• An idiom is “a set expression of two or more words that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words.” The idioms we’ll explore in this Tidbits are those that deal with animals.

• Watch these pages like a hawk (carefully) to see if you recognize these sayings. You may find that many are very familiar to you. You may also find some that are complete hogwash (nonsense). In trying not to beat a dead horse (engage in pointless and repetitive discussion), you may want to read these at a snail’s pace (slowly) so that you can catch the meaning of each sentence!

• An expression that seems to have disappeared or just never caught on with current generations is “I’ll swan” or “I’ll swanee!” Mostly used in the south, this is an expression of surprise probably as a replacement for “I swear” or a curse word. If you’ve never heard this one you probably think it is for the birds (not for you.)! After all, birds of a feather flock together, (people associate with similar folks)!

CAT & MOUSE (continued): • Sometimes supervision is in the hands of the biggest frog in the pond (most important person in a group), while at other times it may be given to the leader who is as calm as a toad in the sun (calm and content). Either way, if there is conflict, it may be necessary to separate the sheep from the goats (distinguish the good from the bad).

• When conflict arises, there are times when people act like animals. A dumb cluck (person acting stupid) may be pigheaded (stupidly stubborn) and try to find a scapegoat (innocent person who is blamed) when things go wrong.

• A bullheaded (obstinate) person may try to butt heads (to argue fiercely) with a sheepish (embarrassed) friend only to find that she will pull the wool over his eyes ( fool him).

• It is easy to get fleeced (swindled) if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to you and just ignore obvious problems. If you make yourself a sitting duck (easy target) you may end up in a harebrained scheme (foolish plan).

• It is much better to have all your ducks in a row (be organized), than to go down a rabbit hole (enter a fantasy world) when you need to make decisions.

• Hold on if you think we are barking up the wrong tree (have the wrong idea), fantasy worlds can be fun and engaging. Just remember that it’s a dog-eat-dog world (there is a lot of competition in life) out there and you need to be careful not to be constantly chasing your own tail (working hard but not getting anything done)!

• If organizing gives you a burr under your saddle (causes you to be irritated), remember that the early bird gets the worm (start early so that you have the best chance for success).

• Seeing an opportunity to improve your life or your situation, sometimes requires walking on eggshells (being careful not to offend others) or a somewhat opposite situation; taking the bull by the horns (tackling the problem).

• You sure don’t need to be told that you are not the sharpest quill on the porcupine (not very smart) if you are having a hard time with an assignment. Most people realize when they struggle and have butterflies in their stomachs (feel nervous) when they have bitten off more than they can chew (taken on too hard or big a task).

bear (really hungry), it is usually best to take your time eating anyway. Don’t be silly and wolf down your food (eat too fast) or you may find yourself sick as a horse (very sick)!

• Hold your horses (be patient) when you need to wait for your food, whether at your home, someone else’s home or a restaurant. Be a good egg (nice person) not a bad egg (bad person) and avoid fighting like cats and dogs (fierce argument). Don’t bite the hand that feeds you (harm someone who is helping you)!

• Take the bull by the horns (face difficulty) when you are strong and can rule the roost (be the boss), but don’t get egg on your face (be humiliated) by taking on more than you can handle. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch (don’t plan on having something until you actually get it)!

• If things are going well in your family or work life, don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs (don’t destroy the source of your good fortune). Be thankful and don’t ruffle any feathers (don’t upset anyone) or you may find yourself eating crow (having to admit that you are wrong). Remember birds of a feather flock together (similar people stick together).

• Don’t be a fraidy cat (a coward) when it comes to trying new things. Carefully weigh the risks and wing it (improvise) as you are learning. If you get sent on a wild goose chase (to be sent searching for something that can’t be found), then learn from your search.

• It is better to let the cat have your tongue (be quiet) than to pretend to be a fat cat (rich and powerful person) when you really have nothing to brag about. After all, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray (even careful plans can go wrong).

• Many times in our everyday lives the weather can be an influencing factor in our decision making. If it is raining cats and dogs outside (raining hard) then we are likely to be as happy as a clam (contended) staying at home reading a good book or watching a movie. If the sun is shining and it is nice and warm out, we are likely to go out to have a whale of a time (great enjoyment).

CELINE DION Born into a musically gifted family, Celine Dion is the youngest of 14 children. Her parents were both musicians and raised their children to be involved with music as well.

• Celine Marie Claudette Dion was born on March 30, 1968, in the rural French Canadian town of Charlemagne, Quebec, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Montreal. Celine’s parents were the operators of a small club where the entire family performed on weekends.

• Celine composed a French song, along with her mother and one of her brothers, when she was only twelve. When the demo tape with that song wound up in the hands of René Angélil, a personal manager, the course of Celine’s life was forever changed.

• Amazed by Dion’s voice, Angélil was intent on making Celine famous in January, 1981.

He mortgaged his own home to finance the recording of Celine Dion’s debut album!

• By 1982, Dion was receiving international attention. She won the Gold Medal at the Yamaha World Song Festival in Tokyo in 1982.

Her first English language album was recorded in 1990, containing the hit single, Where Does My Heart Beat Now. • The real breakthrough album that propelled Dion to international stardom was her second English album, recorded in 1992, The album, Celine Dion, featured the theme song for Disney’s animated hit, Beauty and the Beast. She and Peabo Bryson, chosen to sing the duet, were rewarded with the hit reaching worldwide audiences.

• Celine Dion, became Dion’s first gold record in the U.S. and more than 12 million copies were sold internationally. She has earned awards from all over the world: Juno

and Felix Awards in Canada, Grammys in the U.S., and many more.

• Dion announced at a New Years’ Eve 1999 concert that she would be taking some time off to start a family. She and husband, René, welcomed a baby boy, René-Charles Angélil, into their lives on January 25, 2001. After a two-year absence, Celine released a new album, “A New Day Has Come” in March, 2002.

• Dion began a three-year contract to appear at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in March, 2003. Her commitment was to appear five nights a week in The Colosseum, built especially for her and her show, “A New Day.” The 90-minute show was a “fusion of song, performance art, theatrical innovation and state-of-the-art technology.”

The theater cost approximately $95 million!

• On October 23, 2010, Dion gave birth to twin boys, Nelson and Eddy. The mother of 3 boys returned to the stage in Las Vegas on March 15, 2011.

• Her new show features her biggest hits as well as classics from other artists. There is a full orchestra and band and 31 other musicians are featured in the 4,300 seat venue. Within a month of her return to Caesars Palace, the new show climbed to the #1 spot on Billboard’s Boxscore chart, which lists the top grossing concerts in North America.

• Dion released her first English album in six years, Loved Me Back to Life, on November 5, 2013. Celine is the bestselling Canadian artist of all time and the second bestselling female artist in the United States.

UP FROM THE GROUND Springtime is a welcome time of year when the grass turns green and bulbs spring to life with colorful flowers. There are also other plants that spring up as the air and ground warms for the pleasure of people and animals!

• Crocus are among the first flowers to burst from their bulbs in spring when the ground gets warm.

From “snow” crocuses, which are the first to bloom, to giant Dutch crocuses, the flowers brighten gardens in a variety of colors: red, pink, purple, blue, yellow, orange and more.

Even though the latter are called “giant,” all crocuses are small, between 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) tall.

Some have strong scents that lure bees out of their hives as early as February to start their honey-making process.

• Crocus means cheerfulness.

Appropriately named, the little blooms are rarely bothered by deer, rabbits and squirrels.

Snow and freezing temperatures can sometimes stop the blooms, leaving the greenery to peek out alone. Also, fall-blooming crocuses reappear in the spring but without their flowers.

• Some other small flowers that may sprout from bulbs even before crocus are: glory-of-thesnow, winter aconite, common snowdrop, spring slowflake and netted iris. (Notice: 3 of the 4 early bloomers have names associated with winter!)

• Along with the bulbs planted in yards, ephemeral wildflowers are beginning to pop up in forests all around North America at this time of year. Ephemeral means “short-lived.”

For the spring flowering ephemerals, they make an appearance as soon as the weather is warm, leaf out, bloom, spread a little and go dormant when hot weather intrudes. Spring ephemerals prefer damp areas like stream banks.

• Ephemeral wildflowers, as a group, make up one of the largest types of wildflowers. Unseen by many, they appear and disappear quickly. The small, colorful plants take advantage of sunlight that comes into forested areas before leaves grow on the trees over their heads. Once the leaves block the sunshine, the glorious display of little flowers goes away!

• With strange common names such as Skunk Cabbage, Bloodroot, Cutleaved Toothwort, Dutchman’s Breeches and Trout Lily, many of these plants emerge in April and are gone by May or early June. They emerge again each spring and if the ground has not been disturbed, usually in larger, more colorful numbers.

• Skunk cabbage is an ephemeral with an odor of rotten meat. It has the strange ability to raise the temperature inside its flowers to cause snow to melt around it.

• A more pleasant ephemeral that is nice to have in a home garden is Dutchman’s Breeches. The cute little white flowers resemble pantaloons blowing in the wind.

• Trout Lily is so-named for its timing to bloom when trout are running or spawning. Trout fishermen love to discover these little blooms!

• Trilliums always have 3 leaves, 3 petals and 3 sepals. Most of these are native to the United States.

They are a favorite snack for deer so their little blooms sometimes disappear quickly. Trilliums, as

Speaking of "Grey's Anatomy," Isaiah Washington is set to return to the series as Dr. Preston Burke for an episode in May. The show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, told "The Wrap" that Isaiah's character is vital to tying up the story of Sandra Oh's character, Cristina Yang. Shonda revealed: "It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should. There's some grim news for those of us who aren't active. A study out of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago found that if we're over the age of 60, every hour in a day that we sit increases our risk of becoming disabled -- by 46 percent.

But it gets worse. Even if we're active at other times, it

For the purposes of the study, researchers defined "disabled" as not being able to take care of our needs -- the activities of daily living, such as getting dressed. Most of the participants spent about nine hours a day sitting.

The study looked at the level of moderate to vigorous activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate exercise is effort rated as a 5 or 6 on a scale of 0 to 10. Vigorous exercise is a 7 or 8 on that scale. One minute of vigorous activity equals two minutes of moderate activity. The study found that exercising for even 10

HOLLYWOOD -- Just about every talk-show host and news commentator made fun of John Travolta mispronouncing Idina Menzel's name on the Academy Awards show. What really happened? During my first photo-shoot with Travolta in 1970, just before "Welcome Back, Kotter" went on the air, he overlapped the buttons on one of his sleeves as he posed for photos. When they were printed, as full-page pinups, they clearly showed how he overlapped his buttons. It sparked a fashion trend that millions of teenage fans copied. I suspected then, that like Tom Cruise and other actors, he was dealing with some form of dyslexia.

As he approached Idina's name, he stumbled over the word "wickedly," referring to her Tony Award performance in "Wicked" as "The Wicked Witch of the West." Fiber Can Reduce Colorectal Cancer Risk High-fiber diets help reduce your risk of colorectal cancer, according to a review published this month in the Gastroenterology.

Study Shows Many Medical Students Follow Vegetarian Diets A study shows that many medical students now follow vegetarian diets, and that these students had better health and improved nutrition compared with their non-vegetarian classmates. Emory University researchers examined the prevalence of vegetarian diet patterns among nearly 900 medical students and found that 7.2 percent of students identified themselves as vegetarians. This number declined slightly throughout the years of medical school, paralleling an overall decline in positive health-related habits among doctors in training. Vegetarians were also more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables than non-vegetarians.

HEAD AND EAR NOISE DRIVES PEOPLE CRAZY DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have tinnitus. It sounds like roaring in my head. I take gabapentin for it. Do you know of anything else for it? -- E.A. ANSWER: You have an affliction that would drive me crazy -- tinnitus, a constant noise in one or both ears or the head that people describe in a variety of ways as ringing, whistling, buzzing,

hissing or roaring. An estimate of the number of Americans suffering from tinnitus (TIN-uh-tiss or tuh-NITE-iss) is somewhere between 16 million and 60 million.

Tinnitus mostly happens to older people whose hearing is diminishing. Why tinnitus arises in them is explained by the fact that head noises are generated constantly.

Should I be? -- B.S. ANSWER: Since scans have become so routinely a part of medical practice, liver cysts are seen quite frequently. Most liver cysts neither cause pain nor upset liver function. No one is sure why they form. Unless they are large or are causing symptoms, they can be left alone.

Trouble-making liver cysts do exist. Some parasite infections cause them. Those cysts almost always produce symptoms that call for treatment. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I recently read several articles about the use of food-grade hydrogen peroxide. I am interested in using it for prostate and urinary tract problems. Are there real benefits from it? -- J.C.

ANSWER: Concentrations of 1.5 percent hydrogen peroxide are used by some as a mouthwash and at 1.5 percent to 3 percent as a wound cleaner. The same doses are used to remove wax from the ear canal.

I can't find any confirmation of the benefit of using food-grade hydrogen peroxide for prostate or urinary tract problems. I would not encourage you to use it. Food grade is a very high concentration.

How? Well, yelling or getting excited yourself when Bailey jumps up will likely do nothing, or even make

SEE IT ON THE RADIO Legendary New York radio sports-talk announcer Art Rust Jr. used to have a favorite saying: "I saw it on the radio."

Baseball translates better on radio than any other sport. In fact, I would argue that baseball is better on radio than it is on TV. Let's face it, the action in baseball comes in 60, 90 and 400 feet bursts. During a three-hour game there may be, on average, less than an hour's worth of action.

And even if there's a guy with a dramatic curveball on the mound like Zack Greinke, in most parts of the stadium you can't

really tell what he's throwing. In the park, the focus is on the outcome of a pitch, rarely is it about the mechanics.

On TV, fans get the familiar centerďŹ eld camera view. While this allows you to see the pitch and its velocity and arc, it's really an unnatural view, as most people have never watched a game from that angle, that far away. And while it lets you see the batter swing, the best way to take in a batter's swing is from the side.

Lastly, that view does not allow you to see the position of the ďŹ elders or the lead of the runners. Granted, great production crews will have extra cameras and offer you brief

glimpses, but the experience just never really clicked with viewers and that, probably more than anything, led to football's dominance on TV. Fans appreciated the speed and ďŹ eld views in ways that sharply contrasted the experience to baseball.

Not so on the radio. On the radio, the attention is on the details. A good announcer -- of which there are many -- adheres to the storytelling tradition during a classic baseball broadcast. They will announce the starting lineups rather than just posting it on your screen, they will describe the details of the uniforms, the atmosphere in the park, and you will better hear the pop of the ball in the catcher's

LATE FILING TAXES? YOU'RE NOT ALONE If you haven't filed your taxes yet, you're not alone. One quarter of Americans wait until the last two weeks to get taxes done and filed.

At this point, you have a choice: get them done quickly and file before April 15, or ask for an extension.

If you want to get it over with and do your taxes now, you'll need to gather your W-2 or 1099 forms, 1099 statements for interest, Social Security number, and your pile of receipts if you plan to deduct expenses, Medical Savings Account information, self-employed health insurance and home-office costs, and real-estate taxes.

Decide if you'll use a tax preparer. If so, make a call right away to be sure there's still time in what's likely to be a busy schedule. You'll likely save money if you do the organizing yourself, but be sure you have time to get that done before accepting the appointment.

If you want to do your taxes yourself with a computer software program, read the details online for programs like TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxACT. Be sure your computer is powerful enough to handle the software by reading the requirements before you buy.

Most of the programs are easy enough to follow. Some are better than others when it comes to assistance if you get into a jam. TurboTax, for example, has an online question and answer area where you can search for similar questions others have asked, or you can ask your own question.

If this is your first time using computer tax software, be sure to get the program updates. Follow the steps and let the program ask you questions, even if they don't seem to apply. Go through all the steps, entering information as you go. At the end you'll be asked if you want to print out the return to be mailed or if you want to e-file.

If for some reason there's just no way you'll get your taxes completed on time, you can file for a sixmonth extension. Beware: This is an extension to file your complete return, not to pay the taxes you owe. Failing to file will get you a penalty. Failing to pay on time gets you penalties and interest and scrutiny from the Internal Revenue Service. You'll need Form 4868 (available to print out at www.irs. gov) to request a filing extension and to pay your estimated tax due.

After the lesson, students will break up into groups and make their own anti-tobacco themed sand art. The event will serve as an interactive learning experience for children who are the primary users of the park.

A group of judges will name the winning sand art creations and the winners will receive gift cards and certificates.

Prior to the sand art event, students will participate in a cigarette butt clean-up at North Ocean Beach Park to learn the importance of tobacco free parks and beaches.

RENTER FACED WITH GRIMY, RUSTY STOVE Q: I recently moved into a small apartment, and while the stove is old, it seems to work fine.

Trouble is, when I lifted the stove lid to clean it, there was about an inch of greasy grime and rust.

It's impossible to get completely clean, and I'm kind of worried about a grease fire starting. What can I do to get my stove back in shape? -- Clara in Tampa, Fla. A: Talk to your apartment manager or landlord.

While tenants are expected to keep the apartment's appliances clean, it's nei-

ther fair nor safe to deal with a stove that is unreasonably dirty.

The manager may counter that you accepted the apartment with the appliances listed in good working condition, but I know very few people who have the time or wherewithal to pry open the stove hood and check the burners underneath during a tour or a final walk-through.

At the very least, insist that the manager help you clean the stove. That doesn't mean buying you a can of oven cleaner; it means sending a maintenance person to assess the situation and find a safe way to clean it, or scheduling a contractor to clean and maintain the appliance.

If the stove is too difficult to clean, if it's rusting through or otherwise not in safe condition, most leases allow the management to replace it with an acceptable appliance.

If the manager agrees to do this, get that pledge in writing along with an approximate date that the appliance will be replaced.

What if the manager or landlord refuses to do any of these things? Look up your state's statute by typing tenant/landlord law and the name of your state in a search engine

That said, you can accomplish a heck of a lot just by being polite and working with the manager or landlord to find a solution. It's hard to react negatively to a tenant asking, "Hey, I want to keep my apartment clean and I need some help getting the stove up to snuff, can you help?" Although there are some nightmare landlords out there, most like keeping the value of their properties up and appreciate tenants helping to keep them there.

HOME TIP: To clean a stubborn stain from a standard (enamel) stovetop, mix equal amounts of table salt, baking soda and water (about a tablespoon each) and scrub the mixture over the stain with a soft cloth.
