At the time, doctors thought ulcers were caused by stress, smoking, and poor eating habits. But Dr. Marshall suspected ulcers were caused by a bacteria called H. pylori.

• Papers he wrote were roundly ridiculed by gastroenterologists. Unable to experiment on animals, and prohibited from experimenting on people, he did what he had to do: he isolated a culture of H. pylori from a patient who had an ulcer, mixed it with broth, and drank it. Within days he developed a stomach ulcer. When the ulcer was confirmed, he cured himself with antibiotics. • From there, he proved that every person who had a stomach ulcer also had H. pylori. He later developed a breath test that can tell if a person is suffering from an H. pylori infection. In 2005 he was awarded a Nobel Prize for his efforts.

I TOLD YOU SO (continued):

A BIG DITCH • In May of 1950, a catastrophic flood of the Red River in Manitoba, Canada, inundated the city of Winnipeg. Over 100,000 people had to be evacuated in the biggest evacuation in Canada’s history at the time. Duff Roblin was Manitoba’s Premier at the time and he decided the city should never again be subjected to such a flood.

(954) 779-3000 www.ThePremierSmile.com

• His solution was to dig a 29-mile long (47 km) ditch around the city, designed to divert excess water from the Red River in times of flood. The project cost $63 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to approximately $360 million today, and took 7 years to complete. It was the second largest earth-moving construction project in history, next to the building of the Panama Canal.

• Kotoko Wamura was a child in Japan when a 30foot (9m) tsunami swept away the town of Fudai. He remembered tales of a 50-foot (15m) tsunami that hit in 1896. So when he was elected mayor of Fudai in the 1960s, he insisted a 50-foot seawall be built to protect the town. People were outraged at the cost and angry that it blocked their view of the sea. Others argued that a 30-foot wall would be tall enough. But Kotoko Wamura held firm, and the seawall was built. He died in 1987 so he didn’t live to see the day in March of 2011 when his 50-foot seawall saved his beloved town.

• By the 1950s, evidence in favor of continental drift was beginning to accumulate. When sonar technology advanced to the point where the sea floor could be mapped, a big expanding rift was discovered in the Pacific. By the 1960s, the theory of plate tectonics was well developed, “Urkontinent“ was re-named Pangea, and Wegener was vindicated long after his death. • Today, the Alfred Wegener Medal is awarded by the Alfred Wegener Institute to researchers in the field of geoscience each year. With advances in GPS technology, the movement of the continents is now precisely tracked.

GET THE LEAD OUT • Duff Roblin’s opponents and constituents ridiculed the project, dubbing it “Duff’s Ditchâ€? and predicting it would never be useful. No sooner had it been completed than it was put into use, saving the city from flooding in 1968. Since then, it’s been used twenty more times, saving Winnipeg from floods over and over again. Experts estimate it’s saved over $100 billion in cumulative flood damage, making it an excellent investment indeed.

A BIG WALL

Tired Of Your Job? Want A New Career?

• Geologists all over the world ridiculed him. How could something as large as a continent move? What would cause the movement? Wegener hypothesized that the centrifugal force of the Earth’s rotation caused it, or astronomical influences, or a rift under the ocean that was spreading apart. His theories were almost universally rejected. He died on a polar expedition in 1930 without gaining recognition for this discovery.

A RESTLESS PLANET • Alfred Wegener was a German scientist born in 1880. His research showed that the rock strata and the fossil record on one edge of a continent matched the rock strata and fossil record on the opposing edge of another continent separated by thousands of miles of ocean. He noticed that the continents seemed to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle: the eastern edge of South America fit into the gap of the western edge of Africa; the coasts of Australia and India matched the coast of Antartctica on so on. • In 1912 he presented his hypothesis that all the continents had once been joined together in a single landmass that had drifted apart. He called the landmass “Urkontinentâ€? which is German for “primal continent,â€? and coined the term “continental drift.â€?

• Clair Patterson spent many years working as a chemist for the California Institute of Technology. He focused on working with lead, a heavy metal that is toxic when inhaled or ingested. • When uranium decays, it turns into lead. The halflife of uranium is over 4 billion years, so by measuring the decay of uranium/lead, scientist can estimate the age of minerals in the same sort of way carbon dating is used to measure the age of organic material. In 1956, Patterson was the first person to use uranium-lead dating to estimate the age of the Earth at 4.55 billion years, a figure that is still considered accurate. • The focus of Patterson’s career was tracking the geo-chemical evolution of the Earth. While measuring the chemicals in ice core samples taken from Greenland, he noted an alarming increase in the amount of lead that coincided with the date in the 1920s that gasoline companies began adding lead to gas in order to stop engines from knocking. When he compared the lead content of skeletons of people buried in the 1600s (none) to the amount of lead in the skeletons of people who had died recently (high), he became alarmed. He proved that after lead was added to gasoline, the amount of lead being deposited in the environment was 80 times greater than it had been previously. • In 1965, Patterson began a concerted effort to have lead removed from gasoline. Gasoline companies fought back hard. He was ridiculed and his research was disparaged. But his efforts paid off: lead was phased out of American gas products by 1986. • Patterson then led the charge to have lead removed from tin cans, and it was subsequently also removed from paint. • By the time Patterson died in 1995, the level of lead in the blood of Americans had dropped by 80%.

HOLLYWOOD — ABC has given the green light to "Household Name," which will bring Carol Burnett back to weekly television. Along with her hit variety series "The Carol Burnett Show" (1967-78), she had a recurring role on "Here's Lucy," with Lucille Ball, from 1969-1971 and had the short-lived "Carol Burnett & Company" in 1979. She produced and recurred in the "Mama's Family" spin-off (1983-84), starring Vicki Lawrence, and NBC gave her a shot with the anthology series "Carol & Co." from 1990-1991, but it couldn't find its audience. She had great success with the DVDs of her original variety show and has toured the country the past two years, taking questions from audiences just as she did in the opening of her original show. Burnett is in Julie Andrew's preschool Netflix series, "Julie's Greenroom," which she created with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton (the co-author of several children's books with Julie) and stars in. In addition to Carol, other guest stars are Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and David Hyde Pierce. It will be available for streaming March 17. Carol, who turns 84 in April, is an American treasure, and this new series, developed by Amy Poehler, in which a family gets to buy their dream house with the proviso they live with the previous owner ... an eccentric, largerthan-life actress, played by Carol. If her character sendup is like Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard," it definitely will be funny! *** Seasons 11 and 12 of "The Big Bang Theory" are a guaranteed lock, with its five original stars — Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar — again being paid $1 million an episode, and

Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik getting a huge pay raise. To sweeten the deal, CBS is letting Jim Parsons and "Bang" producers exec-produce the prequel "Sheldon," and Johnny Galecki exec-produce "Living Biblically," which has already been greenlighted to series. Also guaranteed a 10-show run, at ABC, are Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer" 2005-2013) and "Cosby" kid Malcolm-Jamal Warner in "Ten Days in the Valley," and Seth MacFarlane in the hour-long dramedy "Orville." There's also a spin-off from "The Goldberg's" starring Tim Meadows and Bryan Callen in the works, and "Desperate Housewives'" Felicity Huffman will be married to "People vs O.J.'s" Courtney Vance in "Libby & Malcolm." And get ready for a reboot of the hit nighttime soap "Dynasty" (1981-1989), still about the rivalry between the Carringtons and the Colbys. Crystal Carrington (played by Linda Evans) will be Hispanic this time and played by Nathalie Kelley (of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Body of Proof"). Crystal ... Hispanic? At least she'll have the money to keep the wall from being built! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Last year I saw a movie on cable that starred Jewel, the singer, and she solved a murder mystery. It was based on a book series, so I was wondering if they were planning to make the movies into a series. — Lyla F., via email A: You are talking about Hallmark Movies and Mysteries' "Fixer Upper Mysteries," which are based on best-selling author Kate Carlisle's book series. I am happy to report that because of record-breaking viewing numbers, there will be more installments coming your way. The second movie is "Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery," and it premieres Sunday, April 2, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. I spoke with Jewel recently about the series, and she is thrilled to return to the role of Shannon Hughes. "Shannon is a woman who once didn't trust her intuition, and it cost her very dearly with her mother, and she made a promise to herself to never ignore her intuition again. And her fight is really every woman's fight, every human's right, which is to speak up for your inner 'knowing' and what you know is right and act on that. It was so synergistic with the platform that I'm building (with jewelneverbroken.com), and getting to act a character who's actually trying to live the same thing was a real fun opportunity." Jewel also sees parallels between acting and being a singer/songwriter/poet: "While there are definitely different aspects of the craft, the way I find my way into it is pretty similar. I wasn't formally taught music; I taught myself guitar, and you teach yourself songwriting — same thing with poetry. I've always had an intuitive sense of looking inward, which came from my mindfulness practice and meditating from such a young age, and being curious and reading a lot. I was able to look inward to find my own authentic way. If you're willing to sit in the

Jewel Ryan Plummer

silence, be uncomfortable and look inward, you're going to find originality. I use my same skill set for looking inward and trusting my instincts." *** Q: Do you know when "Game of Thrones" will be back? Usually it's around April or May, but I haven't heard anything. — George A. in Rhode Island A: HBO has pushed back the premiere a few months. While there is not an exact date as of this writing, word has it that season seven will premiere in July. Don't forget, season seven will have only seven episodes, with the eighth and final season rumored to have just six. *** Q: A few months back, I heard about a new Bill Nye science show. Can you give me any more information on that? — Kelli T., via email A: "Bill Nye Saves the World" drops April 21 on Netflix. Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry. Then see the MayoClinic.org website and search for "Beans and other legumes: Cooking tips" for lots of ideas.)

INSTEAD OF DRUGS, TRY CHANGING DIET Several hospital systems in California are aiming to try food instead of drugs in a lot of cases to bring about good health. They're doing it in a very hands-on way: Doctors or nutritionists visit local grocery stores and give tours, answering questions about healthy food and giving away samples. Also onsite are free blood-pressure checks, while medical staff point out the correlation between high blood pressure and salty foods. They call the program Shop with Your Doc. If you're not in California, there are still things you can do. Take a good look at your diet for foods you can eliminate or swap. Veggies and berries are healthy in multiple ways (try frozen berries in a morning smoothie), and so are whole grains like brown rice, pasta and whole-wheat bread. Did you know the oil in avocados can help low-

The next time your doctor hands you a prescription slip to treat a condition, ask him if there is anything you can do with your diet that would eliminate the need for the drug. You might start by asking if he attends the annual Food as Medicine Symposium. If he says yes, he'll know just what you're talking about when you wonder about substituting food for drugs. If not, you'll have an opportunity to tell him about it.

If one of the connections is in an interesting city, consider whether you're willing to stay over one night or even two. Ask if you can get a free stopover. Also ask if the airline offers a senior discount. Many do. If you're more interested in going to one place and staying there, rather than traveling around, book your reservations now. All-inclusive resorts are big, and if relaxing and being waited on hand and foot is your idea of a great vacation, you have many to choose from. If a relaxing train trip is more what you had in mind, check the senior discounts on Amtrak (www.amtrak. com). Book early, and save on its popular routes: Crescent, Empire Builder, California Zephyr and more. Get an early start on your packing and to-do lists, too. For starters, jot down cellphone charger, medications, pet-care arrangements, health-insurance card, camera and charger, and emergency contact information.

DEAR DR. ROACH: It would be helpful if you described some of the warning signs/symptoms of a bad hip that requires replacement. I now know that such a condition does not necessarily announce itself with chronic severe pain in the hip. Indeed, what sent me to the doctor was a recurrent pain in my groin. My hip was relatively pain-free, and even then I had only a mild discomfort that I thought was simply some arthritis. What I failed to appreciate over the past few years was the very gradual loss of my range of motion, leading to difficulty with simple activities, such as tying my right shoe or cutting my toenails. In retrospect, I feel rather foolish that I did not realize sooner that I was having hip problems. Perhaps you can alert others to the signs of gradual hip degeneration that fall short of acute hip pain. — B.A. ANSWER: You have done a lot of the work for me. The groin is the most common location for pain from hip osteoarthritis, but other locations — especially pelvis and knee — all can be coming from the hip. We suspect arthritis when pain is worse after activity and improves with rest. But it is the range of motion and pain with movement that we as internists look for on exam to help us decide whether the complaints are likely from the hip joint or from another location. Pain is common with internal rotation (such as placing the outside of your ankle on the opposite knee and letting the elevated knee fall to the side). I think the main message is that pain in the hip or groin, especially if worse with exercise, suggests arthritis, and an X-ray can confirm the diagnosis. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. ROACH: I always have nitroglycerin with me, as I have heart disease. If I see someone having a heart attack, can I give them one? — J.G. ANSWER: I applaud your civic-mindedness, but you should not give out nitroglycerine. It is an extremely powerful medication that should be used only when sure of the diagnosis. I recall the chief resident during my training warning a fellow intern that he needed to do a careful exam before giving nitroglycerine, because it can be fatal in people with severe aortic stenosis, a blockage in one of the heart valves. It made quite an impression on me. Trained first-responders carry aspirin, nitroglycerine and oxygen for heart attack victims. The key is to get the person to definitive medical care as soon as possible. I do recommend that everyone who is physically capable of providing CPR learn to do so. You can save the life of a loved one or a total stranger. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old and lived on a boat in my 40s. Now, whenever I go to the dermatologist (two to three times each year), he "zaps" me about 20 times and burns off "cancer cells" or maybe "potential cancer cells." Some of them have been cancer and were healed with MOHS procedure. While I am grateful for the care he gives me, I also sometimes feel that he zaps because each zap means more money. Can you please clarify this for me? — G.B. ANSWER: I often get questions like this, where a patient has a concern that their doctor is performing unnecessary medical care for the purpose of enriching himself

or herself. I always have trouble believing it, since I can't really imagine it, but I recently read about an oncologist pleading guilty to treating with chemotherapy people who didn't really have cancer, which shakes my faith in my profession (and colleagues).

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother lives in Florida. Her major discomfort is fatigue and no energy. I have asked her doctor to please give her a vitamin B-12 injection, even though her B-12, thyroid function, vitamin D and blood count are all in the normal range. Her doctor does not believe in B-12 injections. Do you think it might help? — J.L. ANSWER: Vitamin B-12 is necessary for proper function in many tissues, but it is critical for blood cell production and neurologic function. B-12 deficiency causes an unmistakable anemia (called megaloblastic anemia) and can cause neurologic and psychiatric disturbances even in some people with no anemia. The blood test for B-12 is quite reliable. The major cause of B-12 deficiency is an autoimmune disease that prevents the stomach from making intrinsic factor, which is necessary for efficient absorption of B-12. B-12 can be absorbed orally by people with pernicious anemia by taking very high doses, such as 1 mg. This gives as good a replacement as injection. It was common 50 years ago to give B-12 injections as a "tonic." However, it offers no advantages for people with normal B-12 levels beyond the placebo response. As I have noted many times, the placebo response can be very powerful, and 1 mg of B-12 orally is very safe. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard that drinking water with your meal is bad for you. Is this true? And if so, why? I have a dry mouth due to cancer treatment and must have water with everything I eat. Is something bad going to happen to me? I am otherwise healthy. — R.G. ANSWER: It's not true at all. Water is, generally speaking, the healthiest drink. It is possible to drink too much water, but it's very hard to do so unless you are taking medications that affect your kidneys or you have excess anti-diuretic hormone, an unusual medical condition. Keep drinking your water.

Atlantic City, you may have heard, has an image problem. The city used to have 16 casinos, and through attrition, now has seven. It's a small town, out on an island, with about 40,000 residents. It has one of the largest unemployment rates in the country, and nearly one-third of the town makes ends meet under the poverty line. There are more strip clubs than grocery stores.

BET ON SPORTS There are foolish things to do ... like, say, hitting the snooze button one too many times or eating too much chocolate or having unprotected sex. None of those things, however, comes close to the most foolish thing you can do: trying to drink a coffee on an Atlantic City Jitney bus. For the uninitiated, the "Jitney" is a small bus that seats 13 people and costs $2.25 per trip around town. According to folklore, "jitney" meant "nickel," and that's what

On the plus side, it's where the boardwalk and salt water taffy were invented, and it's the longtime home of the Miss America pageant. When you play Monopoly, all of the street names are real Atlantic City streets. And, yes, it still has plenty of casinos, the booze is free, and it hosts world-class entertainment (Frankie Valli and bunch of other big shots call it home) and some of the best restaurants and shopping in the world. One of the town's great hobbies is chatting about what can be done to "revitalize" the place. Ideas abound. A water park in one of the old casinos, legalized marijuana or a Ferris wheel are always bandied about. Some want to attract college campuses and others want to legalize

For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237 prostitution. As if the town needed more vice. What Atlantic City really needs is sports. I was lucky enough to score tickets to a boxing match at Bally's the other day. Five fights for $50, ringside seats because the woman I met outside had comps and extra tickets. It was great. And it didn't take long for a few of the old-timers in the audience to reminisce about the old days ... when Mike Tyson fought his way to belts in the 1980s, when MMA started up in the '90s. This is a town with great transportation: a train and bus hub, a great airport where flights can cost as little as $9. It boasts an empty minor-league baseball stadium, and despite all of the competition with one-off casinos in Philly, Delaware and Connecticut, those places are boring. No, in order to revitalize AC, the city has to turn to the other side of gaming: sports. Evander Holyfield is starting a boxing "league" and plans on marketing it and conducting fights in AC. Dana White has plans to bring the UFC back to town. Rumor has a horse park coming to town. Now, if only the state can get its act together and legalize sports betting — a no-brainer — it will reap untold benefits. This has to be done. Atlantic City may be Mos Eisley come to life, but that shouldn't mean you can't bet on the Rangers-Flyers game. Give it a whirl, AC ... it won't be the first time you dared to be different. If your comics are from the Adventure Series and produced by Toby Press during the winter of 1949, the two you have could be quite valuable. For example, some of the titles and values are Mysterious Valley ($2,200), Flying Sheriff ($1,000), Duel of Death ($900) and Double Cross ($400). As with most collectibles, condition is extremely important. For example, if you have Mysterious Valley but the cover is worn and there are marked or missing pages, it would be worth a fraction of $2,200.

Incidentally, DeGrazia could be a little cranky. When he got into a dispute with the IRS, he took a large collection of his paintings and burned them in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix.

To sell you might contact Heritage Comics, 3500 Maple Avenue, 17th Floor, Dallas, TX 75219; 214-528-3500. *** Q: I have about 30 DeGrazia figures from his "Wistful Children" collection. Are they worth anything and, if so, where can I sell then? — Marie, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: The page you sent me already had values marked on it, so that part of your question has already been answered. To sell them might take a little time and patience. You could begin by checking the values on eBay. DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun also is a good resource. The gallery's

I cut it up into large rectangles, and made a small hole in the center of each. I slipped them over the few hanging jackets we have in our hall closet. * To clean terra cotta pots for new plants, follow these steps: Use a plastic brush to remove large dirt chunks and stuck-on materials. Soak pots in a 25 percent vinegar solution for 20 minutes. Scrub with a plastic scrubbie and rinse. If all deposits are gone, clean with soapy water and put out to dry. If not, resoak in vinegar. DEAR KURT: It sounds like a great option. Of course, as a pet-care adviser, I'm a little bit partial to the idea. But I also can tell you that pets not only enrich our lives, but enrich the lives of our neighbors in subtle ways, too. A new study reported in Scientific American found that people with pets are more likely to get to know other people in the neighborhood, and those relationships have more substance than casual "hellos."

BREAKFAST BAR NONE! I must admit, I love breakfast foods. Typically, I make breakfast for myself and my husband every morning. He's always in a rush, and sometimes he says he doesn't have time to sit down and eat. In that case, I create a "fast food" breakfast using fresh, healthy ingredients that he can eat at his desk. Eating breakfast daily may lead to a healthier weight. A healthy, high-fiber breakfast is more conducive to weight control than one loaded with fat, sugar and calories. "People think skipping breakfast helps lose weight; however, it actually works just the opposite," says Lynda Johnson, a nutrition specialist. "Breakfast skippers often end up starved, then snack on high-calorie foods or overeat at lunch." In recent years, nutritional studies show that starting your day with breakfast benefits people of all ages, especially children. Kids who regularly eat breakfast are more likely to be successful in school. Well-nourished children are ready to learn, have a greater ability to focus on tasks, have better classroom behavior and have improved test scores. Breakfast eaters also tend to have better school attendance, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomach aches. Teachers say it's obvious when students skip breakfast. Why are we so likely to skip breakfast? Johnson suggests solutions to these typical excuses that may be keeping you or your children from eating a healthy breakfast. —"I'm not hungry in the morning." In actuality, you may have conditioned your body not to be hungry. After fasting for 12 hours or more while

sleeping, your body needs nourishment to function at its best. Over time, you will recondition your body to expect breakfast. —"I don't have time to fix breakfast." There are lots of portable options that you can easily pack and eat on the way to school or work that can be prepared the night before. By taking time to plan the night before, you can prepare a nutritious breakfast and skip the expense of a fast-food meal.

BANANA OAT BREAKFAST BARS 2 large, very ripe bananas 1 tablespoon agave syrup or sugar substitute

On Saturdays, teach your children to become self-reliant and responsible by helping them to prepare their own breakfast. I’ve mastered the art of creating breakfast dishes that can be prepared in advance. Try my recipe below for Banana Oat Breakfast Bars. These nutritious bars are a delicious way to start your day!

4. Pat the thick mixture evenly into prepared baking pan. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons nuts. Bake for 30 minutes or until the edges just begin to crisp up and turn a golden brown.

1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg or cinnamon

—"My kids eat SO slow. I'd be late for work every day, so we skip breakfast!" Most public schools serve breakfast, which works well for many families. Cost is minimal or free for eligible families, and the convenience is great. Check with your school district and sign up your kid for the school breakfast program. Even if you don't eat breakfast at home, you can still be a healthy role model by packing a breakfast for yourself to take to work.

3. Mix in the agave syrup or sugar substitute, vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon, and salt. Add the oats and stir until well-combined. Stir in dates, raisins or craisins, and 1/4 cup of the nuts.

5. Place baking pan on a rack to cool. When the pan is mostly cool, cut into 9 squares.

1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup pitted, chopped dried dates, raisins or craisins 1/4 cup chopped nuts — such as walnuts, almonds or pecans, plus 2 tablespoons for sprinkling 1. Heat oven to 350 F, and lightly grease a 9- by 9-inch-square baking dish with butter or butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. Peel bananas and blend in a blender or food processor until liquid and no large chunks remain. You will have between 1 cup and 1 1/4 cup. Pour mixture into a medium-sized bowl.

6. Cover and store leftover bars at room temperature. They will keep for about 5 days. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! * It was beloved 20th-century English novelist, journalist and critic Eric Arthur Blair -- better known as George Orwell -- who made the following sage observation: "Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed; everything else is public relations." * You probably know that "fuzz" has been a common slang term for police, but did you ever wonder why? It began in the United Kingdom, where police officers in London sometimes wore fuzzy hats. * As St. Patrick's Day approaches, you might want to remember that the color originally associated with the Apostle of Ireland was blue, not green.

* It was award-winning American author Ann Patchett who made the following sage observation: "The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived." * It was 20th-century American author and playwright Rose Franken who made the following sage observation: "Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly." * There are only three places in the world that include St. Patrick's Day among their official public holidays: Ireland (of course), the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. * It's not clear exactly how they do it, but, according to those who study such things, bald eagles mate while they're in midair. * Do you ever get to the end of a relaxing weekend, only to feel depressed at the prospect of heading back to work Monday morning? Well, the Germans have a word for that: sonntagsleerung. It literally means "Sunday emptying."

* In 1861, when a group of Unionist counties decided they didn't want to be part of Virginia any more, West Virginia became the only state formed by breaking away from a Confederate state. That wasn't the only attempt, however; a group of citizens in northern Alabama and eastern Tennessee wanted to band together and form a new state that would be allied with the Union. Unfortunately for this pro-Unionist faction, plans for the wouldbe state of Nickajack never came to fruition. * Are you a coddiwompler? You are if you sometimes travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination. * At the time of its completion in 1885, the Washington Monument, at 555 feet, was the tallest building in the world. The cornerstone had been laid on July 4, 1848, but insufficient funds and other interruptions repeatedly delayed the work. When the monument finally opened to the public in October 1888, visitors could take a 10-minute steam-powered elevator ride to the top. During the last 12 years of the 19th century, more than 1.5 million people visited. * Hibernation doesn't always happen in cold weather; warm-weather hibernation, known as estivation, is common among some species of lizards, turtles and snails. ***

* Some historians claim that President Andrew Jackson believed the world was flat. * If it could avoid its inevitable dissipation, the typical cloud could circumnavigate the earth in less than two weeks.

Thought for the Day: "The radical novelty of modern science lies precisely in the rejection of the belief ... that the forces which move the stars and atoms are contingent upon the preferences of the human heart." — Walter Lippmann

* In the United States, nuns have a longer life expectancy than any other demographic group.
