an undefeated season. * On Jan. 13, 1982, an Air Florida Boeing 727 plunges into the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., killing 78 people. The crash, caused by bad weather, took place only 2 miles from the White House. Investigators said the plane had to wait too long after being de-iced before it could take off, allowing new ice to accumulate on the wings. (c) 2017 Hearst Communications, Inc. All rights reserved

CAT RELATIONSHIP IS ALL ABOUT COMPROMISE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Why do cats do what they do? Why do they tear ornaments off the Christmas tree, knock glasses off the coffee table, attack our shoelaces and knead their claws into our sweater? Is there any way to get mine to stop doing, like, all of these

Having a cat means making a few compromises in your life, particularly in the interior-decorating department. It means being more careful about setting expensive glassware on the countertop. It means a Christmas tree whose bottom third remains undecorated, or adorned with unbreakable, pet-safe ornaments. It means patiently retying your shoelaces after your cat has pounced on them. It means buying a new sweater every fall, or keeping your favorite ones in a drawer to wear on special occasions only. The tradeoff, however, is that you have a companion for many happy years. A cat kneading his or her claws on your sweater while curled up in your lap is an expression of contentment, an acknowledgment that you're family. You don't have to give up all the breakable things that you love in order to live with your cat, you just need to make a few concessions to keep both your cat and your glassware safe. Harvard unveiled the play in 1892 against Yale, and people literally stood in awe when they saw the team take the formation. THE FLYING WEDGE As a student at Harvard University, a young Theodore Roosevelt championed "the vigorous life," and the burgeoning sport of American football was something he clearly supported. When he became president, the game often figured in his landmark speeches. "In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: hit the line hard; don't foul and don't shirk, but hit the line hard!" His mood changed a few years later, however, when his young son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. enrolled at Harvard and joined the football team. The annual Harvard-Yale game had become the nation's top sporting event by this time, and football had become far more violent than the "masculine game" Roosevelt knew from his time in college. This was the era of the "flying wedge." A Harvard alumnus and war historian noted that the game's strategy closely mirrored military maneuvers. Even though he never played a down of football, he designed the flying wedge -- a play that mimicked the tactics of Napoleon's army by concentrating a large number
Pundits estimated that a flying wedge weighed more than a quarter-ton. Every resulting pileup from a play lent itself to anticipation: Was somebody crushed?
1. Josh Beckett won 20 games in 2007. 2. Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki, 2001-10. 3. Mike Vanderjagt, with 42 in a row (2002-04). 4. Bob Kurland, in 1948 and 1952. 5. Once -- the Chicago Blackhawks, in 2017. 6. It was in 1958. 7. Bernard Hinault, in 1985.
EDITORS: This column originally ran in 2006.
The play helped spark interest in the game. Parke Davis, an early sports writer, commented that the play energized fans. "Sensation runs through the stands at the novel play, which is the most organized and beautiful one ever seen upon a football field."
(c) 2017 King Features Syndicate, Inc. The answer, sadly, was often yes. In 1905 alone, the "flying wedge" play resulted in 22 deaths and an estimated 149 "serious" injuries. Newspapers printed body counts and took out full-page editorials calling for reform. Ever the hands-on president, Roosevelt called on the leading institutions to visit the White House. There, he used his "bully pulpit" to spur the creation of what is today called the National Collegiate Association of Athletics (NCAA) -- a body that began in the name of safety for college athletes. The flying wedge was outlawed as a result, but the play does exist today in a reduced form. Returning teams are allowed to form a "wedge" for the kick returner, and defenders who take on the formation are called "wedge busters." Look for it next time you watch a game, and marvel as nobody dies. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

With the New Year come new promises to eat better, lose weight, exercise and improve our health and well-being. The gluttony of the holidays combined with our good intentions for a new year have us redoing our grocery lists, our pantries and our diets. Some people are disciplined enough to eat modest amounts of whole foods. Others, however, appreciate more guidance, and that is when a structured meal plan can be of great value.
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice or organic apple cider vinegar Spiced Roasted Chickpeas for topping, optional, see recipe below
1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Rinse and drain the chickpeas, and dry by rolling them around in a kitchen towel. Combine the paprika, cumin, cayenne and salt in a large bowl. Add chickpeas and the oil; toss or stir to coat evenly. 3. Transfer chickpeas to a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread them out in a single layer. Bake 15 minutes, and then shake the tray so chickpeas will bake evenly. Depositphotos.com 1. KITCHEN DIVA'S DETOX SOUP Soaking the chia seeds in water makes them easier to digest, and their nutrients are better absorbed and assimilated in your body as they "sweep" through your intestinal system to eliminate the buildup of waste. 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil

The DASH Diet (which stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension") was developed through research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a way to lower blood pressure and reduce the use of medications. Studies dating back to its start in 1993 show that it's an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases. My recipe for The Kitchen Diva's Detox Soup is a nutrition-packed bowlful of goodness that's based on a DASH diet recipe. This soup has a high amount of potassium, iron and calcium, and is wonderful for cleansing your digestive system and ushing out toxins to kick start a healthier new year. It contains plant-based proteins, antioxidants and healthy fats, and best of all, you can eat it several times throughout the day, if desired.
1 teaspoon Spanish smoked paprika
2. Using a large pot, add the oil and heat over medium high heat. Add the onions, poultry seasoning, cumin and cayenne pepper to the stockpot and stir to combine. Cook the onions for 1 to 2 minutes, and add the garlic, broccoli, spinach, bell pepper, carrots and celery. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Stir in the chia seeds and water, and turn the heat to high. Bring the soup to a boil and then turn the heat down to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 12 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Stir in the parsley and the lemon, lime or apple cider vinegar.
4. Continue to bake chickpeas for another 10 to 12 minutes or until crunchy. Sprinkle some of the chickpeas on each bowl of soup. Allow any remaining chickpeas to cool on the pan and transfer them to a resealable plastic bag. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. * Buick is one of the oldest automobile brands in the world, so you might expect that the company's founder did pretty well for himself. Unfortunately for David Dunbar Buick, who incorporated the company in 1903, that wasn't the case. In less than a year, the company was sold. Buick stayed on as a manager and worked on engine development, but only for two more years. When he left his namesake company in 1906, he sold his one remaining share of Buick for $100,000. That was a rather hefty sum at the time, but he lost it all in a series of unsuccessful ventures. At the time of his death in early 1929, he was virtually penniless.
* The unknown soul who made the following sage observation must have been a keen observer of events: "A politician can appear to have his nose to the grindstone while straddling a fence and keeping both ears to the ground." * In the 17th century, a Frenchman opened a coffee shop in London and sold chocolate, newly imported from the Americas, for 10 to 15 shillings a pound. That may not sound like much until you learn that at the time, the going price of a pound gold was 20 to 30 shillings. * Are you interested in pogonotrophy? If you're a woman, the answer is probably no. The word, derived from the Greek word "pogon," or "beard," and the suffix "trophy," or nourishment, refers to the growing of a beard. * Most people realize that many places in the United States were once known by different names. Here's a sampling: the Potomac River was originally called Conococheague Creek, Camp David was named Shangri-La, and the USA itself was once known as the United States of Congress Assembled. * Good news for the not-so-neat among us: Making your bed could be bad for you. A study done in the United Kingdom at Kingston University showed that the linens of an unmade bed retain less moisture, therefore making them less attractive to dust mites.
* In Western cultures, the owl is associated with wisdom, but in some Asian countries, it's traditionally a symbol of stupidity.

* The ostrich is the world's only two-toed bird. * Evidently it's not just humans who associate a deeper voice with maturity (and desirability) in males. It seems that male owls try to appear more macho and attract females by lowering the tone of their hoots. *** Thought for the Day: "The cult of individual personalities is always, in my view, unjustified. To be sure, nature distributes her gifts variously among her children. But there are plenty of the well-endowed ones too, thank God, and I am firmly convinced that most of them live quiet, unregarded lives." -- Albert Einstein. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
* In the 9th century, a Norseman named Sigurd Eysteinsson earned the name Sigurd the Mighty while helping to lead the Viking conquest of what is now northern Scotland. As part of a continuing effort to expand his Scottish conquest, Sigurd challenged a native ruler, Mael Brigte the Bucktoothed, to a battle. Each leader was supposed to bring 40 men to the battle, but Sigurd broke his own rule and brought 80 warriors. Unsurprisingly, Brigte lost. After beheading his defeated foe, Sigurd displayed Brigte's head on his saddle as a trophy of war. He got his just desserts in the end, though; as he rode, Sigurd's leg was scratched by Brigte's buck teeth. The seemingly insignificant wound festered, and Sigurd the Mighty was killed by the infection. * You may already know that seahorses mate for life. You may not be aware, though, that as they swim, they keep their tails linked together. * Those who study such things say that Napoleon Bonaparte was partial to cashmere underwear. * Beards may be trendy these days, but if you prefer the clean-shaven look, you belong to a group that goes back further than you think. Cave art dating back to 10,000 B.C.E. depicts grown men with no beards.

gov) and search for Guide to Physical Activity. The chart will tell you how you can fit common chores into your exercise schedule. Washing and waxing a car qualifies, as do raking leaves and washing floors. If we have to get more exercise, we might as well get the household chores done at the same time, right?
Do you need an oversize washing machine, or will a smaller one be enough for the laundry you do now?
And before jumping into a strenuous exercise program, find out what your doctor thinks.
If you're in the market for a small appliance, you're better off considering it a disposable that you'll need to replace in a few short years.
STUDY: MILD EXERCISE JUST WON'T CUT IT
APPLIANCES NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE
(c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Some of us suspected it was too good to be true: that mild exercise of any type was good for us and helped us live longer. A new study shows that, unfortunately, we may be right.
Long gone are the days when our 15-year-old coffee pot died and we could confidently run to the store and buy another just like it. Things are different now. That coffee pot (or any other older appliance) might not be manufactured anymore, or at least not in any recognizable format. The brand names we used to trust either don't exist or have been bought and sold so many times that they're the same in name only.
New research out of Brigham Young University (published in Preventive Medicine journal) shows that we can slow the type of aging that happens in cells if we do intense exercise. (Not what I had in mind. How about you?) To quote from one of the study's principals: "The more physically active we are, the less biological aging takes place in our bodies." Specifically the study talks about telomeres. As we age, there is less telomerase in each cell, which counteracts the shortening of telomeres on our chromosomes. Without that telomerase, the telomeres wear down and cells wear out. High-activity exercise levels can give up to a nine-year biological-age advantage; moderate exercise nets us seven years. Translated into real terms, it means that women need to engage in physical cardiovascular activity 30 minutes a day. That's five days a week. For men it's 40 minutes. While there are benefits to light-to-moderate exercise, we would have to do it longer than the 30-40 minutes. For a list of moderate-intensity physical activity, go online to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute arm of National Institutes of Health (www.nhlbi.nih.
Today we have to hunt for simple machines that aren't programmable to do a dozen functions that we don't want. Where we used to get stainless steel, now we get plastic, which we have to research for BPA, a carcinogen. The life expectancy of small appliances has been cut to a mere few years. Large appliances are no different. Generally, your central air conditioners will last approximately 15 years, freezers 11 years, refrigerators 13 years and a washing machine 10 years. It used to be that you could add at least 10 years to those numbers. Nowadays before you buy, there are questions you need to ask yourself, often having to do with size and function rather than expectation of value and how long it will last. Do you really need a 12-cup coffee maker now, or will a small 4-cup model be enough?
When it's clear that it's time to buy, do your research. If you're about to spend money on a major appliance, a subscription to Consumer Reports might be worthwhile.

ANSWER: The kidney is capable of performing its two primary functions -- removing waste products and maintaining salt and water balance -- under a wide variety of conditions. In fact, a healthy set of kidneys can get rid of 40 liters of water daily. Even so, a high water load does cause the kidney to work hard, especially under the now-rare condition of minimal salt intake. Unfortunately, damaged kidneys sometimes cannot handle a high water load. I often get frustrated with the recommendation to drink a certain quantity of water, most commonly 8 cups a day. That amount is too much for some people, and not enough for others. Listening to your body and drinking when you are thirsty is, in general, a much better approach. There are some instances where drinking more water than you feel you need makes sense: in people with a history of kidney stones, for example. Some older people have inadequate thirst mechanisms, so an extra glass or two of water might be a good idea for them, and won't cause problems in most people. Your second question, about a "dropped" bladder, has nothing to do with the kidneys. Descent of the bladder -a type of pelvic organ prolapse -- is caused by changes in the pelvic floor, especially in older women who've had multiple childbirths.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent newspaper article suggested that mental and brain health might be improved by taking a small dose of lithium (5 mg) daily. What are your thoughts? -- R.B.L. ANSWER: Lithium is a light element found in trace amounts in the ground and in drinking water. It is used as a treatment in mental illnesses, especially bipolar disorder and occasionally in resistant cases of depression. Lithium requires skill in prescribing and monitoring, but it probably is underused, according to my colleagues in psychiatry. Lithium has a probably unwarranted bad reputation. I found the article you mentioned, by Dr. Anna Fels, and recalled studies that showed suicide, homicide and rape rates were higher in communities with low lithium levels, and I find this intriguing. People in higher-lithium areas also seemed to have lower dementia levels. However, much more research needs to be done before
heart failure symptoms had improved; his weight fell into a healthy range; his total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides fell from 201 to 137 mg/dL, 105 to 67 mg/dL, and 112 to 96 mg/dL, respectively. The authors further explore the body of evidence showing such diets are beneficial for heart disease patients.
VEGAN DIETS BENEFIT HEART HEALTH A vegan diet demonstrates the ability to prevent and treat heart failure, according to a case study and short literature review in the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology. In a new special issue of the journal entitled “A PlantBased Diet and Cardiovascular Disease,” researchers describe a case study where a 79-year-old man with heart disease refused the commonly recommended bypass and valve replacement surgery and opted to adopt a wholefoods, plant-based diet instead. After two months, his
COMPONENT IN ANIMAL PRODUCTS LINKED TO HEART DISEASE Choline, a nutrient found in meat and fish, may increase the risk for heart disease, according to a study published in Circulation. Eight participants who followed a vegetarian or vegan diet and 10 participants who followed an omnivorous diet took choline supplements for two months. Blood work from both groups showed elevated levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and increased platelet activation, both results associated with blood clotting. The participants who followed a vegan or vegetarian diet had lower levels of choline at the start, suggesting a diet with lower levels of nutrients linked to increased TMAO levels may provide a preventive effect.
I could recommend lithium as a supplement for brain health. By the way: The usual dose for lithium in people with psychiatric conditions is around 1,000 to 1,800 milligrams daily. The content in drinking water in some areas is as high as 0.17 milligrams per liter. Drinking about 6 liters a day would get you only a thousandth of the usual daily dose. I can't even speculate on what dose might be appropriate as a supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NURSES EXPERIENCE BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED DIETS A new publication in the American Journal of Nursing shows the benefits of plant-based diets for nurses and their patients. Nurses at three clinics adopted a plant-based diet with the Physician Committee’s 21-Day Kickstart program, supplemented with nutrition education that reviewed the health implications of the diet, and tracked their weight and cholesterol levels. Three-quarters of the participants lowered their total cholesterol levels (a mean drop of 18 points), and more than half of the participants lost an average of 4.4 pounds. Participants reported increased energy levels and overall satisfaction with the program. The authors note the participants now view plant-based diets as a practical treatment for disease prevention. 'KILROY WAS HERE' Remember hearing "Kilroy was here"? Kilroy is a famous "doodle" seen during World War II. No one is sure exactly where it began, but in about 1939, the comic man looking over a fence while poking his nose and hands over it with the words "Kilroy was here" started to appear. The doodles were found in strange places where soldiers were stationed. The character may have been inspired by an earlier bit of graffiti used by Australians during World War I with the words "Foo was here." He reappeared in the next war from 1941 to 1945. Kilroy graffiti was found in barracks, inside submarines, and, it is claimed, on the beaches at Normandy when the troops landed for the famous battle. "Kilroy was here," with or without the doodle, still is part of American slang and has appeared in TV shows, movies and even songs in this century. The face over the fence has been made into inexpensive three-dimensional, carnival chalkware figures and even banks. A red plaster bank was one of several Kilroy pop-art items featured in a Hakes auction in 2016. It sold for $168.37, probably to someone who remembers seeing a Kilroy message years ago. *** Q: I have several old one-cent prepaid postcards that are unused. The "stamp" on the postcard is green and pictures Thomas Jefferson. Do these postcards have any value? A: The postcards still can be used if you add enough stamps to equal the current postcard rate, which is 34 cents. However, they are worth more than face value to a collector. One-cent postcards were made from 1916 to 1952, except for two years during World War I when the rate was raised to two cents and for the years 1925 to 1928. The one-cent postcard was made on different cardstocks. Some are more valuable than others, and there are other

It took only a little over $160 to buy this "Kilroy was here" bank. The 5-inch-high plaster bank was painted red. The bottom had the words "To open, cut hole in bottom." It is a very rare souvenir of the Second World War. differences that affect prices, which range from about 25 cents to several thousand dollars. Most sell for under $1. Some of the rarest and most valuable postcards were printed on gray, rough-surfaced stock during a paper shortage in 1916. They were sold to printers for commercial use and weren't available at the post office. Rough-surfaced postcards sold recently for over $1,700 to $2,400. The die was recut because the stamp didn't make a good impression on the rough surface. Postcards stamped with Die II have sold for $18,500. A stamp dealer might be able to tell you what your postcards are worth. *** TIP: Antique-cut diamonds (old mine-cut) are being made today.
