• In the good old days, the time of day varied by one minute for every 13 miles (21 km) traveled east to west. Noon was whenever the sun was overhead any particular town. Cities only a few hundred miles apart had times that were quite different. This didn’t matter much when people rarely traveled more than a few miles from home. But when railroads started transporting people long distances, things got complicated. It made scheduling trains hard.

• When it was noon in Chicago, it was 12:31 in Pittsburgh, 12:17 in Toledo; 11:50 in St. Louis; 11:39 in St. Paul; and 11:27 in Omaha. The train station in Pittsburgh had six clocks showing six local times. Wisconsin had 38 different time zones, all within the same state. Railroads had nearly 300 time zones across the nation. It was difficult to prevent trains from crashing with so much confusion.

• A Connecticut man named Charles Dowd suggested the solution. Because there are 24 hours in a day, he divided the Earth’s 360 degrees by 24, creating 24 time zones separated by 15 degrees.

Charles Dowd took his time zone plan to a convention of railway superintendents meeting in New York City in 1869. They spent the next 13 years thinking it over.

• Finally, at a convention in 1882, the Standard Time system was adopted by the railroads. This divided the U.S. into four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific which were divided by the 75th, 90th, 105th, and 120th meridians. At noon on Sunday, November 18, 1883 – a day that became known as “the day with two noons” - the railroads set their clocks to this system.

• This was only an agreement among the railroads, but people all over the world recognized the beauty of the system. Leaders from about 25 different nations met in Washington, D.C. on October 13, 1884 at the International Meridian Conference where it was agreed that the longitude line that runs through Greenwich, England, would be the “prime meridian”- zero degrees longitude - and the time would change by one hour for each 15 degrees traveled from that point, known as Greenwich Mean Time.

Still, it took Congress years to get around to making the Standard Time Act a matter of American law, on March 19, 1918 — a move they made in conjunction with passing the first Daylight Saving Time, enacted on March 31. (cont’d next page)

DAYLIGHT SAVING • Ben Franklin was the first person to suggest that setting clocks ahead in the spring and behind in the fall would be a wise idea because it would save expensive candles. The thought wasn’t taken seriously until 1907 when a British man named William Willert was riding through the countryside early one morning and noticed that in spite of the full daylight, all the curtains were drawn in the cottages, indicating their occupants were still sound asleep because the clock said it was too early to get up in the morning.

• Willert wrote a pamphlet suggesting Britain set its clocks ahead in April, and behind in October. A bill introduced in Parliament in 1909 was ridiculed. However, World War I brought a dire need to conserve coal, and the “British Summer Time Act” was passed in 1916, one year after Willert died. It set the clocks ahead one hour in spring and back one hour in fall. The idea worked so well that Britain put its clocks ahead two full hours during the summers of World War II.

• The U.S. followed suit and Daylight Saving Time was enacted for the first time in March of 1918 to conserve fuel for the war effort. It proved to be so unpopular, however, that it was repealed in 1919. It was reinstated during World War II. After the war, some places continued observing it and some didn’t. Those localities that did continue to observe Daylight Saving were not agreed as to which date to set the clocks forward and back again. This caused confusion among the broadcast industries, railroads, bus lines, and airlines. On a single 35-mile stretch of highway between West Virginia and Ohio, a traveler went through seven time changes.

• The transportation industry, led by Greyhound, lobbied hard to remedy the situation, and in 1966 Congress passed the Uniform Time Act. This law did not make Daylight Saving Time mandatory, but merely said that individual states needed to observe it (or not) on a uniform basis and all on the same date.

• Daylight Saving Time is now observed in about 70 countries around the world.

In Arizona, most of the state does not follow DST with the exception of the Navajo Reservation which does, except for the Hopi Partitioned Land which lies inside the Navajo Reservation, which doesn’t. Things are especially confusing in Indiana where some parts of the state follow DST and some parts do not. To further confuse the issue, some parts of Indiana are on Eastern Standard Time and other parts on Central Standard Time. Saskatchewan also opts out of Daylight Saving because, although they are located in

the area for Mountain Standard Time, they observe Central Standard Time, effectively meaning they are on Daylight Saving all year long anyway.

WHY ARE THERE 12 HOURS? • The mathematical system of the Sumerians was based on the number 12 just like ours is based on the number 10. Twelve was considered magical because it is the lowest number with the greatest number of divisors.

Multiples of the number 12 were also considered notable, especially 60 which can be divided by ten other

numbers. The number 360 was also special, since they operated on a 360-day calendar. (That’s why there are 360 degrees in a compass instead of 365.) The Sumerian’s system of weights and measures was based on the number 12, as was their money. And it was the Sumerians who first divided the day into 12 parts, with each segment equal to two of our hours.

• Later the Egyptians divided the day into 24 segments instead of 12. And the Babylonians are responsible for our current system of having 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute.

SANFORD FLEMING • Sanford Fleming was born in Scotland in 1827.

As a teen, he was apprenticed as a surveyor, a skill he mastered quickly. He and his brother immigrated to what is now Ontario when he was 18 years old. By 1849 he was qualified as a surveyor in Canada, and he established what he intended to be a school for surveyors, the Royal Canadian Institute. Instead, it became more of a scientific society and it still thrives today.

• Fleming’s skill as a surveyor propelled him into work with the railroad which was expanding quickly. By 1855 he was Chief Engineer of the Northern Railway of Canada.

He insisted all railroad bridges be made of stone or metal rather than the traditional (and far less expensive) wood. Although it was a controversial move at the time, the decision was justified when the new bridges turned out to be nearly impervious to fire. He subsequently pioneered many other innovative techniques for building railroads.

• In 1862, he approached the government with a plan to build a railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The government approved the plan and put him in charge of the project.

He set off, along with a few friends and his son, to survey the route. A book written by his travel companion George Monro Grant entitled Ocean to Ocean became a best-seller, and prepared the national mindset for the task of building a transcontinental railway.

• Much to his dismay, the government decided they wanted to hire a private contractor to complete the railroad. He was dismissed from his job with a $30,000 pay-out. He was very disappointed. Nevertheless, he was present at the driving of the last spike that completed the railroad. He went on to design the first trans-Pacific cable. The undersea cable from Vancouver to New Zealand and Austra-

• Sanford missed a train in 1876 because the printed train schedule listed p.m. instead of the correct a.m. This infuriated him and he knew something needed to be done to regulate train schedules. At the time, 12:00 p.m. in Kingston was twelve minutes later than 12:00 p.m. in Montréal and thirteen minutes before 12:00 p.m. in Toronto. It was a nightmare for station-masters, who could not deal with train schedules based on local time. The result was chaos for a transcontinental railway.

• At a meeting of the Royal Canadian Institute on February 8, 1879 he advocated for a single world time clock that he called Cosmic Time. He originally thought the new global time system could originate from the center of the planet before deciding that using the meridians to divide the planet into time zones was a better idea. In the U.S., Charles Dowd had proposed this idea to the railroads of America, but Sanford Fleming insisted that not only the railroads but also the entire world should conform to this idea.

• Determined to impose a rational order, Fleming spent years browbeating politicians and negotiating with world leaders. Due to his steady efforts and his influence with the railroad, in 1883 the railways of North America adopted the system of one-hour time zones that remains in force today. Because of its simplicity, railway time soon became the standard for the continent.

• However, the need remained for global uniformity. When he attended the International Meridian Conference in 1884, most of his concepts were adopted. By 1929, nearly all of the countries of the world conformed to his ideas, leading him to be called “The Father of Standard Time.”

• Sanford Fleming was knighted in 1897 on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. He died in Halifax in 1915, having done all he could to ensure trains ran on time.

• Joakim Lehmkuhl was president of the Waterbury Watch Company of Connecticut. He had purchased the small business just before World War II and saw sales soar when they started making timing fuses for the war. When the war ended and sales slumped, Lehmkuhl went looking for new ways to promote watches. After designing an inexpensive and nearly indestructible watch, Lehmkuhl named it Timex and sent his salesmen to jewelry stores to market it for the extraordinarily low price of $6.95.

• Jewelers, who were accustomed to selling watches for $100 and making a $50 profit, snubbed the new watches. When salesmen hurled the watches against walls to demonstrate their indestructibility, jewelers only thought of all the money they would lose by no longer needing to repair them. So Lehmkuhl sent

his salesmen to drugstores and dimestores, where the watches sold well.

• The campaign touting the product’s indestructibility was begun with golfer Ben Hogan shown with a watch strapped to his club and Mickey Mantle pictured with a watch attached to his Louisville Slugger. But the campaign really gathered speed when the company came out with a display that allowed shoppers to use levers to dunk a watch into water, then drop it on an anvil where it would be struck with a hammer. Such a display, which would have been unseemly in posh jewelry stores, was a hit in local drugstores.

• In 1956, John Cameron Swayze started the series of “It keeps a licking and keeps on ticking” torture tests done live on TV. Watches were tossed into paint mixers, attached to surfboards, a racehorse’s leg, and the wrist of a high diver. Professional boxer Rocky Mar-

Watches were frozen in ice cube trays, taped to lobster claws in tanks, tossed over Grand Coulee Dam, attached to an archer’s arrow tip that was shot through a pane of glass, strapped to a tackle line and cast off a deep-sea fishing boat, attached to the pontoon of a plane that landed on water, and swallowed by a farmer’s cow.

In one ad, Swayze stood by as a dolphin tested the watch in a series of jumps at Marine World. Another featured Timex watches strapped to the bellies of Sumo wrestlers. Then there was the one which showed a psychic with mind power that could bend a fork, but couldn’t stop a Timex. Another had an opera singer’s shrill voice shattering every object in the opera hall – except the watch.

• For 20 years, John Cameron Swayze sent watches through torture tests to demonstrate that they

“take a licking and keep on ticking.” However, one commercial was done live on the Steve Allen Show.

Swayze strapped a Timex to an outboard motor in a tank of water on the set.

After the propeller quit spinning, the watch was nowhere to be found.

Swayze slogged through the tank swearing, “It worked perfectly during rehearsals!” while Allen laughed himself hysterical off-stage. Swayze finally reported the watch was “probably still ticking” at the bottom of the tank.

• Viewers sent in 1,000 suggestions a month for new tests. By 1960, 30% of all watches sold were Timex. By 1963, nearly half the watches sold in the U.S. were from Timex. By 1967, it was the world’s best-selling watch brand.

• The slogan “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” remains one of the top rated ad campaigns — ranked No. 40 by Advertising Age on its list of the top 100 campaigns of the 20th century.

Whoopi Goldber A: Last month, Disney's chairman and CEO, Robert A. Iger, announced that Pixar Animation Studios is indeed developing a big-screen sequel to Brad Bird's 2004 superhero adventure "The Incredibles."

Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first film, has said that he would be open to filming a sequel if it "had a truly great story" behind it.

• It was beloved and sometimes maligned British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill who made the following sage observation: "Sometimes it is not enough that we do our best; we must do what is required."

In a preview of coming events, one device developer already is hooked up with advertisers and labs. Insurance companies are encouraging patients to upload their information from other devices. Many of the devices aren't yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

HOLLYWOOD -- Warner Brothers has finally found its Peter Pan. After an exhausting search, unknown child actor Levi Miller has won the role. Last August he was seen in "The Spectacular Now," with "Indulgence" star Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler and Jennifer Jason Leigh, which cost $2.5 million to shoot and earned $7 million. He also appeared in "Orca Park" and in guest shots in the series "Necessary Roughness" and "Terra Nova."

"Brothers and Sisters" producer Greg Berlanti has shifted the release date to July 17, 2015, which means NBC's live production, which as yet has no Peter Pan, will air first on Dec. 4.

Disney's "Frozen" grossed $1 billion at the box office even before its DVD release. Now Disney is planning a live Broadway musical production of "Frozen." Kristen Bell, who voiced the lead in the film, already has offered to star in if Disney wants her. *** Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy are reteaming for "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2." The original was made for $10 million and grossed $137 million in 2012.

And get ready for a reboot of the 1984 hit "Ghostbusters."

"Ghostbusters 3" will have a new cast, though Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd have been asked to appear. Sadly, Harold Ramis, one of the co-writers and co-stars, who played Egon Spengler, passed away in February. *** The Disney Channel will air "Girl Meets World," the spinoff series from "Boy Meets World," with Ben Savage returning as the father, while William Daniels will reprise his role as Savage's teacher, Mr. Feeny.

Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson taped their special April Fools' Day shows in advance. Ferguson hosted "The Price is Right," with his robot sidekick Geoff Peterson (who wears a "Price Is Right" nametag all the time) and Secretariat, while Drew Carey hosted "The Late, Late Show."

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) What Is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure (hypertension) increases the risk of dangerous health problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. Doctors measure blood pressure using two numbers, such as 120/80. The first number shows the surge of pressure in the arteries with every heart beat, and the second number shows the pressure between beats. If either one of these numbers is too high, blood pressure can be dangerous.1 Bringing blood pressure under control is very important, and treatment often involves taking medication. However, changing the way you eat can bring you blood pressure down and may help reduce the need for medication.

What Can I Do to Control My Blood Pressure?

Reduce salt in your diet. Cutting down on salt helps reduce blood pressure. You can do this by: • Using less and less salt in cooking. Your taste will soon adjust.

• Avoiding adding salt to foods at the table.

• Avoiding salty snacks, such as potato chips.

• Avoiding canned foods with added sodium (salt).

• Choose low-sodium (low-salt) varieties of canned soups and vegetables, or fresh or frozen vegetables which are naturally low in sodium.

Exercise Can Cause Asthma Attack DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a 13-year-old boy who's having asthma attacks. At least, that's what they sound like to me. It started early this year when the weather was still cold. He plays or practices baseball three times a week. When he'd run the bases, he'd start coughing and wheezing. Now that the weather is warmer, he still has attacks, but not so bad. Does this sound like asthma to you? I don't know that he's

• Low Sodium—contains 140 mg or less sodium per serving • Very Low Sodium—contains 35 mg or less sodium per serving • Sodium Free—contains less than 5 mg of sodium per serving Choose more vegetarian foods. People who follow vegetarian diets typically have lower blood pressure.2,3,4 No one knows exactly why these foods work so well, but it is probably because cutting out meat, dairy products, and added fats reduces the blood’s viscosity (or “thickness”) which, in turn, brings down blood pressure.5 Plant products are generally lower in fat and sodium and have no cholesterol at all. Vegetables and fruits are also rich in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure.

Try following a vegetarian diet for four to six weeks to find out how well these foods will work for you. Then have your doctor check your blood pressure. Include more of the following foods in your diet which are naturally low in sodium:

• Vegetables—fresh or frozen varieties, such as broccoli, mustard greens, collard greens, kale, spinach, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, and corn • Fruits—fresh or frozen varieties, such as bananas, oranges, apples, pears, grapefruit, strawberries, mango, papaya, guava, strawberries, and blueberries Lower your weight. Avoiding fatty foods, such as animal products and fried foods, and increasing the use of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans helps reduce weight.

In turn, this helps bring down blood pressure. As an added benefit, losing weight reduces your risk of diabetes, heart problems, joint problems, some cancers, and other conditions. If you have a significant weight problem, be sure to consult with your doctor about the best ways for you to lose weight.

Limit alcohol use. Alcohol can raise blood pressure and it helps to limit alcohol to no more than one to two drinks per day (beer and wine count as drinks).

Become more physically active. Exercise can help bring down your blood pressure. A typical healthy exercise schedule would include a brisk walk for a half-hour each day or one hour three times per week. Since exercise puts added strain on your heart, be sure to check with your doctor first about the best way for you to become more physically active.

Avoid tobacco. There are many good reasons to quit smoking, and healthier arteries is one of them.

Let your doctor know you are concerned about your blood pressure and want to use foods to help bring it under control.

High blood pressure is dangerous, so, let your doctor guide you as to when and if your need for medication has changed.

ANSWER: Asthma is an inflammation of the airways, the bronchi. They become very sensitive, and suddenly narrow and fill with mucus when provoked. Both the constriction and the mucus make it difficult to get air into and out of the lungs. Included in the definition of asthma is reversibility. The constriction and mucus buildup are not permanent, in most cases.

The above is for exercise-induced asthma. It's not for other asthma varieties.

The signs of asthma are a feeling of chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. In your son's kind of asthma, exercise-induced asthma, the attack comes on five to 10 minutes after beginning an activity. Exercise-induced asthma is not so dependent on allergy triggers. It comes on because cold, dry air irritates the airways. The warmer, moister air is perhaps the reason why his attacks are not as pronounced as they were.

You need to have a doctor examine the boy to be sure if this is exercise-induced asthma. Even if he has no symptoms at the time of his doctor visit, the doctor can induce them in a number of ways. He or she also can put an end to them.

If exercise-induced asthma is proven, a multitude of medicines are available for control. Most can be taken as mouth sprays. Taking the medicine before physical activity can prevent asthma symptoms for two or three hours. That's long enough to get him through a

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Can I give my dog and cat the same herbal supplements and vitamins that I take? It seems that a lot of medicines prescribed by the vet are just pet-sized doses of human medication. -- Tanya G., via email DEAR TANYA: Some pets can take similar vitamin supplements to humans, but as you noted, the dosages can vary greatly between humans and between different sizes and species. Dogs and cats and other mammals are most likely to be prescribed medicines that humans also take. Lizards, ďŹ sh and non-mammals are far less likely to take the same things.

It's really, really important to talk to your pets' veterinarian about giving them vitamins or herbal supplements, in addition to doing your own research on natural pet health. Many vets recommend certain supplements for dogs and cats, usually added to their food or given in pill form. Some advocate homeopathic remedies. All vets will tell you what not to give your pets, and you should take heed.

Additionally, your pet's food may already contain some vitamin supplements. Be aware of what they're already eating before adding more of the same.

What kind of supplements are commonly given to house pets? Some of the more popular ones include vitamin C, which is purported to reduce inflammation; fish oil, which improves skin and hair; and glucosamine (along with chondroitin), which many owners say has reduced the severity of arthritis in their older dogs.

Again, do your research and make sure the supplement or vitamin you want to give your dog or cat is safe for them. Make sure they're getting the right dose for their weight, as well. With vitamins as with everything else, there is too much of a good thing.

The New York Yankees got their start in an area of north Manhattan affectionately called Hilltop Park. It was a dump. Built in just six weeks, it could seat only 16,000 and left 10,000 people stranded in the wind some 600 feet from home plate in its fence-less outďŹ eld.

The Yankees were then called The Highlanders, and their star was "Wee" Willie Keeler, the nimble outďŹ elder who coined the famous baseball cliche "hit 'em where they ain't." Keeler did that often. He hit .341 for his career, and his name still pops up with semi-regularity.

It took Joe DiMaggio to break his hitting-streak record nearly a half-century later; Ichiro broke his singles hit in a season record (209) nearly a century later.

But if we know anything about the Highlanders and the Yankees in general, it's that there can be only one. The Yankees moved to the House that Ruth Built, became the only game in town, won a bunch of championships, set lots of records, moved to the House that Jeter Built, and immediately drenched the place in nostalgia by virtue of retiring legends Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter.

Mariano Rivera's farewell tour was a heartwarming affair, and he was gifted from park to park and regaled everywhere he went. His number was retired while still an active player. Jeter is still a player too ... in every sense of the word. And since he is pretty cagey with the press and with fans, you can bet his farewell tour will be low on the sap factor. His number will be retired on Derek Jeter Day, and he will have a monument put in Monument Park, and as time goes on, he will pass this vale of tears and serve as one of the ghosts, no doubt.

But if you go into the park (it is open to the public before every game), you won't ďŹ nd any mention of Wee Willie Keeler or any of the Hall of Famers from the Yankees that aren't featured in the monument section. Players like Earle Combs, the ďŹ rst No. 1, leadoff hitter for the famed 1927 Yankees. You won't ďŹ nd No. 5 Tony Lazzeri, either. He also wore No. 6, and perhaps because he shared that number with Yankee great Rick Cerone, the matter is contentious.

But there is one thing for certain, when Jeter's monument is unveiled, the number never to be worn by another Yankee player, many of the tens of thousands on

hand will be thinking of the other No. 2 they saw play Yankee baseball during the 1970s and early 1980s, the de facto leader of the team after Thurman Munson's death, and successor to Mickey Mantle, the great Bobby Murcer.

Murcer didn't have a Hall of Fame career, but for the Yankees he was memorable enough to warrant mention on that day. He lost his battle with brain cancer in 2008, and while we know that there is only space in the park for one No. 2, what's wrong with marking off a little spot for Murcer, too.

In the long term, investing in new, higher-quality windows can save a lot in heating and air conditioning costs, and help make the front room more comfortable year-round.

In the short term, you'll want to take some inexpensive measures to prevent drafts and, in the summer, cool air from escaping.

DRAFTY WINDOWS A COSTLY NUISANCE Q: Our front room windows have never been very good at keeping out drafts on windy nights, and in the summer, it's the hottest room in the house. Do we need to replace these windows? -- Charlene T., via email A: Drafty, leaky windows have a number of causes for -- from warped or old frames to single-pane windows and more -- but completely replacing the windows and frames can be quite costly.

Your electric company may offer an energy audit kit -- or can even send a professional to perform an energy audit -- at low or no cost. A basic kit can determine that hot or cool air is escaping the house, while more detailed audits can determine where that air is escaping.

Another way is to simply bring in a window replacement contractor to inspect the front-room windows, determine what's wrong and present an estimate for the cost of repair or replacement. This is the costliest option, so be certain the problem is severe enough to warrant window and/or frame replacement. Consider getting two or three

If you've performed an energy audit or have been able to figure out just where outside air is blowing through, you can lessen the problem. Air entering under the sash can be blocked by placing a length of foam weatherstripping along the underside, where the sash meets the frame.

Thinner weatherstripping can be installed vertically along the frame to prevent drafts from entering between the window and the frame.

Install double-paneled curtains on all the windows of the room.

In the winter, these provide an extra buffer between drafts and you. In the summer, these solid curtains can be pulled shut when the sun is shining into the room, to help keep the room cool.

These short-term measures can save some energy, but to really make that room comfortable, take a serious look at replacing the windows, particularly if they're old or the frame or sash are visibly warped.

HOME TIP: Take a tour of your home and make note of as many improvement or maintenance tasks that you can find.
